Why is PDHPE important? Is it not just teaching sport and passing it off as more???
What if I told you it was far more then that?!?! What if it was a life lesson on individuality and team work and decision making as well as kicking a footy with your mates?
Maybe... Just maybe it is...
2. My Personal Reflection.
I Believe that PDHPE is subject teaching about life and
individuality. While It does discuss the importance and
development of teem work and cooperation (important in
all aspects of life), it also teaches one how to best succeed
during ones life.
It discusses vital subjects theoretically and practically such
as: Active Lifestyle’s, Dance (physical coordinated
movement), Games and Sports, Growth and
Development, Gymnastics, Interpersonal
Development, Personal Health Choices and Safe Living.
It involves all aspects of development, and prepares the
children for difficulties not yet faced such as
puberty, life, drugs, sports, bodily coordination.
3. What Does PDHPE Involve?
Two Stands: PDH (Personal Health and Development)
AND PE (Physical Education).
4. So it is more then JUST sport?
YES! PDHPE is a syllabus that “is based on a broad
notion of health that encompasses all aspects of an
individual’s well being, inclusive of
social, mental, physical and spiritual health. It is
concerned with developing in students the knowledge
and understanding, skills, values and attitudes that
will enable them to lead healthy and fulfilling lives. It
also provides schools with a curriculum framework for
teaching and learning related to the health priorities
for young people of drug education, fitness and
physical activity, child protection and nutrition.”
(NSW K-6 PDHPE Syllabus, 2007)
5. What Research is there?
“In the 12 months to April 2012, children spent more time
watching TV, DVDs or videos than any of the other selected
recreational activities. On average, children spent 15 hours
watching TV, DVDs or videos outside of school hours in the last
school fortnight, followed by 10 hours on other screen-based
activities.
(ABS, 4901.0 - Children's Participation in Cultural and Leisure
Activities, Australia, Apr 2012)
Research like this amplifies the importance for PDHPE. PDHPE
teaching children about consequences, how to have a healthy
life, balance in all aspects of life and also physical activities
(Games and Sports) that they can participate in in order to be
healthy. Without it Children will never know the best decisions
to make in life, and will never have an opportunity as good as
this to experience new sports and physical leisure activities.
