19th Century Swimming
Swimming became a true sport in the 19th century when Great Britain began to start holding competitions to see who could get from one side of
the pool to the other the fastest. The first type of stroke that they used was breaststroke because that was the easiest way to swim at the time while
still being able to breathe. As time progressed the British started using a stroke called the forward crawl with a scissor kick, however a man named
Frederick Cavill in 1887 traveled to the South Seas and saw people using the forward crawl but with a flutter kick which is now our modern day
freestyle. Swimming first became featured in the Olympics in 1896 and the only strokes that were raced were Freestyle and Breaststroke. Backstroke
was added in 1904

Swimming Is Not A Natural Act
Most people believe that the most efficient and effective way to lose weight is either by jogging or running. They think this because running is done
on land, involves very hard movements of the arms and legs, and their heartrates are going at 5 beats per second. People always seem to forget that a
better, easier and less vigorous way to get fit is through swimming. Swimming is moving your body through a body of water, either a pool or ocean,
using your arms and legs, while running is moving quickly on land with your feet. Swimming is not a natural act but a learned talent. According to Dr.
Howard Wainer, a swimmer and statistician at the Educational Testing Service in Princeton, N.J., thehuman body was not meant to move quickly
through water.
Most people believe that its harder to run than to swim but the fact is that it's harder to swim. In swimming water acts as the resistance while in
running, air is the resistance. Water is a lot thicker than air which makes it harder to move through. When running, performance peters out as the
distances get longer but in swimming the pace is consistent regardless of the distance.
Swimming has a lot of benefits which most people don't know about. Swimming keeps your heartrate up without overstressing the body. It builds
endurance, muscle strength and cardiovascular fitness. Swimming also keeps the heart and the lungs healthy. All the muscles are used while
swimming so it's a good all–over body workout. Also, according to research done

Swimming Monologue
I wake up barely dawn, when the early morning is still unpleasantly chilly and most of my peers are comfortably cuddled in their blankets. I, on the
other hand, will dive into the pool. My weary limbs urging me to go back to bed, but my ambitious heart encouraging me to move forward. I keep
going, training, and racing for the next two and a half hour; everyday, until my arms are too tired to lift my aching body out of the pool. Some days
were easy. I had motivation and full of energy. Others, were much more difficult and I had to improvise, adapt, and overcome.
Swimming is an integral part of my life–between training at swim practice, lifeguarding and teaching swimming lessons, I rarely spend any time on

It has taught me the value of sportsmanship and teamwork. My teammates and I have become confidants to each other, as we challenge and
encourage each other to become better in everything that we do even at 6:00 a. m. in the morning. Swimming not only helped me see that there will
always be room for improvement, but I am also motivated to push myself to the limits in the friendly competitive setting. Getting to see and observe
the competition allows me to see where I want to set my next goal and where I could improve wherever it be technique or time. Walking up at 5:30
a.m. for six days a week for the grueling two and a half hour practice has developed my self–discipline, as well as taught me how to manage my time

Swimming To Antarctica Summary
Swimming to Antarctica is a story about how Lynne Cox attempt to complete the grueling swim. Lynne's goal to finish the swim is motivated by her
effort, determination and bravery. Can Lynne overcome her difficulties and finish the swim, or will she let it all slip away?
Lynne will be doing a mile long swim in the freezing, thirty–two degree water. That is the temperature when fresh water freezes. If Lynne's cells froze,
then the body tissue could result in a permanent life threatening situation. In Lynne's cabin she questioned herself, "Would my core temperature drop
faster?", "Would i be able to tell if I was in immediate danger?". Did she reallywant to take such a risk, one part of her wanted it and another did not.
The next morning Lynne walked down to the ship's library and drank four eight–ounce cups of hot water, and ate two small croissants for breakfast.
The reason she ate and drank these is because they are high in fat and carbohydrates. Swimmers need these because the water is so cold the layer
of fat would help keep her warm. Gabriella came in to take a core temperature, it was about 100.4 degrees. This was higher than usual, because she
was so psyched. She rubbed sunscreen on her face, but none on her arms and legs because she would be slippery if the crew needed to pull her out
of the water in an emergency. Before Lynne stepped out onto the ramp Dr. Block traced two veins in her arm with a blue marker, it was just a
precaution in case of an emergency. Though

Exposing the Common Myths about Swimming
Swimming involves numerous techniques, strategies and practices. Different individuals think and feel differently about swimming. Consequently, the
concepts, notions and ideas regarding swimming vary greatly. If you have been learning and practicing swimming for quite some time now, you must
have come across contradictory opinions and judgments about both swimming and swimmers. Now, while it is perfectly OK to hold opinions, it is in
no way, desirable for a swimmer to believe in any of the myths surrounding swimming. Since most people commit the mistake of drawing conclusions
depending on their personal experiences, the myths that make their rounds are in plenty. As a swimmer, you should know only what is right and then
decide, depending on suitability. So, here's busting some of the common myths about swimming for you to have clear knowledge ... Show more content

Swimmers using paddles end up exerting too much pressure on their rotator cuff muscles as well as the triceps. Another disadvantage of practicing
with the paddles is that when you stop using them, you are most likely to swing off right at the back of the set. So, the lesser you use paddles, the
better you are as a swimmer. Consult your expert and learn about alternative stroke styles and techniques in order to improve your ability of pulling in
the waters.
Kicking Does Not Help in Forward Propulsion
This is perhaps the greatest misconception about swimming techniques that have become popular. The importance of kicks often remains unrecognized
by the swimmers. The reality is just the opposite. Legs help in propelling ahead just as much as the arms do. In fact, swimming experts with years of
coaching are of the opinion that the faster you kick, the faster you are in the waters.

History of Swimming
Swimming was invented
before recorded history. Humans discovered how to swim
by accident. A person probably fell into the water and
struggled to shore using a dog–paddle stroke. There was an
Egyptian hieroglyph for swimming dating from 2500 BC.
The ancient Greeks and Romans made swimming an
important part of their military training programs. There
have been known swimming contests that were organized
in Japan as early as the 1st century BC. During the Middle
Ages in Europe, swimming declined in popularity. People
felt that the water was contaminated and a source of
disease. Not everyone feared the water, however, Louis
XI reportedly swam daily in the Seine. During the early

only 5% of those who swim do so at an aerobic pace.
Although few doubt the aerobic benefits of swimming,
studies comparing swimming with jogging, results found that
swimmers lost less body fat than joggers. Apparently
swimming causes an adjustment in how energy is burned,
resulting in the burning of more carbohydrates than body
fat. One reason might be that swimmers retain more body
fat to insulate and maintain body heat.

Swimming Moment Analysis
This moment was what we had worked for our entire swimming careers. It was exhilarating. It felt like we were on top of the world. I felt as though
everything below me was moving in slow motion but, I didn't mind because I wanted this feeling to last forever. I had the medal around my neck and
I was smiling with pure joy. I have been swimming since I was six years old. I have gone to practice after practice after practice for the past eleven
years. At first, I was on the club team. Then, in 7th grade I could try out for the Oxford High School team and I made it. I loved high school season
the most. I loved swimming with the older kids and I loved the feeling of being on a team. Then, with what seemed like a blink of the eye, I was the

So, that is exactly what I did. I worked harder than I ever had in swim for those two months. I would come to practice and focus everyday even

In 1873, this hybrid stroke became known as the Trudgen stroke.
4.Trudgen effectively changed England's swimming styles from endurance based to more speed based. iv. Another swimming pioneer, Fredrick Cavill ,
helped further develop Trudgen's stroke into an even faster stroke known as the front crawl (livestrong.com).
1.He was an Englishman and a notable swimmer who emigrated to Australia.
2.Like Arthur Trudgen, Cavill observed the natives of the Solomon Islands and found that Trudgen's stroke would have been significantly faster if he
would have incorporated the native's kicking action.
3.Cavill refined the native's stroke and taught it to his sons, one of which would later use the stroke in a competition in England.
4.Since England was still using the Trudgen stoke, Cavill's son Richard, destroyed his competition with the more efficient stroke, which he described
as, "crawling through the water" (usaswimming.org). Hence, the name front crawl.
2.As I previously mentioned, I will describe the four basic strokes that swimming consists of, such as the freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke, and
butterfly
A.The Federation Internationale de Natation (FINA), the governing body for international competitive swimming, regulates everything swim related.
i.FINA, states that, "the four official strokes, breast, back, free and fly, comprise all the events in national and international competition" (FINA.org) ii.

Goals For Swimming Research Paper
If you could chose between swimming and running, what would you chose? The key is that swimming encompasses much more that just doing laps
in a pool. It is going out in the ocean and exploring shipwrecks and coral reefs. It is playing water polo with a group of friends on holiday or just
having fun messing around in the water. Swimming is important because it allows me to actively participate in physical activities by being enjoyable,
makes me want to continue physical activity so I can maintain a healthy body, and allows me to establish goals for my future by challenging me. First,

I like to swim because I ignore what everyone else is doing and focus on myself. The times of other swimmers and their form compared to mine is
not important because what matters to me is that I challenge myself and improve. Because of this, I set a goal for myself, and then take baby
steps to reach that goal. An example of this is when I was training to become a certified scuba diver. At first, I was not the best at swimming
because I never really learned how to do it properly. I took baby steps to achieving my goal of certification, and it started with learning proper form
for the flutter kick. I worked with my instructor and had it done within a day. Then, I moved on to doing the flutter kick with flippers. I did that,
and then moved on to doing that with the scuba gear on. This took about two days to get down, but I was able to get certified after I had finished
that. This is just an example, and a goal that I am working towards right now in my life is improving the balance of strength in my muscles. The
right side of my body is stronger than my left side so I am going swimming at the local YMCA in order to help make my body more balanced. This
goal arose from me wanting to challenge myself because when I am swimming, it doesn't matter what kind of shape I am in, I can still improve upon
it. To summarize, swimming is important because it allows me to

Swimming To Antarctica Analysis
Did you know that swimming became an Olympic sport in 1908, but women were not allowed to participate until 1912? That same year, Australian
swimmer, Fanny Durack, became the first woman to win a gold medal in the 100–yard freestyle. Why do you think that woman weren't allowed the
first few years? Is it because some believed women were not tough enough to handle it? In Lynn Cox's memoir Swimming to Antarctica (Tales of a
Long Distance Swimmer), Cox not only expresses the dedication and determination it takes to be an Olympic long distance swimmer, but that
she also states that personal dreams are achievable if one is willing enough to work hard to achieve their goals. Cox found the water to be very
peaceful in her first distance race at a young age, ever since then, she felt as though she finally found what she was meant to do. If Cox needs any
gift at all, it would be a picture of her 2 years before she started long distance swimming. That picture would show her how much she improved
because when she was young she used be very concerned about how slow of a swimmer she was. Also she would be able to inspire not only herself but
other people who feel the same way. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

expert soon provided that you get efficient in crossing one more hurdle that is, open water swimming. Swimming in the open waters is scary at least
for the first time that you swim in an environment that is strikingly different from that of a swimming pool. When inside the waters, you will tend to
miss the black line, the walls and so many other things that will evoke a sense of fear and insecurity in you.
On the positive side, open water swimming practice will eventually take you not one but a lot of steps ahead towards your goal of becoming a
professional swimmer. You will enjoy the waters more, become familiar with the waters and more than anything else, feel an extreme sense of
satisfaction for sure. So, here is a list of tricks and strategies that are sure to help you as you begin venturing into the open waters for the first time in

Procedure: All 200m swims are conducted at an even pace (even 50m splits), on 6 minutes (starting every new set exactly six minutes after the
start of the previous one). The test is conducted using the swimmer's specialist stroke (ie freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke). The swimming target
time for each swimmer is based on age or intensity. For seniors, the last 200m is swum at maximum heart rate, and each 200m preceding this is at 10
bpm below the one before. For young age groupers, each swim is related to their personal best (PB), such that (for males): 1st 200m = PB +24 secs,
2nd 200m = PB +20 secs, 3rd 200m = PB +16 secs, 4th 200m = PB +12 secs, 5th 200m = PB + 8 secs, 6th 200m = PB pace, 7th 200m = Goal PB pace.

Health Benefits Of Swimming
Ancient drawings and paintings found in Egypt depicting people swimming date back to 2500 BCE. Little did the egyptians know how big the sport
of swimming would become. Benjamin Franklin invented swimming fins, the first diving board in England was at Highgate Ponds in 1893, swimming
became an olympic sport in 1896, swimming in the olympics began as a mens only competition and in 1912 women were allowed to participate. Not
only did swimming become a big deal, it became such an important sport. Swimming is the most beneficial sport because it meets the need of physical
and mental health, social encouragement, and personal preferences.
Primarily, swimming has excellent health benefits. Swimming is such an amazing sport to help manage weight. One can burn up to 367 calories after
just 30 minutes of relaxed breastroke. Believe it or not, that beats walking, cycling, and even running. Swimming is a full body workout. From the
moment you dive into the pool to begin swimming laps, every muscle in your bod is challenged. Butterfly, backstroke, breastroke, and freestyle are
using all the muscles from head to toe. The upper– body muscles that are used include the pectorals, deltoids, biceps, triceps, and wrist flexors. The
lower– body muscles include the calves, quads, hamstrings, and glutes. Having strong muscles doesn't just have cosmetic benefits. Having strong
muscles help control weight, avoid chronic health conditions, and build a strong heart. Swimming does not only affect

Dryland Training In Swimming
Dryland training in swimming dates back to early times. Running, push–ups, pull–ups, common military training techniques have been incorporated in
swimming training for years. This remained the staple for years. Resistance training began with medicine balls, progressing to dumbbells, barbells, and
many more items in the 80s as Arnold was beginning to make strength cool. Functional movements entered the sport in the 90s, as many doubted if
"adding muscle" benefited swimming and if the traditional big 3 lifts (bench press, deadlift, back squat) transferred to swimming. In the past decade,
strength training and full body resistance training has popped it's head back into swimming training. Like swimming, strength and conditioning training

level, elite swimmer, or simply want what is best, you need an in–person strength coach. This strength coach must understand swimming or at least
listen to the swim coach about training phases, tapers, etc. This person could also run a program written by a digital strength coach. Unfortunately, I
have not been able to get this to work properly, as it is hard to ensure what you suggest is being done miles away. Also, many coaches don't like to be
robots and dictate something they didn't write or worse what they don't believe in, this includes swimming and strength coaches. Now, many swim
coaches will read this and think they can be the in–person dryland coach, but this isn't the case. If you want to build the best swimmers, get a certified
professional. Certainly some coaches (to give you what I think, maybe 1%) can wear these hats, but having a swim coach lead dryland is like having a

Reflection Paper On Swimming
Attentiveness is a key value the team holds. Everyone needs to be there and ready to go by the start of practice. If someone is late they get talked
to by one of the coaches which is one of their sanctions they practice. Being attentive is a good lesson swimmers learn that gets them ready for
having a job after college. At morning practice, it is kind of astonishing to see the swimmers being unexpectedly energetic, especially at 5:40 AM.
Before jumping into the pool, I noticed a lot of the swimmers were doing some sort of dance. They were swinging their arms, jumping up and
down, stretching, etc. I think They are doing some dynamic warm ups they go through before entering into the pool. They do this to get them
loose and ready to swim. It almost as if it is a ritual they do before every practice or before every event at a meet. It like how Michael Phelps flops
his arms around behind the blocks before racing. Swimmers are a unique subculture as well. I feel as if they are pretty open minded and generally
nice people. There are a few characteristic that set swimmers apart from the normal culture. Most of them have big shoulders which makes sense
because they use them every day in the water. Sometimes one can tell a swimmer from how their hair looks. Some have distinguishable 'fried' hair
that is shiny and messy. Another thing to tell a swimmer is by the amount of food they eat. If anyone has seen a group of swimmers at the cafeteria at
their school, it is mostly likely one

swimming competitions. It is also one of the most popular sports in the Olympics.
The Equipment
Similar to other sports, swimming while you are naked is not the best option. There are some things that you need to have if you want to feel safe and
convenient while doing this activity.
1. Swimsuit – Unless you want other people to see your naked body, you need to wear a swimsuit. Just like other sports equipment, swimsuits have
benefited from the modern technology. Certain fabrics are manufactured to create minimal resistance while the individual is swimming. In addition,
modern swimsuits can last for a long period of time and resist fading even when regularly used in chlorine–treated swimming pools.
Obviously, not every swimmer would be at ease wearing the revealing swimsuits worn by Olympians. But you don't have to worry. You can easily buy

It is hard to think that in one instant an entire years' worth of dedication, hard work, and countless hours of training can come crashing down without
a single ounce of control over the situation. I never thought this would be something that happened to me. I am careful, I do not take many risks, I do
not engage in any dangerous behavior, and I try not to make any stupid decisions. Apparently in the summer of 2015 none of that mattered and life

making me who I am today. Swimming has taught me time management, respect towards others, how to be a good competitor, and given me an

Swimming Coach Research Paper
I have been a swimmer for almost my whole entire life, and have had many challenges to overcome within this sport. Having two a day practices
each two to three hours long, waking up in complete darkness to get ready for swim meets and jumping into the freezing cold water are all part of the
swimming experience. I have had some very good coaches, and not so good coaches throughout my 12 years of swimming. Coaches are an imperative
part of any athlete's career, and having a coach that is hard to get along with can cause a lot of conflict.
Going into my senior year of high school, I knew that the coming swim season was going to be very different from the previous three years. We were
getting a whole new coaching staff, two swim coaches, one dive ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
We have eight practices each week that consists of five in pool practices and three dryland practices. If we had a meet on a Saturday, Tuesday
evening, or Thursday evening dryland practice would not be cancelled, and swimmers would still need to attend. This concerned a lot of
swimmers since our past coaches would let us skip practice if we had a reasonable excuse. During finals week, we got a lot of complaints saying
that they needed to skip practice to study for a final, but couldn't afford to miss any more practices. So instead of skipping practice they would show
up and study for their final the morning of their test. Coach Gayle expected everybody to come to practice, and would put our attendance and times
on a piece of paper at the wall directly in front of the pool. If she wasn't satisfied with the team percentage she would take the initiative to email the
parents telling them to get their daughter to practice. When the interval was too difficult to make on time, and somebody would confront her about it
she would yell at them to stop complaining. The whole team did the same set but with different intervals, and she would whistle whenever the fastest
lane finished their set making everybody come back to get ready for the next set. As a captain we got a ton of complaints from the swimmers

Swimming Biomechanics
If you woke up breathing, congratulations! You have another chance. ~Andrea Boydston
I began swimming at the age of 4 and I was fortunate to earn a college swimming scholarship at Purdue University. At Purdue, I was a good swimmer
and really worked hard each and every day. However, my at the time girlfriend (and current wife, also a swimmer) always said I looked like a
recreational swimmer! She made this comment as I wore "old school" foam goggles and my head moved all around during freestyle. Needless to say,
my breathing biomechanics were far from ideal, despite being on a collegiate swimming scholarship!
Breathing is a simplistically complex task. Everyone can breathe, but the mechanics are complicated. Unfortunately, in swimming this ... Show more

Therefore, this information isn't ground breaking. Yet, if one is anxious or stressed, they'll begin taking short, shallow breaths. This short, shallow
breathing is highly damaging to swimming performance, as it will increase your breathing frequency and fatigue of the inspiratory muscles. Moreover,
you'll constantly feel out of breath and tired with this fast and shallow breathing pattern.
Tip: If you can't stay relaxed, hold you breath for 3 seconds underwater, then exhale directly before your next breath.
Lifting the head or armpit breathing are two common swimming flaws during the freestyle breathing motion. These motions greatly impede the
swimming stroke as they create more drag. Recently, Formosa (2014) researched breathing and drag in elite male and female swimmers.
"The male participants demonstrated that the breathing action caused a greater (26 %) net drag force compared to the females (16 %). To further
understand the influence of breathing on swimming technique, each stroke was analyzed and comparisons were made between the breathing and

The Advantage Of Swimming
Advantages of Swimming "Only 56 percent of American can perform core swimming skills" (Feeney). These skills include things like jumping or
stepping water over one's head, returning to the surface to tread water or float for one minute, circling around and identifying an exit. Swimming 25
yards to that point and then exiting the water. Than there are stories of people who are 70 plus getting in the pool and learning to swim for the first
time and how its helping them live longer and happier lives. Swimming has been helping people physically, mentally, and socially.
Swimming helps improve the pulmonary and Cardiovascular systems. For example, "Swimming is thus frequently recommended to asthmatics as a
safe and enjoyable mean to maintain their lung function, to increase their aerobic capacity and to improve their quality of life" (Bernard). The motion
that every stroke takes, promotes controlled, deep breathing, by using the diaphragm and therefore increases lung volume, letting your lungs more in a
certain about of time. Swimming also helps the Cardiovascular part of the body. "By creating the blood vessels, it increases blood volume, which can
lower blood pressure" (Alic and Cataldo). Circulation in general becomes better, because of swimming. The water pressure on the legs and the feet
moves the blood upward through the veins of the body (Alic and Cataldo ). Swimming can benefit your pulmonary and cardiovascular system

My Sport Is Swimming
A sport I like the most is currently swimming. I don't really know why I like it, but I enjoy the sport. I always liked water and I really enjoyed
spending my time playing in the bath when I was a kid. I always liked to spend my time in the water, when the weather was capable. But I started
with more В«professionalВ» practices when I was ten years old, and that is a little late compared to usual age you start your sport activities.
Swimming is often an invidual sport, but it can also be team sport as well. The sport itself is about to get yourself through the water as fast as you
can. The time, of course, is not so important if you are not a professional swimmer. In swimming you have four different styles, which you use to get
yourself further. The styles are: butterfly, backstroke, breaststroke and freestyle. Freestyle has been invented first, and is the most popular and
effective way of swimming. As other styles were invented over the time, butterfly was the last style to be officially accepted as the one of them.

The Swimming Event Of Doom
In the past, when people asked me what my biggest fear is I would often lie and say I was deadly afraid of spiders or the dark. But, there was
actually a real fear which I obtained. It was the 200 IM, a swimming event which consists of 50 yard of butterfly, backstroke, breaststroke and
freestyle. Every swimmer has that one event which the dread or wish didn 't exist. For different swimmers, this "Event of Doom" may vary from the
500 yard freestyle or the 200 yard butterfly. For some there may be a story behind their reason but for others, it may be just because they are
downright scared of swimming it. For me I had had a bad past with it and wanted to hide the story as much as possible; hence, the only people who

I plunged into the deep water unsure of whether my decision was the right thing to do. I slowly started swimming a few strokes of freestyle lazily, lifting
my hand only a few inches on top of the water. I had this bad feeling in the back of head and although I wanted to believe that it was possible for me
to do it, I couldn 't bring myself to the fact.
"Next event, 200 I.M. Girls, ages 11 to 12." I heard the announcer say through the speakers. I took one last look at my coach and gave her eyes filled
with fright and nervousness, like a scared ant being being stared down by a kid with a magnifying glass.
"Let's go Rhea!" I heard my coach urge. "I just know you can!"
"Swimmers, step up," called the announcer. He waited until the six swimmers walked up to their diving blocks. I stepped on the block and was
medas there was an earthquake around me that only affected me and constantly causing my feet to wobble. The swimmers bent down and held the
edge of the diving blocks. I looked so ready and professional on the diving block, but inside my stomach was on the world's biggest rollercoaster and
my heart was the one who wanted to jump out into the pool. The water smiled gleefully and taunting at me.
I heard a piercing sound and decided that it was do or die. I jumped with my hands squeezed in a streamline, slightly shaking and it was only about
five seconds before my head would touch the cool water. From the corner of my eye, I saw the swimmers

to people. I had tried other sports; baseball, soccer, basketball, but I found those to difficult. My dad first brought me to a pool, to splash around in
the play area. But I soon found myself wanting to go the deeper parts where the whirlpool and the lazy river were. So I began group lessons on the
basics on how to swim, most of the other participants were older than me so I did not make conversation with them. After I finished a couple of
lessons and learned how to swim the most basic two strokes; freestyle and breaststroke, I joined a summer team, the Bradley Farm Wave. I was not very

By this time I had started to go through puberty and became taller which enabled me to swim faster. The morning group was full of dedicated
swimmers who were crazy enough to get up every morning to go jump into a pool and practice. Of course I was no different, but during April of that
season I had started to lose my motivation. I began to skip practices and gave my parents excuses, which then they told me to take it easy. After two
months of periodic practices, I realized that swimming was an activity that I wanted to do and that I loved, and I decided that I would not allow
myself to quit, no matter how hard it became. When the new season started, I started to push myself, trying to keep up to the faster swimmers. I
became close with my team mates as people who go through pain together get closer. We started to have more fun together from going out, to having
funny conversations in the locker rooms. I also began to do travel meets where we would spend a few days together, eating, sleeping, and swimming. I
spent more time out of the pool with my friends and even became romantically involved with one. Now, swimming has become one of the most

Narrative Swimming : The Challenges For The Sport Of Swimming
"Swimmers take your mark!" echo around me as I crouch forward on the swimming starting platform. Every muscle in my body is tingling and
aching to dive forward and to feel the cool water swallow me before I race forward. When I was younger, my father would enter me into any triathlon
that was available for my age. I would travel all around Georgia and South Carolina competing in the straining contest of swimming, biking, and
running. As my life progressed, I focused more on the sport of competitive swimming. While growing up, I swam for various competitive swimming
teams such as the Brynwood Swim and Racket Club, The Family Y, my high school's swim team, and Aiken
–Augusta Swim League. I always thrived in
the pool, receiving blue ribbons and medals galore. During my high school swim season, I qualified for State Championships with my relay team at
Georgia Tech. Our relay team was the first to go to State Championships for my school, Davidson Fine Arts. Although competitive swimming is a
great pastime and talent of mine, there are many challenges that I may share with other competitive swimmers. The challenges of competitive
swimming are the risk of injury, the cost, and the lack of time that keeps me from fully engaging in and enjoying the sport. People consider the sport
of swimming to be the best exercise because it is fun, relaxing, and gives a great cardio workout, however, the risk of injuries are a considerable
downside to swimming. The risk of injuries is

Reflection On Swimming
Introduction
At the beginning of the semester, the health behaviour change I started pursuing is to swim regularly. My goal of engage in this exercise is to acquire
and grasp at least one swimming style by the end of this semester, and the outcome I expect to obtain from it is the improvement of physical fitness.
Swimming is a strength–consuming aerobic exercise that brings a variety benefits to one's physiological and psychological states. Scholarly research
has indicated that swimming contributes to weight loss and acceleration of illness recovery (Yuan et al., 2016). Also, it can improve emotional state,
physical mobility and functional capacity, all of which can lead to a better quality of life (Karapolat et al., 2009). Leg–arm coordination and neural
plasticity were both found to be correlated with long–term swimming behaviour. For aerobic exercises in general, it enhances pulmonary functions and
cognitive functions.

registered a swimming lesson for beginners at Hart House fitness centre. The sessions took place every Monday and each took 50 minutes. My
attendance of the lesson each week was counted towards the dosage, which means that apart from the lesson, I intend to swim by myself at least once
a week to practice and strengthen what I had learned in the lesson. For each practice session, I aimed on swimming 40 to 50

Race Analysis In Swimming
When looking at my race analyses, I see I'm certainly biased towards the 50–m freestyle. The extra attention comes down to one main reason: the 50–m
is the easiest to analyze. For one, it is the shortest, but also, the cameramen typically give you another view of the race, helping myself obtain data.
Anyway, for past race analyses, be sure to checkout our race analysis page. In the 50–m freestyle final, Florent Manaudou of France won easily with a
time of 21.19 seconds. Second place with to Nathan Adrian of the United States with a 21.52, which was 0.15 seconds slower than his semi–final time
of 21.37 seconds. Now, understanding the differences in race strategy provides insight into where the race was won. Start Florent Manaudou had...

delay the initiation of his kick by ~0.25 seconds. This delay will allow him to maintain his starting velocity longer, as well as reduce his overall
strokes required in the race. Manaudou should try to maintain his stroke rate into the wall and finish without looking forward. This forward look
creates massive frontal drag and these bad habits may cost him a close race giving him not reason to lane line lounge.

My View On Swimming : My Life Of Swimming
Swimming is a sport where most people, like myself, start young. I started when I was seven years old, now bringing me to my eleventh year in
the pool. My dad always told people how I went through every sport and hated them all until i tried out for swimming and I just "fell in love".
Whenever I would hear him tell people this I always though, "No, swim was just the one I hated the least." I liked the pool and all the friends I made,
but swimming back and forth watching the black line for two straight hours sucked and it still does till this day. You can ask ask just about any
swimmer and no one will say that they love the sets that their coaches give them or they love when they add time for a straight year, because
hormones are a real thing in the female body and plateaus in swimming have an odd correlation with it. Years go by so fast in swim, that by the time
you consider quitting and too late ad there is not enough time to start a new sport and be good at it, or at least that was my view on swim. Eleven
years is such a long time to do the same sets, with the same people, in the same pool everyday. To be completely honest, I still do not know why I
chose to swim for this long. I feel that for as many years as I have been swimming, I have only truly enjoyed myself for the past three months.
There is something about senior year that slaps you in the face and says "Hey, you are only gonna be here for so much longer!" As I have begun
reaching out trying to get recruited to swim, the unfortunate reality is coming to me that right now I am not fast enough to swim at the schools I
want to attend. So what's next. Do I appreciate the years I have already had and enjoy this last season before I graduate and never wear a cap again in
my life? My dad seems to think that if I really want to get faster, I need to play waterpolo. The problem is that if I play water polo, I will miss half of
my last swim season and risk the possibiliy that I end up getting slower. From a religious standpoint, I know that I have been blessed in so many
ways that I do not deserve, but if God does not want me to swim in college, why would he show me everything I love about it right before it comes to
an end? Why would he give me

Persuasive Speech About Swimming
1. It's not as easy as it looks
I have heard enough people say that they would be great swimmers, or maybe that it is super easy and they could do it no problem. That is NOT the
case. I have been swimming for 3+ years; I know what a 2 hour morning practice feels like. It is not something anyone should take for granted. Even I,
who has been swimming for a really long time, absolutely despises those practices. And yes, I still sometimes go to them. Your coach will push you
at meets to do a stroke that you are horrible at. For example, my swim coach used to always make me do backstroke at meets, and I would do terrible.
But that's ok. I have dealt with more than someone who has only been swimming for a year or less. On my new team here in Colorado, I have gone
through three coaches, and so many bad meets. On my old team I went through horrible coaches, and I was moved up to a group that was higher than
my level. So if you are looking into starting swimming, understand that you may have to go to meets at 6 AM on a Saturday. And even if you don't
want to, you will not regret your choices because you will have had fun in the end.
2. It takes a lot of work––you can't blow everything off
As I said in my last paragraph, you may have to go to a 6 AM meet somewhere that is an hour away from where you live. Which means waking up
earlier to get there on time. More recently, I went to a meet and only swam one race because my alarm didn't go off. My coach wasn't mad. He was
happy that I made it for at least one race. You also can't go to a meet and walk up to you coach to tell them that you can't do a race because you
hate that stroke. I may hate backstroke, but I still do my races. The only way for you to get better at a stroke is to do it and work harder on it so
that you can improve. With practices, I go to three practices a week, or maybe more. That is enough to keep you going and for you to keep
improving. You can't just not go to practice when you don't have a logical reason for not going. You can't go to just one either, that won't make you
faster or improve your technique at all.
3. You need to have good technique
The first team I was on was basically based on technique and perfecting it. That is the main thing

Different Forms For Swimming : The Importance Of Swimming
Swimming is a sport that can be swum individually or as a team. It's typically swum in filtered swimming pools, but sometimes competitions can take
place in open bodies of water. The overall objective is to swim faster than your competition. The race can be swum in different forms; the butterfly
stroke, backstroke, breaststroke, front crawl, freestyle, an individual medley, and a relay race. Swimming each stroke requires specific techniques, and
in competition, there are specific regulations concerning the acceptable form for the different strokes.
A front crawl calls for you to kick hard with your feet, while bringing your arms over your head and into the water one at a time. While the backstroke
has many similarities to the front crawl, you float on your back, rather than propel your front through the water first. The butterfly stroke calls for you to
bring both arms over your head at the same time and push them into the water to propel yourself. The butterfly stroke uses a dolphin–style kick, which
means that your legs will stay straight and together as you kick them through the water. The breaststroke usually means a frog–style kick, where you
will bend your knees and then kick your legs out beneath the water. Your arm stroke will begin with a sweep out from your chest and then a sweep in
back to your chest. Finally, although not used in competition, the sidestroke holds importance for swimmers because you can use it to rescue someone,
since it only requires one arm.

Swimming At High School Swimming
Swimming is a skill most learn as means for pure survival. However, some people take the skill to the next level, and participate in the sport of
competitive swimming. Ranging from local neighborhood summer swim leagues to the world broadcasted Olympics, competitive swimming has
participants of all levels. Among these levels is the high school team level, which is commonly found among the many sports on most high schools
lists. At any level of competitive swimming, the swimmers showcase their talents at highly anticipated swim meets. To the spectators swim meets are
an exciting venue to view the individual athlete 's incredible talents. However, behind the scenes there is so much more to be discovered. Although my
visit confirmed my thoughts on how exciting the swim meet atmosphere is, I was surprised to learn about the team aspect of a sport that is usually
thought of as an individual sport.
Like most high school swim meets, the district twelve swim meet started bright and early on a wintry morning. It was around 6:30am, when the
Samuel Clemens high school swim team boarded the bright yellow school bus to venture out to the natatorium. This particular meet was being held at

Imagery In Swimming
As a collegiate swimmer, doing anything in my power to improve my times in order to help the team succeed is a crucial part of my day–to–day
activities. Based on this article, one thing that I can add to my routine is using imagery to visualize my events. Visualization is defined as creating
/re–creating the experience of activity in the mind (Post, Muncie, & Simpson, 2012). Previous research proposes that creating these experiences
facilitates skill acquisition, performance, motivation, confidence and arousal (Post et al., 2012). This research has been performed previously on
certain sports that are discrete (have a definite beginning and end) and have typically shown that imagery has been a beneficial aspect to improving

The swimmers were also selected based on practice attendance and lack of injury (Post et al., 2012). The data was taken from practice sessions
collected once a week, on the same day during each phase of the study. The study was conducted in a single–subject–multiple baseline design because it
allowed all participants to be their own control and receive treatment (Post et al., 2012). Each participant's imagery ability was originally tested using
the Movement Imagery Questionnaire–Revised before the imagery training began (Post et al., 2012). During testing periods, the participants swam
1000 yards of their preferred stroke, 3 did freestyle while the 4th did five 200 individual medleys (butterfly, backstroke, breaststroke, and freestyle)
while the coach collected the times for each swimmer. Once the swimmer was able to establish a baseline time, indicating consistency in time, the
imagery intervention was introduced. The investigator established individualized scripts for each swimmer to perform including practicing basic
images (Post et al., 2012). Each script contained an audio piece that participants were supposed to listen to twice a week and once before the timed
practice (Post et al., 2012). The data points (time it took to swim 1000 yards) was then plotted and visual inspection techniques, including evaluating
levels of change, overlapping data, and changes in slopes, were used to analyze the data (Post et al.,

My Experience Of Swimming
Swimming demands nothing short of perfection.
I was ten when I first entered into a major Swimming competition, a stepping–stone towards achieving my dreams. Hours were poured into training and
sacrifices made simply for a perfect race to the podium. I had arrived 3 hours earlier, and to my dismay that the competition had been delayed. My
parents hid their apparent annoyance, in hope that the long wait would prove its worth, yet only to find out it actually was not. The long wait took its
toil on me and panic overcame me at the starting blocks. In a field of 8 swimmers, the number '8' flashed brightly against my name, glistening tears
welled up in my eyes as failure washed over me.
I hated that part of Swimming. It washed away hours and years of work and sacrifices, dashed the big dreams of a 10 year old, and failed high
expectations laid bare for all to see. I hated Swimming for its ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In that sense, perfectionism is like a drug, an insidious poison that infiltrates every part of me. A self–induced madness that one moment raises me to
the pinnacle of elation, and the next drags me to the darkest recesses of frustration and disappointment. Sometimes I think I would trade up almost
anything for one more hit of that pleasure, almost completely regardless of the consequence.
Everyone has a side of him or her that may ultimately lead to their downfall. Mine is, of no doubt, my obsession with perfection. It is a question I
face with on a daily basis: How far am I willing to go to attain that perfection, to turn my ideals into reality?
At then, for most, the answer to the question is simple: As far as I want to. For me, the answer was even simpler, though much complicated: All the
way. Even if it means giving up the things that should matter the most, I guess I was blinded looking through the lenses of

19Th Century Swimming

  • 1. 19th Century Swimming Swimming became a true sport in the 19th century when Great Britain began to start holding competitions to see who could get from one side of the pool to the other the fastest. The first type of stroke that they used was breaststroke because that was the easiest way to swim at the time while still being able to breathe. As time progressed the British started using a stroke called the forward crawl with a scissor kick, however a man named Frederick Cavill in 1887 traveled to the South Seas and saw people using the forward crawl but with a flutter kick which is now our modern day freestyle. Swimming first became featured in the Olympics in 1896 and the only strokes that were raced were Freestyle and Breaststroke. Backstroke was added in 1904 ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 2. Swimming Is Not A Natural Act Most people believe that the most efficient and effective way to lose weight is either by jogging or running. They think this because running is done on land, involves very hard movements of the arms and legs, and their heartrates are going at 5 beats per second. People always seem to forget that a better, easier and less vigorous way to get fit is through swimming. Swimming is moving your body through a body of water, either a pool or ocean, using your arms and legs, while running is moving quickly on land with your feet. Swimming is not a natural act but a learned talent. According to Dr. Howard Wainer, a swimmer and statistician at the Educational Testing Service in Princeton, N.J., thehuman body was not meant to move quickly through water. Most people believe that its harder to run than to swim but the fact is that it's harder to swim. In swimming water acts as the resistance while in running, air is the resistance. Water is a lot thicker than air which makes it harder to move through. When running, performance peters out as the distances get longer but in swimming the pace is consistent regardless of the distance. Swimming has a lot of benefits which most people don't know about. Swimming keeps your heartrate up without overstressing the body. It builds endurance, muscle strength and cardiovascular fitness. Swimming also keeps the heart and the lungs healthy. All the muscles are used while swimming so it's a good all–over body workout. Also, according to research done ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Swimming Monologue I wake up barely dawn, when the early morning is still unpleasantly chilly and most of my peers are comfortably cuddled in their blankets. I, on the other hand, will dive into the pool. My weary limbs urging me to go back to bed, but my ambitious heart encouraging me to move forward. I keep going, training, and racing for the next two and a half hour; everyday, until my arms are too tired to lift my aching body out of the pool. Some days were easy. I had motivation and full of energy. Others, were much more difficult and I had to improvise, adapt, and overcome. Swimming is an integral part of my life–between training at swim practice, lifeguarding and teaching swimming lessons, I rarely spend any time on land. Swimming not only helped me see that there will always be room for improvement, but I am also motivated to push myself to the limits in the friendly competitive setting. Getting to see and observe the competition allows me to see where I want to set my next goal and where I could improve wherever it be technique or time. Walking up at 5:30 a.m. for six days a week for the grueling two and a half hour practice has developed my self–discipline, as well as taught me how to manage my time efficiently and prioritize. With my busy schedule of work, school, and extracurricular activities, I have to be able to squeeze in everything along with sleep or sacrifice some matters over another sometimes. • 4. Monologue Swimming My eyelids slowly unfasten from one another to a stentorian alarm. I turn off my alarm. Half my body wants to get up and go, and the other half just wants to go back asleep. I roll over to get up. But my body wants so badly to go back to sleep. I tell myself plenty of people will this morning there's no need to get up at 5:00 just to go to swim practice. Coach won't even notice i'm not there. After these slothful thoughts past my body is finally able to resist my bed's clasp over me. Every Morning do the same thing, and go through the same thoughts. I do all this just to jump into a cold pool, and tire myself out before the day starts. Swimming is the sport that everyone pokes fun at, but not everyone can do. Nor is everyone willing to ... • 5. Swimming To Antarctica Summary Swimming to Antarctica is a story about how Lynne Cox attempt to complete the grueling swim. Lynne's goal to finish the swim is motivated by her effort, determination and bravery. Can Lynne overcome her difficulties and finish the swim, or will she let it all slip away? Lynne will be doing a mile long swim in the freezing, thirty–two degree water. That is the temperature when fresh water freezes. If Lynne's cells froze, then the body tissue could result in a permanent life threatening situation. In Lynne's cabin she questioned herself, "Would my core temperature drop faster?", "Would i be able to tell if I was in immediate danger?". Swimmers need these because the water is so cold the layer of fat would help keep her warm. Gabriella came in to take a core temperature, it was about 100.4 degrees. This was higher than usual, because she was so psyched. She rubbed sunscreen on her face, but none on her arms and legs because she would be slippery if the crew needed to pull her out of the water in an emergency. Before Lynne stepped out onto the ramp Dr. Block traced two veins in her arm with a blue marker, it was just a precaution in case of an emergency. Though ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Different individuals think and feel differently about swimming. Consequently, the concepts, notions and ideas regarding swimming vary greatly. If you have been learning and practicing swimming for quite some time now, you must have come across contradictory opinions and judgments about both swimming and swimmers. Since most people commit the mistake of drawing conclusions depending on their personal experiences, the myths that make their rounds are in plenty. As a swimmer, you should know only what is right and then decide, depending on suitability. So, here's busting some of the common myths about swimming for you to have clear knowledge ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Swimmers using paddles end up exerting too much pressure on their rotator cuff muscles as well as the triceps. Another disadvantage of practicing with the paddles is that when you stop using them, you are most likely to swing off right at the back of the set. So, the lesser you use paddles, the better you are as a swimmer. Consult your expert and learn about alternative stroke styles and techniques in order to improve your ability of pulling in the waters. Kicking Does Not Help in Forward Propulsion This is perhaps the greatest misconception about swimming techniques that have become popular. The importance of kicks often remains unrecognized by the swimmers. The reality is just the opposite. Legs help in propelling ahead just as much as the arms do. In fact, swimming experts with years of coaching are of the opinion that the faster you kick, the faster you are in the waters. Swimming is Not Meant for the Too Small ... A person probably fell into the water and struggled to shore using a dog–paddle stroke. There was an Egyptian hieroglyph for swimming dating from 2500 BC. The ancient Greeks and Romans made swimming an important part of their military training programs. There have been known swimming contests that were organized in Japan as early as the 1st century BC. Although few doubt the aerobic benefits of swimming, studies comparing swimming with jogging, results found that swimmers lost less body fat than joggers. Apparently swimming causes an adjustment in how energy is burned, resulting in the burning of more carbohydrates than body fat. One reason might be that swimmers retain more body fat to insulate and maintain body heat. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

In 1873, this hybrid stroke became known as the Trudgen stroke. 4.Trudgen effectively changed England's swimming styles from endurance based to more speed based. iv. Another swimming pioneer, Fredrick Cavill , helped further develop Trudgen's stroke into an even faster stroke known as the front crawl (livestrong.com). 1.He was an Englishman and a notable swimmer who emigrated to Australia. 2.Like Arthur Trudgen, Cavill observed the natives of the Solomon Islands and found that Trudgen's stroke would have been significantly faster if he would have incorporated the native's kicking action. 3.Cavill refined the native's stroke and taught it to his sons, one of which would later use the stroke in a competition in England. 4.Since England was still using the Trudgen stoke, Cavill's son Richard, destroyed his competition with the more efficient stroke, which he described as, "crawling through the water" (usaswimming.org). Hence, the name front crawl. 2.As I previously mentioned, I will describe the four basic strokes that swimming consists of, such as the freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke, and

  • 12. Goals For Swimming Research Paper If you could chose between swimming and running, what would you chose? The key is that swimming encompasses much more that just doing laps in a pool. It is going out in the ocean and exploring shipwrecks and coral reefs. It is playing water polo with a group of friends on holiday or just having fun messing around in the water. Swimming is important because it allows me to actively participate in physical activities by being enjoyable, makes me want to continue physical activity so I can maintain a healthy body, and allows me to establish goals for my future by challenging me. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... I like to swim because I ignore what everyone else is doing and focus on myself. The times of other swimmers and their form compared to mine is not important because what matters to me is that I challenge myself and improve. Because of this, I set a goal for myself, and then take baby steps to reach that goal. An example of this is when I was training to become a certified scuba diver. At first, I was not the best at swimming because I never really learned how to do it properly. I took baby steps to achieving my goal of certification, and it started with learning proper form for the flutter kick. I worked with my instructor and had it done within a day. Then, I moved on to doing the flutter kick with flippers. I did that, and then moved on to doing that with the scuba gear on. This took about two days to get down, but I was able to get certified after I had finished that. This is just an example, and a goal that I am working towards right now in my life is improving the balance of strength in my muscles. The right side of my body is stronger than my left side so I am going swimming at the local YMCA in order to help make my body more balanced. This goal arose from me wanting to challenge myself because when I am swimming, it doesn't matter what kind of shape I am in, I can still improve upon it. • 13. Swimming To Antarctica Analysis Did you know that swimming became an Olympic sport in 1908, but women were not allowed to participate until 1912? That same year, Australian swimmer, Fanny Durack, became the first woman to win a gold medal in the 100–yard freestyle. Why do you think that woman weren't allowed the first few years? Is it because some believed women were not tough enough to handle it? In Lynn Cox's memoir Swimming to Antarctica (Tales of a Long Distance Swimmer), Cox not only expresses the dedication and determination it takes to be an Olympic long distance swimmer, but that she also states that personal dreams are achievable if one is willing enough to work hard to achieve their goals. Cox found the water to be very peaceful in her first distance race at a young age, ever since then, she felt as though she finally found what she was meant to do. If Cox needs any gift at all, it would be a picture of her 2 years before she started long distance swimming. Little did the egyptians know how big the sport of swimming would become. Benjamin Franklin invented swimming fins, the first diving board in England was at Highgate Ponds in 1893, swimming became an olympic sport in 1896, swimming in the olympics began as a mens only competition and in 1912 women were allowed to participate. Not only did swimming become a big deal, it became such an important sport. Swimming is the most beneficial sport because it meets the need of physical and mental health, social encouragement, and personal preferences. Primarily, swimming has excellent health benefits. Swimming is such an amazing sport to help manage weight. One can burn up to 367 calories after just 30 minutes of relaxed breastroke. Believe it or not, that beats walking, cycling, and even running. Swimming is a full body workout. From the moment you dive into the pool to begin swimming laps, every muscle in your bod is challenged. Butterfly, backstroke, breastroke, and freestyle are using all the muscles from head to toe. The upper– body muscles that are used include the pectorals, deltoids, biceps, triceps, and wrist flexors. The lower– body muscles include the calves, quads, hamstrings, and glutes. Having strong muscles doesn't just have cosmetic benefits. • 19. Dryland Training In Swimming Dryland training in swimming dates back to early times. Running, push–ups, pull–ups, common military training techniques have been incorporated in swimming training for years. This remained the staple for years. Resistance training began with medicine balls, progressing to dumbbells, barbells, and many more items in the 80s as Arnold was beginning to make strength cool. Functional movements entered the sport in the 90s, as many doubted if "adding muscle" benefited swimming and if the traditional big 3 lifts (bench press, deadlift, back squat) transferred to swimming. In the past decade, strength training and full body resistance training has popped it's head back into swimming training. Like swimming, strength and conditioning training is evolving, ... What this article should highlight is that if you are an upper level, elite swimmer, or simply want what is best, you need an in–person strength coach. This strength coach must understand swimming or at least listen to the swim coach about training phases, tapers, etc. This person could also run a program written by a digital strength coach. Unfortunately, I have not been able to get this to work properly, as it is hard to ensure what you suggest is being done miles away. Also, many coaches don't like to be robots and dictate something they didn't write or worse what they don't believe in, this includes swimming and strength coaches. Now, many swim coaches will read this and think they can be the in–person dryland coach, but this isn't the case. If you want to build the best swimmers, get a certified professional. • 20. Reflection Paper On Swimming Attentiveness is a key value the team holds. Everyone needs to be there and ready to go by the start of practice. If someone is late they get talked to by one of the coaches which is one of their sanctions they practice. Being attentive is a good lesson swimmers learn that gets them ready for having a job after college. At morning practice, it is kind of astonishing to see the swimmers being unexpectedly energetic, especially at 5:40 AM. Before jumping into the pool, I noticed a lot of the swimmers were doing some sort of dance. They were swinging their arms, jumping up and down, stretching, etc. I think They are doing some dynamic warm ups they go through before entering into the pool. They do this to get them loose and ready to swim. It almost as if it is a ritual they do before every practice or before every event at a meet. It like how Michael Phelps flops his arms around behind the blocks before racing. Swimmers are a unique subculture as well. I feel as if they are pretty open minded and generally nice people. There are a few characteristic that set swimmers apart from the normal culture. Most of them have big shoulders which makes sense because they use them every day in the water. Sometimes one can tell a swimmer from how their hair looks. Some have distinguishable 'fried' hair that is shiny and messy. Another thing to tell a swimmer is by the amount of food they eat. During finals week, we got a lot of complaints saying that they needed to skip practice to study for a final, but couldn't afford to miss any more practices. So instead of skipping practice they would show up and study for their final the morning of their test. Coach Gayle expected everybody to come to practice, and would put our attendance and times on a piece of paper at the wall directly in front of the pool. If she wasn't satisfied with the team percentage she would take the initiative to email the parents telling them to get their daughter to practice. When the interval was too difficult to make on time, and somebody would confront her about it she would yell at them to stop complaining. She made this comment as I wore "old school" foam goggles and my head moved all around during freestyle. Yet, if one is anxious or stressed, they'll begin taking short, shallow breaths. This short, shallow breathing is highly damaging to swimming performance, as it will increase your breathing frequency and fatigue of the inspiratory muscles. Moreover, you'll constantly feel out of breath and tired with this fast and shallow breathing pattern. Tip: If you can't stay relaxed, hold you breath for 3 seconds underwater, then exhale directly before your next breath. Lifting the head or armpit breathing are two common swimming flaws during the freestyle breathing motion. These motions greatly impede the swimming stroke as they create more drag. Recently, Formosa (2014) researched breathing and drag in elite male and female swimmers. My goal of engage in this exercise is to acquire and grasp at least one swimming style by the end of this semester, and the outcome I expect to obtain from it is the improvement of physical fitness. Swimming is a strength–consuming aerobic exercise that brings a variety benefits to one's physiological and psychological states. Scholarly research has indicated that swimming contributes to weight loss and acceleration of illness recovery (Yuan et al., 2016). Also, it can improve emotional state, physical mobility and functional capacity, all of which can lead to a better quality of life (Karapolat et al., 2009). Leg–arm coordination and neural plasticity were both found to be correlated with long–term swimming behaviour. For aerobic exercises in general, it enhances pulmonary functions and cognitive functions. Methods Dosage. After referring to my school and work schedule, I decided to swim at least two times a week. • 34. My View On Swimming : My Life Of Swimming Swimming is a sport where most people, like myself, start young. I started when I was seven years old, now bringing me to my eleventh year in the pool. My dad always told people how I went through every sport and hated them all until i tried out for swimming and I just "fell in love". Whenever I would hear him tell people this I always though, "No, swim was just the one I hated the least." I liked the pool and all the friends I made, but swimming back and forth watching the black line for two straight hours sucked and it still does till this day. You can ask ask just about any swimmer and no one will say that they love the sets that their coaches give them or they love when they add time for a straight year, because hormones are a real thing in the female body and plateaus in swimming have an odd correlation with it. Years go by so fast in swim, that by the time you consider quitting and too late ad there is not enough time to start a new sport and be good at it, or at least that was my view on swim. Eleven years is such a long time to do the same sets, with the same people, in the same pool everyday. To be completely honest, I still do not know why I chose to swim for this long. I feel that for as many years as I have been swimming, I have only truly enjoyed myself for the past three months. There is something about senior year that slaps you in the face and says "Hey, you are only gonna be here for so much longer!" As I have begun reaching out trying to get recruited to swim, the unfortunate reality is coming to me that right now I am not fast enough to swim at the schools I want to attend. So what's next. Do I appreciate the years I have already had and enjoy this last season before I graduate and never wear a cap again in my life? My dad seems to think that if I really want to get faster, I need to play waterpolo. The problem is that if I play water polo, I will miss half of my last swim season and risk the possibiliy that I end up getting slower. • 35. Persuasive Speech About Swimming 1. It's not as easy as it looks I have heard enough people say that they would be great swimmers, or maybe that it is super easy and they could do it no problem. That is NOT the case. I have been swimming for 3+ years; I know what a 2 hour morning practice feels like. It is not something anyone should take for granted. Even I, who has been swimming for a really long time, absolutely despises those practices. And yes, I still sometimes go to them. Your coach will push you at meets to do a stroke that you are horrible at. For example, my swim coach used to always make me do backstroke at meets, and I would do terrible. But that's ok. I have dealt with more than someone who has only been swimming for a year or less. On my new team here in Colorado, I have gone through three coaches, and so many bad meets. On my old team I went through horrible coaches, and I was moved up to a group that was higher than my level. So if you are looking into starting swimming, understand that you may have to go to meets at 6 AM on a Saturday. And even if you don't want to, you will not regret your choices because you will have had fun in the end. 2. It takes a lot of work––you can't blow everything off As I said in my last paragraph, you may have to go to a 6 AM meet somewhere that is an hour away from where you live. Which means waking up earlier to get there on time. More recently, I went to a meet and only swam one race because my alarm didn't go off. My coach wasn't mad. He was happy that I made it for at least one race. You also can't go to a meet and walk up to you coach to tell them that you can't do a race because you hate that stroke. I may hate backstroke, but I still do my races. The only way for you to get better at a stroke is to do it and work harder on it so that you can improve. With practices, I go to three practices a week, or maybe more. That is enough to keep you going and for you to keep improving. You can't just not go to practice when you don't have a logical reason for not going. You can't go to just one either, that won't make you faster or improve your technique at all. 3. The race can be swum in different forms; the butterfly stroke, backstroke, breaststroke, front crawl, freestyle, an individual medley, and a relay race. Swimming each stroke requires specific techniques, and in competition, there are specific regulations concerning the acceptable form for the different strokes. A front crawl calls for you to kick hard with your feet, while bringing your arms over your head and into the water one at a time. While the backstroke has many similarities to the front crawl, you float on your back, rather than propel your front through the water first. The butterfly stroke calls for you to bring both arms over your head at the same time and push them into the water to propel yourself. The butterfly stroke uses a dolphin–style kick, which means that your legs will stay straight and together as you kick them through the water. The breaststroke usually means a frog–style kick, where you will bend your knees and then kick your legs out beneath the water. Your arm stroke will begin with a sweep out from your chest and then a sweep in back to your chest. Finally, although not used in competition, the sidestroke holds importance for swimmers because you can use it to rescue someone, since it only requires one arm. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 37. Informative Essay About Swimming In 2014, the population of the United States was 318.9 million. Of those 318.9 million, 44% do not know how to swim. That is 140,316,000 people. This is a much higher number than I think many people would expect. Learning how to swim can be difficult, but the benefits are abundant. I have been swimming since I was very little. But, I didn't start competitive swim until I was 10 years old. When I first started swimming, I was one of the worst swimmers on the team. Many of the swimmers that were younger than me were much better than I. But I kept trying hard and now I have become much better. It was hard and challenging, but the results are very rewarding. Swimming is the only sport that uses all of the body's major muscles. Many others sports ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Like most high school swim meets, the district twelve swim meet started bright and early on a wintry morning. It was around 6:30am, when the Samuel Clemens high school swim team boarded the bright yellow school bus to venture out to the natatorium. This particular meet was being held at the Josh Davis natatorium, which is a Northeast Side ISD facility. After a brief forty minute bus ride, the eager team arrived to the gigantic two story brown building, that read "Josh Davis Natatorium" directly above the front door. The parking lot was gradually filling up with more school ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 39. Imagery In Swimming As a collegiate swimmer, doing anything in my power to improve my times in order to help the team succeed is a crucial part of my day–to–day activities. Based on this article, one thing that I can add to my routine is using imagery to visualize my events. Visualization is defined as creating /re–creating the experience of activity in the mind (Post, Muncie, & Simpson, 2012). Previous research proposes that creating these experiences facilitates skill acquisition, performance, motivation, confidence and arousal (Post et al., 2012). This research has been performed previously on certain sports that are discrete (have a definite beginning and end) and have typically shown that imagery has been a beneficial aspect to improving sport performance ... The data was taken from practice sessions collected once a week, on the same day during each phase of the study. The study was conducted in a single–subject–multiple baseline design because it allowed all participants to be their own control and receive treatment (Post et al., 2012). Each participant's imagery ability was originally tested using the Movement Imagery Questionnaire–Revised before the imagery training began (Post et al., 2012). During testing periods, the participants swam 1000 yards of their preferred stroke, 3 did freestyle while the 4th did five 200 individual medleys (butterfly, backstroke, breaststroke, and freestyle) while the coach collected the times for each swimmer. Once the swimmer was able to establish a baseline time, indicating consistency in time, the imagery intervention was introduced. The investigator established individualized scripts for each swimmer to perform including practicing basic images (Post et al., 2012). Each script contained an audio piece that participants were supposed to listen to twice a week and once before the timed practice (Post et al., 2012). The data points (time it took to swim 1000 yards) was then plotted and visual inspection techniques, including evaluating levels of change, overlapping data, and changes in slopes, were used to analyze the data (Post et al., ... • 40. My Experience Of Swimming Swimming demands nothing short of perfection. I was ten when I first entered into a major Swimming competition, a stepping–stone towards achieving my dreams. Hours were poured into training and sacrifices made simply for a perfect race to the podium. I had arrived 3 hours earlier, and to my dismay that the competition had been delayed. My parents hid their apparent annoyance, in hope that the long wait would prove its worth, yet only to find out it actually was not. The long wait took its toil on me and panic overcame me at the starting blocks. In a field of 8 swimmers, the number '8' flashed brightly against my name, glistening tears welled up in my eyes as failure washed over me. I hated that part of Swimming. It washed away hours and years of work and sacrifices, dashed the big dreams of a 10 year old, and failed high expectations laid bare for all to see. I hated Swimming for its ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In that sense, perfectionism is like a drug, an insidious poison that infiltrates every part of me. A self–induced madness that one moment raises me to the pinnacle of elation, and the next drags me to the darkest recesses of frustration and disappointment. Sometimes I think I would trade up almost anything for one more hit of that pleasure, almost completely regardless of the consequence. Everyone has a side of him or her that may ultimately lead to their downfall. Mine is, of no doubt, my obsession with perfection. It is a question I face with on a daily basis: How far am I willing to go to attain that perfection, to turn my ideals into reality? At then, for most, the answer to the question is simple: As far as I want to. For me, the answer was even simpler, though much complicated: All the way. Even if it means giving up the things that should matter the most, I guess I was blinded looking through the lenses of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
