3. SIMPLE TENSES OF VERBS
The tense of a verb indicates when the action or condition
occurred.
There are three simple verb tenses: the simple past tense,
the simple present tense, and the simple future tense.
5. SIMPLE PAST TENSE
The simple past tense denotes an action that took place at
a definite time in the past.
In forming the verb in the simple past form, add –d or –ed
to the verb regardless if the subject is singular or plural.
For verbs ending in y such as study and bury, replace the
letter y with i and then add –ed.
However, some special verbs, called irregular verbs, do not
form their past tense by adding –d or –ed.
6. Examples:
I talked to my father yesterday.
The students studied hard last night.
The thief stole his money the other day.
8. SIMPLE PRESENT TENSE
The simple present tense denotes an action that is taking place
at the present time.
In forming a verb in the simple present form, add the letter –s
or –es to the verb if the subject is singular. If the subject is
plural, simply retain the base form of the verb.
For linking verbs, use is for singular subjects and are for plural
subjects.
It is used to express a general truth, to indicate a permanent
condition, to state a present fact, or to refer to a habitual
action.
9. Examples:
Cakes are sweet.
Jim is intelligent.
My grandmother bakes delicious cakes.
Maria does her household chores every day.
11. SIMPLE FUTURE TENSE
The simple future tense denotes an action that will take
place at some definite time in the future.
To form the verb in the simple future tense, add the word
will or shall before the base form of the verb regardless if
the subject is singular or plural.
13. DIRECTION: Underline the verb or the verb phrase in the sentence. Write
PS if the sentence is in past tense, PR if it is in the present tense and FT if
