How Does Rap Music Promote Violence
1. How Does Rap Music Promote Violence
The Effects of Music
Music is important to everybody, we all have that one song that makes us happy or sad just from
listening to one line in the song, but what if the song made you violent. Lyrics in music could be the
reason for violent tendencies in people's behavior. There have been studies shown that lyrics in some
music promote violence and crimes started because of musical influence. Through all genres of
music, if closely inspected, the lyrics show a hint of violence.
In fact, the police have even linked the rise of violence to music. In the article "Colorado Police
Link Rise in Violence to Music" the journalist Dan Frosch talks about how the police believe that
the rise in murder and shootings are contributed by the "gangsta" rap ... Show more content on

In rap music it's not hard to find the violent lyrics with most of the music speaks about gang
violence, shootings, drugs, and more. An example of a song that influences violence is J. Coles song
"A Tale of 2 Cities" with lyrics like "Picked up the paper and they say my nigga Eddie caught a
body, I'm convinced anybody is a killer, all you gotta do is push 'em to the limps" in this part of the
song Cole speaks about how his friend, who isn't really a person who would commit a crime,
murdered somebody; Cole isn't surprised because he believes everybody is a killer if you push them
to their limits. Another example in the song is "They robbin' niggas on the daily can you blame a
nigga that ain't never had things? Guess not last night they pulled up on my nigga at the light like
ugh, nice watch, run it" the first part of these lyrics Cole justifies the crime of robbing because they
have nothing. In the second part Cole states that somebody came up to his friend and robbed him of
his watch, on this part the sound of a gun being cocked in the background is heard and is continued
with the chorus saying "hands in the air now" (Genius). These lyrics not only promote violence but
justify why it was okay to do such crimes. The reasoning behind why artists talk about violence is
that it's a way of telling their story. Namir, a rapper in New York says "People have to realize that
rappers are just like any other artist or musician. What makes an artist an artist is his artistic
portrayal of his life and how he expresses his life through whatever art form that he does" (PBS).
With people growing up in terrible environments and music being a way for them to cope the
reasoning for the violent lyrics is the artist trying tell their

3. How Does Rap Music Affect Society
American Rappers have been perceived as artists who cannot do any good to society, because of
their lyrics or the music videos that they make, but that is only one small group of individual
rappers. Generalizing has never been a good thing, and that is exactly what these people do all the
time putting all rappers in the same category. How can some people be so ignorant and not
recognize the excellent music that has saved people from themselves? Out there right now there are
a lot of rappers that are always making beautiful music and this type of rap music has been made
since Hip–Hop's beginnings. Making people believe that rap music is the worst thing that has ever
happened just makes the society unknowledgeable and doesn't allow that the good rap music that
has already inspired a lot of people to overcome their adversities reach and help even more people.
Rap music has always been categorized like the music that makes youth act recklessly, and for that
reason rappers are often seen as just as bad influence and nothing else. Writer graduated of Stanford

country how difficult for them is to succeed. Lakeyta Bonnette says that "they are left with outlets

Black communities often are forgotten by the government and if it wasn't for the rap music, those
communities would have been unnoticed by the whole country too. Not to mention, rappers besides
being the voice for the black communities, they also donate money to those black communities to

9. How Rap Music Affects Society Essay
How Rap Music Affects Society
Rap music has the power to influence people in ways such as dictating fashion or wardrobe choices,
promote rebellious ways, and can even affect the morals you live by. The youth in America is highly
influenced by famous rap and hip hop artist due to the many relatable stories they tell in their music.
Many times the stories are speaking of hardships in life and crimes committed. Their lyrics are
significantly influential enough to have caused people to commit crimes such as robbery, violence,
and even murder.
According to Marvin D. Jones a University of Miami graduate and author of Fear of a Hip–hop
Planet: America 's New Dilemma, stated "Chicago youth Derrion Albert was brutally killed by gang
members, many blamed rap music...hip hop music has been demonized not merely as black noise
but as a root cause of crime and violence(Jones 59)." This provides a specific example of why and
how rap music has negatively impacted society, enough for them to kill a young man. He also states
that Gangsta rap, a type of rap music featuring aggressive lyrics, often with reference to gang
violence, is mostly considered "black noise". He uses this term to provide an illustration that
African–Americans are predominantly at the top of this rap violence.
Furthermore, rap music plays the role for urban youth in mainstream America. It has evolved
throughout the past three decades, in which rap fashion has changed along with it as well. Dating

Rap Music Rap music has never been seen as a positive artistry by the media, but maybe the media
is just doing what it always does and portrays everything with a poor opinion and rap music really
doesn't influence someone's behavior as much as the media would like you to think. Socially
everyone thinks that kids that listen to rap music are more prone to violence and abuse towards
women and that is how it has been looked at in our culture, when really it's not the actually listening
of the music than it is the rap videos themselves that portray the misogynistic views and create
misogynistic attitudes within the audience that lead to a more accepting view of violence against
women. Rap is stereotyped into a category that the only people that ... Show more content on

"Since culture is our shared reality, created and sustained through common experience, American
experience is now largely that which is shaped and maintained by the mass media... Violent music
lyrics have been shown to increase aggressive thoughts and feelings.... This creation of culture
through popular media was sadly exemplified recently when radio personality Don Imus referred to
a college women's basketball team as "nappy–headed ho's." Sadder still, many responded that the
racist and sexist language was acceptable because that type of language is used by minorities in rap
music. Unfortunately racist and sexist slurs influence real people, for example sending the message
to girls that this is how our society views them and causing issues with self esteem and identity."
(Karen Dill, 2013) As she said above the radio host described college basketball girls "nappy–
headed ho's" which would get any radio host now fired immediately without a second thought. Later
on in her article she explains how people believe that the media does not affect them, when in saying
that it still does. Karen list s five reasons why people misperceive that the media affects them:
"Person's natural tendency to reject the notion that our habits are harmful, a mistaken view of how
media effects work, that media are produced primarily to entertain us, that media do not affect the
viewer." She ends the writing with wise saying. Our country is expanding and granting more

in the Unites States. The issue revolves around the possible negative impact of rap music on young
minds, due to the use of profanity, reference to killing, sexually graphic verses, and inappropriate
videos that are common in such music. The problem is seen to be pervasive, and quite controversial,
receiving attention from researchers, academics, and parents who worry about how such music can
influence teens and impact their safety. Some believe that rap has had a positive influence on teens,
while others believe that it promotes violence (Jackson, 2015). This paper will attempt to explore the
link between music and human behavior in general, and then focus specifically on whether listening
to rap/hip–hop can be detrimental for adolescents. Music is a means of communication and leisure
that is consumed by and influences numerous individuals and households. People are exposed to
countless songs and genres on a daily basis through radio, television and streaming media.

Rap music over the years has embraced black talent and lead many people who lived troubled lives
into a life of fame and glory. The problem is as rap music has evolved, the lyrical content has been
highly focused around depicting negative images of the urban black community. It has turned from

women as prostitutes, selling drugs such as cocaine and heroine, using drugs to get by in life, and
spending excessive amounts of money on expensive cars and jewelry. Washington Informer writer,
Rudy Gourdine, brings up a good point when she states, "Can we overlook the targeting of young
Black women with mean spirited and derogatory words and images that often prevent them from

Currently, these two genres of music is most preferred by teenagers even though majority of the

way they dress, behave, and communicate. Hip hop has been proven by Lori Selke to make

behaviour. The author suggests that rap and moral character are linked and that due to the natural
context of rap, it promotes violence, crass materialism, crime, and is misogynistic and therefore
corrupts a person's moral character. Based on their claims, the authors take the position that rap
should be censured – morally. In this paper, I will examine the authors' claims, their reasoning, and

This claim may seem to be fine if it stood by itself. However, in this context, the author is saying

the authors are saying that they are bad. This claim is loaded and assumes that everyone who listens
to this type of music is bad because through the whole article, they talk about how rap disrupts
moral character and how it leads to bad things. This can also be classified as a hasty generalization.
This is a hasty generalization because the authors generalize beyond the limits of the population

The authors make another fallacious claim right after the hasty generalization claim. The claim

there have been second thoughts on the genre because of the artists using explicit language and
content in their lyrics. Rap artists have been heavily criticized musically, personally, and historically
by police, political activists, politicians, and even the everyday people for its explicit content. But, I
say that rap music is positive. "Devil Music and Gangsta Rap: A Comparison of Sexual Violence in
Blues and Rap Lyrics" by Edward G. Armstrong, he says rap is not the only genre known for
celebrating the transformative power of violence, he says blues music does too, because both blues
lyrics and rap dramaturgy are seen as insurrections of "subjugated sexualities" suggests that blues
music, because of its suicidal pessimism and a great sense of nihilism, may have played a key role in
the existence of gangsta rap and that both blues and rap music have similarities in terms of violent

37. The Pros And Cons Of Rap Music
What is rap music? Rap music is a type of music that is mostly listened to now in 2017. Some
people like and don't like rap music, but I'm my opinion I think it is the best genre of music in the
whole world. Rap music is good, and bad at some situations, but it also lets the rapper let out his
emotions in a type of way that is not violent to anything, or anybody. How is music good? In the
1990's NWA made a song called "F*** Tha Police". The song showed the groups feelings about
police brutality against African Americans. The song was hated by cops, and most whites. People in
America began to burn, and destroy the album that contained that song. But it also brought all
African Americans together, no matter gender, gang, not prefrence. At one point the whole group for
arrested for playing that song at a concert. The cops arrested the group because the cops told them
not to play that song anymore because it was causing riots against the cops when African Americans
realized how bad police brutality against their people really was. But that song hopefully knocked
some sense into cops to make them realize that blacks were the exact same as whites. It made a
difference in the world because of how police brutality was used against African Americans and it
basically stopped when NWA made a song about how they felt about it. Another reason is how rap
makes people feel and how certain rap songs make you feel relaxed, hyped up, sad, happy, etc. Next,
rap music changed the world because it shows people truth about the world it doesn't sugar coat
what is really happening in the world, it doesn't make it seen fantasized, it has truth. Lastly, rap
music has a purpose being an actual genre, it isn't just somebody singing a song and trying to tap the
fastest, they do rap really fast sometimes but it is just part of rap music. Rap music is not just a
bunch of rappers trying to rap really fast, and just speak about Alcohal, Drugs, Money, and Girls.
They rap about the truth of the world, basically like how Alcohal, Money, Drugs and Girls are used.
Even though some of the rappers use the drugs the same way. But most Americans don't realize why
rappers get paid so much money, they don't get so much money just

39. Evolution Of Rap During The 80's
The evolution of rap during the 80's, 90's and 2000's until now. Introduction: What is rap? Rap is
defined in the dictionary as: "a style of popular music, developed by disc jockeys and urban blacks
in the late 1970s, in which an insistent, recurring beat pattern provides the background and
counterpoint for rapid, slangy, and often boastful rhyming patter glibly intoned by a vocalist or
vocalists." Which implies that rap is defined by its fast, narcissistic, aggressive, and rhyming lyrics.
Simply said rap is talking slightly faster than usual often accompanied by music. Rap originated in
ghettos where youth had to deal with gangs, drugs, murders, rape, and racial profiling by the police.
This is why rap lyrics are often about violence, drugs, money and sex, which was very controversial
and often protested by parents and politicians. In this assignment I will research and discuss the
origins and development of rap on a 30–year timeline, as well as the surrounding controversy and
internal conflicts of the rap industry. Motivation: ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Rappers have evolved over the years, managing to create more complex songs and have complex

striking difference between 1990's rap music and modern day songs is the lyrics." Old rap lyrics
were relatively simple, the beat was simple and flow of rhythm was simple.people labeled this type
of rap music as "Old School". But rap lyrics evolved, becoming what people now refer to as, "New

controversial verses in their songs, especially Eminem, who was labeled the King of Controversy for
his time(History of Rap Music). In modern rap songs, most songs, if you take a look at the lyrics,

Music plays a massive role in shaping people's perception. Rap culture has grown extensively and
influenced people vastly to the point that it sets trends that emphasizes on curvier bodies or bigger

to a better tomorrow, there are still challenges like the entertainment playing a huge role in shaping
the minds of adolescents today who will be our future tomorrow. One of the problems that rap
music, especially 'Gangsta Rap' creates is to mislead the society by portraying women in an
unpleasant way leading young men to behave or treat the women negatively. In this proposal, I will
show the results of an experiment on how men who are exposed to this genre have changed their

many rappers live. The Washington Post would support my research by showing that a popular Fox
News political commentator Bill O' Reilly tries to blame rap music every change he has to feed the
public with lies to turn people against rap and have an outlet to put the load on to make rap music
look as if there is a bad guy for global issues. Using Robert Tinajero article to counter argue with the

Also using Childs report to point out the rappers that come to urban schools and promote a positive
movement for the kids to have a leader or someone to look up because of broken homes when the
mother or father is no more in their lives. I will also use questions on why do the media target rap

music industry. Popular artists like LL Cool J, Tupac, Notorious B. I. G., Jay–Z, Kanye West, and
many others produce, or have produced, millions of hip–hop records. The secret to the success of
hip hop centers around its explicit content and disregard for censorship. Because of this, many
people attempt to imitate or recreate the music that hip hop inspires. Hip hop raises a plethora of
ideas, such as what true effects does hip hop have on the people that listen to it? A greater question

Jay–Z's "December 4th" was the first song on his Black Album, which was released in 2003, during
one of the many peaks in the rapper's career. The song includes his mother talking about his
childhood in–between verses and is a very autobiographical song in the sense that he talks about his
life up until he formed the persona that is Jay–Z. Although "December 4th" is thought to have been
about the rappers's presumed retirement, the song does not allude to an end to his rap career,
instead, the "December 4th" is about the artist 's transition from Shawn Carter to Jay–Z. He tells the
story, not of the end, but of the beginning of Jay–Z and he does this by separating himself from his
former self, Shawn Carter; examining the importance that Carter played in the story of how Jay–Z
was born and continues to live. This song is very indicative of a speaker who is narrating and
advising his former self and showing the importance of accepting and how one came to be. The song
begins almost as a confessional, telling his audience about the decisions and choices he made
leading up to the creation of 'Jay–Z'. When he says, "I'm leaving after this song/ So you ain't gotta
feel no way about Jay so long/ At least let me tell you why I'm this way," the rapper is letting his
audience know that this song is about his life and the aspects of his upbringing that lead him to his

Through out the lives of the emotionally damaged rappers there was usually a story to every one of
the songs produced. Usually containing a background story, sometimes in form of prayer because
the people that explain this, do not know in what other form to pray to God. Some may say that such

very concerned with the way society was being governed. Believing that the law had turned numb
towards the minorities' situation. Tupac began to think and contemplate. Tupac went through many
hard dealing situations as well, thus coming back to why rappers feel as if the voice inside is silent
and have no other way to be heard of. Music has been a greatly part of the "rappers" life allowing to
express and talk through stories within the lives of one another. Not just to society but also to God.
The form of prayer the rapper's pertain is just a call for someone to hear and act. "There should be a

Thankfully, Dr. Brookter caught the error and I fixed it. While the rest see Hip–Hop/Rap music as a
black music genre that talks about money and women. But through the eyes of Rap fans and artists
alike, Rap stands for Rhythm and Poetry. It craved a tapestry of exposing social issues that America
would never shed light on. This will ensure everybody that "Hip–Hop/Rap is for everyone."
Throughout this survey, my educated guess on the students is whenever they listen to Hip–Hop/Rap
music, it is based on how they perceive and interpret the music because most students find ways to
use Rap to express themselves. Whether the students use the music for relaxation, workouts, or
school, Rap music is for everyone who wants to hear it. But, in the survey, WCU student surveyors
say collegians listen to Rap through popularity. I realized that at WCU, college students that listen to
Rap music are split into two listening categories: lyrically and musically. Those that listen to Rap are
interested in it for the sound while the others listen to the music itself. Rap reinvented the world of

began to evolve from party songs to socially conscious songs. Through the 90s, Rap reached
commercial status through the movies, clothes, and television. Yet, the music has faced obscurity for

Next,
rap music changed the
