Ethical Issues in The 2002 Steven Spielberg Movie
Minority Report Technology is progressing every day. We have come so far in the past ten years.
Imagine life in 2054, and what life will be like. That is what Philip K. Dick did in 1956 when he
wrote the short story Minority Report, which was later produced as a movie. In the movie Minority
Report, a team of officers led by John Anderson (Tom Cruise), work together in the precime
division. They collect information given by precogs to find murder suspects and victims before the
crime actually happens. Precogs are three humans that were born with a brain disease. This brain
disease affected others but these three are the only ones who survived. The disease caused some
mutation and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Of course the precogs see this act and the crime is prevented and the man is arrested. This gave
Burgess the opportunity to kill her himself. He told the mother to meet him in the same location that
the crime was going to happen, he dressed the same way and killed her. When the images came up
of the murder, the files were deleted. They were seen as a copied

Monuments And Masculinity In Roland Emmerich's...
Monuments and Masculinity
Roland Emmerich's Independence Day (1996) mirrors the ideology of a sci–fi film outlined by
Susan Sontag in the Imagination of Disaster so closely that it borders on a lack of creativity. That is
what qualifies this film as a 'revival' of the sci–fi genre following revisionist works like Steven
Spielberg's E.T. the Extra–Terrestrial (1982). This film, among other things, believes that femininity
in leadership will lead to disaster on the political stage and that personal relationships should mirror
the ideals of this government balance. This scene uses framing and set design re–erect themes of the
traditional sci–fi ideology such as the military embodiment of masculinity and the weak femininity
of a 'scientist'. This scene also sets the stage for what Sontag calls the balance of a 'good war' and the
'yearning for peace' which unfolds throughout the film. The ideology of Independence Day is
despairingly unoriginal, touching on almost all themes outlined by Sontag as what makes the
science fiction genre.
Queuing up stage Sontag's third stage of the science fiction film, "In the capital of the country,
conferences between scientists and the military take place..."; of course, the difference being these
shots are in Area 51. Intertitles clearly define for the viewer where the jet is heading, doing so it is
reinforcing the authority they have to travel there. This is an ironic move considering the random
assortment of civilians they have on board, and the lack of authority they had not even an hour prior.
The set design and misé–en–scene are so blatantly full of military machismo as the president is seen
peaking his character metamorphosis between an effeminate man and the strong leader. Slowly, a
beyond oversized commercial airliner prop pulls into the base's set absolutely truncating the figures
in every frame. The minimalist décor on the base exterior of the base contrasts with the
extravagance of the ridiculous jet. The implications of the size of the machine and the machismo of
its' passengers, or the size of their genitals, is overbearing. It's one of the many phallic displays of
power and masculinity that can be seen throughout the film, but this one obviously aids as a visual

P.K. Dick’s The Minority Report and Steven Spielberg’s...
P.K. Dick's The Minority Report and Steven Spielberg's The Minority Report
Death can occur in four ways. A person can die from a physical illness, viruses and infections. A
person can die from an accident. A person can commit suicide. Finally a person can be murdered by
another person. What if murders could be prevented? In P.K. Dick's story The Minority Report, and
in Spielberg's film The Minority Report, the future can be altered by using incredible technology.
The success of Spielberg's adaptation of Dick's short story to film can be determined by the way
each was presented.

supposed to kill a person he never met Leopold ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The Minority Report by Spielberg is about a one man conspiracy to keep pre crime up and running.
In the book by Dick, there is a larger conspiracy to destroy precrime. The final results are opposite
as well; in the book precrime was maintained and still operational. In the movie, precrime was shut
down and destroyed. The methods of precrime are also different. In the book, there are three precogs
which mutter an indecipherable language, which a machine interprets into images of a murder. Then
a card comes out of the machine with the name of the killer and name of the victim on it. Spielberg
made a more modern method out of this. In the movie, images are taken directly from the three
precogs brain and then interpreted by a person who tries to find out the location of the murder. Also
there are two wooden balls made, one with the name of the killer and the other with the name of the
victim, on them. The movie also goes deeper into the creation of precrime, how crack babies whom
had an odd gift/curse of dreaming of murder became used to prevent murder. It also shows why
Anderton joined precrime, to make sure no one else would suffer like he did when he lost his son.
The precogs in the book and movie are very different. First off their names in the book are Donna,
Jerry and Mike. In the movie their names are Agatha, Arthur and Dashiell. The movie also involves
the precogs, or at least one of them, more into the story.

Minority Report: From Story to Screen Essay
Minority Report: From Story to Screen
Adaptations are never carbon copies. A prime example is Philip K. Dick's short story and Steven
Spielberg's 2002 film, Minority Report. The structure of the storytelling is indeed different as well
as other key elements. The narrative transforms its structure into a more episodic approach when
brought to the screen. Words on paper take on a new identity when brought to life on a visual basis.
Philip K. Dick's Minority Report, written in 1956, was ahead of its time. The short story explores
the consequences of technology and science and how the technology echoes the present state of
society. Both the story and the film emphasize the same basic themes, however the actual plot is ...

Even the characters have very different traits. John Anderton in the short story is rather old and
balding. He seems rather disgruntled and has an immense disliking for Witward. In Spielberg's film,
Anderton is played by Tom Cruise who is far from old and balding. Spielberg most likely chose the
young A–list actor as opposed to an older one that fits the profile of Dick's Anderton mainly for
money's sake. Simply having the name "Tom Cruise" in a movie leads many more people to view
the film, even if they do not necessarily know the story line. In the movie, Anderton's motive for
joining the pre–crime forces was because his son was kidnapped and murdered. As a result,
Anderton finds himself with a drug problem as a means of coping with his depression. In the film,
Anderton and his wife are divorced. However, in the beginning of Dick's story, Anderton has
suspicion that his wife, Lisa, is behind the plot to set him up. In the film, Anderton is fortuned to kill
Leon Crow, whereas in the story he is predetermined to kill a man by the name of Leopold Kaplan.
Anderton as a character deviates from story to film.
In addition to Anderton, the three psychic beings, dubbed pre–cogs, are exceedingly different in the
story and the film. In Dick's rendition, the pre–cogs consist of Mike, Donna, and Jerry. As kids they
were noted as having cognitive malfunction and were given psychiatric testing. Once their
involuntary talent was discovered, they were hooked up

Theme Of Minority Report
Said to be inspired by the curiosity of our future and impacts our rapid advancement in technology
on future society, the 2002 film minority report, by Steven Spielberg is set in the futuristic setting of
America in 2054. The film has a theme of free vs determinism and can be seen thought out the film.
A world without murder "Utopia" and a system called pre–crime is able to stop murder from
happening by seeing it before the event takes place. John Anderton a father of one is a leader of the
system, Anderton runs away because he sees himself commit a murder and finds out a different side
to the pre crime and his boss Lamar Burgess. Throughout, the film he was given multiple choice to

Is distorted and futuristic which allows him to explore numerous themes such as free will and
determinism. Through this corrupted setting Spielberg highlights that you can change your fate from
free will, which is spiritual freedom. From the ending scene, a pan shot shows the view of
Washington D.C. which allows Anderton so be put into place, proving a setting and introductory for
a character to be put into frame. Anderton finds out that it was Lamar Burgess who planned his
murder and begins to confront him. Anderton already knows the outcomes. Anderton tells Burgess
that he still has a choice but Lamar, replied with "yes, I have a choice and I made it". A gunshot and
smoke towards Anderton appears, along with a shocked faced from Anderton. Indicating that he was
shot but Lamar chose to kill him–self. A tilt shot with a high angle along with a zoom out allows the
pre crime to come into frame and showing Lamar's dead body on a rooftop, providing the audience
with a plot twist, climax and showing that Burgess who was once corrupt and powerful was now
resting in peace. Anderton changed his fate by killing him–self. Spielberg uses setting to introduce

Tom Cruise Pre Crime
In the movie that stars Tom Cruise as the head detective for the pre–crime unit there are several
intriguing ideas going on. John Anderson who is played by Tome Cruise gets his information from
what is known as the pre–cogs who are a group of two males and one female. These pre–cogs are
able to see into the future when a murder is going to take place. These three people are floating in a
liquid unable to move to leave. They stay lying there all day and night just to serve the purpose of
warning the pre–crime police of danger that is suppose to come. Which sets up our first dilemma
that takes place during this movie.
These three people or pre–cogs because in the movie they are not really thought as being human
beings are really imprisoned. They don't have the ability to leave or go home; instead they are forced
into drugs that keep them somewhat conscious but not too much as to know of their surroundings.
They were being used really for someone else's gain, which turned out in the end not to be the pre–

138). In this movie however, the pre–crime police task force violates that right. They instead choose
to believe in the belief that we are predestined in the case of committing murder. They fail to believe
that people can choose the path that they take in life and whether or not they want to commit a
certain act whatever it shall be. A person has free will and with that power they have the ability to
decide to murder someone or not. The movie shows that at the end we do in fact have a choice to
whether or not we murder someone. Hence, the rationale behind arresting people who have yet to
commit a crime should be illegal and unethical. You are stripping that person of his or her rights and
reaching the belief that humans have no sense of free

Minority Report Ethical Issues
Minority Report
Minority Report, the most contemporary of the movies that we have analyzed, is set in a future
dystopian Washington D.C. where law is able to be predicted and everyone's eyes are linked to the
same system that allows to government to monitor you. The film depicts a few areas of law
differently than anything we have studied so far. The first is the monetization of law which leads
into the second, which is the questioning of the morality of certain types of law
Monetizing law. The third is that the main character, John Anderton, is involved in a fugitive type of
law for most of the movie. The monetization of law in this film is the first ethical question brought
up. Even though it is not out current reality (or at least not ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

We have seen the lawyer, the jury, the vigilante, the detective, the fixer, but we have not seen a
fugitive trying to use law to clear his own name yet. Anderton rolls the detective, vigilante, and
fugitive character all into one as he tries to prove that the precogs visions about him were wrong. He
actively breaks the law in an effort to clear his name and avoid the worse of two legal issues.
Though, in the jetpack scene where he is running away from the people who work at the precrime
division, he actually seems to kill a good amount of people by accident, which seems like grounds
for arrest anyway – but that is beside the

Film Analysis: The Minority Report Essay
The Minority Report is a film that tries to stop crimes before they happen, with the enlistment of 3
teen pre–cogs. These pre–cogs predict future murders and the authorities swoop in and arrest the
would–be murders, before they have the chance of committing the crime. Even thing goes great
until Anderton, a cop played by Tom Cruise, is suspected. Written by Philip K. Dick and then turned
to film by Steven Spielberg in 2002, the short story to film became a success. Though there are
many differences between the book and the movie, one would think Steven Spielberg would not be
able to grab audience's attention, but with his skills, Spielberg went above and beyond all measures.

This was a vision that was never told to be wrong, and for that every individual that came up as a
suspect was bound to do exactly what the pre–cogs predicted in the exact order and time. Pre crime
was made to keep out crime and those who attempted to commit it, but that all changes when John
Anderton finds himself a suspect. There is much to point out within the difference of the book and
the movie. They were made in two different time frames by two different people, and made with a
traditional but radical transition. Like any other, the book is supposed to seem more detailed and
convincing, but in this case I vote for the movie by Steven Spielberg. The film on The Minority
Report comes to life in a modernized and technical way rather that the book, just old John and
deformed idiots called pre–cogs. Furthermore, to read the book and see the film, much is told
differently, but they work with the same plot, and that is the reason that the transition is successful.
Very different from the film, the book told it much differently as if they were speaking about aliens.
"The three gibbering, fumbling creatures, with their enlarged heads and wasted bodies, were
contemplating the future. The analytical machinery carefully listened." (121, Harrison). This
particular scene is when Anderton and Witwer realized that the three creatures they had been
referring to as idiots, were actually geniuses because of their ability to predict the future. The pre–

comparison between the movies 'Minority report' and 'The Martian' demonstrates how both movies
differ and what makes it significant on its own. Minority report is a movie that is based on the year
2054. It is mainly about a special unit of the police department called Precrime. Precrime is a
department that arrests murderers before they can commit the actual crime. The heart and brain of
precrime was based on the visions of the three precogs who were used to stop murder before it

was whether the future is accurate or whether free will could alter the future. "We don't choose the
things we believe in; they choose us"(Minority report, Burgess). This free will does exist because
when the murderers control their actions then, the precogs' visions are but the facts that occurred
from their choice of action. John tried to change his destiny but since there was no minority report

his choice of action. The only similarity that can be found in their fate and destiny was that they

Analysis Of Minority Report
The 2002 film, Minority Report, seems to contain the aspects of a Kantian approach, but when
analysing the movie in further detail, does it hold its place? The Pre–crime program punishes
individuals for having the intent to murder another, even when the action does not take place. Kant
elaborates his standards pertaining ethics in Groundwork for the Metaphysics of Morals, where Pre–
crime can be further understood. Minority Report takes place in the year 2054, crime is virtually
eradicated from Washington D.C. due to the Precrime crew. The program uses three gifted humans,
known as Pre–Cogs, to see in the future and predict crimes beforehand. John Anderton, the head of
Precrime, believes that the system is flawless, however, the Pre–Cogs ... Show more content on

Kant's first proposition is an action has moral worth only if it is done out of duty, such as when
someone who has absolutely no interest in donating to the poor does so out of duty. His second
proposition is that action has moral worth not because of its aim, but because of the maxim on
which it is based, meaning that it would not matter if the intent failed, as long as the principle was
good. His third proposition is that duty is the necessity of an action from respect for the law, such as
if an individual is in an embarassing spot, they could will the lie, but not will the maxim to lie. Kant
argues that everything is secretly done in self benefit, an example can be an individual helping
another merely for the fulfilled feeling. Comparing Kantian aspects to Minority Report can be done
with ease. Kant's second proposition, that an action has moral worth because of its maxim, can be
further understood in the Pre–crime stance. The Pre–crime organization is in place in order to stop
murders. Individuals, such as Anderton, are sought out to be arrested before they even comprehend
the crime. However, Kant would argue that the arrest is valid due to the fact that they are capable of
such an intention, even if the act was not committed. Emotions are something people tend to little to
no control on, which leads to crime of passion, or the red balls, being produced. These

In this paper I will be reviewing the movie Minority Report directed by Steven Spielberg released in
2002. In the entire review of this film, I will be discussing some specific aspects such as few scenes
from the movie, some technical aspects and the intended audience of the film. In addition I will add
my own opinion to all the aspects throughout this paper. Finally I will round off my review by
concluding why this film is worth of watching both for personal entertainment and academic
purpose.
In this film Tom Cruise plays the role of protagonist as Chief John Anderton. The role of antagonist
is played by Max von Sydow as Director Lamar and Colin Farrell as Danny Witwer. Besides, one of
the vital roles is played by Samantha Morton as Agatha. This movie takes place during the year of
2054 in Washington, D.C. Tom Cruise as John Anderton is an officer working for an organization
called Pre–Crime. In Pre–Crime there are three twins called as Precog who have the ability to
visualize murder in the near future. In the Pre–Crime there is a red ball which shows the name of the
future murderer when the Precogs predict any murder. The task of John Anderton and his squad is to
stop these murders before happening and there has not been a single murder in last six years. The
main twist of the plot occurs when the Precog premeditates that John Anderton himself will be a
murderer. John Anderton has no clue about the person he is going to murder and he flees away not to

it, but you cannot change the future.
In the movie "Minority Report," Chief Anderton is trying to eliminate murder by arresting criminals
before they commit the crime. He does this through three people called the precogs. They can see

The fact that the city is state–of–the–art and high–tech does not help Anderton in his escape. Every
step he takes is monitored, and eyes record movement. In one scene, Anderton gets on board a train,
and looks up to a machine (an eye–dent scanner), which scans his eyes and identifies him. This is
when he realises that he will not be safe in his own city. He decides to take drastic action – he
decides that he will go and get his eyes changed.
Sight is a main theme for the film. Anderton cannot escape the Precrime unit with his own eyes,
everywhere he goes he will be identified, so he has to somehow get new eyes. He goes to a man who
replaces his eyes with someone else's and Anderton is now slightly safer. He is informed that he
cannot remove the bandages that are covering his new eyes for twenty–four hours, which poses a
problem when the flat that he is staying in to recover is invaded by spyders (Small mechanical
critters that work in the same way as the machine on the train.). These creatures are relentless and
seek heat. So, Anderton tries to lower his body temperature by filling a bathtub with water and ice,
and he climbs into it. The spyders eventually find him, and they pull at his bandages, and scan his
eyes. He is not identified as Jon Anderton and so the spyders leave.

Minority Report Ethical Issues
Minority Report is set in the year 2054 where a private company have supposedly solved the
problem of murder in Washington DC. The chosen theme that will be explored in this analytical
essay is ethics in the movie and mainly about the ethics of the pre–cogs. There is an ethical theme in
this film because the pre–cogs are constantly drugged to the point where they can only see future
murders and not the reality that surrounds them. How is it ethical to keep people basically
unconscious against their will? The people who set up the pre–crime are using the principle of
utilitarianism; the sacrifice of a few to benefit many to justify using the pre–cogs.

They are used to identify people as well are giving personal advertising to each individual. Spielberg
is trying to convey the audience about ethical issues to do with privacy. Eyes are a symbol of
identity, and with them, there is no privacy. Early on in the movie, John Anderton is told by a drug
dealer without eyes that "in the land of the blind, the one–eyed man is king" with blind being a
relation to the law enforcement being blinded by their own reliance on the pre–cogs. Also when
John gets his eyes removed, he is waking up from his beliefs in the pre–crime system and realising
that there are flaws to it. When John drops one of his eyes down the drain, there is reference to him
being the "one–eyed man who is king". Spielberg is showing that not just you, but everyone is being

you are able to be tracked. The only way you can truly hide in this city is by exchanging your eyes

Minority Report Criminological Theories
Title of Essay
The film Minority Report directed by Steven Spielberg (2002) is a soft sci–fi film for sci–fi
enthusiast that aims to provide insight into a near–future where the police of Washington D.C can
prevent crime before it occurs while following John Anderton's journey to unveil the truths of the
Precog system. However, based on emphasis the film places on the Eye scanner ability to locate and
tag criminals, the eye scanner reveals a criminological analysis that certain applications of theories
lead to further criminal behavior suggesting that all theories have flaws. The eye scanners are
heavily influenced by biological positivism theory because of their design to scan the eye to
determine whether a person is a criminal however by using this tagging method it provides evidence
that reinforces labeling theory's view that being identified as criminal leads to criminal behavior.By
looking at train scene in which the eye scanner plays a significant role in identifying John, in which
that results in him escaping and getting an illegal eye surgery it, therefore, reinforce the idea that
categorizing criminals based on physical characteristic end in the individual falling for the label

Minority Report is a 2002 science fiction film directed by renowned director Steven Spielberg and is
set in the year 2054 in Washington, D. C. The film revolves around an elite law enforcing squad;
Precrime. The Precrime Division uses three genetically altered humans called Pre–Cogs whom
possesses special powers to see into the future and predict crimes beforehand. After each crime is
foreseen and analyzed, Precrime police officers are sent to the crime location to apprehend the
future murderers and place them under arrest. The future murderers are then put into a sleep state

Before he was haloed, Anderton managed piece back the puzzle and finally knew who set him up
and as of why he was targeted. The reason was because he knew about Anne Lively who is Agatha's
mother. Anne Lively, a former drug addict when she had Agatha, came back wanting her child back,
and Burgess had to kill her in order to keep Precrime viable since Agatha is the strongest among all
three Pre–Cogs. Burgess had then set up Anderton to cover up Anderton's knowledge about Anne
Lively's murder. Lara, Anderton's wife felt suspicious with Lamar so she visited Anderton and got
him out of his sleep. During the celebratory dinner for the Precrime program, Anderton calls
Burgess and confronts him while the Pre–Cog's footage of Lively's death is played for the guests.
During the moment when Burgess was searching for Anderton, the Pre–Cogs predetermined that
Burgess was going to shoot and kill Anderton. As Burgess finds and draws a gun on Anderton,
Anderton notes to Burgess the dilemma that he is in: either he can shoot and kill Anderton, therefore
signifying that Precrime is a well established and flawless division however by doing so he will
become a murderer himself, on the other hand he can spare Anderton's life, thus showing that
Precrime is nothing but a failure. All the hard work that they had all put in will go down the drain in

Stephen Spielberg's Minority Report, based off Phillip K. Dick's short story, takes place in the year
2054 and centers around a crime prevention program pilot–tested in Washington, D.C. by the "pre–
crime division" of the police force. With crime rates down 90%, the prevention program has proven
to be extremely successful; however, in a world of pre–punishment the question remains: is it
possible to treat someone in a certain way because of what they may do in the future, even if it
hasn't occurred yet?
This film begins with three mutant "pre–cogs" with the ability to predict the mindset and actions of
future murderers with 99% accuracy. Occasionally, however, the pre–cogs do not all predict the

This investigation is spearheaded by Danny Witwer (Colin Farrell) who realizes that this
deterministic approach to crime, negating the offenders free will in the process of committing a
crime, is not necessarily engraved in stone. The head of the Pre–Crime department, John Anderton
(Tom Cruise), rolls a ball off a desk which is caught by Witwer before it can fall onto the ground.
Anderton asks Witwer why he caught the ball, to which he responds, "Because it would have fallen
off the desk." Anderton retorts that by Witwers logic, there is not definitive proof that the ball would
have indeed rolled off the table despite Witwers prediction. Nevertheless, he asserts that such is the
case of the Pre–Crime system which knows "beyond reasonable doubt" that the would–be criminals
would become criminals. Consequentially, the central concern surrounding the plot is that of "pre–
punishment" in which would–be criminals are pre–punished for crimes which they have yet to

dedicated to interpreting these visions and catching the future criminals before they commit these
foreseen crimes. Commissioner John A. Anderton was the creator of this institution called Precrime
in New York City and has a strong pride in his work. Everything had seemed to be a success, there
had not been a murder for five years, but it all starts to fall apart when the precogs have a vision of
Anderton committing a murder of a man he has never met before, named Leopold Kaplan. The
commissioner believes he has been set up by a young man, Ed Witwer, who will be taking
Anderton's place when he ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The precogs are not mutant humans, but are praised as wonderful beings. John Anderton was not the
creator of Precrime, Director Lamar Burgess and Iris Hineman were the "mother and father" of
Precrime. Anderton's pride in Precrime came from a previous experience he had with the kidnapping
of his only child. His wife, Laura (not Lisa), separated from him and lived near a beach away from
Anderton and Precrime, but in Dick's story they are married and she works at Precrime with John.
Danny Witwer (not Ed) is an FBI investigator, not Anderton's replacement, who enters the film to
discover flaws in the Precrime system, specifically human flaws. The precogs vision of Anderton's
future murder depicts him killing a man he does not know, but the man is Leo Crow, not Leopold
Kaplan. Anderton, in the film, still believes he is being set up and goes on a quest, which is drawn
out more than in the short story containing encounters with new characters and full of dramatic
actions. Anderton kidnaps Agatha (not Donna), the female precog who supposedly holds Anderton's
minority report. He discovers, as he does in the short story, that he does not have one, but his
curiosity gets the best of him and he continues to find who he is supposed to kill. Eventually, he
ends up at the place in the foreseen crime and finds pictures of his kidnapped son with a strange
man. Thinking this Leo Crow is responsible for the disappearance of Sean, Anderton decides he is
going to kill him.

Minority Report Notes:
The movie is set in the year 2054, with the main character played by none other Tom Cruise known
as John Anderton in the movie. The whole premise of the movie is the fact that the police force John
is involved with has the ability to predict that someone is about to commit a crime. They do this
through three precogs or mutated humans who are able to see through the future. The only caveat to
the precogs is that they only reveal clues to reveal the location or person related to such crime. After
finding and gathering a few clues, John determines a area where he finds Howard. Howard finds out
that his wife is cheating on him, and plans on killing his wife and the alleged new man in her life.

Minority Report Dystopian Society
The film "Minority Report" depicts a society in the near future where an organization implements
pre–crime, which is meant to stop murders before they occur. The film depicts a dystopian society
by exaggerating world events and using the common elements of a dystopia. The common story
elements shared by most dystopian works are present in the film. In a dystopian society the people
are often controlled by a strict government, but in this case it is a corporation that closely watches
over the people in order to find crimes that are going to happen and prevent them. Like many
dystopian societies there is propaganda promoting the benefits of the new organization pre– crime.

Imagine a world in which the thought of murder is a thing of the past; a world that has successfully
abolished the system of jails and fines with the aid of gifted individuals that can predict the future
(Dick 72). Such a crime free world exists in Philip K. Dick's famous short story, The Minority
Report. Using the adaptation made by screenwriters, Scott Frank and Jon Cohen, DreamWorks was
able to release the film version of Dick's short story in 2002. Furthermore, this futuristic age film
was directed by the famous director, Stephen Spielberg. The main focus of the short story and film

His wife, Lisa, and Ed Witwer, the young man brought in to replace him when he retires, are two of
the main individuals he suspects as his conspirators. Furthermore, unknowing to Anderton, his so–
called victim and the one behind the conspiracy, Kaplan, sends one of his men, Tod Fleming, to help
Anderton escape his predicament. This was Kaplan's way to bring Anderton and his Precrime unit
under the Army's control. In his quest to find the minority report, the document that is to prove his
innocence and clear his name, he discovers the truth about his true "friends" and "enemies". This
discovery also enables him to prevent the army from obtaining control of domestic policing in the
nation (Landrith). The story concludes after Anderton fulfills the prediction made by the precogs and
kills Kaplan, he is then punished for his crime by being sent into exile to a far away region in the
galaxy.
Who is John Anderton? In the Philip K. Dick's short story he is the founder and commissioner of the
policing unit, Precrime. He is described as "bald, fat and old", and is in his mid–fifties. One of the
successes of the adaptation of the character of Anderton onto the big screen is that the movie
portrays Anderton as a younger and more active man than in the short story. Appealing to the mass

Minority Report
What's the best way to lower the homicide rate? By stopping homicides before they happen? At least
that's what the precrime police thought. Neuroin, a new drug introduced into society causes major
birth defects in children of moms that use it. Many did not survive, but three were saved. They had
an unwanted gift though. They could successfully predict future homicides by visions they receive.
These children, called precognitives or precogs, help the department of precrime to completely stop
murders in Washington D.C. for 6 years. The system was thought to be perfect, until a prevision was

seem much safer, and more convenient. Minimal crashes will occur, and a person could do other
things instead of driving, say finishing a reaction paper... Although the precrime was a good idea, it
proved to be unreliable and manipulatable, the precrime police did decide to take it down in the end,
returning to more reasonable methods of fighting crime. With good always comes bad. I mean, how
would we define what is good without the evil? With the updated technologies came things like new,

Minority Report
How does the filmmaker use cinematic techniques and narrative elements to explore their message
about a theme in Minority Report?
The government's interest in citizen privacy and freedom through technology in Steven Spielberg's
Minority Report, while allegedly for "protection", is more so for political gain. While the
introduction of Pre–Crime appears to have genuine intentions, the reality is that it has been founded
upon inhumane manipulation of precogs and their families. The lack of privacy and freedom across
civilians is depicted cinematic techniques, such as the construction of a monotonous environment as
suggested through the lack of colour. Additionally, the use of foreshadowing and characterisation
narrative elements ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
While "Big Data" has shown to be useful for public services, Spielberg's construction shows how
this ultimately comes at the cost of privacy. Citizens of the District of Columbia in 2054 give up
their privacy for advertisement revenue alongside so–called protection through the pre–crime
program, offering to prevent the occurrence of murder by compromising their privacy through
excessive surveillance. "Big data", a term coined to describe complex data such as photos or online
activity has been spoken of as a devil by the media in the recent age of technology. The tracking and
identifying of consumer habits in Minority Report remains one of many exemplified speculative
"Big data" aspects that have realised since the publication of the film. The store assistant which not
only knows the customer's name and types of products they purchase, can be seen all over the
internet, personalised advertising appearing as soon as a consumer has typed a search into Google.
When a company has this information, so do Governing Agencies. While not directly addressed in

Steven Spielberg's Interpretation of Philip K. Dicks's Minority Report
In the year 2054 crime has become a thing of the past. The relatively new Pre–Crime system allows
the government to operate an elite police force, which with the help of three very talented and
unique human beings can see into the future and prevent countless crimes, especially murders before
they happen. In Philip K. Dicks's short story, The Minority Report, the world we live in is nearly
infallible. With the reduction of violent criminal acts, people can live their lives in peace and
prosperity without the fear of the pain and suffering, which usually accompanies violence. Likewise,

In both instances, as the story approaches an end point, Anderton realizes that his original vision of
the predicament facing him was faulty. The shock and amazement that the individuals who Anderton
though were behind an apparent plot to seize his job by framing him for murder, were in fact simply
doing their jobs by pursuing him, leads the main character to uncover a plan where other previously
benign forces were at play manipulating the situation at hand for their own personal gains. In the
final moments of both narrations of the story, the somewhat ironic endings for those involved lead to
the proclamation of Anderton's innocence and the punishment of those really attempting to
manipulate the Pre–Crime system for their own use.
Although both Dick's and Spielberg's versions of The Minority Report were alike in many general
ways, Spielberg's later interpretation of Dick's short story did deviate somewhat for its original
context. Whereas Dick's version of the narrative pitted John Anderton, the director of Pre–Crime
against other corrupt elements of the government, Spielberg's version, had Anderton struggle with
internal elements within his own organization which were trying to assure a safe future for the Pre–
Crime system. Furthermore, in Dick's story Anderton was actually being framed by an Army
General, Kaplan, in an effort to prove that Pre–Crime was faulty, which would

The Juxtaposition of Ambition and Obsession
"Obsession is the single most wasteful human activity, because with an obsession you keep coming
back and back and back to the same question and never get an answer," (Norman Mailer), reveals a
prominent theme of seeking satisfaction, but never reaching the point of enlightenment, which is
seen throughout Minority Report. Minority Report, a film directed by Steven Spielberg and written
by Scott Frank, takes place in the year 2054, in Washington D.C., where murder is prevented by the
police and John Anderton is the head of this establishment, called the Precrime Unit. Everything
seems to be going over smoothly until Anderton is accused of the future murder of a man he has yet

Stereotypes In Minority Report
Minority Report is an oddly misplaced mystery/action movie about a cop who is accused of a future
murder. Set in early 21st century Washington, DC, the police have the ability to stop murders before
they happen with the help of three psychics. They use technology to enhance the visions of these
psychics, referred to as pre–cognitives (or "pre–cogs") to generate not only the name of the victim
and perpetrator, but also the evidence against them: hence the crime of murder is reduced to a black
and white picture. Anytime the Pre–cogs' visions are in conflict a Minority Report is generated, yet
it is also destroyed except for what the pre–cog who predicted it remembers deep within their mind.
John Anderton is the Chief–of–Police of PreCrime, a department of the police that deals with
murder and uses pre–cogs. His son was kidnapped, driving him to PreCrime, and preventing further
loss of innocent life. His faith in the system is rooted his loss, and up to his accusation, unfaltering.

and perpetrators. This leads him to question the system, which eventually leads those in charge to

one's freedom of choice. It is often said that stories change significantly when becoming movies.
The movie by the same name Minority Report directed by Steven Spielberg is based off the same
ideas and concept the unpredictability of life and choices. It is a prime example of how the short
story and movie differ even if the basic concepts remain unchanged. The movie and short story

In today's society, we continually live in fear that something catastrophic is waiting right around the

a plethora of movies showing a dystopian world. Popular movies like The Hunger Games bring
viewers into a world where two people every year must fight to death to show their superiority and

play on this fear though. I Am Legend, Minority Report, and Invasion of the Body Snatchers are
movies specifically created to bring fear and discontentment to the human mind by feeding the fear
of the unknown. The 2007 movie I Am Legend is the story of a man named Robert Neville who was

Neo-Marxist Filmmakers
Neo–Marxist filmmakers were greatly influenced by Althusser's theory of ideology, which viewed
film as an ideological apparatus that tried to determine how films turn viewers into their subject, and
encourage them to believe not only in the represented reality, but also in their preferred one, the one
that could not exist without their structuring. For example, the Jean Louis Baudry's article
"Ideological effects of the Basic Cinematographic Apparatus" (1985) says that the making of movies
is a results of the recent capitalism's need to restore in people minds the illusion of having control
over their own lives. The illusion was needed for their willing participation in the new industrial
style of production that actually took away the remains of their self–control. Baudry found
ideological properties in the film apparatus itself that constitute a "transcendental" concentrated
subject, and therefore induce a willingness to cooperate with the capitalist mode of production. An
observer who accepts the position set by a painting, whereby his or hers eye overlays the painting's
point of view, experiences the full illusion of depth. This effect has a strong ideological outcome
since, in ideological terms, the painting arranges the viewer space in a centered and organized form
that appears to originate from the painting. Laura Mulvey, in "Narrative Cinema and Visual
Pleasure" (1973), uses psychoanalysis as a political weapon to uncover ways in which the

It is a fool–proof system born to ensure absolute safety...but when it crumbles, would you go against
everything it stands for just to save it? This is the platform that Philip K. Dick, author of the sci–fi

Police Commissioner John A. Anderton as the founder of a promising new branch of policing:
Precrime, a system that uses "Precogs" (mutated and retarded oracles) to predict all future crimes.

abolish Precrime and re–instate the Army. He is eventually killed when Anderton discovers the plan
and fulfills his "majority" reports and shoots Kaplan, thus condemning himself but saving Precrime.
The basis of Precrime's operation, the three precogs named Jerry, Donna and Mike, are described as
grotesque, inarticulate parodies of human beings, with swollen heads and withered bodies, retarded
both physiologically and mentally. Their physical repulsiveness is demonstrated by Witwer's
reaction to seeing the precogs for the first time: "For the first time Witwer's face [loses] its breezy
confidence. A sick, dismayed expression [creeps] into his eyes, a mixture of shame and moral shock.
'It's not–pleasant,' he [murmurs]. 'I didn't realize they were so–' He [gropes] in his mind for the right
word, gesticulating. 'So–deformed.'"(73). Conversely, in the movie, Anderton can walk with Agatha
through a crowded mall and streets without drawing much attention (precogs are even, in fact,
deified by the police force and the public). Also, in the film, John Anderton is a trim, athletic man in
his 30s or 40s, and Police Chief of Precrime. Out of

Minority Report: Free Will Vs Determinism
Minority Report is a 2002 film directed by Steven Spielberg. One of the film's main themes is free
will vs determinism. Through the plot, characterisation and various film techniques, Spielberg
presents a somewhat contradictory point of view on this age–old debate. Minority Report explores
determinism through a visual image and character dialogue. The act of Anderton throwing a ball
used in the Precog lab, and Witwer catching it conveys to the audience that all actions in the world
are predetermined. The act of the ball falling was already decided, and therefore since Witwer knew
this, he caught the ball. Anderton further reinforces this message by saying, "The fact that you
prevented it from happening doesn't change the fact that it was going to happen" Spielberg
emphasises the importance of this scene by not changing the camera shot when Witwer catches the
ball. His hand seems to come out of nowhere, grabbing the audience's attention. Spielberg also uses
the plot of the film as a representation of determinism. Even though Anderton was able to stop
himself from killing Crow, that did not stop the main detail of the predetermined vision, Crow ...

This is explored in the most detail through the setting. The entire concept of precrime is based on
free will, since throughout the entire movie the police force intervene into supposedly predetermined
murders, and are able to successfully prevent them, and change the future. The only murder that was
not able to be changed was the death of Crow, but even then Anderton was still able to change one
aspect of the event. The setting suggests that in fact the future is not predetermined, that people can
change the future as they please based on what they choose to do in their lives. Since precrime has
become a system, Spielberg is also suggesting that free will is an essential part of our lives, since in
the film murders are prevented by the precrime division all the

bodies all lapping over each other making the audience confused and inquisitive to know what is

after Anderton witnesses himself murdering a stranger in the vision. The viewer can tell from that

more investigation into it, it is because the murder that they first visiones of was suppose to happen
and who the murderer is but it never happened that way or by that person. The second vision shows
the same vision but small details are different but it is the same victim, they do not know who the
actual killer is. Precrime was a benefit for Washington's government but in the end it was the total
opposite. Sci–Fi was also shown in I am

Heroism In 1984
When someone says protagonist, what does one usually think of? Generally, the words 'good guy'
and 'hero' come to mind first, but are those words used correctly? Is the protagonist really a hero? In
George Orwell's 1984 and Philip k. Dick's Minority Report, two different protagonists who commit
'hero–like' acts are shown. These acts on outside seem like they are benefiting the greater good,
when in reality they help almost no one. The side effects of their actions are avoided to make the
protagonists seem more worthy and stronger in the readers eyes, but it does nutmeat that they do not
still exist. At a glance, 1984 is a dystopian about a man named Winston, the protagonist, who lives
in a country called Oceania. It follows him through his ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In 1984 the antagonist is known by the name O'Brien and in The Minority Report his name is
Kaplan. The first instance where Winston's actions intervene with O'Brien's life is when he
unknowingly gives O'Brien more power through the crimes he commits. Winston commits all sorts
of thoughtcrime throughout the book but it is not until the last part where he realizes that O'Brien,
someone who he thought was going to help take Big Brother down, works for The Party. In part
three O'Brien says, "'And there are disease, pain, death –––' O'Brien silenced him by a movement of
the hand." (Orwell 277). This quote tells readers the extent of O'Brien's power, specifically over
Winston. It shows how his hidden figure type persona has evolved into someone who is not afraid to
show who he really is and is willing to evict pain on to other people. All this is due to Winston
rebellious acts against Big Brother. All throughout the story. he breaks many of Big Brother's rules,
reason why O'Brien catches Winston in the first place and has all the power he does right now. In
chapter nine Kaplan says, "'This is a great occasion for the Army... You'll be glad to hear I"m going
to give the public a full account of the spurious change brought against you'" (Dick ???). After
Anderton tries to flee so he is not sent to the joy camps, Kaplan is able to persuade the government
that the whole precrime system and the majority–minority report aspect is a false way of
determining if someone is guilty. He wants the army to be back in control, specifically his team of
sergeants that retired a while back. Anderton trying to run away from the fate that the system writes
for him is the reason why Kaplan gains so much power in the first place. The protagonists actions
affect the antagonists, in the better. In addition to affecting the antagonists for the better, the
protagonists also cause the antagonists

  • 1. Ethical Issues in the 2002 Steven Spielberg Movie Minority... Ethical Issues in The 2002 Steven Spielberg Movie Minority Report Technology is progressing every day. We have come so far in the past ten years. Imagine life in 2054, and what life will be like. That is what Philip K. Dick did in 1956 when he wrote the short story Minority Report, which was later produced as a movie. In the movie Minority Report, a team of officers led by John Anderson (Tom Cruise), work together in the precime division. They collect information given by precogs to find murder suspects and victims before the crime actually happens. Precogs are three humans that were born with a brain disease. This brain disease affected others but these three are the only ones who survived. The disease caused some mutation and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... • 3. Monuments And Masculinity In Roland Emmerich's... Monuments and Masculinity Roland Emmerich's Independence Day (1996) mirrors the ideology of a sci–fi film outlined by Susan Sontag in the Imagination of Disaster so closely that it borders on a lack of creativity. That is what qualifies this film as a 'revival' of the sci–fi genre following revisionist works like Steven Spielberg's E.T. the Extra–Terrestrial (1982). This film, among other things, believes that femininity in leadership will lead to disaster on the political stage and that personal relationships should mirror the ideals of this government balance. This scene uses framing and set design re–erect themes of the traditional sci–fi ideology such as the military embodiment of masculinity and the weak femininity of a 'scientist'. This scene also sets the stage for what Sontag calls the balance of a 'good war' and the 'yearning for peace' which unfolds throughout the film. The ideology of Independence Day is despairingly unoriginal, touching on almost all themes outlined by Sontag as what makes the science fiction genre. Queuing up stage Sontag's third stage of the science fiction film, "In the capital of the country, conferences between scientists and the military take place..."; of course, the difference being these shots are in Area 51. Intertitles clearly define for the viewer where the jet is heading, doing so it is reinforcing the authority they have to travel there. This is an ironic move considering the random assortment of civilians they have on board, and the lack of authority they had not even an hour prior. The set design and misé–en–scene are so blatantly full of military machismo as the president is seen peaking his character metamorphosis between an effeminate man and the strong leader. Slowly, a beyond oversized commercial airliner prop pulls into the base's set absolutely truncating the figures in every frame. The minimalist décor on the base exterior of the base contrasts with the extravagance of the ridiculous jet. The implications of the size of the machine and the machismo of its' passengers, or the size of their genitals, is overbearing. It's one of the many phallic displays of power and masculinity that can be seen throughout the film, but this one obviously aids as a visual ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

"I want God to use me as he sees fit, he knows my heart and I know that he is using me for a greater purpose and I want to make sure I am being honest and speaking my truth, always". Having the lead role in a prime– time sitcom is a huge deal for African American actresses and I wanted to know how Meagan felt this role will influence the younger generations of actresses of color and also commend her on this feat. She is proud that this role can show women that you don't have to portray yourself in "a certain way" that you have other options in roles, and can be seen as the heroin or powerhouse. The impact that she has on young women is a cause that she is avid about. "I am passionate about young women, I want to show them that you can be strong and independent on your own, you don't always need a man. A man is a gift and how to treat them as a gift is important", ultimately showing young women you can stand on your own two feet first and have a man be off added value, not the thing that defines you. • 7. P.K. Dick’s The Minority Report and Steven Spielberg’s... P.K. Dick's The Minority Report and Steven Spielberg's The Minority Report Death can occur in four ways. A person can die from a physical illness, viruses and infections. A person can die from an accident. A person can commit suicide. Finally a person can be murdered by another person. What if murders could be prevented? In P.K. Dick's story The Minority Report, and in Spielberg's film The Minority Report, the future can be altered by using incredible technology. The success of Spielberg's adaptation of Dick's short story to film can be determined by the way each was presented. While giving a tour or precrime to Edward Witwer, the main character John Anderton finds the he is supposed to kill a person he never met Leopold ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The Minority Report by Spielberg is about a one man conspiracy to keep pre crime up and running. In the book by Dick, there is a larger conspiracy to destroy precrime. The final results are opposite as well; in the book precrime was maintained and still operational. In the movie, precrime was shut down and destroyed. The methods of precrime are also different. In the book, there are three precogs which mutter an indecipherable language, which a machine interprets into images of a murder. Then a card comes out of the machine with the name of the killer and name of the victim on it. Spielberg made a more modern method out of this. In the movie, images are taken directly from the three precogs brain and then interpreted by a person who tries to find out the location of the murder. Also there are two wooden balls made, one with the name of the killer and the other with the name of the victim, on them. The movie also goes deeper into the creation of precrime, how crack babies whom had an odd gift/curse of dreaming of murder became used to prevent murder. It also shows why Anderton joined precrime, to make sure no one else would suffer like he did when he lost his son. The precogs in the book and movie are very different. First off their names in the book are Donna, Jerry and Mike. In the movie their names are Agatha, Arthur and Dashiell. The movie also involves the precogs, or at least one of them, more into the story. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 9. Minority Report: From Story to Screen Essay Minority Report: From Story to Screen Adaptations are never carbon copies. A prime example is Philip K. Dick's short story and Steven Spielberg's 2002 film, Minority Report. The structure of the storytelling is indeed different as well as other key elements. The narrative transforms its structure into a more episodic approach when brought to the screen. Words on paper take on a new identity when brought to life on a visual basis. Philip K. Dick's Minority Report, written in 1956, was ahead of its time. The short story explores the consequences of technology and science and how the technology echoes the present state of society. Both the story and the film emphasize the same basic themes, however the actual plot is ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Even the characters have very different traits. John Anderton in the short story is rather old and balding. He seems rather disgruntled and has an immense disliking for Witward. In Spielberg's film, Anderton is played by Tom Cruise who is far from old and balding. Spielberg most likely chose the young A–list actor as opposed to an older one that fits the profile of Dick's Anderton mainly for money's sake. Simply having the name "Tom Cruise" in a movie leads many more people to view the film, even if they do not necessarily know the story line. In the movie, Anderton's motive for joining the pre–crime forces was because his son was kidnapped and murdered. As a result, Anderton finds himself with a drug problem as a means of coping with his depression. In the film, Anderton and his wife are divorced. However, in the beginning of Dick's story, Anderton has suspicion that his wife, Lisa, is behind the plot to set him up. In the film, Anderton is fortuned to kill Leon Crow, whereas in the story he is predetermined to kill a man by the name of Leopold Kaplan. Anderton as a character deviates from story to film. In addition to Anderton, the three psychic beings, dubbed pre–cogs, are exceedingly different in the story and the film. In Dick's rendition, the pre–cogs consist of Mike, Donna, and Jerry. As kids they were noted as having cognitive malfunction and were given psychiatric testing. Once their involuntary talent was discovered, they were hooked up ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

John Anderson who is played by Tome Cruise gets his information from what is known as the pre–cogs who are a group of two males and one female. There is much to point out within the difference of the book and the movie. They were made in two different time frames by two different people, and made with a traditional but radical transition. Like any other, the book is supposed to seem more detailed and convincing, but in this case I vote for the movie by Steven Spielberg. The film on The Minority Report comes to life in a modernized and technical way rather that the book, just old John and deformed idiots called pre–cogs. Furthermore, to read the book and see the film, much is told differently, but they work with the same plot, and that is the reason that the transition is successful. Very different from the film, the book told it much differently as if they were speaking about aliens. "The three gibbering, fumbling creatures, with their enlarged heads and wasted bodies, were contemplating the future. The analytical machinery carefully listened." (121, Harrison). Precrime is a department that arrests murderers before they can commit the actual crime. • 21. Analysis Of Minority Report The 2002 film, Minority Report, seems to contain the aspects of a Kantian approach, but when analysing the movie in further detail, does it hold its place? The Pre–crime program punishes individuals for having the intent to murder another, even when the action does not take place. Kant elaborates his standards pertaining ethics in Groundwork for the Metaphysics of Morals, where Pre– crime can be further understood. Minority Report takes place in the year 2054, crime is virtually eradicated from Washington D.C. due to the Precrime crew. Kant's first proposition is an action has moral worth only if it is done out of duty, such as when someone who has absolutely no interest in donating to the poor does so out of duty. His second proposition is that action has moral worth not because of its aim, but because of the maxim on which it is based, meaning that it would not matter if the intent failed, as long as the principle was good. His third proposition is that duty is the necessity of an action from respect for the law, such as if an individual is in an embarassing spot, they could will the lie, but not will the maxim to lie. Kant argues that everything is secretly done in self benefit, an example can be an individual helping another merely for the fulfilled feeling. Comparing Kantian aspects to Minority Report can be done with ease. Kant's second proposition, that an action has moral worth because of its maxim, can be further understood in the Pre–crime stance. The Pre–crime organization is in place in order to stop murders. Individuals, such as Anderton, are sought out to be arrested before they even comprehend the crime. However, Kant would argue that the arrest is valid due to the fact that they are capable of such an intention, even if the act was not committed. Emotions are something people tend to little to no control on, which leads to crime of passion, or the red balls, being produced. These ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

In the entire review of this film, I will be discussing some specific aspects such as few scenes from the movie, some technical aspects and the intended audience of the film. In addition I will add my own opinion to all the aspects throughout this paper. Finally I will round off my review by concluding why this film is worth of watching both for personal entertainment and academic purpose. When a company has this information, so do Governing Agencies. While not directly addressed in Minority Report, it is questionable as to how these agencies manage such information. The relatively new Pre–Crime system allows the government to operate an elite police force, which with the help of three very talented and unique human beings can see into the future and prevent countless crimes, especially murders before they happen. In Philip K. Dicks's short story, The Minority Report, the world we live in is nearly infallible. With the reduction of violent criminal acts, people can live their lives in peace and prosperity without the fear of the pain and suffering, which usually accompanies violence. Likewise, in director Steven Spielberg's 2002 movie re–creation of Dick's ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In both instances, as the story approaches an end point, Anderton realizes that his original vision of the predicament facing him was faulty. The shock and amazement that the individuals who Anderton though were behind an apparent plot to seize his job by framing him for murder, were in fact simply doing their jobs by pursuing him, leads the main character to uncover a plan where other previously benign forces were at play manipulating the situation at hand for their own personal gains. In the final moments of both narrations of the story, the somewhat ironic endings for those involved lead to the proclamation of Anderton's innocence and the punishment of those really attempting to manipulate the Pre–Crime system for their own use. Although both Dick's and Spielberg's versions of The Minority Report were alike in many general ways, Spielberg's later interpretation of Dick's short story did deviate somewhat for its original context. Whereas Dick's version of the narrative pitted John Anderton, the director of Pre–Crime against other corrupt elements of the government, Spielberg's version, had Anderton struggle with internal elements within his own organization which were trying to assure a safe future for the Pre– Crime system. Furthermore, in Dick's story Anderton was actually being framed by an Army General, Kaplan, in an effort to prove that Pre–Crime was faulty, which would ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Minority Report: The Juxtaposition Of Ambition The Juxtaposition of Ambition and Obsession "Obsession is the single most wasteful human activity, because with an obsession you keep coming back and back and back to the same question and never get an answer," (Norman Mailer), reveals a prominent theme of seeking satisfaction, but never reaching the point of enlightenment, which is seen throughout Minority Report. Minority Report, a film directed by Steven Spielberg and written by Scott Frank, takes place in the year 2054, in Washington D.C., where murder is prevented by the police and John Anderton is the head of this establishment, called the Precrime Unit. Everything seems to be going over smoothly until Anderton is accused of the future murder of a man he has yet to meet. • 53. Stereotypes In Minority Report Minority Report is an oddly misplaced mystery/action movie about a cop who is accused of a future murder. Set in early 21st century Washington, DC, the police have the ability to stop murders before they happen with the help of three psychics. They use technology to enhance the visions of these psychics, referred to as pre–cognitives (or "pre–cogs") to generate not only the name of the victim and perpetrator, but also the evidence against them: hence the crime of murder is reduced to a black and white picture. Anytime the Pre–cogs' visions are in conflict a Minority Report is generated, yet it is also destroyed except for what the pre–cog who predicted it remembers deep within their mind. John Anderton is the Chief–of–Police of PreCrime, a department of the police that deals with murder and uses pre–cogs. His son was kidnapped, driving him to PreCrime, and preventing further loss of innocent life. His faith in the system is rooted his loss, and up to his accusation, unfaltering. His faith begins to falter when he discovers that there is missing data regarding some of the victims and perpetrators. This leads him to question the system, which eventually leads those in charge to arrange for his arrest for the future murder of Jim Crow. Convinced of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... It is often said that stories change significantly when becoming movies. It is a prime example of how the short story and movie differ even if the basic concepts remain unchanged. The movie and short story share many similarities. The genre of science fiction has made that fear even more prominent in today's society with a plethora of movies showing a dystopian world. Hunger Games isn't the first movie to play on this fear though. I Am Legend, Minority Report, and Invasion of the Body Snatchers are movies specifically created to bring fear and discontentment to the human mind by feeding the fear of the unknown. • 59. Neo-Marxist Filmmakers Neo–Marxist filmmakers were greatly influenced by Althusser's theory of ideology, which viewed film as an ideological apparatus that tried to determine how films turn viewers into their subject, and encourage them to believe not only in the represented reality, but also in their preferred one, the one that could not exist without their structuring. For example, the Jean Louis Baudry's article "Ideological effects of the Basic Cinematographic Apparatus" (1985) says that the making of movies is a results of the recent capitalism's need to restore in people minds the illusion of having control over their own lives. The illusion was needed for their willing participation in the new industrial style of production that actually took away the remains of their self–control. Baudry found ideological properties in the film apparatus itself that constitute a "transcendental" concentrated subject, and therefore induce a willingness to cooperate with the capitalist mode of production. An observer who accepts the position set by a painting, whereby his or hers eye overlays the painting's point of view, experiences the full illusion of depth. This effect has a strong ideological outcome since, in ideological terms, the painting arranges the viewer space in a centered and organized form that appears to originate from the painting. • 61. Essay on Minority Report: The Book vs the Movie It is a fool–proof system born to ensure absolute safety...but when it crumbles, would you go against everything it stands for just to save it? This is the platform that Philip K. Dick, author of the sci–fi short story "The Minority Report" (MR), has given us. Set in a futuristic New York City, we see Police Commissioner John A. Anderton as the founder of a promising new branch of policing: Precrime, a system that uses "Precogs" (mutated and retarded oracles) to predict all future crimes. However, the system appears to backfire when Anderton himself is accused to kill a man he's never even heard of. Kaplan is the retired "General of the Army of the Federated Westbloc Alliance" (79), aiming to abolish Precrime and re–instate the Army. He is eventually killed when Anderton discovers the plan and fulfills his "majority" reports and shoots Kaplan, thus condemning himself but saving Precrime. The basis of Precrime's operation, the three precogs named Jerry, Donna and Mike, are described as grotesque, inarticulate parodies of human beings, with swollen heads and withered bodies, retarded both physiologically and mentally. Their physical repulsiveness is demonstrated by Witwer's reaction to seeing the precogs for the first time: "For the first time Witwer's face [loses] its breezy confidence. A sick, dismayed expression [creeps] into his eyes, a mixture of shame and moral shock. 'It's not–pleasant,' he [murmurs]. 'I didn't realize they were so–' He [gropes] in his mind for the right word, gesticulating. 'So–deformed.'"(73). Conversely, in the movie, Anderton can walk with Agatha through a crowded mall and streets without drawing much attention (precogs are even, in fact, deified by the police force and the public). • 63. Minority Report: Free Will Vs Determinism Minority Report is a 2002 film directed by Steven Spielberg. One of the film's main themes is free will vs determinism. Through the plot, characterisation and various film techniques, Spielberg presents a somewhat contradictory point of view on this age–old debate. Minority Report explores determinism through a visual image and character dialogue. The act of Anderton throwing a ball used in the Precog lab, and Witwer catching it conveys to the audience that all actions in the world are predetermined. The act of the ball falling was already decided, and therefore since Witwer knew this, he caught the ball. Anderton further reinforces this message by saying, "The fact that you prevented it from happening doesn't change the fact that it was going to happen" Spielberg emphasises the importance of this scene by not changing the camera shot when Witwer catches the ball. His hand seems to come out of nowhere, grabbing the audience's attention. Spielberg also uses the plot of the film as a representation of determinism. The setting suggests that in fact the future is not predetermined, that people can change the future as they please based on what they choose to do in their lives. Since precrime has become a system, Spielberg is also suggesting that free will is an essential part of our lives, since in the film murders are prevented by the precrime division all the ... At the very start is some good editing where there are pictures on top of pictures with a kissing scene and scissors all intertwined as one. I feel that it is good because you get an insight of what is happening, but the audience has no real idea what is going on. It is only until you see this screen that Tom Cruise is working on that you can see what is happening. There is also a lot of cutting in this film from what Tom Cruise is seeing and what is happening in 'real' time. All this is due to Winston rebellious acts against Big Brother.
