Costa Rica-Personal Narrative Analysis
Over the summer, my church youth group and I set out for Costa Rica. While on the trip, God taught
me three lessons, thankfulness, looking at the positive side of situations, and listening to God. With
an awesome group of people by my side, we boarded the bus bound for the airport. A swift breeze
floated through the open windows and cooled us down while the moonlight illuminated the bus. I sat
in my seat talking to one of my friends, scarcely able to contain my excitement. To say the least, I
felt quite enthusiastic about the trip ahead. We arrived at the airport in the blink of an eye and we
started our journey! Rewind to December 2015, on a quintessential Wednesday night, I attentively
listened to my youth pastor speak about what amazing

Blood Bananas: Chiquita in Columbia
As learned in class, the advantages of international business are great, but so are the risks. Some of
the risks involve ethical issues as the ones Chiquita faced doing business in Columbia. Chiquita was
the first to successfully internationalize banana trade; Chiquita did so by paying special attention to
retail development and followed industry trends. Their competitive advantage was acquired when
the company revolutionalized the banana trade by using refrigerated ships for the first time.
Chiquita was involved in paying bribes to Latin American government officials in exchange for
preferential treatment, encouraging US coups against smaller nations, putting in ... Show more

Before a company decides to internationalize, many researches should be done on culture, political
situation and so much more. Knowing other countries' laws and regulations will prevent such
lawsuit against your company. Codes of conducts, ethics hotlines should be provided to employees
and that has to come from the top management. Companies should look at long–term goals versus
short–term goals; companies whose culture is to just make profits at any cost faces these type of
situation Chiquita faced often. Even though outsourcing is a great way to cut back on costs,
companies should be very careful which countries they select to outsource in to prevent them from
having a bad reputation. For example if a company chose to outsource in let's say Nigeria, things are
very corrupt and doing business, outsourcing from there could be very profitable but in a very un
ethical way. How you want to represent your firm depends on the character of you as a CEO. Either
you make unethical decisions and get profitable very fast and get shares doubled in the wall street at
any cost, or you have ethics and you rather do things right and slowly get to profits. Strategic
planning is extremely important in doing business abroad, abiding by your core values and helping
the community, making sure the public recognizes your firm in a positive always attract customers
which generate more revenues. The current CFO Fernando Aguirre believes

Civil War In Costa Rica
One country I would like to visit in the next couple years is Costa Rica. Costa Rica is a Central
American country situated between Panama and Nicaragua. Costa Rica is popular tourist attraction
known for its rain forest, beaches, volcanoes and pre–columbian history.
Costa Rica is known for not having an army due to their belief in world peace. The war Costa Rica
was involved in was the Dominican Civil War in 1965 where they assisted their allies the
Dominican Republic in establishing a democracy. Prior to that Costa Rica was involved in its own
civil war in 1948. The Costa Rican civil war last 44 days and claimed approximately 2000 lives. The
war began when Jose Figueres with support of the United States led the "Caribbean Legion" in its

Similarities Between Costa Rica And Canada
My two countries are Canada and Costa Rica. These countries have many similarities and
differences. Let me start of with the main ones. While Canada has roughly 35 million people, Costa
Rica has just short of 5 million. Both of these countries are in The continent Of North America and
Canada is two hours behind Costa Rica.
Now for climate, these 2 countries are greatly different from each other when it comes to weather.
Canada is generally very cold and has a lot of snowfall throughout the year. Whereas, Costa rica is
the complete opposite. It is always very hot and humid there and rainfall is consistent throughout the
year. Costa Rica is classified in 2 main seasons "The Dry Season" which is December through April
and "The Rainy Season" which is May through November.
Want to know about the amazing food that comes from these countries, well here it is. Some of the
greatest foods in Costa Rica are Gallo Pinto, a breakfast dish consisting of beans and rice with a hint
of spice. And Olla De Carne a tasty beef stew that you will find in many homes in Costa Rica. Now
for the best Canadian foods. If you ever go to Canada you have to try Tim Hortons, ... Show more

The Pros And Cons Of Costa Rica
10. Conclusions Since 1985 and after a severe economic crisis Costa Rica has been implemented a
trade liberalization and a foreign investment attraction policy as a core development program. With
a FTA with the United States, the country consolidated a long relationship with its largest trading
partner. Under the Caribbean Basin Initiative all countries of Central America enjoyed preferential
treatment for almost all its exports. However, the unilateral nature of the CBI had weaknesses and
uncertainties that jeopardized growth and thousands of jobs. This issue gained recognition and
moved up to the political agenda of the region. Consequently, Costa Rica had to support the Treaty

CAFTA had the support of the Government, mass media and most part of the productive sector,
while the opposition encompassed labour unions, cooperatives, students and other social groups
without big economic resources. Although one week before the referendum, final polls predicted a
victory for the "NO Group", one day before the election a statement of the White House rejecting a
renegotiation in case of a disapproval of the Treaty changed the course of action. In October 2007,
Costa Rica narrowly approved the agreement (51.6% in favor and 48.4% against), enabling its entry
into force at the beginning of 2009. During 2008 the Government focused its attention on
reaffirming their obligations under the Agreement with the approval of a body of laws included in
the Implementation Agenda. For this reason, complementary reforms needed to take advantage of
the benefits of CAFTA and to reduce its disadvantages were moved into the background. Three
funds from international organizations were insufficient on the promotion of projects to support the
local production, while compensation policies to mitigate the negative distributive effects were

Tourism Planning
Introduction
Robinson and Novelli (2005) note 'niche tourism' has become a growing trend occurring in current
years in contrast to what is frequently related to as 'mass tourism'. Cusack and Dixon (2006) add
niche tourism is known to present diversity and provide opportunities with a form of tourism that
aims towards sustainability alongside considering expenditure from tourists. Furthermore, it
suggests a more practical set of strategies that distinguishes tourists. Gartner (1996) demonstrates
how niche tourism consists of distinct interests, culture and/or activity built tourism including small
proportion of tourist in authentic surroundings. Moreover, niche tourism can fall into more specific
categories where cultural, environmental, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It is important to note Ecotourism accounts for 6% of the worldwide GDP with an astounding
growing rate of 5% per annum (Nora, 2012).
Page and Dowling (2002) cite the relevance of understanding the different components between
"hard" and "soft" ecotourism. For example hard ecotourism is the desirable type which emphasises a
long term attitude towards nature. Additionally, trips tend to be specialised i.e. undertaken for
ecotourism purposes only, with participants likely to be environmentalists who are dedicated to the
principles of sustainability (Sharpley and Telfer 2002). In contrast soft ecotourism is the
consideration of the short term and favourable with many participants who are tourists with less
appreciation for the environment. Moreover, soft ecotourism occurs in a less natural setting such as
wildlife parks, however is usually accompanied by a high level of service and facility provision
(Weaver and Lawton, 2002).
Orams (1995) highlights the purpose for ecotourism becoming an important aspect in recent years.
He suggests the term can be outlined back to the 1980's, with invention being the outcome of
increased acknowledgment of and response to negative effects as a consequence of mass tourism in
natural spaces. Middleton and Hawkins

Why Is Costa Rica Be Considered A Peaceful Country
Costa Rica is a democratic and peaceful country, and it has not had an army since the year 1949. The
oldest evidence of human occupation in Costa Rica is associated with the arrival of groups of
hunter–gatherers about 10,000 to 7,000 years BCE! The people of this era were nomadic. They
gathered in bands of about 20 to 30 members. The animals they usually hunted were giant
armadillos and sloths and mastodons. These animals became extinct about 8,000 years ago! In 1869
Costa Rica became a peaceful democracy with elections considered the first truly free and honest
ones in our country's history. Until the 1960s, Costa Rica depended on coffee and bananas for most
of its earnings. In the 1960s, beef and sugar became a greater importance, and the country began to
industrialize. Following a debt crisis in the early 1980s, the state reduced its role in the economy and
promoted export–oriented agriculture and industries. Since the late 1990s, tourism has been the
second largest source of dollars, after bananas. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Students are out on summer vacation, parents spend their yearly bonus from work, and every week
brings a new festival or holiday celebration. The annual Festival de la Luz, usually held the second
Saturday of December, ushers in the Christmas spirit with a huge parade and extravagant light
displays through downtown San Jose. No holiday is complete without traditional cuisine, and slow–
cooked tamales are the season's most awaited food. While recipes vary, a tamale is made from corn
flour stuffed with potatoes, vegetables, and a savory filling such as pork or chicken, wrapped in
plantain leaves and then steamed. The preparation is lengthy, and is usually a big family affair that
spans several days. Rompope, a version of eggnog, is the drink of choice, paired with queque

What Is My Struggles Essay
My Struggles
This narrative is going to be about my struggle story, seeing how I believe everyone has one during
their teenage years, mine however is a lot different than most. It is relatively disappointing and sad
for me, and I hope this doesn't happen to anyone else.
I have lived in 5 different houses during a ten–year period of time, and most of them were very nice
and in safe, social neighborhoods. I was doing very good in school, I was in the Honor Roll and the
GATE Program (Gifted and Talented Education), I had quite a few friends and I was pretty happy.
Then one day all of that got washed away when my parents told me the big news. We were moving
again, and at first, I thought that we were just going to move to another city and that I could still be
with my friends, but my parents ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
When I first started attending school here, my grades plummeted and four years later they haven't
come back up, at least not in any school here. My parents keep moving me to different schools,
thinking that it will help. But nothing has worked besides Penn Foster. I had a very difficult time at
my first school, where the teachers started slacking off and didn't really help the students. I never
received any especial help with the language either. I had to retake two subjects, coincidentally the
same subjects taught by the slacker teachers. My second school was a nice private international
school where I had to retake Spanish, however I could not continue going because of traffic
constraints. So, I had to go to a local public school and I have to say I am amazed to see how little
the government takes care of their public education system. Some teachers don't show up for class
for weeks and there are no substitutes, so we miss school. They play 2 sports here, soccer and
volleyball, and that's it, other than that it is quite limited. No football, no baseball, no track & field,
which it is frustrating because those are the things I actually like to

Intel's Training For Engineering And English As A Second...
Additionally, Intel was not satisfied with just bringing jobs and tax revenue to Costa Rica. The
company went a step further and developed the education system in a myriad of ways. This was also
advantageous for Intel's interests. Initially, Intel was concerned that Costa Rica did not have enough
skilled professionals to work in its new assembly and testing facility. In order for the plant to be
fully operational Intel would need to employ 1500 Costa Rican technicians (Cabrera & Unruh,
2012). Intel received authorization from the Costa Rican government to partner with two of the
country's largest universities, the Technical Institute of Costa Rica and the University of Costa Rica.

Once again, this was a success! In 2002, Intel embarked on the third phase which entailed
establishing even more highly complex programs and positions in Costa Rica. Hitherto, Intel only
had these complex programs and positions in other regions. The goal was to expand the
manufacturing, research, and development operations to Costa Rica. Intel collaborated with the
universities again and now built highly specialized laboratories and even created research study–
abroad programs for Costa Rican PhD candidates (Cabrera & Unruh, 2012). Interestingly, in 2004
only 10% of Costa Ricans who graduated from the programs worked for Intel afterwards (Cabrera &
Unruh, 2012). Many of the remaining graduates worked for other companies in the sector, some
companies which were Intel suppliers. However, this is still very smart business. In economics,
education is considered a positive externality as many of you hear today know. An educated work
force is conducive to economic development. In this case the development manifested itself in
various forms. Intel's profitability and globalization, the expansion of Costa Rican technology
exports, and foreign direct investment in the nation's economy. More importantly, this is global
citizenship.

Summary Of The United Fruit Co. By Pablo Neruda
The United Fruit Co has driven Pablo Neruda Bananas! The Pablo Neruda's, The United Fruit Co., a
free verse poem, published in 1950, emphasizes the domination of the United Fruit Company amid
the Columbian people. Pablo Neruda's The United Fruit Co. is able to greatly describe what
happened to the Colombian people when the Chicago based United Fruit Co. destroyed his home
and his people. The United Fruit Co., was very successful in Columbia, due to its location in the
Banana Republic and the poor hardworking people of Columbia. The poem deplores the exploitation
of the Latin American countries by North American companies. Throughout the poem Neruda is
able to bring to the surface the issues of corruption that big, greedy, and wealthy companies, such as
the United Fruit Co, bring to small, poor, hardworking countries in Central America with the use of
allusions and imagery.
Neruda organizes the poem into four stanzas that follows Neruda's stream of consciousness. Each
stanza represents events that occurred during the reign of the United Fruit Co. " The first presents
the scene after the creation of the world and the birth of the different companies. The second talks
about the dictatorship in South and Central America. The third presents the entrance of the United
Fruit Company and the last presents the consequences people face from the arising of the said
company"(Bayug Web). As Neruda mentions, "When the trumpet sounded everything was prepared

Ecotourism in the Galapagos Islands, Costa Rica and Tanzania
When it comes to the topic of ecotourism, most of us will readily agree that it is a less harmful
alternative to mass–tourism and that it promotes responsible and low–impact travel to areas where
flora, fauna and cultural heritage are the primary drawing power. Where this agreement usually
ends, however, is on the question of what the impact of ecotourism actually is and what its long–
term consequences are. Whereas some are convinced that ecotourism provides the basis for
sustainable development, particularly in places that suffer from exploitation and excessive resources'
usage, and that could only improve the general conditions of the local people, others maintain that
we are still far from true ecotourism, for many are those in the ... Show more content on

Nonetheless, since an overwhelming majority of the industry is owned and managed by foreign
operators, the social and economic contribution to the Galapagos Islands are minimal; "[w]hile
foreign visitors outnumber domestic tourists almost four to one, [...] just 15.1 percent of the foreign
expenditures stayed in the Galapagos local economy, compared to 95.2 percent of the money spent
by Ecuadorians" (130–1). Both mass tourism and ecotourism can arguably provide an excellent
opportunity for development, but their negative impact is sure to be seen, and could potentially
outweigh the benefits that they have brought. Another country that has significantly embraced
ecotourism is Costa Rica. A tiny Central American country located just a few hours' flight from the
United States, Costa Rica rapidly transformed to a green destination, and in 1992 the U.S.
Adventure Travel Society declared Costa Rica "the number one ecotourism destination in the world"

lack, varying from a stable democracy to the abolition of the army, and including one of the highest

My Vacation In My Life
It was the summer of 2015, and I woke up early for my two–week vacation to Costa Rica. It was
weird being up this early on summer break, but it was worth it. I made sure my bag was ready to go
and that I packed everything. I brushed my teeth took a shower, and put my sweatshirt and pants on.
From experience, I knew that the airport temperature would be cold so I wanted to feel warm. I
came downstairs and arrived in front of a plate of pancakes. When I was half way done my sister
finally came downstairs. My dad entered the kitchen, and he got a little worried he said, "If we don't
hurry we could miss our plane"! From the 4 years of traveling on a plane, we always were on time
and nothing bad ever happened, this might be the time. My family rushed to the car, and we all
started freaking out and my whole family was yelling and shouting. Everyone that passed us were
looking at us like crazy. We finally reached the airport and lugged our bags through the whole
airport trying to make our flight. My aunt called my mom wondering where we were. My mom said,
"We aren't going to make it. Just leave without us", then, my aunt asked what happened and what we
were going to do. My mom didn't have all the answers, but I knew we were going to figure it out as
a family like we always do. The next thing my family did was call the other two families because
they were going on later flights. So, my friends dad from the other family gave us the information
about their flight and gate number and my dad explained the situation to the airport staff and they
sorted out everything and the next thing I knew we got 4 tickets to Costa Rica. I looked at my phone
the flight was at 6:45 and it was 3:00, my family obviously didn't want to go back home so we
checked in and did all the other airport procedures. We were all so tired, right when we got situated
we fell asleep. Two hours later the family called us and it was them and their cousins, they met us at
the gate and we all explained what happened and we just lucky not everyone went to Costa Rica
together and we had some company on the way there. Once we were all set we looked around to see
where we could eat dinner, everyone was so hungry but, we didn't want to eat a lot. Whenever I

Costa Rica, a country of Central America, covers an area of 19,730 square miles. The capital is San
José. Extending from northwest to southeast, Costa Rica is bounded on the north by Nicaragua,
along its 185–mile northeastern coastline by the Caribbean Sea, on the southeast by Panama, and
along its 630–mile southwestern coastline by the Pacific Ocean.
Costa Rica has a narrow Pacific coastal region that rises abruptly into central highlands. The
highlands, forming the rugged backbone of the country, descend much more gradually toward the
generally wider Caribbean (Atlantic) Plain. The Pacific coast is generally lowland in character, and,
like the Caribbean coast, it is lined with white sandy beaches. The country has made use of its ...

The annual growth rate for Costa Rica is 2.4%. Currently it takes about 36 years for the population
to double. If this trend continues, by the year 2036 there will be approximately 7,346,000 people
living in Costa Rica. That means that there will be a population density of about 350 persons per
square mile.
Approximately one–third of Costa Rica's population is under the age of 15. This means that in about
10 years, when the country's young people start having children, will be even more over populated.
Because of their overpopulation problem, Costa Rican's will continue to be in poverty.
Costa Rica is a democratic republic. Its constitution, adopted in 1949, establishes independent
legislative, executive, and judicial branches. There is a unicameral Legislative Assembly of 57
members who are elected to four–year terms by universal adult suffrage. The assembly can pass
laws over presidential veto. Executive power rests with a popularly elected president, who chooses
the cabinet, and two elected vice presidents. The president serves a four–year term and may not
succeed himself. The judicial system is headed by the Supreme Court of Justice, which has the
power to rule on the constitutionality of legislation. The Supreme Electoral Tribunal, an independent
body elected by the Supreme Court, oversees Costa Rican elections.
Primary education is free and compulsory for all Costa Rican children. It is estimated that about 90

Costa Rica is not a typical Central American country. The uniqueness of the country arises largely
from the construction of one of the most accessible and progressive public education systems in

The Age Of Exploration By Christopher Columbus
The fifteenth to seventeenth century is known as the "Age of Exploration". Europe began to
colonize the countries they had "discovered". A major part of the world that they colonized was
Latin America. Spain was the first to colonize, and the United States started to take interest in Latin
America towards the 19th century. Europe and The United States both took interest in Latin
America, but for different reasons.
Spain was the first European nation to colonize Latin America, beginning with Christopher
Columbus ' voyage in 1492. Columbus conquered Hispaniola, an island in the Caribbean Sea. A few
decades later, Spain sent Hernando Cortez to conquer the Aztec Empire in 1519. In 1535, the
Spanish moved deeper into South America and conquered the Incan Empire with the help of
Francisco Pizarro.
When Europeans explored the world during the "Age of Exploration", they colonized areas for a
number of reasons. One reason was to spread Christianity. The Spaniards believed it was their God
given duty to convert people to Christianity. A second reason was to acquire wealth through trade
and exploitation of other countries' peoples and natural resources. Colonizing and acquiring the land
in Latin America also led to an increase in geopolitical power over other European countries.
The United States took interest in Latin America for economic and political reasons. The banana
appears to be a distinct reason as to why the United States went over to Latin America according to

Costa Ric My First Real Out Of The Country Experience
Costa Rica 2013– My first real out of the country experience. It's spring break and my family and I
are going to Costa Rica. I have been to the Bahamas for a week when I was really young, and I've
gone to Canada, our neighbor to the north, many times. This is cooler, I am eleven now, basically a
teenager. I deplane the aircraft, somewhat unwillingly since I was in the middle of the movie. My
eyes were glued to the animation on the screen plastered to the seat in front of me. Outside, it is
dark, but when i get out, I expect a dense rainforest. I expect a toucan sitting in a tree to the left. I
expect trees that tower to the heavens.
When I get out I see a dirt area and a big building in front of me. Trees are rather sparse. I only
fauna visible to me at this time is are a few squirrels I see in the corner of my eye. I am a little
confused. We walk into the structure. Today, I learned one major thing, customs are a BORE! It took
us about a year to get through.
When we get to the hotel I expect some sort of Holiday Inn or Best Western type deal. I am
surprised to see a chic resort. It is stunning. Dad says it's some sort of timeshare property. At the
main office they tell Mom that we will be staying at "Jobo 13", pronounced hobo thirteen. This
causes me and my sister, who's two year younger, to lock eyes and grin silently. My brother on the
other hand bursts into giggles. He is five years younger than me. That should explain enough.
Mom says our room looks wonderful as we

The Coffee Crisis

2/5/2012
2/5/2012
Tamara Young
To begin, The Coffee Crisis is about an acute coffee crisis and how it threatens millions of small
coffee farmers around the world and is putting economic growth, as well as social and political
stability, at risk in scores of coffee producing countries in Central and South America, Africa and
Asia. In 2004, the governments of coffee producing countries were considering how to respond to
the dramatic decline in coffee prices caused in part by a large increase in coffee production in Brazil
and Vietnam. Coffee was the main source of income for roughly 25 million farmers, mostly small
land holders, in Latin America, Africa, and Asia. Coffee prices had hit 40 year lows in 2001 and had
remained ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The crisis in the coffee sector continues. Its impact cannot be understated, since coffee constitutes
the livelihood of an estimated 25 million families around the world. In world trade, coffee is the
second leading commodity, after petroleum. The worldwide coffee market spans some 71 countries,
of which 51 are significant producers and 20 are key consumers. Prices have not kept up with
production costs to the extent needed to make participation in the coffee business profitable for most
producers, even though the crop year 2003–2004 witnessed a worldwide decrease in production.
(Central America – The Coffee Crisis: Effects and Strategies for Moving Forward, 1992) In coffee
producing countries, which account for over 26% of world consumption, the situation is more
diverse. In some countries, prices of coffee have fallen in local currency and consumption may
therefore be stimulated. In Brazil, the largest coffee market among producing countries, the
devaluation of the real has maintained prices of green coffee at pre–crisis levels. As a whole,
consumption in these markets is not expected to suffer any major negative impact. The root cause of
the coffee crisis can be linked to three factors: over production; under consumption; and market
oligopoly. In short, these are all problems associated with the economics of coffee farming. Without
resolution, they will lead to both social and environmental breakdowns. (Central America – The

Ever wanted to go south to a Latin American country? Well there is plenty to choose from but my
best pick of where to go would be to this little, beautiful country culturally and physically, called
Costa Rica. You don 't believe me, huh? Decide for yourself. Costa Rica 's general information
Costa Rica is currently at the population of 4,500,000. The national territory is 31,682 square miles.
If you compare that to size of the United States at 3.79 million square miles, its a very small piece of
land. The capital is San Jose located in almost the middle of the country. Spanish is the official
language, like many of the other surrounding countries. Their currency is called colon which was

Afro–Caribbean music like rumba, calypso and reggae are popular. In most of Costa Rica, ancient
instruments like ocarinas are being replaced by international instruments like accordions and guitars.
There are still folk styles, outside of Guanacaste, such as the Talamanca 's Danza de los Huelos and
the Boruca 's Danza de los Diablitos. Guanacaste is the major regin for Costa Rican folk music,
especially pre–Columbian styles like the Danza del Sol and Danza de la Luna of the Chorotega, who
also made popular the ancient quijongo (a single–string bow and gourd resonator) and native oboe,
the chirimia. Costa Rica 's population never developed a major rhythm or style that became a major
part of popular music, and Costa Rica has not produced a great literary or other artistic tradition.
There have been exceptions, such as the Costa Rican landscape school of painting in the 1920s. In
the late 1980s local artists and bands became famous for having their own original material, such as
José Capmany, Café con Leche and Inconsciente Colectivo; some of them had fans from outside of
Costa Rica, like Editus, a Grammy winning contemporary jazz ensemble. At that time a popular
Latin genre developed, chiqui–chiqui as it was known, led by bands such as Los Hicsos and La
Banda. Chiqui–chiqui was a commercial approach to music and soon disappeared. From the late 90
's to present time, there has emerged a newer rock style led by bands such as Gandhi, Evolución,

Central America Free Trade Agreement
Central America Free Trade Agreement and
Its Economic Impact
Overview
Negotiations started in early 2004 on the Central America Free Trade Agreement, later on in the
negotiation process the Dominican Republic joined to make CAFTA–DR. The original countries
that made up CAFTA were Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua with the
Dominican Republic joining forces later on. CAFTA was coupled together with NAFTA and the
Canada–Costa Rica Trade Agreement separating them from the Free Trade of the Americas
Agreement otherwise known as, FTAA. (WIKI) While separating from other trade agreements the
main goal of CAFTA was to create not just a trade agreement with lower tariffs, but to create a free
trade area. CAFTA has been ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It inevitably is the first trade agreement between the United States and a group of smaller
developing countries. (wiki) While the agreement was signed in 2004 it was not until 2005 that it
was passed in the US Senate. It did not go into force in the US until 2006 with El Salvador,
Honduras, Nicaragua, and Guatemala following suit the same year. The Dominican Republic put the
agreement into full force shortly after in early 2007 while it took Costa Rica a half decade to get the
agreement put to force, in early 2009, after signing in 2004. (ustr.gov)
Economic Impact The effects of globalization were minimal in Central American countries until the
passing of the CAFTA–DR. It raised issues in the US and with anti–globalization groups. With that
being said the positive impact the agreement had in these areas was substantial. It allowed foreign
capital to flow into the smaller developing country markets allowing the economies to grow and
advancing investment and the generation of emerging businesses all the while raising the standards
of living in the countries. Though not all the positives benefit the Central American Countries. By
signing this agreement this opens up import markets for the US that they never thought would be
open and without tariffs nonetheless. (wccn) As the negatives usually over shadow the positives
there are always some. The big negative for example of the Nicaraguan poor is that most of them are

The Importance Of My Freshman Year In High School
Freshman year, I wasn't just a freshman I was freshmeat, a newbie, a nobody. I was at the bottom of
the High School social class web. Freshman year was not at all like the movies portray it to be. It
was better than expected actually, with the exceptions of having my locker vandalised with "Gay
Dick" written on it I didn't let it bother me because I knew personally I was stronger than the people
who wrote that. Freshman year I managed to balance my first job, school and my first time being in
a team; spring track all season and it showed me i'm capable of anything if I put my mind to it.
Freshmen year back to school night coach Banta found out I was a Bonilla and since all my siblings
had gone to Manchester Regional High School he wasn't embarrassed to embarrass me with yelling
" ONE LAST BONILLA" over and over. I quickly pulled my hoodie over my head and pulled the
string in order to hide my luminous red face and swiftly walked away. One of the best things that
could have happened during my lifetime was my terrible no good very bad cousin having a baby. I
know you may question as to why. Well my cousin is a very irresponsible woman and at the age of
25 have four kids with each having different fathers.

Advantages And Disadvantages Of Bananas
deforestation and unhealthy soil cause erosion, and the runoff causes frequent flooding and damage
from sedimentation. In a 1997 study done off the coast of Costa Rica, it was discovered that 60
percent of the coral reefs in Cahuita National Park had been severely damaged due to runoff from
coastal banana plantations (Cohen, 2009). Furthermore, bananas are grown as a mono–culture,
where all the bananas on a plantation are genetically identical. Although this makes crops easy to
manage, these bananas face an increased risk of being wiped out by a single type of pest, fungi or
disease, and will all be severely attacked if the pests develop resistance to pesticides. In order to
prevent this from happening even more chemicals are used. It is estimated that 30 kilograms of
pesticides are used per hectare per year on a banana plantation, whereas only 2.7 kilograms are used
for the average European cereal crop (Cohen, 2009).
The banana field workers (also called 'bananeros'), often untrained, and marginalized workers, lack
sufficient precautionary instructions or protective equipments. According to Ivan Clavijos, an ex–
conventional banana producer, despite wearing masks, goggles, and gloves, chemical gases can still
get absorbed in the workers' clothes, and through sweats will enter the body, blood, and liver via
pores on the skin, producing ammonia in the blood, or can result in loss of sight, hearing, or sterility,

Popular Musical Development And Societal Development
The Start of Tropicalismo
Popular musical development and societal development are usually parallel with one another. Artists
and musicians can change a society and have an enormous impact on how a country runs itself. A
good example of how a country can be influenced by new, innovative music would be the
Tropicalismo movement. Caetano Veloso is a Brazilian musician that started the Tropicalia
movement and created music that combined many elements of different music together, and Veloso
did this with other tropicalists. The background of Caetano Veloso, the two songs Caetano Veloso
produced, information about Tropicalia, and the background of Brazil can help us comprehend how
music has a great impact and influence on society. Tropicalia is more than just a music genre
produced in the late 1960s, but a social–political movement that radically changed the way
Brazilians saw contemporary Brazilian music.
Caetano Veloso's start as a Brazilian musician was back in 1942 when Veloso finished school in
Santa Amaro, and he moved to Salvador where he learned how to play the guitar and sing. (Veloso,
Caetano) Veloso would spend his time at bars with his sister and perform music for people's
entertainment. Veloso met Gal Costa, Gilberto Gil, and Tom Zé in 1963 where they started musical
shows as a group. (Veloso, Caetano) One of the musical shows that they started was Vila Velha
theatre with Veloso directing the theatre. In 1965, Veloso left Federal University of Bahia to go to

Case Study Of Costa Crociere
Costa Crociere S.p.A. is an Italian cruise line company. It was founded in 1854 in Genoa as a cargo
shipping company. In the first decades of the XX century, the operations expanded at great speed
until 1947, when passenger transportation services between Italy and South America were
introduced. In the following years the company converted all its business full–time cruising and in
the 90's it became one of the biggest cruise operators in Europe.
Until 1997, Costa Crociere was a family–owned business, but that year the majority of its stakes
were sold to Carnival Corporation & Plc, an American conglomerate that owns some of the most
important cruise line companies in the world. Costa Crociere, now also known as Costa Cruises

The term "student athlete" has been around since the marriage of sports and academia. However,
how seriously is this idea taken? SNL and John Cena use the skit "Science Presentation" to parody
the tumultuous world of scholarly athletics.
Student athletes understand the influence of academics on their athletic future. In the words of John

Nevertheless, the sham of a science project continues when the students present their projects. The

The obvious difference in difficulty aside, his scientific interpretation of the bananas, hits the nail
right on the head, " Banana is a yellow snack that monkeys eat. They is five types of bananas: yella,
brown spotty, very brown, green, and round. I used to not like bananas because they looked like
boys' wieners, but now I like them because they are yummy."
However, despite the excellent presentation and satisfying the requirements, one of the students tries
to point out that one of Ray's bananas is in fact an orange. This leads to the sterling interjection of,
"Are you trying to lose us the game nerd?", which demonstrates the main point of why athletics is
favored over academics, it's all about the money.

The Features Of Corruption Of Latin America
Corruption exists to some extent in all countries. But in Latin America, corruption seems an
inextricable part of life. Some schools of thought, particularly those in the political science circle,
view corruption as functional to the maintenance of a political system. Meaning, corruption may not
be ideal, but it represents a way for people to access resources that would otherwise be unavailable
to them. In sharp contrast, economists point to the many downfalls of corruption: a climate of fear
and lack of trust in public institutions, a weakening of the democratic system, increased inequality
and violence, diminished economic growth, and so on. This paper examines the features of
corruption in Latin America and discusses their implications. To begin, it is useful to understand
what precisely corruption entails. Many definitions exist, but a classic one is that of Joseph Nye,
formulated in 1967: "Corruption is behavior which deviates from the formal duties of a public role
because of private–regarding (personal, close family, private clique) pecuniary or status gains; or
violates rules against the exercise of certain types of private–regarding influence." From this
definition alone, we glimpse the problems associated with corruption. In any organization,
institution or group, rules exist to guide and facilitate interactions. In an environment where rules
can be circumvented, stakeholders have little incentive to act fairly or honestly. Indeed, this has been

Is there anything more rewarding than a fish or a lobster at dinner that you caught earlier in the day

people living in the city, whose age ranges between 35 and 60 years. Due to the exclusivity and
exquisiteness of the concept, a high–income, white–collar market would be favorable. Marketing

Guests would be given the chance to engage in activities like fishing, farming, gardening, reading,

9/11: A Short Story
Victor Solorio
"Mi hijo, levantate. Ya nos vamos," my mother whispered. "Wake up, my son. We're leaving." I
woke up confused with my eyes still half closed. It was 3 hours past midnight on a morning during
the Spring of 2002. "Why is there packed luggage? Where were we going? Are we going on

Estados Unidos." "The United States." At only 5 years of age, the only thing I knew about Los
Estados Unidos was the tragic events of 9/11 that unfolded 6 months prior to that night. The last
thing I remember about that morning was watching my small, emerald–colored house disappear into
the distance as our bus drove away.
Our first year in the United States was one of the most difficult and challenging years of my entire
life. I remember watching my mother cry every single day in the closet of that small one–bedroom
apartment. Cried, because she missed home. Cried, because everywhere we went, she would feel the
intense racist stares and mugs of people towards the new "immigrant family" in the neighborhood.

The author of the book, "The Fate of the Fruit that Changed the World" (2008), Dan Koeppel, who
is a famous journalist describes in a fascinating way banana's cultural importance, threats associated
with the crops of banana in the future and banana' history. Banana is a very delicious fruit and is
eaten all over the world. Banana is one of the world's fourth largest harvests in the world. Dole and
Chiquita are eminent American based distributors and producers of banana. They are claiming to
produce the banana on low price. In this book, Koeppel discusses the risks associated to the
plantation of banana around the world. He also discusses the fact that due to blight, the plantation of
banana is destroyed (Koeppel, 2008). He points out that the farmers and the producers have no
insight at all regarding this matter (Koeppel, 2008).
Book Review
In the book, Banana: The Fate of the Fruit That Changed the World (2008), Dan Koeppel talks about
the historical background of banana. He also talks about its' importance to African farmers and its'
importance to Latin America and Asia in economic terms. He describes that a disease called blight
has caused serious threats to banana crops, as it is rapidly destroying the banana crops around the

Costa Rica-Personal Narrative Analysis

  • 1. Costa Rica-Personal Narrative Analysis Over the summer, my church youth group and I set out for Costa Rica. While on the trip, God taught me three lessons, thankfulness, looking at the positive side of situations, and listening to God. With an awesome group of people by my side, we boarded the bus bound for the airport. A swift breeze floated through the open windows and cooled us down while the moonlight illuminated the bus. I sat in my seat talking to one of my friends, scarcely able to contain my excitement. To say the least, I felt quite enthusiastic about the trip ahead. We arrived at the airport in the blink of an eye and we started our journey! Rewind to December 2015, on a quintessential Wednesday night, I attentively listened to my youth pastor speak about what amazing ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Some of the risks involve ethical issues as the ones Chiquita faced doing business in Columbia. Chiquita was the first to successfully internationalize banana trade; Chiquita did so by paying special attention to retail development and followed industry trends. Their competitive advantage was acquired when the company revolutionalized the banana trade by using refrigerated ships for the first time. Chiquita was involved in paying bribes to Latin American government officials in exchange for preferential treatment, encouraging US coups against smaller nations, putting in ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Before a company decides to internationalize, many researches should be done on culture, political situation and so much more. Knowing other countries' laws and regulations will prevent such lawsuit against your company. Codes of conducts, ethics hotlines should be provided to employees and that has to come from the top management. Companies should look at long–term goals versus short–term goals; companies whose culture is to just make profits at any cost faces these type of situation Chiquita faced often. Even though outsourcing is a great way to cut back on costs, companies should be very careful which countries they select to outsource in to prevent them from having a bad reputation. For example if a company chose to outsource in let's say Nigeria, things are very corrupt and doing business, outsourcing from there could be very profitable but in a very un ethical way. How you want to represent your firm depends on the character of you as a CEO. Either you make unethical decisions and get profitable very fast and get shares doubled in the wall street at any cost, or you have ethics and you rather do things right and slowly get to profits. Strategic planning is extremely important in doing business abroad, abiding by your core values and helping the community, making sure the public recognizes your firm in a positive always attract customers which generate more revenues. While Canada has roughly 35 million people, Costa Rica has just short of 5 million. Both of these countries are in The continent Of North America and Canada is two hours behind Costa Rica. Now for climate, these 2 countries are greatly different from each other when it comes to weather. Canada is generally very cold and has a lot of snowfall throughout the year. Whereas, Costa rica is the complete opposite. It is always very hot and humid there and rainfall is consistent throughout the year. Costa Rica is classified in 2 main seasons "The Dry Season" which is December through April and "The Rainy Season" which is May through November. Want to know about the amazing food that comes from these countries, well here it is. Some of the greatest foods in Costa Rica are Gallo Pinto, a breakfast dish consisting of beans and rice with a hint of spice. Conclusions Since 1985 and after a severe economic crisis Costa Rica has been implemented a trade liberalization and a foreign investment attraction policy as a core development program. With a FTA with the United States, the country consolidated a long relationship with its largest trading partner. Under the Caribbean Basin Initiative all countries of Central America enjoyed preferential treatment for almost all its exports. However, the unilateral nature of the CBI had weaknesses and uncertainties that jeopardized growth and thousands of jobs. In October 2007, Costa Rica narrowly approved the agreement (51.6% in favor and 48.4% against), enabling its entry into force at the beginning of 2009. During 2008 the Government focused its attention on reaffirming their obligations under the Agreement with the approval of a body of laws included in the Implementation Agenda. Cusack and Dixon (2006) add niche tourism is known to present diversity and provide opportunities with a form of tourism that aims towards sustainability alongside considering expenditure from tourists. Furthermore, it suggests a more practical set of strategies that distinguishes tourists. It is important to note Ecotourism accounts for 6% of the worldwide GDP with an astounding growing rate of 5% per annum (Nora, 2012). Page and Dowling (2002) cite the relevance of understanding the different components between "hard" and "soft" ecotourism. For example hard ecotourism is the desirable type which emphasises a long term attitude towards nature. Additionally, trips tend to be specialised i.e. undertaken for ecotourism purposes only, with participants likely to be environmentalists who are dedicated to the principles of sustainability (Sharpley and Telfer 2002). In contrast soft ecotourism is the consideration of the short term and favourable with many participants who are tourists with less appreciation for the environment. Moreover, soft ecotourism occurs in a less natural setting such as wildlife parks, however is usually accompanied by a high level of service and facility provision (Weaver and Lawton, 2002). Orams (1995) highlights the purpose for ecotourism becoming an important aspect in recent years. He suggests the term can be outlined back to the 1980's, with invention being the outcome of increased acknowledgment of and response to negative effects as a consequence of mass tourism in natural spaces. • 13. Why Is Costa Rica Be Considered A Peaceful Country Costa Rica is a democratic and peaceful country, and it has not had an army since the year 1949. The oldest evidence of human occupation in Costa Rica is associated with the arrival of groups of hunter–gatherers about 10,000 to 7,000 years BCE! The people of this era were nomadic. They gathered in bands of about 20 to 30 members. The animals they usually hunted were giant armadillos and sloths and mastodons. These animals became extinct about 8,000 years ago! In 1869 Costa Rica became a peaceful democracy with elections considered the first truly free and honest ones in our country's history. Until the 1960s, Costa Rica depended on coffee and bananas for most of its earnings. In the 1960s, beef and sugar became a greater importance, and the country began to industrialize. Following a debt crisis in the early 1980s, the state reduced its role in the economy and promoted export–oriented agriculture and industries. Since the late 1990s, tourism has been the second largest source of dollars, after bananas. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... What Is My Struggles Essay My Struggles This narrative is going to be about my struggle story, seeing how I believe everyone has one during their teenage years, mine however is a lot different than most. It is relatively disappointing and sad for me, and I hope this doesn't happen to anyone else. I have lived in 5 different houses during a ten–year period of time, and most of them were very nice and in safe, social neighborhoods. I was doing very good in school, I was in the Honor Roll and the GATE Program (Gifted and Talented Education), I had quite a few friends and I was pretty happy. I had to retake two subjects, coincidentally the same subjects taught by the slacker teachers. My second school was a nice private international school where I had to retake Spanish, however I could not continue going because of traffic constraints. So, I had to go to a local public school and I have to say I am amazed to see how little the government takes care of their public education system. Some teachers don't show up for class for weeks and there are no substitutes, so we miss school. They play 2 sports here, soccer and volleyball, and that's it, other than that it is quite limited. Intel collaborated with the universities again and now built highly specialized laboratories and even created research study– abroad programs for Costa Rican PhD candidates (Cabrera & Unruh, 2012). Interestingly, in 2004 only 10% of Costa Ricans who graduated from the programs worked for Intel afterwards (Cabrera & Unruh, 2012). Many of the remaining graduates worked for other companies in the sector, some companies which were Intel suppliers. However, this is still very smart business. In economics, education is considered a positive externality as many of you hear today know. An educated work force is conducive to economic development. In this case the development manifested itself in various forms. Intel's profitability and globalization, the expansion of Costa Rican technology exports, and foreign direct investment in the nation's economy. More importantly, this is global citizenship. • 19. Summary Of The United Fruit Co. By Pablo Neruda The United Fruit Co has driven Pablo Neruda Bananas! The Pablo Neruda's, The United Fruit Co., a free verse poem, published in 1950, emphasizes the domination of the United Fruit Company amid the Columbian people. Pablo Neruda's The United Fruit Co. is able to greatly describe what happened to the Colombian people when the Chicago based United Fruit Co. destroyed his home and his people. The United Fruit Co., was very successful in Columbia, due to its location in the Banana Republic and the poor hardworking people of Columbia. The poem deplores the exploitation of the Latin American countries by North American companies. Throughout the poem Neruda is able to bring to the surface the issues of corruption that big, greedy, and wealthy companies, such as the United Fruit Co, bring to small, poor, hardworking countries in Central America with the use of allusions and imagery. Neruda organizes the poem into four stanzas that follows Neruda's stream of consciousness. Each stanza represents events that occurred during the reign of the United Fruit Co. " The first presents the scene after the creation of the world and the birth of the different companies. The second talks about the dictatorship in South and Central America. The third presents the entrance of the United Fruit Company and the last presents the consequences people face from the arising of the said company"(Bayug Web). Ecotourism in the Galapagos Islands, Costa Rica and Tanzania When it comes to the topic of ecotourism, most of us will readily agree that it is a less harmful alternative to mass–tourism and that it promotes responsible and low–impact travel to areas where flora, fauna and cultural heritage are the primary drawing power. Where this agreement usually ends, however, is on the question of what the impact of ecotourism actually is and what its long– term consequences are. Whereas some are convinced that ecotourism provides the basis for sustainable development, particularly in places that suffer from exploitation and excessive resources' usage, and that could only improve the general conditions of the local people, others maintain that we are still far from true ecotourism, for many are those in the ... Both mass tourism and ecotourism can arguably provide an excellent opportunity for development, but their negative impact is sure to be seen, and could potentially outweigh the benefits that they have brought. Another country that has significantly embraced ecotourism is Costa Rica. A tiny Central American country located just a few hours' flight from the United States, Costa Rica rapidly transformed to a green destination, and in 1992 the U.S. Adventure Travel Society declared Costa Rica "the number one ecotourism destination in the world" (160). Its success finds its root in a mix of positive conditions that most of the other ecotourism sites lack, varying from a stable democracy to the abolition of the army, and including one of the highest standards of ... • 25. My Vacation In My Life It was the summer of 2015, and I woke up early for my two–week vacation to Costa Rica. It was weird being up this early on summer break, but it was worth it. I made sure my bag was ready to go and that I packed everything. I brushed my teeth took a shower, and put my sweatshirt and pants on. From experience, I knew that the airport temperature would be cold so I wanted to feel warm. I came downstairs and arrived in front of a plate of pancakes. When I was half way done my sister finally came downstairs. My dad entered the kitchen, and he got a little worried he said, "If we don't hurry we could miss our plane"! From the 4 years of traveling on a plane, we always were on time and nothing bad ever happened, this might be the time. My family rushed to the car, and we all started freaking out and my whole family was yelling and shouting. Everyone that passed us were looking at us like crazy. We finally reached the airport and lugged our bags through the whole airport trying to make our flight. My aunt called my mom wondering where we were. My mom said, "We aren't going to make it. Just leave without us", then, my aunt asked what happened and what we were going to do. My mom didn't have all the answers, but I knew we were going to figure it out as a family like we always do. The next thing my family did was call the other two families because they were going on later flights. So, my friends dad from the other family gave us the information about their flight and gate number and my dad explained the situation to the airport staff and they sorted out everything and the next thing I knew we got 4 tickets to Costa Rica. I looked at my phone the flight was at 6:45 and it was 3:00, my family obviously didn't want to go back home so we checked in and did all the other airport procedures. We were all so tired, right when we got situated we fell asleep. Two hours later the family called us and it was them and their cousins, they met us at the gate and we all explained what happened and we just lucky not everyone went to Costa Rica together and we had some company on the way there. Once we were all set we looked around to see where we could eat dinner, everyone was so hungry but, we didn't want to eat a lot. Whenever I ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

A major part of the world that they colonized was Latin America. Spain was the first to colonize, and the United States started to take interest in Latin America towards the 19th century. Europe and The United States both took interest in Latin America, but for different reasons. Spain was the first European nation to colonize Latin America, beginning with Christopher Columbus ' voyage in 1492. Columbus conquered Hispaniola, an island in the Caribbean Sea. A few decades later, Spain sent Hernando Cortez to conquer the Aztec Empire in 1519. In 1535, the Spanish moved deeper into South America and conquered the Incan Empire with the help of Francisco Pizarro. When Europeans explored the world during the "Age of Exploration", they colonized areas for a number of reasons. One reason was to spread Christianity. The Spaniards believed it was their God given duty to convert people to Christianity. A second reason was to acquire wealth through trade and exploitation of other countries' peoples and natural resources. Colonizing and acquiring the land in Latin America also led to an increase in geopolitical power over other European countries. I have been to the Bahamas for a week when I was really young, and I've gone to Canada, our neighbor to the north, many times. This is cooler, I am eleven now, basically a teenager. I deplane the aircraft, somewhat unwillingly since I was in the middle of the movie. My eyes were glued to the animation on the screen plastered to the seat in front of me. Outside, it is dark, but when i get out, I expect a dense rainforest. I expect a toucan sitting in a tree to the left. I expect trees that tower to the heavens. When I get out I see a dirt area and a big building in front of me. Trees are rather sparse. I only fauna visible to me at this time is are a few squirrels I see in the corner of my eye. I am a little confused. We walk into the structure. Today, I learned one major thing, customs are a BORE! It took us about a year to get through. When we get to the hotel I expect some sort of Holiday Inn or Best Western type deal. I am surprised to see a chic resort. It is stunning. Dad says it's some sort of timeshare property. At the main office they tell Mom that we will be staying at "Jobo 13", pronounced hobo thirteen. This causes me and my sister, who's two year younger, to lock eyes and grin silently. The Coffee Crisis | | 2/5/2012 2/5/2012 Tamara Young To begin, The Coffee Crisis is about an acute coffee crisis and how it threatens millions of small coffee farmers around the world and is putting economic growth, as well as social and political stability, at risk in scores of coffee producing countries in Central and South America, Africa and Asia. In 2004, the governments of coffee producing countries were considering how to respond to the dramatic decline in coffee prices caused in part by a large increase in coffee production in Brazil and Vietnam. Coffee was the main source of income for roughly 25 million farmers, mostly small land holders, in Latin America, Africa, and Asia. Coffee prices had hit 40 year lows in 2001 and had remained ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The crisis in the coffee sector continues. Its impact cannot be understated, since coffee constitutes the livelihood of an estimated 25 million families around the world. In world trade, coffee is the second leading commodity, after petroleum. The worldwide coffee market spans some 71 countries, of which 51 are significant producers and 20 are key consumers. Prices have not kept up with production costs to the extent needed to make participation in the coffee business profitable for most producers, even though the crop year 2003–2004 witnessed a worldwide decrease in production. (Central America – The Coffee Crisis: Effects and Strategies for Moving Forward, 1992) In coffee producing countries, which account for over 26% of world consumption, the situation is more diverse. In some countries, prices of coffee have fallen in local currency and consumption may therefore be stimulated. In Brazil, the largest coffee market among producing countries, the devaluation of the real has maintained prices of green coffee at pre–crisis levels. As a whole, consumption in these markets is not expected to suffer any major negative impact. The root cause of the coffee crisis can be linked to three factors: over production; under consumption; and market oligopoly. In short, these are all problems associated with the economics of coffee farming. Without resolution, they will lead to both social and environmental breakdowns. (Central America – The ... In a 1997 study done off the coast of Costa Rica, it was discovered that 60 percent of the coral reefs in Cahuita National Park had been severely damaged due to runoff from coastal banana plantations (Cohen, 2009). Furthermore, bananas are grown as a mono–culture, where all the bananas on a plantation are genetically identical. Although this makes crops easy to manage, these bananas face an increased risk of being wiped out by a single type of pest, fungi or disease, and will all be severely attacked if the pests develop resistance to pesticides. In order to prevent this from happening even more chemicals are used. It is estimated that 30 kilograms of pesticides are used per hectare per year on a banana plantation, whereas only 2.7 kilograms are used for the average European cereal crop (Cohen, 2009). The banana field workers (also called 'bananeros'), often untrained, and marginalized workers, lack sufficient precautionary instructions or protective equipments. According to Ivan Clavijos, an ex– conventional banana producer, despite wearing masks, goggles, and gloves, chemical gases can still get absorbed in the workers' clothes, and through sweats will enter the body, blood, and liver via pores on the skin, producing ammonia in the blood, or can result in loss of sight, hearing, or sterility, which he himself and many people he knows who work in banana ... • 55. Popular Musical Development And Societal Development The Start of Tropicalismo Popular musical development and societal development are usually parallel with one another. Artists and musicians can change a society and have an enormous impact on how a country runs itself. A good example of how a country can be influenced by new, innovative music would be the Tropicalismo movement. Caetano Veloso is a Brazilian musician that started the Tropicalia movement and created music that combined many elements of different music together, and Veloso did this with other tropicalists. The background of Caetano Veloso, the two songs Caetano Veloso produced, information about Tropicalia, and the background of Brazil can help us comprehend how music has a great impact and influence on society. Tropicalia is more than just a music genre produced in the late 1960s, but a social–political movement that radically changed the way Brazilians saw contemporary Brazilian music. Caetano Veloso's start as a Brazilian musician was back in 1942 when Veloso finished school in Santa Amaro, and he moved to Salvador where he learned how to play the guitar and sing. (Veloso, Caetano) Veloso would spend his time at bars with his sister and perform music for people's entertainment. Veloso met Gal Costa, Gilberto Gil, and Tom Zé in 1963 where they started musical shows as a group. (Veloso, Caetano) One of the musical shows that they started was Vila Velha theatre with Veloso directing the theatre. In 1965, Veloso left Federal University of Bahia to go to Rio de ... Intellectual property has the shelf life of a banana– Bill Gates The term "student athlete" has been around since the marriage of sports and academia. However, how seriously is this idea taken? SNL and John Cena use the skit "Science Presentation" to parody the tumultuous world of scholarly athletics. Student athletes understand the influence of academics on their athletic future. In the words of John Cena's character, Ray, "If I don't get an A plus on all of my final exams, I will voluntarily sit out that bowl game against Washington." However, despite the excellent presentation and satisfying the requirements, one of the students tries to point out that one of Ray's bananas is in fact an orange. This leads to the sterling interjection of, "Are you trying to lose us the game nerd?", which demonstrates the main point of why athletics is favored over academics, it's all about the money. • 63. The Features Of Corruption Of Latin America Corruption exists to some extent in all countries. But in Latin America, corruption seems an inextricable part of life. Some schools of thought, particularly those in the political science circle, view corruption as functional to the maintenance of a political system. Meaning, corruption may not be ideal, but it represents a way for people to access resources that would otherwise be unavailable to them. In sharp contrast, economists point to the many downfalls of corruption: a climate of fear and lack of trust in public institutions, a weakening of the democratic system, increased inequality and violence, diminished economic growth, and so on. This paper examines the features of corruption in Latin America and discusses their implications. To begin, it is useful to understand what precisely corruption entails. Many definitions exist, but a classic one is that of Joseph Nye, formulated in 1967: "Corruption is behavior which deviates from the formal duties of a public role because of private–regarding (personal, close family, private clique) pecuniary or status gains; or violates rules against the exercise of certain types of private–regarding influence." From this definition alone, we glimpse the problems associated with corruption. In any organization, institution or group, rules exist to guide and facilitate interactions. In an environment where rules can be circumvented, stakeholders have little incentive to act fairly or honestly. Indeed, this has been the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 73. 9/11: A Short Story Victor Solorio "Mi hijo, levantate. Ya nos vamos," my mother whispered. "Wake up, my son. We're leaving." I woke up confused with my eyes still half closed. It was 3 hours past midnight on a morning during the Spring of 2002. "Why is there packed luggage? Where were we going? Are we going on vacation?" I thought. My mother must have seen my confusion, as we boarded the bus and said "Los Estados Unidos." "The United States." At only 5 years of age, the only thing I knew about Los Estados Unidos was the tragic events of 9/11 that unfolded 6 months prior to that night. The last thing I remember about that morning was watching my small, emerald–colored house disappear into the distance as our bus drove away. Our first year in the United States was one of the most difficult and challenging years of my entire life. I remember watching my mother cry every single day in the closet of that small one–bedroom apartment. Cried, because she missed home. Cried, because everywhere we went, she would feel the intense racist stares and mugs of people towards the new "immigrant family" in the neighborhood. Cried, because our way of life in Mexico was worthless here. My father struggled to find a job as his electrician certificate in Mexico was nothing more than a piece of ...
