The directors pitch a music video for the song "Phenomenal" by Eminem. They choose this rap song because the lyrics tell a strong narrative that allows for an open story. The proposed storyline follows a character struggling in school and at home who copes by writing and recording a rap song. Scenes will be filmed in rural Crick and at Guilsborough School to contrast with rap conventions. Props like a pen, computer, microphone, and paper will be used to make scenes look realistic. Local actors will portray the main character, parents, classmates, and teacher. Costumes will distinguish between school, rap, and casual attire.
4. Rap Conventions
• Casual clothing, nothing too characterised but more
subtle and loose
• Tattoos
• Drugs violence and females
• Sections of direct contact with the camera
• Props regarding costume tend to be used
• Show clear display of emotions- if the song is angry the
artist is likely to present this through their gestures and
facial expressions
• Strong editing cuts between concept and narrative
• Follow the American dream lifestyle
5. Why we have chosen the Genre
We both have a deep interest in the rap genre due to its
good and interesting narrative aspects. The rap genre
normally has a deeper meaning to what it seems like. It is
very much like poetry, and this is something that people
don’t see and realise. We also wanted to make a video on
the rap genre due to its strong stereotypes and this video
will hopefully enlighten people on the rap genre and how
it isnt all about money and drugs. The genre has been
used a limited number of times and the videos normally
reflect a poor quality and we want to prove people wrong
and show the audience that the rap genre can be done
and can have a high quality video
6. Why We have chosen this song
The song we have chosen is a very atmospheric,
inspirational and powerful. The lyrics show a
strong narrative which is good when producing a
video. The narrative has allowed the video to be
open with the storylines due to the song having
a variety of different ways of portrayal.
Therefore making the song appealing to use as a
base for our music video
7. Storyline
• There is a main character who is struggling with life at school and his parents are
arguing a lot.
• Due to everything that is going on and him bottling it up. He gets a sudden burst of
anger and the way he copes with it is to write a song
• After starting the song, he goes to school the next day and starts working on it
instead of doing his work. This resorts in lower grades and more struggling at
school
• People also start looking at him oddly because they don’t get the genre and don’t
think that someone from the countryside fits in with the rap scene
• The character goes home and starts recording the song on some recording
equipment he bought
• Parents hear him and go in his room and disapproves of their sons decision of
rapping and make it clear
• He retaliates by uploading it to social media and after a few months ends up
getting a high amount of views
• Then it skips into the future and he is in a recording studio
38. Crick also has a lot of streets
and houses that we can use
for the scenes where the
character is walking from
school to home. The
locations is also in the
countryside which breaks the
rap convention but fits with
the storyline of the main
character being an outcast
due to their love of rap music
For the recording studio scene we are going to make the scene in the house using
props such as Connors recording equipment. To make it look more realistic we
will do a lot of close up shots so the audience does not know any different
39. We will be filming in
Crick due to the rural
scenery and the
contrast of the
housing. This gives us
a choice in where to
film. The rural
scenery breaks the
conventions of rap
music, which will
make our video
unique.
We will also be
filming at
Guilsborough
School. As there
are scenes in the
video where a
classroom setting
is needed. This will
40. Props
We are using a pen
as a prop due to the
pen being used to
write the lyrics on
the sheet of paper.
We will also be
using pens in the
classroom scenes
because it will look
more realistic
We are using a computer to
put on the desk in the
bedroom because this will be
used in later scenes to show
key events that are happening
such as the internet views.
The microphone will also be
in the bedroom to show his
passion for music and will
also be used in the scenes
when he is recording his
songs.
All these props make the video look
youthful which relates to the target
audience of mainly youths watching
and listening to rap
41. We are using the exam
paper to demonstrate the
bad grades the character is
getting. The paper will
look used and it will be
filled in to give it the
realistic look
The exercise books are
going to be used so it will
make the classroom
environment better. The
people in the class will
have either an exercise
book or pieces of paper
with writing on to make the
setting realistic
The iPhone will be in some
scenes with the main
character so it will make it
modern. The phone will
also add to the realism to
the video due to a lot of
people in the modern day
using iPhones and new
technology
42. The pizza will be in one of
the scenes where he goes
and collects dinner to take
in his room. The pizza will
be partly eaten but not
fully because he is too
focused on the song, so we
thought the food would be
a good way of symbolising
this
Pieces of paper will be
used a lot throughout
the video, in scenes
such as the classroom
scenes and when he
starts to write the
song. There will also be
some pieces of paper
on the desk in the
bedroom to make it
more interesting and
busy
