5. HOSPITAL CARE NURSES
Hospital care nurses provide care to many different types of
patients with varying illness & also providing care to patients that
are recovering from previous surgeries
A medical surgical nurse is also known as the Jack-of-all-trades in
hospital setting
Medical surgical nurse has specialized knowledge of many
different types of illnessess.
6. CARDIAC NURSE
Cardiac nurses work with both ill and well patients.
They may care for the patients in the hospital that who have just undergone
procedures on their hearts.
They also care for the patients who have suffered heart attacks and had open heart
surgery
Certification is available for cardiac nurses through American Nurses Credentialing
Centre (ANCC) and requires several years of experience to qualify.
7. PEDIATRIC NURSES
Pediatric nurses have specialized knowledge of childhood diseases and pediatric
medication dosing.
After several years of experience the pediatric nurse may choose to pursue
certification through the Pediatric Nursing Certification Board (PNCB)
These nurses care for both well & ill children and have specialized knowledge of
how children respond to illness
8. ICU NURSES
ICU or intensive care unit nurses work with the most ill patients that are
hospitalized.
These nurses work very independently with the lives of their patients in their hands
After many years of experience ,the ICU nurse may decide to pursue certification in
her field.This is done through American Association of Critical Care Nurses (AACCN)
and will give the ICU nurse the title CCRN
9. PSYCHIATRIC NURSE
Psychiatric nurse work with patients suffering from mental illnessess.
They may work with hospitalized patients or patients in recovery from substance
abuse or in outpatient clinical settings.
Psychiatric nurses may pursue certification after they have acquired some
experience.they must take and pass a certification test given by the American Nurses
Credentialling Center(ANCC) and must also pay a fee for the certification and
test.continuing education is required of these nurses after they have become
certified.
10. HOME HEALTH NURSES
Home health nurses care for patients in their homes, often they have been
discharged from the hospital.
These nurses may provide wound care, intravenous therapy, or administering
medication.
Certification for home health nurses is provided by the American Nurses
CredentiallingCentre(ANCC) and requires the nurses to have experience caring for
patients in their homes. Nurses must take and pass a certification test and must
also pay a fee for certification
11. HOSPICE NURSES
Hospice nurses work with the patients who are near death and their families.
Hospice nurses take care of both patients and their families,helping them to deal
with emotional and physical aspects of an impending death.
Hospice nurses may pursue certification through the Hospice and Palliative
Nurses Association(HPNA).These nurses must have some experience in their
speciality and must also pass a certification examination ,as pay a fee for
certification. ongoing continuing education is also required for continued
certification .
12. LABOR AND DELIVERY NURSES
Labor and delivery nurses help women during one of the most joyous times of life-
childbirth
These nurses help women to give birth and assist with the care of postpartum
women and her baby.
Nurses may certify as labor and delivery nurses through the Association of
Women”s health,Obstetrical and Neonatal Nurses (AWHONN)
Several years of experience is required before being eligible for certification
13. DIALYSIS NURSES
Dialysis nurse may help patients both inside and outside the hospital to acquire life-
saving dialysis treatment.
These nurses have specialized knowledge of the kidneys and dialysis equipment
and how best to utilize it. they are keenly aware of saftey and the procedures for
utilizing the machinary and are watchful for any problems that may arise
Dialysis nurses may pursue certification through the Nephrology Nursing
Certification Commission (NNCC),which shows their expertise I the field of dialysis.
14. EMERGENCY ROOM NURSES
These nurses may work with trauma victims, critically ill patients and children and
adults with many different types of illnesses and injuries.
Emergency nurses may seek certification through the Emergency Nurses
Association (ENA) after they have acquired knowledge about their field of
knowledge.
The test is very difficult since the nurse is required to have knowledge of many
different diseases and injuries.
Certification is maintained by repeated testing and continuing education
15. NEUROLOGICAL NURSES
Neurological nurses work with patients who have suffered strokes or other
neurological damage.
They have specialized knowledge of brain and neurological systems.
Neurological nurses may decide to pursue certification through the American
Association of Neuroscience.(AANA)
These nurses must have demonstrated their expertise in their field.
16. ONCOLOGY NURSES
Oncology nurses work with patients that have been diagnosed with cancer.
These nurses have specialized knowledge of the physiology of many type of cancer
and specialized training in providing chemotheraputic agents to patients.
After several years of experience,the oncology nurses may choose to pursue
certification.Certification is provided by the Oncology Nursing Certification
Corporation(ONCC) and requires several years f experience
17. SCHOOL NURSE
School nurses help take care of children in the school setting.
Nurses administered medication and help to care for ill children.
They provide care from pre schoolar to college.
School nurses may decide to become certified in school nursing through the
National Board of Certification for School Nurses (NBCSN).
School nurses must have a minimum of a bachelor”s degree to qualify for
certification,and must also have the experience and knowledge needed .
18. OPERATING ROOM NURSES
Operating room nurses work with patients who are undergoing a surgical
procedure.
These nurses may care for the patients who are preparing for surgery,recovering
from surgery or undergoing surgery.
Surgical nurses are often certified,usually seeking certification after several years of
employment in the field.
