Character Voice Lesson

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:

Objective: The students will match a phrase
  with which character’s VOICE it belongs to.
  This will help them to understand how they
  can use voice in their writing.
State Core Tie:
 3rd Grade Language Arts:
   Standard 8 Objective 2(b): Use voice to fit the
    purpose and audience.
I had previously taught a voice writing lesson

    to the students and saw that they had a
    VERY difficult time understanding how to
    change the voice of the text when addressed
    to different audiences or to represent
    different characters in their story. My mentor
    teacher and I decided it would be good to
    have the students see many examples of
    voice in writing to help them understand.
CHARACTER PHRASE READ
               I created a lesson where I
               used PowerPoint to
               display character voice
               phrases. The slides had
               the phrases as well as
               options for the students to
               select the best character
               voice match for the
               phrase. I read the phrase
               off the slide as well as the
               options.
EXAMPLE! WAHOO!!!

FOUR CORNER FUN!! 
We then played a form of Four
Corners. The four corners of the
room were labeled with a letter
sign. The students would go
stand in the corner that
contained the letter they
believed to be the correct
answer. I would then ask
students standing in whichever
corners were occupied why they
believed that character fit the
voice phrase.
ANSWER TIME!!
The students would then
return to their seats and I
would click to the next
slide that displayed the
correct answer. I had
added in sound effects
to the answer slides in
my presentation, which
the students absolutely
loved. It helped to keep
them engaged and
excited to find out which
character matched with
the phrase.
REFLECTION: THINGS THAT…..

STUDENTS USE OF TECHNOLOGY: NO

    In my lesson the students did not use

    technology; I only used it technology. However,
    my students were still actively participating
    through writing down the correct answer and
    moving to the corresponding corner. I was not
    able to create a lesson where my students could
    use technology because the only resource
    available with enough materials for EACH of my
    students to use was the computer lab. Because
    the students are already going to the lab weekly
    for computer time and 3+ mornings a week to
    practice taking end of level testing in the
    computer lab, my teacher thought it was best
    not to plan an additional computer lab lesson.
TECHNOLOGY USE IS ESSENTIAL: YES

    Without the questions on the PowerPoint, I

    would have had to either print many many
    pages to display the questions large enough for
    the students to read (which would have wasted
    time as I put up each new phrase), or I could
    have read off each of the questions (which
    would not have allowed the students to SEE the
    text). I did not want to provide worksheets with
    the phrases on them because I wanted to make
    sure the students worked together as a class on
    the phrases. PowerPoint made the activity run
    MUCH MUCH better.
FOCUS ON LEARNING TASK: YES

    This was a voice lesson. I taught nothing

    about PowerPoint even though it was the
    technology used. I focused on the learning
    task.
ADDED VALUE: YES

    The technology added value. The activity

    would have been more difficult and less
    engaging without the use of PowerPoint.

Tech Lesson Presentation 2

  • 1. Character Voice Lesson BY REBECCA BIRD SHAW
  • 2. LEARNING OBJECTIVES: Objective: The students will match a phrase with which character’s VOICE it belongs to. This will help them to understand how they can use voice in their writing. State Core Tie:  3rd Grade Language Arts:  Standard 8 Objective 2(b): Use voice to fit the purpose and audience.
  • 3. I had previously taught a voice writing lesson  to the students and saw that they had a VERY difficult time understanding how to change the voice of the text when addressed to different audiences or to represent different characters in their story. My mentor teacher and I decided it would be good to have the students see many examples of voice in writing to help them understand.
  • 4. CHARACTER PHRASE READ I created a lesson where I used PowerPoint to display character voice phrases. The slides had the phrases as well as options for the students to select the best character voice match for the phrase. I read the phrase off the slide as well as the options.

  • 6. FOUR CORNER FUN!!  We then played a form of Four Corners. The four corners of the room were labeled with a letter sign. The students would go stand in the corner that contained the letter they believed to be the correct answer. I would then ask students standing in whichever corners were occupied why they believed that character fit the voice phrase.
  • 7. ANSWER TIME!! The students would then return to their seats and I would click to the next slide that displayed the correct answer. I had added in sound effects to the answer slides in my presentation, which the students absolutely loved. It helped to keep them engaged and excited to find out which character matched with the phrase.
  • 8. REFLECTION: THINGS THAT…..   • 10. STUDENTS USE OF TECHNOLOGY: NO In my lesson the students did not use  technology; I only used it technology. However, my students were still actively participating through writing down the correct answer and moving to the corresponding corner. I was not able to create a lesson where my students could use technology because the only resource available with enough materials for EACH of my students to use was the computer lab. Because the students are already going to the lab weekly for computer time and 3+ mornings a week to practice taking end of level testing in the computer lab, my teacher thought it was best not to plan an additional computer lab lesson.
  • 11. TECHNOLOGY USE IS ESSENTIAL: YES Without the questions on the PowerPoint, I  would have had to either print many many pages to display the questions large enough for the students to read (which would have wasted time as I put up each new phrase), or I could have read off each of the questions (which would not have allowed the students to SEE the text). I did not want to provide worksheets with the phrases on them because I wanted to make sure the students worked together as a class on the phrases. PowerPoint made the activity run MUCH MUCH better.
  • 12. FOCUS ON LEARNING TASK: YES This was a voice lesson. I taught nothing  about PowerPoint even though it was the technology used. I focused on the learning task.
  • 13. ADDED VALUE: YES The technology added value. The activity  would have been more difficult and less engaging without the use of PowerPoint.
