Multiculturalism
One of the most original and iconic countries world wide, Australia is home to some of
the best universities in the world.
With a warm climate, over 50 000km of maritime coast and a reputaion of being one of
the friendliest countries in the world, itā€™s easy to see why Australia is one of the most popu-
lar destinations for international students.
Australia is a nation of inventors and is known for inventions in technology and
medicine such as WIFI, solar hot water, pacemaker, bionica ear, ultrasound scanner and
many more
Entrepreneurs and problem-solvers are welcomed in Australia; the education sys-
tem here celebrates ingenuity and rewards those who stand-out with new designs and
solutions for different problems.
For a nation of only 23 de million, Australia stands out when it comes to art ā€“ celeb-
rities such as Cate Blanchett, Baz Luhrmann, Hugh Jackman, Eric Bana, Naomi Watts,
Chris Hemsworth si Nicole Kidman, can call Australia ā€œhomeā€œ.
Australia is a nation of migrants, and this means each community learned to live to-
gether in harmony, and society as a whole benefits from the mix of tradition and customs.
This means that anybody can come to Australia from anywhere in the world and find
the food, the music, festivals and churches representative from their countries.

MELBOURNE
Cosmopolitan Sydney, with its beautiful port
and a relaxed life-style, is one of the most
beautiful cities in the world.
Sydney is the largest Australian city, the
nationā€™s economic powerhouse and Australiaā€™s
capital city in everything but the name. This city
vibrates with energy and offers everything some-
one could ask for from a destination: the most
beautiful port in the world crossed by an equally
amazing bridge (known as The Coathanger), the
famous Opera House, a pleasant climate, godly
beaches for surf, a multitude of restaurants and
bars that vibrate with nightlife.
Sydney is blessed with a soft climate, the
temperature rarely falls under 10 degrees C over
night, with an average of 25C in the summer and
over 300 sunny days a year. The winters are
rather cool then cold.
Despite the fact that itā€™s Continental Australiaā€™s small-
est state (aprox. the size of Great Britain), Victoria
has a lot to offer. Itā€™s a place of contrasts, beaches and
mountains, desert and forests, volcanic fields and huge
farms.
The city of Melbourne, Victoriaā€™s capital city, has been
inhabited ever since 1830 by Europeans. Melbourne
produces one of the most innovative arts, music, food,
fashion, shows, design and culture in Australia. ā€œMelbour-
niansā€, love to shop, eat and take part in countless shows
this city has to offer to their inhabitants.
The characteristic that defines Melbourne is its cultural
diversity. Approximately 40% of the cityā€™s population was
born overseas, originating in over 130 countries.
And letā€™s not forget about Melbourneā€™s coffee culture. If
you like coffee, this is the city where you want to be.
10
BRISBANE
PERTH
10
With a population of 2 million people and over
1100 people moving here every week, Bris-
bane is considered to be Australiaā€™s fastest developing
city in the last decade.
Brisbane is home to over 80 000 international stu-
dents from over 40 different countries. Their number
doubled in the last 4 years. Approximate 80% of them
chose Brisbane as their study destination in the state of
Queensland.
Temperature in the southern part of Queensland
rarely falls under 20C.
Brisbane has a reputation of being one of the most
progressive cities in Australia.
With a massive academic culture and an economy
based on knowledge, combined with one of the most
envied lifestyles, Brisbane is one of the cities interna-
tional students should put on top of their lists when it
comes to studying in Australia.
Have you ever heard the expression ā€œbigger
than Texasā€? Well, this one applies to Western
Australia. You could fit Texas in Western Australia
and still have room for New Zealand.
The state has 12 000kms of beach and more
animal and plant species than the whole world put
together.
The city of Perth, the capital city of Western Aus-
tralia, has a long and hot summer with temperatures
constantly over 30C, especially in January and Febru-
ary.
The predominant culture in Perth is an outdoor
one. It seems like more and more ā€œPerthiansā€ are
devoted to a hobby that involves an outdoor activity
such as swimming, surfing, fishing or sunbathing.
Perth has an important artistic community as well.

ADELAIDE
11
GOLD COAST
When the first colonists arrived here, they used
stone in their buildings. They wanted to build
a solid and respected city, a civilized and calm place
to a level no Australian city can reach. If you ask some-
one from another large Australian city what they know
about Adelaide, they will tell you that it is the city of
churches. These days it is more than that.
Adelaide has a Mediterranean climate with hot and
dry summers and cool winters. A vibrant population of
students assures you there is a lot you can do in this
city especially for those on a budget.
Adelaide is smaller than Sydney, Melbourne or Bris-
bane but offers the same lifestyle and quality educa-
tion ā€“ for a smaller cost.
Statistics show that cost of living in Sydney is 24%
higher than Adelaide, Melbourneā€™s cost of living is 21%
higher and Perthā€™s and Brisbaneā€™s cost of living is 9%
higher than Adelaide.
Famous Gold Coast has the best of Australia in
the smallest details. Gold Coast offers a large
selections of beaches, subtropical forests, theme parks,
nightlife, shopping and attractions in an extremely ac-
cessible destination.
Gold Coast is a unique city, and one of the best
places in the world for holiday and studies.
Large enough to satisfy the most demanding tastes
but small enough to insure the visitor of the smallest
details, Gold Coast is the ideal destination for studies,
entertainment and business.
From the iconic Surfers Paradise to the sophisticated
restaurants, a new experience awaits you at every cor-
ner in Gold Coast.

ENGLISH VET
HIGHER EDUCATION RESEARCH
If your level of English needs
to be improved before starting a
course or you want to study English
language for different reasons, an
English language course in a native
speaking country like Australia can
help.
Australia offers a variety of spe-
cialised English courses. You can
study these courses in any of Aus-
traliaā€™s largest cities or in a quieter,
more exotic places: Noosa, Gold
Coast, Sunshine Coast, Byron Bay,
etcā€¦
A relevant characteristic of the VET
(Vocational Education and Training)
courses is, they tend to focus more on
developing practical skills in a certain
occupation, while the Higher Educa-
tion courses focus more on theory and
professional development.
VET courses are different from the
Higher Education because they are
practical courses, with a shorter dura-
tion and a lower cost and offer a lower
qualification than Higher Education
courses (Bachelor degrees, Master
degrees, etcā€¦).
Undergraduate courses are
based in essence on theory and rep-
resent the first professional qualifica-
tion at an academic level. The typical
course that falls under this category
is the Bachelor degree with a dura-
tion of 3 or 4 years depending on the
major. It can also last for 2 years if
the fast-track option is used.
The typical courses that fall under
the Postgraduate category are the
Postgraduate courses.
Courses that fall in this category
are the Master or PhD courses that
have at least a third of the studies
based on research and no more than
one third of theory.
The typical courses for this catego-
ry are the Master (by Research) ā€“ dif-
ferent from the Mast (by Coursework)
ā€“ and the PhD or doctorate courses.
International students that study
these courses and their dependents
will receive full work rights for the du-
ration of their stay in Australia.
An Australian qualification can have a significant impact on your life,
adding new skills and knowledge that can boost your career or give
you a new direction in life. In a competitive job market, it is time to ob-
tain an advantage that a course in Australia can offer.

more than reciting few words in a

on critical thinking as well as individual and
group projects, all these inspired from real life
experience. This means that you wonā€™t only
learn English but how to use it everyday as
well.
Studying English in Australia will help you
accumulate life experience you canā€™t get it
at home. Precious skills such as problem-
solving, leadership and how to apply English
language in everyday life will stay with you for
the rest of your life.

Regardless of you wanting to get a job
on the job market or you want to make
a first step towards university, a vocational
qualification in Australia can lead you where
you want to get.
The Australia vocational sector (or VET) is
based on an industry and government part-
nership. Education institutions called Techni-
cal and Further Education (TAFE) or private
education institutions called RTO ā€“ Registered
Training Organization, offer VET qualifications
in Australia.
Many VET courses offer on-site train-
ing, which means you, wonā€™t learn only in the
classroom but obtain precious work experi-
ence in a real workplace.
In Australia, the quality of education is
guaranteed. As a matter of fact, international
studentā€™s safety and experience is protected
by law through ESOS ā€“ Education Services
for Overseas Students Act adopted in the year
2000.

Research courses in Australia refer to
those courses, which have more than
66% of study based on research. In this field
you can commonly find two programs: Master
(by Research) and PhD (Doctoral degree).
A research program in Australia will help you
develop certain transferable skills and a qualifi-
cation that will contribute to your success in any
field you chose.
A Master (by Research) qualification is
granted by a university to a student who
brought an original contribution to a field of
study in a 2 years full-time study. Usually, a no
more than 50 000 words thesis will be required
to show the research findings.
The qualification of Doctor is granted follow-
ing a substantial contribution to a field of study
in a 2 or 4 years of full-time research.
In both cases, Master (by Research) or PhD,
the programs include certain theoretical parts,
but the main activity is focused on Research.

ACCOMMODATION
There are a variety of accommodation options for international students in Australia, from
university campus accommodation to apartment rental or shared accommodation, where
students from different countries and cultures share the accommodation and split their living ex-
penses.
Finding the perfect accommodation is one of the biggest challenges for an international stu-
dents and finding one to fit your budget is even bigger.
Itā€™s a good idea to find a temporary accommodation before arriving in Australia. This will offer
you enough time to know places and search for a more permanent accommodation.
The college or university can help you or you can book your accommodation on www.yha.com
or www.hostels.com. Another great website is www.booking.com For last minute bookings or short
term accommodation, you can use www.getaroom.com.au or www.wotif.com but hotels in Austra-
liaā€™s larger cities are expensive charging a minimum of AUD$150 per night.
Australia offers a variety of accommodation options for students at a high standard and differ-
ent budgets. Campus rooms, hostels, Homestays, shared accommodation, all these ar popular.
For more information ask your agent or college or visit the following websites to get a glimpse
of what type of accommodation is available and their costs: www.domain.com.au or www.reales-
tate.com.au

ORGANIZE YOUR BUDGET
Studying at university level involves certain costs including living costs and tuition fees.
Some of them are fixed and others will vary, dependning on the program you choose and
your lifestyle.
Tuition fees
Tuition fees vary from one program to another. On top of the tuition fees, students have to
budget for the following:
Overseas Student Health Cover ā€“ OSHC
Students will need to organize the health insurance before arriving in Australia and before
applying for their student visa. The health insurance will need to be paid in advance for the entire
period of study. HELLO AUSSIE STUDENT SERVICES can assist you with this step. OSHC is
currently around AUD$380 per year for a single cover. If you bring your spouse as a dependent
on your student visa, you will have to get a couple cover and if you bring your kids as well, you
will have to pay for a Family cover.
Materials cost
Students will have to budget for the cost of books and study materials. These will cost around
AUD$400 per year.
Below you can find a table with the costs the Department of Immigration and Border Protection
recommends you to consider:
Expenses Per Person Amount in AUD
Travel Main Applicant Return Ticket
Dependents Return Ticket
Tuition Fees Main Applicant Course Fees
Children 5 - 18 years old AUD$8 000/year
Cost of Living Main Applicant AUD$18 610/year
Spouse AUD$6 515/year
First Child AUD$3 720/year
Next Children AUD$2 790/year

Australian student visa
It is essential to apply for a student visa before arriving in Australia. For detailed information
on how to apply for a student visa, contact the Department of Immigration and Border Pro-
tection (DIBP), browse DIBP official website or ask your educational consultant (HELLO AUSSIE
STUDENT SERVICES).
YOUR WORK RIGHTS ON STUDENT VISA
A person on a student visa can work in Australia up to 40 hours per every 2 weeks during
their studies and full-time in holidays. Every university has a specialized department who offers
free job search services to their students. If your spouse travels with you to Australia as a depen-
dent, he will have the right to work full-time if you study a Master degree and part-time in all other
cases.
YOUR FAMILY CAN TRAVEL WITH YOU TO AUSTRALIA
Your spouse can travel with you to Australia together with your children. If you have children
that have to go to school, you will have to pay their studies that will cost you around $8000 per
year for each child. Your OSHC will cover your family as well but you will have to purchase Family
Cover.

After-study options
38
Once beoming a fresh
graduate from an
Australian university, you will
probably ask yourself, what are
the options to stay longer in
Australia?
There are many options for
a person with an Australian
qualification. Here are some of
them:
ā€¢ Skilled Independent (Sub-
class 189)
ā€¢ Skilled Nominated (Sub-
class 190)
ā€¢ Temporary Work (Skilled)
Visa (Subclass 457)
What is Skilled Independent
(Subclass 189)?
Like all skilled visas, the
Skilled Independent
(189) visa is a points-based
application. You must be work-
ing in a job on the Skilled Oc-
cupation List (SOL) and then
meet requirements around
your age, English competence,
training and work experience.
The Skilled Independent (189)
visa does not require sponsor-
ship by a relative or state and
you can live and work in any
part of Australia.
Once you have activated
your 189 visa, you and your
family gain permanent resi-
dency in Australia. In summary,
this means:
* You and your partner to work
in any job on arrival
* You can study at an Austra-
lian school or university
* You receive subsidised
healthcare through Medicare
* You are on the pathway to
Australian citizenship
* You can sponsor others for
permanent residency
What is Skilled Nominated
(Subclass 190)?
Like all skilled visas, the
Skilled - Nominated
(190) visa is a points-based
application. You must be work-
ing in a job on the Consoli-
dated Skilled Occupation List
(CSOL) and then meet require-
ments around your age, Eng-
lish competence, training and
work experience.Ā
You must also be spon-
sored by a state or territo-
ry.Ā Each state has unique skill
shortages and thus occupa-
tions appear at different times
on different lists. Each state
varies in its specific require-
ments.Ā Some states require
applicants to have higher
English scores; others require
more work experience or
detailed evidence of the appli-
cantā€™s assets.Ā
Once you have activated
your 190 visa, you and your
family gain permanent resi-
dency in Australia. In summary,
this means:
* You and your partner to work
in any job on arrival
* You can study at an Austra-
lian school or university
* You receive subsidised
healthcare through Medicare
* You are on the pathway to
Australian citizenship
* You can sponsor others for
permanent residency
What is 457 visa?
The Temporary Work
(Skilled) visa allows
skilled workers to come to Aus-
tralia and work for an approved
business for up to four years.
An approved business can
sponsor someone for this visa
if they cannot find an Austra-
lian citizen or permanent resi-
dent to do the skilled work. The
nominated occupation must
be on the Consolidated Skilled
Occupation List (CSOL).
Employees are restricted to
working only for their Sponsor

  • 9. 9 SYDNEY 9 MELBOURNE Cosmopolitan Sydney, with its beautiful port and a relaxed life-style, is one of the most beautiful cities in the world. Sydney is the largest Australian city, the nationā€™s economic powerhouse and Australiaā€™s capital city in everything but the name. This city vibrates with energy and offers everything some- one could ask for from a destination: the most beautiful port in the world crossed by an equally amazing bridge (known as The Coathanger), the famous Opera House, a pleasant climate, godly beaches for surf, a multitude of restaurants and bars that vibrate with nightlife. Sydney is blessed with a soft climate, the temperature rarely falls under 10 degrees C over night, with an average of 25C in the summer and over 300 sunny days a year. The winters are rather cool then cold. Despite the fact that itā€™s Continental Australiaā€™s small- est state (aprox. the size of Great Britain), Victoria has a lot to offer. Itā€™s a place of contrasts, beaches and mountains, desert and forests, volcanic fields and huge farms. The city of Melbourne, Victoriaā€™s capital city, has been inhabited ever since 1830 by Europeans. Melbourne produces one of the most innovative arts, music, food, fashion, shows, design and culture in Australia. ā€œMelbour- niansā€, love to shop, eat and take part in countless shows this city has to offer to their inhabitants. The characteristic that defines Melbourne is its cultural diversity. Approximately 40% of the cityā€™s population was born overseas, originating in over 130 countries. And letā€™s not forget about Melbourneā€™s coffee culture. If you like coffee, this is the city where you want to be.
  • 10. 10 BRISBANE PERTH 10 With a population of 2 million people and over 1100 people moving here every week, Bris- bane is considered to be Australiaā€™s fastest developing city in the last decade. Brisbane is home to over 80 000 international stu- dents from over 40 different countries. Their number doubled in the last 4 years. Approximate 80% of them chose Brisbane as their study destination in the state of Queensland. Temperature in the southern part of Queensland rarely falls under 20C. Brisbane has a reputation of being one of the most progressive cities in Australia. With a massive academic culture and an economy based on knowledge, combined with one of the most envied lifestyles, Brisbane is one of the cities interna- tional students should put on top of their lists when it comes to studying in Australia. Have you ever heard the expression ā€œbigger than Texasā€? Well, this one applies to Western Australia. You could fit Texas in Western Australia and still have room for New Zealand. The state has 12 000kms of beach and more animal and plant species than the whole world put together. The city of Perth, the capital city of Western Aus- tralia, has a long and hot summer with temperatures constantly over 30C, especially in January and Febru- ary. The predominant culture in Perth is an outdoor one. It seems like more and more ā€œPerthiansā€ are devoted to a hobby that involves an outdoor activity such as swimming, surfing, fishing or sunbathing. Perth has an important artistic community as well.
  • 11. 11 ADELAIDE 11 GOLD COAST When the first colonists arrived here, they used stone in their buildings. They wanted to build a solid and respected city, a civilized and calm place to a level no Australian city can reach. If you ask some- one from another large Australian city what they know about Adelaide, they will tell you that it is the city of churches. These days it is more than that. Adelaide has a Mediterranean climate with hot and dry summers and cool winters. A vibrant population of students assures you there is a lot you can do in this city especially for those on a budget. Adelaide is smaller than Sydney, Melbourne or Bris- bane but offers the same lifestyle and quality educa- tion ā€“ for a smaller cost. Statistics show that cost of living in Sydney is 24% higher than Adelaide, Melbourneā€™s cost of living is 21% higher and Perthā€™s and Brisbaneā€™s cost of living is 9% higher than Adelaide. Famous Gold Coast has the best of Australia in the smallest details. Gold Coast offers a large selections of beaches, subtropical forests, theme parks, nightlife, shopping and attractions in an extremely ac- cessible destination. Gold Coast is a unique city, and one of the best places in the world for holiday and studies. Large enough to satisfy the most demanding tastes but small enough to insure the visitor of the smallest details, Gold Coast is the ideal destination for studies, entertainment and business. From the iconic Surfers Paradise to the sophisticated restaurants, a new experience awaits you at every cor- ner in Gold Coast.

  • 13. 13 13 Study options ENGLISH VET HIGHER EDUCATION RESEARCH If your level of English needs to be improved before starting a course or you want to study English language for different reasons, an English language course in a native speaking country like Australia can help. Australia offers a variety of spe- cialised English courses. You can study these courses in any of Aus- traliaā€™s largest cities or in a quieter, more exotic places: Noosa, Gold Coast, Sunshine Coast, Byron Bay, etcā€¦ A relevant characteristic of the VET (Vocational Education and Training) courses is, they tend to focus more on developing practical skills in a certain occupation, while the Higher Educa- tion courses focus more on theory and professional development. VET courses are different from the Higher Education because they are practical courses, with a shorter dura- tion and a lower cost and offer a lower qualification than Higher Education courses (Bachelor degrees, Master degrees, etcā€¦). Undergraduate courses are based in essence on theory and rep- resent the first professional qualifica- tion at an academic level. The typical course that falls under this category is the Bachelor degree with a dura- tion of 3 or 4 years depending on the major. It can also last for 2 years if the fast-track option is used. The typical courses that fall under the Postgraduate category are the Postgraduate courses. Courses that fall in this category are the Master or PhD courses that have at least a third of the studies based on research and no more than one third of theory. The typical courses for this catego- ry are the Master (by Research) ā€“ dif- ferent from the Mast (by Coursework) ā€“ and the PhD or doctorate courses. International students that study these courses and their dependents will receive full work rights for the du- ration of their stay in Australia. An Australian qualification can have a significant impact on your life, adding new skills and knowledge that can boost your career or give you a new direction in life. In a competitive job market, it is time to ob- tain an advantage that a course in Australia can offer.
