Problems Caused By Chemistry
Chemistry is of great significant value and is not dime-a-dozen. Chemistry is ubiquitous – it is
found in the food we eat, in the air we breathe, everything we touch, everything we see and even us
humans are composed of chemicals. Chemistry made our life really comfortable, from fertilizers for
plants, soaps we use to clean our body, shampoos for our hair, moisturizing lotions, medicines to cure
illness, advance technologies to cure severe diseases and even the keys and circuitry of computers. Life
without chemicals is impossible. Most people probably think that chemistry is a complex and a boring
subject, but there’s this one thing denied by no one ever, chemistry is responsible in explaining the world
we are living in. Chemistry is in fact the study of everything.
Most written articles define chemistry as a branch of science that studies the composition,
structure, properties and change of matter. It is also referred to as the centralscience for it bridges to other
natural sciences. Without the innovations in chemistry, the luxuries we have today would not have been
possible.
Has an effigy of the world without the existence of chemistry every crossed your mind? We may
not have home works to squawk at but imagine if these things around you never existed. No comfortable
bed, no perfumes, no lotions, no food, no internet, no facebook, no twitter, no light bulbs, no medicine, no
everything. Absolutely, a life with no chemistry is a depressing dilemma. The world as we know it now
would never exist. What if we are still living in the prehistoric period where people ran around with
clubs? Despite all the good things chemistry has contributed, there are also negative things. Nuclear
weapons and other warfare armaments are created, and because of these things, destructions and death are
inevitable. Chemistry has made the world, at the same time, a comfortable and dangerous place to live in.
We all know that chemicals are products of chemistry, one example are chemical pesticides.
Pesticides are renowned as environment pollutants. The intended effects of these chemical doesn’t last
long, but according to studies and as proven by the scientists, these chemicals lolls and loiter in the
atmosphere, in the ground and also in waterways. They go beyond their intentional use thus creating
gradual accumulation of adverse pollution. If this thing continue to deteriorate, it can lead to
contaminations of bodies of water and also can affect not only the lands but also plants, trees, vegetation
and the like, and also the damage to non-target species, including us humans. Chemical pesticides not
only deplete the nutritional value of foods but also contaminate it. Although the target of these chemicals
is to kill living organisms, there are instances where they accidentally enters our body through the
contaminated food we eat, consequently affecting our health. Contamination with harmful chemicals is
one of the causes of myriad lethal diseases that is why researcherswarn people to reduce their exposure to
these toxic chemicals. Diabetes, allergies, asthma, eczema, cancer, attention deficit disorder, autism,
learning difficulties, infertility, depression, chronic fatigue, chemical sensitivities, heart disease, multiple
sclerosis, Parkinson’s disease, thyroid disease, inflammatory bowel disease are some of the innumerable
number of diseases caused by noxious chemicals. The higher the level of the chemical present, the higher
the level of the disease found in the person affected. Toxic chemicals are also used in chemical warfare
where toxic properties of chemical substances are used as weapons. We all know that chemicals had been
used as weapons for millennia, examples are the poisoned arrows and boiling tars. Modern chemical
2. warfare also left scars on the battlefields of different wars. During World War I, thousands of deaths and
over millions of casualties were recorded. Those who were injured suffered the effects of the chemicals
for the rest of their lives. During the Cold War,United States and the Soviet Union held massive amount
of chemical weapons enough to destroy much of the human and animal life on Earth. During World War
2, US dropped atomic bombs on the cities of Hiroshima and Nagasakikilling at least 129,000 citizens.
Until now, chemical weapons are used in wars and attacks such as the recent Paris Attacks, where at least
129 people died, and the civil war in Syria, were thousands of people are killed, even children who knows
so little about the world were not spared. The use of weapons, the damage of structures and oil fields,
fires, military transport actions and chemical spraying are all examples of the devastating impact war may
have to the world. Air, water and soil are polluted, humans and animals are killed, and numerous health
issues affect those still living. Death and destruction is visibly inevitable. A global nuclear war has
potential damage to humans and the environment. The estimated number of people would be killed is
over one billion and around one billion also are those who would be severely injured. The summation
would be equal to 3 billion which means almost half the population of the world would be immediately
affected. The spread of radiation would also affect those who survived through the destruction of crops
and wildlife, and pollution of the seas and other bodies of water. Those people who are away from those
sites would die because of starvation. And that is where famine enters, another problem caused by
chemistry. A famine is widespread scarcity of food caused by severalfactors, which some are aftereffects
of war, crop failure, drought, high food costs, poverty and violent political instability. Almost every
continent of the world has experience famine. If this remain indefinitely in existence, it could lead to
malnutrition, starvation, epidemic, and the worst, increase in mortality. Could this be the start of
extinction? The sad part is that there is nothing to blame but us.
After all, chemistry should not be blamed that these troubles are happening around us. Chemistry
is the reason why these things are created, but the knowledge whether to use them in good or bad is the
responsibility of humans. When chemistry goes wrong, chemistry can also be the answer to oppose it. Just
one example is green chemistry. Green chemistry differs from cleaning up pollution, it reduces pollution
by eliminating and minimizing the generation of hazardous substances. Maybe it’s too late to save and
bring the old earth back, but it is, indeed, never too late to try.
