This document summarizes a presentation on designing an information literacy program for the new K-12 curriculum in the Philippines. The presentation discusses how the K-12 curriculum and information literacy are related, provides examples of information literacy programs and activities for different grade levels, and emphasizes the importance of collaboration between teachers and librarians. It concludes that school libraries play a key role in developing students' information literacy skills and lifelong learning abilities to help them succeed in the changing educational landscape.

2. Objectives
● Be aware of the concepts of the K-12
curriculum;
● To become adept at using search and
retrieval skills;
● To know the present issues dealing with
marketing of library resources;
● To familiarize with trends in instructional
media and online information retrieval

3. Focal Points
● Design
● K-12 Program or
Curriculum
● Information and
Media Literacy
● Integral ideas and
concepts
● The Creative
Process
● School Libraries as
cultural,
communal, and
structural systems
● Higher Order
Thinking Skills

● The four steps to Design
Thinking relies on
natural and coachable
human abilities to be
intuitive, to recognize
patterns; and to construct
ideas that are
emotionally meaningful
as well as functional

6. The Salient Points of K-12P
1. Strengthening Early Childhood Education
(Universal Kindergarten)
What library activities and projects support
early literacy development?
2. Building Proficiency Through Language
(Mother Tongue Based Instruction)
Are books and resources in the library support
MTBI?
3. Making the Curriculum Relevant to Learners
(Contextualization and Enhancement)
What collaborative programs does the library
have to enrich the curriculum and enhance
student learning?
http://lovealibrarian.blogspot.com
7. The Salient Points of K-12P
4. Gearing up for the Future
(Senior High School)
Does the library have linkages and networking with
community resources that will offer students an
experiences of life outside the home and school
environment?
5. Ensuring Integrated and Seamless Learning
(Spiral Progression)
Is the librarian involved in curricular planning and in
teaching and learning processes?
6. Nurturing the Holistically Developed Filipino
(College and Livelihood Readiness)
Does the library have programs that develop life skills and
well-being?
http://lovealibrarian.blogspot.com
8. The vision: the K-12 graduate is a
skilled Filipino
a. Information, media and technology skills;
b. Learning and innovation skills;
c. Effective communication skills;
d. Life and career skills.
Formal education is highly instrumental and even
necessary to improve the production capacity of a
population.
An educated population is a productive population.

9. I therefore conclude…
* The K-12P is a holistic and continuous
program focused at developing in its
learners a belief system and set skills on
lifelong learning.
* The K-12P looks at the learner as an
empowered citizen of the community, the
country and the world.
* The K-12P is centered at nurturing and
nourishing the local knowledge of its
peoples to fuel the nation towards global
success.

10. Let’s BUZZ! THINK – PAIR - SHARE
1. What are the challenges of K-12P to school
libraries?
2. What are the opportunities presented by
K-12P to teachers and school librarians?
Use the guide question in slides 6-7 for
points of discussion. Write your answers
down in a chart (slide 11)

16. K-12P and Librarians
* Engage in continuous and meaningful
professional development activities.
* Establish local, regional, national and
global links and networks through ICTs.
* Be a K-12 librarian. Be a lifelong learner.

17. School Libraries and the K-12P
● Let us look at school library research!

- Two decades of school library research
- Lance, Todd, Kuhlthau, Smith, et. al.
- National Commission for Library and
Information Science, US (2007)

18. School Libraries WORK!
a. School libraries contribute to student
achievement.
b. School libraries have an important role in
teaching.
c. School libraries are leading the way for
technology use in schools.
d. School libraries inspire literacy.
e. School libraries don't matter without
certified librarians.
http://lovealibrarian.blogspot.com
19. School Libraries WORK!
Resolution:
School libraries be given and provided with
up to date resources from print and
nonprint materials;
School librarians or school library media
specialist be given a "highly qualified"
classification;
Every school library be staffed by a highly
qualified, state certified school library
media specialist.

20. Critical Review of Literature
UK Study - Williams, Cole and Wavell (2002)
Teacher and librarian collaboration;
Quality and variety of collection;
Adequate funding;
Flexible provisions of the library’s services
and programs;
Quality and frequency of library input and
participation in support of teaching and
learning;
Qualified library staff;
Standards to enhance effective teaching and
learning experiences.

28. I therefore conclude…
● The school library, in this event of changes
and shifting paradigms, has moved
emphasis from collection development to
student centered services to the
development of lifelong learning skills (a
belief system).
● We need to unmoor ourselves, once in a
while, from the technical and structural
work and reach out to people we serve.
From our interaction with them, we can
design programs that are empowering and
life affirming.

32. What is Information Literacy?
● A set of abilities requiring individuals to
recognize when information is needed and
have the ability to locate, evaluate and use
effectively the needed information (ALA,
2000).
● IL includes the communication of created
information and that, the process by which
information were gathered and derived
from a variety of sources was done
ethically and responsibly.
http://lovealibrarian.blogspot.com
33. Information Literate people can…
● Access information efficiently and
effectively;
● Evaluate information critically and
competently;
● Uses information accurately and
creatively;
● Appreciate literature and other creative
expression of information;
● Strive for excellence in information
seeking and knowledge generation;
http://lovealibrarian.blogspot.com
34. Information literate people can…
● Pursue information related to personal
interests;
● Contribute positively to the learning
community and to society and thus,
recognizes the importance to a democratic
society.
● Practice ethical behavior in regard to
information and IT;
● Participate effectively in groups to pursue
and generate information.

patrons, school
curriculum,
pedagogy and
instructional
technology
● Support of school
leadership, teachers
and parents
