A presentation of my final year project, which was the development and fabrication of a 50kg capacity DC electrical shopping cart for use in stores and load carrying applications.
2. Introduction to Project
I begin this section with the statement of my project topic, the
project I have embarked upon is called ‘The Development and
Performance Evaluation a DC Electrical Powered Shopping Cart’
The DC electrically powered shopping cart that will be used in
holding the items of shopper in a shopping mall not require
excessive amount of push (Human Effort) to move items from
one point to another in a shopping mall by having a motor
attached beneath it and at the push of a button on the handle,
the motor spins causing forward movement, eliminating the need
of actually pushing the cart with much physical strength.
The Target audience for usage is shoppers and shopping malls
3. Aim and Objectives
Aim
The aim is to develop and carry out performance evaluations
(test) of a dc powered electrical shopping cart
Objectives
The objectives of this project are the goals of the project and
these include.
1. Develop and Fabricate an effectively working D.C. Electrical
shopping Cart
2. The shopping cart should be effective enough to carry the
maximum load requirements with minimum or no lag.
3. The shopping cart should be aesthetical pleasing to sight
4. To push the boundaries of technological achievement in
Nigeria
4. Scope/Areas of Coverage
To achieve the aims and objectives of the project the following
areas of action will be carried out
a. Drawing of the DC electrically powered shopping cart using
both hand sketches and final design with computer software
b. Suitable material selections for the DC electrically powered
shopping cart
c. Load carrying ability of the shopping cart calculations and
possible re-selection of material and dimension re-scaling
d. Fabrication of the DC electrically powered shopping cart
e. Electrical motor design and construction for the DC electrical
shopping cart
f. Actual physical testing of the DC electrical shopping cart i.e.
performance evaluation
5. Methodology
In this section I list the sequential steps that are intended to be
followed for the successful development of the DC electrically powered
shopping cart
Design of the structural
layout of the DC powered
shopping cart
The frame of the cart is
fabricated by welding the
different metallic parts
together
The batteries, motor and
wheel, chainlink
assembly are attached to
the bottom of the cart
Wires are passed through
the handles of the cart to
connect to the switch
The project is spray
painted upon
completion.
The project is covered in
ply-wood and then the
wood is spray painted to
give aesthetical finish
6. Progress Made So-Far
The activities I have carried out so far towards the completion of the DC electrically powered shopping
cart are represented with the chart below
The results of the activities are discussed in the next slides.
Progress
•Proposition of Numerous Project Ideas to My supervisor and approval of a single
•Collection of relevant information related to my project such as patent documents, anthropometric
sizes
Progress
•Making Rough Sketches of the concept that I came up with and making distance and total Volume
calculations with the sizes to be used
•Material selection for the DC Powered shopping cart and estimation of total weight in unloaded
condition
Progress
•Selection of total load that is desired to be loaded unto the shopping cart
•Addition of a factor of safety to the intended load weight
Progress
• CAD drawing of the concept
•Further Design Analysis
•Fabrication
•Performance Evaluation
7. Results (1)
The Sketches Made for the concept are shown below
There are more sketches in the next slides
9. Results (2)
The selected material in comparison to part and function
obtained the table below
Aluminium 2011 is selected as the suitable material
Serial Number Component Selected Material
1 Basket Aluminium 2011
2 Handle Aluminium 2011
3 Bottom Plate Aluminium 2011
4 Tyre Shaft Aluminium 2011
5 Wheel Shaft
Connector
Aluminium 2011
6 Bevel Gear Mild Steel
10. Results (3)
From the table aluminium is the selected material, depending on
stress strain calculations to ensure the fidelity of aluminium as a
viable material for the component it will be used as
The entire mass of the DC electrically powered shopping cart is
30kg.
The fully loaded mass of the cart is 80kg. Hence an electrical
motor that can carry a mass 80kg effectively without slipping is
going to be used
11. Results 4
The proposed concept was drawn using the solid works 2016 software and it shown
below in the next slides
18. Cost Analysis
Component Cost (Naira)
Aluminium (30kg) 18,000
Electric Motor 13,000
Chain Link 10,000
Battery 5,000
Wheels 4,400
Ply-Wood 3,000
Paint 1,000
Total 54,400
19. Areas of Application of Project
The area of application of the project forms its key contribution
to society, the DC electrically powered shopping cart will find
application in shopping malls (ShopRite, target, Wal-Mart, K-
mart), the design can also be modified to suit a wide range of
needs such as load carrying applications e.t.c.
20. Conclusion
In conclusion, the project carried out was the development and
performance evaluation of a DC electrical shopping cart, the
activities carried out for the completion of the project spans
from the conceptualization, design, design analysis, fabrication
and testing of the DC shopping cart, the load designed for the
DC shopping cart to carry is 50kg and this forms a part of the
goals which is to be able to carry 50kg
