Genre and Genre Film
Introduction to Film

Genre Theory is used in the categorization of films. Genres are dependent on various factors such as
story line, whom the director is, and what are the audience expectations In using genre theory we
create a short cut in how we describe films. Genres are categorized into and then sub categorized
depending on the story and plot. Fantasy is a genre described as, "Any film with obviously unreal,
magical, or impossible situations, characters, or settings, often overlapping with various other
genres, especially science fiction, but sometimes historical dramas." (Goodykoontz, 2014) Fantasy
is a genre that typically includes a crossover genre, sci–fi, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

Low key lighting and odd camera angles are used in this part of the film while Harry searches for
the Sorcerer's stone and battles Voldemort. There is a slight horror aspect to the following scenes as
Harry deals with the antagonist of the film, Voldemort. Horror is a genre that aims to create a sense
of fear, panic, and dread for the audience. These films are often unsettling and rely on scaring the
audience through a portrayal of their worst fears and nightmares. As we grow to love Harry and
realize his biggest fear is the man who killed his parents and also him, and then are forced to watch
him return this brings horror into the mix as a sub–genre.

Scarface: Film Genre Analysis
A genre is a category, and in film it is a way to describe the best fit of the direction a movie will
display. There are many subgenres within a genre that also help to give definition. Genres are used
to support a system of grouping instead of disarray by leaving others to decipher it themselves.
Scarface is a crime film that also has the sub–genre of gangster. Even though it does not dramatize a
social statement on a need for change, Scarface fits into the crime/gangster genre because it
distinctly characterizes the severe bloodshed and assaults that are customary in the world of
organized crime and demonstrates the calamity of the gangster lifestyle; however, oddly enough
with the way the murders occurred it also fits into the horror film genre as well. The crime genre is
about a crime that is being committed or was committed and may sometimes be an account of a
criminal's life. Scarface displays many criminal that can blow one's mind and is in many ways an
account of Montana's life as a drug lord. The film falls into the subgenre of crime, as a "gangster"
film for the simple fact that it portrays a criminal organization with a level of organization and
resources that ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
With Tony as a drug kingpin both he and his wife both became addicts of the drugs he sold. Mounds
of the white substance known as cocaine in almost every scene, Montana stayed sweating and had
difficulty concentrating from his overuse of the drug. There isn't a character in the film who did not
fall prey to "getting high." As stated by Goodykoontz and Jacobs gangster films "demonstrate the
destructiveness of a lifestyle in a way intended to discourage others from imitating it, although some
may not recognize that point if the characters are appealing" (2014) and that is what was done with
Scarface. One can see how detrimental Tony's drug use is to his empire causing paranoia, irritability,
restlessness, anxiety, and ultimately ending his

The Elements Of The Genre Of Speculative Fiction
Next to being neo–slave narratives, Kindred and Beloved, as well as Who Fears Death, are examples
of the genre of Speculative Fiction. This type of literature features supernatural and/or futuristic
elements. Is serves as an umbrella term and includes science fiction, fantasy, literary fiction,
supernatural fiction, horror, dystopia, utopia, (post–)apocalyptic and superhero elements, as well as
their combinations (Jackson and Moody–Freeman, 127). Hence, "in Speculative Fiction the action
of the story can take place in a culture that never existed, a world we know nothing of, or an earth
that might have been or might be" (Shade, 2). In other words, speculative literature includes all texts
that take place "in a universe slightly different from our own" (Wyatt, 1–2). Language is "not merely
descriptive but also functions as a form of word building" (Burnett, 137), as neologisms can be both
metaphorical and literal in this genre.
Speculative Fiction ranges back to ancient history and has been pervading humanity from the
beginning. Furby and Hines state that the human has always been a "story–telling ape" (Furby and
Hines, 10), as we get access to the world through the narrative. So–called taproot texts, the very first
fictional texts, such as The Epic of Gilgamesh, still form the basis for modern authors to draw ...

Still, until recently, it has not given much attention to issues of race and ethnicity in the context of
imagined futures. Historically, the focus of the genre has been on social and political commentary,
as well as responses to social, cultural and technological changes. Mainstream speculative fictional
novels explored "issues of empire, [rather than] blacks, women and other culturally diverse peoples
within their narratives" (Jackson and Moody–Freeman, 128). In other

The Film Genre In The Wizard Of Oz
Genres can be identified as westerns, gangster, horror, romantic comedy, musical, mystery, film noir,
fantasy, and science fiction that may also include numerous other sub–genres. Genre is the term
used to characterize groups of similar texts that share certain recognizable conventions and that
belong in the same literary tradition (Genre Theory, 2011). Genre films are normally easily
recognizable as part of a certain genre. The film Genre I will be focusing on is Fantasy. Any film
with unreal, magical, or impossible situations, characters, or settings, most often including sub
dramas, Such as, a fantasy romance, or a fantasy romantic comedy. Or a suspenseful fantasy film.

In one scene they use high–key lighting to show more of an exciting and fantasy scene to stimulate
the audience's sense of excitement in the film. However, in other parts of the film low–key lighting
can be seen. Like when Dorothy meets the wizard for the very first time. These scenes create a
scary, suspenseful feeling for the audience. Another scene where they use low–key lighting is at the
beginning of the film when Dorothy is taken by the tornado. They use this Tanique to draw in the
adiance and make them cringe at what is going to happen next. When it comes to high key–lighting
the scene where Dorothy starts her adventure on the yellow brick road is a great example. This part
of the film is exciting and happy and the high–key lighting compliments that clip very well. These
Techniques are very important in the film because each bring out a different type of emotion that the
author is trying to display. Throughout this film the author takes us on an emotion of roller coaster
from excited, too scared to sespense and then back to excitement. To gets these different emotions
lighting is key it makes for a greater sense of emtion for the adiance thus wanting them to watch

Unforgiven: The Western Genre
There are certain elements that a film has to have for us to consider it being a part of the western
genre. For example, when we think of a western we immediately picture an open landscape of
mountain ranges, rugged lands or vast plains. We see settlers building homesteads or small towns,
which often creates a main street where all the small business would be located including a jail and
some saloons. Also, I cannot forget about the famous bar and gunfight scenes that will get you to the
edge of your seat. The film Stagecoach is a perfect example of a typical western but the film
Unforgiven does have similar elements but I wouldn't say that it is a typical western; it seems to put
the conventions of a western into question.
In Stagecoach, we ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The role of the men that is skilled with a gun acts as a peacemaker and protector of the town.
Regardless if he is the sheriff or not, the role of a man that takes justice into his own hands and
punishes bad men is somewhat lost in Unforgiven. The idea of good guy versus bad guy aspect is
left to a person that is ambiguous and the traditional hero becomes more of an antihero. At the
beginning of the film, Clint Eastwood's character, William Munny, is presented as an anti–hero
because he does have a violent pass that involves the killing of women and children. The film shows
that he feels a little remorse for what he did in the past and just considers it as business. We can see
that Will goes through many character transformations like when he met his wife; they said he was a
cold hearted killer that turned into a righteous husband and a loving father. He gave up the life that
he had to create a life with her as an unsuccessful pig farmer because he believes that she saved him
from a life of evilness and he continues to live an honest life even after her death. However, when
Scoffield kid comes to convince Will to come out of retirement, he is very hesitant but then accepts
because he needed to earn some money to support his children. Unfortunately Will's

Genre Of Romantic Comedy
Genre theory is a short cut of how we define films. Genre theory is used to help simplify which
category a film is categorized. "A genre is a type or category of film that can be easily identified by
specific elements of its plot, setting, mise en scène, character types, or style. Genres are not stagnant
categories. The study of their evolution is nothing short of the study of film and the filmgoing public
itself. When we break down types of film into categories, we can then observe how they have
changed over the years to reflect the tastes of the audience while retaining the elements that put
them into the genre in the first place." (Goodykoontz & Jacobs, 2014) One specific genre and least
flexible, is romantic comedy, which is ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Juno goes to a clinic to have an abortion, but she cannot go through with it. Juno then finds a couple
in the penny saver of a newspaper looking to adopt a baby. Before going to meet the couple, Juno
tells her father and step–mother she is pregnant. Though they are not happy about Juno's situation,
they are very supportive and even goes with her to meet the couple. The couple is very nice and has
unfortunately tried adopting in the past, but the biological mothers changed their minds at the last
minute, so as you can imagine you can sense their hesitation at wanting to believe all will go well
with Juno, but they take the risk anyway and agree to a private adoption. While Juno manages her
pregnancy, she and Paulie begin to see less of each other. Juno is a sort of loaner who does not care
how anyone views her, but when she starts to miss Paulie she becomes more irritable and jealous.
She verbally attacks Paulie when he doesn't ask her to prom and instead asks a girl who Paulie says
he doesn't even like. Have a look at this scene to see the climatic blow out between Juno and Paulie:

marriage. Mark leaves Vanessa and arranges for a lawyer to represent them both

The Science Fiction Genre And Genre Essay
The science fiction film genre has been around almost as long as movies have, but like the cinema it
is still a fairly young art form. This genre came into existence shortly after the invention of the
movie camera in 1888 and has endured for over one–hundred years. Science fiction is adaptive; it
changes with the times and this trend can be seen in its incorporation of other genres, cultural
history and technology. This essay will attempt to define the genre, chronicle the history and
evolution, and explore its relation to technology. This is in general and in the cinema.
When discussing the science fiction film genre a problem occurs. The distinction between science
fiction and other genres is not always clear cut. Many movies span between the science fiction genre
and other genres. Movies such as The Ring (2002) or the Alien series (1979, 1986, 1992, 1997)
illustrate how the distinction between science fiction and horror films can be obscure. (Telotte 46)
Some comedies, such as Mars Attacks (1996) and Back to the Future (1985), are very much science
fiction. (Mitchell 133) In fact there is an example of a science fiction film fitting into almost any
genre. Starship Troopers (1997) parallels a war film and Outland (1981) resembles a western in
many respects. (Telotte 45)
The characteristics that define the science fiction genre can be difficult to pin down. A genre such as
the western has easily identifiable characteristics such as cowboys, guns, the wild west, and bad

Essay about Anzaldúa’s Genre Borderlands
Anzaldúa's Genre Borderlands
Gloria Anzaldúa writes of a Utopic frame of mind, the borderlands created in and lived in by the
new mestiza. She describes the preexisting natures of the Anglos, Mexicanos, and Chicanos as seen
around the southwest U.S. / Mexican border, indicative of the nations at large. She also probes the
borders of language, sexuality, psychology and spirituality. Anzaldúa presents this information in
various identifiable ways including the autobiography, historical/informative essay, and poetry.
What is unique to Anzaldúa is her ability to weave a 'perfect' kind of compromised state of mind that
melds together the preexisting cultures while simultaneously formulating a fusion of genres that
stretches previously ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Anzaldúa finds that combining the two distinct forms adds a new dimension that is necessary to
fully comprehend the history of a people.
Sexuality and spirituality thrives as other topics in which Anzaldua combines genres. In this instance
she combines history and autobiography. Again this gives a more humane look at history. However,
this use is more distinctly personal whereas the previous combination of history and poetry provided
a more universal personal approach. This talks about Anzaldúa's part in history. Anzaldúa writes,
"Being lesbian and raised Catholic, I was indoctrinated as straight, I made the choice to be queer
(for some it is genetically inherent)" (41). This line is found in a section dealing with homophobia
that resides heavily in the cultures she identifies with. While this phobia exists in the culture at large
and is recorded as such, Anzaldúa provides a personal account as an example.
In another way, language also provides this dynamic that Anzaldúa aims for. Anzaldúa takes the
separate Spanish and English languages and her own Chicana tongue and creates a book that makes
uses of both. Both languages are vital in some way. While the book is primarily written in English,
often titles, sentences, and poetry parts are in a Spanish that more than likely is not easily
translatable to those who are not bilingual. Language seems to best sum up the importance of her
borderlands in genre and life. Anzaldúa says,

Genre Of A Motivational Athlete Tweet
Genre can be defined in many different ways. The word genre is something that can be very
flexible; it's not something that is classified under a rigid definition. Genre is the way you separate
different things into different categories; it's how you classify items based on something that they
have in common. Also, there are many different digital artifacts that can be categorized into many
different genres; basically anything can be put into a genre; my digital artifact, which is a Kobe
Bryant tweet from 2014, can be categorized under the genre of a motivational athlete tweet. A
concise depiction about the tweet is Kobe saying that he wanted to thank the team that traded him
after they told him that they had no use for him on their team, and then he ended up winning five
championships with the Los Angeles Lakers and also go down as one of the best to ever play the
game of basketball. This tweet really stands out to me. It motivates me; just because someone says
that you can't do something doesn't mean that you can't do it, if you put your mind to it and put in
the work you can be as successful as you want. As stated before, this is a motivational athlete tweet,
which is meant to target the audience of either young athletes or people who need some sort of
motivation in their lives. Furthermore, this tweet's intended audience is most likely leaning towards
young aspiring athletes or people who just need some kind of motivation in their life. Kobe Bryant

Approaches to and Types of Genre
Genre is known to change discourse by the format the information is presented to the audience
(Varela, 2008). It is also a category of composition that is characterized by a particular style, form or
content as dictate by Webster Third Dictionary. However Trosborg (n.d) stated that for the past
decade, genre identification, classification and description have been scholarly concern. Certain
scholars dictate that genre is defined primarily around its basic external criteria such as journals and
newspaper discourse while other scholars stand on the opinion that genre can be classify by its
communicative purpose, linguistic content and form of role its play in the discourse made (Trosborg,
n.d).
One of the scholar Swales (1990) stand firmly that the defining criterion for genre is the socio–
rhetorical context, the categories defined by the community and communicative purpose. Therefore
there is certain approaches of a genre to be effetively delivered to the audience after taking into
account to what dictate an effective genre.
In this part of the essay, there will be discussion on how the commonly used approach of genre is
utilize for which purpose of discourse. They are, typography, oral, and iconography approach. All of
these approaches of genre usage will be discussed in detail in this section of the essay.

Kazuo Ishiguro Genre Analysis
The first question asked in the readings and discussions that we went through in class is what
exactly is the meaning of genre. To me personally, the word "genre is it describes either a novel,
film, video game or music by certain generic ideas or "rules" of what defines that specific genre.
Stories can be described through narrative forms, such as if the writing piece is either a short story, a
novel or even a poem or narration. Also, stories can even be characterized by either similar themes
or settings and/or if they follow a certain structure such as if a book is either defined as comedy or
drama.
Daniel Chandler explains perfectly in "An Introduction to Genre Theory" how genre is not always
straightforward in defining things such as stories ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
They also discuss certain books that they have written and how some people have complained that it
shouldn't be classified as a fantasy novel. Both explain how genres are now being mixed and that
sometimes, a book cannot be labeled by just one specific type of genre. I agree with some of Neil
Gaiman's statements, such as how he states that the subject of the book doesn't determine genre and
that genres only exist when there's an abundance of novels that fit that specific genre. I both partly
agree and disagree with Kazuo Ishiguro. I agree with how he believes that there are certain patterns
that are associated with the genre, however, many readers and writers take these specifications too
seriously, and believe that if you don't follow the certain "standards" of what makes a specific genre,
they believe that it is strange. However, I don't agree with Ishiguro when he states "Books are
serving the same function as certain brands of cars or jewelry, in just denoting social position. That
kind of motivation attaches itself to reading in a way that probably doesn't attach itself to film"
(Ishiguro 7). I believe that film can also motivate people the same way that books can motivate

including melodrama, comedy, and tragedy. Genre has occupied an important place in the study of
the cinema for over thirty years. One of the biggest genres that has been evolved over the years and
has many implications is melodrama. "As a theatrical genre, melodrama came into existence in the
late eighteenth century in France and Germany" (Neale Stephen, 184). In the following century
melodrama genre has spread and developed quick from France to Britain, America, and the rest of

Vertigo – Hitchcock Defying Genre
"...alternatively, a film can revise or reject the conventions associated with its genre" – Bordwell
Based on the French novel D'Entre les Morts by Pierre Boileau and Thomas Narcejac, Vertigo is
arguably one of Alfred Hitchcock's masterpieces and the "strangest, yet most hauntingly beautiful
film he had ever made" (Adair, 2002). At the time, its far–fetched plot drew a mixed response from
critics – Time magazine called the movie a "Hitchcock and bull story" – but today most agree that it
is one of the director's most deeply felt pictures. Vertigo very easily categorized into a specific genre

He finally settles down onto the couch, facing away from the toilet door, waiting. As the bathroom
door opens, he turns to his left, and we only see his left profile (Fig 1.), a mirror image to the first
time he set eyes on Madeleine in the restaurant – unsure, and this time, full of anticipation. We are
reminded of the green motif, by the neon light outside Judy's apartment. As Scottie turns around to
fully see the resurrected Madeleine, he slowly stands up and at this point the music starts to pick up,
leading us to the point at which he sees his beloved. The camera tracks into a close up of Scottie's
face, with the green light reflecting off his eye, he almost looks like he has tears in his eyes (Fig 2.).
Cut to Judy/ Madeleine stepping out of the toilet, it is Scottie's POV of Madeleine bathed in ghostly
green light. Similar to the scene in the cemetery where Madeleine was shot through a fog filter,
which gave her the green glow, Judy/ Madeleine now had green light superimposed around her
body, which gave her the appearance of a blurred, ghostly figure (Fig 3.). This reflected Madeleine
coming back from the dead, now a ghost, as green is usually used to represent ghost or spirits in
film. She then slips out of the blur and into focus, Hitchcock used this to indicate Scottie's come
back to reality, coming to his senses as he spots the locket in the next scene, realizing that Judy has
been tricking him all along (Truffaut, 1985).

The first one Tenga and Basset describe as the Terror Management Theory which details the factor
of death and the toll it takes into a human's psych and then there is the Moral Foundation Theory
which describes the moral options one must take in order to live (how far one is willing to go).
"Terror Management Theory posits that humans have developed elaborate psychological defenses to
mitigate the potentially overwhelming anxiety engendered by the terrifying awareness of personal
mortality. Attempts to suppress thoughts of death and to extend longevity are insufficient, but
cultural worldviews provide comfort by offering the perception of an orderly, meaningful world and
by defining the means through which individuals can literally or symbolically extend identity and
existence. Terror Management Theory seems particularly applicable to the behavior of the characters
in "The Walking Dead", who live with the relentless threat of impending death. The theory also
seems well suited for analyzing viewers' reactions to the series, given their emotional attachment to
and identification with its characters" (Tenga, Basset). In other words, the theory states that for the
audience to come to terms with death and the realization that they will eventually die, their sub–

Challenges of Genre for EFL Teachers
Challenges of Genre for EFL teachers
In teaching English as Foreign Language (EFL), teachers face a number of challenges when the
pedagogy is changed to EFL method. One of the questions is how can teachers know what genre the
students need to learn? This is because based on researches, genre are dependent on the discourse
community. Therefore, how to explain which genre to teach by school teacher to the students? So,
this has become a problem/challenge for EFL teachers to teach genre as researchers from New
Rhetoric Studies argue that genre cannot be taught. They point out that genres are so changeable and
so context–dependent that it makes no sense to teach them outside of that particular context. (Millar,
2011)
Moreover, a basic set of general school genre has been introduced to counter that teaching genre is
as important as other subject matter to the students where they can apply it in many ways. According
to (Hyland, 2003) narration, recounting, argumentation, report and description are included in these
school of genre. In this approach the claim "is that if students can control and produce a few
decontextualized 'genres' such as 'exposition', 'discussion', and 'historical recount', they can produce
texts in the genres of a culture" (Johns, 2008) Despite that, this type of approach may not teach
students enough about how to employ and adapt these patterns to different contexts. More
longitudinal studies will be needed to see if learning this core set of text patterns

Genre Theory In City Lights
Genre theory is used to facilitate the categorization of films. They are dependent on different factors
like a story line, the director and the expectations of the audience. This paper will focus on the
romantic comedy genre specifically City Lights (1931) to help viewers get a better perspective of
the film and to learn how this film expands boundaries of romantic comedies. "Light–hearted,
humorous story involving people in love, sometimes overlapping with subgenres such as screwball
comedy, teen drama, or gross–out comedy" (Goodykoontz & Jacobs, 2014 table 4.1)

two people together. There are many ways for this to happen, and many comedic obstacles to be

The rest is just window dressing. At its most basic, the romantic comedy plot involves a romance

exclusively toward female audiences." (Goodykoontz & Jacobs, 2014) Charlie Chaplin is a resilient

Definition Essay
Definition Essay – Genre
"Genre," in the most generic definition, takes the meaning "kind; sort; style" (OED). Prior to the
term's inception, the notion of genre in the study of media emerged in The Poetics, with Aristotle's
discussion of the mode or manner of imitation in poetry. Of this Aristotle writes, "the medium being
the same, and the objects [of imitation] the same, the poet may imitate by narration – in which case
he can either take another personality as Homer does, or speak in his own person, unchanged – or he
may present all his characters as living and moving before us" (Aristotle, 53). Here lies the
distinction between epic, lyric, and drama, a distinction based solely in convention, the usage of the
medium, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It is a French word imported directly into the English language, derived from the Latin "genus" (the
stem is gener–), itself derived from the Greek "genos" (OED). Having evolved separately, the Greek
word and the Greek idea converged. The Greek root–word, like its Latin relative, refers to a clan or
race of people, or to offspring (Liddell & Scott Lexicon). This sense of familial interconnectedness
is essential to genre theory. Frye writes:
It is clear that criticism cannot be a systematic study unless there is a quality in literature which
enables it to be so. We have to adopt the hypothesis, then, that just as there is an order of nature
behind the natural sciences, so literature is not a piled aggregate of "works," but an order of words
(Frye, 17).
In conceiving of literature as a unified "order of words," Frye requires a system of genres which will
encompass the entire medium, expressing each the entire state of literature at a given moment, all its
bloodlines.
One might extend this idea of kinship to objects within any given medium, as in literature each
novel bears a relation to other novels, or across several media, as a Western film may bear relation to
a similar comic–book or radio drama. From this first approach, it makes more sense to think about
genres in a medium or the genres of a medium, than to think of genre as a medium. Based on the
questions raised in Aristotle's discussion, one might assemble a definition of genre more

An essay on different genres including the Ghost genre and the Fantasy
& Adventure genre
I have chosen two completely different genres to base my essay on.
Firstly, I have the mysterious and gripping Ghost Genre; the books I have studied are "The Woman
in Black", "The Langoliers" and the spooky film, "The Others". The second genre is Fantasy &
Adventure. The book
I am studying is "Lirael", a recent book written by Australian author
Garth Nix. "The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of The Ring", directed by Peter Jackson is the
film that I am analysing.

In the ghost story film "The Others", an unnerving atmosphere is set straight away. It begins with
cheerful, but strange music, and then a woman is shown screaming, making you wonder what has
just occurred.
This is the perfect beginning for a novel under the ghost story genre.
Further on into the film, we learn that the children who live in the house are ultra–sensitive to any
bright light. This adds to the strangeness of the story, possibly scaring the viewer and making them
believe that the characters are quite strange.
The majority of all ghost stories are set in the winter months because the weather is bad and when it
is like this, bad things usually happen. The main character usually gets themselves into a spot of
bother due to either the torrential rain, snow or a storm. It is highly unlikely for a ghost story to be
set in sunny or cheerful surroundings. It is the dark, dismal and eerie atmosphere that adds to the
scariness.
In both "The Others" and Susan Hill's "The Woman in Black," death is a key factor in the story line.
Dying is always used because if somebody had not died, there would be no ghost to haunt the major
character in the novel. In "The Woman in Black", narrator and main character Arthur
Kipps is constantly haunted by the sound of a pony and trap being pulled under a marsh by
quicksand. He also hears the

Codes and Conventions of Genres Essay
Codes and Conventions of Genres
A genre is a particular type of commodity . It has characteristic features that are known to and
recognised by the audiences because the same formula is reproduced many times.
Genre is a French word meaning that refers to types or categories of media products. Soap operas,
situation comedies, police series, quiz shows and news programmes are just some of the genres to be
found in television. Genres are identified by the particular conventions they use which are
recognised through regular contact. Conventions are any elements which are repeated in such a way
that they become familiar, predictable and associated in their use with a particular genre. ... Show

Black or female newsreaders, for example, have been appearing more frequently in recent years
therefore representing equality in society. However if generic conventions are simply repeated over
and over the films made could be dull and too predictable. The filmmaker relies upon conventions
but also mixes them with his or her own version and ideas in order to produce a successfully
constructed form of genre.
Nearly all stories in any genre are about situations which are disrupted by a problem for e.g., a
peaceful village is wrecked by robbers and one of the children is taken hostage, the villages find try
to find ways of getting the child back the 'good guy' is used to help the narrative along and therefore
resolves the problem. The purpose of the story provides tension for the audience, as on the other
hand the audience wish the problem to be solved but on the other hand the audience want the story
to continue in order to maintain the pleasure. Narratives have to operate strategies for both moving
towards a solution and yet simultaneously putting it off by complaints.
Genres are popular because they deal with universal dilemmas and appeal to universal needs. For
example, the dilemmas could be the hero or heroine fighting to clear his or her name; good finally
overcoming evil. Genres are entertaining in their own ways

Catch 22 Genres
Genres are categorizations of any media based on established similarities in writing style and
conventions. Instead of a strict set of rules, works under genres typically follow a loose set of
guidelines. For example, movies under the horror genre typically employ suspense and mystery to
give viewers a sense of unease and discomfort. One example of a genre is superhero fiction, chosen
mainly because it is one of the most popular genres in movies today. Within this genre, the
protagonist or hero is often a superhuman, a person who wields one or more superpower; the
antagonist or villain also wields superpowers in order to provide conflict to the protagonist. Action
scenes between the hero and the villain or the hero and the villain's grunts are a key part of
superhero fiction. Another example of genres is science fiction which is chosen due to its wide
prevalence in literature. Writers of this genre typically speculate on more advanced technology such
as space travel and artificial intelligence wielded by either humans or some other sentient species
introduced by the writers. While this ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Genres are fluid: they often respond to changes within the world. For example, Joseph Heller's
satirical novel Catch–22 became popular as it reflected the growing opposition towards the Vietnam
War in the 1960s through its criticism of the military complex (BBC News, 2012). Because genres
are fluid, they frequently change to reflect the shifting expectations of readers or viewers. The
superhero genre, for instance, evolved from simple stories involving the triumph of good over evil
in its beginning to stories incorporating darker and grittier themes today. New genres also form to
meet the developing needs of consumers. For instance, satire developed as a means to draw attention
to faults within society and criticize established groups such as

The Subgenre Of The Genfield Genre
The thriller genre has undergone many changes and phases throughout the past, which is evident in
the changes within its subgenres, each of which has its own distinctions. Some subgenres of the
thriller genre include the detective thriller and the suspense thriller. Alfred Hitchcock revolutionized
the thriller genre during his lifetime. In fact, his work defined a whole subgenre of the thriller: the
suspense thriller. The thriller genre has evolved and developed over the history of film and has
changed throughout the postclassical and modernist periods. In the postclassical period, films would
focus more on developing the character of the protagonist rather than the antagonist. The backstory
and motives of the antagonist would not be a driving force in a film during that period. In the
postclassical period, the elements of good and evil in the films are usually very distinct as well with
little to no grey zone. However, as time passed, there was a transition from the postclassical period
to the modernist period which also brought about changes in some of the aspects of cinema. During
the modernist era, there was a greater emphasis on the antagonists of a film. Films would oftentimes
give antagonists some more attention and backstory than they did before. There was also not as clear
of a distinction between good and evil; there was oftentimes a grey zone which allows the audience
to feel empathy for the antagonist. This newfound focus on the antagonists can be seen in Murder

Musical Genres And The Musical Genre
Exploring how genre is constructed, negotiated, maintained and defined. Musical genres are agreed
by theorists to be very fluid categories. This hypothetical statement has been proven again and again
as time has passed. What was the same rock in 1980 is not close to what is rock today. Because
genre is always developing, the questions begin with who controls the reasoning behind genre.
Exploring the purpose of genre, this paper will identify how genre has been constructed and defined.
It will explore how promotors negotiate genre in order to maintain a consumer market. This
questioning gives answers to whether musical categorizing is defined primarily by sociological
definition or musical. Genre is constructed from ideas, contexts and assumptions about an artist.
Qirko argues that genre is is constructed sociologically as it "constantly undergoes revision as
producers and consumers select the roots that best reflect their needs at given time" ( Qirko, 2013).
Audiences authenticate music through their own criteria to form and establish group identities.
Because of this, Qirko identifies genre as an interpretation and translation of whatever the consumer
wants it to be. Frith's idea's of the construction of genre comes in relation to the record companie's
'fantasy consumer.' This idealization of a listener targeted directly by a genre assumes a
"manageable relationship between musical label and consumer(Frith, 1996). This means record

Deception, corruption of the seemingly incorruptible, treachery and murder are common place–with
dialogue usually being as abrasive to morality through its mode of address as the visual and thematic
conflict on screen. Meaning is created technically and characterised through a unique style of night
shooting, dark shadows, sharp lighting contrasts, askew camera angles, symbolic environments and
incoherent heavy flashbacked narratives. Iconography is a key part of this genre as it and its
reoccurring and recognisable symbols – such as the detective who operates on the edge of the law
(again a metaphoric blurring of the philosophical concept of good and evil) and sometimes even
actors associated with the genre itself, carry meaning from film to film. The narrational format of
this genre tends to, through the techniques of voice–over, subjective camera angles and similar
subjectiveness of actual storytelling convey an almost documentary style realism.
This realism gives the spectator a privileged if not deceiving access into the fictional mind of the
narrator. In the words of Robert Porfirio "It is almost if the narrator takes a perverse pleasure in

Within each of the films, the revenge narratives are both set around the female, as in 'The searchers',
Ethan and Martin aim to save the young girl Debbie, and in 'Unforgiven', Will, Ned and the

seen to predictable and formulaic as these two western films show how they both follow similar
structures and narratives.
The theorists Propp and Todorov have focused on the similarity in narrative across different genres.
They suggest that genres that are different from one another in terms of visual, verbal and musical
signifiers operate according to the same narrative structures. Propp puts forward the story functions
of hero, villain and donor etc, and Todorov puts forward the equilibrium narrative theory. These two
theorists therefore show, how genre could be seen to be predictable and formulaic, as both of their
theories can be applies to 'The Searchers' and 'Unforgiven', and they also believe they can be applied
to many other genres and films.

main hero within the film, Martin is the main helper throughout the film and Debbie is seen as the

Through the science fiction genre we are able to see what is wrong with the world. The genre shows

light to situations that need to be exposed. The truth lays in between the lines of the stories. The
science fiction stories answer questions about life and how we are living it and where those
decisions we make might lead us to. Examples come from many stories that lead to societies being
controlled and having no freedom to be individuals. Stories are set in futuristic time settings were

Brokeback Mountain and the Western Genre Essay
The film genre of the Western has long since proven to be more about the conflict and showdowns
that occur in the storyline. Usually the western genre incorporates traditional western motifs and
icons and adheres to those common plot structures of the genre, but Brokeback Mountain is different
from what is to be normally expected because it does not seem like a traditional and conventional
Western film at all. Brokeback Mountain has several different twists to it, like the more modern take

Brokeback Mountain, being the more homosexual romance–oriented Western that it is, subverts a
large number of the typical traditional elements of the Western film genre as a whole, this one
especially, by having another male be in the position of the love interest of the hero. Although this
subversion in particular is very problematic for Jack, as it puts him in the shoes of being associated
with all things relating to femininity in the relationship. For example, Jack is the one who makes the
first move when seducing Ennis, using his own allure and sexuality into tempting Ennis when he
calls him into the tent, leading Ennis down somewhat of a risky path. Ennis, however, is portrayed
as somewhat of a saint, his being repressed and restrained by social standards, saying to Jack, "You
may be a sinner but I ain't yet had the opportunity". Another interesting typical thing in the Western
genre that was altered was that instead of Indians being the villain, the enemy is that of a ignorant
and oppressive society–a society that would kill Ennis and Jack for being "different", Ennis says to
Jack, "this thing takes hold of us at the wrong place, wrong time and we're dead," which shows how

Tom Stoppard and the Crime-Writing Genre
Mankind has perpetually maintained a fascination with what constitutes a crime and enjoyed piecing
together the clues that authors of the crime genre provide us in solving their mysteries, thus
appealing to our curiosity in the darker side of our humanity. The crime–writing genre embodies
humankind in its fullest, revealing our potential for both good and evil, a notion that is responsible
for the genre's cross–contextual survival and universal appeal. It is due to this undying interest that
writers of crime texts have the ability to subvert conventions and thereby deconstruct the
philosophical and psychological assumptions that crime fiction is constructed upon. By subverting
the conventions of the crime–writing genre, composers are able to more freely explore issues
concerning their respective contexts, a significant factor that has contributed to the genre's
endurance. Tom Stoppard's play 'The Real Inspector Hound' is a post–modern text which utilises its
absurdist nature to reflect the nihilistic philosophy of crime. The text simultaneously adheres to and
discards the conventions of the crime genre through its employment of parody and its satirical
characteristics.
Tom Stoppard's 'The Real Inspector Hound', first performed in 1968, is a one act play and dual satire
of Agatha Christie's conventional Golden Age, 'cosy' locked room mystery 'The Mousetrap' and the

Genre Theory Paper
Genre theory is used in the study of films in order to categorize films. Genre are dependent on
different factors such as who the director is, story line, and audience expectations (Azia, n.d).
Genres are types or categories and genre films that are usually recognizable as part of a certain
genre (Goodykoontz, B., & Jacobs, 2014, section 4.1). To better understand genre there are several
examples to look at. When watching a fantasy film we know that within the movie we will expect to
see unreal, magical, or impossible situations, characters or settings often overlapping with various
other genres (GoodyKoontz, 2014). In musical films you will see that the film mainly focuses on

Instead of strictly dialogue, the narrative may from time to time be advanced by characters breaking
into song. Numerous subgenres exist within the musical genre from musical comedy to musical
drama to animated musicals to musical documentaries and concert films" (Goodykoontz, B., &
Jacobs, 2014, section 4.4). A scene that helps classify Snow White and the Seven dwarfs into the
animated musical genre is the scene where all the dwarfs are working hard at the jewelry mine and
once work gets over they walk home in a single line singing the song heigh–ho heigh–ho its home
from work we go as they dance and skip on their walk home from work. Another scene that
illustrates a musical/fantasy genre is the scene where Snow White discovers the dwarf's cabin and
with help from the animals of the forest she starts to clean the house while singing whistle while you

central to the fantasy genre and fantasy stories often involve journeys and quests like the wicked

The View and Interpretation of the Term Genre
Discuss what we understand by the term 'genre' and how it relates to the way we view and interpret
films
The way in which we, as an audience, view and interpret films can be seen to relate directly to our
understanding of 'genre'. However, what is genre? Drawing on the knowledge of key theorists and
critics such as Steve Neale and Barry Langford this essay will first attempt to define genre and our
understanding of it before focusing on how genre relates to the audiences view and interpretation of
films. It will also touch upon the historical contexts of genre, and how genre helps the film industry
create films and their interpretation of film. An interpretation that differs in a number of ways to that
of an audience's due to their goals being different thanks to the ways they view film. Before we can
begin to delve into how genre relates to the way we as an audience view and interpret films, we
must first attempt to define and understand what the term genre means when relating it to the film
industry, in particular Hollywood.
Genre is a simple French word meaning 'type' and therefore when taking this simple, direct
approach we can see genre as a type of film or films such as a 'comedy', which has the association,
in many cases, with humour. However, this approach generates large conflicting ideals within 'set
genres'. It provides the understanding that genre has fixed boundaries that cannot be pushed to allow
for flexibility in a films direction. An example of this can

The Genre Of Horror Films
First of all, genre is the method categorized a film based on similarities in the narrative elements.
There are a wide range of different types of film genres: detective, action, adventure, gangster or
crime, science fiction, drama, horror, romance, comedy, musical and so on. It is quite difficult to
identify a particular film because a film might have a few of different genres. That is the reason why
sub–genres exist. Sub–genres can help us to more clarity in identify the genre of a film. For
example, a horror film might involve supernatural.thriller, mystery or others. Horror is a classical
genre that has now become far more popular with audiences than perhaps at any other time in its
history. This genre has been around since 1890s and it is one of the oldest genres from Hollywood.
The iconic theme across horror films is usually revolved around mirror, superhuman killer, curse
and so on. The ending will always like return to normalcy and victory over the monstrous. I believe
that this is the ending which most audiences wish to be. There are a few of sub–genres in horror
films which are slasher flicks, supernatural and psychological and they are widely adapted in hybrid
films nowadays. Slasher flicks as known as massacre is a type of horror film that usually involves
murders killing the victims in a violent manner and usually with a tool like knife, axe or others. For

Genre Theory

  • 1. Genre Theory Genre and Genre Film Introduction to Film Rachel Kamrowski Instructor Day 5/2/2016 Genre Theory is used in the categorization of films. Genres are dependent on various factors such as story line, whom the director is, and what are the audience expectations In using genre theory we create a short cut in how we describe films. Genres are categorized into and then sub categorized depending on the story and plot. Fantasy is a genre described as, "Any film with obviously unreal, magical, or impossible situations, characters, or settings, often overlapping with various other genres, especially science fiction, but sometimes historical dramas." (Goodykoontz, 2014) Fantasy is a genre that typically includes a crossover genre, sci–fi, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Low key lighting and odd camera angles are used in this part of the film while Harry searches for the Sorcerer's stone and battles Voldemort. There is a slight horror aspect to the following scenes as Harry deals with the antagonist of the film, Voldemort. Horror is a genre that aims to create a sense of fear, panic, and dread for the audience. These films are often unsettling and rely on scaring the audience through a portrayal of their worst fears and nightmares. As we grow to love Harry and realize his biggest fear is the man who killed his parents and also him, and then are forced to watch him return this brings horror into the mix as a sub–genre. • 3. Scarface: Film Genre Analysis A genre is a category, and in film it is a way to describe the best fit of the direction a movie will display. There are many subgenres within a genre that also help to give definition. Genres are used to support a system of grouping instead of disarray by leaving others to decipher it themselves. Scarface is a crime film that also has the sub–genre of gangster. Even though it does not dramatize a social statement on a need for change, Scarface fits into the crime/gangster genre because it distinctly characterizes the severe bloodshed and assaults that are customary in the world of organized crime and demonstrates the calamity of the gangster lifestyle; however, oddly enough with the way the murders occurred it also fits into the horror film genre as well. The crime genre is about a crime that is being committed or was committed and may sometimes be an account of a criminal's life. Scarface displays many criminal that can blow one's mind and is in many ways an account of Montana's life as a drug lord. The film falls into the subgenre of crime, as a "gangster" film for the simple fact that it portrays a criminal organization with a level of organization and resources that ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... With Tony as a drug kingpin both he and his wife both became addicts of the drugs he sold. Mounds of the white substance known as cocaine in almost every scene, Montana stayed sweating and had difficulty concentrating from his overuse of the drug. There isn't a character in the film who did not fall prey to "getting high." As stated by Goodykoontz and Jacobs gangster films "demonstrate the destructiveness of a lifestyle in a way intended to discourage others from imitating it, although some may not recognize that point if the characters are appealing" (2014) and that is what was done with Scarface. One can see how detrimental Tony's drug use is to his empire causing paranoia, irritability, restlessness, anxiety, and ultimately ending his ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 5. The Elements Of The Genre Of Speculative Fiction Next to being neo–slave narratives, Kindred and Beloved, as well as Who Fears Death, are examples of the genre of Speculative Fiction. This type of literature features supernatural and/or futuristic elements. Is serves as an umbrella term and includes science fiction, fantasy, literary fiction, supernatural fiction, horror, dystopia, utopia, (post–)apocalyptic and superhero elements, as well as their combinations (Jackson and Moody–Freeman, 127). Hence, "in Speculative Fiction the action of the story can take place in a culture that never existed, a world we know nothing of, or an earth that might have been or might be" (Shade, 2). In other words, speculative literature includes all texts that take place "in a universe slightly different from our own" (Wyatt, 1–2). Language is "not merely descriptive but also functions as a form of word building" (Burnett, 137), as neologisms can be both metaphorical and literal in this genre. Speculative Fiction ranges back to ancient history and has been pervading humanity from the beginning. Furby and Hines state that the human has always been a "story–telling ape" (Furby and Hines, 10), as we get access to the world through the narrative. So–called taproot texts, the very first fictional texts, such as The Epic of Gilgamesh, still form the basis for modern authors to draw ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Still, until recently, it has not given much attention to issues of race and ethnicity in the context of imagined futures. Historically, the focus of the genre has been on social and political commentary, as well as responses to social, cultural and technological changes. Mainstream speculative fictional novels explored "issues of empire, [rather than] blacks, women and other culturally diverse peoples within their narratives" (Jackson and Moody–Freeman, 128). • 7. The Film Genre In The Wizard Of Oz Genres can be identified as westerns, gangster, horror, romantic comedy, musical, mystery, film noir, fantasy, and science fiction that may also include numerous other sub–genres. Genre is the term used to characterize groups of similar texts that share certain recognizable conventions and that belong in the same literary tradition (Genre Theory, 2011). Genre films are normally easily recognizable as part of a certain genre. The film Genre I will be focusing on is Fantasy. Any film with unreal, magical, or impossible situations, characters, or settings, most often including sub dramas, Such as, a fantasy romance, or a fantasy romantic comedy. Or a suspenseful fantasy film. Fantasy films are always breaking the limitations to the real world, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In one scene they use high–key lighting to show more of an exciting and fantasy scene to stimulate the audience's sense of excitement in the film. However, in other parts of the film low–key lighting can be seen. Like when Dorothy meets the wizard for the very first time. These scenes create a scary, suspenseful feeling for the audience. Another scene where they use low–key lighting is at the beginning of the film when Dorothy is taken by the tornado. They use this Tanique to draw in the adiance and make them cringe at what is going to happen next. When it comes to high key–lighting the scene where Dorothy starts her adventure on the yellow brick road is a great example. This part of the film is exciting and happy and the high–key lighting compliments that clip very well. These Techniques are very important in the film because each bring out a different type of emotion that the author is trying to display. Throughout this film the author takes us on an emotion of roller coaster from excited, too scared to sespense and then back to excitement. To gets these different emotions lighting is key it makes for a greater sense of emtion for the adiance thus wanting them to watch more and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 9. Unforgiven: The Western Genre There are certain elements that a film has to have for us to consider it being a part of the western genre. For example, when we think of a western we immediately picture an open landscape of mountain ranges, rugged lands or vast plains. We see settlers building homesteads or small towns, which often creates a main street where all the small business would be located including a jail and some saloons. Also, I cannot forget about the famous bar and gunfight scenes that will get you to the edge of your seat. The film Stagecoach is a perfect example of a typical western but the film Unforgiven does have similar elements but I wouldn't say that it is a typical western; it seems to put the conventions of a western into question. In Stagecoach, we ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The role of the men that is skilled with a gun acts as a peacemaker and protector of the town. Regardless if he is the sheriff or not, the role of a man that takes justice into his own hands and punishes bad men is somewhat lost in Unforgiven. The idea of good guy versus bad guy aspect is left to a person that is ambiguous and the traditional hero becomes more of an antihero. At the beginning of the film, Clint Eastwood's character, William Munny, is presented as an anti–hero because he does have a violent pass that involves the killing of women and children. The film shows that he feels a little remorse for what he did in the past and just considers it as business. We can see that Will goes through many character transformations like when he met his wife; they said he was a cold hearted killer that turned into a righteous husband and a loving father. He gave up the life that he had to create a life with her as an unsuccessful pig farmer because he believes that she saved him from a life of evilness and he continues to live an honest life even after her death. However, when Scoffield kid comes to convince Will to come out of retirement, he is very hesitant but then accepts because he needed to earn some money to support his children. • 11. Genre Of Romantic Comedy Genre theory is a short cut of how we define films. Genre theory is used to help simplify which category a film is categorized. "A genre is a type or category of film that can be easily identified by specific elements of its plot, setting, mise en scène, character types, or style. Genres are not stagnant categories. The study of their evolution is nothing short of the study of film and the filmgoing public itself. When we break down types of film into categories, we can then observe how they have changed over the years to reflect the tastes of the audience while retaining the elements that put them into the genre in the first place." (Goodykoontz & Jacobs, 2014) One specific genre and least flexible, is romantic comedy, which is ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Juno goes to a clinic to have an abortion, but she cannot go through with it. Juno then finds a couple in the penny saver of a newspaper looking to adopt a baby. Before going to meet the couple, Juno tells her father and step–mother she is pregnant. Though they are not happy about Juno's situation, they are very supportive and even goes with her to meet the couple. The couple is very nice and has unfortunately tried adopting in the past, but the biological mothers changed their minds at the last minute, so as you can imagine you can sense their hesitation at wanting to believe all will go well with Juno, but they take the risk anyway and agree to a private adoption. While Juno manages her pregnancy, she and Paulie begin to see less of each other. Juno is a sort of loaner who does not care how anyone views her, but when she starts to miss Paulie she becomes more irritable and jealous. She verbally attacks Paulie when he doesn't ask her to prom and instead asks a girl who Paulie says he doesn't even like. Have a look at this scene to see the climatic blow out between Juno and Paulie: (Movieclips, 2015) Then Juno learns that the adoptive couple, Mark and Vanessa, is talking about separating and getting a divorce because Mark isn't sure he is ready to be a father and he feels like their marriage isn't working out and they are no longer in love and he knows a baby will not fix their marriage. • 13. The Science Fiction Genre And Genre Essay The science fiction film genre has been around almost as long as movies have, but like the cinema it is still a fairly young art form. This genre came into existence shortly after the invention of the movie camera in 1888 and has endured for over one–hundred years. Science fiction is adaptive; it changes with the times and this trend can be seen in its incorporation of other genres, cultural history and technology. This essay will attempt to define the genre, chronicle the history and evolution, and explore its relation to technology. This is in general and in the cinema. When discussing the science fiction film genre a problem occurs. The distinction between science fiction and other genres is not always clear cut. Many movies span between the science fiction genre and other genres. Movies such as The Ring (2002) or the Alien series (1979, 1986, 1992, 1997) illustrate how the distinction between science fiction and horror films can be obscure. (Telotte 46) Some comedies, such as Mars Attacks (1996) and Back to the Future (1985), are very much science fiction. (Mitchell 133) In fact there is an example of a science fiction film fitting into almost any genre. Starship Troopers (1997) parallels a war film and Outland (1981) resembles a western in many respects. (Telotte 45) The characteristics that define the science fiction genre can be difficult to pin down. A genre such as the western has easily identifiable characteristics such as cowboys, guns, the wild west, and bad ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 15. Essay about Anzaldúa’s Genre Borderlands Anzaldúa's Genre Borderlands Gloria Anzaldúa writes of a Utopic frame of mind, the borderlands created in and lived in by the new mestiza. She describes the preexisting natures of the Anglos, Mexicanos, and Chicanos as seen around the southwest U.S. / Mexican border, indicative of the nations at large. She also probes the borders of language, sexuality, psychology and spirituality. Anzaldúa presents this information in various identifiable ways including the autobiography, historical/informative essay, and poetry. What is unique to Anzaldúa is her ability to weave a 'perfect' kind of compromised state of mind that melds together the preexisting cultures while simultaneously formulating a fusion of genres that stretches previously ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Anzaldúa finds that combining the two distinct forms adds a new dimension that is necessary to fully comprehend the history of a people. Sexuality and spirituality thrives as other topics in which Anzaldua combines genres. In this instance she combines history and autobiography. Again this gives a more humane look at history. However, this use is more distinctly personal whereas the previous combination of history and poetry provided a more universal personal approach. This talks about Anzaldúa's part in history. Anzaldúa writes, "Being lesbian and raised Catholic, I was indoctrinated as straight, I made the choice to be queer (for some it is genetically inherent)" (41). This line is found in a section dealing with homophobia that resides heavily in the cultures she identifies with. While this phobia exists in the culture at large and is recorded as such, Anzaldúa provides a personal account as an example. In another way, language also provides this dynamic that Anzaldúa aims for. Anzaldúa takes the separate Spanish and English languages and her own Chicana tongue and creates a book that makes uses of both. Both languages are vital in some way. While the book is primarily written in English, often titles, sentences, and poetry parts are in a Spanish that more than likely is not easily translatable to those who are not bilingual. Language seems to best sum up the importance of her borderlands in genre and life. Anzaldúa says, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The word genre is something that can be very flexible; it's not something that is classified under a rigid definition. Genre is the way you separate different things into different categories; it's how you classify items based on something that they have in common. Also, there are many different digital artifacts that can be categorized into many different genres; basically anything can be put into a genre; my digital artifact, which is a Kobe Bryant tweet from 2014, can be categorized under the genre of a motivational athlete tweet. A concise depiction about the tweet is Kobe saying that he wanted to thank the team that traded him after they told him that they had no use for him on their team, and then he ended up winning five championships with the Los Angeles Lakers and also go down as one of the best to ever play the game of basketball. This tweet really stands out to me. It motivates me; just because someone says that you can't do something doesn't mean that you can't do it, if you put your mind to it and put in the work you can be as successful as you want. As stated before, this is a motivational athlete tweet, which is meant to target the audience of either young athletes or people who need some sort of motivation in their lives. It is also a category of composition that is characterized by a particular style, form or content as dictate by Webster Third Dictionary. However Trosborg (n.d) stated that for the past decade, genre identification, classification and description have been scholarly concern. Certain scholars dictate that genre is defined primarily around its basic external criteria such as journals and newspaper discourse while other scholars stand on the opinion that genre can be classify by its communicative purpose, linguistic content and form of role its play in the discourse made (Trosborg, n.d). One of the scholar Swales (1990) stand firmly that the defining criterion for genre is the socio– rhetorical context, the categories defined by the community and communicative purpose. To me personally, the word "genre is it describes either a novel, film, video game or music by certain generic ideas or "rules" of what defines that specific genre. Stories can be described through narrative forms, such as if the writing piece is either a short story, a novel or even a poem or narration. Also, stories can even be characterized by either similar themes or settings and/or if they follow a certain structure such as if a book is either defined as comedy or drama. Both explain how genres are now being mixed and that sometimes, a book cannot be labeled by just one specific type of genre. I agree with some of Neil Gaiman's statements, such as how he states that the subject of the book doesn't determine genre and that genres only exist when there's an abundance of novels that fit that specific genre. I both partly agree and disagree with Kazuo Ishiguro. I agree with how he believes that there are certain patterns that are associated with the genre, however, many readers and writers take these specifications too seriously, and believe that if you don't follow the certain "standards" of what makes a specific genre, they believe that it is strange. However, I don't agree with Ishiguro when he states "Books are serving the same function as certain brands of cars or jewelry, in just denoting social position. That kind of motivation attaches itself to reading in a way that probably doesn't attach itself to film" (Ishiguro 7). Similar to the scene in the cemetery where Madeleine was shot through a fog filter, which gave her the green glow, Judy/ Madeleine now had green light superimposed around her body, which gave her the appearance of a blurred, ghostly figure (Fig 3.). This reflected Madeleine coming back from the dead, now a ghost, as green is usually used to represent ghost or spirits in film. Challenges of Genre for EFL Teachers Challenges of Genre for EFL teachers In teaching English as Foreign Language (EFL), teachers face a number of challenges when the pedagogy is changed to EFL method. One of the questions is how can teachers know what genre the students need to learn? This is because based on researches, genre are dependent on the discourse community. Therefore, how to explain which genre to teach by school teacher to the students? So, this has become a problem/challenge for EFL teachers to teach genre as researchers from New Rhetoric Studies argue that genre cannot be taught. They point out that genres are so changeable and so context–dependent that it makes no sense to teach them outside of that particular context. (Millar, 2011) Moreover, a basic set of general school genre has been introduced to counter that teaching genre is as important as other subject matter to the students where they can apply it in many ways. In this approach the claim "is that if students can control and produce a few decontextualized 'genres' such as 'exposition', 'discussion', and 'historical recount', they can produce texts in the genres of a culture" (Johns, 2008) Despite that, this type of approach may not teach students enough about how to employ and adapt these patterns to different contexts. Prior to the term's inception, the notion of genre in the study of media emerged in The Poetics, with Aristotle's discussion of the mode or manner of imitation in poetry. Of this Aristotle writes, "the medium being the same, and the objects [of imitation] the same, the poet may imitate by narration – in which case he can either take another personality as Homer does, or speak in his own person, unchanged – or he may present all his characters as living and moving before us" (Aristotle, 53). It is a French word imported directly into the English language, derived from the Latin "genus" (the stem is gener–), itself derived from the Greek "genos" (OED). Having evolved separately, the Greek word and the Greek idea converged. The Greek root–word, like its Latin relative, refers to a clan or race of people, or to offspring (Liddell & Scott Lexicon). This sense of familial interconnectedness is essential to genre theory. Frye writes: It is clear that criticism cannot be a systematic study unless there is a quality in literature which enables it to be so. We have to adopt the hypothesis, then, that just as there is an order of nature behind the natural sciences, so literature is not a piled aggregate of "works," but an order of words (Frye, 17). In conceiving of literature as a unified "order of words," Frye requires a system of genres which will encompass the entire medium, expressing each the entire state of literature at a given moment, all its bloodlines. One might extend this idea of kinship to objects within any given medium, as in literature each novel bears a relation to other novels, or across several media, as a Western film may bear relation to a similar comic–book or radio drama. From this first approach, it makes more sense to think about genres in a medium or the genres of a medium, than to think of genre as a medium. In the ghost story film "The Others", an unnerving atmosphere is set straight away. It begins with cheerful, but strange music, and then a woman is shown screaming, making you wonder what has just occurred. This is the perfect beginning for a novel under the ghost story genre. Further on into the film, we learn that the children who live in the house are ultra–sensitive to any bright light. This adds to the strangeness of the story, possibly scaring the viewer and making them believe that the characters are quite strange. The majority of all ghost stories are set in the winter months because the weather is bad and when it is like this, bad things usually happen. The main character usually gets themselves into a spot of bother due to either the torrential rain, snow or a storm. It is highly unlikely for a ghost story to be set in sunny or cheerful surroundings. It is the dark, dismal and eerie atmosphere that adds to the scariness. In both "The Others" and Susan Hill's "The Woman in Black," death is a key factor in the story line. Dying is always used because if somebody had not died, there would be no ghost to haunt the major character in the novel. Nearly all stories in any genre are about situations which are disrupted by a problem for e.g., a peaceful village is wrecked by robbers and one of the children is taken hostage, the villages find try to find ways of getting the child back the 'good guy' is used to help the narrative along and therefore resolves the problem. The purpose of the story provides tension for the audience, as on the other hand the audience wish the problem to be solved but on the other hand the audience want the story to continue in order to maintain the pleasure. Narratives have to operate strategies for both moving towards a solution and yet simultaneously putting it off by complaints. Instead of a strict set of rules, works under genres typically follow a loose set of guidelines. One example of a genre is superhero fiction, chosen mainly because it is one of the most popular genres in movies today. Within this genre, the protagonist or hero is often a superhuman, a person who wields one or more superpower; the antagonist or villain also wields superpowers in order to provide conflict to the protagonist. Action scenes between the hero and the villain or the hero and the villain's grunts are a key part of superhero fiction. In fact, his work defined a whole subgenre of the thriller: the suspense thriller. The thriller genre has evolved and developed over the history of film and has changed throughout the postclassical and modernist periods. In the postclassical period, films would focus more on developing the character of the protagonist rather than the antagonist. The backstory and motives of the antagonist would not be a driving force in a film during that period. In the postclassical period, the elements of good and evil in the films are usually very distinct as well with little to no grey zone. However, as time passed, there was a transition from the postclassical period to the modernist period which also brought about changes in some of the aspects of cinema. During the modernist era, there was a greater emphasis on the antagonists of a film. Films would oftentimes give antagonists some more attention and backstory than they did before. This hypothetical statement has been proven again and again as time has passed. What was the same rock in 1980 is not close to what is rock today. Because genre is always developing, the questions begin with who controls the reasoning behind genre. Exploring the purpose of genre, this paper will identify how genre has been constructed and defined. It will explore how promotors negotiate genre in order to maintain a consumer market. This questioning gives answers to whether musical categorizing is defined primarily by sociological definition or musical. Genre is constructed from ideas, contexts and assumptions about an artist. Qirko argues that genre is is constructed sociologically as it "constantly undergoes revision as producers and consumers select the roots that best reflect their needs at given time" ( Qirko, 2013). Audiences authenticate music through their own criteria to form and establish group identities. Because of this, Qirko identifies genre as an interpretation and translation of whatever the consumer wants it to be. Frith's idea's of the construction of genre comes in relation to the record companie's 'fantasy consumer.' Deception, corruption of the seemingly incorruptible, treachery and murder are common place–with dialogue usually being as abrasive to morality through its mode of address as the visual and thematic conflict on screen. Meaning is created technically and characterised through a unique style of night shooting, dark shadows, sharp lighting contrasts, askew camera angles, symbolic environments and incoherent heavy flashbacked narratives. Iconography is a key part of this genre as it and its reoccurring and recognisable symbols – such as the detective who operates on the edge of the law (again a metaphoric blurring of the philosophical concept of good and evil) and sometimes even actors associated with the genre itself, carry meaning from film to film. The narrational format of this genre tends to, through the techniques of voice–over, subjective camera angles and similar subjectiveness of actual storytelling convey an almost documentary style realism. This realism gives the spectator a privileged if not deceiving access into the fictional mind of the narrator. In the words of Robert Porfirio "It is almost if the narrator takes a perverse pleasure in ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 59. Genre Films' Predictability and Formulaicity Essay Genre Films' Predictability and Formulaicity This essay shall discuss whether 'Genre films are predictable and formulaic', looking at the Western genre, and using the example films of, 'The Searchers' and 'Unforgiven'. Genre is a fundamental means by which we communicate especially in storytelling. If looking at genre in terms of Thomas Shatz, he puts forward the theory of similarity and overlap. He adopts a thematic and ideological approach, which identifies only two genres; the genre of order and the genre of integration. In this case the Western would be categorised into the genre of order. This essay shall also look at how genre films change over time, due to changes in society, as characters ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Within each of the films, the revenge narratives are both set around the female, as in 'The searchers', Ethan and Martin aim to save the young girl Debbie, and in 'Unforgiven', Will, Ned and the Schofield Kid aim to get revenge for the female prostitutes, this therefore shows how genre could be seen to predictable and formulaic as these two western films show how they both follow similar structures and narratives. The theorists Propp and Todorov have focused on the similarity in narrative across different genres. They suggest that genres that are different from one another in terms of visual, verbal and musical signifiers operate according to the same narrative structures. Propp puts forward the story functions of hero, villain and donor etc, and Todorov puts forward the equilibrium narrative theory. These two theorists therefore show, how genre could be seen to be predictable and formulaic, as both of their theories can be applies to 'The Searchers' and 'Unforgiven', and they also believe they can be applied to many other genres and films. The characters within 'The Searchers' fit into Propps story function as it is shown that, Ethan is the main hero within the film, Martin is the main helper throughout the film and Debbie is seen as the princess who needs to be saved. • 61. Genre Exposed In The End Of Science Fiction Through the science fiction genre we are able to see what is wrong with the world. The genre shows us the truth about what is going on around us. Stories are inspired by the chaos around us. Shedding light to situations that need to be exposed. The truth lays in between the lines of the stories. The science fiction stories answer questions about life and how we are living it and where those decisions we make might lead us to. Examples come from many stories that lead to societies being controlled and having no freedom to be individuals. Stories are set in futuristic time settings were anything is possible. Thanks to those ideas, people out in the real world take those "fake" or "impossible" things that are written and turn them into reality. The science fiction genre is a stepping stone for all in life. We as a race gain so much by the words written in those books. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... For example romance and stories around love are all the same sappy story except the names and the place they might be. Other genres that have "been played out" are stories about heroes. • 63. Brokeback Mountain and the Western Genre Essay The film genre of the Western has long since proven to be more about the conflict and showdowns that occur in the storyline. Usually the western genre incorporates traditional western motifs and icons and adheres to those common plot structures of the genre, but Brokeback Mountain is different from what is to be normally expected because it does not seem like a traditional and conventional Western film at all. Brokeback Mountain has several different twists to it, like the more modern take on it – traditionally, characters in Western films were riding horses, but because Brokeback Mountain is a more modern movie, the two characters Jack and Ennis are seen traveling in cars and trucks most of the time. This alteration is very ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Brokeback Mountain, being the more homosexual romance–oriented Western that it is, subverts a large number of the typical traditional elements of the Western film genre as a whole, this one especially, by having another male be in the position of the love interest of the hero. Although this subversion in particular is very problematic for Jack, as it puts him in the shoes of being associated with all things relating to femininity in the relationship. For example, Jack is the one who makes the first move when seducing Ennis, using his own allure and sexuality into tempting Ennis when he calls him into the tent, leading Ennis down somewhat of a risky path. Ennis, however, is portrayed as somewhat of a saint, his being repressed and restrained by social standards, saying to Jack, "You may be a sinner but I ain't yet had the opportunity". Another interesting typical thing in the Western genre that was altered was that instead of Indians being the villain, the enemy is that of a ignorant and oppressive society–a society that would kill Ennis and Jack for being "different", Ennis says to Jack, "this thing takes hold of us at the wrong place, wrong time and we're dead," which shows how much they both worry about it–but the two cowboys still have to find some way to pull through and struggle to find their true selves in this society, but it is also that fear which causes the devastating events ... • 65. Tom Stoppard and the Crime-Writing Genre Mankind has perpetually maintained a fascination with what constitutes a crime and enjoyed piecing together the clues that authors of the crime genre provide us in solving their mysteries, thus appealing to our curiosity in the darker side of our humanity. The crime–writing genre embodies humankind in its fullest, revealing our potential for both good and evil, a notion that is responsible for the genre's cross–contextual survival and universal appeal. It is due to this undying interest that writers of crime texts have the ability to subvert conventions and thereby deconstruct the philosophical and psychological assumptions that crime fiction is constructed upon. By subverting the conventions of the crime–writing genre, composers are able to more freely explore issues concerning their respective contexts, a significant factor that has contributed to the genre's endurance. Tom Stoppard's play 'The Real Inspector Hound' is a post–modern text which utilises its absurdist nature to reflect the nihilistic philosophy of crime. The text simultaneously adheres to and discards the conventions of the crime genre through its employment of parody and its satirical characteristics. Tom Stoppard's 'The Real Inspector Hound', first performed in 1968, is a one act play and dual satire of Agatha Christie's conventional Golden Age, 'cosy' locked room mystery 'The Mousetrap' and the crime writing genre itself. • 71. Genre Theory Paper Genre theory is used in the study of films in order to categorize films. Genre are dependent on different factors such as who the director is, story line, and audience expectations (Azia, n.d). Genres are types or categories and genre films that are usually recognizable as part of a certain genre (Goodykoontz, B., & Jacobs, 2014, section 4.1). To better understand genre there are several examples to look at. When watching a fantasy film we know that within the movie we will expect to see unreal, magical, or impossible situations, characters or settings often overlapping with various other genres (GoodyKoontz, 2014). In musical films you will see that the film mainly focuses on songs. Genres also have subgenres which are sub categories of a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Instead of strictly dialogue, the narrative may from time to time be advanced by characters breaking into song. Numerous subgenres exist within the musical genre from musical comedy to musical drama to animated musicals to musical documentaries and concert films" (Goodykoontz, B., & Jacobs, 2014, section 4.4). A scene that helps classify Snow White and the Seven dwarfs into the animated musical genre is the scene where all the dwarfs are working hard at the jewelry mine and once work gets over they walk home in a single line singing the song heigh–ho heigh–ho its home from work we go as they dance and skip on their walk home from work. Another scene that illustrates a musical/fantasy genre is the scene where Snow White discovers the dwarf's cabin and with help from the animals of the forest she starts to clean the house while singing whistle while you work. I'm sure we would all love if our animals could help us with chores around the house but that will most likely never happen. This is a perfect example of a movie with fantasy genre. The fantasy genre has events that occur outside the ordinary laws that operate within the universe. Magic is central to the fantasy genre and fantasy stories often involve journeys and quests like the wicked queen on a quest to kill Snow White. There are three different ways that fantasy writers set up their worlds. Some films begin and end in a fantasy world, others start in the real world and a third type of fantasy is set in the real world but elements of magic intrude upon it (Dewan, ... • 75. The View and Interpretation of the Term Genre Discuss what we understand by the term 'genre' and how it relates to the way we view and interpret films The way in which we, as an audience, view and interpret films can be seen to relate directly to our understanding of 'genre'. However, what is genre? Drawing on the knowledge of key theorists and critics such as Steve Neale and Barry Langford this essay will first attempt to define genre and our understanding of it before focusing on how genre relates to the audiences view and interpretation of films. It will also touch upon the historical contexts of genre, and how genre helps the film industry create films and their interpretation of film. An interpretation that differs in a number of ways to that of an audience's due to their goals being different thanks to the ways they view film. Before we can begin to delve into how genre relates to the way we as an audience view and interpret films, we must first attempt to define and understand what the term genre means when relating it to the film industry, in particular Hollywood. Genre is a simple French word meaning 'type' and therefore when taking this simple, direct approach we can see genre as a type of film or films such as a 'comedy', which has the association, in many cases, with humour. However, this approach generates large conflicting ideals within 'set genres'. It provides the understanding that genre has fixed boundaries that cannot be pushed to allow for flexibility in a films direction. An example of this can ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 77. The Genre Of Horror Films First of all, genre is the method categorized a film based on similarities in the narrative elements. There are a wide range of different types of film genres: detective, action, adventure, gangster or crime, science fiction, drama, horror, romance, comedy, musical and so on. It is quite difficult to identify a particular film because a film might have a few of different genres. That is the reason why sub–genres exist. Sub–genres can help us to more clarity in identify the genre of a film. For example, a horror film might involve supernatural.thriller, mystery or others. Horror is a classical genre that has now become far more popular with audiences than perhaps at any other time in its history. This genre has been around since 1890s and it is one of the oldest genres from Hollywood. The iconic theme across horror films is usually revolved around mirror, superhuman killer, curse and so on. The ending will always like return to normalcy and victory over the monstrous. I believe that this is the ending which most audiences wish to be. There are a few of sub–genres in horror films which are slasher flicks, supernatural and psychological and they are widely adapted in hybrid films nowadays. Slasher flicks as known as massacre is a type of horror film that usually involves murders killing the victims in a violent manner and usually with a tool like knife, axe or others. For examples are serial killer and mass murder. For psychological sub–genre ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
