The American Dream By John D. Rockefeller Essay
Americans Dream Big
America is known as the land of opportunities where even a person with an impoverished
background can live the American Dream. The fancy cars, huge mansions, top fashion clothes, and
luxurious trips don't come easy. In order to achieve financial success you must work hard, overcome
unforeseen hardships, and be "hungry" enough for it.
Many ordinary people have managed to be become extraordinary. It's quite inspiring to know that
from a person who was once homeless to a struggling paycheck to paycheck person are now one of
the wealthiest Americans.
The following people managed to live The American Dream despite their limited financial
capabilities and the numerous obstacles they endured. One of the first most successful business
mogul, Jonny Rockefeller achieved tremendous financial success. "The New Tycoons: John D.
Rockefeller" He became one of America's first billionaire. As a capitalist his goal was to make
money. He envisioned himself as one of the richest person in America. Becoming a billionaire
wasn't something that was handed to him on a silver platter. "10 People Living the American
Dream" Growing up he was one of six children. His mother raised him mostly single–handedly. He
held various jobs to help support his family. Eventually his brother and him ventured in the oil
business and monopolized the industry.
"10 People Living the American Dream" CEO, John Paul Dejoria, co–founder of the John Paul

Creative Writing: Not Guilty
[Not] Guilty
I stand in front of the mirror, glowering at my oily black hair. I hold a comb in one hand and a
clump of the stringy mass in another. I've been trying to get this knot out for ten minutes.
I sigh. Just more proof that my life is a disaster – I can't even keep my hair combed.
Feeling defeated, I slink over to the chair and slump onto it. I didn't even bother trying to cover up
my everlasting bruises today. Maybe if Dad hadn't–
Stop.
"Daddy, don't leave me!" I mock my five–year–old self bitterly. Tossing my hair, I add, "I don't need

What twinge of hurt?

Two someones, actually.
I doubt I'll ever realize the power of that fully. For now, I'm just thankful.
And guess what? I got that clump out of my hair at last. It's the little things sometimes, right? Here's
a big thing for you, too. I've even forgiven my dad, as hard as that was. What happened to make me
so bitter towards him in the beginning? Well, that's another story for another time. I even visited him
one day after church, and gave him the very Bible that helped me so much. Turns out he's in the cell
next to the Prince.
Who knew, right?
I smile to myself as I imagine the look on my dad's face as I handed him the Bible and told him I
forgave him. His smile had literally stretched from ear to ear, and the bags under his eyes seemed to
go away for a time. A new light shone in his eyes, as well – a light that I pray is someday made more
radiant by the love of the Savior.
When I look back on all that has happened, I am thankful for my two symbols of freedom. One is
physical freedom, and one is spiritual freedom.
And this time, I won't deny the bolt of joy that shoots through me.

A Short Story : A Story?
Those people were muttering indecipherable words and communicating in strange gibberish. They
were dressed in tribal wear and with them they carried ancient weapons. The weaponry was rather
rare to be manipulated in 2013. Then, suddenly, the group of people had disappeared too, and the
Kiethers had no sight of either of them. At this point, the Kiethers were lost and had no source of
navigation. Luckily, an elderly man approached the family and pointed them in a direction toward a
secret path. The path contained many hazards and became narrow as the distance from the start
widened. It looked as though he were trying to direct them to a safe place. Their hearts were
trembling with fear, so they followed the man through the mountains. What they did not know was
that the man was the only one who knew how to combat the curse; he just needed to find the right
candidate to complete the job for him. The elderly man had lived in a secret location for decades and
stayed hidden when the evil spirits poisoned everyone. Of the victims that were subject to harsh
treatment and internal poisoning, one was able to escape..., and it was him. Just like Joe, Laura, and
the kids, he was a foreigner too when he visited the mountainous region about thirty years ago.
Farther into their walk, the vapor pressure outside increased. The air became dense and the dark
clouds began to form over their heads this time. In no time, fog permeated the air and spirits roamed
freely. Joe had been only a couple

John Lennon's Influence On American Culture
The Beatles– does the name ring a bell? "All You Need is Love", "Hey Jude"? The four members,
Paul McCartney, George Harrison, Ringo Starr, and John Lennon were idolized and known all
around the world. Everywhere they went they were huge influences with everything they said and
did. From the time of formation of the English rock band The Beatles in 1960 up until his
assassination on December 8th, 1980, John Lennon was a tremendous influence to society as an
antiwar activist and a musical legend.
John Lennon had always been a "hardcore hippy" while he was part of The Beatles, however, after
their breakup in 1970 and his marriage to Yoko Ono, peace and helping fight against the Vietnam
War became his main focus. He'd explored many religions, but decided love, peace and music were
what he put his whole heart into. His lyrics were his feelings and his beliefs. In 1975, Lennon's

with Lennon's guidance. Mitchell informed the president, who at the time was Richard Nixon, that
the activist would greatly harm his chances of being re–elected with his conservative beliefs, his
aggressive fight against the drug war, and Lennon's ability to donate large amounts of money to
rallies. (1) As the only solution the president and his advisors could create, the attempt to deport
John Lennon began. For four entire years, the Immigration and Naturalization services tried and
tried to deport him. The only crime they could use against him was a previous drug arrest on
October 18th, 1968. After these four years, the fight to rid Lennon of the States was overturned
October 7th of 1975 by the US Court of Appeals and Lennon's residency in Manhattan was made
permanent the following year.

The Importance Of Realism In The Film The King Of Kong
In the film, The King of Kong, realist aesthetics are used to give the audience a view of the real
world and create the deeper meaning that if something doesn't look like it is real than it is ultimately
flawed and inaccurate. Compared to this, formalist aesthetics that are used in the film, Wreck–It–
Ralph, are not only utilized to present a whole new world that is exaggerated visually, but to
primarily produce a vision that creates a deeper meaning and tone that is far from realistic.
The cinematography that is being displayed in the film, The King of Kong, is what is known as deep
focus cinematography. In the documentary, there are many instances where there is a lot of space in
front of the camera, consisting of space and people, that is in clear focus and only partially distorted
in some areas that are mainly difficult to identify. The foreground, middle–ground, and background
will all be in crisp focus. For example, when Steve Wiebe is playing Donkey Kong at Funspot, Steve
is presented clearly in the foreground as well as the many people and gaming consoles in the
middle–ground and background. This type of cinematography is used to present to the audience
something that they can essentially relate to on a personal and real level. Each part of the image is in
focus to give off the notion that everything that is being seen is like what is seen in a real–world
situation. On the other hand, expressive cinematography is what is utilized in the film, Wreck–It–
Ralph. This type of cinematography is characterized by using fast or slow motion, whether it be with
an object or person. When a person or object in the film is sped up it is usually in order to represent
a lapse of a large amount of time. For example, when Ralph is talking about the new games that
appear over time in the arcade, the people and gaming consoles speed up and alter with the lapse of
time. Opposite of this is when time and space are slowed down. For instance, when Felix saves
Sergeant Calhoun and himself from dying in the Nesquik–Sand they in turn gaze into each other's
eyes. Slow motion is used in this instance to intensify built up romantic emotions and of course
expand time. This type of cinematography is used to give the audience

Themes Of Greed In Adam Mitchell's Cloud Atlas
Cloud Atlas is a book composed of six different writings from a multitude of writers such as Adam
Ewing, Cavendish, Sonmi, and Frobisher. These stories are written in a different time period but
show a lot of the same ideals and themes. There are many themes that present themselves in cloud
atlas but the one that appealed to me most was greed. Mitchell did a very good job in showing greed
in each of the chapters in a variety of different ways whether it was a minimal or large amount. In
addition, the author also related both the future and the past to the current time to show what is
arguably the worst characteristic one can have. I believe that Mitchell chose the theme of greed to
show that all humans will do nearly anything to satisfy their personal needs and wants. While
reading Cloud Atlas I realized that there is at least minimal traces of greed in each writing. The
writing of Adam Ewing, Luisa Rey, Sonmi 451, and Cavendish expressed the most greed out of the
six.
The first chapter of the book opens up with Adam Ewing's journal. At first he writes about the
strange man named Dr. Goose and picking up teeth on the beach. Although Ewing was a bit
skeptical of Goose at first, it seemed that they became closer as the book progressed until a
particular situation. Later, Adam writes about when Dr. Goose and himself walked up on a whipping
of a particular slave names Autua who comes in later into the story and ends up being a very
important character when saving Adam's life.

The Evolution Of The 1960s ' Protest Song
The evolution of the 1960s "protest song" has typically been associated with Joni Mitchell, but the
expanding range of protest songs in the 1970s defines her continued presence as a leader in terms of
environmental activism. More than just a vestige of the late 1960s, Mitchell continued to write
protest songs long after many other artists from the 1960s had changed their lyrical content. In the
"mellow turn" of early 1970s country rock and folk music, Mitchell represented a new
environmental shift that moved away from the proto–typical antiwar songs of the 1960s. Mitchell,
along with other musicians of this era, defined a shifting musical focus on songwriting and musical
presentation during the early 1970as:
The early to mid 1970s would become known for a mellow turn toward country rock, production
heavy supergroups, and envieronmental songs like "Big Yellow Taxi" (1970). Even the Beach Boys
took their turn at envieronmental critique, releasing "Don't Go Near the Water" in 1971 (Weglarz
xviii).
In this musical critique, the "soft rock" appeal of Mitchell's song represented a shift away from the
hard rock sound of the 1960s, but with the gritty directness of lyrics that challenged the chemical
pollution of DDT usage in modern farming techniques. The hard edge of envieronmental critiques
was certain "masked" by the gentle nature of Mitchell's voice, but the reality of chemical
engineering as a threat to the environment is interjected through her flowing melodic structures:

Prince Rogers Nelson Biography
Prince Rogers Nelson, the artist known as Prince who Thursday became "formerly" with a
devastating finality at only 57, was so gifted it barely can be believed, let alone described.
Thankfully, it hardly needs to be, because anyone who wasn't frightened off by his flagrancies and
ambiguities could tell that this was a talent of the kind that rearranges what culture can do and what
a human can be–the kind possessed, for instance, by two artists who predeceased him, his
contemporary Michael Jackson and his elder by a dozen years David Bowie, and a very short list of
other figures in pop–music history.
He was one of the finest ever pop singers, one of the most incredible guitarists (the anecdote in
which Eric Clapton once replied to the question "What's it like to be the greatest guitarist alive?" by
saying "I don't know, ask Prince" is probably apocryphal but, on a higher plane, definitely correct),
and one of the most indelible songwriters, most influential producers, best wearers (and removers)
of clothing, and most electric semiotic manipulators.

What Is The Theme Of Lady Lazarus
Opening Sentences... Widely considered her most celebrated book of poems, the posthumous Ariel
exposes Plath's twisted physiological torment. Perhaps its most well known work, "Lady Lazarus"
unambiguously examines suicide and death. It cloaks its reader in the solitude that weighs so heavily
on its author. In this poem, Plath alludes to Lazarus, a man who Jesus resurrects from the dead. Plath
is in fact the female foil to this biblical figure, and through the chaos and loneliness her husband,
father, and friends cultivate, they ultimately drive her to suicide. However, despite her attempts, the
poet unfailingly rises from her deathbed to confront an increasingly harsher world. Similar to Plath,
singer–songwriter Joni Mitchell introduces themes ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In doing so, she describes what she feels might be the catalyst to the pair's true happiness: wrecked
stockings, knitted sweaters, and shampooed hair. Though simple, they could make her feel "alive,
alive." The free willing and bubbly nature of the song ends with the recognition that "the greed is the
unraveling...and it undoes all the joy that could be." Despite her endeavors and a fictitious blissful
relationship, the two are designed to fail together as evidenced by Mitchell's question "do you
see...how you hurt me baby" and her subsequent realization that "I hurt you too/Then we both get so
blue." Moreover, Mitchell heightens the unstable affair with her assertion, "oh I hate you some, I
hate you some, I love you some/Oh I love you when I forget about me." However, these epiphanies
do not absolve her love. Mitchell's self–awareness is essential to understanding her particular
predicament. While some are ignorant to the fact that they are captive in an abusive or harmful
relationship, whether physical or psychological, Mitchell is acutely conscious in her own. Yet, she is
incapable of evading it; moreover, in order to thrive within it, she must neglect own needs, and
accordingly reciprocate that harm. While fantasy does not deceive the reckless women, this volatile
relationship draws her in as part of her continues to believe that her wants are possible, that the two

My Fear Of Thunders And Thunder
My fear of thunders and lightning
It is truly fascinating how children experience and overcome many fears as they are growing up and
learning whether or not something is scary. Astraphobia, otherwise known as the Phobia (fear) of
anything related to lightning and thunder, is one of them. It undoubtedly is one of the most
complicated things I have ever had to defeat. I obviously was afraid of lightning, but I realized how
ridiculous and even pathetic it could be for me. Being among my friends, leaving them and start
looking for a place where I could feel more comfortable and safer (a sort of shelter). Sometimes
hiding underneath a bed, covering my ears and even crying because acting like that is not logical to
those who have no phobia, I felt like abandoned. All of that because of something that occurs within
the clouds, far away. Overcoming a phobia of something can magically increase your self–
confidence. Sometimes, it is what others think about us that makes us to think about changing. "Do
not fear," my father always said. "Before your teenage years, it will be gone." And he was right.
According to 'fearof.net', most cases of excessive fear of thunder, lightning gradually diminish over
the years"; but my case seemed to be particular. One of my most effective remedy against this fright,
which had so many times made me feel ridiculous towards

The Effectiveness of The Mitchell College of Business...

resource center having its own focus, the guidelines to a distinguished resource center can remain
the same but the focus being different. Business resource centers have a list of guidelines to what
makes one effective which can include space, affordability, counseling and education. The Mitchell
College of Business Learning Resource Center can be seen as effective with its view in these four
areas. To illustrate the Mitchell College of Business Learning Resource Center's effectiveness, one
has to first look at the space accommodation. The Learning Resource Center can be divided into

The counseling services provided through the librarians and the group studies with other students
helps to bring stability when searching for pertinent information in certain areas. Other business
research centers tend to have these same services, some on much larger scales when dealing with
vast amounts of information in different field studies and focuses in business. The benefit of the
Learning Research Center is that it is a part of a college which helps the students focus on a specific
study through their classes and help with the education part of the Learning Resource Center. For
instance, having information is a key to learning but without the knowledge to use that information
it is useless. Classes with a study into a specific field help to disperse information into different
groups of studies helping to alleviate trivial information determined by that specific field. In other
words, studying one field in business can help to address what information is needed when
researching and what information is not needed. The Mitchell College of Business and the Learning
Research Center work hand in hand to accomplish this understanding. Some business research
centers might lack this but have other substitutions for this service or might have a much bigger
operation in terms of classes but this is another feature that affects the affordability. In the end, when
doing a full evaluation based off the four different criteria to make a business research center

Billy Mitchell Leadership Analysis
Billy Mitchell: A Critical Analysis of His Leadership
Billy Mitchell was a visionary airpower pioneer who demonstrated very effective leadership in field
operations, but his inability to develop a guiding coalition limited his effectiveness in leading the
major organizational change he so desperately desired.
General Mitchell was a famous, some would say infamous, airpower thinker who some regard as the
father of the United States Air Force.1 Born into a wealthy family and the son of a Wisconsin
Senator, Mitchell could have chosen a life of luxury. But Billy sought great adventure and chose the
military life instead. He joined the Army at the age of eighteen, six years before the Wright brothers
made their first historic flight ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Mitchell's personality was well suited for leadership in a field environment. He was able to
effectively utilize the coercive, authoritative, and pacesetting leadership styles that, according to
leadership research, were well suited for executing his vision in stressful environments with highly
motivated men.8 He engendered high levels of trust from those who worked under him and gained
the respect of those who worked by his side, including the British, French, and Italian allied
leadership.9
Relevance, the apex of the RTL model, is a direct result of a leader's influence and occurs at the
organizational, environmental, and personal levels.10 Mitchell showed relevance in all of these
areas. First, from an environmental perspective, he brought together multiple organizations, air
forces from Britain, Italy, and the United States, and integrated their personnel and equipment into a
viable fighting force, which culminated in "the greatest concentration of air power that had ever
taken place."11 He had high organizational relevance, changing the persona of his combined force
from one solely focused on

Rise Of American Theaters And Consumerist Desires
Rise of American Theaters And Consumerist Desires In the early twentieth century movies signified
modernity by becoming the most prevalent medium of culture in the United States in a period of
time where the social makeup was shifting from a predominantly middle class to working class
neighborhoods that were made up of many different communities. As a direct consequence,
nickelodeons, temporary storefront theaters, and vaudeville programs all flourished in the working
class districts. By the late 1920s, almost every large American city showed off a new "picture
palace," an elaborately constructed movie theater. Moreover, with this transition from previous
vaudeville houses and nickelodeons to the rise of these so–called picture palaces in the United
States, new spaces of consumerism were forged that focused on enlightening the average spectator
as movie moguls such as the notable Samuel "Roxy" Rotahfel who envisioned a specific function
for all major theaters. Consequently, I would argue that these new spaces of consumerism
transformed and transfixed its audiences architecturally (looking at the physical space of the theater)
and psychologically (reading space as consumerist fantasy) in Roxy's picture palaces such as the
Family Theater and the Regent Theater and how these theaters fit into the market of mass
consumerism in creating desire as well as a release from modern societal pressures. Additionally, I

The Beatles were an English Rock band formed in the 60s with John Lennon, Paul McCartney,
George Harrison, and Ringo Starr. They became one of the greatest and most influential acts of the
rock era. The Beatles played around with different types of genres. They experimented with a little
bit of everything, Pop ballads, Indian music and Hard rock. They even used some Classical
elements. In the early 60s, their fame was known as "Beatlemania", but as the group grew, Lennon
and McCartney mostly led it. The Beatles had an idea shared by the "Era's Sociocultural

Their trip to America succeeded unlike any other British pop star. " The reputation that was out there
in Great Britain was that you can't make it in America. They just want to listen to a different kind of
music," said Michael Cheney, Professor of Communications and Economics at University of
Illinois. The day that the Beatles had luck was perfect timing for them; many see the Beatles as the
light at the end of the tunnel. Why? Well, when they arrived to America, it was a couple of months
after the JFK assassination, the Cuban missile crisis and global tensions over the Berlin wall. The
greatest impact was the assassination because on that same day in the U.K, their second album
"With The Beatles" released. For Americans at that point there was one crisis after the other. On
February 9th 1964, the Beatles performed on " The Ed Sullivan Show" It set records. There were an
estimated 73 million Americans that tuned in to watch their performance. It was not just their music
that made them so special, but also the way they carried themselves and the way they interacted with
the media. According to Gould, the Beatles changed the way people listened to popular music and
experienced it's role in their lives. The groups' popularity grew into what was seen as an
"embodiment of sociocultural movements of the decade." According to Peter Lavezzoli, after the "
more popular than Jesus" controversy in 1966, the Beatles felt the pressure to set the right things and

Dr. David Burns 's The Feeling Good Handbook
Is your thought life making you ill? Mental health experts argee that it can. In fact, some ideas can
ruin you life.
Psychiatrist and educator, Dr. Aaron Temkin Beck (the father of Cognitive Emotive Therapy), first
proposed that false ideas could actually damage mental health. Dr. David Burns popularized this
notion in his book, The Feeling Good Handbook: Techniques and Exercises to Help Cope with
Depression without Drugs, a classic work in the field of mental health.
Though developed by Temkin in the 1960s, Cognitive Emotive Therapy has only grown in influence
within the mental health field during the past half century. Its therapies have become common tools
in the clinical treatment of depression and have been used by clinicians to address criminal behavior.
The first article in this issue of Watchmen, "Assumption Busting," explores how faulty assumptions
can make our problem solving ineffective. Cognitive Emotive Therapy makes a broader claim.
Mistaken ideas can actually ruin our lives and health with bad decisions. Put another way, faulty (or
irrational) thinking makes us ill, but rational thinking restores our mental health and social balance.
According to Cognitive Therapy, our reasoning can fall into typical irrational "traps." These traps
are automatic ways in which we have trained ourselves to misinterpret our experience. As a result,
we base our actions on faulty ideas that lead to bad choices.
The thinking "traps" listed below are among those Dr.

Clouds in which "Both sides, now" was included. Again, Mitchell re–recorded the song in a lush,
orchestrated fashion for her 2000 album Both Sides. Notably, the Judy Collins version of the song
reached number 8 on the U.S. pop singles charts by December and number 6 in Canada. "Both Sides

Midway through the 2nd verse, Collins uses the conjunction 'but' to indicate another downward–
spiraling verse. She sings "but now it's just another show/ You leave 'em laughin when you go"(17–

critic. The rest of the song continues to convey the same message but uses more personal and
realistic tales that continue to rhyme; for example, the 2nd verse illustrates a warm summer night at
a fair in the 1960s while the 1st verse used an abstract approach by mentioning clouds blocking the
light. Similarly, the 3rd verse is more relatable than the 2nd verse and shows a more personal touch
in which the songwriter mentions that she used to express her emotions freely, but was critiqued by
others. The song ends with the

Great Gatsby Song Analysis Essay
Song #1 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X9fLbfzCqWw
http://www.azlyrics.com/lyrics/yellowcard/oceanavenue.html The song "Yellowcard" by Ocean
Avenue is a song that talks about a past relationship. The singer wishes to go back in time to the
time that they were together so that his life could improve. This is shown by the lyrics "If I could
find you now things would get better" and "I know somewhere, somehow we'll be together". This
song relates well to "The Great Gatsby" as the singer's aspirations to enjoy life by reliving the past
or similar to Gatsby's aspiration to relive his past with Daisy. Gatsby believes that Daisy is
everything that he will ever need and that with her he will attain eternal happiness. The green light
represents the dream of obtaining Daisy. Gatsby reaches towards this light at the end of chapter one
as if he is trying to reach towards the past. Both Gatsby and the singer of "Yellowcard" both want to
achieve happiness by relieving the past with their former lovers. Song #2

Film "Stagecoach" Analysis Essay
Stagecoach: The Revolutionary Western
John Ford built a standard that many future directors would follow with his classic 1939 film
"Stagecoach". Although there were a plethora of western films made before 1939, the film
"Stagecoach" revolutionized the western genre by elevating the genre from a "B" film into a more
serious genre. The film challenged not only western stereotypes but also class divisions in society.
Utilizing specific aspects of mise–en–scène and cinematography, John Ford displays his views of
society. The film consists of many cliché western characters. There is a banker, an outlaw, a
prostitute, a doctor, a gambler, and a pregnant woman. These characters are categorized by social
class. The banker, the pregnant ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Doc Boone is not taken seriously and considered a fool because he is always drunk. Dallas is always
forgotten and all the attention is given to Mallory. In a scene where the stagecoach is headed
towards Apache Wells in the cold, Hatfield's facial expressions show that he is worried and
concerned whenever he looks at Lucy Mallory. Hatfield, being a gentleman, offers Lucy Mallory
water and serves water to her in a fancy silver cup but does not bother to ask Dallas. However,
Ringo Kid makes sure Dallas also gets a drink of water. This demonstrates that even though Hatfield
is considered a gentleman, he does not show any concern for Dallas because she has a lower social
status. Once the stagecoach arrives in Lordsburg, Lucy Mallory is carried out on a stretcher. At first,
the camera shot is wide–angled and the street is crowded with soldiers and civilians. Then there is a
close–up shot of Mallory on the stretcher as she speaks to Dallas. The shot reveals Mallory's facial
expression of remorse. Mallory looks apologetic and offers any help to Dallas. This is one of the
final scenes in the film and illustrates how Mallory's view of Dallas completely changed by the
resolution of the film. Throughout the film, Mallory felt uncomfortable being around Dallas. Once
Dallas helped take care of Mallory's baby, Mallory realized that her judgment of Dallas was
completely wrong.

The Role of Adult Basic and Literacy Education Essay
The Role of Adult Basic and Literacy Education
With the passage of the 1988 Family Support Act (FSA), adult basic and literacy education was
linked to welfare reform. Based on experimentation with welfare reform during the previous decade,
the FSA created the Job Opportunities and Basic Skills Training Program (JOBS). JOBS, which
requires states to make educational services available to welfare recipients, was created in response
to the general consensus that welfare recipients are not well prepared to enter the work force (Cohen
et al. 1994). One of its major underlying assumptions is "that a strong foundation of literacy and
basic skills is critical to the successful transition to employment and self–sufficiency for AFDC ...

Some of this research is based on experiments with welfare–to–work programs leading up to the
FSA (e.g., California's Greater Avenues for Independence [GAIN] program), but much of it deals
directly with the experiences of providing adult basic and literacy education to JOBS participants.
This Practice Application Briefreviews some of these research findings and describes their
implications for practice.
What Does the Research Say?
Evaluation studies of employment and training programs, including the Comprehensive
Employment and Training Act (CETA), the Job Training Partnership Act (JTPA), and JOBS, are one
body of research that can inform practice. This research has been conducted over the past 20 years
primarily on demonstration programs designed to improve the basic skills and employability of
disadvantaged adults. A synthesis (Cohen et al. 1994) of this research resulted in the following
conclusions that have a bearing on the role of adult basic and literacy education in welfare–to–work
programs:
Because they use traditional pedagogical approaches for which many adults have little tolerance,
adult basic and literacy education programs have experienced difficulty attracting and retaining
participants. Furthermore, many low–skilled adults see no connection between this traditional
approach and their primary goal of getting a

Summary Of The King Of Kong : Fistful Of Quarters
Aesthetics in Cinema
Aesthetics help contribute to make a movie more enjoyable. Breaking it down, there are a few types
of aesthetics that can be observed, including formalist and realistic aesthetics. The film The King of
Kong: Fistful of Quarters uses realistic aesthetics, such as on camera interview, Text/data on screen,
real mise–en–scene, and existing footage to make up the movie. On the other hand. Wreck–It Ralph
uses formalist aesthetics like expressive mise–en–scene and expressive editing throughout the film.
Looking at The King of Kong: Fistful of Quarters, we can see the first aspect used is the on–camera
interview. The opening shot of this movie is an interview of the World Champion Donkey Kong
player. The film itself has multiple interviews with different people. Most of the film is footage from
the interviews. The directors take time to interview the World Champion, the challenger, the referee,
other world champions of other games, and the families of the competitors. The interviews gave the
audience a sense of who the person was and gave us some background information on their skill and
how they came to like the game. Given the interviews, we were able to gain extra information about
the gamers that we might not have been able to see from just watching them play the game.
Additionally, it would be hard to make a movie about the Donkey Kong Champion without making
it a documentary full of interviews. The interviews conducted informed the audience on the

Most of my family was born and raised in Sinaloa, Mexico. They were born in a ranch called "La

me believe in the virgen de guadalupe. She is the mother of Jesus Christ. Mostly every year On
December 12 my family and me go to church to celebrate her. They bring music to sing to her. It is
always beautiful. On this day we also celebrate my birthday. I am so grateful to be born on this day.
As I was saying in the second paragraph, since my parents are mexican they taught me spanish.
Being bilingual for me is so important because I get to help others. At school there are times are a
lot of times I make new friends just by translating things for them. I am glad I am latina because I
know that it will help me in the future some way. There are some things I like doing with others
which are movies and sports. I have always liked watching movies. I don't really mind what kind of

THE EVENT: Our group organized a science event titled "Nap15", a word play on the mathematical

key message of a fifteen–minute optimal powernap time, which yielded recuperative effects without

participants (Bultitude & Sardo, 2012). Atmosphere plays an important role in marketing, and a cosy
ambience helps to make people feel at ease and more receptive (Kotler, 1973).
On the actual day of the event, I was part of the Advertising and Recruiting Team, where were
dressed up in pyjamas and approached passers–by to answer a short question and visit our booth to

EFFECTIVE SCIENCE COMMUNICATION:
Effective science communication is essential because it allows scientists to communicate important
knowledge and beneficial findings in a clear, easily understood way to the masses (Burns, O
'Connor, & Stocklmayer, 2003). When scientists are able to translate technical jargon into plain
language for non–experts, they are able to dispel myths incorrect beliefs more effectively and
convincingly. This would increase erudition and quality of life in society as a whole, as people are
able to make sound, informed decisions. (Aguinis, Pierce, Bosco, Dalton, & Dalton, 2011)

A Case Study : Joni Mitchell
A Case of You
Born on November 7th, 1943, in Fort Macleod, Canada, Joni Mitchell was quick to success. "After
teaching herself how to play the guitar, she went off to art college and quickly emerged as one of the
leading folk performers of the late 1960s and '70s." ("Joni Mitchell"). Some of her most notable
songs include "Big Yellow Taxi", "Both Sides Now", and "A Case of You". "A Case of You" is
arguably her most successful song. It was written in 1970 and later released on her album, Blue, in
1971. It has been covered by a multitude of artists and given her outrageous success in this music
industry. She was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1997, and the Canadian
Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2007. She released her nineteenth, and final studio album, Shine, in
2007 which was her first album in nearly a decade. Since then, she has been battling a long line of
ongoing heath issues. She contracted polio at the age of nine and has sought treatment for
Morgellons disease. Additionally, in 2015 she suffered from an aneurysm, but has since then made a
full recovery and is said to be living comfortably on her own. What seems to separate Joni Mitchell
from other folk artists of her time is her use of instrumentals. Her use of specific instruments is what
allows her songs to be very vocally driven, as the instrumentals tend to be very soft. For example, in
"A Case of You", she used an Appalachian Dulcimer as the forefront instrument. On the recorded

She had "memorized the sky and was sure of her observation." (Gromley p.55) This was the great
discovery that her constant vigilance brought into the open, as she saw a comet of unknown origin.
It occurred to her that this might be a comet. Maria recorded the presumed comet's coordinates. The
next night the star moved again. This time she was sure it was a comet. Her father wrote to Professor
William Bond at the Harvard University observatory about Maria's discovery. Professor Bond
submitted Maria's name to the king of Denmark who had offered a gold medal to a person who

Analysis Of Concepts In The Hundred Dresss By Eleanor Estes
We all had something when we were younger that put the spotlight on us as children. Whether it was
an unusual last name, big ears, or funny freckles there was something that made us insecure or self–
conscious. I can remember being made fun of for my last name "Hartung". Kids used to ask me if
my tongue was a heart and I would begrudgingly answer saying that Hartung actually meant royalty
in German, which was a lie but it was what my parents told me to say. In "The Hundred Dresses",
Eleanor Estes illustrates these concepts that still hold true today because no matter how time goes on
children will always be made fun of for ailments they cannot help. She explains how putting others
down due to things that are out of their control, such as a funny last name like "Hartung", will never
make you feel better about yourself. Eleanor Estes goes on to show how you should stand up for
people because being a bystander makes you part of the problem, something that adults and kids
alike struggle with today. Lastly, she shows how everyone is unique and although there may be
something a little different about someone that does not mean they do not have other talents that
make them special in the best way possible.
Whenever someone feels unsure of themselves their first reaction typically is to attack those around
them in an effort put themselves on a pedestal maybe this is why Maddie never stood up for Wanda.

The novel Inanna, jointly written by Diane Wolkstein and Samuel Noah Kramer, includes gender
equality manifested epics written by Enheduanna, the "world's first author known by name" (Mark.
2014.). Homer's epic, The Iliad, postdates the texts of Inanna by 1,500 years; however, the increase
of time does not correlate directly with an increase of parity. Instead, surmounting several years
resulted in a regression of equivalence pertaining to genders. Women in The Iliad are portrayed as
either possessions and trophies, or as embodiments of temptations for which men can neither resist
nor be held responsible for if they are successfully enticed. Written between the time of 600 BCE
and 400 BCE, about two centuries after The Iliad, Tao Te Ching incorporates several instances
throughout its text showing high regards to femininity and mothering. Following Tao Te Ching also
by approximately 200 years, The Bhagavad Gita provides the concept that all souls are genderless
and therefore have the same opportunities to reach a supreme destination of finally ending the cycle
of reincarnation making it equally attainable between sexes. These

Notes On Vanilla Interest Rate Swaps
Introduction
VANILLA INTEREST RATE SWAPS
It is estimated that about 75% of American companies use derivatives. The main risk remains that
most companies do not monitor their position frequently (Operational) and only few really
understand the instruments (Intellectual). Moreover, as an off–balance–sheet item it reduces the
public awareness of such items (accounting). This is the first case that there was a ruling by a judge
for derivative instruments. P&G had to pay only $35 million out of the $175 expected losses.
P&G, a leader in cosmetics, infant products, and grocery industries, offered almost 250 products to 5
billion consumers in 130 countries (Procter & Gamble, Form 10–K 2–3 (1998)).
Liquidating the two contracts cost the company $157 million which is one of the largest losses
incurred for an American company. In comparison , Metallgesellschaft AG lost 1.36 billion in oil
futures. The downside risks involved in these contracts are not fully understood, even by
sophisticated investors.
Chronology
August 1993: As the maturity of an interest rate swap approached what P&G had paid, that is an
interest rate approximately equal to CP Federal Funds Rate – 0.40%, P&G relied on BT for a swap
contract replacing the interest rate swap in order to maintain BT's financing structure. Although BT
proposed a swap contract similar to the previous swap structure, P&G refused on account of its
inconsistency with P&G's risk factors. (Jongho Kim, "Lesson From Modern Debacles".)

The Power Of Literacy In Jimmy Santiago Baaca's Coming...
Jimmy Santiago Baca's "Coming into Language" displays a dark, yet uplifting view of the power of
literacy. From his beginning in the hospital, toward the end during his imprisonment, Baca moves
from the mindset of a rebellious teenager to a poetic adult. Through vivid descriptions, metaphors,
the appeal to the audience's emotions, and Baca sets up a transformational framework to show how
literacy can be a way of escape. Baca's story seeks to explain a point of view that one is more likely
to become incarcerated and to struggle in life if he is uneducated. "I wrote to sublimate my rage,
from a place where all hope is gone, from a madness of having been damaged too much, from a
silence of killing rage" (Baca).
In his writing, Baca uses word pictures to show a side of despair in his life that eventually leads to a
positive change where he now has hope. The beginning is filled with scenarios of him working in an
emergency room "mopping up pools of blood and carting plastic bags stuffed with arms, legs and
hands to the outdoor incinerator" (Baca), then moves on to detailed descriptions of his times spent
incarcerated, and how the detectives treat an intoxicated man. "His shrill screams raked my nerves
like a hacksaw on bone, the desperate protest of his dignity against their inhumanity."(Baca) The
wording he uses describes a vivid, violent, and at times beautiful view. Throughout the narrative,
Baca builds an explanation of the circumstances he is in, and builds a visual where

Barnes Center for Enlisted Education [BCEE], 2016a). He stood by their solution and it not only
showed loyalty, but that he valued their intellect and judgment, and he was willing to take risks
based on their input (BCEE, 2016a). General Mitchell subordinates, World War I ace Eddie
Rickenbacker, future American generals Hap Arnold and Major Carl "Tooey" Spaatz testified on his
behalf at his court marshal by arguing for leader's decision to support their ideas so forcibly.
(DeSantis , 2016). This proved that he had he had their loyalty from valuing their judgment and
supporting their ideas. General Mitchell also failed to use emotional flexibility when he encountered
resistance to change. General Mitchell was determined to implement his changes but unfortunately,
he verbally attacked his superiors in the War and Navy departments (Godbey, 2016). He called them
nearsighted regarding the need for wartime airpower and questioned their judgment (Godbey, 2016).
This action proves that General Mitchell lacked emotional flexibility. Emotional flexibility is the
ability to change how you deal with your own and others' emotions and an emotionally flexible
leader is comfortable with the process of change,

  • 1. The American Dream By John D. Rockefeller Essay Americans Dream Big America is known as the land of opportunities where even a person with an impoverished background can live the American Dream. The fancy cars, huge mansions, top fashion clothes, and luxurious trips don't come easy. In order to achieve financial success you must work hard, overcome unforeseen hardships, and be "hungry" enough for it. Many ordinary people have managed to be become extraordinary. It's quite inspiring to know that from a person who was once homeless to a struggling paycheck to paycheck person are now one of the wealthiest Americans. The following people managed to live The American Dream despite their limited financial capabilities and the numerous obstacles they endured. One of the first most successful business mogul, Jonny Rockefeller achieved tremendous financial success. "The New Tycoons: John D. Rockefeller" He became one of America's first billionaire. As a capitalist his goal was to make money. He envisioned himself as one of the richest person in America. Becoming a billionaire wasn't something that was handed to him on a silver platter. "10 People Living the American Dream" Growing up he was one of six children. His mother raised him mostly single–handedly. He held various jobs to help support his family. Eventually his brother and him ventured in the oil business and monopolized the industry. • 3. Creative Writing: Not Guilty [Not] Guilty I stand in front of the mirror, glowering at my oily black hair. I hold a comb in one hand and a clump of the stringy mass in another. I've been trying to get this knot out for ten minutes. I sigh. Just more proof that my life is a disaster – I can't even keep my hair combed. Feeling defeated, I slink over to the chair and slump onto it. I didn't even bother trying to cover up my everlasting bruises today. Maybe if Dad hadn't– Stop. "Daddy, don't leave me!" I mock my five–year–old self bitterly. Tossing my hair, I add, "I don't need him anymore." What twinge of hurt? Standing up, I toss my cash, newly swiped, onto my bed. Well, my sleeping bag. I can't afford to hire a moving company once a week. I move around a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Two someones, actually. I doubt I'll ever realize the power of that fully. For now, I'm just thankful. And guess what? I got that clump out of my hair at last. It's the little things sometimes, right? Here's a big thing for you, too. I've even forgiven my dad, as hard as that was. What happened to make me so bitter towards him in the beginning? Well, that's another story for another time. I even visited him one day after church, and gave him the very Bible that helped me so much. Turns out he's in the cell next to the Prince. Who knew, right? I smile to myself as I imagine the look on my dad's face as I handed him the Bible and told him I forgave him. His smile had literally stretched from ear to ear, and the bags under his eyes seemed to go away for a time. A new light shone in his eyes, as well – a light that I pray is someday made more radiant by the love of the Savior.

  • 6. A Short Story : A Story? Those people were muttering indecipherable words and communicating in strange gibberish. They were dressed in tribal wear and with them they carried ancient weapons. The weaponry was rather rare to be manipulated in 2013. Then, suddenly, the group of people had disappeared too, and the Kiethers had no sight of either of them. At this point, the Kiethers were lost and had no source of navigation. Luckily, an elderly man approached the family and pointed them in a direction toward a secret path. The path contained many hazards and became narrow as the distance from the start widened. It looked as though he were trying to direct them to a safe place. Their hearts were trembling with fear, so they followed the man through the mountains. What they did not know was that the man was the only one who knew how to combat the curse; he just needed to find the right candidate to complete the job for him. The elderly man had lived in a secret location for decades and stayed hidden when the evil spirits poisoned everyone. Of the victims that were subject to harsh treatment and internal poisoning, one was able to escape..., and it was him. Just like Joe, Laura, and the kids, he was a foreigner too when he visited the mountainous region about thirty years ago. Farther into their walk, the vapor pressure outside increased. The air became dense and the dark clouds began to form over their heads this time. In no time, fog permeated the air and spirits roamed freely. Joe had been only a couple ... • 8. John Lennon's Influence On American Culture The Beatles– does the name ring a bell? "All You Need is Love", "Hey Jude"? The four members, Paul McCartney, George Harrison, Ringo Starr, and John Lennon were idolized and known all around the world. Everywhere they went they were huge influences with everything they said and did. From the time of formation of the English rock band The Beatles in 1960 up until his assassination on December 8th, 1980, John Lennon was a tremendous influence to society as an antiwar activist and a musical legend. John Lennon had always been a "hardcore hippy" while he was part of The Beatles, however, after their breakup in 1970 and his marriage to Yoko Ono, peace and helping fight against the Vietnam War became his main focus. He'd explored many religions, but decided love, peace and music were what he put his whole heart into. His lyrics were his feelings and his beliefs. In 1975, Lennon's single 'Imagine' ... Mitchell informed the president, who at the time was Richard Nixon, that the activist would greatly harm his chances of being re–elected with his conservative beliefs, his aggressive fight against the drug war, and Lennon's ability to donate large amounts of money to rallies. (1) As the only solution the president and his advisors could create, the attempt to deport John Lennon began. For four entire years, the Immigration and Naturalization services tried and tried to deport him. The only crime they could use against him was a previous drug arrest on October 18th, 1968. After these four years, the fight to rid Lennon of the States was overturned October 7th of 1975 by the US Court of Appeals and Lennon's residency in Manhattan was made permanent the following year. ... • 12. The Importance Of Realism In The Film The King Of Kong In the film, The King of Kong, realist aesthetics are used to give the audience a view of the real world and create the deeper meaning that if something doesn't look like it is real than it is ultimately flawed and inaccurate. Compared to this, formalist aesthetics that are used in the film, Wreck–It– Ralph, are not only utilized to present a whole new world that is exaggerated visually, but to primarily produce a vision that creates a deeper meaning and tone that is far from realistic. The cinematography that is being displayed in the film, The King of Kong, is what is known as deep focus cinematography. In the documentary, there are many instances where there is a lot of space in front of the camera, consisting of space and people, that is in clear focus and only partially distorted in some areas that are mainly difficult to identify. The foreground, middle–ground, and background will all be in crisp focus. For example, when Steve Wiebe is playing Donkey Kong at Funspot, Steve is presented clearly in the foreground as well as the many people and gaming consoles in the middle–ground and background. This type of cinematography is used to present to the audience something that they can essentially relate to on a personal and real level. Each part of the image is in focus to give off the notion that everything that is being seen is like what is seen in a real–world situation. On the other hand, expressive cinematography is what is utilized in the film, Wreck–It– Ralph. This type of cinematography is characterized by using fast or slow motion, whether it be with an object or person. When a person or object in the film is sped up it is usually in order to represent a lapse of a large amount of time. For example, when Ralph is talking about the new games that appear over time in the arcade, the people and gaming consoles speed up and alter with the lapse of time. Opposite of this is when time and space are slowed down. For instance, when Felix saves Sergeant Calhoun and himself from dying in the Nesquik–Sand they in turn gaze into each other's eyes. Slow motion is used in this instance to intensify built up romantic emotions and of course expand time. This type of cinematography is used to give the audience ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 14. Themes Of Greed In Adam Mitchell's Cloud Atlas Cloud Atlas is a book composed of six different writings from a multitude of writers such as Adam Ewing, Cavendish, Sonmi, and Frobisher. These stories are written in a different time period but show a lot of the same ideals and themes. There are many themes that present themselves in cloud atlas but the one that appealed to me most was greed. Mitchell did a very good job in showing greed in each of the chapters in a variety of different ways whether it was a minimal or large amount. In addition, the author also related both the future and the past to the current time to show what is arguably the worst characteristic one can have. I believe that Mitchell chose the theme of greed to show that all humans will do nearly anything to satisfy their personal needs and wants. While reading Cloud Atlas I realized that there is at least minimal traces of greed in each writing. The writing of Adam Ewing, Luisa Rey, Sonmi 451, and Cavendish expressed the most greed out of the six. The first chapter of the book opens up with Adam Ewing's journal. At first he writes about the strange man named Dr. Goose and picking up teeth on the beach. Although Ewing was a bit skeptical of Goose at first, it seemed that they became closer as the book progressed until a particular situation. Later, Adam writes about when Dr. Goose and himself walked up on a whipping of a particular slave names Autua who comes in later into the story and ends up being a very important character when saving Adam's life. ... • 16. The Evolution Of The 1960s ' Protest Song The evolution of the 1960s "protest song" has typically been associated with Joni Mitchell, but the expanding range of protest songs in the 1970s defines her continued presence as a leader in terms of environmental activism. More than just a vestige of the late 1960s, Mitchell continued to write protest songs long after many other artists from the 1960s had changed their lyrical content. In the "mellow turn" of early 1970s country rock and folk music, Mitchell represented a new environmental shift that moved away from the proto–typical antiwar songs of the 1960s. Mitchell, along with other musicians of this era, defined a shifting musical focus on songwriting and musical presentation during the early 1970as: The early to mid 1970s would become known for a mellow turn toward country rock, production heavy supergroups, and envieronmental songs like "Big Yellow Taxi" (1970). Even the Beach Boys took their turn at envieronmental critique, releasing "Don't Go Near the Water" in 1971 (Weglarz xviii). In this musical critique, the "soft rock" appeal of Mitchell's song represented a shift away from the hard rock sound of the 1960s, but with the gritty directness of lyrics that challenged the chemical pollution of DDT usage in modern farming techniques. The hard edge of envieronmental critiques was certain "masked" by the gentle nature of Mitchell's voice, but the reality of chemical engineering as a threat to the environment is interjected through her flowing melodic structures: ... • 18. Prince Rogers Nelson Biography Prince Rogers Nelson, the artist known as Prince who Thursday became "formerly" with a devastating finality at only 57, was so gifted it barely can be believed, let alone described. Thankfully, it hardly needs to be, because anyone who wasn't frightened off by his flagrancies and ambiguities could tell that this was a talent of the kind that rearranges what culture can do and what a human can be–the kind possessed, for instance, by two artists who predeceased him, his contemporary Michael Jackson and his elder by a dozen years David Bowie, and a very short list of other figures in pop–music history. He was one of the finest ever pop singers, one of the most incredible guitarists (the anecdote in which Eric Clapton once replied to the question "What's it like to be the greatest guitarist alive?" by saying "I don't know, ask Prince" is probably apocryphal but, on a higher plane, definitely correct), and one of the most indelible songwriters, most influential producers, best wearers (and removers) of clothing, and most electric semiotic manipulators. • 20. What Is The Theme Of Lady Lazarus Opening Sentences... Widely considered her most celebrated book of poems, the posthumous Ariel exposes Plath's twisted physiological torment. Perhaps its most well known work, "Lady Lazarus" unambiguously examines suicide and death. It cloaks its reader in the solitude that weighs so heavily on its author. In this poem, Plath alludes to Lazarus, a man who Jesus resurrects from the dead. Plath is in fact the female foil to this biblical figure, and through the chaos and loneliness her husband, father, and friends cultivate, they ultimately drive her to suicide. However, despite her attempts, the poet unfailingly rises from her deathbed to confront an increasingly harsher world. Similar to Plath, singer–songwriter Joni Mitchell introduces themes ... Though simple, they could make her feel "alive, alive." The free willing and bubbly nature of the song ends with the recognition that "the greed is the unraveling...and it undoes all the joy that could be." Despite her endeavors and a fictitious blissful relationship, the two are designed to fail together as evidenced by Mitchell's question "do you see...how you hurt me baby" and her subsequent realization that "I hurt you too/Then we both get so blue." Moreover, Mitchell heightens the unstable affair with her assertion, "oh I hate you some, I hate you some, I love you some/Oh I love you when I forget about me." However, these epiphanies do not absolve her love. Mitchell's self–awareness is essential to understanding her particular predicament. While some are ignorant to the fact that they are captive in an abusive or harmful relationship, whether physical or psychological, Mitchell is acutely conscious in her own. Yet, she is incapable of evading it; moreover, in order to thrive within it, she must neglect own needs, and accordingly reciprocate that harm. While fantasy does not deceive the reckless women, this volatile relationship draws her in as part of her continues to believe that her wants are possible, that the two could eventually "feel free" ... My Fear Of Thunders And Thunder My fear of thunders and lightning It is truly fascinating how children experience and overcome many fears as they are growing up and learning whether or not something is scary. Astraphobia, otherwise known as the Phobia (fear) of anything related to lightning and thunder, is one of them. It undoubtedly is one of the most complicated things I have ever had to defeat. I obviously was afraid of lightning, but I realized how ridiculous and even pathetic it could be for me. Being among my friends, leaving them and start looking for a place where I could feel more comfortable and safer (a sort of shelter). Sometimes hiding underneath a bed, covering my ears and even crying because acting like that is not logical to those who have no phobia, I felt like abandoned. All of that because of something that occurs within the clouds, far away. Overcoming a phobia of something can magically increase your self– confidence. Sometimes, it is what others think about us that makes us to think about changing. "Do not fear," my father always said. "Before your teenage years, it will be gone." And he was right. According to 'fearof.net', most cases of excessive fear of thunder, lightning gradually diminish over the years"; but my case seemed to be particular. The Mitchell College of Business Learning Resource Center can be seen as effective with its view in these four areas. The benefit of the Learning Research Center is that it is a part of a college which helps the students focus on a specific study through their classes and help with the education part of the Learning Resource Center. For instance, having information is a key to learning but without the knowledge to use that information it is useless. Classes with a study into a specific field help to disperse information into different groups of studies helping to alleviate trivial information determined by that specific field. In other words, studying one field in business can help to address what information is needed when researching and what information is not needed. The Mitchell College of Business and the Learning Research Center work hand in hand to accomplish this understanding. Billy Mitchell Leadership Analysis Billy Mitchell: A Critical Analysis of His Leadership Billy Mitchell was a visionary airpower pioneer who demonstrated very effective leadership in field operations, but his inability to develop a guiding coalition limited his effectiveness in leading the major organizational change he so desperately desired. General Mitchell was a famous, some would say infamous, airpower thinker who some regard as the father of the United States Air Force.1 Born into a wealthy family and the son of a Wisconsin Senator, Mitchell could have chosen a life of luxury. First, from an environmental perspective, he brought together multiple organizations, air forces from Britain, Italy, and the United States, and integrated their personnel and equipment into a viable fighting force, which culminated in "the greatest concentration of air power that had ever taken place."11 He had high organizational relevance, changing the persona of his combined force from one solely focused on ... Rise Of American Theaters And Consumerist Desires Rise of American Theaters And Consumerist Desires In the early twentieth century movies signified modernity by becoming the most prevalent medium of culture in the United States in a period of time where the social makeup was shifting from a predominantly middle class to working class neighborhoods that were made up of many different communities. As a direct consequence, nickelodeons, temporary storefront theaters, and vaudeville programs all flourished in the working class districts. By the late 1920s, almost every large American city showed off a new "picture palace," an elaborately constructed movie theater. Moreover, with this transition from previous vaudeville houses and nickelodeons to the rise of these so–called picture palaces in the United States, new spaces of consumerism were forged that focused on enlightening the average spectator as movie moguls such as the notable Samuel "Roxy" Rotahfel who envisioned a specific function for all major theaters. Consequently, I would argue that these new spaces of consumerism transformed and transfixed its audiences architecturally (looking at the physical space of the theater) and psychologically (reading space as consumerist fantasy) in Roxy's picture palaces such as the Family Theater and the Regent Theater and how these theaters fit into the market of mass consumerism in creating desire as well as a release from modern societal pressures. English Rock Band: The Beatles Gabriela A Rodriguez Prof. Mitchell Terri Mul2380 October 30, 2015 What you'd want to know about The Beatles The Beatles were an English Rock band formed in the 60s with John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison, and Ringo Starr. They became one of the greatest and most influential acts of the rock era. The Beatles played around with different types of genres. They experimented with a little bit of everything, Pop ballads, Indian music and Hard rock. They even used some Classical elements. In the early 60s, their fame was known as "Beatlemania", but as the group grew, Lennon and McCartney mostly led it. The Beatles had an idea shared by the "Era's Sociocultural Revolutions" which was the Counterculture of the 1960's. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Their trip to America succeeded unlike any other British pop star. " The reputation that was out there in Great Britain was that you can't make it in America. They just want to listen to a different kind of music," said Michael Cheney, Professor of Communications and Economics at University of Illinois. The day that the Beatles had luck was perfect timing for them; many see the Beatles as the light at the end of the tunnel. Why? Well, when they arrived to America, it was a couple of months after the JFK assassination, the Cuban missile crisis and global tensions over the Berlin wall. The greatest impact was the assassination because on that same day in the U.K, their second album "With The Beatles" released. For Americans at that point there was one crisis after the other. On February 9th 1964, the Beatles performed on " The Ed Sullivan Show" It set records. There were an estimated 73 million Americans that tuned in to watch their performance. It was not just their music that made them so special, but also the way they carried themselves and the way they interacted with the media. According to Gould, the Beatles changed the way people listened to popular music and experienced it's role in their lives. The groups' popularity grew into what was seen as an "embodiment of sociocultural movements of the decade." According to Peter Lavezzoli, after the " more popular than Jesus" controversy in 1966, the Beatles felt the pressure to set the right things and "began a concerted effort to spread a message of wisdom and higher ... Psychiatrist and educator, Dr. Aaron Temkin Beck (the father of Cognitive Emotive Therapy), first proposed that false ideas could actually damage mental health. Dr. David Burns popularized this notion in his book, The Feeling Good Handbook: Techniques and Exercises to Help Cope with Depression without Drugs, a classic work in the field of mental health. Though developed by Temkin in the 1960s, Cognitive Emotive Therapy has only grown in influence within the mental health field during the past half century. Its therapies have become common tools in the clinical treatment of depression and have been used by clinicians to address criminal behavior. The first article in this issue of Watchmen, "Assumption Busting," explores how faulty assumptions can make our problem solving ineffective. Cognitive Emotive Therapy makes a broader claim. Mistaken ideas can actually ruin our lives and health with bad decisions. Put another way, faulty (or irrational) thinking makes us ill, but rational thinking restores our mental health and social balance. According to Cognitive Therapy, our reasoning can fall into typical irrational "traps." These traps are automatic ways in which we have trained ourselves to misinterpret our experience. As a result, we base our actions on faulty ideas that lead to bad choices. The thinking "traps" listed below are among those Dr. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The singer wishes to go back in time to the time that they were together so that his life could improve. Gatsby believes that Daisy is everything that he will ever need and that with her he will attain eternal happiness. The green light represents the dream of obtaining Daisy. The film challenged not only western stereotypes but also class divisions in society. Utilizing specific aspects of mise–en–scène and cinematography, John Ford displays his views of society. Hatfield, being a gentleman, offers Lucy Mallory water and serves water to her in a fancy silver cup but does not bother to ask Dallas. • 60. Our Group Organized A Science Event THE EVENT: Our group organized a science event titled "Nap15", a word play on the mathematical notation of 'power'. Our objective was to dispel and debunk the myth that any duration of a powernap is beneficial for increasing productivity and alertness. Instead, we sought to establish a key message of a fifteen–minute optimal powernap time, which yielded recuperative effects without any detrimental side–effects (Hayashi, Motoyoshi, & Hori, 2005).Our target audience was current university students at the University of Western Australia (UWA) who are about to sit for the end– of–semester examinations. I, together with a few other classmates, was involved in planning and brainstorming ideas during the pre–event stage. We were in charge of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... We also wanted to exude an informal, cosy ambiance at our booth. Hence we came up with the idea of bringing cushions, pillows and inflatable mattresses for visitors to play with and sit on, complete with background music. Having interactive activities has been shown to increase satisfaction in participants (Bultitude & Sardo, 2012). Atmosphere plays an important role in marketing, and a cosy ambience helps to make people feel at ease and more receptive (Kotler, 1973). On the actual day of the event, I was part of the Advertising and Recruiting Team, where were dressed up in pyjamas and approached passers–by to answer a short question and visit our booth to try our crossword puzzle challenge and find out more about power napping. I managed to bring in about 20 people to our booth. EFFECTIVE SCIENCE COMMUNICATION: Effective science communication is essential because it allows scientists to communicate important knowledge and beneficial findings in a clear, easily understood way to the masses (Burns, O 'Connor, & Stocklmayer, 2003). When scientists are able to translate technical jargon into plain language for non–experts, they are able to dispel myths incorrect beliefs more effectively and convincingly. This would increase erudition and quality of life in society as a whole, as people are able to make sound, informed decisions. (Aguinis, Pierce, Bosco, Dalton, & Dalton, 2011) Good science ... When I looked down into the water it was no longer blue the reflection became unilluminated almost like a pool of blood. Looking into the sky was no longer it's usually color the clouds seemed to have disappeared, not a single trace of stars were in sight to lighten up my mood. The only object emerging was the intense yellow full moon behind the darkness. As I sat at the edge my feet were dangling along with my dark long hair. Anxiety formed within me while walking to the cafeteria. Everyday something was doomed to happen. Today actually marks the first day of me making it through the cafeteria without food being thrown at me. The last incident that occurred, mashed potatoes were thrown at me and hit my face everyone in the cafeteria laughed at me. "Haha, you big fat potato!!" The teens would call me. Humiliation would take over and tears began to form in my eyes. Looking around felt as if I were hallucinating the loud laughs turned into hyena laughs the eyes of my enemies were dark as the night and the aroma of food turned into the smell of dead flesh. The room became crepuscular and the faster I ran to the door the further it became. The safest place nearby was was the cliff, but on the way, there was a secret place I would call paradise of the great souls. The only place that felt judgemental free, it's where my journal and cigarettes were kept. Nobody knew of my presence here and that was the greatest part. When arriving everything was still in place. I sat down on the big grey rock, it was smooth enough to not hurt my bottom. I pulled out my packed Newport shorts and began patting them in the palm of my hand and pulled one out. Lighting my cigarette I began to inhale and exhale the smoke and listened to the bird's chirp and the calming sounds of the water. • 64. A Case Study : Joni Mitchell A Case of You Born on November 7th, 1943, in Fort Macleod, Canada, Joni Mitchell was quick to success. "After teaching herself how to play the guitar, she went off to art college and quickly emerged as one of the leading folk performers of the late 1960s and '70s." ("Joni Mitchell"). Some of her most notable songs include "Big Yellow Taxi", "Both Sides Now", and "A Case of You". "A Case of You" is arguably her most successful song. It was written in 1970 and later released on her album, Blue, in 1971. It has been covered by a multitude of artists and given her outrageous success in this music industry. She was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1997, and the Canadian Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2007. She released her nineteenth, and final studio album, Shine, in 2007 which was her first album in nearly a decade. Since then, she has been battling a long line of ongoing heath issues. She contracted polio at the age of nine and has sought treatment for Morgellons disease. Additionally, in 2015 she suffered from an aneurysm, but has since then made a full recovery and is said to be living comfortably on her own. What seems to separate Joni Mitchell from other folk artists of her time is her use of instrumentals. Her use of specific instruments is what allows her songs to be very vocally driven, as the instrumentals tend to be very soft. For example, in "A Case of You", she used an Appalachian Dulcimer as the forefront instrument. On the recorded version of this ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 68. Maria Mitchell Essay This paper will discuss the life of Maria Mitchell and how she became the first woman astronomer in the United States. It will tell of where she grew up. How she climbed the ranks to achieve her goals and how she came into discovering her true passion of astronomy. By describing the events that made this courageous woman, we can see clearly how she set an example for her gender in the Nineteenth century. Women have always been at the forefronts of science, even though they have not always taken the credit for it. One of the defining marks of humanity is our ability to affect and predict our environment. She had "memorized the sky and was sure of her observation." (Gromley p.55) This was the great discovery that her constant vigilance brought into the open, as she saw a comet of unknown origin. It occurred to her that this might be a comet. Maria recorded the presumed comet's coordinates. The next night the star moved again. This time she was sure it was a comet. Her father wrote to Professor William Bond at the Harvard University observatory about Maria's discovery. Professor Bond submitted Maria's name to the king of Denmark who had offered a gold medal to a person who discovers a comet seen only through a telescope. Another person, "Father Francesco de Vico of Rome discovered the same comet two days later" (Mitchell p.105) than Maria Mitchell and the decision was made to award him the prize before news of Maria's earlier discovery arrived in Europe. After some negotiations Maria Mitchell was awarded the medal for this discovery a year later. The comet was named "Miss Mitchell's Comet." She continued working as a librarian, but now she was also receiving letters of congratulations from scientists and tourists were coming to take a look at the woman astronomer. In 1848 the American Academy of Arts and Sciences voted her the first woman member. The Association for the Advancement of Science did the same in 1850. • 70. Analysis Of Concepts In The Hundred Dresss By Eleanor Estes We all had something when we were younger that put the spotlight on us as children. Whether it was an unusual last name, big ears, or funny freckles there was something that made us insecure or self– conscious. I can remember being made fun of for my last name "Hartung". Kids used to ask me if my tongue was a heart and I would begrudgingly answer saying that Hartung actually meant royalty in German, which was a lie but it was what my parents told me to say. In "The Hundred Dresses", Eleanor Estes illustrates these concepts that still hold true today because no matter how time goes on children will always be made fun of for ailments they cannot help. She explains how putting others down due to things that are out of their control, such as a funny last name like "Hartung", will never make you feel better about yourself. Eleanor Estes goes on to show how you should stand up for people because being a bystander makes you part of the problem, something that adults and kids alike struggle with today. Lastly, she shows how everyone is unique and although there may be something a little different about someone that does not mean they do not have other talents that make them special in the best way possible. Whenever someone feels unsure of themselves their first reaction typically is to attack those around them in an effort put themselves on a pedestal maybe this is why Maddie never stood up for Wanda. Maddie herself was poor so it was easy to let others make fun of Wanda because ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 72. Sexism : A Continuation From Civilizations Past? Essay Sexism: A Continuation From Civilizations Past? Sexism today, is entirely engrained in our culture. It is so extremely prevalent that some people deeply dispute its integrated continuation from civilizations a millenia ago into our civilizations today. But, is sexism really a continuation from civilizations past? I do not believe that to be true. The novel Inanna, jointly written by Diane Wolkstein and Samuel Noah Kramer, includes gender equality manifested epics written by Enheduanna, the "world's first author known by name" (Mark. 2014.). Homer's epic, The Iliad, postdates the texts of Inanna by 1,500 years; however, the increase of time does not correlate directly with an increase of parity. Instead, surmounting several years resulted in a regression of equivalence pertaining to genders. Women in The Iliad are portrayed as either possessions and trophies, or as embodiments of temptations for which men can neither resist nor be held responsible for if they are successfully enticed. Written between the time of 600 BCE and 400 BCE, about two centuries after The Iliad, Tao Te Ching incorporates several instances throughout its text showing high regards to femininity and mothering. Following Tao Te Ching also by approximately 200 years, The Bhagavad Gita provides the concept that all souls are genderless and therefore have the same opportunities to reach a supreme destination of finally ending the cycle of reincarnation making it equally attainable between sexes. • 74. Notes On Vanilla Interest Rate Swaps Introduction VANILLA INTEREST RATE SWAPS It is estimated that about 75% of American companies use derivatives. The main risk remains that most companies do not monitor their position frequently (Operational) and only few really understand the instruments (Intellectual). Moreover, as an off–balance–sheet item it reduces the public awareness of such items (accounting). This is the first case that there was a ruling by a judge for derivative instruments. P&G had to pay only $35 million out of the $175 expected losses. P&G, a leader in cosmetics, infant products, and grocery industries, offered almost 250 products to 5 billion consumers in 130 countries (Procter & Gamble, Form 10–K 2–3 (1998)). Liquidating the two contracts cost the company $157 million which is one of the largest losses incurred for an American company. In comparison , Metallgesellschaft AG lost 1.36 billion in oil futures. The downside risks involved in these contracts are not fully understood, even by sophisticated investors. Chronology August 1993: As the maturity of an interest rate swap approached what P&G had paid, that is an interest rate approximately equal to CP Federal Funds Rate – 0.40%, P&G relied on BT for a swap contract replacing the interest rate swap in order to maintain BT's financing structure. Although BT proposed a swap contract similar to the previous swap structure, P&G refused on account of its inconsistency with P&G's risk factors. (Jongho Kim, "Lesson From Modern Debacles".) ... • 76. The Power Of Literacy In Jimmy Santiago Baaca's Coming... Jimmy Santiago Baca's "Coming into Language" displays a dark, yet uplifting view of the power of literacy. From his beginning in the hospital, toward the end during his imprisonment, Baca moves from the mindset of a rebellious teenager to a poetic adult. Through vivid descriptions, metaphors, the appeal to the audience's emotions, and Baca sets up a transformational framework to show how literacy can be a way of escape. Baca's story seeks to explain a point of view that one is more likely to become incarcerated and to struggle in life if he is uneducated. "I wrote to sublimate my rage, from a place where all hope is gone, from a madness of having been damaged too much, from a silence of killing rage" (Baca). In his writing, Baca uses word pictures to show a side of despair in his life that eventually leads to a positive change where he now has hope. The beginning is filled with scenarios of him working in an emergency room "mopping up pools of blood and carting plastic bags stuffed with arms, legs and hands to the outdoor incinerator" (Baca), then moves on to detailed descriptions of his times spent incarcerated, and how the detectives treat an intoxicated man. "His shrill screams raked my nerves like a hacksaw on bone, the desperate protest of his dignity against their inhumanity."(Baca) The wording he uses describes a vivid, violent, and at times beautiful view. Throughout the narrative, Baca builds an explanation of the circumstances he is in, and builds a visual where ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
