2. WATT COMPARISON
LED equivalent.
Simplify you can calculate as below:
LED 1W = incandescent 8W, e.g. 10W LED flood light replace 80W incandescent
light
LED 1W = halogen 6W, e.g. 10W LED spot light replace halogen spot light 60W
LED 1W = mercury light 4.5W, e.g. 50W LED high bay light replace mercury light
250W
LED 1W = High-pressure mercury light 2W. e.g. 90W high bay light replace high-
pressure mercury light 180W
LED 1W = Metal halide lamp 1W.
LED 1W = fluorescent light 2.5W, e.g. LED tube 18W replace fluorescent light 40W

3. Reasons to Buy LED Lightings
• Company Image / Green Company
– Bridgestone, Showa, Honda, Toyota, KMK Global
• Save The Energy
– Yamaha, Omron, Arnotts, Softex
• Reduce Maintance Cost
– Coca-Cola, Alfamart, Indomart
• Special purpose
– Better CRI: Alvini, 3M
– Heat control: Daihatsu, Epson
– Insects control :, Yamatogomu, Goodyear
– etc

4. A New Product: LED Lighting
• Lifetime
– An estimate of how long the LED lighting is expected to operate as
intended or called “useful life”
– In general, “product lifetime decreases as temperature increases (US
Energy dept – June 2011)
– Factors:
• Lumen depreciation 50% or 70%
• Failure of driver, optics, or other components
• Reliability
– The ability of LED lighting to perform its required function understated
conditions at specified period of time
– Factors:
• Design Flaws experience, R & D
• Manufacturing defects “burn in”
• End of life serviceable vs non serviceable

6. How to Select Good LED Lightings?
• QUALITY
– Experience
• Long experience in LED
• Have sufficient test data
• Serve Big Customers
– Design
• Power management
• Thermal management
• Optical management
• Luminaire Assembly
Integrity
• SAFETY
– Accreditation/Certificates
– Insurance
• Warranty
• Others
– Cost, Delivery, Service
– etc

7. Quality Selection - Experience
• Long experience in LED
– Need time to achieve a solid understanding in this business as its
requires knowledge in electronics, semiconductors, and lightings
• Sufficient test data
– Need a valid data to prove lifetime, brightness/flux decay, failure rates,
etc
– Needs up to 5 years data collection to proof lifetime of 50,000 hours
• Serve Big Customers
– Reputable customers have capability to do “Value Analysis Value
Engineering” in choosing the best product
– Require a sufficient volume to get the most efficient production cost

8. Quality Selection - Design
• Power management
Ensuring the power delivered to LED packages is appropriately size and
filtered
– Internal or External Driver
• Driver: capacitors, inductors, transformers, opto-isolators, and other
electrical components
• all have different design lifetime, are affected by operating and ambient
temperature, and are vulnerable to electrical operating parameter variations
from surge, spikes, etc.
• Electrolytic Capacitor is the weakest, where the life will cut by half if
temperature increase 10 oC
• 59% failures caused by Driver failure, 10% by LED package, 31 by housing
(US Energy dept – June 2011)
– Components selection
• Must provide well controlled and protected (from electrical transients) drive
current

9. Quality Selection - Design
• Thermal management
ensuring the heat generated by LED packages and the power system components
is removed to minimize LED temperatures so as to maximize LED performance and
lifetime. LEDs may become “dim” or not even illuminate if there is no control in
thermal/temperature
Temperature can be lowered by implementing:
– Choice of board materials: Aluminium board is better than FR4 (Ts 143oC
vs 80oC)
– Optimization of the copper foil area of the board: Heat transfer will be
better with larger copper area
– Optimization of the LED placement (LED pitch): Wider LED pitch will
lower the temperature (Ts 67.3oC for 12 mm vs 46.3oC for 20 mm)
– Implementing heat sinks: Heat radiation efficiency will be improved by
attaching a good heatsink to the back side of the board (Ts 95oC vs 73oC)

10. Quality Selection - Design
• Optical management
ensuring that light output from the LED packages is
correctly and efficiently shaped and directed toward the
desired surface
– Wrong design will create:
• Non uniform light distribution
• Glare, health concern
• Yellowish, bluish, etc
– CCT/Color Control Chips processing and selection
– Cover/Lens Difffused, Stripe, or Clear

11. Quality Selection - Design
• Luminaire Assembly Integrity
ensuring that the overall housing design and assembly
processes provide for sufficient long term protection from
dust, moisture, vibration, and other adverse enviromental
effects
– Man, Machine, Material, Method
• Skills
• Sophisticated equipment
• High quality materials
• Process know how
– Serviceable or Non serviceable
• Makesure parts/components can be repaired easily without
damaging whole unit
www.dunia-led.com
12. Additional Selection
• Safety
– Accreditation/Certificates
• UL certificates, CE, etc
– Insurance
• Important to ensure the product is within safety standard
• Warranty
– Given the early stage of LED Lighting Technology, warranties provide a means for the
potential buyer to reduce risk
• Others
– Cost
– Delivery
– Service
