2. Massachusetts
• Puritans wanted to “Purify” The Church of Eng.
• 1629 Mass. Bay Co (a Joint Stock) gets a Royal
Charter for the Mass Bay Colony
• 1630 11 ships bring 1000 Puritans to Boston
• To escape persecution in England from 1630-40
over 20k Puritans come in the “Great
Migration”
3. The New England Way
• Puritans set up self-governing congregations
(members of the same church) tight knit
• Hard Work- how they honor God
• Education – by law they all have to learn to
read (Bible)
• Representative government-John Winthrop
(Governor) expanded voting to all Male
Church members (Freemen)
4. Rhode Island
• Roger Williams is Banished from Mass.
Because he believes:
1. No stealing native lands
2. No mandatory church
3. No forcing your beliefs on others
4. Separation of church and state (government)
He and his congregation create Rhode Island
5. Dissenters
• Anne Hutchinson- (Dissenter) Believes that
some Puritan ministers aren’t “Elect”-she
challenges the authority, role of women in the
church- Flees to Rhode Island (1638)
• John Wheelright (Creates New Hampshire)
Exeter Compact (1638)->Colony 1679)
• Thomas Hooker-moves congregation and
creates Connecticut expanding voting to all
residents
6. Quakers
• Quakers are persecuted by Puritans
• They believe that everyone has the “inner
light” and that you don’t need a church or
minister to find God (He is within)
• Since all have the light => all are equal
• Women are preachers and missionaries
• Quaker missionaries are banished but return
to Puritan towns often under harsh penalties-
even death (Martyr- someone who dies for
religion)
