How The Oceans Can Feed The World
What if saving the oceans meant we could bring food to the hungry? Or something we 're doing because in return it creates jobs for local fishermen
and preserves fishermen 's jobs around the globe? It 's even more than an economical quest as well. Saving the oceans can feed the world. As you
already know, there are more than a billion people on this planet right now suffering from hunger. Unfortunately, we're expecting this problem to
worsen as the world's population continues to grow, which will cause an immediate increase of stress on our food resources. Now that is a huge
concern for all of us, since our operational land per capita is already on the decline in both developed and developing countries. Since climate change is
happening, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The first thing we need to do is locate the fish, which Oceana has done a great job of doing, fish are conveniently located in the coastal zones of
countries, these "coastal zones" are under the control of national jurisdictions, which means each country can manage their own fisheries. It's a good
thing that these zones are controlled by national jurisdictions, because if it were done internationally, it would be a lot more difficult for these
changes to be put into action. The reasons why we should focus in on these coastal zones, is simply because the fish. There are seven times as
many fish in these zones compared to the high seas, which means for us we have seven times more of a change to reestablish a lot of our fisheries,
and to feed hungry mouths. There are over 80 different coastal countries throughout the world, which makes it hard to focus on all of them.
However, not all 80 coastal countries have a tremendous amount of coastline, so if we were to narrow it down to European countries and 10 more
countries with coastlines, it ends up being 90% of all the world's fish catch. Based on Oceania's work here in the United States, we know that there
are three key components we have to do in order to bring these fisheries back to their full capacities, and they are: to set limits on how much fish each
country can take per

Coastal Management In Hastings
Hypothesis Coastal Management in Hastings is effective economically, socially, environmentally and is sustainable for the future.
Hastings was chosen as an area to investigate coastal management because they had three types of hard and soft engineering. Secondly, it has a tourist
industry that can be investigated. Thirdly, it has Shoreline Management Plan so the plan can be evaluated. Lastly, it Ties in withtourism and coastal
parts of GCSE syllabus that are familiar and understood
Key Concepts
Longshore drift is movement of sediment along the coastline. The prevailing wind blows waves carrying sediment into the beach at an angle, the
waves break on the shore and as the water runs back into the sea it carries the sediment back down the beach, perpendicular to the angle. This will
lead to a zigzag motion (/////) as ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Soft engineering is working with nature by using natural materials or allowing nature to take back areas. some examples of this is beach nourishment
is the process of dumping or pumping sand from elsewhere onto an eroding shoreline which is to create a new beach or to widen the existing
beach, this technique is natural and makes the waves lose power travelling across it,However it dosen't last very long and It does not stop erosion,it
simply gives the erosional forces (usually waves) something else to erode for awhile, another type of soft engineering is managed retreat which is
where Areas of the coast are allowed to erode and flood naturally, this makes the land become an marsh, slowing waves and reducing ersoion, however
land is lost. Another type of coastal management is hard engineering involves building structures to protect the coast. Some examples of this is a sea
wall, which is a wall set up to prevent the sea eroding an area of land, thishelps prevent flooding, however waves bounce off the wall and scour the beach

Research Paper On Sunset Beach
I took a spin around the oval parking area, finding it to be as crowded as I had expected with all fifty spots filled. The island portion of Sunset Beach
has one of the best and most accessible beaches in North Carolina–it's one of the few that face south––and it has the best of facilities, too with several
showers on the boardwalk and real toilets nearby. Finishing the loop I realized that I had two choices–find a spot to park up the road as far as three or
four blocks away or go next door to the fishing pier and pay to park. I chose to pay. I could afford it. My Tommy Bahama beach chair has shoulder
straps so it was on my back. My cooler with soft drinks, ice, and a big sub for my dinner was in my right hand and my umbrella was over my shoulder

From the Broadbeach study, the investigation of offshore...
From the Broadbeach study, the investigation of offshore wave conditions erosion rates and sandbar morphodynamics, show that Broadbeach
experienced some unusual experience during the study period. Given that the wave conditions on the Gold Coast were considerably less energetic,
results suggest that Broadbeach's beach is significantly vulnerable and is more easily eroded than other beaches reported. Time series of offshore
wave conditions combined with the evolution of the beach volume also suggests that the studied beach is more exposed to high erosion rates in the
presences of NE to E swell. This trend is in agreement with visual observation all along the Gold Coast. However, the second and third storm wave
events are estimated to be of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
During the first and second extreme events mentioned in the study, the 150m wide Coolangatta Beach experienced the most intense erosion because
waves did not reach the vegetated dune. The beach then recovered markedly, which can be explained by the presence of the sand bypassing system
and sheltering from he SE high waves (Castelle et al., 2007).
The evolution of measured beach volumes over the study period strongly suggests that the Gold Coast beaches are not able to withstand a powerful
succession of extreme vents. The first high–wave event strongly weakened the beaches, which did not recover before the second high–wave event of a
magnitude not unusual along the Gold Coast. However, in these two cases, the storms resulted in surprisingly high erosion rates. Data from a more
in–depth investigation of Broadbeach, using video imagery, suggest that outer bar decay, resulting in a lack of protection of the sub–aerial beach, may
explain this high erosion.
The present results show that high–energy easterly swells have a considerable destructive power on both northern and southern Gold Coast beaches.
Even though no tropical cyclone directly crossed the Gold Coast, which would have resulted in much higher–energy waves and a more severe storm
surge, the erosion measured is the most substantial of the past 30 years. The Gold Coast beaches investigated lost between 34 and 52m3/m, which, in
terms of beach nourishment, is an extremely large amount of sand. This suggests hat

Cronulla Beach is a popular tourist attraction and attracts many beachgoers from all over Sydney. It is located on a southern Sydney peninsular,
surrounded by Botany Bay to the north, Bate Bay to the east, Port Hacking to the south, and Gunnamatta Bay to the west. On the 14th of March 2011,

were: * What impacts local residents and businesses have on Cronulla Beach. * How people are using Cronulla Beach. * What management strategies

Because of the cost involved, beach nourishment is only used where other strategies prove to be ineffective. Beach Nourishment: Beach
nourishment is the physical transfer of sand from an area of excess to where it is being eroded. This often involves dredging and transport of sand
by truck or through pipeline. Because of the cost involved, beach nourishment is only used where other strategies prove to be ineffective. 1. What
impacts have local residents and businesses had on Cronulla Beach? The real impact regarding local residents and businesses on Cronulla beach
is their influence on the government as well as their input and suggestions on points of improvement for the Beach. After all, these are the people
that are going to be affected the most from any changes occurring. For example the sea wall at Cronulla Beach is not the most attractive thing, yes
it is highly beneficial but the local residents and businesses that have to look at it all the time, may not be as pleased as the government is with the

Barbary Wars
Is it possible that the religious friction between Muslims and American Christians was caused by a single historical event? If so, Thomas Kidd, the
author of American Christians and Islam, points to the Barbary wars as a critical dispute that may explain the modern global religious conflict. In his
book, Kidd addresses the global war between Christians and Muslims from the colonial period to the age of terrorism. By tracing the role of Islam in the
minds of American Christians, intimidation combined with a lust for conversion is revealed. Kidd notes that during his research he found Western
Christians writings from the 19th century that stands in continuity with contemporary themes of Islam.

Kidd recognizes the most influential European literature over early America as Humphrey Prideaux's The True Nature of Imposture Displayed in the
Life of Mahomet. In Prideaux's piece, he proposes Mohammad as a case study in religious fakery contrary to Christianity's authenticity. Prideaux
argued that Mohammad had created the scheme of Islam to gain rule over Arabia. Kidd notes that the impact of Prideaux's assessment can still be seen
today.
Although escalated after 9/11, suspicion of Muslims among American Christians unquestionably existed before. Through exploring texts from the 19th
century written for American Christians, Thomas Kidd identifies the Barbary Wars as an instrumental incident leading to the same stigmatization of
Muslims that can be observed today. To break the cycle of religious discrimination in America, it is necessary to understand the history of this dogmatic
opposition and learn to live with each other peacefully in our neoteric world community. It is of the utmost importance to stand up for religious

The Holderness Coastline Essay examples
The Holderness Coastline
The infamous Holderness Coastline is located on the East coast of Yorkshire, stretching from Flamborough Head to Spurn Point. In the last 2000
years the coastline has retreated by almost 400m and since Roman times over 28 villages have disappeared into the sea between Bridlington and
Spurn Head. About a million years ago the Yorkshire coastline was a line of chalk cliffs almost 32km west of where it now is. During the Ice Age
deposits of soft boulder clay were built up against these cliffs to form the new coastline. It is this soft sand and clay which is easily eroded by the
action of waves, as the ocean slowly claims back the region it used to occupy.

This is evident at both Great Cowden and Easington.
The Holderness Coastline is also extremely exposed with little protection. The original coastline before the ice age consisted mainly of chalk, and is
still present today at Flamborough Head where a headland has formed as chalk is much more resistant to coastal erosion than the boulder clay. This
outcrop of land provides some shelter, although it is minimal, as the stretch of coastline down to Spurn Head is over 50km long, most experiencing
almost head on dominant waves. The coastline is also exposed to strong North/North–East winds, which co–enside with a rather generous fetch.
Destructive waves are a result, which erode the beaches and attack the foot of the cliffs, removing masses of clay in suspension, resulting in strong
marine erosion.
The material eroded and transported elsewhere results in little material left to form beaches, which act as a barrier to protect the cliff line from tides,
currents and storms, therefore the sea's processed are able to keep cutting back the cliff line.
The weather also has a large influence. Often there are winter storm surges producing higher waves, and higher sea levels, meaning higher energy
erosion. In addition is increased sub–aerial denudation brought about by the heavy rain and strong winds. This often leads to increased slumping and

McNabs Island is located at the mouth of the Halifax Harbor, and its size is approximately 395 hectares. On McNabs Island, the highest elevation
is 45 meters. The elevation of this island rises toward the middle so that the elevation of central land is higher than the edge. Moreover, the
proportion of its flat areas is approximately 20%, which mostly occurs at hilltops and coastal beaches. The proportion of gentle and moderate slopes
are around 25%, and most of them occur in the middle area of the island; the proportion of the steep slopes is about 30% which are located near and

On the opposite, if there is a flat or gentle ground, and some kinds of vegetation covering, the volume and speed of overland flow will decrease.
For the coastal environment and processes of the island, the low energy waves create flat beaches because waves' sediments are pushed by the
wind toward the coastline. On the opposite, the high energy waves create coastal cliffs from wave erosion, and when coastal cliffs are formed,
waves will break and release a great deal of energy. In addition, the island shorelines vary from cobbled stone to fine sand, and with salt marshes in
a few coves such as the one near Maugers Beach. The sandy shores are mostly located at Ives Cove and Wreck Cove. Cobbles shores are mostly
located at Hangmans Beach and Finlays. In addition, there are a few rocky shores in the region such as the one which is located at Maugers Beach or
McNabs Cove. Furthermore, there are some infrastructures near the coast such as building, wharves and streets. For the solar aspect and micro–climate
of McNabs Island, most slopes are facing to the east, west and south, and there only a few north facing slopes. Actually, north slopes always receive
less solar energy, and south slopes are much brighter and warmer (Course Lecture, 2013). However, north facing slopes seem to have a moistersoil and

Reading Review of Pirates of Barbary
The Book is written by Adrian Tinniswood. Before I read the book I think pirates are rude and violent men, after I read the book I think pirates can
be romantic and living for pirates can be jolly. There is always piracy on the sea since the days of commerce. Through the history of Europe, especially
in the seventeenth century, piracy become a part of European history. The pirates seemed mysterious. Even in this wonderful book, there are not many
part describes the pirates, it counties to be mysterious. I think it leaves room for reader's imagination.
The geographical area in which piracy took place was mainly the Mediterranean. Barbary piracy became a very threatening thing. There were many
Muslim pirates attacked ships, enslaved crews, plundered cargoes and held numerous captives in their respective areas or countries, but it was done
by the Muslims, there were even Christians engaged in this event as well. That time they didn't have many job to live for. since piracy can get wealth

opportunity to strike. It became their job.
Who are the victims? Christians. The Barbary Coast was Islamic. It was like a clash of religion, Islamic versus Christians. For Islamic, they thought

The Role Of Erosion In Hawaii

Since of global warming the sea levels are rising in the oceans surrounding Hawaii. So since the ocean levels are rising it is causing the the coast to
slowly erode away because the water keeps pushing up against it. If the ocean keeps rising and eroding the coast slowly the whole island will be
eroded and it will just turn into an ocean.
Since the coast is eroding the people who live on the coast are losing

How Do Sand Beaches Affect Coastal Erosion?
Sand dunes are unique among other coastal landforms as they are formed by wind rather than moving waters; they represent a store of sand above the
landward limits of normal high tides where their vegetation is not dependent on the inundation of seawater for stability (French, 2001). During a storm,
waves can reach the dune front and draw the sand onto the beach to form a storm beach profile; in normal seasons the wind blows the sand back to the
dunes. The presence of vegetation in coastal areas improves slope stability, consolidates sediment and reduces wave energy moving onshore; therefore,
it protects the shoreline from erosion. It is very successful in estuarine conditions (low energy environment), but not on the open coast (high energy

Barrier Beaches of Long Island, NY Essay
Barrier Beaches of Long Island, NY There are many different types of coasts that exist throughout the United States. The south shore of Long Island
has a unique types of coast known as a barrier beach. Barrier beaches are long narrow land forms that are composed of sand and other lose sediments.
These sediments are brought together by the actions of waves, currents and storm surges. Barrier beaches are subject to constant changes by the same
forces. Sand is constantly eroded in one area an deposited in another. Barrier coasts are important for a number of reasons; they protect the mainland of

Long Island is famous for its sandy ocean beaches. Between the barrier beach and the main coast is the Great South Bay. The beaches and dunes have
very different characteristics. The sandy beach is the junction of land and ocean. The sandy beach consists of two zones, the swash zone and the
drift line. The swash zone is the area of wet sand, caused by the incoming wave. The drift line is formed by the dead seaweed and other aquatic
plants. Behind the sandy beach is the primary dune. The primary dune's main function is to absorb the force of the ocean and protect the great
south bay and the island's main coast. In some cases secondary dunes form. These dunes are behind the primary dune and are therefor protected
from the ocean. This provides the stability necessary for plant growth. Many time a maritime forests will form on secondary dunes. Barrier beaches
are not static, they are constantly being changed (Coastal Change ) by the forces that formed them; waves and wind. One change effecting barrier
beaches is they are moving closer to the main coast. This movement is caused by the rise in sea level. As the sea level rises waves crash higher and
higher upon the beach, as they do this the dunes are pushed back. There are also seasonal changes in the barrier beaches. During stormy seasons sand
is removed from the beach and deposited off shore on the longshore bar. During calm season waves redeposit sand upon the beach and the beach grows.

Coastal Erosion
Coastal erosion is known as the natural removal of land and sand caused by changing wave conditions, coastal erosion is also caused by storm events
which creates a massive amount of destruction to the beach and can put building and infrastructure in potential danger (SES, 2016). Some of the
factors that affect coastal erosion include: strength of waves, weather as well as human activity can all negatively impact the amount of erosion (A.
Jackson, 2016). Beaches are an important part of the world's ecosystem for they provide homes for many species of animals such as: birds, crabs,
invertebrates, turtle eggs, etc. Beaches also provide services such as sediment storage and transport, wave dissipation and associated buffering against

Breakwaters are generally made from natural rocks, concrete or the combination of both and run parallel to the shoreline which a prone to erosion.
Breakwaters are meant to take the force of the waves and therefore the beaches are protected. The pros to installing breakwaters include: the fact they

Barbary Coast War Essay
The Barbary Coast War We've finally put those pirates to a stop. It was all hard effort for our warriors. The cause of this conflict may have been
because of how powerful we were after the revolutionary war. This warfare was along the Mediterranean Sea. For some reason, the Barbary States, such
as Tunisia, Algiers, Morocco, and Tripoli, felt that the American merchant ships should've been destroyed. They also felt that the sailors aboard the
merchant ships should've been held ransom. So as the years continued, they would attack American and European ships which traded certain goods
around Europe. European governments decided to pay the Barbary States tribute, which was money paid to another country in return... Show more

There were many battles on the coast of the Barbary States. One major battle took place on February 16, 1804, along the Tripoli harbor. The U.S
warship Philadelphia began to sink near the Tripoli coast. Its sailors were already held captive, as the pirates tried to use the ship. There was about
307 of the sailors who were held captive. There was a great chance that the pirates were from Tripoli. Lieutenant Stephen Decatur, a well known
leading sailor, saw this as a problem. Even though the pirates had already took the ship, he didn't want them to use Philadelphia. Lieutenant
Decatur decided to burn down the Philadelphia so that it wouldn't be used by the pirates. The American sailors were still aboard and imprisoned
by the pirates as Decatur burned it down. He had no choice but to destroy the ship led by the cruel pirates. This was a major battle of the Barbary
Coast War and is very popular today. Though it was a major battle, it wasn't the end of The Barbary Wars. The ending of the wars was a joyful
ending. Earlier this year, a small clan of American marines marched 600 miles through the rough Sahara and captured Tripoli. This was a major victory
that inspired the U.S to have confidence with foreign threats to our security and our

Erosion of Shorelines Essays
Erosion of Shorelines
The erosion of shorelines is a natural process that can have beneficial or adverse impacts on the creation and maintenance of habitats. Sands and
gravels eroded from the shores of coastal bays maintain the beach as a natural barrier between the open water and coastal wetlands. Beaches move
back and forth onshore, offshore and along shore with changing wave conditions. The finer–grained silts and clays derived from the erosion of
shorelines are sorted and carried as far as the waters of wetlands or tidal flats, where benefits are derived from addition of the new material. However,
excessively high sediment loads can smother submerged aquatic vegetation beds, cover shellfish beds and tidal flats, fill in riffle ... Show more content

The longshore drift shapes the coastline by carrying sand from sites of high wave activity to those of low wave activity. The volume of sand carried
away from or delivered to different points along the coast can be as much as 2,000 cubic meters per day (71,000 cubic feet), enough sand to fill an
Olympic–sized swimming pool (Nepf).
The seepage of ground water and the overland flow of surface water runoff also contribute to the erosion of shorelines (http://www.epa.gov/OWOW
/NPS/MMGI/Chapter6/ch6–4.html). The role of ground water is most important wherever permeable subsurface layers of sand are exposed in high
bluffs along coastal bays. In these areas, the seepage of ground water into the waterway can cause erosion at the point of exit. The surface flow of
upland runoff can also dislodge sediments through the creation of rills and gullies on the shoreline banks and bluffs (http://www.epa.gov/OWOW/NPS
/MMGI/Chapter6/ch6–4.html).
Some amount of natural erosion is necessary to provide the sediment for beaches in estuaries and coastal bays. However, excessive erosion has
occurred in the past due to development. Industrial and private development along the world's coastlines has increased dramatically since the 1970s
(Nepf). Developers and builders completed much of this construction without taking into account the effects of coastal erosion. New buildings were
often placed too close to the existing shoreline so that

My Life Experience
I've never thought of myself as a hero. I never will. However, I must admit that what happened one summer day changed my life forever. When
people ask me, "What was going through your mind" or, "How did it feel" I can't give them a simple answer. Saving someone's life, while putting
your own in jeopardy, is an experience, not a story. I remember waking up that morning being greeted by my younger cousin exclaiming, "We're
going swimming! Please come with us!" Despite already being at the beach, we didn't really enjoy swimming in the bay. Port St. Joe was great
,but the water was dark and less populated. Every once in awhile, we would travel to Panama City Beach to enjoy the beautiful water and obvious
tourist traps. We unloaded the truck and went down to the beach. I was in my paradise. The salty air and dazzling water could make all of my
problems disappear. Not long after being on the beach, my mother and my two cousins ,Caden and Emma, had decided to swim to a sandbar. The
sandbar was close, but the water was a bit rough. I didn't really think anything about it other than to watch my youngest cousin, Emma. Eventually the
water would be around seven feet deep, so my mother held Emma and I swam close to Caden. The waves had grown higher and the undertow was
strong. I could no longer reach the bottom of the ocean. We were good swimmers , so I didn't worry much. Then I heard something that would change
my life and make me reach potential I didn't know I had. It wasn't

Coastal Geographic Environment Analysis
How Natural Processes Operate at Coastal Geographic Environment
Natural Processes are actions or events that have natural causes, which result in natural events. The three main coastal environment processes that
operate at Muriwai are Coastal Erosion, Coastal Transportation and Coastal Deposition.
The elements that interact to produce natural processes are wind, waves and tides. Each phenomenon at Muriwai's coastal geographic environment has
been produced by interaction.
Coastal Erosion is a process at Muriwai that gradually wears away the rock particles of the earth's surface, transporting them to another location. There
are many types of processes that cause erosion at Muriwai such as wave erosion, wind erosion and wave refraction. ... Show more content on

These types of erosion have caused the formation of several phenomena at Muriwai.
Motutara Island (stack) was produced by the formation of two caves on either side of the headland –– forming an arch and the roof slowly eroding
away due to vertical erosion.
Fisherman's Rock was produced by cliff retreat when undercutting stones are thrust at the cliff by wave action.
The blowhole was formed by vertical, hydraulic and mechanical erosion causing the cracks and fissures to enlarge over time to produce this hole.
Types of wave erosion operating on the headland have produced the cave.
Wave Refraction is an important process as it influences wave erosion on Otakamiro headland and on the beach at Muriwai (refer to Diagram 1).
Wave Transportation (Longshore Drift) varies spatially due to wave refraction. It is the process by which waves alter their course as they interact in
shallow water with the seabed along the coastline. This process produces wave erosion, which focuses its energy on Otakamiro Point.
Diagram 1
Constructive, Destructive and Dissipative are the types of waves that operate at Muriwai that cause erosion.
Dissipative waves are the waves usually found at Muriwai –– they lose their energy before they reach the shore as they usually break on the offshore
bar. Constructive waves are long waves with little height that leave material at the top of the beach, building it up.
Destructive waves are erosive

Descriptive Vacation
The sky was blue as far as the eyes could see. There were a few white clouds that had a
3–D appearance, like cotton balls strategically placed. The sand was wet and warm under my feet. It was squishing between my toes, but the sand
was not too hot to walk on. The water was not the blue I had expected, the color was some kind of off green color, but it was still beautiful. The
waves were crashing in creating white caps after white caps. The tide rolling in was loud. It wasn't overwhelming, just enough you could close
your eyes and drown out the world if you so desired. The day was warm with a bright sun shining down on us. There was just enough of a breeze to
help the day not feel hot. My daughter said she remembers the water smelling clean, like an ocean mist scented candle. I do not remember a
particular smell. I do remember it didn't smell like fish. We played in the water for hours. I got to much water in my mouth, which was very salty. It
was like I took a salt shaker and emptied it into my mouth. This was my picture–perfect moment I had been waiting for. This moment was not planned.

Erosion Of Beach
As we engineer the shoreline, this is a phase that may compare to the changing or altering the nature of the shoreline in order to keep it stabilized.
The stabilization methods of shoreline range from planting dune grass, to large seawalls using bulldozers or cranes. These methods are short term.
Erosion of beaches caused by human may be greater than nature causing. Replenishing of beaches may consist of pumping sand back out onto the
beach, or building back up sand dunes. This would result in not enough money to replenish the beach. Only the upper part of the beach would be
covered with new sand. This would create a steep beach. Creating the steep beach would increase the rate of erosion. With sand being pumped from the
lagoon, or shelf, this

How The Oceans Can Feed The World

  • 1. How The Oceans Can Feed The World What if saving the oceans meant we could bring food to the hungry? Or something we 're doing because in return it creates jobs for local fishermen and preserves fishermen 's jobs around the globe? It 's even more than an economical quest as well. Saving the oceans can feed the world. As you already know, there are more than a billion people on this planet right now suffering from hunger. Unfortunately, we're expecting this problem to worsen as the world's population continues to grow, which will cause an immediate increase of stress on our food resources. Now that is a huge concern for all of us, since our operational land per capita is already on the decline in both developed and developing countries. Since climate change is happening, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The first thing we need to do is locate the fish, which Oceana has done a great job of doing, fish are conveniently located in the coastal zones of countries, these "coastal zones" are under the control of national jurisdictions, which means each country can manage their own fisheries. It's a good thing that these zones are controlled by national jurisdictions, because if it were done internationally, it would be a lot more difficult for these changes to be put into action. The reasons why we should focus in on these coastal zones, is simply because the fish. There are seven times as many fish in these zones compared to the high seas, which means for us we have seven times more of a change to reestablish a lot of our fisheries, and to feed hungry mouths. There are over 80 different coastal countries throughout the world, which makes it hard to focus on all of them. However, not all 80 coastal countries have a tremendous amount of coastline, so if we were to narrow it down to European countries and 10 more countries with coastlines, it ends up being 90% of all the world's fish catch. Based on Oceania's work here in the United States, we know that there are three key components we have to do in order to bring these fisheries back to their full capacities, and they are: to set limits on how much fish each country can take per ... Hastings was chosen as an area to investigate coastal management because they had three types of hard and soft engineering. Secondly, it has a tourist industry that can be investigated. Thirdly, it has Shoreline Management Plan so the plan can be evaluated. Lastly, it Ties in withtourism and coastal parts of GCSE syllabus that are familiar and understood Key Concepts Longshore drift is movement of sediment along the coastline. The prevailing wind blows waves carrying sediment into the beach at an angle, the waves break on the shore and as the water runs back into the sea it carries the sediment back down the beach, perpendicular to the angle. Soft engineering is working with nature by using natural materials or allowing nature to take back areas. some examples of this is beach nourishment is the process of dumping or pumping sand from elsewhere onto an eroding shoreline which is to create a new beach or to widen the existing beach, this technique is natural and makes the waves lose power travelling across it,However it dosen't last very long and It does not stop erosion,it simply gives the erosional forces (usually waves) something else to erode for awhile, another type of soft engineering is managed retreat which is where Areas of the coast are allowed to erode and flood naturally, this makes the land become an marsh, slowing waves and reducing ersoion, however land is lost. The island portion of Sunset Beach has one of the best and most accessible beaches in North Carolina–it's one of the few that face south––and it has the best of facilities, too with several showers on the boardwalk and real toilets nearby. From the Broadbeach study, the investigation of offshore wave conditions erosion rates and sandbar morphodynamics, show that Broadbeach experienced some unusual experience during the study period. Given that the wave conditions on the Gold Coast were considerably less energetic, results suggest that Broadbeach's beach is significantly vulnerable and is more easily eroded than other beaches reported. Time series of offshore wave conditions combined with the evolution of the beach volume also suggests that the studied beach is more exposed to high erosion rates in the presences of NE to E swell. This trend is in agreement with visual observation all along the Gold Coast. However, the second and third storm wave events are estimated to be of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... During the first and second extreme events mentioned in the study, the 150m wide Coolangatta Beach experienced the most intense erosion because waves did not reach the vegetated dune. The beach then recovered markedly, which can be explained by the presence of the sand bypassing system and sheltering from he SE high waves (Castelle et al., 2007). The evolution of measured beach volumes over the study period strongly suggests that the Gold Coast beaches are not able to withstand a powerful succession of extreme vents. The first high–wave event strongly weakened the beaches, which did not recover before the second high–wave event of a magnitude not unusual along the Gold Coast. However, in these two cases, the storms resulted in surprisingly high erosion rates. Data from a more in–depth investigation of Broadbeach, using video imagery, suggest that outer bar decay, resulting in a lack of protection of the sub–aerial beach, may explain this high erosion. The present results show that high–energy easterly swells have a considerable destructive power on both northern and southern Gold Coast beaches. Even though no tropical cyclone directly crossed the Gold Coast, which would have resulted in much higher–energy waves and a more severe storm surge, the erosion measured is the most substantial of the past 30 years. The Gold Coast beaches investigated lost between 34 and 52m3/m, which, in terms of beach nourishment, is an extremely large amount of sand. This suggests hat ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Beach Nourishment: Beach nourishment is the physical transfer of sand from an area of excess to where it is being eroded. This often involves dredging and transport of sand by truck or through pipeline. Because of the cost involved, beach nourishment is only used where other strategies prove to be ineffective. 1. What impacts have local residents and businesses had on Cronulla Beach? The real impact regarding local residents and businesses on Cronulla beach is their influence on the government as well as their input and suggestions on points of improvement for the Beach. After all, these are the people that are going to be affected the most from any changes occurring. For example the sea wall at Cronulla Beach is not the most attractive thing, yes it is highly beneficial but the local residents and businesses that have to look at it all the time, may not be as pleased as the government is with the idea. • 7. Barbary Wars Is it possible that the religious friction between Muslims and American Christians was caused by a single historical event? If so, Thomas Kidd, the author of American Christians and Islam, points to the Barbary wars as a critical dispute that may explain the modern global religious conflict. In his book, Kidd addresses the global war between Christians and Muslims from the colonial period to the age of terrorism. By tracing the role of Islam in the minds of American Christians, intimidation combined with a lust for conversion is revealed. Kidd notes that during his research he found Western Christians writings from the 19th century that stands in continuity with contemporary themes of Islam. Kidd recognizes the most influential European literature over early America as Humphrey Prideaux's The True Nature of Imposture Displayed in the Life of Mahomet. In Prideaux's piece, he proposes Mohammad as a case study in religious fakery contrary to Christianity's authenticity. Prideaux argued that Mohammad had created the scheme of Islam to gain rule over Arabia. Kidd notes that the impact of Prideaux's assessment can still be seen today. Although escalated after 9/11, suspicion of Muslims among American Christians unquestionably existed before. Through exploring texts from the 19th century written for American Christians, Thomas Kidd identifies the Barbary Wars as an instrumental incident leading to the same stigmatization of Muslims that can be observed today. To break the cycle of religious discrimination in America, it is necessary to understand the history of this dogmatic opposition and learn to live with each other peacefully in our neoteric world community. • 10. The Holderness Coastline Essay examples The Holderness Coastline The infamous Holderness Coastline is located on the East coast of Yorkshire, stretching from Flamborough Head to Spurn Point. In the last 2000 years the coastline has retreated by almost 400m and since Roman times over 28 villages have disappeared into the sea between Bridlington and Spurn Head. About a million years ago the Yorkshire coastline was a line of chalk cliffs almost 32km west of where it now is. During the Ice Age deposits of soft boulder clay were built up against these cliffs to form the new coastline. This is evident at both Great Cowden and Easington. The Holderness Coastline is also extremely exposed with little protection. The original coastline before the ice age consisted mainly of chalk, and is still present today at Flamborough Head where a headland has formed as chalk is much more resistant to coastal erosion than the boulder clay. This outcrop of land provides some shelter, although it is minimal, as the stretch of coastline down to Spurn Head is over 50km long, most experiencing almost head on dominant waves. The coastline is also exposed to strong North/North–East winds, which co–enside with a rather generous fetch. Destructive waves are a result, which erode the beaches and attack the foot of the cliffs, removing masses of clay in suspension, resulting in strong marine erosion. The material eroded and transported elsewhere results in little material left to form beaches, which act as a barrier to protect the cliff line from tides, currents and storms, therefore the sea's processed are able to keep cutting back the cliff line. The weather also has a large influence. Often there are winter storm surges producing higher waves, and higher sea levels, meaning higher energy erosion. Moreover, the proportion of its flat areas is approximately 20%, which mostly occurs at hilltops and coastal beaches. The proportion of gentle and moderate slopes are around 25%, and most of them occur in the middle area of the island; the proportion of the steep slopes is about 30% which are located near and at the coasts. On the opposite, if there is a flat or gentle ground, and some kinds of vegetation covering, the volume and speed of overland flow will decrease. For the coastal environment and processes of the island, the low energy waves create flat beaches because waves' sediments are pushed by the wind toward the coastline. On the opposite, the high energy waves create coastal cliffs from wave erosion, and when coastal cliffs are formed, waves will break and release a great deal of energy. In addition, the island shorelines vary from cobbled stone to fine sand, and with salt marshes in a few coves such as the one near Maugers Beach. The sandy shores are mostly located at Ives Cove and Wreck Cove. Cobbles shores are mostly located at Hangmans Beach and Finlays. • 18. How Do Sand Beaches Affect Coastal Erosion? Sand dunes are unique among other coastal landforms as they are formed by wind rather than moving waters; they represent a store of sand above the landward limits of normal high tides where their vegetation is not dependent on the inundation of seawater for stability (French, 2001). During a storm, waves can reach the dune front and draw the sand onto the beach to form a storm beach profile; in normal seasons the wind blows the sand back to the dunes. The presence of vegetation in coastal areas improves slope stability, consolidates sediment and reduces wave energy moving onshore; therefore, it protects the shoreline from erosion. It is very successful in estuarine conditions (low energy environment), but not on the open coast (high energy ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Long Island is famous for its sandy ocean beaches. Between the barrier beach and the main coast is the Great South Bay. The beaches and dunes have very different characteristics. The sandy beach is the junction of land and ocean. The sandy beach consists of two zones, the swash zone and the drift line. The swash zone is the area of wet sand, caused by the incoming wave. The drift line is formed by the dead seaweed and other aquatic plants. Behind the sandy beach is the primary dune. The primary dune's main function is to absorb the force of the ocean and protect the great south bay and the island's main coast. In some cases secondary dunes form. These dunes are behind the primary dune and are therefor protected from the ocean. This provides the stability necessary for plant growth. Many time a maritime forests will form on secondary dunes. Barrier beaches are not static, they are constantly being changed (Coastal Change ) by the forces that formed them; waves and wind. One change effecting barrier beaches is they are moving closer to the main coast. This movement is caused by the rise in sea level. As the sea level rises waves crash higher and higher upon the beach, as they do this the dunes are pushed back. There are also seasonal changes in the barrier beaches. During stormy seasons sand is removed from the beach and deposited off shore on the longshore bar. During calm season waves redeposit sand upon the beach and the beach grows. ... • 24. Coastal Erosion Coastal erosion is known as the natural removal of land and sand caused by changing wave conditions, coastal erosion is also caused by storm events which creates a massive amount of destruction to the beach and can put building and infrastructure in potential danger (SES, 2016). Some of the factors that affect coastal erosion include: strength of waves, weather as well as human activity can all negatively impact the amount of erosion (A. Jackson, 2016). Beaches are an important part of the world's ecosystem for they provide homes for many species of animals such as: birds, crabs, invertebrates, turtle eggs, etc. Beaches also provide services such as sediment storage and transport, wave dissipation and associated buffering against extreme weather... Breakwaters are meant to take the force of the waves and therefore the beaches are protected. The pros to installing breakwaters include: the fact they can control most average waves at full force "A well–designed floating breakwater can stop waves that are up to 6 1/2 feet high, while their fixed companions can stop waves up to 10 feet high depending on their design and the local environment." They also don't interfere with water flow and so wildlife sill have access to their habitats for the water flow hasn't been affected, they create natural harbors and if a breakwater does get damaged they are affordable to fix. Though breakwaters have pros they also have several cons such as: they don't provide protection to harsh storms though it may reduce the severity of the wave's structures close to beach will still be in harm of being destroyed. They can be expensive to originally build especially if a fixed breakwater is used over a floating breakwater; they can cost millions and require expensive experts to install them since wave dynamics can be extremely complex; they may also cause long term ecological hazards that have not been identified as yet (anon, ... • 25. Barbary Coast War Essay The Barbary Coast War We've finally put those pirates to a stop. It was all hard effort for our warriors. The cause of this conflict may have been because of how powerful we were after the revolutionary war. This warfare was along the Mediterranean Sea. For some reason, the Barbary States, such as Tunisia, Algiers, Morocco, and Tripoli, felt that the American merchant ships should've been destroyed. They also felt that the sailors aboard the merchant ships should've been held ransom. So as the years continued, they would attack American and European ships which traded certain goods around Europe. European governments decided to pay the Barbary States tribute, which was money paid to another country in return... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... There were many battles on the coast of the Barbary States. One major battle took place on February 16, 1804, along the Tripoli harbor. The U.S warship Philadelphia began to sink near the Tripoli coast. Its sailors were already held captive, as the pirates tried to use the ship. There was about 307 of the sailors who were held captive. There was a great chance that the pirates were from Tripoli. Lieutenant Stephen Decatur, a well known leading sailor, saw this as a problem. Even though the pirates had already took the ship, he didn't want them to use Philadelphia. Lieutenant Decatur decided to burn down the Philadelphia so that it wouldn't be used by the pirates. The American sailors were still aboard and imprisoned by the pirates as Decatur burned it down. He had no choice but to destroy the ship led by the cruel pirates. This was a major battle of the Barbary Coast War and is very popular today. Though it was a major battle, it wasn't the end of The Barbary Wars. The ending of the wars was a joyful ending. Earlier this year, a small clan of American marines marched 600 miles through the rough Sahara and captured Tripoli. • 28. Erosion of Shorelines Essays Erosion of Shorelines The erosion of shorelines is a natural process that can have beneficial or adverse impacts on the creation and maintenance of habitats. Sands and gravels eroded from the shores of coastal bays maintain the beach as a natural barrier between the open water and coastal wetlands. Beaches move back and forth onshore, offshore and along shore with changing wave conditions. The finer–grained silts and clays derived from the erosion of shorelines are sorted and carried as far as the waters of wetlands or tidal flats, where benefits are derived from addition of the new material. However, excessively high sediment loads can smother submerged aquatic vegetation beds, cover shellfish beds and tidal flats, fill in riffle ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The longshore drift shapes the coastline by carrying sand from sites of high wave activity to those of low wave activity. The volume of sand carried away from or delivered to different points along the coast can be as much as 2,000 cubic meters per day (71,000 cubic feet), enough sand to fill an Olympic–sized swimming pool (Nepf). The seepage of ground water and the overland flow of surface water runoff also contribute to the erosion of shorelines (http://www.epa.gov/OWOW /NPS/MMGI/Chapter6/ch6–4.html). The role of ground water is most important wherever permeable subsurface layers of sand are exposed in high bluffs along coastal bays. In these areas, the seepage of ground water into the waterway can cause erosion at the point of exit. The surface flow of upland runoff can also dislodge sediments through the creation of rills and gullies on the shoreline banks and bluffs (http://www.epa.gov/OWOW/NPS /MMGI/Chapter6/ch6–4.html). Some amount of natural erosion is necessary to provide the sediment for beaches in estuaries and coastal bays. However, excessive erosion has occurred in the past due to development. Industrial and private development along the world's coastlines has increased dramatically since the 1970s (Nepf). Developers and builders completed much of this construction without taking into account the effects of coastal erosion. New buildings were often placed too close to the existing shoreline so that ... When people ask me, "What was going through your mind" or, "How did it feel" I can't give them a simple answer. Saving someone's life, while putting your own in jeopardy, is an experience, not a story. I remember waking up that morning being greeted by my younger cousin exclaiming, "We're going swimming! Please come with us!" Despite already being at the beach, we didn't really enjoy swimming in the bay. Port St. Joe was great ,but the water was dark and less populated. Every once in awhile, we would travel to Panama City Beach to enjoy the beautiful water and obvious tourist traps. We unloaded the truck and went down to the beach. I was in my paradise. The salty air and dazzling water could make all of my problems disappear. Not long after being on the beach, my mother and my two cousins ,Caden and Emma, had decided to swim to a sandbar. The sandbar was close, but the water was a bit rough. I didn't really think anything about it other than to watch my youngest cousin, Emma. Eventually the water would be around seven feet deep, so my mother held Emma and I swam close to Caden. The waves had grown higher and the undertow was strong. I could no longer reach the bottom of the ocean. We were good swimmers , so I didn't worry much. Then I heard something that would change my life and make me reach potential I didn't know I had. Coastal Geographic Environment Analysis How Natural Processes Operate at Coastal Geographic Environment Natural Processes are actions or events that have natural causes, which result in natural events. The three main coastal environment processes that operate at Muriwai are Coastal Erosion, Coastal Transportation and Coastal Deposition. The elements that interact to produce natural processes are wind, waves and tides. Each phenomenon at Muriwai's coastal geographic environment has been produced by interaction. Coastal Erosion is a process at Muriwai that gradually wears away the rock particles of the earth's surface, transporting them to another location. There are many types of processes that cause erosion at Muriwai such as wave erosion, wind erosion and wave refraction. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... These types of erosion have caused the formation of several phenomena at Muriwai. Motutara Island (stack) was produced by the formation of two caves on either side of the headland –– forming an arch and the roof slowly eroding away due to vertical erosion. It is the process by which waves alter their course as they interact in shallow water with the seabed along the coastline. This process produces wave erosion, which focuses its energy on Otakamiro Point. Diagram 1 Constructive, Destructive and Dissipative are the types of waves that operate at Muriwai that cause erosion. Dissipative waves are the waves usually found at Muriwai –– they lose their energy before they reach the shore as they usually break on the offshore bar. Constructive waves are long waves with little height that leave material at the top of the beach, building it up. Destructive waves are erosive

Erosion of beaches caused by human may be greater than nature causing. Replenishing of beaches may consist of pumping sand back out onto the beach, or building back up sand dunes.
