This project, a materials library in Syracuse NY, was designed in comprehensive studio
in the second semester of third year. In order to have a constant outdoor climate in which
material viewers can comfortably and efficiently experience weathering effects on materi-
als, we have created an outdoor micro-climate to regulate outdoor space. The climate is
controlled by a large stone clad wall blocking the wind, enclosed by the facades of the
materials library and the administrative component and finally the stone clad entry wall.
This space is heated and maintained from geothermal ground source heat pumps. During
the winter and other cold months, the ground of the courtyard would heat up and melt the
snow to keep from icy build up. When the snow melts, or the rain falls (in the summer),
the water is drained out through drains located along the lower center of this space and
stored for grey water.
Being a material’s library, we focused on having every surface become part of the display/
library. All main walls are clad with different kinds of stone or wood, all floors are pat-
terned in wood and stone, on the second floor of the library the glass curtain wall holds
different kinds of glass. This glass enables someone to experience the effects of different
tints and types of glass on their view.
