body systems. The mouth may be the most colonized area of the body. With good oral health detrimental effects do not normally occur, but many

Healthy People 2020 emphasis oral health in objective OH– 14. This objective is to increase the proportion of adults who receive preventive

Health promotion consists of three levels, primary, secondary and tertiary. Although all are levels of health promotion they differ depending on the
extent of illness. The first level is the primary level. This level involves people who are still healthy. At this level the susceptibility of contacting disease

There is a wide spectrum of perspectives on the definition of both health and health promotion. I have determined that there is no "correct" way to
describe these concepts, but multiple conceptualizations of each. An individual's health status can be determined using a wide variety of factors, and
there are several different methods of promoting health. This paper aims to identify the concepts that I believe define health and health promotion most
accurately, based on my personal opinions and experiences.
In my opinion, health is all encompassing, meaning that it is not merely defined by the absence of disease, but rather it is a combination of factors that
contribute to a sense of well–being. Doctor Margaret Newman's wellness–illness continuum (2003) defines health on a spectrum, with wellness at one
end and illness at the other. This concept is one–dimensional and views health negatively, such that if an individual isn't well, they are ill (Hall, Perry,
Potter & Stockert, 2014). Viewing health positively encompasses physical, psychological, social and environmental factors. From this perspective, an
individual can be chronically ill, but still achieve wellness if they are living a meaningful life (Hall et al., 2014). To integrate all of these factors, the
wellness–illness spectrum incorporates the concept of high level wellness. High level wellness involves an assessment of an individual's ability to
achieve wellness based on their environment, as well as their health

Health promotion utilises theories and models to guide practice. A theory is the general principles of a framework of ideas in regards to a particular

The difference between a theory and a model is that a theory is related to evidence based knowledge and a model is built on this knowledge although

The first thing that comes to my mind when i think of business with humanity in mind is the concept of disease prevention and health promotion. I
strongly believe that we have to collectively direct a larger chunk of our resources to prioritize disease prevention and health promotion over chronic
disease management.

However, this vision of mine drastically changed during my third year of medical school. I was exposed to public health and Preventive Medicine.
Everything suddenly made sense, I realized that instead of treating one patient at a time i can actually use my skills and knowledge to prevent diseases

During my public health training, I realized that unhealthy lifestyle choices such as inadequate physical inactivity, poor nutrition and substance abuse
were responsible for the majority of our chronic health problems. Chronic diseases, such as heart disease, cancer, and diabetes, are responsible for 7
of every 10 deaths among Americans each year and account for 75% of the nation's health spending. It became clear that disease prevention is key to
improving America's health and to keep rising health costs under control.
I completed my residency training in occupational medicine and board certification in preventive medicine. I realized that one of the best ways to
achieve this goal is to extensively study employer based health & wellness programs. Interest in employee health and wellness is gradually increasing
with more and more employers joining the bandwagon. Early research has shown that workplace health promotion and wellness programs decrease
long term health costs, reduce lost workdays, increase productivity and significantly decrease worker's compensation

When focusing on health protection and health promotion, it is important that people involved have an idea on what the specific aims are. The first
aim of health protection and health promotion, is to considerably improve the health of the entire UK, this means that the factors which are leading to

One such example of primary prevention is childhood obesity. A nurse can help parents and children by providing nutrtional advice, and through
weight management programmes, offer stategies for decreasing caloric intake and increasing physical activity (Coyne & Rabbitt, 2012) before
the child becomes obese. Secondary health promotion is prevention. This ranges from providing screening activities and treating early stages of
disease to limiting disability by averting or delaying the consequences of advanced disease, and limiting disability is a vital role for nursing since
preventive measures are primarily therapeutic and are aimed at arresting the disease and preventing further complications (Greiner & Edelman,
2010). An example of this would be blood pressure screenings. By doing these screenings, nurses can have a direct impact on prevention and early

Although this creates a decent future for young people it also may provide them with a sense of false hope as many may become extremely reliant on
one simple test. For example childhood immunisation programs prevent against diseases such as the whopping cough and Measles that allow for a
protection in young children. This protects any health risk of reoccurring but has also created controversy between those against immunisation as they
believe vaccines can cause many health risks such as autism.
Public health approaches distinguishes the role played by outside factors that influence individuals and their immediate health system. The established
programs, policies and services that are trying to create supportive health within a wide range of social and economic contexts seek to empower many
to exercise control over their own health and improve the ability to work together within their profession. For example health promoting schools
collaborate together to protect the health of students through a supportive school environment, these programs include Mind Matters which looks at
the mental health and wellbeing of young people. Overall this positively influences young people as it promotes for a supportive health environment
as it advocates so a broad range of people for all different areas of life although similar to the Lifestyle and behavioural approaches it allows for
individuals

Pender's Health Promotion Model Analysis
Effective patient outcomes occur when nurses strive to treat the whole patient, taking into account the individual's culture, preferences, values, and
desires. Pender's Health Promotion Model parallels this nursing concept by focusing on the patient's unique characteristics. Traditionally, nurses'
relationships with patients position them in a way that influences their health behavior. This impact is more successful if the nurse–patient relationship
is strong and a level of trust has developed (Petiprin, 2016–a). In this post, I will list the healthy lifestyle activities that I currently practice, choose
three healthy activities that I am not practicing, and explain how I could incorporate them into my life.

I consider only the first two practices as health promotion activities. So, to increase health promotion, I chose three activities that I could incorporate
including, getting eight hours of sleep nightly, removing diet soda from my diet, and adding weight training three times a week. A full–time job,
family responsibilities and class work are perceived barriers to getting adequate sleep and participating in strength training. My desire to do well in
school conflicts with my fear that less time for class work results in lower grades. Pender's model acknowledges the importance of personal perceptions
by stating that they directly, and indirectly influence health behavior (Petiprin, 2016–b). To incorporate these two activities, I need to assess and
document my daily time commitments and activities. This will show where I could fit these health practices into my life. Another possibility is
asking family members to take over some of my responsibilities on certain days to free up my time. Abstaining from diet drinks may be more
difficult because eating patterns and food/drink preferences are ingrained from past experiences. For example, if someone thinks pizza and a cola go
together, then eating pizza while having a glass of water is less enjoyable. For me, the key to giving up diet drinks is finding an alternative beverage
such as tea or fruit infused water that I could substitute when wanting something to drink other than water. To meet these goals, Pender's model
