The Negative Effects Of Cellphone Addiction
Technology has made many advancements through the past few years. Cellphones particularly have
become more advanced and popular. These electronic devices have granted access to an endless
amount of resources you can use to simplify your everyday life. However, the technological
upgrades in cellphones have also provoked an addiction to the excessive use of this electronic. The
cellphone addiction has become very common among many people especially the younger
generations. This addiction compared to other addictions might seem harmless however, its side
affects can be very serious and shouldn't be overlooked. Throughout, my research I have discovered
how a cellphone addiction negatively effects your physical, social, and mental health. Effectively
demonstrating how dangerous a cellphone addiction can be to the individuals who suffer it.
Consequently, one of the things cellphone addiction negatively impacts is physical health. For
example, from my own experience cellphone addiction can lead to hand cramping, eye strain and,
neck pain. However, throughout my researched I found more physical side effects to addictive
cellphone behavior which are more serious. The National Center for Health Research website has an
article titled "Can Cellphones Harm Our Health?" which informs about the toll cellphone addiction
takes on your bodies health. In summary, this article states the findings of studies scientists have
done. The studies investigate how cellphone radiation affects people who

Are Cell Phones Dangerous?
Introduction
In this project, I am going to investigate the question 'are cell phones dangerous'. I will show how a
cell–phone works and how radiation caused by cell–phones may affect you, I will show you
different viewpoints from different sources and go through identifying key points and evaluate their
arguments I will then give you my own opinion based on the facts and research I have conducted.
What is the electromagnetic spectrum?
The electromagnetic spectrum is a range of different Electromagnetic radiation. The radiation is
energy that travels in waves, the electromagnetic spectrum is what is used to describe those waves.
Electromagnetic waves are formed by vibrations electric and magnetic fields. the distance from one
point on one wave to the same exact point on the next wave is known as the wave length. Some
wave lengths can reach the length of 1000 meters to as small as 0.000000000001 meters. Frequency
is another term for describing waves, frequency is how many times a wave is repeated over one
second. Frequency is measured in Hertz; 1 hertz is the same as 1 wave a second, 1 KHz is the same
as 1000 waves a second. 1 MHz is 1 million waves a second and 1 Ghz is 1 billion waves a second.
The electromagnetic spectrum is so vast and us humans can only see a very small fraction of that,
we can only see the visible light, although we use all types of waves in our daily lives, whether it be
using the remote to change the channel or to cook our food

Mobile Phone Radiation Affects Our Health Essay
Introduction In the year 1966, less than 100 million adults across the globe had cell phones.
However, as of 2016, there were 4.23 billion mobile phone users across the globe. The exponential
increase in mobile phone use has made it urgent to determine whether or not mobile phone radiation
poses a health hazard. The question of whether mobile phone radiation affects our health has been
surrounded by controversy since the introduction of mobile phones. For several years, the World
Health Organization (WHO) has assured people that there are no significant risks stemming from
repeated use of mobile phones. However, it included mobile phone radiation to the list of
carcinogenic substances in the year 2011. A carcinogenic substance is a substance that is directly
involved in causing cancer. What exactly is Mobile Phone Radiation? Mobile phone radiation can be
defined as energy travelling through space in form of waves. Since mobile phones use radio
frequency (RF) to make or receive calls, it emits electromagnetic radiation. The radiation emitted by
the mobile phones is classified as non–ionizing. In simpler terms, it does not ionize other molecules;
instead it excites materials into another form of energy. If mobile phone radiation was ionizing, it
would be very harmful as it would ionize molecules causing more radiation effects. Other gadgets
that produce non–ionizing radiation include visible light, microwave and radio waves. It is therefore
true to say that we are in

The Possible Links Between Cellphone Uses and Tumors
1. How do cellphones work? These work by the signals which are transmitted to and can be received
from the base station (usually located close by) through RF wave. RF wave is a type of
electromagnetic wave with a frequency range of 300GHZ widely used in radio communication and
in applications such as heating. RF waves along with FM waves, microwaves, visible light and heat
come under non–ionizing radiation. RF does not cause cancer. These waves are different from
radiations i.e. x–rays, gamma rays and UV rays. These radiations can destroy the chemical bonds
that make up DNA (Deoxyribonucleic acid). At higher levels the RF waves can raise the temperature
of the body. But the RF waves emitted by the cell phones are generally of lower energy level and
hence it does not affect body temperature. 2. How are people exposed to RF waves? RF waves
require more energy for long distance transmission. The energy at the transmitting antenna in
cellphone will greater than the energy received by the receiving antenna of the cellphone (loss of
energy during long distance transmission). When a customer communicates using cellphone which
is in contact with their ear (either left or right) the maximum energy at the transmitting antenna of
the cellphone during communication will be directly absorbed by that ear. The ear that is closest to
the phone will absorb more energy that the ear that farther away. It also depends on factors such as:
1. Amount of time the cellphone is being used

Mobile Phone Radiation and Their Effects on Human Health
The effect of mobile phone radiation on human health is the subject of recent interest and study, as a
result of the enormous increase in mobile phone usage throughout the world (as of June 2009, there
were more than 4.3 billion users worldwide). Mobile phones use electromagnetic in the microwave
range. Other digital wireless systems, such as data communication networks, produce similar
radiation. The WHO has classified mobile phone radiation on the IARC scale into Group 2B –
possibly carcinogenic. That means that there "could be some risk" of carcinogenicity, so additional
research into the long–term, heavy use of mobile phones needs to be conducted. Some national
radiation advisory authorities have recommended measures to minimize ... Show more content on

In 2006 a large Danish study about the connection between mobile phone use and cancer incidence
was published. It followed over 420,000 Danish citizens for 20 years and showed no increased risk
of cancer. The German Federal Office for Radiation Protection (Bundesamt für Strahlenschutz)

Social Media And Its Effect On Children
Sustained attention was defined by one's ability to maintain prolonged focus during repetitive
activities. Researchers found that the ability to remain focused on a single task was most correlated
with the volume of media consumption, social media usage, multi–screening behaviour, and when
the individual adopted a technological lifestyle. As the use and consumption of technology
increased, the ability to focus for a longer term decreased. Age was a variable heavily correlated
with these metrics, however age alone cannot be tied to sustained attention. However, not all of the
results were against using technology. Remarkably, early tech adopters and heavy users of social
media showed an increase in the number of high attention bursts. Selective attention was defined by
one's ability to maintaining response in the face of distracting or competing stimuli. It was found
that those that spend more time multi–screening have significantly lower selective attentional
scores, and those with higher scores actively chose fewer distractions. However, a participant 's
ability to filter out distractions is a result of their current surroundings, and not their use of media, or
device use. If consumers were over or under stimulated by an information source, multi–screeners
would switch their attention to something else. Alternating attention was defined by one's ability to
shift attention between tasks demanding different cognitive skills. From data collected, it appears
that digital

Effects Of Smartphones On Teenagers
The widespread use of smartphones has seriously affected the behavior and mental health of
teenagers. The smart phone fundamentally changes the daily life of teenagers, from social
interaction to mental health. Adolescent depression and suicide rates increased significantly. This
deterioration is largely related to the use of mobile phones. Today's youth and friends spend
significantly less time together, fewer appointments and fewer hours of sleep, thus increasing
loneliness. Teenagers who use electronic devices for three hours or more a day are more likely to
kill themselves than the average person. I checked the online, now the boy a lot of depression but
the proportion of adolescent girls depression than boys, youth suicide rate is very high, these are
related to the use of mobile phones. The use of social networks has made teenagers less and less
happy. They spend less time with their real–life friends and spend more time on Snapchat, Instagram
and Facebook. If the use of electronic equipment two hours a day or more, will have a significant
impact on mental health and sleep time, and now, teenagers use electronic equipment every day the
average time is 2.5 hours. Therefore, proper use of time can help prevent young people from falling
into the vortex of bad habits. The risk of cell phone radiation is generally believed to be: first, to
double the risk of brain cancer. Using a cell phone is more harmful than smoking to the human body.

Adnan Syed's Innocence
When one is guilty, it means that he or she is "culpable of or responsible for a specified
wrongdoing" or, "having committed an offense, crime, violation, or wrong, especially against moral
or penal law; justly subject to a certain accusation or penalty." If someone is charged as guilty, they
have broken a law or performed an unjust or immoral act to deserve punishment. However, this does
not mean that through reasonable suspicion that an individual can be determined as guilty. It means
that "a defendant is innocent until proven guilty. In other words, the prosecution must prove, beyond
a reasonable doubt, each essential element of the crime charged." In other words, a particular person
must be proven guilty of a crime through proof and evidence. In the story provided by Serial, Sarah
Koenig narrates the case of the murder of Hae Min Lee. Seventeen years ago, on January 13, Hae
Min Lee, a senior at Woodlawn High School, was reported missing. Weeks later, her body is found
and the cause of her death was determined to be manual strangulation. Her ex–boyfriend, Adnan
Musud Syed, was convicted of her murder and sentenced to life plus thirty years in prison. The case
against him was mainly based on the story of one witness, Jay Wilds. Now, past reporter and
journalist, Sarah Koenig is reopening this case to find out what really happened. Through
documents, police interrogations, testimonies, and interviews, she collects evidence to look for the

How they are made:
Radio waves are made by a range of transmitter, depending on its wavelengths. They are also given
off by stars, sparks and lightening that is why you can hear interference on your radio while in a
thunderstorm.
Uses:
Radio waves are the lowest frequencies in the electromagnetic spectrum, and are mainly used for
communications with others.
Dangers:
Large doses of radio waves are believed to be dangerous it can cause you cancer, leukaemia and
many other dangerous and fatal disorders which can cause you death. Some people have said that
the very low frequency field from overhead power cables near their homes has affected their health.

Negative Effects Of Cell Phones
Communication has always been at the forefront of technology. The better we improve our
communications, the faster we as a human race develop and continue to innovate on the technology
of today's time. Since the late 1800s, there have been various devices created to make long distance
communications easier and more efficient. From the telegraph to the telephone to the technology we
have today, we have succeeded in bringing everyone in the world a little closer. But in the past ten
years, the examples of ease in communications has never been more prevalent. In fact, a survey
conducted by the Pew Research Center discovered that over ninety one percent of adult Americans
owned a cellular device and those results also apply to other european countries as well. The cell
phone industry has grown to become some of the biggest companies in the world and make a
product that is always on us. Which is why many worry when they hear that mobile phones emit a
certain radiation called radio frequency (RF) radiation. This radiation is regulated by the Federal
Communications Commision and has been extensively researched, but many people still wonder if
this cell phone radiation is safe. Some people say that this radiation is completely free from harm
and has zero to a few minor health defects on its consumers, while others believe that the radiation
is poisonous and has many negative effects on users. The correct side is the latter and people should
know the impact that these devices have on their well being and whether they are truly safe from the
technology they own. To start off, a major concern in the community of researchers who study radio
frequency radiation is the correlation between it and the increased risk of health defects. A common
theme brought up while discussing the effects on consumers from cellular phone radiation is the
consistent patterns shown the in development of brain tumors. While many may argue that the
radiation that emits from cellular devices is not powerful enough to cause any real damage and is
also deemed safe by the Federal Communications Commision, they do not take into consideration
the lengthy exposure that may be brought from an extended period of time such as ten to twenty
years.

Can Cell Phones Harm our Health? Essay
Is there dangerous radiation coming from our cell phones? Over the past few years there has been
concern about our health when it comes to cell phones. Some people say that cell phones are
dangerous because there is harmful radiation coming from them. Others say that cell phones are
safe. However, cell phones emit 900–1800 MHz radiofrequency electromagnetic fields during calls
which effects the protein structures in mice and humans (Eid 573). Therefore, cell phones can be
dangerous to humans. Most studies that show that there is no harmful effects from cell phone use are
often industry funded (Gandhi 38). On the other hand, there are many studies that have been
conducted that show that cell phones do correlate with harmful effects on the ... Show more content

According to the study "The thickness of the control group and the exposed group would be similar,
but the recovery group would be off by a lot" (Eid). For example, "the mean thickness in sclera in
the control group was 3.51+/–0.19, 3.55+/–0.55 in the exposed group, and only 0.69+/–0.19 in the
recovery group" (Eid). Your sclera is the white of your eye and acts as the eye's protective outer coat
(Sclera). This means that the eyes of the newly born mice are becoming softer and less protective.
This can be dangerous because the eye needs to be protected because it has many important fibers
inside and seeing is an important part of life. Not only does the use of cell phones affect protein
structures, but there is a possibility that they can also cause salivary gland tumors, impact male
fertility, and cause leukemia (Gandhi 40–41). "An Israeli study found that there was a significant
increase in the risk of developing parotid gland tumors, a tumor in the gland in the cheek below the
ear" (Gandhi 40). Cell phones can affect male fertility if the phone is carried around in the male's
front pocket. "It significantly impairs sperm morphology, motility, viability, and count" (Gandhi 40).
Not only does it affect the fertility, but it can also influence the wellbeing of the offspring. If the
sperm gets genetically altered then that alteration can carry on into the embryo. According to F. Eid

1) Sleeping disorder :Most of the teens keep their smart phones nearby while sleeping to respond to
calls and texts . They feel pressurized to remain reachable around the clock. It leads to sleep

Teens are more likely to respond to calls, text while driving, and riding than adults. They talk and

The type of radiation cell phones give off is called radio frequency (RF) radiation. This radiation can
go through your body and cause major damage to your tissues and cells. In fact, the World Health
Organization (WHO) even classified this type of radiation as a possible 2B carcinogen (Burrell).
There are also thousands of studies saying cell phones cause cancer, one study is the Interphone
Study, this study concluded that "regular use of a cell phone by adults can significantly increase the
risk of gilomas by 40% with 1640 hours or more of use" (Burrell). This equals out to about 30
minutes per day for ten years. Another study done by the Hardell Research Group concluded that
using cell phones gives you an increased risk of developing gilomas or acoustic neuromas (Burrell).
Another study done in the UK in 2013 studied 790,000 women and found that women using cell
phones at least 10 hours a day are 2 1/2 times more likely to acquire an acoustic neuroma (Burrell).
In the 1990s, at the University of Washington, Professor Lai linked cell phone radiation exposure
directly to single–stranded DNA breaks. "This is important because, micronuclei proliferation
indicates a type of DNA damage strongly associated with cancer" (Burrell). Not only can cell
phones give you two different types of deadly brain tumors, but it can also give you eye cancer,
lymph node cancer, breast cancer, thyroid cancer, stem cell cancer, leukemia, paratoid malignant
tumors, cancer of the pituitary gland, melanomas, and it can damage your DNA, which in turn can
lead to cancer (Burrell). To conclude, major damage can be done to your brain and whole body if

Cell phones/smart phones would be in the non–ionizing category because they use a low to mid
frequency. In this diagram you can see the frequency for cell phones/smart phones is in the range
from 0 to 10¹º in hertz (Hz). Furthermore the group also mentioned that, even though the frequency
for non–ionizing radiation is less dangerous, it is still possible to have side effects that may affect to
our personal lives. There was a class where at the end we had a very brief discussion about radiation

Dangers Of Cell Phones
Do you know the health risks of a cell phone? Many people buy cell phones to make their lives
easier but people tend to ignore the fact that a cell phone can be very dangerous. When you see cell
phone companies advertising their next generation phone, they talk about the new updates and how
this new phone can be beneficial to your life. But they don't want you to know that cell phones can
cause a lot of health risks. (Cell) telephones initially turned out to be generally accessible in the
United States in the 1990s, however their utilization has expanded drastically from that point
forward. Alongside the huge and as yet developing number of children and grown–ups using cell
phones, the measure of time individuals spend on their telephones has likewise risen forcefully in
late decades. Mobile phones (counting smart cell phones) emit a type of vitality known as
radiofrequency (RF) waves, so a few concerns have been raised about the security of cell phone
utilize. As for growth, concern concentrates on whether mobile phones may build the danger of
mind tumors or different tumors in the head and neck area. Studies have shown that mobile phones
with headaches, DNA damage, memory loss, ear ache, fatigue & many more problems. Cell phone
companies should show the health risks and the long–term health effects of owning a cell phone. A
study by an article called Clinical Journal Of Oncology Nursing proves that cell phones can cause
brain tumors. This article states that "Cell Phones And Other Similar Technology Increase The Risk
Of Brain Tumors" (Sharon, 2008). This article Claims that features have energized the myth that cell
phones cause malignancy, especially cerebrum disease. As indicated by an overview by (Sharon,
2008), around 30% of Americans trust the myth. Cell phones are obviously unmistakable in the
public arena. Measurements demonstrate that 79% of the U.S. populace and 90% of European and
Asian youths have a mobile phone (Infoplease, 2008) (Janssen, 2005). Cell phones are advantageous
and can be utilized at any area. New innovations such as cameras, PC information are stockpiling
with downloads, and wake–up calling have prompted expanded utilization (Janssen, 2005). Mobile

The Effects Of Cell Phones And Other Electronic Devices
Instead of obtaining information only through reading text, visual arguments provide more
conveniences for viewers to understand the information by a quick glance at the given images,
which are related to the main idea of the information. Compared with text information, in–text
visuals make the arguments to be more attractive and vivid, which can inspire readers to think and
affect their ideas directly. This report will focus on two informative images "Radiation from Cell

In the image, the author uses lots of specific examples to show the sources and uses of radiation
frequency in human daily life, such as mobile phones, TV Broadcast and wireless Data. By using
things, which people are familiar with, to explain how different intensities of radiation work and
how strong they are, this method makes scientific things to be easily understand by readers and raise
readers ' emotional responses according to their own using experience. Appeal to pathos, the sense
of familiarity causes people to connect the image information to their own experiences and be more
interested about the author 's idea. Especially, cell phone radiation using is a public concern because
most people use cell phone frequently in their daily life. The idea of "there is no threat"[2] emphasis
that people do not need to worry about the cell phone radiation. Also, the two significant colors used
in the visual is green and yellow. Green color tend to mind feelings of calm[3] and it gives a sense
of safety. By giving green as the background color for Non–ionizing radiation, viewers can get
author 's point that the non–ionizing radiation is safety for human 's health and their application can
be used with full confidence. Therefore, putting cell phone under non–ionizing radiation is a
metaphor that emphasis the radiation from cell phone will not hurt human health. In contrast, bright

Mobile Phones : The Negative Effects Of Cell Phone
In 2011, the IARC, International Agency for Research on Cancer, said that the radiation of the cell
phone you use every day could be cancerous and have long–term effects. Although, the negative
effects of cell phones are dangerous and possibly deadly they are also not actually scientifically
proven. The negative effects aren't proven because there isn't any actual evidence to support them.
Negative effects aside, there are still many advantages to cell phones. Nowadays, cell phones carry
music, games, social media apps and communication resources that make life entertaining and easy.
Cellular phones have grown into society as a way for us to stay connected with loved ones, friends
and even strangers, but cell phones can be very addictive in ways which can affect your brain and
cause cancer. The cellular phone was first invented in the 19th century and is still used to this day.
The purpose of the phone is to be able to communicate with people in different areas, regions and
countries. This is shown when the author says, "The telephone first appeared in the late 19th century
as a largely mechanical device and continued to develop throughout the 20th century based
primarily on analog electronics." This means that, the cell phone has developed during time, going
from a small pocket device with an antenna and a beeper to a touchscreen mp3 player, videogame
console, web searcher, camera, calculator and communication device. In the modern age a cell
phone is almost a "requirement" since everyone from ages 10+ have one sticking out of their
pockets. While it is a "requirement" it is also a luxury, because of how some companies modernize
their inventions and add many new features some people can only afford the old, simple ones or
can't even afford one at all. Don't you ever just sit and wonder how people lived before the cell
phone even existed? How they communicated from different places or what they did for fun?
Nowadays people can barely live without their phones and is considered a punishment for many
kids in their households if they don't follow instructions or are bad. Well, that's what brings out such
beauty to the invention! The many advantages the cell phone provides us with is incredible,

Cell Phone Safety And Safety
Cell phones have been a major part of everyday life by helping people connect with each other
instantaneously. Even though cell phones and their benefits are easy to recognize, the safety of cell
phone use has been debated because of the safety of the cell phone radiation. The safety of cell
phone radiation that is emitted from cell phones is a controversial topics, debating claims such as
whether it has a correlation with cancer or tumors, if children are affected by it more than adults are,
and by whether or not it is safe cannot be decided because of how recent the adoption of cell phones
are (procon.org). One large debate in the topic of cell phone safety, and the safety of the radiation
that is emitted from cell phones, is whether or not it can cause cancer. The radiation emitted from
cell phones is a radiofrequency electromagnetic field, and is the controversial topic at hand. Some
believe that cell phone radiation cannot cause cancer of any kind. The argument here is that the cell
phone radiation that is emitted from cell phones in not powerful enough to cause cancer, while
others believe that it still could. The radiation emitted from cell phones is argued to be non–ionizing,
which means that it "produces molecules called ions that have either too many or too few electrons."
The imbalance in ions is what is blamed for the development of cancer. Even though the argument
could be true, there is no credit or no support for how the conclusion of this argument, that cell
phone radiation is non–ionizing, has been found (qtd. in procon.org pro 2). On the contrary, a study
was conducted by the IARC, or the International Agency for Research on Cancer, that labeled cell
phone radiation as a possible carcinogen. The study was conducted by 31 scientists, and concluded
that the radiofrequency electromagnetic field that cell phones, radios, and televisions emit are group
2B carcinogens, which are "possibly carcinogenic to humans." This study provides more sound
evidence than the other side of the argument because it gives credibility to the argument by citing
research that was completed by an institution (qtd. in procon.org con 6). The opposite viewpoint
states that there are not any government agencies in the

safety was irrefutable. I think that since cell phones are such a highly debated topic, it was an
awesome subject to tackle, and I hope this paper can help people think twice about cell phone safety.
Unseen Dangers: The Reality of Cell Phones The Industrial Revolution marked the beginning of

George Zysman provides an excellent explanation, "This is especially impressive when we consider
that the early phones were little more than radios, while the modern ones are essentially
sophisticated computers capable of hundreds of millions of calculations per second" (109). Today,
cell phones are devices many people cannot live without, which is evident in the exponential growth
of cell phones users. According to a United Nations Telecom Agency report, there were about 6
billion cell phone subscriptions at the end of 2011, "with one cell phone account for roughly 86 of
every 100 people" (Canadian Press). The modern "smartphone" is becoming the most desired
communication device available. Nearly all businesspeople utilize the technology to stay current on
their work tasks, and nearly every common layperson is impelled to possess these devices for
entertainment and service applications. "Smartphones have... a real Web browser and a variety of
other services, including GPS, a camera and a wide variety of other applications" (Sinisalo 6). The
capabilities of modern cell phones have undoubtedly marked an unprecedented shift in convenient
communication, entertainment, and service technology. However, since cell phones first debuted on
the market, and continuing until present day, there has been a startling misconception regarding the
safety of cell phones. When the cell phone industry began growing in the 1980s, the industry

The Increasing Rate Of Mobile Phones
The increasing rate of mobile phone use can be detrimental and can cause many health related issues
among adolescents. According to WebMD (2016), children and kids spend more than seven hours a
day on their phones, which is nearly fifty hours per week. Nowadays, many children and kids are
exposed to cell phones as being part of their daily lives: texting, calling, using them as alarm clocks,
listening to music, watching videos, playing games etc. The radioactive waves exposed from cell
phones poses many potential risks to children and kids which affects the psychological and
neurological health. In Canada, youth in the age group from thirteen to twenty four is considered to
be the largest group of mobile phone users (Be Web Aware, ... Show more content on

It might be a misconception that the radio waves would only be absorbed around the ear; however,
the radiation from the mobile phone can easily penetrate deeply into the brain. Since the nervous
system for youth is still in development, youth tends to have a higher risk of developing brain
tumors which then leads to cancer compared to adults. The increasing dependence upon mobile
phones as the primary source of communication can cause high level of anxiety and stress in
children. The constant ringing sounds of notifications of messages during the night can cause poor
sleeping quality and increases the sense of anxiety. Moreover, the instant reply can bring elation but
in the case of delayed response, the elation feeling turns into disappointment. Also, it has been
proven that car accidents are the leading causes of death of youth because of the distraction of cell
phone use during driving. According to the University of Alabama at Birmingham (2008), children
were fourty three percent more likely to be struck by an oncoming vehicle while crossing the road
with their phones. The constant peer pressure and need to fit in can cause tremendous stress on
children where they feel the need to have the newest Iphone as well when many of their classmates
have it too. Mobile phone use can be seen as disturbances and distractions which impacts youth in a
way where it creates higher stress levels for

Growing up in a technology based society has its perks, our society has endless amounts of
information at our finger tips. But, the increase in cell phone usage has brought up many concerns
relating to our health. When I think about these health concerns, I think about my mother lecturing
me, "Katheryn Paige Leyde, take your phone out of your front pockets right now!" I would role my
eyes, and pull my phone out of my pocket. I never really thought of technology as a health hazard,
but my mother had read an article; stating that trends in research show, technology can cause
infertility, hearing loss or even cancer from the electromagnetic field that cell phones give off.
Hopefully with the research I present to you, you too will think twice about the next time you put
your phone in your pocket. In the article, Association between mobile phone use and semen quality:

between cell phone radiation and semen in men. Electromagnetic fields affect sperm in males,
resulting in infertility. In the systemic review portion of the article it is presented, "mobile phone use

How Cell Phones Can Harm Children
How Cell Phones Can Harm Children As of 2013, cell phones rank number one for causes of car
accidents, yet it seems almost impossible to go anywhere without seeing a cell phone in a person's
hand or attached to their ear ("Two–thirds of Adults Use a Cell Phone"). In the past thirty years, cell
phones have started to pop up everywhere and have increased tremendously in popularity since.
Worldwide, almost five million cell phones are in use today ("Cell Phone Use Linked"). Many
parents understand the convenience and helpfulness of cell phones, but many more parents do not
realize the dangers that cell phone usage can bring to children. Cell phones put children at risk for
behavioral problems, cancer, and even death. First, cell phones can have an effect on the way
children communicate and interact with others, which affects their behavior, causing challenges such
as hyperactivity, as well as obedience and emotional issues. Cell phones do not only affect children
that use them, they can also affect children in the womb. Dr. Leeka Kheifets, an epidemiologist at
the University of California Los Angeles, led a study that found that, "children whose mothers who
used cell phones while pregnant and who also use the cell phones themselves were 50 percent more
likely to have behavioral problems" (qtd. in "Cell Phone Use Linked"). Meaning, children can
develop behavioral problems from cell phones simply because their mother used one while pregnant
with them. Many people argue that

harm can come from it? That is a question us cell phone users may ask ourselves, yet never really

You may have your eyes on the road but your brain and focus are directed more towards the
conversation you're having. Thus, if something were to happen the reaction time would be a lot
slower than it would have been if you would have had your full attention on the road. In addition,
reaction times are also slower in face to face conversations if one or both persons are simultaneously
using their cell phones. It's not easy to multitask between the two. Cellular devices do cause a
change in sleep patterns if you think about it. Many younger people stay up all night using social

The Effects Of Technology On Human Health
Le Tran Professor: M. Scott Carter English1213 MC03F 9 December, 2015 Negative Effects of
Technology on Human Health In recent years, technology has been on a continuous rise. It has
become an integral part of the lives of countless individuals. From laptops to mobile phones, various
devices have their daily use in the daily affairs of people, whether the average citizen or famous
personalities. For the most part, technology has its benefits. Students now have easy and quick
access to multiple sources of information within the click of a button or the touch of a screen
regardless of location. Friends and family may now communicate across vast distances in real time.
Also, people may use their mobile devices to entertain themselves, especially in terms of watching
videos on demand and playing virtual games. There are many other examples. However, technology
also has its disadvantages. In sum, technology has the potential to cause negative effects on human
health. Unless properly addressed, many people are at risk of experiencing negative health
consequences due to the constant use of many technological devices today. For example, they can
cause sleep deprivation or people spent too much time for mobile instead of taking a rest. They can
make limit posture while using them. In addition, people can make nearly–sight eyes, hurt in neck or
back. The most important thing is the radiation from the modern technology devices that we do not

Advantages And Disadvantages Of Magnetic Field
Magnetic field is the spaces in which kinetic and electrically charged particles are under influence of
power and is formed following that electrons revolve around the nucleus and themselves. Magnetic
field is a phenomenon which cannot be directly seen or easily felt, however its results can be seen
and felt. Today, with the development of technology its measurement via devices has become
possible. All substances are of magnetic fields, either living or non–living, weak or strong. Like

They occur in connection with use of electric power, electronic surveillance systems and various
types of wireless communications. While these fields differ with respect to strengths and physical
characteristics, they all give rise to concern among those exposed about the possibility of health
risks. It is well established that strong fields can give rise to acute health effects, such as burns, but
exposure guidelines and regulations protect effectively against such effects. Current concerns are
instead directed towards the possibility that long–term exposure to weak fields might have
detrimental health effects due to some, to date unknown, biological mechanism. Due to the
widespread use of these techniques and the very prevalent exposure to some of the types of field
involved, even a weak association with disease risk could have strong impacts on public health.
Although the likelihood of such a scenario is debatable, it is the opinion of many that close
monitoring of health risks among exposed subjects is a high priority. Indeed, extensive research is
ongoing and has been so for several years. A report linking childhood cancer mortality to the
presence of power lines in the near proximity to the children's homes about 25 years ago spurred the
interest in power frequency fields1 . This interest has remained high ever since, although it has
gradually shifted towards other types of field, and in particular towards those used in connection
with telecommunications. The objective of this paper is to discuss the evidence pertaining to the
possibility that long–term exposure to weak fields of the types discussed above may be associated

Mobile Phone Exposure And Carcinogenesis Essay
Mobile phone exposure and carcinogenesis
Brain cancer is the most frightening hazard of mobile phone use. The International Agency for
Research on Cancer (IARC) classified RF fields as "possibly carcinogenic to humans," in 2002 in
spite of limited evidence from human and animal studies (IARC, 2002).
The relation between mobile phone radiation exposure and cancer are justified. Muscat et al. (2000)
showed that a relationship exists between mobile phone use and meningioma or glioma. A meta–
analysis conducted by Swedish researchers and published in the International Journal of Oncology,
pointed out to a significant correlation between long–term use of mobile phones and brain tumors
(Hardell et al. 2011). They found that both malignant and benign tumors were linked to the chronic
exposure to cell phone radiation and suggested that mobile phones were not safe for long–term use.
In 2011, after taking the opinions of 30 experts from 14 countries, the World Health Organization
(WHO) categorized mobile phone radiation as a potential Group 2B carcinogen and officially
advised consumers to limit their use (IARC, 2011; Baan et al., 2011). This suggests that mobile
phone radiation may have a carcinogenic effect. Recently, Howlader et al. (2013) reported that
mobile phone use raises the risk of brain cancer. Several possible pathways of carcinogenesis have
been suggested. As we have discussed, the plasma membrane may be a target of RF–EMW. RF–
EMW may act on various enzymes and

Cell Phone Radiation On Human Brain
The objective of this research is to study the effect of cell phone radiation on human brain. It is
known that the cell phone produces electromagnetic radiation which could be harmful to the human
brain. When the phone is placed 5 cm away from the head there is less brain activity compared to
when the cell phone is placed next to the ear or head on either side. Special attention is focused on
Temporal and Frontal lobes as these are very close to the ear, which is call the electromagnetic
radiation. The Electromagnetic radiation is measured in terms of specific absorption rate (SAR).
SAR is measured for two common holding positions of mobile phone: Cheek and Tilt. In tilt
position, the mobile phone tilted for 15° and 30° from a person's head. The SAR measured in the
Cheek position has much lower values than of tilt position.
The brain is one of the most important organs of the body that coordinates all the activities. It is
divided into three major parts namely: Cerebrum, Cerebellum, brain stem and diencephalon.
Cerebrum is the largest part of the brain. It covers the diencephalon and is divided into right and left
hemisphere longitudinally. Each hemisphere is subdivided into brain lobes, named as: Frontal lobe,
Parietal lobe, Temporal lobe and Occipital lobe.
The effect of SAR majority depends on the antenna position on the mobile phone. A mobile phone
with mounted antenna on top and hold in tilt position results in more absorption of EM radiation by
the head. This happens as the antenna is closer proximity to the head. Moreover, SAR values change
with variation of holding position of mobile phone. Cheek and tilt are two prevalent ways of holding
a mobile phone. "The electromagnetic fields produced by mobile phones are classified by the
International Agency for Research on Cancer as possibly hazardous to humans"[1]. The radio
frequency used for communication can penetrate through semi–solid substances, such as living
tissue with a distance proportional to its power density. "Research has demonstrated that the short–
term effect of EM waves on the human brain" [2]. However, the evidence supporting the research is
very little for any kind of short or long–term effect.

Meanwhile, several countries are implementing or considering a total ban of Wi–Fi in schools. So
what is the truth of the matter? Are mobiles really dangerous? There is no question that some of
those sounding the alarm belong to that subset of humanity who see conspiracies everywhere they
look. But, investigating the subject, it became clear to me that the arguments against phones are not
all the products of paranoid minds. Far from it. The fact is, considering how widespread phones are
(more than 5.3 billion mobiles are in use out of a global population of 7 billion) anything that
proved they were dangerous would be a highly inconvenient truth. "Mobile phones is an issue we all
bury our heads in the sand about," confirms Denis Henshaw, professor of physics and head of the
Human Radiation Effects group at Bristol University. "The first mobile phone technology was rolled

licensing of the networks. The new generation really doesn't want to know about any potential ill

most popular crowd with technology use today is the teenage group. The mobile phone now can do

Radiofrequency Exposure
Exposure of the human to radiofrequency( RF) radiation can occur from several sources, including
the use of personal devices (mobile phones, cordless phones, Wi–Fi, Bluetooth, amateur radios,
etc.), occupational sources (high–frequency dielectric and induction heaters, broadcast antennas,
high–power pulsed radars, and medical appliances), and environmental sources (mobile phone base
stations, broadcast antennae). [1] One of the most common tools we see these days is that of people
with their mobile phones next to their ears. Mobile phones are low–powered RF transmitters, with
frequencies between 450–2700 MHz, operating through a network of base stations, with power in

[3] The FCC's exposure guidelines delineate an SAR of 1.6 W/kg, averaged over 1 g of tissue, as the
safe limit for a mobile phone user and every handset should comply with this limit before FCC
approval is granted for marketing of a phone in the United States. However, less restrictive limits,
e.g., 2 W/kg averaged over 10 g of tissue, are specified by the International Commission on Non–
Ionising Radiation Protection (ICNIRP) guidelines, endorsed by WHO, and used in Europe and
most other countries. [7] Exposure of a user to RF declines rapidly with increasing distance from the
handset. A person using a mobile phone 30–40 cm away from the body, i.e., using speaker mode
while talking or using a "hands free" device, e.g., bluetooth headsets, will have a much lower
exposure than someone holding the handset against the head. [2] Several devices which claim to
increase the safety of mobile phone use such as., shielded cases, earpiece pads/shields, antenna
clips/caps, special batteries, and absorbing buttons, decrease exposures by a factor of 10, they have
the danger of adversely affecting the phone's antenna, due to which the phone will attempt to

Essay about Cell Phone Radiation
In today's society there have been numerous advancements to help us in our everyday lives. One of
this advancement is cell–phones, which is one of the greatest development in technology. We have
become dependent on mobiles phones and it seem like a high percentage of the population including
elderly people, young adult and even kids under 18 have one of this devices. There are numerous
advantages and disadvantages related to cell phones. In one hand there is the importance of being
communicated for emergencies, business, social and personal purposes. On the other hand, the usage
of cell phone had become addictive to people of all around the world and the abuse of prolongated
hours on the cell phones can cause health hazard. Cell phones ... Show more content on

Cell phone exposure to kids can lead to a significant relationship to childhood emotional problems
and hyperactivity. However there had done others study that express the connection between cell
phones and different types of biological damage to human body. For example The European Journal
of Scientific Research conducted a lab experiment with normal human astrocytes, an LG Verizon
cell phone and MRET–Nylon chip. The experiment revealed that normal human astrocytes cell that
were exposed to cell phone radiation at a room temperature without the MRET–Nylon chip
decreased by 20% less . Igor Smirnov is one of the author of this experiment and he stated on his
article that "It is well documented that cell phones, which emit electromagnetic fields in the radio
frequency range, can cause DNA damage, headaches, blurred vision, dizziness, fatigue, short term
memory loss, neuralgias, tumors, sleep disturbances, aberrant brain wave activity and changes to
cerebral blood flow, including altering the permeability of the blood brain barrier" (Smirnov, 2009).
Smirnov statement and finding about the emission of electromagnetic wave from cell phones gives a
lot to think. Even–tough it's a small amount of radiation that is being emitted from cell–phones,
because they are held very close to the head at the end of a long term usage the risk of brain cancer
and others health problems will

The Effects Of Radio Frequency Waves On Health
Introduction
With cell phone usage increasing, many individuals have become concerned about the health effects
of radiation from cell phones and cell phone towers. In recent years, various studies have been
conducted to determine whether the radio frequency waves from cell phone towers have a
detrimental effect on health. Current research has yielded inconsistent results regarding the effects
of radio frequency waves, and while the World Health Organization does not view radio frequency
waves as serious risk, more research needs to be done in order to be certain (USDA, 2009). In this
paper I will be addressing the following scenario (Case 4):
A mobile phone base station was installed near a neighborhood in order to provide a better service
coverage in 2008. Over the past 5 years, the local residents complained of headache, memory loss,
dizziness, tremors, depressive symptoms, and sleep disturbance. They are concerned that the station
has caused neuropsychiatric problems and some changes in the performance of neurobehavioral
functions. They are more worried about their children, as a few cases of leukemia and brain tumor
have been found in young children (aged 1–3) since then.
In an effort to address the issue of radio frequency radiation exposure in this community, we will
provide a background on the sources of radio frequency radiation as well as the known and
suspected health effects. We will also proposed two epidemiological studies and discuss risk
management and

The Negative Effects Of Cellphone Addiction

  • 1. The Negative Effects Of Cellphone Addiction Technology has made many advancements through the past few years. Cellphones particularly have become more advanced and popular. These electronic devices have granted access to an endless amount of resources you can use to simplify your everyday life. However, the technological upgrades in cellphones have also provoked an addiction to the excessive use of this electronic. The cellphone addiction has become very common among many people especially the younger generations. This addiction compared to other addictions might seem harmless however, its side affects can be very serious and shouldn't be overlooked. Throughout, my research I have discovered how a cellphone addiction negatively effects your physical, social, and mental health. Effectively demonstrating how dangerous a cellphone addiction can be to the individuals who suffer it. Consequently, one of the things cellphone addiction negatively impacts is physical health. For example, from my own experience cellphone addiction can lead to hand cramping, eye strain and, neck pain. However, throughout my researched I found more physical side effects to addictive cellphone behavior which are more serious. The National Center for Health Research website has an article titled "Can Cellphones Harm Our Health?" which informs about the toll cellphone addiction takes on your bodies health. In summary, this article states the findings of studies scientists have done. The studies investigate how cellphone radiation affects people who ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 2. Are Cell Phones Dangerous? Introduction In this project, I am going to investigate the question 'are cell phones dangerous'. I will show how a cell–phone works and how radiation caused by cell–phones may affect you, I will show you different viewpoints from different sources and go through identifying key points and evaluate their arguments I will then give you my own opinion based on the facts and research I have conducted. What is the electromagnetic spectrum? The electromagnetic spectrum is a range of different Electromagnetic radiation. The radiation is energy that travels in waves, the electromagnetic spectrum is what is used to describe those waves. Electromagnetic waves are formed by vibrations electric and magnetic fields. the distance from one point on one wave to the same exact point on the next wave is known as the wave length. Some wave lengths can reach the length of 1000 meters to as small as 0.000000000001 meters. Frequency is another term for describing waves, frequency is how many times a wave is repeated over one second. Frequency is measured in Hertz; 1 hertz is the same as 1 wave a second, 1 KHz is the same as 1000 waves a second. 1 MHz is 1 million waves a second and 1 Ghz is 1 billion waves a second. The electromagnetic spectrum is so vast and us humans can only see a very small fraction of that, we can only see the visible light, although we use all types of waves in our daily lives, whether it be using the remote to change the channel or to cook our food The electromagnetic ... • 3. Mobile Phone Radiation Affects Our Health Essay Introduction In the year 1966, less than 100 million adults across the globe had cell phones. However, as of 2016, there were 4.23 billion mobile phone users across the globe. The exponential increase in mobile phone use has made it urgent to determine whether or not mobile phone radiation poses a health hazard. The question of whether mobile phone radiation affects our health has been surrounded by controversy since the introduction of mobile phones. For several years, the World Health Organization (WHO) has assured people that there are no significant risks stemming from repeated use of mobile phones. However, it included mobile phone radiation to the list of carcinogenic substances in the year 2011. A carcinogenic substance is a substance that is directly involved in causing cancer. What exactly is Mobile Phone Radiation? Mobile phone radiation can be defined as energy travelling through space in form of waves. Since mobile phones use radio frequency (RF) to make or receive calls, it emits electromagnetic radiation. The radiation emitted by the mobile phones is classified as non–ionizing. In simpler terms, it does not ionize other molecules; instead it excites materials into another form of energy. If mobile phone radiation was ionizing, it would be very harmful as it would ionize molecules causing more radiation effects. Other gadgets that produce non–ionizing radiation include visible light, microwave and radio waves. It is therefore true to say that we are in ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. The Possible Links Between Cellphone Uses and Tumors 1. How do cellphones work? These work by the signals which are transmitted to and can be received from the base station (usually located close by) through RF wave. RF wave is a type of electromagnetic wave with a frequency range of 300GHZ widely used in radio communication and in applications such as heating. RF waves along with FM waves, microwaves, visible light and heat come under non–ionizing radiation. RF does not cause cancer. These waves are different from radiations i.e. x–rays, gamma rays and UV rays. These radiations can destroy the chemical bonds that make up DNA (Deoxyribonucleic acid). At higher levels the RF waves can raise the temperature of the body. But the RF waves emitted by the cell phones are generally of lower energy level and hence it does not affect body temperature. 2. How are people exposed to RF waves? RF waves require more energy for long distance transmission. The energy at the transmitting antenna in cellphone will greater than the energy received by the receiving antenna of the cellphone (loss of energy during long distance transmission). When a customer communicates using cellphone which is in contact with their ear (either left or right) the maximum energy at the transmitting antenna of the cellphone during communication will be directly absorbed by that ear. The ear that is closest to the phone will absorb more energy that the ear that farther away. It also depends on factors such as: 1. Amount of time the cellphone is being used ... • 5. Mobile Phone Radiation and Their Effects on Human Health The effect of mobile phone radiation on human health is the subject of recent interest and study, as a result of the enormous increase in mobile phone usage throughout the world (as of June 2009, there were more than 4.3 billion users worldwide). Mobile phones use electromagnetic in the microwave range. Other digital wireless systems, such as data communication networks, produce similar radiation. The WHO has classified mobile phone radiation on the IARC scale into Group 2B – possibly carcinogenic. That means that there "could be some risk" of carcinogenicity, so additional research into the long–term, heavy use of mobile phones needs to be conducted. Some national radiation advisory authorities have recommended measures to minimize ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... They found a leakage of albumin into the brain via a permeated blood–brain barrier. This confirms earlier work on the blood–brain barrier by Allan Frey, Oscar and Hawkins, and Albert and Kerns. Other groups have not confirmed these findings in vitro cell studies or whole animal studies. Cancer In 2006 a large Danish study about the connection between mobile phone use and cancer incidence was published. It followed over 420,000 Danish citizens for 20 years and showed no increased risk of cancer. The German Federal Office for Radiation Protection (Bundesamt für Strahlenschutz) considers this report inconclusive. • 7. Social Media And Its Effect On Children Sustained attention was defined by one's ability to maintain prolonged focus during repetitive activities. Researchers found that the ability to remain focused on a single task was most correlated with the volume of media consumption, social media usage, multi–screening behaviour, and when the individual adopted a technological lifestyle. As the use and consumption of technology increased, the ability to focus for a longer term decreased. Age was a variable heavily correlated with these metrics, however age alone cannot be tied to sustained attention. However, not all of the results were against using technology. Remarkably, early tech adopters and heavy users of social media showed an increase in the number of high attention bursts. Selective attention was defined by one's ability to maintaining response in the face of distracting or competing stimuli. It was found that those that spend more time multi–screening have significantly lower selective attentional scores, and those with higher scores actively chose fewer distractions. However, a participant 's ability to filter out distractions is a result of their current surroundings, and not their use of media, or device use. If consumers were over or under stimulated by an information source, multi–screeners would switch their attention to something else. Alternating attention was defined by one's ability to shift attention between tasks demanding different cognitive skills. From data collected, it appears that digital ... The better we improve our communications, the faster we as a human race develop and continue to innovate on the technology of today's time. Since the late 1800s, there have been various devices created to make long distance communications easier and more efficient. From the telegraph to the telephone to the technology we have today, we have succeeded in bringing everyone in the world a little closer. But in the past ten years, the examples of ease in communications has never been more prevalent. In fact, a survey conducted by the Pew Research Center discovered that over ninety one percent of adult Americans owned a cellular device and those results also apply to other european countries as well. The cell phone industry has grown to become some of the biggest companies in the world and make a product that is always on us. Which is why many worry when they hear that mobile phones emit a certain radiation called radio frequency (RF) radiation. This radiation is regulated by the Federal Communications Commision and has been extensively researched, but many people still wonder if this cell phone radiation is safe. Some people say that this radiation is completely free from harm and has zero to a few minor health defects on its consumers, while others believe that the radiation is poisonous and has many negative effects on users. The correct side is the latter and people should know the impact that these devices have on their well being and whether they are truly safe from the technology they own. To start off, a major concern in the community of researchers who study radio frequency radiation is the correlation between it and the increased risk of health defects. A common theme brought up while discussing the effects on consumers from cellular phone radiation is the consistent patterns shown the in development of brain tumors. While many may argue that the radiation that emits from cellular devices is not powerful enough to cause any real damage and is also deemed safe by the Federal Communications Commision, they do not take into consideration the lengthy exposure that may be brought from an extended period of time such as ten to twenty years. ... Mobile Phones : The Negative Effects Of Cell Phone In 2011, the IARC, International Agency for Research on Cancer, said that the radiation of the cell phone you use every day could be cancerous and have long–term effects. Although, the negative effects of cell phones are dangerous and possibly deadly they are also not actually scientifically proven. The negative effects aren't proven because there isn't any actual evidence to support them. Negative effects aside, there are still many advantages to cell phones. Nowadays, cell phones carry music, games, social media apps and communication resources that make life entertaining and easy. Cellular phones have grown into society as a way for us to stay connected with loved ones, friends and even strangers, but cell phones can be very addictive in ways which can affect your brain and cause cancer. The cellular phone was first invented in the 19th century and is still used to this day. The purpose of the phone is to be able to communicate with people in different areas, regions and countries. This is shown when the author says, "The telephone first appeared in the late 19th century as a largely mechanical device and continued to develop throughout the 20th century based primarily on analog electronics." This means that, the cell phone has developed during time, going from a small pocket device with an antenna and a beeper to a touchscreen mp3 player, videogame console, web searcher, camera, calculator and communication device. In the modern age a cell phone is almost a "requirement" since everyone from ages 10+ have one sticking out of their pockets. Even though cell phones and their benefits are easy to recognize, the safety of cell phone use has been debated because of the safety of the cell phone radiation. The safety of cell phone radiation that is emitted from cell phones is a controversial topics, debating claims such as whether it has a correlation with cancer or tumors, if children are affected by it more than adults are, and by whether or not it is safe cannot be decided because of how recent the adoption of cell phones are (procon.org). One large debate in the topic of cell phone safety, and the safety of the radiation that is emitted from cell phones, is whether or not it can cause cancer. The radiation emitted from cell phones is a radiofrequency electromagnetic field, and is the controversial topic at hand. Some believe that cell phone radiation cannot cause cancer of any kind. The argument here is that the cell phone radiation that is emitted from cell phones in not powerful enough to cause cancer, while others believe that it still could. The radiation emitted from cell phones is argued to be non–ionizing, which means that it "produces molecules called ions that have either too many or too few electrons." The imbalance in ions is what is blamed for the development of cancer. Even though the argument could be true, there is no credit or no support for how the conclusion of this argument, that cell phone radiation is non–ionizing, has been found (qtd. in procon.org pro 2). On the contrary, a study was conducted by the IARC, or the International Agency for Research on Cancer, that labeled cell phone radiation as a possible carcinogen. The study was conducted by 31 scientists, and concluded that the radiofrequency electromagnetic field that cell phones, radios, and televisions emit are group 2B carcinogens, which are "possibly carcinogenic to humans." This study provides more sound evidence than the other side of the argument because it gives credibility to the argument by citing research that was completed by an institution (qtd. in procon.org con 6). It might be a misconception that the radio waves would only be absorbed around the ear; however, the radiation from the mobile phone can easily penetrate deeply into the brain. Since the nervous system for youth is still in development, youth tends to have a higher risk of developing brain tumors which then leads to cancer compared to adults. The increasing dependence upon mobile phones as the primary source of communication can cause high level of anxiety and stress in children. The constant ringing sounds of notifications of messages during the night can cause poor sleeping quality and increases the sense of anxiety. Moreover, the instant reply can bring elation but in the case of delayed response, the elation feeling turns into disappointment. Also, it has been proven that car accidents are the leading causes of death of youth because of the distraction of cell phone use during driving. According to the University of Alabama at Birmingham (2008), children were fourty three percent more likely to be struck by an oncoming vehicle while crossing the road with their phones. The constant peer pressure and need to fit in can cause tremendous stress on children where they feel the need to have the newest Iphone as well when many of their classmates have it too. But, the increase in cell phone usage has brought up many concerns relating to our health. When I think about these health concerns, I think about my mother lecturing me, "Katheryn Paige Leyde, take your phone out of your front pockets right now!" I would role my eyes, and pull my phone out of my pocket. I never really thought of technology as a health hazard, but my mother had read an article; stating that trends in research show, technology can cause infertility, hearing loss or even cancer from the electromagnetic field that cell phones give off. Hopefully with the research I present to you, you too will think twice about the next time you put your phone in your pocket. How Cell Phones Can Harm Children How Cell Phones Can Harm Children As of 2013, cell phones rank number one for causes of car accidents, yet it seems almost impossible to go anywhere without seeing a cell phone in a person's hand or attached to their ear ("Two–thirds of Adults Use a Cell Phone"). In the past thirty years, cell phones have started to pop up everywhere and have increased tremendously in popularity since. Worldwide, almost five million cell phones are in use today ("Cell Phone Use Linked"). Many parents understand the convenience and helpfulness of cell phones, but many more parents do not realize the dangers that cell phone usage can bring to children. Cell phones put children at risk for behavioral problems, cancer, and even death. First, cell phones can have an effect on the way children communicate and interact with others, which affects their behavior, causing challenges such as hyperactivity, as well as obedience and emotional issues. Cell phones do not only affect children that use them, they can also affect children in the womb. Dr. Leeka Kheifets, an epidemiologist at the University of California Los Angeles, led a study that found that, "children whose mothers who used cell phones while pregnant and who also use the cell phones themselves were 50 percent more likely to have behavioral problems" (qtd. in "Cell Phone Use Linked"). • 31. The Effects Of Technology On Human Health Le Tran Professor: M. Scott Carter English1213 MC03F 9 December, 2015 Negative Effects of Technology on Human Health In recent years, technology has been on a continuous rise. It has become an integral part of the lives of countless individuals. From laptops to mobile phones, various devices have their daily use in the daily affairs of people, whether the average citizen or famous personalities. For the most part, technology has its benefits. Students now have easy and quick access to multiple sources of information within the click of a button or the touch of a screen regardless of location. Friends and family may now communicate across vast distances in real time. Also, people may use their mobile devices to entertain themselves, especially in terms of watching videos on demand and playing virtual games. There are many other examples. However, technology also has its disadvantages. In sum, technology has the potential to cause negative effects on human health. Unless properly addressed, many people are at risk of experiencing negative health consequences due to the constant use of many technological devices today. For example, they can cause sleep deprivation or people spent too much time for mobile instead of taking a rest. They can make limit posture while using them. In addition, people can make nearly–sight eyes, hurt in neck or back. While these fields differ with respect to strengths and physical characteristics, they all give rise to concern among those exposed about the possibility of health risks. It is well established that strong fields can give rise to acute health effects, such as burns, but exposure guidelines and regulations protect effectively against such effects. Current concerns are instead directed towards the possibility that long–term exposure to weak fields might have detrimental health effects due to some, to date unknown, biological mechanism. Due to the widespread use of these techniques and the very prevalent exposure to some of the types of field involved, even a weak association with disease risk could have strong impacts on public health. Although the likelihood of such a scenario is debatable, it is the opinion of many that close monitoring of health risks among exposed subjects is a high priority. Indeed, extensive research is ongoing and has been so for several years. A report linking childhood cancer mortality to the presence of power lines in the near proximity to the children's homes about 25 years ago spurred the interest in power frequency fields1 . This interest has remained high ever since, although it has gradually shifted towards other types of field, and in particular towards those used in connection with telecommunications. The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) classified RF fields as "possibly carcinogenic to humans," in 2002 in spite of limited evidence from human and animal studies (IARC, 2002). The relation between mobile phone radiation exposure and cancer are justified. Muscat et al. (2000) showed that a relationship exists between mobile phone use and meningioma or glioma. A meta– analysis conducted by Swedish researchers and published in the International Journal of Oncology, pointed out to a significant correlation between long–term use of mobile phones and brain tumors (Hardell et al. 2011). They found that both malignant and benign tumors were linked to the chronic exposure to cell phone radiation and suggested that mobile phones were not safe for long–term use. In 2011, after taking the opinions of 30 experts from 14 countries, the World Health Organization (WHO) categorized mobile phone radiation as a potential Group 2B carcinogen and officially advised consumers to limit their use (IARC, 2011; Baan et al., 2011). This suggests that mobile phone radiation may have a carcinogenic effect. Recently, Howlader et al. (2013) reported that mobile phone use raises the risk of brain cancer. Several possible pathways of carcinogenesis have been suggested. As we have discussed, the plasma membrane may be a target of RF–EMW. RF– EMW may act on various enzymes and ... • 35. Cell Phone Radiation On Human Brain The objective of this research is to study the effect of cell phone radiation on human brain. It is known that the cell phone produces electromagnetic radiation which could be harmful to the human brain. When the phone is placed 5 cm away from the head there is less brain activity compared to when the cell phone is placed next to the ear or head on either side. Special attention is focused on Temporal and Frontal lobes as these are very close to the ear, which is call the electromagnetic radiation. The Electromagnetic radiation is measured in terms of specific absorption rate (SAR). SAR is measured for two common holding positions of mobile phone: Cheek and Tilt. In tilt position, the mobile phone tilted for 15° and 30° from a person's head. The SAR measured in the Cheek position has much lower values than of tilt position. The brain is one of the most important organs of the body that coordinates all the activities. It is divided into three major parts namely: Cerebrum, Cerebellum, brain stem and diencephalon. Cerebrum is the largest part of the brain. It covers the diencephalon and is divided into right and left hemisphere longitudinally. Each hemisphere is subdivided into brain lobes, named as: Frontal lobe, Parietal lobe, Temporal lobe and Occipital lobe. The effect of SAR majority depends on the antenna position on the mobile phone. A mobile phone with mounted antenna on top and hold in tilt position results in more absorption of EM radiation by the head. This happens as the antenna is closer proximity to the head. Moreover, SAR values change with variation of holding position of mobile phone. Cheek and tilt are two prevalent ways of holding a mobile phone. "The electromagnetic fields produced by mobile phones are classified by the International Agency for Research on Cancer as possibly hazardous to humans"[1]. The radio frequency used for communication can penetrate through semi–solid substances, such as living tissue with a distance proportional to its power density. "Research has demonstrated that the short– term effect of EM waves on the human brain" [2]. However, the evidence supporting the research is very little for any kind of short or long–term effect. The fact is, considering how widespread phones are (more than 5.3 billion mobiles are in use out of a global population of 7 billion) anything that proved they were dangerous would be a highly inconvenient truth. The Effects Of Radio Frequency Waves On Health Introduction With cell phone usage increasing, many individuals have become concerned about the health effects of radiation from cell phones and cell phone towers. In recent years, various studies have been conducted to determine whether the radio frequency waves from cell phone towers have a detrimental effect on health. Current research has yielded inconsistent results regarding the effects of radio frequency waves, and while the World Health Organization does not view radio frequency waves as serious risk, more research needs to be done in order to be certain (USDA, 2009). In this paper I will be addressing the following scenario (Case 4): A mobile phone base station was installed near a neighborhood in order to provide a better service coverage in 2008. Over the past 5 years, the local residents complained of headache, memory loss, dizziness, tremors, depressive symptoms, and sleep disturbance. They are concerned that the station has caused neuropsychiatric problems and some changes in the performance of neurobehavioral functions. They are more worried about their children, as a few cases of leukemia and brain tumor have been found in young children (aged 1–3) since then.
