Current Event Family Information
This year your student will be responsible for finding and writing about a
current event every other week. Students will be given a specific topic that they
will need to find an article or news story about. Stories can be found in a
newspaper, magazine, on the internet (like an online newspaper), or on the
television from a news program. Please help your student select an article that
appropriately fits each week’s topic. Then cut out, print out, or record the news
program’s name, time, and channel, along with the story’s title. Current events
chosen must be no more than 2 weeks old from the due date!
Students will then be responsible for writing about their chosen current
event. They will be given the assignment along with the requirements for each
current event. For example, students may be asked to write a summary and
explain why this event caught their attention, or how it might affect them. With
each assignment students will need to turn in their completed writing and the
article or news program information.
Current events will be a part of your student’s writing grade, and the
directions will need to be followed each week they are assigned. Current events
will be assigned on Monday and are due on Friday. This a great example of
helping your child learn and understand the world around them, while practicing
their ability to read expository text and use their writing abilities to explain what
they are reading. Have fun!

I understand that current events are a part of my student’s writing grade,
and are to be completed at home when they are assigned. I am aware that they
will be assigned at the beginning of the week on Monday and are due at the end
of the week on Friday.
