After students are given an image they will write down words that they think of based on the picture. Following this, students will activate prior knowledge by telling me different brainstorming techniques that we have discussed.
IV) INSTRUCTIONAL ACTIVITIES/ TEACHER PROCEDURES
(2 minutes) I will pass out to each student a different picture and will instruct them not to look at their picture until everyone has received one.
(7 minutes) I will instruct students to write down any words that come to mind when viewing this picture. This is an idea start activity that will help ESL students.
(5) I will then tell students that they will be writing a three page story about this picture. To activate their prior knowledge I will ask students to raise their hand and tell me what techniques they can use for brainstorming.
(17 minutes) Students will then use these words to help them start brainstorming of a story using this picture. I will remind students that their stories can be about anything they want that incorporates the picture. The story could be about a character that is in this story; it could be used for setting. Their story could describe how the characters came to be doing whatever is in the picture etc.
(8 minutes) I will then instruct students to start writing their intro paragraph.
(6 minutes) I will close the activity by asking students to share their picture and some of their ideas for their story.
V) STUDENT ACTIVITIES
Students will sit at their desk quietly with a picture turned over on their desk waiting for instructor to direct them to flip it over.
Students will write down any word that comes to mind from viewing the image.
Students will then raise their hand and tell the instructor and class what are different forms of brainstorming.
Students will use the words they have written down from the picture to help them brainstorm their paper.
Students will start to write their first paragraphs.
Students will then share their ideas with the class.
VI) ASSESSMENT OF STUDENT KNOWLEDGE
I will assess students by individually asking students about their ideas for their papers. I will see if they are stuck on anything.
Students will share their story ideas with the class.
VII) EVIDENCE OF LEARNING
The evidence of learning will be their completed story.
VIII) TEACHER REFELECTION
I think this activity went well. I tried to leave it as open ended as possible however, Mary felt that she needed more direction. I told her that a good way to work with her list of words was to group them by setting words, characterization words, etc. In my procedure in the future I will instruct all students to do this to help them create ideas for their story.
