What should you do? • Listen carefully • Think neutrally • Look for central concept • Identify Q&A issues • Note whether Q's were answered • Summarize debate • ...
LISTEN Clarifying the Plan Walking Through the Logic Hit or miss? Clarification, new argument, or just an election speech?

Doctors Journalists Lawyers Scientists Psychologists Counselors Judge
Note-taking Skills Some like to “flow” I like to just take notes Abbreviate. Mindmapping if you need to. Listen more. Write less.
What to write about Science? Customs? What was the plan based on? Answer directly? Failed to answer? Asked irrelevant Q? Rebutted during Q&A Attitude problems Lack of sportsmanship Etc. Did not follow up Harm vs Benefit Feasibility …
This is how my notes look like… Constructive Speech Main point(s) Line of logic Critical Evidence - credibility? - Research type? - connection?? Cross-examination (ex. N2  A1) What was asked? Was it relevant?? Did the Q’s highlight problems? What was answered? Did receiver answer the question properly? Were there any critical “hit points”?
Rebuttal Speech Was there a constructive response to opp. side? Did the speaker summarize and clarify their pts? Did they cover stock issues? Any additional evid? Point out opponent flaws? Show understanding? Closing Speech Summarize their plan and stance? Emphasis on GOOD evidence? Point out where they won in Cx and other parts of the debate? *New evidence allowed, new arguments AREN’T.

  • 14. This is how my notes look like… Constructive Speech Main point(s) Line of logic Critical Evidence - credibility? - Research type? - connection?? Cross-examination (ex. N2  A1) What was asked? Was it relevant?? Did the Q’s highlight problems? What was answered? Did receiver answer the question properly? Were there any critical “hit points”?
  • 15. Rebuttal Speech Was there a constructive response to opp. side? Did the speaker summarize and clarify their pts? Did they cover stock issues? Any additional evid? Point out opponent flaws? Show understanding? Closing Speech Summarize their plan and stance? Emphasis on GOOD evidence? Point out where they won in Cx and other parts of the debate? *New evidence allowed, new arguments AREN’T.
