PDHPE
WHAT IS PDHPE ?
- PDHPE Stands for – Personal Development, Health and Physical
Education.
- PDHPE is one of the six Key Learning Areas in New South Whales
Primary Learning Curriculum.
IMPORTANCE OF PDHPE/HEALTH ISSUES.
- As our society is rapidly shifting community awareness in terms of healthy
lifestyles should be increasing.
- Good Health is determined by better-quality quality of life, less sickness
and disability, happier personal, family and social experiences and the
opportunity to recreational and work choices. Individuals who don’t adopt
a healthy lifestyle are taking away opportunities of maintaining a healthy
mental, physical, social and spiritual wellbeing.
The 8 Strands of PDHPE are :Interpersonal Relationships, Gymnastics,
Dance, Games and Sports, Safe Living, Growth and Development, Personal
Health Choices and Active Lifestyle.
WHY PDHPE ?
- An individual can improve their quality of life by being
informed on health issues. This will allow them to have a
sense of control, when it comes to making healthy lifestyle
decisions. This will allow them to experience positive
relationships, improved quality of life and less illness.
- PDHPE is important as it plays a unique role in the
development of students knowledge, understanding and
practical skills. By developing these skills students will be able
to develop the following areas of health.
- PDHPE informs students that the responsibility of health is not
just theirs but societies.
The 5 PDHPE Skills are: Communicating, Moving, Decision
Making, Problem Solving, Interacting and Values and Attitudes.
THE CIRRICULUM
 The promotion of fundamental principals, social justice and
supportive environments will all help in creating positive health
outcomes. By raising concern in areas such as welfare, rights
and dignity, disadvantages and actions students will be able to
determine health priorities and make decisions in regards to
health on their own.
 PDHPE is an important key learning area within the primary
curriculum as encourages an understanding and valuing of the
self and others. This is done by identifying and expressing a
range of emotions, and helping students to appreciate the way
that they think. This will open up the students learning, as they
will act in a more positive manner. Students who are able to
understand and value themselves will work more cooperatively
in a team and enjoy more secure interpersonal relationships.
MAKE TIME FOR PHYSICAL ACTIVITY
 PDHPE is important as it promotes physical activity.
Health experts have settled that 30 minutes of moderate
physical activity should be completed by an individual
everyday. Without this students become inactive, and will
suffer weight problems. If individuals are encouraged to
participate in physical activity once a day they will receive
optimum health.
 Regular physical activity improves cardiovascular efficiency
and will reduce factions such as coronary heart disease.
Physical activity enhances bone development, controls
obesity and improves immune status and psychological
health. Participation in physical activity can be creative,
enjoyable and can be used as a social channel to build an
individual self-esteem.
IMPLEMENTING PDHPE INTO SCHOOLS
 School programs at all levels have the duty to encourage the
physical growth and development of students to support
acquisition of movement skills and to nurture positive attitudes
towards physical activity.
 Decision- making is the key learning area that students are
taught when they first start school. Students will be more likely
to use strategies that they have learn and developed in the
classroom in their own lives. PDHPE focuses on physical,
social, emotional and cognitive development patterns of
students growth, the development and maintenance of positive
interpersonal relationships and factors influencing personal
health choices.
