20th century and has created itself as the Australian Symbol in many countries.
The Sydney Opera House is one of the most famous architecture jobs of all time. It made in an
expressionist design, with a series of "shell like" buildings, each composed of sections of a

After Utzons resignation, the Sydney Opera House Executive Committee made many changes to the
original design including changes to the original rooms, the construction of glass walls and a
completely new style of hallways and corridors. The interior alone cost a massive total of
$56.5Million, not including the cost of stage equipment and lighting.
Finally, after 14 years of construction, the Sydney Opera House was formally completed at a cost of
$102 Million which was more than 13 times the original cost estimate of $7Million and about 10
years late.
The Sydney Opera House is an enormously iconic building and sculpture which captures the eyes of
many architects to this day. Its outstanding design has enrolled it into a World Heritage Site in 2005.
The sculpture at the time of construction was thought to be a daring and impossible design but after
years of close planning, it became a possible concept. The building is of outstanding universal value
for achievements and structural engineering brilliance. It is one of Australia's main icons, along with
the Sydney Harbour Bridge and Australian War Memorial, but the opera house shows its
significance as an architectural object of great beauty which inspires many young architects.
The Sydney Opera House has housed many events in its 37 years of service. In current figures, the
opera house conducts 3000 events each year. Overall the Sydney Opera House was an evolutionary

first Europeans to land on the west coast of Australia, and named the island "New Holland". In 1770
British explorer James Cook discovered the east coast of Australia. He landed in Botany Bay

Aboriginal Customary Law
Aboriginal law had lasted for hundreds of years before white settlement of Australia in 1788. The
laws were based from the Dreamtime and were formed by ancestors, spirits and Aboriginal beliefs.
These laws were passed down by a word–of–mouth tradition and as there were many different tribes
consisting of many clans spread out over a large area, separate laws were adapted to specific tribes
and areas. Aboriginal customary laws were developed and based on the aboriginal relationship to the
land as well as the view that property (land) and individual belongings were owned by the
community as a whole. All items were collectively used and land was not owned by a particular
tribe. Aboriginal customary law that governed aboriginal life was ... Show more content on

Aboriginal customary law is a central part of many Aboriginal people's way of life. There is less
possibility of an Aboriginal seeing a decision as unjust if it is part of customary law. The opposite is
true of the European legal system. This is because the European system is one that has been imposed
on them and there fore is not seen to understand their needs. The integration of Aboriginal
customary law into the Australian legal system is not a problem as far as the Australian constitution
is concerned. Acts that currently exist include the Aboriginal Land Rights (Northern Territory) Act
(Cth) 1976 which allows indigenous claims to Crown land in the NT to be made on the basis of
traditional concepts of ownership, also in existence is the Aboriginal Communities Act (WA) 1979,
allowing aboriginal communities to make their own (customary law) by–laws. The Aboriginal and

How Did The First World War Affect Australian Culture
Australia's Aboriginal people have the oldest culture on Earth. They are believed to have arrived
here over 50,000 years ago. ("The History of Australia," 11/30/16) When European settlement in
Australia began, there were up to one million Aboriginal people living in Australia: 500 different
clans and 700 different languages. ("The History of Australia," 11/30/16) Many European explorers
sailed the coasts of Australia, but it wasn't until 1770 when Captain James Cook claimed the east
coast of Australia for Britain. The new land was used as a penal site for convicts and prisoners. The
massive colonization had a disastrous effect on the Aboriginal people. They lost much of their land
and they were introduced to many new diseases and illnesses. The rest of the 1800's was brimming
with more immigrants by the minute. Gold in New South Wales lured in thousands of people. This
set off a massive Gold Rush led by Chinese prospectors and illegal sellers from around the world.

Sweeney Todd Essay
Introduction to Sweeney Todd
"Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street" was originally a melodramatic gothic horror
story written by the British playwright Christopher Bond. The play was inspired by the penny
dreadful "The String of Pearls: A Romance" by George Dibdin–Pitt who introduced the character
Sweeney Todd. In 1973, Stephen Sondheim had the opportunity to watch Christopher Bond's
"Sweeney Todd". Sondheim found the production "charming and creepy" however it was not scary.
He was inspired by the plot line and was dedicated to making the story more thrilling, he was
inspired to frighten the audience. After watching Bond's production, he was granted permission from
Bond himself to produce the play as a musical.

book musicals. They are musicals where music and choreography create a dramatic story to convey

Musical theatre started in the fifteenth century, in Greece. They incorporated music and dance into
their performances, which many were comedy based. Slowly, music and dance was integrated into
Roman theatre as well. In the 1700–1800's, Opera became a popular musical entertainment to the
British, French and Germans. They enjoyed ballad operas which included popular tunes at the time
with comedy or sentimental plays, such as John Gay's "The Beggar's Opera" performed in 1728
(http://www.odl.ox.ac.uk/balladoperas/what.php) Many of these opera's were mimicked and comic
operas with original scores and many romantic plot based plays. Many believe that musical theatre
is a descended of Operas, however Operas are actually spoofs of Greek musicals as the artists in the
Renaissance Times were trying to bring out Greek music that faded over many years.

question is how does Australia claim to be a multicultural country but lacks the representation of

Arguments in Favor of Changing the Australian Flag Essay
The article by Sarrah le Marquand, 'Apathy wins flag debate' appears in the tabloid of The
Advertiser (February 2, 2013), and online at 'The Punch: Australia's best conversation', under a
different title, 'Flagging This Change is not unAustralian'. This political opinion is to remove the
Union Jack from the Australian flag. This is an important topic, as National flag's construct
symbolic meaning, identity and "pride" of country (Fozdar, Spittles & Harlety, 2014, p. 2). As a

Using highly persuasive language such as 'sprucing up our residences', she employs the device
pathos. In le Marquand's subsequent paragraphs, she attempts to convince her audience to consider
changing the national emblem through a logical reasoning, known as logos. She uses the Olympic
Games and online comments' to support her argument by using repetitive rhetorical questioning of
Australian "ideologies". 'With those in favor of adopting a Union Jack–free flag promptly accused of
being what else?' 'You want to change our flag?' and 'You refuse to grovel before the British
Commonwealth?' These aggressive accusations where le Marquand expects no real answer, gives
the article a sarcastic tone. The rhetorical questions are frequently responded with colloquial
language. For example, 'Upgrading to a flag that isn't dominated by one belonging to another
country? Why bother?' and 'Whatever!' This gives the reader a sense of assimilation in her opinion;
incorporating direct speech, 'my fellow countrymen', and stylized personal possessive nouns, 'my',
'our', 'we', and 'you'. Enforces the sense of the reader feeling inclusive in what le Marquand's is
saying. This is the devise of ethos, a sense of authority, which is required in a political argument

Australian Stereotype
Representations of the "Australian Persona"
‘Mateship'
A key element of what is presented to be the Australian character is that of camaraderie, base
friendliness towards everybody, and egalitarianism, the belief that everybody is equal and should
have the same opportunities, treatment, etc. as everybody else. As such, Australians are very
supportive of democracy, compulsory voting, and are generally, in most cases, unprejudiced towards
each other based on such trivialities as, for example, social class – everybody will kick back
together at the pub for a ‘coldie' in that ‘typical Aussie scene', described so well in the quote by
Australian legend Henry Lawson, one of the best–known Australian poets and fiction writers of the

Australian casual English, like African–American speech, is one of the most complex forms of
English slang, and not always so easy to understand. Phrases such as "G'day Mate" and "Chuck a
shrimp on the barbie" are well–known internationally as being ‘Australian', having been made
popular by Paul Hogan's representation in the 1986 internationally highest–grossing film Crocodile
Dundee. Numerous examples of the frequent use of common Australian slang can be found in the
six–book series Western Wildcats by Australian author John Larkin, e.g. where phrases such as "But
not any more, but." is characteristic one of the main characters, known as ‘Splinters' – even when
talking to the Queen of England. In the same series, another character, Eric, is ranting about what is
seen as the norms of Australian society and the persona that is represented to be Australian, and as a
part of his tirade states "Somebody who doesn't end every sentence with ‘You Know', you know?"
Australian slang seems to be bent on taking the shortest, easiest possible route for words to come out
of the speaker's mouth, shortening everything to the minimum amount of syllables possible. A cup
of coffee (or tea) becomes a ‘cuppa', football becomes footy etc. This style of common Australian
speech has its roots, once again, in Australia's heritage as a convict colony – a majority of the

Culture, the way of life of a group of people is a very important aspect of human existence. Indeed
the culture of a certain people is extremely significant to them that they strive as much as possible to
prevent its extinction by passing it down from one generation to another. Over the centuries, oral
telling , art making and subsequently writing have been methods of passing and preserving culture
and then recently film making. The film and the media have proven to be an extremely strong factor
when it comes to portrayal, proclamation and even preservation as a result of the numerous numbers
of people the media has access to. For the purpose of this essay, I would be visiting the history of
film in Australia, its cultural importance and significance and its distinct examples in modern day
film.
The Australian film industry has over the years revolutionized from what was called a silent era, to
the sound era and then the new wave. The silent era as the name implies featured film making
without the use of sound while the sound era introduced the addition of sound to films. From the
years 1906 to 1911, Australia happened to be the most prolific producer of feature films in the
world. As at this period in time, Australian producers had easy access to cinema screen because of
the irregular supply of foreign films. This notable success however began to experience a gradual

Australian Economy Research Paper
Some of the major industries of Australian economy are–manufacturing, finance, ship building,
information and technology, agricultural, mining, and insurance. Mining industry is one of the chief
industries which have led to the growth of population in the Australian continent, right from the time
when gold was discovered in Australia. Mineral and fuels top the list of Australian exports. Australia
has often been called resource–rich because of its huge natural deposits of many very useful and
valuable fossil fuels, metals and minerals. Although the agricultural industry has witnessed a fall
from its position during the 1970's, it still contributes towards Australian economy. Australia was
one of the largest exporters of beef and wool in the whole world and the third largest of wine and

Research Paper On Sydney Opera House
Narrative and Details
In 1973, the Sydney Opera House opened its doors for the first time. This came after seventeen
years of construction and setbacks. The design for the opera house was chosen from 220
applications through a competition in 1956. The original design was supposed to feature the arches
by lining the inside of them with gold leaves and have no sides to the arches. These design details
would later be taken out because of cost and structural issues. In 1966, the project came to a halt
because of leadership disagreements. In 1968, construction began again, and the opera house was
able to open in 1973. Ever since then, the Sydney Opera House has been an unbelievable hit with

Along with this, Australia also has the toughest fishing regulations in the world. One of their biggest

Overall the Sydney Fish Market takes pride in what they do and will continue to keep the tradition

Reflective Summary The Australian fish market plays a very big role in Australian agriculture. It
was interesting to see completely different side of agriculture then what a farm kid in Iowa sees
because we are a landlocked state. I didn't realize that there were so many different types of fish that
people eat. My fish consumption before Australia was basically church fish fries and fish sticks.
Little did I know, I would be eating Gummy Shark when I ordered fish and chips. The idea of not
being able to communicate with your sellers because they are illiterate, really interested me. I would
have never guessed this was a problem going into the market. I can understand why this is one of

Legacy Of The Whitlam Government
The legacy of this government was that it instigated major changes in the social and cultural fabric
of Australia but it also challenged the philosophy of what an Australian is and what Australia
represented. The late 1960s and early 1970s were times of great change. Perspectives and
acceptances about imperialism, women's liberation, racism, ideology, religion, war, morality, social
responsibility and the natural environment were changing for a great many people throughout the
world. Some issues were long term political debates that had been presented previously but not
received enough support for legislative change.

The children of the post war baby boom were reaching or nearing adulthood, Australia had a large
youth population and in typically ALP seats like Whitlam's own seat of Werriwa the youth
population was very high (6). The withdrawal of troops from Viet Nam and the end of conscription
were also issues that affected the youth of Australia.
Another legacy of the Whitlam Government is found in the support and improvements offered to
women. Soon after the Whitlam government came to power issues relating to rights and status of
women were either supported or addressed by the Government. This included the rights and requests
for equal pay for equal work, for maternity leave, amendments to the Public Services Act, grants for
family planning centres, more affordable availability of the contraceptive pill and a supporting
mothers pension for women who were the sole parent (7).
The anti–racist philosophy forwarded by the Whitlam Government marked a major change in the
ALP and the White Australian ideology. The Racial Discrimination Bill 1975 represented a major
achievement of the Whitlam Government that effected immigration, indigenous affairs and rights,
international politics and the beginning of the multiculturalism policy.
Two other of the major policy changes instigated by the Whitlam Government were the introduction
of free tertiary education and the introduction of free medical services under Medicare.

The Australian Media Is An Available And Reliable...
The Australian media is generally considered to be an available and reliable information source for
Australian society. The media therefore has a strong influence over the information of social and
individual opinions. Refugees are people who have been forced to leave their home because of war,
natural disasters or persecution. The media represents this 'category' of people using a narrow group
of information, presenting a particular skew of opinion, which is passed onto the individuals who
place trust in these sources. Through the media interpreting the typical Australian, generally not
showing the reality of immigrants it allows society to disregard refugees or asylum seekers as they
do not 'fit' this ideal Australian. This ideology of the Australian has caused a history of social
categorization and discrimination, often based in a racial or religious difference between the British
Australian settlers, and a variety of groups, including: the Indigenous community, Chinese gold rush
settlers, and Mediterranean immigrants. Recently, these social categorizations have been strongly
targeted toward those seeking asylum on Australia's shores. The rapid evolution of technology and
the media has caused dramatic changes in the way that society, and the individuals within it have
understood and approached these issues.
The media in its news form is considered to be a highly trusted source of information. This gives
them a huge influence over Australia's views over certain topics.

Mid–Century Modern
The term "Mid–Century Modern" is used to broadly describe a style of architecture and furniture
design that was prominent during the post–World War II years. Thought to have spanned roughly 30
years (approx. 1933 – 1965) it is often argued that the Mid–century modern period can be limited to
a period of 10 years, between 1947 and 1957. A reflection of the International Style and the Bauhaus
movement, Mid–Century architecture was typically used residentially in the hope of bringing
Modernism into the post–war suburbs.
Internationally, Frank Lloyd Wright was a prominent figure in mid–century modern architecture (as
was Mies van der Rohe, Walter Gropius and Le Corbusier)
Many experts credit Wright as the architect responsible for propagating the Mid–century modern
style throughout the western world
"Wright's Influence on subsequent generations of American architects has been profound"
(Volner, 2016)
The incredible work of these Modernist architects had a strong and distinct influence on up and

History of Australia
Australia has come a long way to where they are today since their journey began back in 1788, from
penal colony all the way to its own island continent. As time went on slowly, there began to be six
different settlements. All starting off with: Van Diemen's Land, Western Australia, South Australia,
Victoria, Queensland, and Northern Territory. With many changes, some have become states while
others have stayed territories. Even though this land was thought to be found by the Europeans, it
wasn't. Australia was first found by the Aborigines. They were thought to have come to Australia
about 50,000 years ago during the Ice Age. Then it all began, the gold rush ... Show more content on

Australia– The Land Down Under Australia is a continent filled with unique geography, culture, and

Australia, "Much of Australia is too hot and dry for most people to live. There are few Aboriginal
communities in Australia's desert–filled middle. But there is not enough water in the outback for
many homes or farms. Almost all Australians live in big cities close to the ocean." Despite
Australia's stereotypical outback, around eighty percent of Australia's citizens live in towns and

Australia 's Restrictive Immigration Control
Australia has arguably the most restrictive immigration control in the world and has very tough
policies in place for asylum seekers who arrive by boat. Under Australia 's system of mandatory
detention, all non–citizens who are in Australia without a valid visa must be detained, including
children. In 2012, offshore processing of asylum seekers commenced and detention centres in Nauru
and Manus Island (Papua New Guinea) were established. This new system enforced policies that
transferred asylum seekers who arrive by boat without a valid visa to a third country. Once the
processing of asylum seekers was completed, those found to be genuine refugees will be resettled in
Papua New Guinea or Cambodia, not Australia. The Abbott Government stated that no immigrant
who arrives in Australia by boat will be grated a visa, no matter the legitimacy of their claim. In
April 2016, the Manus Island detention centre was closed after the Supreme Court of Papua New
Guinea found it to be illegal. Current immigration Peter Dutton has made it clear that asylum
seekers on Manus Island are the responsibility of Papua New Guinea and would not come to
Australia. As well as the hundreds of immigrants in offshore detention centres, there are hundreds
more in community detention in Australia. There are currently over 26,800 visa applications from
those who are awaiting the outcome of their refugee application whilst living on a bridging visa in

Kenny (2006) is an Australian mock documentary about a blue collar Aussie bloke, attempting to
belong in social situations outside of Australia. But Kenny has taught me, that you can take an
individual out of Australia, but you can't take Australia out of an individual. The mock documentary
had greater success in America than Australia. The depiction of work–class Australian men, in the
film, showed the amount of pride Kenny takes in completing his dirty job well. Kenny's character
struggles to belong in his immediate setting, and seeks for his identity in the work that he

Kenny's stereotypical Aussie communication methods. Australian film and television deal with such
themes by accepting the reality of Australian contexts. The Australian demographic are known for

Personal Narrative: First Violin Of My Chamber Orchestra
My parents brought me on the journey of music even before my birth by immersing me in classical

I migrated from China to Australia when I was six. The different school system not only changed
my perspective about learning, which is the pursuit of interests rather than obtaining good grades,

Australia, being the only nation to run a whole continent and its remote lands, it is kept an
outstanding 23,745,411 people and growing to function. According to Wikipedia's "List of countries
and Dependencies by Area", Australia is 6th largest country without land borders and the largest
wholly in the southern hemisphere. It is said that this country is ranked as the 52nd most populous
country in the world. The first recognized landing in Australia by Europeans was in 1606 by a Dutch
navigator Willem Janszoon. Other twenty–nine Dutch navigators explored the western and southern

The children of the post war baby boom were reaching or nearing adulthood, Australia had a large youth population and in typically ALP seats like Whitlam's own seat of Werriwa the youth population was very high (6). The withdrawal of troops from Viet Nam and the end of conscription were also issues that affected the youth of Australia. Another legacy of the Whitlam Government is found in the support and improvements offered to women. Soon after the Whitlam government came to power issues relating to rights and status of women were either supported or addressed by the Government. This included the rights and requests for equal pay for equal work, for maternity leave, amendments to the Public Services Act, grants for family planning centres, more affordable availability of the contraceptive pill and a supporting mothers pension for women who were the sole parent (7). The anti–racist philosophy forwarded by the Whitlam Government marked a major change in the ALP and the White Australian ideology. The Racial Discrimination Bill 1975 represented a major achievement of the Whitlam Government that effected immigration, indigenous affairs and rights, international politics and the beginning of the multiculturalism policy. • 48. The Australian Media Is An Available And Reliable... The Australian media is generally considered to be an available and reliable information source for Australian society. The media therefore has a strong influence over the information of social and individual opinions. Refugees are people who have been forced to leave their home because of war, natural disasters or persecution. The media represents this 'category' of people using a narrow group of information, presenting a particular skew of opinion, which is passed onto the individuals who place trust in these sources. Through the media interpreting the typical Australian, generally not showing the reality of immigrants it allows society to disregard refugees or asylum seekers as they do not 'fit' this ideal Australian. This ideology of the Australian has caused a history of social categorization and discrimination, often based in a racial or religious difference between the British Australian settlers, and a variety of groups, including: the Indigenous community, Chinese gold rush settlers, and Mediterranean immigrants. Recently, these social categorizations have been strongly targeted toward those seeking asylum on Australia's shores. The rapid evolution of technology and the media has caused dramatic changes in the way that society, and the individuals within it have understood and approached these issues. The media in its news form is considered to be a highly trusted source of information. This gives them a huge influence over Australia's views over certain topics. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Thought to have spanned roughly 30 years (approx. 1933 – 1965) it is often argued that the Mid–century modern period can be limited to a period of 10 years, between 1947 and 1957. A reflection of the International Style and the Bauhaus movement, Mid–Century architecture was typically used residentially in the hope of bringing Modernism into the post–war suburbs. Internationally, Frank Lloyd Wright was a prominent figure in mid–century modern architecture (as was Mies van der Rohe, Walter Gropius and Le Corbusier) Many experts credit Wright as the architect responsible for propagating the Mid–century modern style throughout the western world "Wright's Influence on subsequent generations of American architects has been profound" (Volner, 2016) The incredible work of these Modernist architects had a strong and distinct influence on up and coming young Australian Architects during the 1950's – 1970's. As Peter Dodds McCormick proudly states in the Australian national anthem, "Our land abounds in nature's gifts of beauty rich and rare." Filled with its abundant native features, Australia is the world's sixth largest country. Australia is also the smallest continent and the largest island in the world. One aspect of Australia is its unique geography. The total population of Australia is estimated to be twenty–two million people. Ann Weil (2014, 7) points in her book Continents: Australia, "Much of Australia is too hot and dry for most people to live. There are few Aboriginal communities in Australia's desert–filled middle. But there is not enough water in the outback for many homes or farms. Almost all Australians live in big cities close to the ocean." Australia 's Restrictive Immigration Control Australia has arguably the most restrictive immigration control in the world and has very tough policies in place for asylum seekers who arrive by boat. Under Australia 's system of mandatory detention, all non–citizens who are in Australia without a valid visa must be detained, including children. In 2012, offshore processing of asylum seekers commenced and detention centres in Nauru and Manus Island (Papua New Guinea) were established. This new system enforced policies that transferred asylum seekers who arrive by boat without a valid visa to a third country. Once the processing of asylum seekers was completed, those found to be genuine refugees will be resettled in Papua New Guinea or Cambodia, not Australia. The Abbott Government stated that no immigrant who arrives in Australia by boat will be grated a visa, no matter the legitimacy of their claim. In April 2016, the Manus Island detention centre was closed after the Supreme Court of Papua New Guinea found it to be illegal. Current immigration Peter Dutton has made it clear that asylum seekers on Manus Island are the responsibility of Papua New Guinea and would not come to Australia. As well as the hundreds of immigrants in offshore detention centres, there are hundreds more in community detention in Australia. There are currently over 26,800 visa applications from those who are awaiting the outcome of their refugee application whilst living on a bridging visa in Australia. The depiction of work–class Australian men, in the film, showed the amount of pride Kenny takes in completing his dirty job well. Kenny's character struggles to belong in his immediate setting, and seeks for his identity in the work that he undertakes. His Australian identity is obvious in the mass use of colloquial language that displayed Kenny's stereotypical Aussie communication methods.
