Editor's Notes
As the Brock Teacher-Librarian it is my pleasure support eco-school initiative in our green Library. You can often find green groups like our green club, eco-school team and LOLA monitors meeting here. If you need to add photos, work samples or other materials to the eco-school binder it is easily located in the teacher resource section of the library. And don’t forget, we accept batteries for recycling too!
In the library we work hard to include environmentally responsible choices in our daily routine. We reduce the use of paper wherever possible and the paper that we do use is always recycled. We minimize the garbage we create and recycle all materials that we can. Often you will find the lights off or on low in order to ensure that we only use the electricity we need. We also monitor computer use to ensure computers are logged off so that they will power down.
As teacher librarian at an eco-school, I am familiar with the eco-school standards and the eco-school components. If you are looking to focus on ecological literacy, energy conservation, waste reduction, school ground greening or all components in combination, I can help you find resources or develop programing to support this within the eco-school program context.
It is a priority for our library to purchase books that support environmental literacy. We have recently purchased books on topics like recycling, garbage, electricity, endangered species and environmental choices. We will continue to ensure that books in this area are current, relevant and up to date. The school library website also has many great links to sites that support eco-literacy and we can easily find and add others to our PLC wiki or your own classroom wiki.
Eco-smart initiatives don’t end with smart choices and resources. As your partnering teacher-librarian I would love to work with you to implement eco-literacy initiatives in your classroom. When you are making programming decisions consider booking a planning session. Together we can create rich, curriculum based tasks that will engage and enrich our future eco-citizens.
