Organizational Structure, Culture, Management And The...
1. Introduction
The aim of the report is to observe and analyse how organisational structure, culture, management
and the leadership are helping to function effectively and achieve the organisational goals. I will try
to apply as many different theories as possible to support the report.
2. Background of Burberry
Burberry is a British luxury fashion brand that was founded in 1896 by Thomas Burberry, after
which the company was named and has lived ever since to date. It is easily recognised as a British
iconic brand, known for its iconic trench coats for men and women. The organization is listed in the
London Stock Exchange and in 2015, the company recorded £2515 m and profit before tax of £421
m. It is driven four main objectives that ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The latter can be and, quite often, are not realistic (Mullins, 2010).
4. Organisational Culture
Organisational culture refers to the organisation 's values, beliefs and customs. It is relatively simple
to illustrate and explain the organisation 's structure, but there is a bit more to explain the
organisational culture. Organizational culture is an aspect of organizational life. We say that there is
a strong culture when members of the organisation act because their values tend to meet the values
of the organisation. On the contrary, there is a weak culture – when these values tend to differ from
the values of the organisation. Then the control can be achieved through many bureaucratic
procedures. Where culture is strong – people work because they believe that what they are doing is
what they should do. But in this case there is a risk of another phenomenon: excessive group
thinking. It 's a condition where people think so much that they can't resist group thinking, and thus
reduce their innovative thoughts. This can happen, for example, where there is a great deal of trust
in the central charismatic leader of the organisation, or where there is excessive belief in the values
of the organisation. For comparison, bureaucratic organisations may not be able to think
innovatively due to excessive dependence on established procedures. Innovative organisations need
people who are ready to think critically about the current situation – whether it is a type of group
thinking

In the 2006 the current CEO Angela Ahrendts joins the company replacing Rose Maria Bravo, who
managed to greatly expand the Burberry market share in the US.[6] Ahrendts modernizes every
aspect of the company's behaviour and positioning itself on the market having chosen an innovative
five year strategic business plan. 2.2. Business strategy, vision and mission According to the new
plan the company concentrates its investment efforts on opening its own stores rather than on the
wholesale, especially in London. The new CEO recognizes Burberry's presence in its genuine way
and major PR activity in this city precisely, as another way to emphasize the British heritage of the
brand. However, Ahrendts points out there are 25 such "Londons ", where Burberry will strive for
recognition and loyalty, which include such metropolises as Paris, New York, Hong Kong, Dubai,
etc.[12] As due to the fact that the company produces luxury goods Ahrendts prefers to play more or
less safe and concentrate on those parts of the world which are likely to be protected from the wider
economic problems. As another crucial factor for the growth and development that Ahrendts
chooses, predicting the future customer be younger, is the company to not maintain their traditional
product line and merchandising way only, but to enhance it with the new design and presentation to

Case Study Of Burberry
1. Introduction
With over 159 years of history and tradition, Burberry can be considered as an old brand. However,
in the 21st century the company has become a pioneer luxury brand in the digital world.
Communicating with a younger audience and developing new and improved advertising campaigns,
Burberry's perception changed in the last nine years. It went from a boring beige trench coat to one
of the leading voices of fashion and trends.
The study below shows the transition of Burberry as a brand, that was known for the wrong reasons,
and which is recognize today as one of the most important brands in the luxury business. The report
talks about the beginning of the brand's repositioning in 2006, with the arrival of the new CEO

In the case of Burberry how those aspects apply.
Physique: is the most tangible aspect of the brand, in Burberry's case it would be the brand's check
pattern that is known around the world, the sophisticated and classic logo of the knight riding the
horse and the quality of their product. These elements can be seen in all their channels of
communication, in the stores, in their website, in their campaigns, it is the raw core of the brand.
Personality: that can be suggested as the characteristics of the brand. It's how the brand
communicates with their consumers and how they see the brand. Burberry is perceived by their
customers as a sophisticated, a brand which doesn't adventure itself in fashion like some others (like
Moschino, Gucci or Dolce and Gabbana), however, it's a simple but classical fashion that it can be
used for many years.
Culture: this pillar consist on the values and basic principles that the brand must base its behavior,
when it comes to Burberry we are talking about the British values that are carved into the consumers
minds. When we look Burberry's history on the brand's website we can see that they were a big part
of England's history, having their trench coat's been used by officials during World War I in

Burberry : A Brand Company
Burberry was founded in 1856 by a dressmaker named Thomas Burberry, over the decades it has
developed in to the globally recognised, quintessentially British, luxury brand that we see today.
Burberry has built itself a reputation for ''craftsmanship, innovation and design'' (Burberry, 2014:
online), appealing across generations and genders offering men and women's clothing, accessories
and beauty. Burberry has icons that are recognised globally, including the trench, the trademark
check and its brand logo, the Equestrian Knight. The brand has a large group of followers devoted to
the brand, mainly down to the appeal of its British heritage and the iconic trench coat. In 2001
Christopher Baily became the creative director for Burberry, and is credited for the huge success of
the brand. Christopher is responsible for all designs within Burberry, including the three brands
Burberry operates; Burberry Prorsum, Burberry London and Thomas Burberry. As a globally
recognised luxury brand, Burberry's '' craftsmanship, innovation and design – remains central to the
business.''(Burberry website– 2014)They have recently made developments within social media and
digital marketing, surrounding the brand with awareness and excitement. The rich history and
heritage together with its innovative designs and movements in promotion means the brand is sure
to continue to appeal to its extensive luxury customer base. Burberrys target market is for both

House of Fraser
House of Fraser founded Baugur Group in 1849. The private department store offers home décor,
apparel for all ages, accessories and electronics. The brand operates about 60 stores in the United
Kingdom. House of Fraser is the second threat for Burberry due to its wide target in the UK. The
company offers to the customer quality brand merchandise and prizes. The House of Fraser
customer is similar to the Burberry because both are fashion conscious and look for comfort.
Escada
Escada is a German public company founded in the early 1976. The brand designs women's apparel,
accessories, leather goods and footwear. The brand operates about 515 owned and franchise stores
worldwide. Escada is a main competitor for Burberry because of the merchandise concept. The
brand targets upscale female customer who is in search for quality and individuality in the fashion
society. The merchandise is an image of tailored silhouettes and intricate fabrics. Ralph Lauren,
House of Fraser and Escada are main competitors of Burberry because of their approach to the
customer and merchandise. All four companies suffer from similar threats such as weather. This is

Comparing Hobbe's and Locke's Theories on Nature
Two books that I am going to be drawing information from for my paper are Hobbes' "Leviathan"
and Locke's "Two Treatises of Government." This essay will be focusing on the differences between
Hobbes' and Locke's ideas on the state of nature. One of the biggest, and in my opinion most
important points that makes Hobbes different from Locke is his belief that the state of nature is
equal to the state of war. Thomas Hobbes was an English philosopher, who lived between 1588 and
1679. He witnessed multiple events throughout his life that later led him to write his book
"Leviathan," in 1651 once the war had ended. Hobbes witnessed the English Civil War (1642–
1651), the interregnum period of England starting in 1649, and the hardest of them ... Show more

(Hobbes PAGE NUMBER)"
After that Hobbes goes on to say, "The life of man is solitary, poore, nasty, brutish, and short."
(Hobbes) He argues that nothing is unjust in the state of nature. He believes that everyone has the
right to do anything he/she wants because in the state of nature, there is no right or wrong and there
is no law; everyone can do everything and nothing can be unjust. He says that " Where there is no
common power, no law; where no law, no injustice." (Hobbes)
So all in all with Hobbes, he believes that all people are equal, therefore no power over the others in
the state can be established. Everyone is the enemy to everyone else, therefore, no on can secure
himself/herself, there is no property, and nothing is unjust. So overall, Hobbes state of nature is very
pessimistic and is not a place to survive.
Locke's idea of the state of nature is that everyone is equal to everyone. He states that, "the state of
nature is also the state of equality, wherein all the power and jurisdiction is reciprocal, no one
having more than another.." (Locke) Locke however, does not think that this leads the people to war.
He thinks that the state of nature is NOT equal to the state of war, but there is a chance of it
becoming the state of war. He says that the person who committed the crime against a certain person
puts himself in the state of war with that

John Rolfe 's Impact On America
Period 2: John Rolfe: John Rolfe influenced America in many ways both economically and socially.
Rolfe was known as the person who first successfully cultivated tobacco as a export crop and the
first to marry a native American, Pocahontas. He was born on May 6, 1585 by his parents john Rolfe
and Dorothy mason. During the time of this birth, Tobacco had grown more and more popular. John
saw it as a great way to make business. In 1608 john aboard a ship that was set to sail to Virginia,
but the ship was crashed and had led them to be stranded from months. Later he and the other people
who were stranded build a new ship and continued their voyage to the new colonies (Virginia).
Rolfe was able to get planted tobacco seeds from the West indies that were a little different from the
native ones but easy to grow in the colonies. The seeds that he had were a little bit sweeter and not
as harsh which grabbed the interest of the Virginia company even though Spain had declared a death
penalty to anyone who was selling it to non–spains. Once he had produced enough tobacco from his
first shipment to England the price of tobacco shot sky high. John Rolfe paved the road for the
development and settlement of the New world. His success also led to be a encouragement for
others who wanted to start new business in the New World. When John Rolfe moved to Virginia he
met the daughter of Powhatan who was kidnapped by Jamestown settlers, but it never happened.
Pocahontas later learned how to

The Expulsion of Freedom
According to Jean Jacques Rousseau, human beings are bestowed with the blessings of freedom
during their individual genesis on this fruitful planet, but this natural freedom is immensely
circumscribed as it's exchanged for the civil liberties of the State. He indicated that the supplanting
of natural freedom is necessary for the obtainment of greater power for the greater collective
community, but the prospect of obtaining superlative capabilities comes with the price of
constraints. Yet this notion of natural freedom conflicts with Thomas Hobbes rendition on the state
of nature because he illustrates that nature, interface through savagery. According to Hobbes,
mankind has endorsed and embraced natures temperament, because this system of ... Show more

The illusion of a free society with unbiased laws created by the collective and ratified by the
legislator, enables the society to have a sense of morality and perform a ceremonial civic duty to
uphold the laws they finance with commitment. Rousseau states in the opening page that, "Man is
born free, but everywhere he is in chains. One thinks himself the master of others, and still remains
a greater slave than they." These chains that Rousseau refer to are the constraints that are
strategically placed on the freedom of the residents of the state. Since laws consult the public
interest of the people collectively and suppress the private interest of the individual, they are
essentially chains on the minds and souls of mankind, because people are used as vessels by the
state to fulfill its agenda, under the guise and illusion of individual power to implement change in
the collective.
The author of Leviathan, Thomas Hobbes eloquently emphasizes that the state of nature is, in its
rawest essence, chaotic and savage. In Chapter thirteen of his work Leviathan, he depreciates man's
role in the state of nature by saying, "the life of man, solitary, poore , nasty, brutish and short"(pg.
186). From his perspective, due to the fact that humans dwell in this catatonic state of destitution,
humans naturally yearn for peace. Hobbes suggest that through the formulation of "Leviathan"
through a social contract, achieving peace is a more

Leadership Overview : Angela Ahrendts
Leadership Overview
Angela Ahrendts is one of the most successful women in business of our generation. This is due
largely in part to her exceptionally strong leadership skills. Ahrendts' resume of accomplishments
can stack up with the best in the world and includes honors and awards such as, The Most Excellent
Order of the British Empire for her services to British business in 2013, The Prime Minister's
Business Advisory Group from 2010–present, Oracle World Retail Awards: Outstanding Leadership
2010, ranked #4 on Fortune's 2013 top people in business, and ranked inside Forbes' top 100 Most
Powerful Women in business for the past nine consecutive years (Alexander, 2013). Every company
that Angela has held a leadership role in has experienced great success. However, despite her many
successes and achievements Ahrendts is describe as motivating and humble by her counterparts.
This speaks volumes of not only her vast amount of business knowledge, but also to her ability to
lead people in an effective, relationship–building manner. After much research on Ahrendts and her
work at each company we conclude that she is predominantly a Theory Y leader and supports that
with four key styles and traits. Among those are a balance of task–oriented leadership and
relationship–oriented leadership, in addition to strong administrative skills and interpersonal skill.
Ahrendts uses a combination of all of these styles and skills to effectively lead her subordinates and

Rousseau’s Second Discourse
The last paragraph of the prelude to the Second Discourse is an impassioned appeal whose scope
transcends the boundaries of time and space alike, calling for readers to pay attention to the history
of man and society that Rousseau is on the verge of putting forth. Beginning with this authorial
intrusion–a form of literary apostrophe–the essay adopts historical writing as its primary narrative
mode. This method stands in direct contrast with the approach Thomas Hobbes takes in his
Leviathan, in which the Englishman sets out to prove propositions as one might do geometrically, by
preceding from valid arguments and sound premises. Rousseau's rejection of philosophy, at least as
he understands it in the Second Discourse, embodies the emphasis ... Show more content on

Most importantly for Rousseau, however, is not necessarily how history lets him see how men might
have been or how history lets him strike a balance between grasping the intricacy of human history
and succeeding fluidly from one thought to another; it is how framing his work in such a way lets
him give the greatest demonstrative proof of the point he makes. The first part of the work consists
in a history of mankind until the institution of the social contract, and it reads easily and freely, just
as man in Rousseau's conception was in those days. The second part of the Second Discourse, which
deals with the critique of the social contract itself, however, reads much more heavily, as if
Rousseau were attempting to give the reader a taste of the gravity the social contract itself imposes
upon man. The opening lines of the second half already launch his scathing attack on civil society
by associating this notion with a man who takes advantage of his fellow men:
The first person who, having enclosed a plot of land, took it into his head to say this is mine and
found people simple enough to believe him, was the true founder of civil society. What crimes,
wars, murders, what miseries and horrors would the human race have been spared, had someone
pulled up the stakes or filled in the ditch and cried out to his fellow men: "Do not listen to this

The other two diffusion brands are Burberry blue and black that is for the Japan fashion market.
They are also targeted for younger male and female professionals. The multi–brand model of the
company has provided maximum market exposure and extensive consumer demand. The second
benefit of the model is that, it has provided elasticity and market awareness evidenced by the brands
that target specific countries. Additionally, the approach of having broad category of products range
and differential pricing options have provided a marketing move for the company since the
customers have accessed it on that account as well as enable the trading up and down of the brand
levels ("Group Overview," n.d.)..
The brand is known for its trench coats that target the young audience. The product has been
marketed through websites such as artofthetrench.com and celebrity endorsement (Grieve, Idiculla,

The Supreme Court Of Virginia
In any legal system, there is a notion that the chief end to be achieved is justice. Clearly no one
would advocate for an unjust legal system, but what if the clear distinction between just and unjust
is not so clear? What if there are diametrically opposed moral principles supporting competing
arguments? On three occasions, the Supreme Court of Virginia has declined ruling on whether the
relationship with an assailant 's wife deprives a defendant of the right to self–defense. The Supreme
Court of Virginia should deny a defendant the right to claim self–defense when the following
elements are present: (1) the defendant is charged with murder, (2) the defendant was in the act of

It is in the public's interest to maintain a predictable standard of acceptable behavior. Without such a
standard, society will fall into chaos. There are two traditional, primary means for integrating moral
reasoning into the analysis of criminal law. The first is requiring a defendant to have a culpable
mental state for most crimes. The second is the doctrine of affirmative defenses. There are two types
of Affirmative defenses: justifications and excuses. In effect, if a defendant can establish a defense,
the defendant should be acquitted because society believes he took the right or at least a tolerable
action. Excuses, invoke the notion that while what the defendant did was not justified, the defendant
"should not be held accountable for his wrongdoing because he is not to blame for it." Despite the
fact that the criminal law is essentially a moral enterprise, the legally–trained actors in the criminal
justice system rarely explicitly examine exactly what moral principles the system is enforcing. One
reason for the absence of moral analysis is that most lawyers are not trained in moral philosophy.
Generally, legal education has never seriously attempted to incorporate moral principles into
instruction." Another explanation for the absence in moral reasoning in the criminal law is that there
is no need for any deep moral debate concerning the right or wrong of

Many consumers love the company's products such as coats, clothing, and bags but they can't afford

actually pay out their cash. The pricing of goods or services can represent their quality and
desirability. However, high price range has made it reachable within the pocket of few customers

who desire to have a different lifestyle but can't afford for high priced products. Most of them can't

Burberry may be best known for its extraordinary plaid, but its use of real fur is making the design
house synonymous with cruelty to animals. Taupe plaid might be unattractive, but simply kill an
animal just to wear its fur is horrible. Animals on fur farms spend their entire lives in wire cages,
where they are exposed to all weather conditions. They often go without competent shelter, hygienic
water, and any veterinary care. Fur farmers use the cheapest and easiest killing methods available,
and most of the animals are killed by insert an electric rod into their body and send high volt electric

"Hey, you can come up. The key is under the rug," his mom said. He walked through the

a writer. "As a writer, Frederick Douglass shined. As a speaker, he was the best. There was no
abolitionist, black or white, that was more for his speaking skills." (McFeely, 206) "So impressive
were Frederick Douglass's oratorical and intellectual abilities that opponents refused to believe that
he had been a slave and alleged that he was a impostor brought up on the public by the abolitionists.
In reply, Douglass wrote Narrative Of The Life Of Frederick Douglass, An American Slave (1845),
which he revised in later years: in final form, it appeared in 1882 under the title Life and Times Of
Frederick Douglass." (Graves, 52 ) Frederick's oratory skills left the largest impact on Civil War
time period literature. Douglass's most significant autobiographical works include: Narrative Of The
Life Of Frederick Douglass, An American Slave: My Bondage And My Freedom: and Life And
Times Of Frederick Douglass. These three books are about the same person, and share a similar
message, but are written by Frederick at different times of his life, looking at the past in different
ways. In Narrative Of The Life Of Frederick Douglass, Douglass used a simple, yet educated way to
show how he felt as a slave growing up in Maryland. He describes in the Narrative "I have often
been so pinched with hunger as to dispute with old "Nep," the dog, for

Brand personality
Aaker (1997) defined brand personality is the set of human characteristics associated with a brand.
Aaker's framework as figure 1 shows, and it represented "Big Five" personality model, which are
the original work (Norman 1963; Tupes and Christal 1958), NEO Model (McCrae and Costa 1989),
Big Five Prototypes (John 1990), ACL (Piedmont, McCrae, and Costa, 1991), and Inter–Circumples
Model (McCrae and Coata 1989). The framework was divided five brand dimensions: sincerity
(Down–to earth, honest, wholesome, cheerful), excitement (daring, spirited, imaginative, up–to–
date), competence (reliable, intelligent, successful), sophistication (upper class, charming), and
ruggedness (outdoorsy, tough).

Brands do indeed possess personalities (Arora and Stoner, 2009). Brand personality in some aspect

Essay On Burberry
April 14, 2016, Burberry reported weaker than expected sales and predicted earnings this year at the
low end of estimates, sending its stock down the most in six months and capping a dismal week for
the luxury–goods industry (Bloomberg, A. Roberts, 2016). The truth is that this is not the first time
that the fashion megahouse has reported poor performance. Burberry shocked the markets back in
2012, with a warning that sales had stalled in the clearest sign that slowing demand from China had
started having an impact on the luxury sector. Burberry Group Plc is a British luxury fashion house,

In reality though, there was a lot more going on in this situation. Burberry was already aware of the
risks of their increasing reliance on their Asia Pacific market, already seeing the first red flags from
2012. The group did not respond fast enough to the changes in the socioeconomic landscape. In
regards to the brand's decision to assign Mr. Bailey as both the CEO and Creative Officer of the
house, the decision remains to be seen. To sum up, there is no easy answer on what should Burberry
do next. The internal factors reflect a need for a substantial change in the company's managerial
cognition and decision making as well as rearrangements in the company's core in order to stengthen
its desirability and relevance to the consumer. Burberry needs to build its culture through a new
strategy to reflects their values in everything they do. The external factors showcase Burberry's
weakness in reacting quickly to market changes and how necessary it is for the company to invest in
underpenetrated markets to unlock the market opportunity. That way, Burberry can evolve and

Hobbes, Marx, and Shah
The cold, calculating, and logical brains of Enlightenment thinkers are much different from the
emotional, fantasy–loving mind of Romantics. The Enlightenment was an 18th century movement in
which rationality and science were placed as the number one things a human could have (Brians).
The Enlightenment also propagated the idea equality and liberalism (Brians). Romanticism was an
international movement which occurred after the Enlightenment during the late 1700s to the mid–
1800s (Melani). It placed emotions at the forefront of human thought (Melani). Thomas Hobbes, a
very early Enlightenment thinker, has a variety of ideas which do not coincide with those of Karl
Marx, an early Romantic.

Therefore, when Hobbes speaks of a state of nature, he is speaking of a state without a governing
body. In the natural state, "Every man was continually engaged in a war against all other men
("bellum universale")" ("The Philosophy of Thomas Hobbes") in an effort to gain power ("Thomas
Hobbes"). In Hobbes's natural state, all men are equal insofar that each man is able to kill every
other man, be it through sheer force, cunning, or by joining his power with others against a stronger
foe (Williams). This "equality" leads Hobbes to claim that "there is no natural source of authority to
order [men's] lives together," (Williams). Also in Hobbes's bellum universale, "'nothing can be
unjust. The notions of right and wrong, justice and injustice have no place [in the state of nature],'"
(Williams). The combination of Hobbesian equality and lack of a universal moral system allow there
for no agreed authority to decide if anyone's actions are allowable or not. Unless "people share the
same moral ideas...at the level of individual judgment," (Williams), no conclusion may be arrived at.
However, identical moral ideas for each and every judgment on each and every person are possible
when political authority exists.
In a Hobbesian society, all men (except the chosen ruler or ruling body), agree to give up or limit
their rights (especially the singular right of nature) in order to create a "social contract" which

Did Thomas Jefferson Abandon His Ethics for the Lousiana...
Did Thomas Jefferson give up his deeply held political values in order to purchase the Louisiana
Territory from the French (P. 2)? This is the major question that has led to much debate within the
early history of America (P. 1). Some historians argue that Thomas Jefferson did, in fact, throw away
his commitment to states' rights and constructionism by the large purchase of Louisiana for the U.S.
(P.1). On the other hand, some believe that President Jefferson supported his political beliefs, the
fortification of the republican government, with the Louisiana Purchase (P. 1).

13). In "When the Ends Justify the Means," Barry J. Balleck debates that President Jefferson did not
abandon his political ethics by purchasing the Louisiana Territory (P. 14). Balleck states that the
Louisiana Purchase was "the greatest achievement of Thomas Jefferson's presidency" (P. 14). With
the addition of the new territory to the United States, President Jefferson secured the nation "for
generations, if not centuries to come" (P. 14). Jefferson was confident that purchasing the Louisiana
Territory would encourage the development of an upright Republican populace (P. 14). Surprisingly,
he had many reservations about his authority to purchase Louisiana, but that did not stop him from
laying the treaty before Congress (P. 19). He also knew that, by purchasing Louisiana, the
Federalists power might be lost, but he still pushed forward with the treaty (P. 19). Although many
historians criticize President Jefferson for giving up his most visible political convictions by
purchasing Louisiana, he knew that it would double the size of the United States and ensure much
land expansion for the country (P. 20). He strongly believed that the new territory was "essential to
national security" (P. 21). In President Jefferson's mind, purchasing Louisiana secured the "virtues of
Republicanism in an 'Empire of Liberty'" (P. 22). "The Louisiana

significant value when it is well recognized and has positive associations in the mind of the

thing she did was bring in a new management team. She hired the best of the best. She hired people

The Louisiana Territory And How It Changed America Forever
The American landscape has always been that of great majestic glory. But this was not always so.
The westward expansion was not always in the cards for the Americans. The French had mostly
settled from the Mississippi River in the east to the Rocky Mountains in the west and from the Gulf
of Mexico in the south to the Canadian border in the north. With the Louisiana Purchase the U.S
acquired most of that land. How did this land help define the United States of America as a Nation?
This essay will discuss the actions leading up to the Acquirement of the Louisiana territory and how
it changed America forever.
In 1762 France ceded French Louisiana west of the Mississippi River to Spain. The French also
transferred almost all of its remaining North American holdings to Britain in 1763. Spain was no
longer a dominant country and they did little to develop Louisiana during the next three decades in
which they held it. Spain in 1796 allied itself with France causing Britain in a bold move to use its
navy to cut off the Spanish from reaching America.
The Spanish in 1801 signed in secret, a treaty with France to return Louisiana Territory to France.
This set off a series of concerns for the Americans. Americans had been moving westward into the
Ohio River and Tennessee River valley areas since the 1780's and the Port of New Orleans was a
strategic port of entry as well as the Mississippi River which was needed if the U.S was going to be
able to ship good through the Gulf of Mexico.

The Influence of Locke and Hobbes on Government
Thomas Hobbes and John Locke have authored two works that have had a significant impact on
political philosophy. In the "Leviathan" by Hobbes and "Two Treatises of Government" by Locke,
the primary focus was to analyze human nature to determine the most suitable type of government
for humankind. They will have confounding results. Hobbes concluded that an unlimited sovereign
is the only option, and would offer the most for the people, while for Locke such an idea was
without merit. He believed that the government should be limited, ruling under the law, with divided
powers, and with continued support from its citizens. With this paper I will argue that Locke had a
more realistic approach to identifying the human characteristics that ... Show more content on

This absolute Sovereign will gain power when the citizens have given up the entirety of their rights
to this new authority and agreeing to a covenant. This is considered a rational action, and is the only
option for the body of people to smoothly come together. When that happens, an organized society
forms, in which the consequences of not adhering to the rules and regulations of the covenant will
be so severe, that no one would attempt to violate this contract and disobey the Sovereign. That can
happen since first, the Sovereign has deadly force and is permitted to use it whenever he or she
likes, and, second, the citizens have parted away with all their rights, and cannot protect themselves
from this Sovereign. That fact creates a fearful, and therefore, obedient society. This limitless
Sovereign is justified, based on information from the "Leviathan." As we can infer from Hobbes'
views on human nature, people will always act selfishly and in an evil manner to obtain the things
that they want. As a result, for people to contract into a peaceful society that will have what they
want and need readily available, they must be bound by force. If this distrustful group of people had
an inclination that the governing authority was weak, they would overturn it, fatefully returning
them to the state of nature. Additionally, this absolute monarchy is considered warranted, according

Chapter 1:
Chapter 1 focused on introducing two politicians that were about to have a duel on July 11, 1804.
Aaron Burr was the third vice president of the United States and the vice president during Thomas
Jefferson's term. Alexander Hamilton was a founding father of the United States and apart of the
federalist party. Both Hamilton and Burr were each other 's political rival and would insult one
another until they arranged a duel to end their dispute. The duel ended with Hamilton shooting Burr
in the right side causing him to die the next day. Newspapers exaggerated the situation by making it
seem like Hamilton murdered Burr out of cold blood and dwindling his reputation as a politician.
What interested me in this chapter was that in the past they used dueling as a way to handle disputes
between one another. However, I don't think that dueling was the smartest method of settling a coral
between people because it is a selfish act that is similar to suicide and risk ruining your life.
Chapter 2:
Chapter 2 consisted of Hamilton considering to resign from being the secretary of treasury if his

questioned the aspects of the absolutist regime of monarchs such as King Louis 14 of France, and
strongly challenged the religious beliefs. In years prior to the Enlightenment, the people sought out
answers from positions of authority, such as the church or monarchy. The Enlightenment
emphasized an alternative, the use of reason to seek answers. With the emphasis on reason came
many social and political philosophies that challenged the preconceived notion of divine right of the
monarchy. Many enlightened thinkers, or philosophes, wrote about the natural rights of people and
the role of government in society.[ ] From the Renaissance Era through the Scientific Revolution,

Tesco Group Inc And Hermes Company And Their Ratios Essay
1. Introduction: In this coursework I am going to compare the two companies Burberry Group Inc
and Hermes company and their ratios. Both companies are two well known companies. This study
will financially compare these two companies by using ratio analysis. The reason for why I chose
two contrasting companies is because it would be interesting to see how each company 's ratios
helps them to be so successful. Obviously the aims and objectives will vary from one another but
their also may be some similarities, even though the companies are two separate stores. 2. History of
the companies: Let's begin to talk about the history of The Burberry company first: Burberry Group
Inc is a British luxury fashion house, headquartered in London, England. Its main fashion house
focuses on and distributes ready–to–wear outerwear, fashion accessories, fragrances, sunglasses, and
cosmetics. Established in 1856 by Thomas Burberry, originally focusing on the development of
outdoors attire, the fashion house as moved on to the high fashion market developing pattern–based
scarves, trench coats, and other fashion accessories. The first shop opened up in the Haymarket,
London, in 1891. Burberry was an independent family controlled company until 1955, when it was
reincorporated. The fashion house has dressed notable actors, world leaders, musicians, and athletes
such as Humphrey Bogart, Audrey Hepburn, Peter Sellers, and Ronald Reagan. Its distinctive check
pattern has become one of its

Burberry Brand Life Cycle : Burberry Essay
Burberry Brand life cycle Introduction (1956~1900s) The history of Burberry started in 1856 by
dress maker Thomas Burberry. His store had developed a reputation for selling a quality range of
outerwear By 1870 and the success of Burberry was accelerated with the invention of innovative
fabric 'gabardine' in 1880 Growth (1910s~1950s) During the WWⅠ(1914~18) Burberry was
commissioned by the war office to design a new uniform for the British officers and it is the origin
of Burberry's iconic trench coat and the trademark Burberry Check pattern. In 1960s, Burberry
trench coat was worn by top celebrities in popular movies and Burberry's fame became further
higher accordingly. Maturity (1960s~ mid1990s) From 1967 Check used for umbrellas, scarves,
luggage (Barton and Pratley, 2014). At mid–1980s, exports constituted two third of company's sales
mainly to American and Asian consumers those who desired 'Britishness'. Burberry started licensing
without controlling quality and the market was flooded with Burberry check. Therefore, the luxury
heritage of the company had been severely affected Decline (mid 1990s~mid 2000s) Due to the
indiscreet licensing, the market is flooded with dowdy Burberrys covered with check. Also the
credibility of Burberry were damaged by 'Chav' generation symbolizing themselves with Burberry
check. When Rose Marie Bravo joined Burberry as a CEO in 1997, major department stores Harvey
Nichols and Selfridges did not even stock Burberry ranges, and Harrods

An Evaluation Of The Production And Consumption Of A...
This is a critical evaluation of the production and consumption of a Burberry trench coat, which will
also include a brief history of the trench. The text will cover an evaluation of shape, colour, form
and material. It will also cover the processes and materials involved in the production. This will
include wider meanings of the trench and its social functions, such as why is the trench coat so
popular, and how does it stay that way. And most importantly, it will cover the key problems of
which, Burberry might loose their success in the future.
The trench coat includes a fairly long history. Schneider Sven, (2006) As mentioned by Sven, at
present, the trench coat is universally classified as a raincoat. He includes in his article, it has ...

The coat also became very sticky in the heat and too solid in the cold. Schneider Sven (2006). This
is also a very uncomfortable feature, which a wearer shouldn't experience. Because of it's unlikable
features, the coat had became ostracized by the late 1830s. Schneider Sven (2006) As we know now,
the invention was a great find, but it didn't stay popular because of it's numerous negatives. This
brings us to the next craftsmen that competed to make a raincoat work.
There were two more craftsmen who were competing to produce the best raincoat at the time.
Unlike Macintosh with a rubberized version, John Emary developed an exceptional raincoat, that he
called Aquascutum. Aquascutum was named after a latin term aqua, which translates as water and
scutum. Schneider Sven (2006) Aquascutum was very successful and started producing coats for
British soldiers, but not long after, Thomas Burberry became a high competitor. Baren Mourice
(1996) He followed a completely different approach. Instead of using wool for the fabric, he decided
to use something tougher. The fabric he used was woven of a long staple Egyptian cotton yarn that
was waterproofed before and after the weaving. It was called Gabardine. The advantages of the coat
were quite observed. It was scentless, lightweight, water–resistant and hard wearing. The material
was

  • 1. Organizational Structure, Culture, Management And The... 1. Introduction The aim of the report is to observe and analyse how organisational structure, culture, management and the leadership are helping to function effectively and achieve the organisational goals. I will try to apply as many different theories as possible to support the report. 2. Background of Burberry Burberry is a British luxury fashion brand that was founded in 1896 by Thomas Burberry, after which the company was named and has lived ever since to date. It is easily recognised as a British iconic brand, known for its iconic trench coats for men and women. The organization is listed in the London Stock Exchange and in 2015, the company recorded £2515 m and profit before tax of £421 m. It is driven four main objectives that ... Organisational Culture Organisational culture refers to the organisation 's values, beliefs and customs. It is relatively simple to illustrate and explain the organisation 's structure, but there is a bit more to explain the organisational culture. Organizational culture is an aspect of organizational life. We say that there is a strong culture when members of the organisation act because their values tend to meet the values of the organisation. On the contrary, there is a weak culture – when these values tend to differ from the values of the organisation. Then the control can be achieved through many bureaucratic procedures. Where culture is strong – people work because they believe that what they are doing is what they should do. But in this case there is a risk of another phenomenon: excessive group thinking. It 's a condition where people think so much that they can't resist group thinking, and thus reduce their innovative thoughts. This can happen, for example, where there is a great deal of trust in the central charismatic leader of the organisation, or where there is excessive belief in the values of the organisation. For comparison, bureaucratic organisations may not be able to think innovatively due to excessive dependence on established procedures. Innovative organisations need people who are ready to think critically about the current situation – whether it is a type of group thinking ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

However, Ahrendts points out there are 25 such "Londons ", where Burberry will strive for recognition and loyalty, which include such metropolises as Paris, New York, Hong Kong, Dubai, etc.[12] As due to the fact that the company produces luxury goods Ahrendts prefers to play more or less safe and concentrate on those parts of the world which are likely to be protected from the wider economic problems. • 11. Comparing Hobbe's and Locke's Theories on Nature Two books that I am going to be drawing information from for my paper are Hobbes' "Leviathan" and Locke's "Two Treatises of Government." This essay will be focusing on the differences between Hobbes' and Locke's ideas on the state of nature. One of the biggest, and in my opinion most important points that makes Hobbes different from Locke is his belief that the state of nature is equal to the state of war. Thomas Hobbes was an English philosopher, who lived between 1588 and 1679. He witnessed multiple events throughout his life that later led him to write his book "Leviathan," in 1651 once the war had ended. Hobbes witnessed the English Civil War (1642– 1651), the interregnum period of England starting in 1649, and the hardest of them ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... (Hobbes PAGE NUMBER)" After that Hobbes goes on to say, "The life of man is solitary, poore, nasty, brutish, and short." (Hobbes) He argues that nothing is unjust in the state of nature. He believes that everyone has the right to do anything he/she wants because in the state of nature, there is no right or wrong and there is no law; everyone can do everything and nothing can be unjust. He says that " Where there is no common power, no law; where no law, no injustice." (Hobbes) So all in all with Hobbes, he believes that all people are equal, therefore no power over the others in the state can be established. Everyone is the enemy to everyone else, therefore, no on can secure himself/herself, there is no property, and nothing is unjust. So overall, Hobbes state of nature is very pessimistic and is not a place to survive. Locke's idea of the state of nature is that everyone is equal to everyone. He states that, "the state of nature is also the state of equality, wherein all the power and jurisdiction is reciprocal, no one having more than another.." (Locke) Locke however, does not think that this leads the people to war. He thinks that the state of nature is NOT equal to the state of war, but there is a chance of it becoming the state of war. He says that the person who committed the crime against a certain person puts himself in the state of war with that ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The Expulsion of Freedom According to Jean Jacques Rousseau, human beings are bestowed with the blessings of freedom during their individual genesis on this fruitful planet, but this natural freedom is immensely circumscribed as it's exchanged for the civil liberties of the State. He indicated that the supplanting of natural freedom is necessary for the obtainment of greater power for the greater collective community, but the prospect of obtaining superlative capabilities comes with the price of constraints. Yet this notion of natural freedom conflicts with Thomas Hobbes rendition on the state of nature because he illustrates that nature, interface through savagery. The illusion of a free society with unbiased laws created by the collective and ratified by the legislator, enables the society to have a sense of morality and perform a ceremonial civic duty to uphold the laws they finance with commitment. Rousseau states in the opening page that, "Man is born free, but everywhere he is in chains. One thinks himself the master of others, and still remains a greater slave than they." These chains that Rousseau refer to are the constraints that are strategically placed on the freedom of the residents of the state. Since laws consult the public interest of the people collectively and suppress the private interest of the individual, they are essentially chains on the minds and souls of mankind, because people are used as vessels by the state to fulfill its agenda, under the guise and illusion of individual power to implement change in the collective. The author of Leviathan, Thomas Hobbes eloquently emphasizes that the state of nature is, in its rawest essence, chaotic and savage. In Chapter thirteen of his work Leviathan, he depreciates man's role in the state of nature by saying, "the life of man, solitary, poore , nasty, brutish and short"(pg. 186). From his perspective, due to the fact that humans dwell in this catatonic state of destitution, humans naturally yearn for peace. Rousseau’s Second Discourse The last paragraph of the prelude to the Second Discourse is an impassioned appeal whose scope transcends the boundaries of time and space alike, calling for readers to pay attention to the history of man and society that Rousseau is on the verge of putting forth. Beginning with this authorial intrusion–a form of literary apostrophe–the essay adopts historical writing as its primary narrative mode. This method stands in direct contrast with the approach Thomas Hobbes takes in his Leviathan, in which the Englishman sets out to prove propositions as one might do geometrically, by preceding from valid arguments and sound premises. Most importantly for Rousseau, however, is not necessarily how history lets him see how men might have been or how history lets him strike a balance between grasping the intricacy of human history and succeeding fluidly from one thought to another; it is how framing his work in such a way lets him give the greatest demonstrative proof of the point he makes. The first part of the work consists in a history of mankind until the institution of the social contract, and it reads easily and freely, just as man in Rousseau's conception was in those days. The second part of the Second Discourse, which deals with the critique of the social contract itself, however, reads much more heavily, as if Rousseau were attempting to give the reader a taste of the gravity the social contract itself imposes upon man. The opening lines of the second half already launch his scathing attack on civil society by associating this notion with a man who takes advantage of his fellow men: The first person who, having enclosed a plot of land, took it into his head to say this is mine and found people simple enough to believe him, was the true founder of civil society. What crimes, wars, murders, what miseries and horrors would the human race have been spared, had someone pulled up the stakes or filled in the ditch and cried out to his fellow men: "Do not listen to this imposter. On three occasions, the Supreme Court of Virginia has declined ruling on whether the relationship with an assailant 's wife deprives a defendant of the right to self–defense. The second is the doctrine of affirmative defenses. There are two types of Affirmative defenses: justifications and excuses. In effect, if a defendant can establish a defense, the defendant should be acquitted because society believes he took the right or at least a tolerable action. Essay On Burberry April 14, 2016, Burberry reported weaker than expected sales and predicted earnings this year at the low end of estimates, sending its stock down the most in six months and capping a dismal week for the luxury–goods industry (Bloomberg, A. Roberts, 2016). The truth is that this is not the first time that the fashion megahouse has reported poor performance. Burberry shocked the markets back in 2012, with a warning that sales had stalled in the clearest sign that slowing demand from China had started having an impact on the luxury sector. In regards to the brand's decision to assign Mr. Bailey as both the CEO and Creative Officer of the house, the decision remains to be seen. To sum up, there is no easy answer on what should Burberry do next. The internal factors reflect a need for a substantial change in the company's managerial cognition and decision making as well as rearrangements in the company's core in order to stengthen its desirability and relevance to the consumer. Burberry needs to build its culture through a new strategy to reflects their values in everything they do. The Enlightenment was an 18th century movement in which rationality and science were placed as the number one things a human could have (Brians). The Enlightenment also propagated the idea equality and liberalism (Brians). Romanticism was an international movement which occurred after the Enlightenment during the late 1700s to the mid– 1800s (Melani). It placed emotions at the forefront of human thought (Melani). In the natural state, "Every man was continually engaged in a war against all other men ("bellum universale")" ("The Philosophy of Thomas Hobbes") in an effort to gain power ("Thomas Hobbes"). In Hobbes's natural state, all men are equal insofar that each man is able to kill every other man, be it through sheer force, cunning, or by joining his power with others against a stronger foe (Williams). This "equality" leads Hobbes to claim that "there is no natural source of authority to order [men's] lives together," (Williams). Also in Hobbes's bellum universale, "'nothing can be unjust. The notions of right and wrong, justice and injustice have no place [in the state of nature],'" (Williams). The combination of Hobbesian equality and lack of a universal moral system allow there for no agreed authority to decide if anyone's actions are allowable or not. Unless "people share the same moral ideas...at the level of individual judgment," (Williams), no conclusion may be arrived at. However, identical moral ideas for each and every judgment on each and every person are possible when political authority exists. In a Hobbesian society, all men (except the chosen ruler or ruling body), agree to give up or limit their rights (especially the singular right of nature) in order to create a "social contract" which ... This is the major question that has led to much debate within the early history of America (P. 1). Some historians argue that Thomas Jefferson did, in fact, throw away his commitment to states' rights and constructionism by the large purchase of Louisiana for the U.S. (P.1). On the other hand, some believe that President Jefferson supported his political beliefs, the fortification of the republican government, with the Louisiana Purchase (P. 1). David A. Balleck states that the Louisiana Purchase was "the greatest achievement of Thomas Jefferson's presidency" (P. 14). With the addition of the new territory to the United States, President Jefferson secured the nation "for generations, if not centuries to come" (P. 14). Jefferson was confident that purchasing the Louisiana Territory would encourage the development of an upright Republican populace (P. 14). Surprisingly, he had many reservations about his authority to purchase Louisiana, but that did not stop him from laying the treaty before Congress (P. 19). He also knew that, by purchasing Louisiana, the Federalists power might be lost, but he still pushed forward with the treaty (P. 19). Although many historians criticize President Jefferson for giving up his most visible political convictions by purchasing Louisiana, he knew that it would double the size of the United States and ensure much land expansion for the country (P. 20). He strongly believed that the new territory was "essential to national security" (P. 21). • 63. The Louisiana Territory And How It Changed America Forever The American landscape has always been that of great majestic glory. But this was not always so. The westward expansion was not always in the cards for the Americans. The French had mostly settled from the Mississippi River in the east to the Rocky Mountains in the west and from the Gulf of Mexico in the south to the Canadian border in the north. With the Louisiana Purchase the U.S acquired most of that land. How did this land help define the United States of America as a Nation? This essay will discuss the actions leading up to the Acquirement of the Louisiana territory and how it changed America forever. In 1762 France ceded French Louisiana west of the Mississippi River to Spain. The French also transferred almost all of its remaining North American holdings to Britain in 1763. Spain was no longer a dominant country and they did little to develop Louisiana during the next three decades in which they held it. Spain in 1796 allied itself with France causing Britain in a bold move to use its navy to cut off the Spanish from reaching America. The Spanish in 1801 signed in secret, a treaty with France to return Louisiana Territory to France. This set off a series of concerns for the Americans. Americans had been moving westward into the Ohio River and Tennessee River valley areas since the 1780's and the Port of New Orleans was a strategic port of entry as well as the Mississippi River which was needed if the U.S was going to be able to ship good through the Gulf of Mexico. ... In the "Leviathan" by Hobbes and "Two Treatises of Government" by Locke, the primary focus was to analyze human nature to determine the most suitable type of government for humankind. They will have confounding results. Hobbes concluded that an unlimited sovereign is the only option, and would offer the most for the people, while for Locke such an idea was without merit. He believed that the government should be limited, ruling under the law, with divided powers, and with continued support from its citizens. This absolute Sovereign will gain power when the citizens have given up the entirety of their rights to this new authority and agreeing to a covenant. This is considered a rational action, and is the only option for the body of people to smoothly come together. When that happens, an organized society forms, in which the consequences of not adhering to the rules and regulations of the covenant will be so severe, that no one would attempt to violate this contract and disobey the Sovereign. That can happen since first, the Sovereign has deadly force and is permitted to use it whenever he or she likes, and, second, the citizens have parted away with all their rights, and cannot protect themselves from this Sovereign. That fact creates a fearful, and therefore, obedient society. This limitless Sovereign is justified, based on information from the "Leviathan." As we can infer from Hobbes' views on human nature, people will always act selfishly and in an evil manner to obtain the things that they want. As a result, for people to contract into a peaceful society that will have what they want and need readily available, they must be bound by force. If this distrustful group of people had an inclination that the governing authority was weak, they would overturn it, fatefully returning them to the state of nature. Sailes–Irving APUSH Summer Assignment Chapter 1: Chapter 1 focused on introducing two politicians that were about to have a duel on July 11, 1804. Aaron Burr was the third vice president of the United States and the vice president during Thomas Jefferson's term. Alexander Hamilton was a founding father of the United States and apart of the federalist party. Both Hamilton and Burr were each other 's political rival and would insult one another until they arranged a duel to end their dispute. The duel ended with Hamilton shooting Burr in the right side causing him to die the next day. Newspapers exaggerated the situation by making it seem like Hamilton murdered Burr out of cold blood and dwindling his reputation as a politician. What interested me in this chapter was that in the past they used dueling as a way to handle disputes between one another. However, I don't think that dueling was the smartest method of settling a coral between people because it is a selfish act that is similar to suicide and risk ruining your life. Chapter 2: Chapter 2 consisted of Hamilton considering to resign from being the secretary of treasury if his fiscal was rejected because he would then of no use but Jefferson suggested that he could possibly help Hamilton. Throughout history, there have been many radical thinkers whose ideas, though initially criticized, have become the catalyst of great change. Though, the radical thinkers were met with the criticism and disdain of the people, eventually, their ideas slowly impacted society. The Enlightenment was one of the greatest time periods in history where many ideas and philosophies greatly influenced history as we know it. The Enlightenment was an intellectual movement that questioned the aspects of the absolutist regime of monarchs such as King Louis 14 of France, and strongly challenged the religious beliefs. In years prior to the Enlightenment, the people sought out answers from positions of authority, such as the church or monarchy. The Enlightenment emphasized an alternative, the use of reason to seek answers. With the emphasis on reason came many social and political philosophies that challenged the preconceived notion of divine right of the monarchy.
