2. Introduction
The present unreal conditional is used to refer to
unreal, imaginary or impossible conditions and their
results.
In the If Clause the verb is shown in simple past tense
whereas in the Result Clause the auxiliary would be
used plus the verb in infinitive.
3. Unreal Conditional
If + verb (past) , Auxiliary + verb (infinitive)
Example:
• If I had time, I would help you.
• If I lived in palace , I would give parties all the time.
• Mary would move to Japan, if she spoke Japanese.
4. Questions
Wh + Auxiliary + Verb (Infinitive) + if + Verb (Simple
past) + ?
Example:
A: What would you do if you won the lottery?
B: I would buy a house.
A: Where would you live if you moved to the U.S.?
B: I would live in Seattle.
