Static charging on rewinder cores
Problem
On the rewinder of a cast film extrusion line, when the reel reaches the pre-decided diameter, the web is cut,
so that the finished roll can be removed and a new core introduced for winding. The leading edge of the web
is glued or taped on to the new core and winding of the new roll begins. However, the glue or tape prevents
the proper winding of the first few layers of the new roll. This leads to the wastage of a few metres of the
substrate.
Solution
Valstat® static charging bars provide the perfect solution to the problem of improper winding when they are
used instead of glue or tape. These bars are installed as shown in the diagram above.
When an electrostatic force is applied, a charge is induced on the web which creates a temporary bond of
attraction between the web and the surface of the new plastic/paper core. Rewinding is thus achieved
seamlessly at high operation speeds during the reel changeover. The advantage of using charging bars
instead of glue or tape is that the winding is always perfect from the first layer onwards, thus ensuring zero
wastage.
