64. “Critical Design uses speculative
design proposals to challenge narrow
assumptions, preconceptions and
givens about the role products play in
every day life. It is more of an attitude
than anything else, a position rather
than a method.
It’s opposite is affirmative design:
design that reinforces the status quo.”
Hertzian Tales – Dunne and Raby 1999
66. ASSESSMENT BRIEF 1
Shuteye - Dream journal – 20%
Throughout the semester you will keep a dream journal. You may use any medium
to record your dreams, though it must be contained in some sort of chronologi-
cal order. The journal will be assessed on its depth of detail and expression. The
dream journal will trigger other ideas and processes in your work. It should come
naturally. Could also encompass a Dream resume.
67. ASSESSMENT BRIEF 2
Deep sleep - Sleep research – 30%
Over 4 weeks investigate sleep using design fiction techniques through 4 separate
projects 1) singular or personal experience; 2) pair, group or social phenomenon;
3) scientific, political, or state policies around sleep, and 4) theoretical/metaphysi-
cal/psychological approaches.
In each of these areas, create a small design fiction project – which may be part
research, and part story. It is not important what is true and what is not – but it
must be believable.
Video will be the key medium used to express these design fictions.
68. ASSESSMENT BRIEF 3
Sleeper Cells – Final Project – 45%
Construct an elaborate and detailed fiction about sleep and people who sleep. Use
a variety of media and technology to illustrate this fiction. Refer to critical theory
practices in the development of your fictional scenario. You should employ tech-
niques of blurring reality with fiction within the project. Utilize video as well as ob-
jects and artefacts to address the topic within sleep.
DIGITAL ARCHIVE 5%
Coordinator will send brief out to all students mid semester.
