I have currently finished reading the book Leonardo The Artist. The book is made up by three of Da
Vinci's scholars. One part of the book entitled "The Painter" is by Anna Maria Brizio, the other part
is "The Sculptor" which is interpreted by Maria Vittoria Brugnoli and the last section is "The
Teacher" by André Chastel. The book is comprised of Da Vinci's notebooks with sketches and
comments on his work in progress; all of which was rediscovered in 1965. The general purpose for
this book is to show Da Vinci's ideology surrounding art and intellectual findings that contributed to
his talent. Leonardo Da Vinci was more than just a painter. He was also considered a sculptor and a
teacher. He found interest in mathematic, science and nature. This book reveals how boundless Da
Vinci's curiosity was. Da Vinci trained as a painter in the studio of Andrea Verrocchio. He devoted
long hours to the study of nature even on holy days. Da Vinci explored every branch of science
known at his time and proved to many that he was far ahead of his time. This is exemplified in his

Often described as an intellectual movement, the Renaissance was generally defined as an

I have always been intrigued with the Mona Lisa, I don't know why but there is something about her
smile and her eyes that captivates me. The realness of the painting and how ordinary the Mona Lisa
is the reason why I can look at this painting with great joy, it doesn't make me think too much, it
doesn't confuse me, the simplicity and the normalcy of this painting is what I enjoy so much.
However, after an analysis you can see that the painting isn't so ordinary.
The Leonardo de Vinci used oils to paint his picture. During the 15th century using oils was very

You can see that the painting seems to be made up of three triangles. Mona Lisa being the biggest
then the left top corner is the background and the top right corner, a continuation of the background.
From what we've read he designed this painting in an upright–triangular composition. However,
these two backgrounds seem to not be part of the same landscape. The left top corner seems more
shaded, and darker. Also the winding road I feel might symbolize troublesomeness, or decisions.
Where as, the right top side of the background is a little lighter in color and the path seems clear and
straight. By positioning the Mona Lisa the way Leonardo did creates balance within the painting. He
also did a wonderful job on the symmetry of her face and of the painting, between the objects in the
painting and the color used its self.
You can see that when viewing a painting like this there are many questions that arise in your mind.
Looking at the Mona Lisa I get drawn in and a sense of wonderment comes over me. I start to
imagine the person in the painting and what her smile was really about. A strong, confident women
is what I think she was, and that was brought out beautifully by de Vinci. I also think that the way he

Ancient Era Vs Renaissance Era
Great discussion post this week! You have chosen some great artifacts from each era. All are great
advanced designs for each era and truly fascinating to look at as well. Between the Saqqara Bird,
The Morgan Crusader Bible, and The Gutenberg Press you can see each era's culture through the
artifacts and how they do all differ. It is funny to notice though that the Ancient Era and the
Renaissance Era artifacts that you have chosen are both made out of wood. Even though these
periods are during two different times, wood was still used and carved for both artifacts. This was
something I just thought when looking at the images you have provided. I also wanted to mention
that the artifact you have chosen for the Ancient Era is similar to what I have chosen as well. I chose
the Shabti dolls, which is similar to the artifact you have chosen, although the Saqqara Bird's
purpose is still not really known. Anyway, there are many differences between all three artifacts. All
three are beautifully crafted, but in three different and unique ways for each era. The Saqqara Bird is
smoothly crafted and rather simple where the Bible and printing press from the other two eras are
more detailed and elaborate. You can see the changes in time through the artifacts and the skills and
culture through each. The printing press is a huge advancement and just goes to show you the
culture during this time period. The bird and the Bible also show the spirituality and faith and even
religion of each era, while the printing press does not. The manuscript that you have selected is also
made and written by hand in this era and the printing press in the next era shows how all that can
now be done by machine. All three artifacts are created differently because of the changes in each
time frame. You can see how the artifacts advance and how the cultures have evolved as well and

concern and belief for these people, while during the middle era it has more of a focus on religion

Messer Piero Fruosino di Antonio da Vinci, was an aspiring painter, sculptor, architect and a
scientist. This Italian genius who went by the name Leonardo da Vinci, was born in the city of
Florence on April 15, 1452. Da Vinci was said to have spent his early years in Archiano then his
later years with his extended family. Though Da Vinci's early life was not well known, it was learnt
that at age fifteen (15), his father apprenticed him to Andrea del Verrocchio. Verrocchio was the
most prominent artist of the Renaissance period and in the city of Florence at that time. Verrocchio's
apprenticeship generated opportunities for a multitalented self–taught individual to create some of

One of the longest running TV series of all time is the Simpsons. The Simpsons is an animated
sitcom that uses satire to depict the "average" American family. The Simpson Family consists of
Homer (father), Marge (mother), Bart (son), Lisa (daughter), and Maggie (baby). In 2007 The
Simpsons hit the big screen. This major motion picture about Springfield, the home of the Simpson
Family, and has just about everything possibly imaginable. Springfield however has a very large
problem, they pollute like no other place in the United States. It was not until Lisa Simpson proved
to the town how polluted the local lake was that change was instituted. After Lisa "saves" the lake
the city institutes wide spread trash and recycling procedures. However Homer doesn't want to wait
in one of the lines and instead dumps his trash in the lake. This is the straw that broke the camel's

The Great Artists Of The Conceptual Art Movement
When one thinks of Art the most popular image is of great works, famous for their visually pleasing
and intellectually rousing qualities. These works, aside from being visually and intellectually
stimulating, have been used to challenge and encourage an audience to think about what it's
representing in flexible and open–minded ways, this is usually done by shocking the audience out of
their "complacency" when viewing artworks. The great artists of the Conceptual Art movement
especially emphasised this by focusing more on the concept behind a piece than the art itself. Three
particular artists that are famous for challenging audiences with their work include Marcel Duchamp
(1887–1968), Jenny Holzer (1950–present) and Ai WeiWei (1957–present). Even though these three
artists are part of different times, countries, political and cultural movements, they all use their
works to confront and challenge every part of their audience including critics, the media and the

Leonardo da Vinci was born when his mother was not married, his parents were Florentine notary
Ser Piero and a peasant with the name of Caterina. He was brought up by his father and stepmother.
When he was five he moved to his father's estate which was close to Vinci, the Tuscan town where
he lived with his uncle and grandparents. He did not have a great education. He only new the basics,
which were reading, writing, and math instruction. Even though he did not have a good education
his artistic abilities were astonishing. When he was only fourteen, he began learning with the noted
artist Andrea el Verrocchio. He learned a numerous number of things including technical skills like;
metalworking, leather arts, carpentry, drawing, painting, and even sculpting. One of his earliest
pieces was a pen–and–ink sketch of a landscape in the Arno valley, which was done in 1473. When
he was twenty he was qualified for a membership to be a master artist and made his own workshop.
He still worked with his teacher for an added five years. He ended up leaving Verrocchio's studio in
1478n because he was offered his first independent commission for an altar piece for a chapel in
Florence's Palazzo Vecchio. He was asked to make two more commissions, but he left the city and
abandoned both which he never completed.

Vinci's Mona Lisa. The original piece of artwork was painted with oil on a white poplar panel in
Florence, Italy around 1503 during the latter part of Leonardo da Vinci's life. The artist was an
Italian Renaissance artist who had a wide variety of interests. The woman who is believed to be
depicted in the painting is Lisa Gherardini, a wife and mother of five children who married to an
older man named Francesco di Bartolomeo di Zanobi del Giocondo at the age of only fifteen. The
words "Mona Lisa" often translate to the words "Madam Lisa". Leonardo da Vinci's painting of
Mona Lisa has a strong resemblance to the description of the Virgin Mary, which during the
Renaissance period was viewed as a representation of the ideal woman. The artist achieves a sense
of softness around Mona Lisa's eyes and mouth, portraying a kindness and calmness about the
woman. Nevertheless, this painting was also one of the first portraits to have an imaginary
background, Leonardo strategically placed this mysterious background at the woman's eye level so

In the show House MD., Dr. House's bizarre personality brings on a rather unique style of managing

I believe Dr. House expresses the skill of delegation the best out of a skills, but he needs to be
always available to his subordinates in case of issues.
Availability as a supervisor helps boost morality, production, and understanding throughout the
work area. Most employees would choose to work for a supervisor or manager that is moving
around and checking up on their employees, rather than a person hiding behind a desk the whole day
delegating work through a phone, calling employees to the office for instruction, or intercom. In the
show, Dr. House is rarely sitting in his office during the day. He is in and out of hospital rooms
checking up on doctors, nurses, and patients. As I explained before, he has some bizarre and
questionable techniques, but he has a better understanding of the situation in each room to make
these decisions. A manager sitting in an office and not leaving cannot and should not make these
decisions because they do not know the situation. Having that experienced individual around also
helps boost the employee's confidence because if there is a mess up, Dr. House will be watching
over to ensure the procedures are correct. Last, he understands each situation, and if a problem
arises suddenly, he does not need a long brief of what is going on. He can get right to work with the

How Big Is My World
How big is my world? Everyone says that Holland, or Hope College, is a bubble. In someway I can
agree with that statement, but I also know that because there are other things out there, it is just a
stepping–stone to find out about the world. I have been lucky enough to been able to live in a safe
world due to my parents, but I have also been given the chance to explore what is out there. Some of
the ways that have given me a chance to understand how big the world is around me are through two
different roommate situations, previous experiences, and thinking big picture. Over the past four
years, I have had many different roommates, who all come with a different backstory. It is through
them that I have been given the chance to realize that my world had been bigger than theirs. My
freshman year roommate was from Michigan, went to a Christian school, and was valedictorian. My
high school experience was the exact opposite, Indiana, public school, and not number 1 in my
class. Our experiences were very different as she excelled in classes like religion and cultural
heritage as her school focused on those, but the science classes we took together I did a lot better.
This helped me see the world from understanding her background as she knew the more
hypothetical and questioning aspect whereas I knew the facts of what was around me. Though our
experience together, I became to realize how our educational experiences shaped us into how we
saw the world.

Leonardo Da Vinci is most famous for the Mona Lisa and his countless inventions. He was many
things, an inventor, an artist and a scientist. Here, we are going to mostly talk about his artist
side(Although, personally i would rather write about his inventor side) His two most commonly
known paintings were "Mona Lisa" and "The Last Supper". Two wonderful pieces of art by an
amazing artist. he was born on April 15 1452 in Vinci, Italy, died May 2 1519. He heavily
influenced the renaissance era and is still influencing us today.
At an early age, Leonardo da Vinci moved to Florence, where he apprenticed with the painter and
sculptor Verrochio. Da Vinci's brilliance was obvious even at this early stage in his life. He often
experimented with different artistic forms and techniques. Being surrounded by Italian art, he often
used oils in his paintings . His work sparked a new style of art in Italy. In 1481, at the age of 30, da
Vinci moved to Milan to work for the Duke of Milan. Although relatively few of da Vinci's paintings
and sculptures survive, two of his extant works are among the world's most well–known and
admired paintings. The first is da Vinci's "The Last Supper," painted during his time in Milan, from
about 1495 to 1498. A oil mural on plaster, "The Last Supper" was created for the city's Monastery
of Santa Maria delle Grazie. Also known as "The Cenacle," this work measures about 15 by 29 feet
and is the artist's only surviving

Around the age of 14, da Vinci began a lengthy apprenticeship with an artist named Andrea Del
Verrocchio in Florence. Where he then learned a variety of skills like metal working, leather arts,
carpentry, drawing, painting and sculpting. His earliest known work is a pen and ink drawing of a
landscape in the Amo valley. He later started his own work shop. Using his inventive skills, da Vinci
sketched war machines such a war chariot with blades mounted on the sides, and armored tank
propelled by two men cranking a shaft and even an enormous crossbow that required a small army

After exploring the contradictions in the lives of the Joy Luck Club such as, strength and
weaknesses, obedience and independence, individuality and society, joy and sadness, and hope and
despair. It really got me thinking about my strengths and weaknesses as a person (and where they
came from). Obviously, people's strengths and weaknesses are subjective so during the course of this
writing session I will either use my own personal opinion of what my strengths and weaknesses are.
