Editor's Notes

  • #2 Intro self HALE PhD Certified since 2004 Great tool In Grad School thought I was an ENFJ Start with story about when I was at JCU. Contracts, Details, Supervisor- all very S Had great ideas & she said, “what about this and this and this?” Tested as ISFJ Thinking abt work and my role there when I answered Through the course of the week, realized that while I could do S things, they are not my natural preference
  • #3 Perhaps there is communication problem In this group or others you are part of Talking around or over each other
  • #4 Maybe you’re feeling frustrated or unappreciated Or you see people on your team, in your group, and sense that they feel that way and you want to help Really can’t manage personalities or people Manage projects Lead people Lead people best when you understand them
  • #5 Tool
  • #6 Type is DYNAMIC Interaction of all 4 letters together and how they are expressed MBTI has multiple practical applications
  • #9 Handwriting MBTI shows you your preferences, so you can lean on them to develop skills in non-preferred area
  • #12 Going to quickly go through the 4 dichotomies so we have time to do hands on exercises As I go through them, indicate on your handouts what letter you think you are And how sure of that letter you are
  • #13 What do you notice about this picture, versus the previous one? I have a preference for I Planning this presentation was very energizing to me But giving this presentation is very extraverted activity that will drain me and require me to recharge
  • #14 Person who comes in to office & talks to everyone first Versus closed door for privacy E- distractions are energizing I- distractions are interruptions
  • #15 Next letter is about how you process information
  • #16 Qualitative researcher. Listened to women’s stories. Perfect fit for me as an N Still had to do the work of listening, transcribing, and coding Then translating it to dissertation- very S activity CAN and MUST do things outside your natural preference
  • #18 My mentor and previous supervisor are Ts Took me a long time to figure out There isn’t tone in her email and she appreciates ppl by giving them more work To her credit, she works hard on saying “thank you.” She has a team of Fs NEVER tell an F to not be emotional. That will shut them down. For an F emotions are facts!
  • #19 Can we guess why this is? Married to an F. Sometimes this is bad. We get each other all riled up.
  • #20 Think about how you interact with outside world Tackle projects Plan weekends or not Measure productivity
  • #21 Relate to work How self or co-workers might tackle projects Maybe you are a J who has been paired with a P and their work style drives you crazy Maybe you are a P and you are annoyed when someone who is a J is constantly nagging you for updates. It’s not due yet! Marathon Sprint
  • #22 When I emailed you results, I asked you to go through description, check off the words phrases that resonate Cross out ones that don’t If found your type, should feel good, comfortable Like coming home If off by one letter, read the descriptors for that type
  • #23 Blue diamond shows which preference you tap into first and which preference is extraverted/introverted
  • #25 Type table will always look like this USE pointer to circle on the chart I and E J and P Fs in middle
  • #28 Find your spot on table Block two spots away diagonally will be your type opposite
  • #29 Remember it’s opposites Not saying that this is how those types ARE But how they could be perceived by others Examples from my own life Husband is a P Leaves a trail in every room Goes to Meijer 3x/wk or more
  • #30 Lead with Heart of Type GO TO FUNCTION is first, then second Refer to blue diamond towards bottom of page 5
  • #31 How do you re/tell stories? What details are in/excluded? Email DON’T infer TONE! An ST will use email as post it notes Tell story of Matt and email versus me and email
  • #32 Can you think of a time when there was conflict in your work environment or family? Would you be willing to share? Maybe conflict is playing out because approaches are different Can you use type to help you move beyond an impasse?
  • #33 Laurel is SF Thank you for your help with __________
  • #34 ST- just the facts maam SF- Laurel- kind, loyal, helpful NF- empaths, healers NT- fastest processors Type doesn’t explain everything and is not only piece to choosing your career But can be helpful
  • #35 Work in lab? Group project? Tend to give instructions the way we want to receive them Need to remember that person giving you feedback and those who are receiving your feedback Are not always going to be same type with same preferences
  • #36 First 2 letters Energy and information Quadrants on the table
  • #37 Have to develop skills in non preferred areas We all USE all EIGHT FUNCTIONS Just not all at same time or with same level of proficiency
  • #38 Type won’t explain everything! Example of co-worker travelling and hyper focused on needing an oil change Dad when my son was sick Blue diamond- in the grip, go to tertiary function
  • #40 Type stressors
  • #41 Questions? Comments?
