When I was nine years old, my mother told my sister and me she had a brain tumor that had been
causing severe headaches. I didn't understand what a tumor was then, only that it was making her ill.
My mother assured us she would be better in no time, and went to the hospital to have the lime–
sized growth removed. I looked forward to having my healthy, courageous, caring, and joyous
mother back from the hospital, but instead, she came home debilitated and glum with surgical
staples on her scalp. After that, her days were filled with frequent radiation appointments, then
chemotherapy. She was often drained from having to travel hours to and from treatment facilities in
addition to receiving the harsh cancer treatments. I began to realize she would never completely be
her old self again.
I detested cancer because of the changes it had brought to our family, but at the same time, it
intrigued me. The questions started forming the day I found out she was ill. The more answers I
found in books and online, the more in–depth my questions became. The complexities of science
and medicine fascinated me. At the same time, I was inspired by the compassionate healthcare
professionals that treated and worked with my mother.
Five years after her initial diagnosis, an MRI scan revealed that my mother's tumor had
metastasized. A few months after her second surgical extraction, more tumors were found. With
further treatment impossible, she began to lose her strength and mobility, and was placed in hospice.
As one of her caregivers, I helped bathe her, took her the bathroom, groomed and fed her, and spent

As a child, I did not have many friends, I was bullied throughout my entire childhood which caused
me to shut most of the world out. I began to seclude myself from everything and everyone, except
my grandfather. My grandfather quickly became my security blanket, my shoulder to cry on, and my
best friend. He spent most of his time comforting me and telling me that I was too precious for this
world. After a while, I began to believe those words and my confidence grew immensely. However,
at the raw age of thirteen, my grandfather was diagnosed with stage three brain cancer and was
given only a year to live. At that point, everything started to decay for me. I did not care about
anything anymore, whether that was school, my family, or myself.

Although some types of brain cancer do not show any signs or symptoms, the ones that do depend

Surgery – If the tumour is small and far from sensitive areas of the brain, surgery may be performed
to remove it fully, although even removing a small portion helps in calming the symptoms. Yet, this
method still risks infection, bleeding, and affects other areas of the brain. For example, if the tumour
is near the optical nerve, vision loss may occur.
Radiation – Radiation uses high–energy beams (e.g. protons and x–rays) to kill the tumour cells.
This method may either use an external beam radiation, which is radiation outside the body, or
brachytherapy, which is when the radiation is placed inside the body near the tumour. A whole–
beam radiation may be used if the cancer spread from other parts of the body toward the brain. Side
effects depend on the type and dose, and they include fatigue, headaches, and scalp irritation.
Chemotherapy – This method uses anti–cancer drugs that are usually inserted into the bloodstream

Since no study is perfect and a case control study is low on the hierachy of evidence in
epidemiological studies, this study alone does not provide significant evidence for policy making,
especially considering the widespread usage and effects mobile phones have on society. However, if
backed by further, more indepth studies and analysis, there could be implications for policy making
if there was more evidence pointing towards causing glioma. Even so, glioma is quite a rare disease,
and an increased risk is still quite low, even if it were two or threefold. Due to the significance that

Brain cancer is the formation of a tumor or intracranial neoplasm abnormalities in the brain. The two
main types of tumors are malignant or cancerous tumors and benign tumors. The spreading of
cancer to other parts of the body is called metastasis. Detection of brain cancer is typically done
using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and confirmed by biopsy. The class of the tumor falls into
different categories and treatment is determined by the severity of the tumor. Although the cause of
brain cancer is still mostly a mystery there are several risk factors that increase your chance of
developing brain cancer: a hereditary condition known as neurofibromatosis, chemical exposure,
Epstein–Barr virus and ionizing radiation. Although not proven it is believed that talking on the
phone may increase the chances of brain cancer. Brain tumors are treated based on their size,
location, type and severity of the tumor. Typically the tumor is removed in surgery and then the
patient goes through radiation treatment. Early detection of a tumor greatly increases the odds that a
patient will recover. The radiation kills cancerous cells at the same time it kills healthy cells.
Because the healthy cells are also dying the effects off therapy are dangerous. The patients
experience many side effects. A new treatment is being tested where nanoparticles are filled with
genes for an enzyme that turns a compound into a potent killer
