Communication And Identity
Journal #2: Communication and Identity: Creating and Presenting the Self
Self concept is the idea you have of yourself that is pretty solid and fairly unchanging over time, I
thought this term was interesting because obviously everyone has a self concept but I thought it was
unique how people don't want to change their self concept even if the new perception would be
better than the old one. Later on in the chapter it discusses the perceived self which mirrors the self
concept, it is our belief about ourself when we are perfectly honest with ourselves, we don't usually
share this self with others because this is our deepest and most private perception of who we are, not
the person we show the world.
Self esteem is the assessment of our worth ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
One example is one time I just knew I would do a terrible job on an essay that I didn't like the
subject matter, so I said "I can't write" and slacked off on the paper and only recieved a barely
passing grade, this is a prime example of a self–fulfilling prophecy and has happened to me more
times than I care to admit. I think that when we believe we will do really well on something we
work harder, here is a real life example: "I know I can make 90%, but wouldn't it be cool if I could
make 95%?!" often when I believe I can do well I want it to be perfection but when I believe I
cannot do a good job I barely even try and that gets me in trouble. However there is another type of
self–fulfilling prophecy, that is the kind that others make about you, I have found this to be very
influential as well, one time a humanities professor told me I would probably only make at best a C
in his class and I immediately dropped his class. Looking back I wonder if I should have stuck
around and proved him wrong but in the long run I am thankful I didn't because not only was I not
interested in being taught by someone that didn't believe I could do great things but also after
reading about self fulfilling prophecy I don't think that I would have done well in that class at all
because of the psychological effect of his doubt. I have had many wonderful professors that not only
believed in me but helped me and I have done well in their classes. What others believe about us can
unfortunately make a big difference in our

3.1 Teacher Expectancy Effect: Case Studies, Implications,...
3.1 Teacher Expectancy Effect
When we discuss about the interactionist (or symbolic interactionist) view in the context of
educational institutions, teacher expectancy effect would be one of the major areas affecting the
growth and improvement of students both in academically and in extra–curricular, mentally and
physically. In other words, teacher expectancy effect is something that ties closely to the social
development of the students as a whole. Teacher expectancy effect is defined as "the impact that a
teacher's expectations about a student's performance may have on the student's actual achievements"
(Schaefer & Lamm, 1995, p. 461). However, before we look at what teacher expectancy effect
really is, it is crucial for us to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Note that these classifications ("better", "average" and "weakest") were all defined solely by the
teacher according to her impressionistic perception, with nothing whatsoever like a placement test.
This categorization was also found to be based on the social classes of the students, whereby the
"better" ones belong to a higher social class and the "weakest" one from lower social classes
(Covington, 1992, p.140). Other researchers have also been carried out since then and the
expectancy effect seems to thrive in all context of social life be it with university scholar at higher
educational institutions or working adults at manufacturing company. This phenomenon has also
been later coined as the "Pygmalion phenomenon" (Rhem, 1999).
3.1.2 Implications of teacher expectancy effect
Hence, after we look at all these case studies, we could conclude that the students' academic
performance is clearly tied to teacher's expectation. In other words, the students who were deemed
as "better" or "good" ends up achieving better also due to the higher expectation that the teacher was
giving to them. These result, especially Rosenthal and Jacobson's, demonstrated extremely powerful
self–fulfilling prophecy on the part of the teacher. This is because when a teacher forms certain
expectations towards their students based on whatever characteristics

Self Fulfilling Prophecy Examples
A psychological concept that I have chosen to talk about is the self–fulfilling prophecy.According to
the text, a self–fulfilling prophecy is a situation that occurs when our expectations about the
personality characteristics of others lead us to behave toward those others in ways that make those
beliefs come true. In simpler terms, it means a prediction that comes true based on belief and
behavior. An example would be if a person said that they will fail at something, whether it's a job or
competitions, so they put no work into it. They are setting themselves up for failure by not trying,
thus a self–fulfilling prophecy.
An example of a self–fulfilling prophecy would be in Oedipus rex. In the play, the Oracle of Delphi
tells Laius, Oedipus's

Self-Fulfilling Prophecy Journal Entry
My second entry will be on the evidence of self fulfilling prophecy's. For this example I will be
using experience from my own personal life. As a personality I am outwardly an optimistic person,
but when it comes to my own self I can be quite negative. In the spring I was taking English 95 to
upgrade my English so I could get into the MSPC program. I had taken this course before and failed
miserably. This time it was quite a different experience I was more positive about it, I was going to
classes and doing the work. I always was problematic when it came to tests. Near the end of the
program we had this big written test based on a novel study. I had not finished the novel but I had
spent time studying online and creating my own quizzes of

Based on Maiers' experience in the airport and her interactions with the supervisor, reflected
appraisal could impact the passengers' and supervisor's sense of self and self– worth by creating a
moment when everyone is in harmony. If each person sincerely gave back what they received it
would be a very positive environment. The passengers would feel that they were significate as well
as the supervisor Annie. It was not a pleasant situation to be in at the airport, 14 hours is a long time

Self-Defeating Prophecy And Self-Fulfilling Prophesy
Biases There are many biases that we face each and every day in this world. Some are
psychologically and some physically. In this assay a will discuss two biases that people face and
deal with. These biases are Self–defeating prophecy and self–fulfilling prophesy. I will discuss the
differences and how they impacted one's life. Self–defeating prophecy is a prediction that prevent a
prediction from happening. This is when a person does everything possible to stop the predicted
prophecy from happening. Some people like prophets, predict what is going to happen in someone
life, if the person does not agree with it he might choose to rebel. There are many ways on how
people chose to prevent prophecies in their life. Some chose to ignore the prophecy, ... Show more

This is common among human being. This is when one predict something in her life and work
towards it. Furthermore, self–fulfilling prophecy is also when someone predict something in one's
life and that person believes in it and work hard to accomplish it. Self–fulfilling prophecy can be
both negative and positive; however, Self–fulfilling prophesy is the opposite of self–defeating
prophesy. Self–fulfilling prophecy changes one behavior as he passes through different
developmental stages in life. People might change behavior because they want to accomplish their
goals or they believe that at a certain age something will happen. Self–fulfilling prophesy can be
imposed by someone or one can impose it to herself. It works best in people who believe in
themselves and have positive mind in whatever they prophecies in their life. These type of people
see potential in themselves and work really hard to accomplish their goals. Sometimes self–fulfilling
prophecy can be interdicted with self–defeating prophecy, one might believe that he is capable of
doing something and believe in fulfilling the prophecy but in reality the person does not feat the
position. In this case self–fulfilling prophecy turns into self–defeating prophesy. One of the
procedure to accomplishing self–fulfilling prophesy is to look at all possible solution and see if they
work for you and then go for them all. I have accomplished many self–fulfilling prophesies in my
life and am still working on accomplishing some. For example, when I was in primary school, I
predicted and convinced myself that I will finish high school and go to college. This is exactly what
happened and I see this as an accomplished self–fulfilling prophecy. It also can be any small
decisions that we make and accomplish then in life. Anything can be a self–fulfilling prophesy
weather imposed by others or imposed by you. As long as you believe and accomplish it. Self–
fulfilling prophecy make one

What is Self Fulfilling Prophecy and how does it affect educational outcome?
INTRODUCTION
Robert K. Merton (1910 – 2003) Professor of sociology invented the word self fulfilling prophecy to
help make tangible and popular the idea that some pronouncement or statement positive or negative
can alter peoples action to bring about fulfillment of same pronouncement. It is, however a tragedy
of human nature and experience that negative thoughts, ideas statements and actions bond more
easily than positive ones. The word self fulfilling prophecy conveys an impression of a
prophecy/statement that alters action ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
But once depositors had defined the situation otherwise, once they questioned the possibility of
having these promises fulfilled, the consequences of this unreal definition were real enough.
For Merton, therefore, so common is the pattern of the self fulfilling prophecy that it has a way it
applies to individual and to everyone situation. The conclusion of an observation or perception of a
situation develops into a belief that spurs corresponding behaviour whether positive or negative and
actions that eventually lead to fulfillment of the prophetic declaration. A typical Nigerian situation
where a man drives into his regular and favoured petrol/gas filling station and was told that the
station is out of fuel or long queues observed. He perceives the situation as scarcity of fuel and
spreads the news. Before long the situation is defined as such, provokes panic buying of fuel from
other filling stations. This leads to unscrupulous hoarding and further panic buying of the
commodity7 and an artificial scarcity is created eventually. The prophet will cite the actual course of
events as proof that he was right from the very beginning. A rumoured situation if not dismissed
becomes a real situation.8 A lady that loves a guy and believes that by marrying him they will make

What Are The Psychological Concepts Of Ryan's Subconscious...
The college years are the most influential years in a person's life. Not only do they help determine a
person's future, but they also help mold and shape a person's beliefs and personality in a way that
could stick with them for many years to come. With this in mind, picking a college can be a
strenuous and time consuming task. Ryan, (a high school senior) is having especial difficulty
choosing which college he should apply to. However, whether Ryan realizes it or not, many
psychological concepts are being drawn upon in his subconscious mind as he is beginning his
decision making. These concepts include, but are not limited to availability heuristic, the
hippocampus, intrinsic and extrinsic motivation, and self–fulfilling prophecy. Altogether, ... Show

First of all, extrinsic motivation is occurring when a person performs a behavior or task to "...earn a
reward or avoid punishment."(psychology.about.com). In contrast, intrinsic motivation occurrs when
a person performs a behavior or task because it is "...personally rewarding..."
(psychology.about.com). In other words, an example of extrinsic motivation is a child playing a
sport in order to get praise from their parents. However, an example of intrinsic motivation would be
a child playing a sport because they find the activity enjoyable. Intrinsic and extrinsic motivation
pertain to the motives Ryan has for applying to a college. For example, if Ryan decided to go to the
college where both his parents went to in order to receive praise from them, that would be an
extrinsic motivation. However, if Ryan decided to go to Florida Southern College not because both
his parents went there, but because he loves the ambiance of the campus, that would be a intrinsic

Movie Review : Forrest Gump

Movie Assignment
The movie I selected for this assignment is Forrest Gump, mostly because it is one of the most
widely known movies of all time. Instantly quotable and memorizable, and one I have watched a
million times over in every way possible. Forrest Gump, of Greenbow, AL, has one of the most
historically and culturally significant lives possible, from playing football for the University of
Alabama, to serving as an Infantry Sergeant in the Vietnam War. He also played ping–pong, fished
for shrimp, and met presidents Kennedy and Johnson. He met other famous people to include a
young Elvis, as well as John Lennon while on TV. He ran back and forth across the country for "3
years, 2 months, 14 days, 16 hours" as he put, and became a good father for his son when his
lifelong romantic interest died. He does all of this without realizing what he is doing as he is doing
it, simply because he is mildly retarded and just goes through life doing simply what he is told or
what he feels like doing. This story also contains examples of the concepts of interpersonal
communications, which consists of: the transactional nature of communications, self–image, self–
esteem, self–concept, online disclosures, and self–fulfilling prophecies, perception, principles of
nonverbal communication and personal presentation, and listening.
The first concept covered is the transactional nature of communications. Transactional nature of

The Self Fulfilling Prophecy Of Abandonment Essay
Chapter Two the Performative "Ever since this program has begun, I have been going head to head
with everyone: my brother, my sister, my parents, my coworkers, my ex–husband, everyone. I am
sharing my feelings, sharing my yearnings and upset is happening. I 'm shaking life up and it 's not
easy. People are angry with me. Isolation is usually what I run to, but I 've been breaking that and
moving to seek help from people. I see how my historical pattern has been to create a self–fulfilling
prophecy of abandonment." Joylyn Stover, excerpt from YOT Performative paper, 2015 My growth

assignments to transform my view. Dr. Judith Wright talks about the results of her students. "Early
in their work at Wright, students tended to not only achieve their initial goals, but also arrive at a
high level of sophistication in their awareness of their behaviors and processes. They used this

The Adequate Heuristic And The Self-Fulfilling Pi
While many functions of the self are useful others can cause repercussions, such as the availability
heuristic and the self–fulfilling prophecy. To further explain the effects, I will use an example about
a girl named Susie whom is about to take her midterm. Susie heard that female students have more
difficulty with math than male students leading her to believe she will fail, when in all actuality her
failure could probably be attributed to the availability heuristic and self–fulfilling prophecy.
The availability heuristic more than likely added to her worry as it is known as the mental rule of
thumb that creates judgments based on how easily available the information is within the mind.
Susie heard that female students had more difficulty

The Positive Importance Of The Halo Effect
Managers or coaches should know that sometimes their expectations can be formed by the Halo
effect (a psychological phenomenon that allows a general opinion of someone, to be gathered from
only one element). Despite the fact that influence of the Halo effect, as well as any other perceptual
effect, can have both negative and positive consequences, initial elimination of them will do
managers more objective. The race, gender, age, educational level and class biases, which are rooted
in stereotypes, also, influence the level of expectations that leaders have for employees.
Another factor that has its influence on the result of this conception is employees' acceptance or
resistance. People tend to respond positively to a manager's high expectations and confidence in
their abilities. Although, some employees are resistant to the Pygmalion effect, especially, when they
receive biased feedback. Of course, this doesn't mean that managers should always seek for
employee's acceptance. Careful consideration of target personality and a possibility of resistance can
alter employee's behaviour and trigger powerful effects. Some employees, particularly with a strong
sense of their own, often strive to disprove inaccurate/unappealing expectations by inspiring
imaginative and creative thinking. As usual, this happens when targeted employees are to discount
negative expectations and use other sources such as from peers or other co–workers to form their
perceptions of how competent or

Uses and Consequences of the Self Fulfilling Prophecy Essay
Uses and Consequences of the Self Fulfilling Prophecy
Abstract
The Self Fulfilling Prophecy is a concept that should be quite familiar in the classroom, yet is still a
mystery to many teachers today. Learning to properly use this idea will ultimately result in higher
student scores directly, and on a higher level, will cause students to model the expectations of the
teacher and expect much of themselves. This will set students up for highly successful autonomous
learning. However, ignorance or improper use of the SFP does not stimulate learning, but may
inhibit accomplishment. Teachers must strive to achieve a better understanding of this "Pygmalion
Effect" to create a powerful learning environment.
Uses and Consequences ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Analysis of other teachers' methods is a solid study base from which teachers can build a working
knowledge for use of SFP. Combine these findings with ones own past experiences will result in a
much more effective learning environment, one where the students are inspired by the teacher to
learn to their maximum potential. On a higher level, this in itself is an example of Pygmalion in
practice. The teacher expects more out of himself, through the students, than he is achieving at the
moment. Therefore, he raises expectations for himself, and in application he will eventually become
stronger for it.
The idea of the Pygmalion effect has been around for many years. Even before it was named, many
phrases were coined from its principles. "The first impression is the lasting impression"
demonstrates just one of the many adversities of the SFP. "The way others perceive us is largely
conditioned by expectations they may have in advance," (The Pygmalion Effect). All too often,
teachers make the mistake that we learn, and even consider a skill, of profiling a student and
determining their characteristics, before the first words are spoken (Tauber, 1998). Race, gender, and
build, are just a few factors influencing this pre–determination in the first few seconds of contact.
Teachers then further this profiling system by the events of the first day. This pattern is highly

Personal Reflection
This week I participated in a individual class exercise for my communications class. The exercise
was to find personality and identity traits about myself. First I will identify specific traits that were
similar in three appraisals. Second I will discuss differences in appraisals. Finally, I will describe
what accounts for differences and similarities, and what it illustrates about how well we know
ourselves.
What reflected appraisals (information from the two outside lists) correspond to your own
perceptions of yourself?
Through this exercise, I was pleasantly surprised by how well I know myself based off of what my
closest family said about me. Even though we may not have put the exact same words, we still had
very similar meanings. This was apparent when considering things written such as my mother
saying I am "Decisive" (Appendix B), myself stating that I am "Assertive"(Appendix C), and Nephi
"Straightforward". Another example an appraisal that was mirrored between the Mom and Nephi
both agree that I am "Creative" (Appendix A & B). A final example of our lists corresponding to
each others is when my mother said I am "Spiritual", and I concurred. Overall, in the lists, many of
the characteristic identities were very similar. I felt as if I knew what these two were going to say
about me, with few exceptions.
Which reflected appraisals are different from what appeared on your own list?
Even though many of the things on our appraisals were very similar, there were also some
interactions where we disagreed. This is evident in one specific example from Appendices A & B
where both of my families appraisals of me said I was "Creative". I tend to disagree with this notion,
because while outwardly, I may seem creative, I don't consider it to be a highly effective portion of
my Identity. Typically, I am far less creative than people view me to be. For example, I often get
writer's block, or as i like to refer to it, creativity block. So while I do like to create, I do not
consider it to be a large portion of my Identity.
What might account for these similarities or differences? There are a few things that I believe
account for the similarities and differences in the three appraisals. In the book, we studied the

Social–Psychological Principles of the Movie Unforgiven

Most movies have different social–psychological principles, however most people are watching
movies to be entertained, and not to psychologically analyze them. There are many different
principles that would be applicable to the film we are discussing however, I have chosen to analyze
three scenes discussing altruism, self–fulfilling prophecy, and counterfactual thinking. Please review
the following scenes and analysis from the movie Unforgiven:
Scene

Just then, Munny's shotgun enters the scene, and slowly everyone turns around to see him standing
in the doorway. Munny shoots and kills the owner, followed by several of Little Bill's crew. He ends
up shooting Little Bill but not killing him. Munny tells the remaining patrons to leave the saloon if
they don't want to get killed. While Munny is going back to his shot of whiskey, he hears Little Bill
cock his gun. Just as he is about to fire, Munny stops him by stomping on the arm holding the gun.
He stands over him, barrel down, Little Bill says "I don't deserve this, to die like this. I was building
a house". Munny then says "Deserve's got nothing to do with it". Little Bill says "I'll see you in hell
William Munny", and Munny cocks his gun, says "Yeah", and shoots him dead.
In this scene, the social–psychological principle that is relevant is self–fulfilling prophecy. Self–
fulfilling prophecy is "the process by which one's expectations about a person eventually lead that
person to behave in way that confirm those expectations" (Kassin, Markus & Fein, 2010). Ned
and Munny himself were the last people that thought Munny could be the whiskey drinking cold
blooded killer that he used to be. Munny got married, had kids and settled down. He was just a pig
farmer now. He hadn't even been on a horse in years. Munny had two small children now and did his
best to support them on his own. When Kid Schofield showed up at his ranch and asked him to help

Interpersonal Communication Concepts In The King's Speech
In the King's Speech, there are many interpersonal communication concepts. The movie is based on
a true story where Bertie the second son of King George the V who passed away, is crowned King
George the VI, but has suffered speech impediment since he was five years old. His wife Elizabeth,
the future queen of England arranges an appointment with a speech therapist Lionel Logue to help
him overcome his stammer. The two developed a friendship as time goes on and helps Bertie the
future king of England overcome his stammer and deliver a speech before going to war with
Germany. One of the things that stuck out the most of interpersonal communications is perception.
According to the text perception is "a process of using our senses to respond stimuli." The subtopics
I chose to discuss about The King's Speech are "self–fulfilling prophecy, symbolic interactionism
theory, identity management theory and stereotyping." The first subtopic is self–fulfilling prophecy.
Self–fulfilling prophecy is "a prediction or expectation about our future behavior that is likely to
come true because we believe it and thus act in ways that make it come true." Basically, self–fulling
prophecy is a prediction that becomes true, if the person who thinks it's still true. An example from
the movie, would be when Bertie meets Lionel and he discussed that he was born having a speech
impediment. Bertie explains to Lionel that he was born with being stammer, and Lionel doesn't
believe that. Lionel discusses that no child is born stammer and asked him again how long he has a
stammer. Bertie tells him that his earliest memory was when he was five. As he grows, he makes
himself believe that his stammer cannot be cured, and every time he meets a new doctor he still
believes that nothing will cure his stammer, no matter how many doctors he sees. The second
subtopic is symbolic interactionism theory. Symbolic interactionism theory is "the theory that our
understanding of ourselves and of the world is shaped by our interactions with those around us." An
example from the movie would be when Bertie becomes king better known as King George the VI.
Bertie becomes king, when his brother decides to step down from the throne and marries the woman

Exploring the Relationship and Influence between Teacher...
The main purpose of this study was to explore the relationship and influence between a teacher
expectations and student achievements in class. Does that student whom the teacher is always giving
extra lessons and is always more patient with or whom always takes the longest to answer a
question, and is always called on, is he the one who is getting the most out of that class? According
to several studies and experiments they all say yes and student does achieve to be more successful if
their teacher takes a little of their time to help the student and let them answer that hard question
with more time than the other students. Studies have shown that teachers' expectations are more
likely to influence the student's performance. The attitude of the teacher can change how they see
the actions of a student and allow them to make different opinions. As shown in Elisha Babad, Frank
Bernieri, and Robert Rosenthal's study (1991) from the book Social Psychology written by David G
Myers, students are very sensitive to teachers' facial expressions and body movements (111; bk.ch3).
A teacher's attitude can influence their judgment of a student in class room behavior; namely, their
own attitudes can cause the fundamental attribution error to occur as well as the Self– fulfilling
prophecy, as reflected in a student's performance.
Psychologist Robert Rosenthal and Principle Lenore Jacobson performed an experiment in which
they told teachers that a handful of students were diagnosed as a

Self-Fulfilling Prophecy
The idea that is paramount in the battle against prejudice and stereotyping is this idea of the Self–
Fulfilling Prophecy, or the idea that people will hear other peoples' beliefs about them and then will
enact in behavior that re–enforces the belief that others have (19–20). In the video when the subject
of the students fears of doing badly because they don't want to fulfill the biases other people have of
them, is then re–enforced by the idea that those individuals in the prejudicial groups with that bias
against them, actually don't do well in school, statistically (19–20). It is even further produced by
the thought of "The New Jim Crow" segment, and how white people have a bias that African
Americans are criminals, when in actuality they commit the ultimate attribution error (32–33).
Additionally, it also produces the idea in society of African Americans that they are supposed to be
criminals and when they are treated this way, they then become exactly what we believe them to be
(32–33). Intergroup Competition is the idea that social groups will extend from the desire for a
group to gain the scarce resources that exist (36–40). This idea is greatly supported by the segment
on affirmative action in the video (36–40). As said in the movie, the idea is that scholarship money
and grant money is a scarce resource when students decide to go to college (37–40). In this view, the
individuals who are against affirmative action are competing for that scarce resource (36–40). By

Self Fulfilling Prophecy Research Paper
Self–fulfilling prophecy is a prediction, despite attempts to circumvent or to yield the prophecy, that
is fulfilled in spite of its positive or negative affect on the individual. Once people are told this
prediction they inadvertently change their actions to what they perceive to be the correct reactions to
their fate. Essentially, regardless of their endeavors, the prophecy eventually happens because their
modified behavior sets off a chain reaction making them one step closer to fulfilling the prophecy.
Although the prophecy has no real influence on the individual's fate, human emotions get in the way
and eventually the prophecy always comes true. In most situations, had the individual not reacted or
acted in a neutral way to the particular ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Duncan came to Macbeth and Lady Macbeth, he didn't know that he is going to be murdered by
them. Macbeth wasn't certain about the murdering plan, but he was swayed by Lady Macbeth to
gain the throne. At the end of Act three, Macbeth became the King of the Scotland as the Witches
predicted. If it were not for his overbearing desire from his internal temptations, Macbeth may have
considered other options and not murder Duncan; regardless, he freely continued to ponder and
entertain the idea of committing more horrible

How First Impressions Are Formed
Individuals naturally form automatic, initial impressions about others almost instantly, without
taking into context further evidence or information. However, using this initial impression without
further context to form a complete profile of a person could lead to an inaccurate perception of the
individual. There is debate as to whether or not it is actually possible to change our initial first
impressions in the light of later evidence, or once an impression is formed, it is too late to change
our judgements.
In this essay, we will first discuss how first impressions are formed, and things that may attribute to
our ability to form impressions, such as physical appearance, familiarity, none verbal
communication, environment and behaviour. Following this, the difficulty of changing impressions
and the different types of processing that are involved in this will be examined, such as Superficial
and Systematic Processing. Lastly, ideas such as Correspondent Inference (Jones & Davis, 1965),
Self–Fulfilling Prophecy (Merton, 1948) and discounting will be discussed, in order to understand
why first impressions are so difficult to change.
It is human behaviour to attempt to predict the characteristics and traits of another person instantly,
usually without making a conscious effort to do so. An individual's appearance is usually the first
thing that catches attention, and thus tends to be the basis of initial impressions. For example,
attractive individuals are usually considered

Pygmalion Effect in Management
Pygmalion Effect in Management
Principles of Management
Abstract
The Pygmalion Effect in Management is the idea that workers are more productive when being
watched by members of management. Workers are eager to please bosses, or appear competent, so
productivity and rule following increases when a member of management is present. Your
expectations of people and their expectations of themselves are the key factors in how well people
perform at work.
Pygmalion Effect in Management
The Pygmalion Effect is a type of self–fulfilling prophecy (SFP) in which raising manager
expectations regarding subordinate performance boosts subordinate performance. Managers who are
led to expect more of their subordinates lead them to greater achievement. ... Show more content on

The Pygmalion Effect could be an important key to creating or improving a work force. Everything
should be done to create a highly positive attitude about employees in the minds of supervisors and
employees should feel that their supervisors and the organization believe in their potential as people.
Human Resource departments should present new employees to supervisors in a positive light while
highlighting the new employee's potential and making sure that the supervisor and the work group
have a clear expectation that the new employees will make a significant impact on the work group's
ability to succeed. Supervisors should be trained in how to impart a positive motivating attitude that
fosters a belief in the employee's ability to perform. Employees should have a clear understanding
that there is no question of them performing well. Employees should be given training opportunities
to bring out potential rather than working on weaknesses. Over all, the organization should strive to
create an understanding among its employees that their potential is great and that all is needed is for
that potential to be brought out.
Organization builders have their strongest and most powerful influence in times of economic
uncertainty and turbulence. When accepted ways of doing things aren't working well enough, a
manager's strong expectation about the destination, the processes to follow and the capabilities of

Examples Of Self-Fulfilling Prophecy: Harry Potter
Self–Fulfilling Prophecy – Harry Potter From the lecture slides over "social judgment," the
psychological term self–fulfilling prophecy is defined as the phenomenon whereby initially false
expectations cause the fulfillment of those expectations. An example of self–fulfilling prophecy can
be shown through the Harry Potter series character Voldemort, and the actions he takes once he
discovers the Sybill Trelawney's prophecy. The prophecy is about how a person would be born that
would eventually defeat Voldemort and overrule him, thus becoming the most powerful wizard.
Therefore, since Voldemort was known as the most powerful wizard, he felt threatened and did
everything in his power to kill Harry Potter, as he believed the Sybill Trelawney's

The Pros And Cons Of Abortion
Abortion is a very controversial topic in today's society. Abortion is the deliberate termination of a
human pregnancy, most often performed during the first 28 weeks (Abortion). Many people have
issues regarding this topic, while some support the idea. This paper will be covering the pros and
cons, people's attitudes, and how a researcher could possible change your perspective on the topic at
hand.
Controversies Over Abortion
Abortion is the deliberate termination of a human pregnancy, most often performed during the first
28 weeks (Abortion). Abortion is a controversial topic because one group of people would say it is
killing a human (Abortion ProCon.org). On the other hand, the other group of people would say that
the fetus is not developed enough to call it a human. This is an issue because it goes against morals
that people have been been raised up on. It even goes against religion in which it defies the word of
God. The other group says it's a fundamental right guaranteed by the Constitution (Abortion
ProCon.org).
People's attitudes toward abortion are typically reinforced by observational conditioning. People are
either on one side or the other, rarely is anybody up in the air. Observational learning is the process
of learning to respond in a particular way by watching others (King, 2017). In today's younger
society people view abortion as a good thing, an easy way out so to speak. They don't see the
repercussions of their actions. They think they can just go out and have their one night stand and if
something were to happen they can go and 'fix' the problem. In today's older society, people view
abortion as a bad thing. It's killing an innocent human that has done nothing to deserve that fate.
They see it as if the woman becomes pregnant they are to accept the responsibilities that comes with
it.
Self–fulfilling prophecy contributes to the development and attitude of people. Self–fulfilling
prophecy is by definition a prediction that directly or indirectly causes itself to become true, by the
very terms of the prophecy itself due to positive feedback between belief and behavior (King, 2017).

Basic Truths about Self-Fulfilling Prohpecy
Self–fulfilling prophecy is a basic concept of believing something wrong or right and using that
mindset to determine the outcome. Some argue it is socially motivated other say it is internally
generated through the wanting of something so bad. My general consensus is that self–fulfilling
prophecy is a true concept, based on several mitigating factors including but not limited to family
environment, educational interaction and medical settings.
As stated several circumstances can contribute to your self fulfilling prophecy. Family are one of the
key players in the self–fulfilling prophecy. Your parents the first people you see after being born,
they teach the rules, right from wrong help you learn basic concepts of life. Both parents play a huge
roll in the self–fulfilling prophecy, by encouraging you and pushing you to your farthest limits until
you reach the stars, or they can go just the opposite and break you down until you think nothing of
yourself, and instil the thought of hopelessness. Either way you are raised has an effect on yourself
and the way you perceive yourself, for example your father is an alcoholic and so was his father and
your mother says your are going to be just like your father as your grow up hearing this over and
over again it can make a huge impact bringing life to a self–fulfilling prophecy of your alcoholism.
Or you could have a father that encourages you to learn new things, follow through set goals and
reach them, he has higher

Self-Fulfilling Prophecy Essay
Self–fulfilling prophecy is described as any expectation, whether it is positive or negative, about a
situation or occurrence that influences an individual's behavior in such a way that it provides reason
that the expectation is to be achieved. While I am employed in an educational setting, an educator
may possibly give an expectation of a student being disruptive and ill–mannered. I work with
behavioral special education students would have a tendency to disrupt class. The students I work
with do have Behavioral Intervention Plans (BIPs) in order to be successful in a classroom setting.
However, some educators that I work with already have the idea that these individual students will

Examples Of Self-Fulfilling Prophecy
Teenagers are mischievous, conniving, narcissistic and hormonal young adults. At least that is the
common perspective that adults carry and believe. From the moment an adolescent's voice
complexion drops, they are seen differently through society's eyes. Teenager's reputations precede
them and this notorious reputation is the cause for their behavior. A psychological theory, commonly
known as Self–fulfilling prophecy suggests that teenagers act in these ways because they are
expected to. A self–fulfilling prophecy is a prediction that directly or indirectly causes itself to
become true, by the very terms of the prophecy itself, due to positive feedback between belief and
behavior. In other words, teens will behave in such ways that superiors expect them to, even if it's

"We went up to the lake because everyone went there". The antagonist's peers and society (the same
community that taught them to aspire to be "bad characters") around them had taught them that
mischievous and reckless actions are a social norm for people their age. Society has given them an
excuse to behave in such a way; that they're acting as teenagers do. If the superiors or community
leaders in a society expect teenagers to behave as adults, then they should be treated as such.
Teenagers should not be given a way out simply because they are expected to behave poorly,
because as "Greasy Lake" shows us, they will act poorly. Teens in today's society are also in a battle
for identity along with search for independence. In "Where are you going, where have you been"
Connie's search for independence is amplified by conflicts with her family and her efforts to grow
up quickly. Although Connie would like to view herself as an independent woman, she is still
dependent on the adult figures in her life. For example, her friend's dad drops Connie and her friend

An article titled, "Symbolic Interactions and the Development of Women Leaders in Higher

good leader in education, she needs to unitize soft skills (Gallent 2014: 213). These soft skills

I Am A Guinea Pig Of Sorts
As humans we create a certain image of ourselves , we are aware of who we are and measure our
own worth. It 's called self–concept, it is one of the most influential parts of our personality it helps
us create the present and future way we will act. One of the most common ways we do this is
through the self–fulfilling prophecy. For this essay I became a guinea pig of sorts and experimented
with this idea. Even before I took the rosenberg 's Self esteem test I knew for a fact that I suffer from
low self esteem. My sever depression, anxiety and several psychologists can attest to that. Another
thing I knew for a fact is that faux positive self talk and notes wasn 't going to help me, Rejecting
the idea before even doing the experiment probably altered my end results but it did prove that I like
most others also go through self fulfilling prophecies. It also made me realize i have a very negative
outlook on life, that i usually blame on my lack of serotonin. I understand that I have full power
over the way I feel about myself, sometimes i think that i use my mental illnesses as handicaps for
my low self esteem. I hear it often enough to know that Self esteem comes from within and one
must work on developing a positive view of themselves so that they have confidence in their own
value and not depend on external forces to feel a sense of worth. I realize that i skimmed over what
a self fulfilling prophecy is that is because I wanted to explain it to the best of my abilities. A

solving math problems. Will blames himself for his unhappy upbringing and turns this self–loathing

Self–Fulfilling Prophecies There are a couple of scenes in the movie Good Will Hunting that show
self–fulfilling prophecies. The first scene in the movie that depicts self–fulfilling prophecies is when
Will goes to call Skylar but then does not say anything when she answers the phone. The second
scene in Good Will Hunting that represents self–fulfilling prophecies is when Will and Skylar are
laying in bed and Skylar asks Will to go to California with her. Will gets defensive and begins to
push Skylar away and they get into a heated argument. Will is defensive because he is trying to push
Skylar away before she does it to him. Skylar tells Will that she loves him but Will still continues to
push her away. Will ends up leaving but first tells Skylar that he does not love her. The social–
psychological principle that is relevant to this scene is self–fulfilling prophecies. The definition of
self–fulfilling prophecy is "the observation that expectations about the future tend to come true due
to the fact that our expectations affect what we think, say, and do and those actions affect the
outcome of events and situations". Robert Merton describes self–fulfilling prophecies as the
situation where we end up labeling others, and through this we actually influence their action, and

Self Fulfilling Prophecy Summary
Rosenthal and Jacobson's (1968) study on self–fulfilling prophecies focuses on the effects of
teacher's expectations on their student's performance capabilities and the resulting outcome these
implications have on the student's academic improvements. By falsely informing student's teachers
of individual student's increased potential for knowledge growth at the beginning of the semester,
they were able to study both the regular students and the students with supposed increased
intelligence throughout the year to evaluate how the teacher's perception of these students could
have impacted the student's academic behavior. While the independent variable in the study was the
expectations the teachers had formed of the students, the dependent variable ... Show more content

In a previous study, Rosenthal tested the effects of the self–fulfilling prophecy in a laboratory setting
using rats that were divided into two groups; one supposedly bred to be bright and do well in the
maze and a dull group expected to do worse in the maze. Children were then given one rat from
either condition and were instructed to train their rat to complete the maze efficiently. Rosenthal
found that the children's behaviors who were under the impression that their rat had been bred to be
more intelligent, reflected their change in treatment towards the rats and resulted in the brighter rats
performing better than the dull rats (Rosenthal & Jacobson, 1968). The ultimate purpose of the
Rosenthal and Jacobson study was to measure the effects of advising the teachers which students

Essay on Self-fulfilling Prophecy
More often than not, the outcomes of events that occur in a person's life is the product of the idea of
the self–fulfilling prophecy. It is that which "occurs when a person's expectations of an event make
the outcome more likely to occur than would otherwise have been true" (Adler and Towne, Looking
Out, Looking In 66). Or restated, as Henry Ford once put it, "If you think you can, you can. If you
think you can't, you're right!" This brief research paper touches on the two types of self–fulfilling
prophecies, those that are self–imposed and those that are imposed by others. Additionally, it gives a
discussion on how great of an influence it is in each person's life, both positively and negatively, and
how it consequently helps to mold ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The point in this case is that realistic expectations play a great role in promoting positive and
negative outcomes. But chances are, if he had a positive outlook, despite his ill preparedness, he stay
may have received a higher failing grade. Nonetheless, Grigsby's examples are interesting and does
a great job of portraying what occurs in an individual's mind when that person is projecting or
making judgements of what outcome a certain event is going to yield. It is so because not only are
they uncomplicated enough to visualize, but also because they are examples that one may even
recall having done. The greater message in this sub–category is that this kind of thinking can and
does play a large role in helping to determine how and what one feels during pre–conceived events
and the reality that is borne from it. In the case of the person thinking he will not have a good time
at the party he attends, he ends up not having it because he generated responses that contributed to
that outcome (i.e. not socializing, criticizing the home, etc.). As for the student who performed well
on his math test, he partly did so because of good preparation and knowledge and a realistic
expectation that the other was lacking. Or as Adler and Towne put it:
The self–fulfilling prophecy is an important force in interpersonal communication, but it doesn't
explain or affect all behavior. There are certainly times when the expectation of an event's outcome
won't bring it about.

Changing a person's views by force will accomplish nothing. There is no perfect, simple solution to

Self–Fulfilling Prophecy is a concept developed by Robert K, Merton in 1948 to explain how a

Inquiries have been conducted to determine the career path for people of color. While the link has

when children limit their future due to the present in which they are a part of a systemic problem for

Self-Fulfilling Prophecy Definition
Are you so in–tune with yourself that you know what is true, or are you assuming what is real based
on that situation? There are millions of cases that humans mistake unknown falsehood for perceived
truth. That's the idea of self–fulfilling prophecy; it is the assumption that causes itself to become
true. Typically when I think of self–fulfilling prophecy, I imagine it being bad, because the
individual is believing a false definition of a circumstance. However, positive consequences can
derive from self–fulfilling prophecy. For example, if someone believes they will do well in an exam
they will most likely receive a good grade. From my own experience, the more confidence I have in
myself in preparation for an exam, the better I do on the test. When I have little confidence, I don't
try as hard because I, "already know I will do poorly". Guess what? What I expected occurred. I
convinced myself I would do poorly, so I did. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
I have had an enduring situation that I have been fighting to "switch" my self–fulfilling prophecy.
My circumstance has been this: for years I have been telling myself I have a bad memory. I have
declared that to be true of myself. Because of that, my natural tendency is to forget things easier or
fail to attempt to remember (make excuses), thus making my consequences real. The more I believe
the more I become, I am a part of the negative consequence. Now, I am trying to turn that negative
to a positive. As I said before, self–fulfilling prophecy goes both ways. Rather than accept that I do
not have a superior memory, I can tell myself that my memory can improve – that it is not bad. My
hope is that will become true. It is the belief that I can improve and it is not horrible, that a real,
positive, true consequence will

Peer Transmitted Culture
(148) Peer transmitted culture is the theory that we only obtain a certain amount of influence of

saying as a kid in school we care more about what others think at school rather than what our
families think. For a good example a teenagers family might not have anyone who smokes in it but
if the teen was to hang out with kids who pick up the habit it could influence the teen into doing so
to fit in with his or her peers. Almost like norms kids will adapt to what's accepted and not accepted

Communication And Identity

  • 1. Communication And Identity Journal #2: Communication and Identity: Creating and Presenting the Self Self concept is the idea you have of yourself that is pretty solid and fairly unchanging over time, I thought this term was interesting because obviously everyone has a self concept but I thought it was unique how people don't want to change their self concept even if the new perception would be better than the old one. Later on in the chapter it discusses the perceived self which mirrors the self concept, it is our belief about ourself when we are perfectly honest with ourselves, we don't usually share this self with others because this is our deepest and most private perception of who we are, not the person we show the world. Self esteem is the assessment of our worth ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... One example is one time I just knew I would do a terrible job on an essay that I didn't like the subject matter, so I said "I can't write" and slacked off on the paper and only recieved a barely passing grade, this is a prime example of a self–fulfilling prophecy and has happened to me more times than I care to admit. I think that when we believe we will do really well on something we work harder, here is a real life example: "I know I can make 90%, but wouldn't it be cool if I could make 95%?!" often when I believe I can do well I want it to be perfection but when I believe I cannot do a good job I barely even try and that gets me in trouble. However there is another type of self–fulfilling prophecy, that is the kind that others make about you, I have found this to be very influential as well, one time a humanities professor told me I would probably only make at best a C in his class and I immediately dropped his class. Looking back I wonder if I should have stuck around and proved him wrong but in the long run I am thankful I didn't because not only was I not interested in being taught by someone that didn't believe I could do great things but also after reading about self fulfilling prophecy I don't think that I would have done well in that class at all because of the psychological effect of his doubt. I have had many wonderful professors that not only believed in me but helped me and I have done well in their classes. What others believe about us can unfortunately make a big difference in our ... • 3. 3.1 Teacher Expectancy Effect: Case Studies, Implications,... 3.1 Teacher Expectancy Effect When we discuss about the interactionist (or symbolic interactionist) view in the context of educational institutions, teacher expectancy effect would be one of the major areas affecting the growth and improvement of students both in academically and in extra–curricular, mentally and physically. In other words, teacher expectancy effect is something that ties closely to the social development of the students as a whole. Teacher expectancy effect is defined as "the impact that a teacher's expectations about a student's performance may have on the student's actual achievements" (Schaefer & Lamm, 1995, p. 461). However, before we look at what teacher expectancy effect really is, it is crucial for us to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Note that these classifications ("better", "average" and "weakest") were all defined solely by the teacher according to her impressionistic perception, with nothing whatsoever like a placement test. This categorization was also found to be based on the social classes of the students, whereby the "better" ones belong to a higher social class and the "weakest" one from lower social classes (Covington, 1992, p.140). Other researchers have also been carried out since then and the expectancy effect seems to thrive in all context of social life be it with university scholar at higher educational institutions or working adults at manufacturing company. This phenomenon has also been later coined as the "Pygmalion phenomenon" (Rhem, 1999). 3.1.2 Implications of teacher expectancy effect Hence, after we look at all these case studies, we could conclude that the students' academic performance is clearly tied to teacher's expectation. In other words, the students who were deemed as "better" or "good" ends up achieving better also due to the higher expectation that the teacher was giving to them. These result, especially Rosenthal and Jacobson's, demonstrated extremely powerful self–fulfilling prophecy on the part of the teacher. This is because when a teacher forms certain expectations towards their students based on whatever characteristics ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 5. Self Fulfilling Prophecy Examples A psychological concept that I have chosen to talk about is the self–fulfilling prophecy.According to the text, a self–fulfilling prophecy is a situation that occurs when our expectations about the personality characteristics of others lead us to behave toward those others in ways that make those beliefs come true. In simpler terms, it means a prediction that comes true based on belief and behavior. An example would be if a person said that they will fail at something, whether it's a job or competitions, so they put no work into it. They are setting themselves up for failure by not trying, thus a self–fulfilling prophecy. An example of a self–fulfilling prophecy would be in Oedipus rex. • 7. Self-Fulfilling Prophecy Journal Entry My second entry will be on the evidence of self fulfilling prophecy's. For this example I will be using experience from my own personal life. As a personality I am outwardly an optimistic person, but when it comes to my own self I can be quite negative. In the spring I was taking English 95 to upgrade my English so I could get into the MSPC program. I had taken this course before and failed miserably. This time it was quite a different experience I was more positive about it, I was going to classes and doing the work. I always was problematic when it came to tests. Near the end of the program we had this big written test based on a novel study. I had not finished the novel but I had spent time studying online and creating my own quizzes of ... Self-Fulfilling Prophecies: Maiers Experience In The Airport Based on Maiers' experience in the airport and her interactions with the supervisor, reflected appraisal could impact the passengers' and supervisor's sense of self and self– worth by creating a moment when everyone is in harmony. If each person sincerely gave back what they received it would be a very positive environment. The passengers would feel that they were significate as well as the supervisor Annie. It was not a pleasant situation to be in at the airport, 14 hours is a long time to be displaced. • 11. Self-Defeating Prophecy And Self-Fulfilling Prophesy Biases There are many biases that we face each and every day in this world. Some are psychologically and some physically. In this assay a will discuss two biases that people face and deal with. These biases are Self–defeating prophecy and self–fulfilling prophesy. I will discuss the differences and how they impacted one's life. Self–defeating prophecy is a prediction that prevent a prediction from happening. This is when a person does everything possible to stop the predicted prophecy from happening. Some people like prophets, predict what is going to happen in someone life, if the person does not agree with it he might choose to rebel. There are many ways on how people chose to prevent prophecies in their life. Some chose to ignore the prophecy, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This is common among human being. This is when one predict something in her life and work towards it. Furthermore, self–fulfilling prophecy is also when someone predict something in one's life and that person believes in it and work hard to accomplish it. Self–fulfilling prophecy can be both negative and positive; however, Self–fulfilling prophesy is the opposite of self–defeating prophesy. Self–fulfilling prophecy changes one behavior as he passes through different developmental stages in life. People might change behavior because they want to accomplish their goals or they believe that at a certain age something will happen. Self–fulfilling prophesy can be imposed by someone or one can impose it to herself. It works best in people who believe in themselves and have positive mind in whatever they prophecies in their life. These type of people see potential in themselves and work really hard to accomplish their goals. Sometimes self–fulfilling prophecy can be interdicted with self–defeating prophecy, one might believe that he is capable of doing something and believe in fulfilling the prophecy but in reality the person does not feat the position. In this case self–fulfilling prophecy turns into self–defeating prophesy. One of the procedure to accomplishing self–fulfilling prophesy is to look at all possible solution and see if they work for you and then go for them all. I have accomplished many self–fulfilling prophesies in my life and am still working on accomplishing some. For example, when I was in primary school, I predicted and convinced myself that I will finish high school and go to college. This is exactly what happened and I see this as an accomplished self–fulfilling prophecy. It also can be any small decisions that we make and accomplish then in life. Anything can be a self–fulfilling prophesy weather imposed by others or imposed by you. As long as you believe and accomplish it. Self– fulfilling prophecy make one ... • 13. What Is Self Fulfilling Prophecy and How Does It Affect... OGUNLADE, PHIBEAN OLATUNDE REG. NO: 2012/4018 COURSE: SOCIOLOGY OF EDUCATION COURSE CODE: EFC 705 COURSE LECTURER: DR A.O. K. NOAH What is Self Fulfilling Prophecy and how does it affect educational outcome? INTRODUCTION Robert K. Merton (1910 – 2003) Professor of sociology invented the word self fulfilling prophecy to help make tangible and popular the idea that some pronouncement or statement positive or negative can alter peoples action to bring about fulfillment of same pronouncement. It is, however a tragedy of human nature and experience that negative thoughts, ideas statements and actions bond more easily than positive ones. The word self fulfilling prophecy conveys an impression of a prophecy/statement that alters action ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... But once depositors had defined the situation otherwise, once they questioned the possibility of having these promises fulfilled, the consequences of this unreal definition were real enough. For Merton, therefore, so common is the pattern of the self fulfilling prophecy that it has a way it applies to individual and to everyone situation. The conclusion of an observation or perception of a situation develops into a belief that spurs corresponding behaviour whether positive or negative and actions that eventually lead to fulfillment of the prophetic declaration. A typical Nigerian situation where a man drives into his regular and favoured petrol/gas filling station and was told that the station is out of fuel or long queues observed. He perceives the situation as scarcity of fuel and spreads the news. Before long the situation is defined as such, provokes panic buying of fuel from other filling stations. This leads to unscrupulous hoarding and further panic buying of the commodity7 and an artificial scarcity is created eventually. The prophet will cite the actual course of events as proof that he was right from the very beginning. A rumoured situation if not dismissed becomes a real situation.8 A lady that loves a guy and believes that by marrying him they will make a good couple. • 15. What Are The Psychological Concepts Of Ryan's Subconscious... The college years are the most influential years in a person's life. Not only do they help determine a person's future, but they also help mold and shape a person's beliefs and personality in a way that could stick with them for many years to come. With this in mind, picking a college can be a strenuous and time consuming task. Ryan, (a high school senior) is having especial difficulty choosing which college he should apply to. However, whether Ryan realizes it or not, many psychological concepts are being drawn upon in his subconscious mind as he is beginning his decision making. These concepts include, but are not limited to availability heuristic, the hippocampus, intrinsic and extrinsic motivation, and self–fulfilling prophecy. Altogether, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... First of all, extrinsic motivation is occurring when a person performs a behavior or task to "...earn a reward or avoid punishment."(psychology.about.com). In contrast, intrinsic motivation occurrs when a person performs a behavior or task because it is "...personally rewarding..." (psychology.about.com). In other words, an example of extrinsic motivation is a child playing a sport in order to get praise from their parents. However, an example of intrinsic motivation would be a child playing a sport because they find the activity enjoyable. Intrinsic and extrinsic motivation pertain to the motives Ryan has for applying to a college. For example, if Ryan decided to go to the college where both his parents went to in order to receive praise from them, that would be an extrinsic motivation. However, if Ryan decided to go to Florida Southern College not because both his parents went there, but because he loves the ambiance of the campus, that would be a intrinsic ... • 17. Movie Review : Forrest Gump Josh Kaplan 11SEP 2015 SPCH125 Movie Assignment The movie I selected for this assignment is Forrest Gump, mostly because it is one of the most widely known movies of all time. Instantly quotable and memorizable, and one I have watched a million times over in every way possible. Forrest Gump, of Greenbow, AL, has one of the most historically and culturally significant lives possible, from playing football for the University of Alabama, to serving as an Infantry Sergeant in the Vietnam War. He also played ping–pong, fished for shrimp, and met presidents Kennedy and Johnson. He met other famous people to include a young Elvis, as well as John Lennon while on TV. He ran back and forth across the country for "3 years, 2 months, 14 days, 16 hours" as he put, and became a good father for his son when his lifelong romantic interest died. He does all of this without realizing what he is doing as he is doing it, simply because he is mildly retarded and just goes through life doing simply what he is told or what he feels like doing. This story also contains examples of the concepts of interpersonal communications, which consists of: the transactional nature of communications, self–image, self– esteem, self–concept, online disclosures, and self–fulfilling prophecies, perception, principles of nonverbal communication and personal presentation, and listening. The first concept covered is the transactional nature of communications. Transactional nature of communications essentially ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The Self Fulfilling Prophecy Of Abandonment Essay Chapter Two the Performative "Ever since this program has begun, I have been going head to head with everyone: my brother, my sister, my parents, my coworkers, my ex–husband, everyone. I am sharing my feelings, sharing my yearnings and upset is happening. I 'm shaking life up and it 's not easy. People are angry with me. Isolation is usually what I run to, but I 've been breaking that and moving to seek help from people. I see how my historical pattern has been to create a self–fulfilling prophecy of abandonment." Joylyn Stover, excerpt from YOT Performative paper, 2015 My growth transformation over the past 30 months was not an accident. There was a map that has led me to become the person I am today, and there is a map to move me into the person I will become. Wright Performative Education is described as technologies and methods that have been synthesized from great thinkers such as Vygotsky, Adler, Nietzsche, Kierkegaard, Sartre, Mezirow, and Berne, to name a few, to provide grounded and practical applications designed to propel students into creating great lives. In my Performative journey, I begin to shift my chronically unsatisfied self by doing assignments to transform my view. Dr. Judith Wright talks about the results of her students. "Early in their work at Wright, students tended to not only achieve their initial goals, but also arrive at a high level of sophistication in their awareness of their behaviors and processes. They used this awareness to ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The Adequate Heuristic And The Self-Fulfilling Pi While many functions of the self are useful others can cause repercussions, such as the availability heuristic and the self–fulfilling prophecy. To further explain the effects, I will use an example about a girl named Susie whom is about to take her midterm. Susie heard that female students have more difficulty with math than male students leading her to believe she will fail, when in all actuality her failure could probably be attributed to the availability heuristic and self–fulfilling prophecy. The availability heuristic more than likely added to her worry as it is known as the mental rule of thumb that creates judgments based on how easily available the information is within the mind. • 23. The Positive Importance Of The Halo Effect Managers or coaches should know that sometimes their expectations can be formed by the Halo effect (a psychological phenomenon that allows a general opinion of someone, to be gathered from only one element). Despite the fact that influence of the Halo effect, as well as any other perceptual effect, can have both negative and positive consequences, initial elimination of them will do managers more objective. The race, gender, age, educational level and class biases, which are rooted in stereotypes, also, influence the level of expectations that leaders have for employees. Another factor that has its influence on the result of this conception is employees' acceptance or resistance. People tend to respond positively to a manager's high expectations and confidence in their abilities. Although, some employees are resistant to the Pygmalion effect, especially, when they receive biased feedback. Of course, this doesn't mean that managers should always seek for employee's acceptance. Careful consideration of target personality and a possibility of resistance can alter employee's behaviour and trigger powerful effects. Some employees, particularly with a strong sense of their own, often strive to disprove inaccurate/unappealing expectations by inspiring imaginative and creative thinking. As usual, this happens when targeted employees are to discount negative expectations and use other sources such as from peers or other co–workers to form their perceptions of how competent or ... Uses and Consequences of the Self Fulfilling Prophecy Essay Uses and Consequences of the Self Fulfilling Prophecy Abstract The Self Fulfilling Prophecy is a concept that should be quite familiar in the classroom, yet is still a mystery to many teachers today. Learning to properly use this idea will ultimately result in higher student scores directly, and on a higher level, will cause students to model the expectations of the teacher and expect much of themselves. This will set students up for highly successful autonomous learning. However, ignorance or improper use of the SFP does not stimulate learning, but may inhibit accomplishment. Teachers must strive to achieve a better understanding of this "Pygmalion Effect" to create a powerful learning environment. Uses and Consequences ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Analysis of other teachers' methods is a solid study base from which teachers can build a working knowledge for use of SFP. Combine these findings with ones own past experiences will result in a much more effective learning environment, one where the students are inspired by the teacher to learn to their maximum potential. On a higher level, this in itself is an example of Pygmalion in practice. The teacher expects more out of himself, through the students, than he is achieving at the moment. Therefore, he raises expectations for himself, and in application he will eventually become stronger for it. The idea of the Pygmalion effect has been around for many years. Even before it was named, many phrases were coined from its principles. "The first impression is the lasting impression" demonstrates just one of the many adversities of the SFP. "The way others perceive us is largely conditioned by expectations they may have in advance," (The Pygmalion Effect). All too often, teachers make the mistake that we learn, and even consider a skill, of profiling a student and determining their characteristics, before the first words are spoken (Tauber, 1998). Race, gender, and build, are just a few factors influencing this pre–determination in the first few seconds of contact. Teachers then further this profiling system by the events of the first day. This pattern is highly ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 27. Personal Reflection This week I participated in a individual class exercise for my communications class. The exercise was to find personality and identity traits about myself. First I will identify specific traits that were similar in three appraisals. Second I will discuss differences in appraisals. Finally, I will describe what accounts for differences and similarities, and what it illustrates about how well we know ourselves. What reflected appraisals (information from the two outside lists) correspond to your own perceptions of yourself? Through this exercise, I was pleasantly surprised by how well I know myself based off of what my closest family said about me. Even though we may not have put the exact same words, we still had very similar meanings. This was apparent when considering things written such as my mother saying I am "Decisive" (Appendix B), myself stating that I am "Assertive"(Appendix C), and Nephi "Straightforward". Another example an appraisal that was mirrored between the Mom and Nephi both agree that I am "Creative" (Appendix A & B). A final example of our lists corresponding to each others is when my mother said I am "Spiritual", and I concurred. Overall, in the lists, many of the characteristic identities were very similar. I felt as if I knew what these two were going to say about me, with few exceptions. Which reflected appraisals are different from what appeared on your own list? Even though many of the things on our appraisals were very similar, there were also some interactions where we disagreed. This is evident in one specific example from Appendices A & B where both of my families appraisals of me said I was "Creative". I tend to disagree with this notion, because while outwardly, I may seem creative, I don't consider it to be a highly effective portion of my Identity. Typically, I am far less creative than people view me to be. For example, I often get writer's block, or as i like to refer to it, creativity block. So while I do like to create, I do not consider it to be a large portion of my Identity. What might account for these similarities or differences? There are a few things that I believe account for the similarities and differences in the three appraisals. In the book, we studied the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Social–Psychological Principles of the Movie Unforgiven Florida Institute of Technology Most movies have different social–psychological principles, however most people are watching movies to be entertained, and not to psychologically analyze them. There are many different principles that would be applicable to the film we are discussing however, I have chosen to analyze three scenes discussing altruism, self–fulfilling prophecy, and counterfactual thinking. Please review the following scenes and analysis from the movie Unforgiven: Scene * The first scene is the opening scene when a man was upstairs in the saloon/brothel with a prostitute – Delilah, who did not want to have sex with the man she was in the room with. In turn, he ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Just then, Munny's shotgun enters the scene, and slowly everyone turns around to see him standing in the doorway. Munny shoots and kills the owner, followed by several of Little Bill's crew. He ends up shooting Little Bill but not killing him. Munny tells the remaining patrons to leave the saloon if they don't want to get killed. While Munny is going back to his shot of whiskey, he hears Little Bill cock his gun. Just as he is about to fire, Munny stops him by stomping on the arm holding the gun. He stands over him, barrel down, Little Bill says "I don't deserve this, to die like this. I was building a house". Munny then says "Deserve's got nothing to do with it". Little Bill says "I'll see you in hell William Munny", and Munny cocks his gun, says "Yeah", and shoots him dead. In this scene, the social–psychological principle that is relevant is self–fulfilling prophecy. Self– fulfilling prophecy is "the process by which one's expectations about a person eventually lead that person to behave in way that confirm those expectations" (Kassin, Markus & Fein, 2010). Ned and Munny himself were the last people that thought Munny could be the whiskey drinking cold blooded killer that he used to be. Munny got married, had kids and settled down. He was just a pig farmer now. He hadn't even been on a horse in years. Munny had two small children now and did his best to support them on his own. • 31. Interpersonal Communication Concepts In The King's Speech In the King's Speech, there are many interpersonal communication concepts. The movie is based on a true story where Bertie the second son of King George the V who passed away, is crowned King George the VI, but has suffered speech impediment since he was five years old. His wife Elizabeth, the future queen of England arranges an appointment with a speech therapist Lionel Logue to help him overcome his stammer. The two developed a friendship as time goes on and helps Bertie the future king of England overcome his stammer and deliver a speech before going to war with Germany. One of the things that stuck out the most of interpersonal communications is perception. According to the text perception is "a process of using our senses to respond stimuli." The subtopics I chose to discuss about The King's Speech are "self–fulfilling prophecy, symbolic interactionism theory, identity management theory and stereotyping." The first subtopic is self–fulfilling prophecy. Self–fulfilling prophecy is "a prediction or expectation about our future behavior that is likely to come true because we believe it and thus act in ways that make it come true." Basically, self–fulling prophecy is a prediction that becomes true, if the person who thinks it's still true. An example from the movie, would be when Bertie meets Lionel and he discussed that he was born having a speech impediment. Bertie explains to Lionel that he was born with being stammer, and Lionel doesn't believe that. Lionel discusses that no child is born stammer and asked him again how long he has a stammer. Bertie tells him that his earliest memory was when he was five. As he grows, he makes himself believe that his stammer cannot be cured, and every time he meets a new doctor he still believes that nothing will cure his stammer, no matter how many doctors he sees. The second subtopic is symbolic interactionism theory. Symbolic interactionism theory is "the theory that our understanding of ourselves and of the world is shaped by our interactions with those around us." An example from the movie would be when Bertie becomes king better known as King George the VI. Bertie becomes king, when his brother decides to step down from the throne and marries the woman he ... • 33. Exploring the Relationship and Influence between Teacher... The main purpose of this study was to explore the relationship and influence between a teacher expectations and student achievements in class. Does that student whom the teacher is always giving extra lessons and is always more patient with or whom always takes the longest to answer a question, and is always called on, is he the one who is getting the most out of that class? According to several studies and experiments they all say yes and student does achieve to be more successful if their teacher takes a little of their time to help the student and let them answer that hard question with more time than the other students. Studies have shown that teachers' expectations are more likely to influence the student's performance. The attitude of the teacher can change how they see the actions of a student and allow them to make different opinions. As shown in Elisha Babad, Frank Bernieri, and Robert Rosenthal's study (1991) from the book Social Psychology written by David G Myers, students are very sensitive to teachers' facial expressions and body movements (111; bk.ch3). A teacher's attitude can influence their judgment of a student in class room behavior; namely, their own attitudes can cause the fundamental attribution error to occur as well as the Self– fulfilling prophecy, as reflected in a student's performance. Psychologist Robert Rosenthal and Principle Lenore Jacobson performed an experiment in which they told teachers that a handful of students were diagnosed as a ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 35. Self-Fulfilling Prophecy The idea that is paramount in the battle against prejudice and stereotyping is this idea of the Self– Fulfilling Prophecy, or the idea that people will hear other peoples' beliefs about them and then will enact in behavior that re–enforces the belief that others have (19–20). In the video when the subject of the students fears of doing badly because they don't want to fulfill the biases other people have of them, is then re–enforced by the idea that those individuals in the prejudicial groups with that bias against them, actually don't do well in school, statistically (19–20). It is even further produced by the thought of "The New Jim Crow" segment, and how white people have a bias that African Americans are criminals, when in actuality they commit the ultimate attribution error (32–33). Additionally, it also produces the idea in society of African Americans that they are supposed to be criminals and when they are treated this way, they then become exactly what we believe them to be (32–33). Intergroup Competition is the idea that social groups will extend from the desire for a group to gain the scarce resources that exist (36–40). This idea is greatly supported by the segment on affirmative action in the video (36–40). As said in the movie, the idea is that scholarship money and grant money is a scarce resource when students decide to go to college (37–40). In this view, the individuals who are against affirmative action are competing for that scarce resource (36–40). By ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Self Fulfilling Prophecy Research Paper Self–fulfilling prophecy is a prediction, despite attempts to circumvent or to yield the prophecy, that is fulfilled in spite of its positive or negative affect on the individual. Once people are told this prediction they inadvertently change their actions to what they perceive to be the correct reactions to their fate. Essentially, regardless of their endeavors, the prophecy eventually happens because their modified behavior sets off a chain reaction making them one step closer to fulfilling the prophecy. Although the prophecy has no real influence on the individual's fate, human emotions get in the way and eventually the prophecy always comes true. • 43. How First Impressions Are Formed Individuals naturally form automatic, initial impressions about others almost instantly, without taking into context further evidence or information. However, using this initial impression without further context to form a complete profile of a person could lead to an inaccurate perception of the individual. There is debate as to whether or not it is actually possible to change our initial first impressions in the light of later evidence, or once an impression is formed, it is too late to change our judgements. In this essay, we will first discuss how first impressions are formed, and things that may attribute to our ability to form impressions, such as physical appearance, familiarity, none verbal communication, environment and behaviour. Following this, the difficulty of changing impressions and the different types of processing that are involved in this will be examined, such as Superficial and Systematic Processing. Lastly, ideas such as Correspondent Inference (Jones & Davis, 1965), Self–Fulfilling Prophecy (Merton, 1948) and discounting will be discussed, in order to understand why first impressions are so difficult to change. It is human behaviour to attempt to predict the characteristics and traits of another person instantly, usually without making a conscious effort to do so. An individual's appearance is usually the first thing that catches attention, and thus tends to be the basis of initial impressions. For example, attractive individuals are usually considered ... • 49. The Pros And Cons Of Abortion Abortion is a very controversial topic in today's society. Abortion is the deliberate termination of a human pregnancy, most often performed during the first 28 weeks (Abortion). Many people have issues regarding this topic, while some support the idea. This paper will be covering the pros and cons, people's attitudes, and how a researcher could possible change your perspective on the topic at hand. Controversies Over Abortion Abortion is the deliberate termination of a human pregnancy, most often performed during the first 28 weeks (Abortion). Abortion is a controversial topic because one group of people would say it is killing a human (Abortion ProCon.org). On the other hand, the other group of people would say that the fetus is not developed enough to call it a human. This is an issue because it goes against morals that people have been been raised up on. It even goes against religion in which it defies the word of God. The other group says it's a fundamental right guaranteed by the Constitution (Abortion ProCon.org). People's attitudes toward abortion are typically reinforced by observational conditioning. People are either on one side or the other, rarely is anybody up in the air. Observational learning is the process of learning to respond in a particular way by watching others (King, 2017). In today's younger society people view abortion as a good thing, an easy way out so to speak. They don't see the repercussions of their actions. They think they can just go out and have their one night stand and if something were to happen they can go and 'fix' the problem. In today's older society, people view abortion as a bad thing. It's killing an innocent human that has done nothing to deserve that fate. They see it as if the woman becomes pregnant they are to accept the responsibilities that comes with it. Self–fulfilling prophecy contributes to the development and attitude of people. Self–fulfilling prophecy is by definition a prediction that directly or indirectly causes itself to become true, by the very terms of the prophecy itself due to positive feedback between belief and behavior (King, 2017). Some argue it is socially motivated other say it is internally generated through the wanting of something so bad. My general consensus is that self–fulfilling prophecy is a true concept, based on several mitigating factors including but not limited to family environment, educational interaction and medical settings. As stated several circumstances can contribute to your self fulfilling prophecy. Family are one of the key players in the self–fulfilling prophecy. Your parents the first people you see after being born, they teach the rules, right from wrong help you learn basic concepts of life. Both parents play a huge roll in the self–fulfilling prophecy, by encouraging you and pushing you to your farthest limits until you reach the stars, or they can go just the opposite and break you down until you think nothing of yourself, and instil the thought of hopelessness. Either way you are raised has an effect on yourself and the way you perceive yourself, for example your father is an alcoholic and so was his father and your mother says your are going to be just like your father as your grow up hearing this over and over again it can make a huge impact bringing life to a self–fulfilling prophecy of your alcoholism. Or you could have a father that encourages you to learn new things, follow through set goals and reach them, he has higher ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

It 's called self–concept, it is one of the most influential parts of our personality it helps us create the present and future way we will act. One of the most common ways we do this is through the self–fulfilling prophecy. For this essay I became a guinea pig of sorts and experimented with this idea. Even before I took the rosenberg 's Self esteem test I knew for a fact that I suffer from low self esteem. My sever depression, anxiety and several psychologists can attest to that. I understand that I have full power over the way I feel about myself, sometimes i think that i use my mental illnesses as handicaps for my low self esteem. Because maybe we were wrong all along– maybe the game was never a–foot. Maybe it was a leg or an ankle. Thank ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Self Fulfilling Prophecy Summary Rosenthal and Jacobson's (1968) study on self–fulfilling prophecies focuses on the effects of teacher's expectations on their student's performance capabilities and the resulting outcome these implications have on the student's academic improvements. By falsely informing student's teachers of individual student's increased potential for knowledge growth at the beginning of the semester, they were able to study both the regular students and the students with supposed increased intelligence throughout the year to evaluate how the teacher's perception of these students could have impacted the student's academic behavior. While the independent variable in the study was the expectations the teachers had formed of the students, the dependent variable ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In a previous study, Rosenthal tested the effects of the self–fulfilling prophecy in a laboratory setting using rats that were divided into two groups; one supposedly bred to be bright and do well in the maze and a dull group expected to do worse in the maze. Children were then given one rat from either condition and were instructed to train their rat to complete the maze efficiently. Rosenthal found that the children's behaviors who were under the impression that their rat had been bred to be more intelligent, reflected their change in treatment towards the rats and resulted in the brighter rats performing better than the dull rats (Rosenthal & Jacobson, 1968). The ultimate purpose of the Rosenthal and Jacobson study was to measure the effects of advising the teachers which students would be more likely to have intelligence improvements or be "intelligence spurters" and evaluating the results that these expectancies had on those randomly chosen children including the children's IQ ... • 69. Essay on Self-fulfilling Prophecy More often than not, the outcomes of events that occur in a person's life is the product of the idea of the self–fulfilling prophecy. It is that which "occurs when a person's expectations of an event make the outcome more likely to occur than would otherwise have been true" (Adler and Towne, Looking Out, Looking In 66). Or restated, as Henry Ford once put it, "If you think you can, you can. If you think you can't, you're right!" This brief research paper touches on the two types of self–fulfilling prophecies, those that are self–imposed and those that are imposed by others. Additionally, it gives a discussion on how great of an influence it is in each person's life, both positively and negatively, and how it consequently helps to mold ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The point in this case is that realistic expectations play a great role in promoting positive and negative outcomes. But chances are, if he had a positive outlook, despite his ill preparedness, he stay may have received a higher failing grade. Nonetheless, Grigsby's examples are interesting and does a great job of portraying what occurs in an individual's mind when that person is projecting or making judgements of what outcome a certain event is going to yield. It is so because not only are they uncomplicated enough to visualize, but also because they are examples that one may even recall having done. The greater message in this sub–category is that this kind of thinking can and does play a large role in helping to determine how and what one feels during pre–conceived events and the reality that is borne from it. In the case of the person thinking he will not have a good time at the party he attends, he ends up not having it because he generated responses that contributed to that outcome (i.e. not socializing, criticizing the home, etc.). As for the student who performed well on his math test, he partly did so because of good preparation and knowledge and a realistic expectation that the other was lacking. Or as Adler and Towne put it: The self–fulfilling prophecy is an important force in interpersonal communication, but it doesn't explain or affect all behavior. There are certainly times when the expectation of an event's outcome won't bring it about. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 71. Character Analysis Of Sherlock Holmes "The game's afoot my dear Watson!" From Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's first brilliant series to BBC's modern day incarnation of the character, Sherlock Holmes has fascinated the world for centuries. Sherlock Holmes isn't a regular detective– he uses his amazing sense of deduction to "read" people. When Sherlock first meets Dr. John Watson, the first thing he asks is "Afghanistan or Iraq?" As Sherlock later explains, he had deduced by John's military service by the tan on his wrist and the part in his hair. From that moment, one of the most legendary literary friendships of all time was born.– homles and Watson– the perfect equilibrium. While Sherlock is cool, calculated, and analytical, John is a character we can all relate to– he's kind, he's ordinary, but most importatnly, he's human. Readers can't seem to believe Sherlock's amazing skills. These skills seem impossible, even unearthly. Believe it or not, we have the same skills, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The verdict is clear– a man covered in tattoos and piercings isn't the criminal, the fact that that was our first assumption is. Now we run into a problem as old as time itself– how do you lock up an idea? You can't. In regards to this problem, scientists would suggest putting different groups of people together in order to create cultural exposure. Sure, this might work, but to quote Dale Carnegie, an American author, "A man convinced against his will is of the same opinion still." Changing a person's views by force will accomplish nothing. There is no perfect, simple solution to this problem. It starts with us, individually. I know it seems overused and cliché to say "we can change the world one mind at a time." We hear that everyday; I think it's lost its meaning to us. The fact of the matter is, this isn't about changing the world all of a sudden. All it takes is to change one person. Because one person is all it takes to stop a vicious ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 73. Self Fulfilling Prophecy Paper Self–Fulfilling Prophecy is a concept developed by Robert K, Merton in 1948 to explain how a belief or expectation, whether correct or not, affects the outcome of a situation or the way a person (or group) will behave (The Colunbia Electronic Encyclopedia, 2015). Destiny Inquiries have been conducted to determine the career path for people of color. While the link has not been abundantly established there is a definite correlation between individual career goals and that of their parents. History tends to repeat itself and parents who are a part of a lower socioeconomic status raise children who further perpetuating the cycle. Self–fulling prophecy occurs when children limit their future due to the present in which they are a part of a systemic problem for people of color. A leading educational psychologist has identified a concept where people of color reject career fields in contrast to their images of self and/or their parents. The fear is that either the child or the parent will alienate ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Since their first record in 1933 when disapproving labels were affixed to people of color through today Caucasians have negative views of people of color. While the hatred has softened, some Caucasians still have the idea that people of color are destructive and ignorant. People of color are considered as a group who fails to act promptly, choosing to rely on public assistance instead of putting in the effort to change their circumstances. This stigma also prevents Caucasians from being open to the idea of living in mixed company with people of color. People of color are not void of pigeon–holing groups of people one being that the majority of Caucasians believe the ideas of the Ku Klux Klan. • 75. Self-Fulfilling Prophecy Definition Are you so in–tune with yourself that you know what is true, or are you assuming what is real based on that situation? There are millions of cases that humans mistake unknown falsehood for perceived truth. That's the idea of self–fulfilling prophecy; it is the assumption that causes itself to become true. Typically when I think of self–fulfilling prophecy, I imagine it being bad, because the individual is believing a false definition of a circumstance. However, positive consequences can derive from self–fulfilling prophecy. For example, if someone believes they will do well in an exam they will most likely receive a good grade. From my own experience, the more confidence I have in myself in preparation for an exam, the better I do on the test. When I have little confidence, I don't try as hard because I, "already know I will do poorly". Guess what? What I expected occurred. I convinced myself I would do poorly, so I did. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... I have had an enduring situation that I have been fighting to "switch" my self–fulfilling prophecy. My circumstance has been this: for years I have been telling myself I have a bad memory. I have declared that to be true of myself. Because of that, my natural tendency is to forget things easier or fail to attempt to remember (make excuses), thus making my consequences real. The more I believe the more I become, I am a part of the negative consequence. Now, I am trying to turn that negative to a positive. As I said before, self–fulfilling prophecy goes both ways. Rather than accept that I do not have a superior memory, I can tell myself that my memory can improve – that it is not bad. My hope is that will become true. It is the belief that I can improve and it is not horrible, that a real, positive, true consequence will ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 77. Peer Transmitted Culture (148) Peer transmitted culture is the theory that we only obtain a certain amount of influence of traits through our parents and we obtain a certain amount through our peers. The theory is basically saying as a kid in school we care more about what others think at school rather than what our families think. For a good example a teenagers family might not have anyone who smokes in it but if the teen was to hang out with kids who pick up the habit it could influence the teen into doing so to fit in with his or her peers. Almost like norms kids will adapt to what's accepted and not accepted in their culture. But lets say the individual is from another country where it's accepted to do one thing and not accepted here. The individual could be influenced ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
