Case Study Of The Maersk Group
Introduction:
For our current context, we are dealing logistics as limited to the warehousing, transport and integral
management part of the whole supply chain of an organization. In any small to big business,
logistics holds a crucial importance of cutting costs and avoiding waste of materials and the golden
time resource (Anon., 2012). In our earlier assignment, we mentioned five critical global changes
which are bring vital transform in the logistics functionalities of the enterprises. These changes were
analyzed for the current period scenario and the coming decade in the organizations regarding
Australian Context.
Increase of global sourcing
Increase of logistics outsourcing
Increase of fuel prices
Priority of GSCM
Increase in Transparency in Logistics Practices
The need was to choose a current enterprise which will be affected by these global changes and
what strategies are appointed to deal with these global logistics changes. We have chosen Maersk

Globalization Is The Act Of Physical, Political, Social...
Globalization is the act of physical, political, social and economic interaction of people across the
world leading to an integrated system that is synchronized through common understanding (Scholte,
2000). The main area of concern is across border trade where business resources are shared beyond
domestic markets to establish an interconnection with preferred foreign markets. There have been
three forces that have continually increased the globalization phenomenon. They include
transportation, technology and communication.
Transportation
Improvement in the transportation sector has been essential in enhancing globalization.

The double stacking capabilities introduced incurred minimal extra costs of long distance shipment.
The competitive capacity of rail transport was enhanced against the shipping industry. Road
transport also embraced the advancement in containerization through new trailer or hauler trucks.
Multiple containers could be latched onto one trailer and successfully delivered over long distances.
Therefore, transfer of commodities was based on economies of scale with guaranteed minimum
costs as compared to previous years. Due to standardized containerization, intermodal transportation
emerged to effectively maneuver geographical constraints for timely deliveries. In this new system,
integrated transport modes act in a specific sequence to ensure cargo is delivered door to door.
Multiple networks of distribution centers linked to terminals were designed to penetrate a big
portion of productive areas (Rodrigue, Comtois, & Slack, 2006). Customers no longer needed to
have defined routes of cargo movement. Instead, they only needed to worry about the time of
delivery and costs of shipment. The ability to enjoy faster transportation that was cheaper and
covered longer distances as compared to previous decades, encouraged movement of people and
goods through long distances. The ease and comfort in movement motivated the venture of investors
and ordinary people into previously

Characteristics Of Containerships
Containerships are a very popular mean of cargo transport at sea. In this project the main features
and design characteristics of containerships will be analyzed such as the size categories of
containerships, the different types of cargoes that they are transporting , the characteristics of
container gears and the speed that a container can develop. Also the major companies that own
containerships and their structure will be described. Containerships are large commercial ships that
are mostly traveling to oceans and their main purpose is to handle containers ,which are very big
iron boxes with length around 12 meters. Each containership depends on the lifting gear of the port
that makes easier the loading process and also save time for the ship to prepare for a voyage. In
order to have smooth, and squared holds , containerships are constructed with double hull(
Container Handbook, 2015). ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
One type of container vessels is the Small Feeder which is used for short transportations. The beam
of the small feeder is less than twenty three meters("Container ships",2015).Another type of
containership is the Feeder vessel which are bigger than 1000 teu and they are used for feeding very
large containerships. Their beam is counted from 23–30 meters. The next category of containerships
is the Panamax which contain ships that travel through the Panama canal. These vessels follow the
size policies set by Panama Canal Authority. A Panamax size is about 295 meters. The post
Panamax is the next type of containership with a capacity of 9600 teu and beam thirteen meters
bigger than Panamax. The Suezmax is another category of containership, named as Ultra Large
Containership carrying 1200 teu containers with max draught of sixteen to fourteen meters in order

The bulk of the trade is still controlled very well by one party. Consolidation abbreviated Although
many companies have flirted with the idea of consolidation, few major companies of top 7–10
performers have made any meaningful headway towards consolidation via mergers. Maritime
culture is heavily steeped in neoclassical model of economics, and the utilitarian ultra–capitalist
teachings of Ayn Rand and Milton Friedman. Basically it has become a null point for powerful
companies to work towards consolidation since they have natural business advantages already fixed
in place. APM Maersk When interpreting the figures it is key to remember that the top carrier of
goods is APM Maersk, holding 15–16% of the market. Lack of regulation and corporate governance
has been elemental to creating a managerial culture that is not in accordance with cost–share,
product differentiation, or business regulation/taxation. Proposed solutions abbreviated In order to
create a culture that will be more open to consolidation, small companies who have more stake to
gain than lose should form mergers in order to prove the validity of mergers. Introduction The

Global Issues Regarding The Container Shipping
Global issues pertaining to container shipping continue to grow over time. Issues concerning
hazards, empty containers, and containers lost at sea are among the most important issues
companies look to fix. With each one of these issues, more issues derive from each. Just a few of the
hazards include smuggling, theft, contraband, and terrorism. As for empty containers, this issue
continues to leave companies in a confusion as to how to manage it. Containers lost at sea are
creating a danger for the environment, other ships, and even different types of animal species.
Drug smuggling has always been an issue on land but Federal law–enforcement officials say

Cocaine smuggling in containers fell off the charts for a while, but now they are back on the rise.
NY Times comments that, "containers are the dream smuggling device. They enable traffickers to
move large quantities of drugs without jeopardizing expensive light planes, boats, trucks and crews.
Shipping fees are inconsequential compared to the tens of thousands of dollars demanded by
contraband pilots, and there is no need to coordinate air drops and sometimes multiple transfers to
boats and trucks."
The Customs Service is in charge of fighting cocaine smugglers, but they are also in charge of
keeping traffic moving smoothly through ports. The customs' officials say that they would like to
search more containers but it is a hard task to obtain without causing an extensive disruption.
Recently though, they have brought the National Guard into the picture. Even with their help
inspectors anticipate opening fewer than 3 percent of the more than 1 million containers expected
this year. Drug smuggling is not the only type of smuggling going on either. Human smuggling is on
the uprise. Human smuggling in containers seems to be most commonly found from China to U.S.
NBC news says, "Since Dec. 28, more than 130 illegal immigrants have been apprehended after
arriving at U.S. and Canadian ports inside shipping containers. U.S. officials say the

Containerisation
What is containerization and how did the innovative use of containers transform the distribution of
goods? "Containerisation is a method of distributing merchandise in a unitised form suitable for
transportation by rail, road, air, canal and sea." (Branch, 1996, p.194). The simple principle of the
container has undoubtedly made the global economy grow, and brought the world closer together
through ease of transportation (Wetherly & Otter, 2008, p.86–7). To be able to use one single sized
unit for the transportation of goods was the ultimate solution to transporting cargo, which was
becoming larger part of global trade, and helped put shipping into the modern age. In 1956,
Malcolm McLean used an innovative idea to transport 58 trailer ... Show more content on

This reduces the need for warehouse space, decreases the risk of obsolescence and improves stock
control (Hann, 2010). Faster transportation has transformed the distribution of goods in allowing a
greater selection of cargo to travel further than it was previously capable of. So what about the
costs? "The container made shipping cheap" (Levinson, 2006, p.10). Just after McLean's idea, it was
thought that the costs of shipping were 11 percent of the value of United States exports, and could
be as high as twenty–five percent. By contrast, shipping costs in comparison to product price have
fallen sharply. (Asteris, 2009). It is not just the use of containers and ships that is responsible for the
transportation costs, the larger normal routes, the increasing competition between the major
container ship operators, such as Maesrk and Evergreen, the investment in modernising crane
handling equipment and the logistics, have all had an impact. Before containerisation, businesses
thought of distribution as a series of processes, ships, trucks and trains. Somebody had to move
every box and pallet, and could easily consume half the cost of shipping. Levinson (2006) described
this as "breaking bulk". With goods waiting in warehouses ready to be moved onto the next stage,
transferring and delays made shipments slow and the delivery times erratic. The introduction of
containers meant that for the first time, cargo could be locked away when in storage. Whiskey was

The Global Sourcing Wire Harness Decision

Abstract
As Sheila Austin works out the decision to source from one of the two suppliers that have responded
to her request for quotes for a new wiring harness for Autolink, she is faced with a decision to go
with an international supplier in China, or from a local supplier. The initial look at the price quotes
would steer towards the international source, but the underlying fees and costs associated with the
international seller would make her think twice about accepting that deal. The in–depth analysis will

It defines the expenditures and also denotes the possibility of cost reductions from the supplier's
marketing representative. This, for simplicities sake, can be possibly noted as the better of the two.
The overall unit price $31.27, and with the tooling cost of $ 6,000 and 5,000 units delivered, the
initial cost would be $162,350 for the first delivery (see figure 1). The $6,000 being a onetime fee
for the re–tooling will only be charged during the first delivery, or may be spaced out over the
course of several installments. Regardless, the re–tooling fee is not factored into the cost per unit as
there is no length of time set for the contracting. With Original Wire being a local vendor, close
buyer–seller relations may result from a long–term contract with price reductions. Since Original
Wire claims it is 'hungry' for business, there is the possibility of some price negotiations as well.

Advantages And Disadvantages Of Packaging
ABSTRACT There have been different ways to package products for years. Having choices can
make it harder but understanding what you have and how it needs to be shipped can be beneficial.
For non–retail packages there are three types of shipping containers, plastic based, paper based, and
wood based. In this paper I will go over the advantages and disadvantages of paper–based container,
plastic based container and wood–based container. As well as, compare all three to each other.

Wooden crates are easy to prepare; whether from a set design or perhaps a customized design specs
by a customer.
Disadvantages
Unfortunately, there are some disadvantages of wood based crates for shipping. Wood needs to be
treated. The finished product when the crate is all put together is too heavy, requires lifting
equipment such as pallet jacks, forklifts or even cranes, they can even become a safety risk to
employees handling the crates because of splinters and concerns with handling to get inside. Wood
also sometimes has a smell to it that can be bad for the products that are inside. Wood has been used
for centuries for crafting. Wood–based shipping containers are used to gather, store, ship and protect
consumer goods.
Paper–based
As time changes, paper and paper–based packaging have become key components in today society.
Communication, food, and consumer products are just a few of the things that are improved upon
and more easily accessible as a result of paper and paper–based packaging (American Forest and
Paper Association, 2014).

Globalization Of Shipping Containers Essay
CHAPTER ONE INTRODUCTION Rationale of the Study Containerization is a system of freight
transport that transports trade goods from ports to ports. This system is based on a range of steel
intermodal containers (also "shipping containers").These containers are built to standardized
dimensions and can be loaded and unloaded, stacked, transported efficiently over long distances,
and transferred from one mode of transport to another. Thus, it provided an economic way to ship
90% of the world trade goods across the globe and as a result has benefited society in providing for
a truly open market to buy and sell goods. Cebu is home to national and international corporations
whose trading hub is centered in the international port (cargo ... Show more content on

Contractors find alternative ways of transforming them into buildings that will make an impact on
the public. By using their expertise, they would be able to transform these used containers into
something useful and beneficial. These containers would provide them the opportunity to acquire
more projects and earn profit and of course achieving a sustainable competitive advantage. Through
this, contractors are also able to add value to these containers that have once been unused.
Extending the life of these discarded materials and providing affordable infrastructures to the people
is a complete viable approach. Sturdy, convenient to transport and relatively cheap – these are some
of the factors that have made the conversion of shipping containers into modern living and working
spaces an ever growing trend in some other countries. However, little is only known about this
innovation in Cebu. The proponents of this research study the supply and demand of these shipping
containers. As end users create demand for the containers from the contractors as a finished
infrastructures, these contractors are also creating a demand of raw shipping containers from the
shipping companies. And yet there are more of these containers than what the people demanded,
making a huge gap between the abundant supply of shipping container and the demand for them.

Maritime Security Barriers
In the recent times, there have been several advancements in transportation. This has been
occasioned by the globalization trends. According to McNaught (2005), international maritime
security is a matter of critical concern in the global environment. Sea transport remains one of the
largest and most effective means of transport used between continents. This paper provides a
critique of the article "Improving the security of containers in port related supply chains" by Johan
Scholliers, Antti Permala, Sirra Toivonen, and Hannu Salmela.
The article has an implied research question that the authors intended to answer. The question is:
what are the technological options that can be used to enhance the integrity and security of
containers in port related supply chains? In this regard, the question is academically rigorous as it
examines a current issue in the global logistics and supply chains. According to Gunasekaran
(2012), there is a growing concern that terrorists can use containers to deliver weapons of mass
destruction to various destinations. Therefore, the authors focused on a study on possible ways to
solve the problem.
Research Questions and Hypothesis
The article consists of implied hypotheses or assumptions that the authors relied upon to perform the
study. One of the hypotheses is that technologies such as biometrics and radio frequency
identification (RFID) can be used to provide effective container assessment. The second hypothesis
is that application of

How Have Transport Improvements Helped Build a More...
In the 1700s, it would have taken 2 years to navigate round the globe. In the 1930s, it would have
taken only 8 days. In the 1990s, an increase in technology and transport have been able to lower this
time to only 31 hours. These transport improvements have been able to create a 'shrinking world,
which, in turn, creates a much more interconnected world.
One of the main 'flows' on transport, are goods (food, objects) that will be traded with other
countries. The main improvement that has taken place in recent times is the creation of the freight
transport, containerization. These containers can be loaded and unloaded, stacked, transported
efficiently over long distances, and transferred from one mode of transport to another–container ...

These TNCs bring about a more interconnected world by sourcing parts of their products from
around the world (with transport allowing them to transport it quickly). A Mini car has typically
around 6 countries that have contributed towards the making of the car. This method to cut costs,
figuratively and literally, unites the countries making them more interconnected as a whole. The
TNCs would never have been able to operate and exist had the quality and quantity of transport not
increased.
The improvements of transport in recent years have allowed the world to become much more
interconnected. However, some would argue that the improvement of transport is alienating
switched–off places. As transport is improved to popular destinations, the obscure places (the
amazon) seem to be fading away from notice. The interconnected world may just be consolidating
its links instead of expanding them which could lead one to the assumption that the improvement of
transport can only consolidate and for connection to be established in the first place, transport would
have to start from the beginning, establishing a link. This argument argues that improvement of
transport is having a more detrimental effect on the shrinking world rather than bettering it.
In conclusion, although there are a few arguments against the improvement of transport creating a
more interconnected world, we can

Logistics Of Container Liner Shipping
1. Introduction
Container liner shipping has become one of the most important transportation modes in international
trade. It is growingly penetrated into the share of many conventional shipping modes. Containerized
cargo has been the most dynamic cargo group. "About 60% of the value of goods transported by sea
is containerized cargo (Stopford 2009). In 2011, container shipping carried some 1.477 million tons
of 8,879 million tons of seaborne trade (Unctad 2011). In terms of TEU, world container traffic
grew from 13.5 m TEUs in 1980 to 152.1 m TEUs in 2011, on average 8.29 % per year (ISL 2011)."

Evolution of Intermodal Transportation
With the global market becoming more connected and competitive, the United States supply chain
needs to constantly evolve to survive. Advancing technology and E–Commerce allow customers to
order products from literally anywhere in the world, resulting in a sudden emergence of strong
global competition. To compete America needs to be able to provide the same goods faster and more
efficient that their competitors. However many improvements in every branch of the American
transportation supply chain including infrastructure and logistics need to be made in to achieve this.
One practice that is becoming more essential to compete in the growing global market is intermodal
freight transportation. Before the history and evolution of intermodal freight transportation can be
discussed it must first be defined. One article defines intermodal freight transportation as "the use of
two or more modes to move a shipment from origin to destination" (Dewitt and Clinger, n.d., p. 1).
A prime example of intermodal freight transportation in America is transfer of trailers and
containers from container ships to either trains or trucks. Goods are then typically transferred to
trucks for the final delivery door to door. Intermodal transport is not only trailer and container
traffic, but also bulk goods like grain, building products, and coal (Dewitt and Clinger, n.d.). In
North America intermodal freight transport benefits from the country's huge landmass which offers

Container Moving Freight : The Technology And Imaginative...
Intermodal Containers Moving Freight
The advancement in technology and imaginative techniques, the procedures and systems of how
cargo is moved and handled is streamlined. Prior to containerization, moving freight from one
location to another across the globe was a tedious practice and often took an extended amount of
time. Manufacturers would use various configurations with dissimilar sizes and weights which led
to additional time at each location being required to handle the different sized cargo. The use of
intermodal containers has changed the shipping industry allowing for multiple modes of
transportation to rapidly cross load the containers and mover the containers to the next destination.
Implementing the use intermodal ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
There were significant delays in cross loading cargo onto the ship, workers would have to stack like
packages, construct shipping pallets, and block and brace items in the hulls of the ships as well as
the decks. When a piece of cargo was too large or heavy it would require additional material
handling equipment to move the freight to the next transportation mode being either rail or road. At
the receiving port there was also a time delay due to the need to offload the cargo by individual
piece and separate in on the dock. Road and rail transportation were very effective, but encountered
similar delays and issues depending on the size and weight of the cargo. This resulted in a call for
change in the way freight is transported among all modes of transport. The Department of
Transportation Federal Highway Administration identified the need to implement change which is
topic in the Intermodal Surface Transportation Act of 1991 (ISTEA). Outlining what intermodal
transportation is "utilizing two or more 'suitable' modes, in combination, to form an integrated

Growing and Changing Technology Used for Port and Harbor Security
Introduction
The responsibility for port and harbor security in the United States is handled by the US Customs
and Border Protection and the Coast Guard. These departments are part of the Department of
Homeland Security. Port and Harbor Security is important because of vulnerabilities in various
industries such as container shipping which are vulnerable to terrorist attack. US ports are
considered to be a desirable target for attack because US ports handle 20 percent of Maritime trade
worldwide. The maritime system in the United States entails sea and river ports that are more than
300 which consist of more than 3,700 passengers and cargo terminals. Any form of attack on the
maritime system could potentially lead to loss of billions and bring about an adverse effect on the
global economy. It is due to this case that technology has been used to improve security in US ports
and harbors. This paper will focus on what forms of technology have been implemented and what
functions do they serve in reducing vulnerabilities in the US maritime system.
Technology trends in port and harbor security
Port security for US maritime security entails the inclusion of two key programs whose primary
objective is to protect against threats in containerized cargo . The programs include the Customs–
Trade Partnership against Terrorism (C–TPAT) and the Container Security Initiative (CSI) which are
tasked to identify containers of high

The Intermodal Shipping Container is a large steel box...
The Intermodal Shipping Container is a large steel box that was created to transport goods by train,
truck, or ship for around the last 50 years. The pioneer of this revolutionizing box goes is a man by
the name of Malcom McLean who began his transportation interest with his trucking company
(McLean Trucking) that he built into one of the nation's largest. From there, he developed the steel
container in 1956, which replaced the previous loading and unloading method known as the "Break
Bulk Method." The Break Bulk Method was a much less efficient method where all goods are
loaded individually using bags, boxes, drums, crates, or barrels instead of unified large containers.

Containers at half height are used to carry heavy, low volume products in order to not waste extra
air space in containers. Last but not least, the car carrier containers are made specifically to transport
different types of vehicles safely and efficiently. With many of these containers having distinct
differences, they all serve the same general purpose for transportation.
Container ships have completely redefined efficiency in terms of shipping quantity, speed, and
safety. Before the mainstream introduction of container ships in the 1950's, shipping by sea was
slow, not standardized, and very inefficient. Loading and unloading cargo required many long and
strenuous man–hours, and was generally not safe. After World War II, the concept of standardized
boxes for shipping was starting to grow, and on April 20, 1956 the SS Maxton shipped 58 truck–
trailer vans from New York to Houston. Their chassis were not connected, and the boxes were
loaded and unloaded from the ship by gantry crane–one of the most important pieces of machinery
in intermodal containerization. This is not the first example of containerization, but indeed the first
successful use of an intermodal structure. Almost immediately after, more cargo ships underwent
modifications for these shipping containers. (Board)
Businesses instantly realized the benefits, ports and ships were quickly modified for intermodal
container support. However, they were not immediately as standardized as was necessary

Transportation Is The Development Of Containerization And...
It is hard to imagine life in the 1950s. Many things have changed in every aspect of life, not
restricted to transportation. One area that is especially interesting related to transportation is the
development of containerization and the idea of intermodal transportation. The idea of using
containers to transport goods has been around since 1792, when the British and French used wooden
containers and transferred them between railcars and horse drawn buggies. Around 1953, Malcolm
McLean, a trucking businessman from North Carolina , began thinking about how he could better
transport his goods. McLean was concerned about the time it was taking to deliver goods and also
highway congestion. He was also worried that tucking would be overlooked ... Show more content

There was great deal of time wasted in every avenue of transportation by merely waiting, waiting
for ships to arrive and waiting for crews to load and unload.
Malcolm McLean knew that container shipping was the way to go and he spent his life focused on
the container shipping trade. He could see that it would be easier and more economical, by being
able to ship more at one time. Whereas McLean initially thought that driving a truck straight onto
the ship was the way to go, in 1955 he realized that he could make container shipping even more
economical by removing the container from the truck itself. By taking this action, he was able to
save a third of the space that was taken up by wheels and creating the ability to stack containers.
This motivated McLean to find ways to increase the container load on the ships.
On April 26, 1956, the first container shipment of 100 containers, aboard Ideal–X launched from
Newark, New Jersey and traveled to Houston, Texas. Ideal–X was originally a T–2, tanker ship. The
containers were placed above deck on the ship. During the period from April to December, 1956,
there were 44 container shipments, each carrying approximately 58 containers.
Malcolm McLean brought Keith Tantlinger, a renowned container expert, onboard to his company.
It was Tantlinger's job to increase the number of containers a

Next suggestion that we proposed to is inbuilt a good cargo and shipment tracking system. TASCO
should first understand what their goals are or mission to achieve, either low cost logistic service

Existing Canals in the World: The Panama Canal and The...
Introduction
Canals are human–made and completely subject to the sovereignty of the state in which they are
located. Canals are internal waters that have no right of innocent passage through canals. Typically,
there are only two canals in the world – Panama Canal and Suez Canal. Panama Canal opened on 15
August 1914 with a total length of 80.5km (50 miles). Panama Canal is the integral link for shipping
traffic from the Pacific and Atlantic Ocean in North U.S. (refer Fig. 1). Panama Canal consist a
system of locks to raise or lower the ships to a new level. When a ships goes through one of the
gates the water level decreases or increases depending on the level of the next lock. When the water
level is the same as the next lock then the gate opens (Mitchell, 2011) (refer Fig 2). This
combination successfully reduced the journey between east and west of US by 13,000 km (refer Fig
3) (Rodrigue et al., 2014). Thus, it is the main route from Europe to West of US and Pacific Ocean,
accommodating an estimated 5% of the world's total cargo volume (U.S. Department of
Transportation and Maritime Administration, 2013). There are about 1,200 ships passed through the
canal every day and more than 14,000 ships transit the canal, 70% of the containerized freight is
inbound or outbound from the U.S. East Coast annually (Knight, 2008).

The 10 Stages Of Production For Gap Inc. Jeans
Figure 1 demonstrates the 10 stages of production for Gap Inc. Jeans, from the raw material all the
way through to the consumer as an end product. The first stage is the supply chain for the
production of jeans is to source cotton. Gap has a sustainability and environmental issue when
sourcing cotton. Gap Inc. scored a 0.5 out of a scale of 0 to 19.5 on cotton ranking, conducted by
Rank a Brand. Which assessed "their cotton policy, sourcing and traceability based on publicly
available information". Besides the sustainability concern, gap has an environmental issue. Sourcing
unstainable cotton uses a tremendous amount of water, as "It takes more than 5,000 gallons of water
to make enough cotton for just a T–shirt and a pair of jeans". It is also unclear to the consumer in
which countries the cotton is sourced. As some countries like Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan tend to be
much more risk prone for child labor, during the cotton picking season. The second stage of the
production for GAP is the weaving of the fabric. Gap does not provide any public information on
which weaving mills they use or where these mills are located geographically. From a SEERS point
of view this is a responsibility issue. Because Gap should be able to release this information to the
public. So that the consumers can be assured that there are no social issues within the supply chain.

unload ships that came through the port, a profession that had existed unchanged for hundreds of
years. Officials' beliefs that containers were a passing fad, in combination with the lack of
investment and acreage required for the new technology, allowed the Port of San Francisco, and its
longshoremen, to fade into history, just as its neighbor, the Port of Oakland emerged as a
sophisticated leading container port. The migration of the maritime industry across the bay
dramatically altered and restructured the economies of both San Francisco and Oakland. Similarly,
their waterfronts were forever transformed.
After World War II, the US economy boomed, while the maritime industry did not. The merchant
fleet had been commandeered aby the government when the United States entered the war, and did
not return to private ownership until two years after it ended, in 1947. Coastline shipping stagnated
at prewar levels, while trucking grabbed the market share of domestic transportation. A cargo ship
typically would spend as much time in port being loaded and unloaded as in transit, and was
therefore unreasonably expensive. Despite this, there was relatively little competition for larger
American ship lines since foreign lines were barred from coastal and island service. However

Bill Sharpsteen's The Docks
It has been said that the Port of Los Angeles is a "massive heart, pumping what the country needs, or
wants, through this major rail artery, which separates into thousands of smaller vessels".(pg29) The
Docks by Bill Sharpsteen gives the reader an insider's look at how important the port is to the
United States. Throughout the book Bill interviews with people who work different areas of the port
and some that are connected upstream or downstream of the supply chain in some way. He explains
the history of the port and how jobs were created and how they evolved over the years. The people
who were interviewed explained a little bit of their background on why they work that specific job.
Along with the interviews given, Bill was able to ride along ... Show more content on

Today the Union has the power to shut down the port by striking or following the safety rules, and
not cutting any corners causing them to work slower. The Union call themselves the "loads of the
docks" meaning that they work for the port, but they are the ones who own it. (pg93)The
International Longshore and Warehouse Unison is the sole source of labor in West coast ports. Fink
Hall was where the Union members would meet every day to get their job assignments. There would
only be enough work for a certain amount of workers, so some would be without a job for that

A Short Note On Hutchison Port Holding ( Hph )
1.1. Stevedores– Hutchison Port Holding (HPH) Stevedores is a port terminal operator that
expanded into new markets to replicate their expertise in terminal operations and to diversify their
revenue geographically (Jean–Paul Rodrigue, 2010). The Hong Kong based Hutchison Port
Holdings is the worlds largest container operator, handling in 2014 more than 82 million TEU
(Twenty Foot Equivalent Units), a 6% growth rate in volume in comparison with 2013 (Linton
Nightingale, 2015). HPH has one of the most technology–intensive commercial operations in the
transport industry today, and this is one of the success factors. Currently HPH operates 52 ports in
26 countries (Hutchison Port Holding, 2015). It is of vital importance that company is investing in
port modarnisation, for example is the Barcelona Europe South Terminal (BEST). HPH strengthens
its relationship with Barcelona, making an investment of 150 million Euros in the expansion of the
container terminal BEST, which will allows the port of Barcelona to become one of the major
container hubs in the Mediterranean region. HPH aim was to build the port of Barcelona as one of
the most modern container terminals in Europe and the result exceeded all expectations: the capacity
of the terminal is one of the highest in the world (Revistarusa, 2015). Also In May 2007, a
consortium of companies HPH and Turkish Global Yatirim Holding, EIB Limas received concession
rights terminals operating in the Turkish port of Izmir. In August

  • 2. Globalization Is The Act Of Physical, Political, Social... Globalization is the act of physical, political, social and economic interaction of people across the world leading to an integrated system that is synchronized through common understanding (Scholte, 2000). The main area of concern is across border trade where business resources are shared beyond domestic markets to establish an interconnection with preferred foreign markets. There have been three forces that have continually increased the globalization phenomenon. They include transportation, technology and communication. Transportation Improvement in the transportation sector has been essential in enhancing globalization. The double stacking capabilities introduced incurred minimal extra costs of long distance shipment. The competitive capacity of rail transport was enhanced against the shipping industry. Road transport also embraced the advancement in containerization through new trailer or hauler trucks. Multiple containers could be latched onto one trailer and successfully delivered over long distances. Therefore, transfer of commodities was based on economies of scale with guaranteed minimum costs as compared to previous years. Due to standardized containerization, intermodal transportation emerged to effectively maneuver geographical constraints for timely deliveries. In this new system, integrated transport modes act in a specific sequence to ensure cargo is delivered door to door. Multiple networks of distribution centers linked to terminals were designed to penetrate a big portion of productive areas (Rodrigue, Comtois, & Slack, 2006). Customers no longer needed to have defined routes of cargo movement. Instead, they only needed to worry about the time of delivery and costs of shipment. The ability to enjoy faster transportation that was cheaper and covered longer distances as compared to previous decades, encouraged movement of people and goods through long distances. The ease and comfort in movement motivated the venture of investors and ordinary people into previously ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Characteristics Of Containerships Containerships are a very popular mean of cargo transport at sea. In this project the main features and design characteristics of containerships will be analyzed such as the size categories of containerships, the different types of cargoes that they are transporting , the characteristics of container gears and the speed that a container can develop. Also the major companies that own containerships and their structure will be described. Containerships are large commercial ships that are mostly traveling to oceans and their main purpose is to handle containers ,which are very big iron boxes with length around 12 meters. Consolidation abbreviated Although many companies have flirted with the idea of consolidation, few major companies of top 7–10 performers have made any meaningful headway towards consolidation via mergers. Maritime culture is heavily steeped in neoclassical model of economics, and the utilitarian ultra–capitalist teachings of Ayn Rand and Milton Friedman. Basically it has become a null point for powerful companies to work towards consolidation since they have natural business advantages already fixed in place. APM Maersk When interpreting the figures it is key to remember that the top carrier of goods is APM Maersk, holding 15–16% of the market. Lack of regulation and corporate governance has been elemental to creating a managerial culture that is not in accordance with cost–share, product differentiation, or business regulation/taxation. Proposed solutions abbreviated In order to create a culture that will be more open to consolidation, small companies who have more stake to gain than lose should form mergers in order to prove the validity of mergers. Issues concerning hazards, empty containers, and containers lost at sea are among the most important issues companies look to fix. With each one of these issues, more issues derive from each. Just a few of the hazards include smuggling, theft, contraband, and terrorism. As for empty containers, this issue continues to leave companies in a confusion as to how to manage it. NY Times comments that, "containers are the dream smuggling device. They enable traffickers to move large quantities of drugs without jeopardizing expensive light planes, boats, trucks and crews. Shipping fees are inconsequential compared to the tens of thousands of dollars demanded by contraband pilots, and there is no need to coordinate air drops and sometimes multiple transfers to boats and trucks." The Customs Service is in charge of fighting cocaine smugglers, but they are also in charge of keeping traffic moving smoothly through ports. The customs' officials say that they would like to search more containers but it is a hard task to obtain without causing an extensive disruption. Recently though, they have brought the National Guard into the picture. Even with their help inspectors anticipate opening fewer than 3 percent of the more than 1 million containers expected this year. Drug smuggling is not the only type of smuggling going on either. Human smuggling is on the uprise. • 10. Containerisation What is containerization and how did the innovative use of containers transform the distribution of goods? "Containerisation is a method of distributing merchandise in a unitised form suitable for transportation by rail, road, air, canal and sea." (Branch, 1996, p.194). The simple principle of the container has undoubtedly made the global economy grow, and brought the world closer together through ease of transportation (Wetherly & Otter, 2008, p.86–7). To be able to use one single sized unit for the transportation of goods was the ultimate solution to transporting cargo, which was becoming larger part of global trade, and helped put shipping into the modern age. In 1956, Malcolm McLean used an innovative idea to transport 58 trailer ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This reduces the need for warehouse space, decreases the risk of obsolescence and improves stock control (Hann, 2010). Faster transportation has transformed the distribution of goods in allowing a greater selection of cargo to travel further than it was previously capable of. So what about the costs? "The container made shipping cheap" (Levinson, 2006, p.10). Just after McLean's idea, it was thought that the costs of shipping were 11 percent of the value of United States exports, and could be as high as twenty–five percent. By contrast, shipping costs in comparison to product price have fallen sharply. (Asteris, 2009). It is not just the use of containers and ships that is responsible for the transportation costs, the larger normal routes, the increasing competition between the major container ship operators, such as Maesrk and Evergreen, the investment in modernising crane handling equipment and the logistics, have all had an impact. Before containerisation, businesses thought of distribution as a series of processes, ships, trucks and trains. Somebody had to move every box and pallet, and could easily consume half the cost of shipping. Levinson (2006) described this as "breaking bulk". With goods waiting in warehouses ready to be moved onto the next stage, transferring and delays made shipments slow and the delivery times erratic. The introduction of containers meant that for the first time, cargo could be locked away when in storage. Whiskey was ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

It defines the expenditures and also denotes the possibility of cost reductions from the supplier's marketing representative. This, for simplicities sake, can be possibly noted as the better of the two. The overall unit price $31.27, and with the tooling cost of $ 6,000 and 5,000 units delivered, the initial cost would be $162,350 for the first delivery (see figure 1). The $6,000 being a onetime fee for the re–tooling will only be charged during the first delivery, or may be spaced out over the course of several installments. Regardless, the re–tooling fee is not factored into the cost per unit as there is no length of time set for the contracting. With Original Wire being a local vendor, close buyer–seller relations may result from a long–term contract with price reductions. Since Original Wire claims it is 'hungry' for business, there is the possibility of some price negotiations as well. This system is based on a range of steel intermodal containers (also "shipping containers").These containers are built to standardized dimensions and can be loaded and unloaded, stacked, transported efficiently over long distances, and transferred from one mode of transport to another. Thus, it provided an economic way to ship 90% of the world trade goods across the globe and as a result has benefited society in providing for a truly open market to buy and sell goods. By using their expertise, they would be able to transform these used containers into something useful and beneficial. Through this, contractors are also able to add value to these containers that have once been unused. Extending the life of these discarded materials and providing affordable infrastructures to the people is a complete viable approach. Sturdy, convenient to transport and relatively cheap – these are some of the factors that have made the conversion of shipping containers into modern living and working spaces an ever growing trend in some other countries. However, little is only known about this innovation in Cebu. The proponents of this research study the supply and demand of these shipping containers. As end users create demand for the containers from the contractors as a finished infrastructures, these contractors are also creating a demand of raw shipping containers from the shipping companies. And yet there are more of these containers than what the people demanded, making a huge gap between the abundant supply of shipping container and the demand for them. The researchers ... • 16. Maritime Security Barriers In the recent times, there have been several advancements in transportation. This has been occasioned by the globalization trends. According to McNaught (2005), international maritime security is a matter of critical concern in the global environment. Sea transport remains one of the largest and most effective means of transport used between continents. This paper provides a critique of the article "Improving the security of containers in port related supply chains" by Johan Scholliers, Antti Permala, Sirra Toivonen, and Hannu Salmela. The article has an implied research question that the authors intended to answer. The question is: what are the technological options that can be used to enhance the integrity and security of containers in port related supply chains? In this regard, the question is academically rigorous as it examines a current issue in the global logistics and supply chains. According to Gunasekaran (2012), there is a growing concern that terrorists can use containers to deliver weapons of mass destruction to various destinations. Therefore, the authors focused on a study on possible ways to solve the problem. Research Questions and Hypothesis The article consists of implied hypotheses or assumptions that the authors relied upon to perform the study. One of the hypotheses is that technologies such as biometrics and radio frequency identification (RFID) can be used to provide effective container assessment. The second hypothesis is that application of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 27. Evolution of Intermodal Transportation With the global market becoming more connected and competitive, the United States supply chain needs to constantly evolve to survive. Advancing technology and E–Commerce allow customers to order products from literally anywhere in the world, resulting in a sudden emergence of strong global competition. To compete America needs to be able to provide the same goods faster and more efficient that their competitors. However many improvements in every branch of the American transportation supply chain including infrastructure and logistics need to be made in to achieve this. One practice that is becoming more essential to compete in the growing global market is intermodal freight transportation. Before the history and evolution of intermodal freight transportation can be discussed it must first be defined. One article defines intermodal freight transportation as "the use of two or more modes to move a shipment from origin to destination" (Dewitt and Clinger, n.d., p. 1). A prime example of intermodal freight transportation in America is transfer of trailers and containers from container ships to either trains or trucks. Goods are then typically transferred to trucks for the final delivery door to door. Intermodal transport is not only trailer and container traffic, but also bulk goods like grain, building products, and coal (Dewitt and Clinger, n.d.). In North America intermodal freight transport benefits from the country's huge landmass which offers great potential ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 29. Container Moving Freight : The Technology And Imaginative... Intermodal Containers Moving Freight The advancement in technology and imaginative techniques, the procedures and systems of how cargo is moved and handled is streamlined. Prior to containerization, moving freight from one location to another across the globe was a tedious practice and often took an extended amount of time. Manufacturers would use various configurations with dissimilar sizes and weights which led to additional time at each location being required to handle the different sized cargo. The use of intermodal containers has changed the shipping industry allowing for multiple modes of transportation to rapidly cross load the containers and mover the containers to the next destination. Implementing the use intermodal ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... There were significant delays in cross loading cargo onto the ship, workers would have to stack like packages, construct shipping pallets, and block and brace items in the hulls of the ships as well as the decks. When a piece of cargo was too large or heavy it would require additional material handling equipment to move the freight to the next transportation mode being either rail or road. At the receiving port there was also a time delay due to the need to offload the cargo by individual piece and separate in on the dock. Road and rail transportation were very effective, but encountered similar delays and issues depending on the size and weight of the cargo. This resulted in a call for change in the way freight is transported among all modes of transport. The Department of Transportation Federal Highway Administration identified the need to implement change which is topic in the Intermodal Surface Transportation Act of 1991 (ISTEA). Outlining what intermodal transportation is "utilizing two or more 'suitable' modes, in combination, to form an integrated transport chain aimed at achieving operationally efficient and cost effective delivery of goods in an environmentally sustainable manner from their ... Growing and Changing Technology Used for Port and Harbor Security Introduction The responsibility for port and harbor security in the United States is handled by the US Customs and Border Protection and the Coast Guard. These departments are part of the Department of Homeland Security. Port and Harbor Security is important because of vulnerabilities in various industries such as container shipping which are vulnerable to terrorist attack. US ports are considered to be a desirable target for attack because US ports handle 20 percent of Maritime trade worldwide. The maritime system in the United States entails sea and river ports that are more than 300 which consist of more than 3,700 passengers and cargo terminals. Any form of attack on the maritime system could potentially lead to loss of billions and bring about an adverse effect on the global economy. It is due to this case that technology has been used to improve security in US ports and harbors. This paper will focus on what forms of technology have been implemented and what functions do they serve in reducing vulnerabilities in the US maritime system. Technology trends in port and harbor security Port security for US maritime security entails the inclusion of two key programs whose primary objective is to protect against threats in containerized cargo . The programs include the Customs– Trade Partnership against Terrorism (C–TPAT) and the Container Security Initiative (CSI) which are tasked to identify containers of high ... • 31. The Intermodal Shipping Container is a large steel box... The Intermodal Shipping Container is a large steel box that was created to transport goods by train, truck, or ship for around the last 50 years. The pioneer of this revolutionizing box goes is a man by the name of Malcom McLean who began his transportation interest with his trucking company (McLean Trucking) that he built into one of the nation's largest. From there, he developed the steel container in 1956, which replaced the previous loading and unloading method known as the "Break Bulk Method." The Break Bulk Method was a much less efficient method where all goods are loaded individually using bags, boxes, drums, crates, or barrels instead of unified large containers. This method definitely being much more time consuming and risky ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Containers at half height are used to carry heavy, low volume products in order to not waste extra air space in containers. Last but not least, the car carrier containers are made specifically to transport different types of vehicles safely and efficiently. With many of these containers having distinct differences, they all serve the same general purpose for transportation. Container ships have completely redefined efficiency in terms of shipping quantity, speed, and safety. Before the mainstream introduction of container ships in the 1950's, shipping by sea was slow, not standardized, and very inefficient. Loading and unloading cargo required many long and strenuous man–hours, and was generally not safe. After World War II, the concept of standardized boxes for shipping was starting to grow, and on April 20, 1956 the SS Maxton shipped 58 truck– trailer vans from New York to Houston. Their chassis were not connected, and the boxes were loaded and unloaded from the ship by gantry crane–one of the most important pieces of machinery in intermodal containerization. This is not the first example of containerization, but indeed the first successful use of an intermodal structure. Almost immediately after, more cargo ships underwent modifications for these shipping containers. (Board) Businesses instantly realized the benefits, ports and ships were quickly modified for intermodal container support. However, they were not immediately as standardized as was necessary ... One area that is especially interesting related to transportation is the development of containerization and the idea of intermodal transportation. The idea of using containers to transport goods has been around since 1792, when the British and French used wooden containers and transferred them between railcars and horse drawn buggies. Around 1953, Malcolm McLean, a trucking businessman from North Carolina , began thinking about how he could better transport his goods. McLean was concerned about the time it was taking to deliver goods and also highway congestion. He was also worried that tucking would be overlooked ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... There was great deal of time wasted in every avenue of transportation by merely waiting, waiting for ships to arrive and waiting for crews to load and unload. Malcolm McLean knew that container shipping was the way to go and he spent his life focused on the container shipping trade. He could see that it would be easier and more economical, by being able to ship more at one time. Whereas McLean initially thought that driving a truck straight onto the ship was the way to go, in 1955 he realized that he could make container shipping even more economical by removing the container from the truck itself. By taking this action, he was able to save a third of the space that was taken up by wheels and creating the ability to stack containers. This motivated McLean to find ways to increase the container load on the ships. On April 26, 1956, the first container shipment of 100 containers, aboard Ideal–X launched from Newark, New Jersey and traveled to Houston, Texas. Ideal–X was originally a T–2, tanker ship. The containers were placed above deck on the ship. During the period from April to December, 1956, there were 44 container shipments, each carrying approximately 58 containers. Malcolm McLean brought Keith Tantlinger, a renowned container expert, onboard to his company. It was Tantlinger's job to increase the number of containers a ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 34. Existing Canals in the World: The Panama Canal and The... Introduction Canals are human–made and completely subject to the sovereignty of the state in which they are located. Canals are internal waters that have no right of innocent passage through canals. Typically, there are only two canals in the world – Panama Canal and Suez Canal. Panama Canal opened on 15 August 1914 with a total length of 80.5km (50 miles). Panama Canal is the integral link for shipping traffic from the Pacific and Atlantic Ocean in North U.S. (refer Fig. 1). Panama Canal consist a system of locks to raise or lower the ships to a new level. When a ships goes through one of the gates the water level decreases or increases depending on the level of the next lock. When the water level is the same as the next lock then the gate opens (Mitchell, 2011) (refer Fig 2). This combination successfully reduced the journey between east and west of US by 13,000 km (refer Fig 3) (Rodrigue et al., 2014). Thus, it is the main route from Europe to West of US and Pacific Ocean, accommodating an estimated 5% of the world's total cargo volume (U.S. Department of Transportation and Maritime Administration, 2013). There are about 1,200 ships passed through the canal every day and more than 14,000 ships transit the canal, 70% of the containerized freight is inbound or outbound from the U.S. East Coast annually (Knight, 2008). Gap has a sustainability and environmental issue when sourcing cotton. Gap Inc. scored a 0.5 out of a scale of 0 to 19.5 on cotton ranking, conducted by Rank a Brand. Which assessed "their cotton policy, sourcing and traceability based on publicly available information". Besides the sustainability concern, gap has an environmental issue. Sourcing unstainable cotton uses a tremendous amount of water, as "It takes more than 5,000 gallons of water to make enough cotton for just a T–shirt and a pair of jeans". It is also unclear to the consumer in which countries the cotton is sourced. Although not as glamorous, the advent of the steel container is at the core of today's global economy, responsible for accelerating the transfer of goods from place to place cheaply, efficiently and effectively. San Francisco primarily relied on the backbreaking manual labor of longshoremen to load and unload ships that came through the port, a profession that had existed unchanged for hundreds of years. Officials' beliefs that containers were a passing fad, in combination with the lack of investment and acreage required for the new technology, allowed the Port of San Francisco, and its longshoremen, to fade into history, just as its neighbor, the Port of Oakland emerged as a sophisticated leading container port. The migration of the maritime industry across the bay dramatically altered and restructured the economies of both San Francisco and Oakland. Similarly, their waterfronts were forever transformed. After World War II, the US economy boomed, while the maritime industry did not. The merchant fleet had been commandeered aby the government when the United States entered the war, and did not return to private ownership until two years after it ended, in 1947. Coastline shipping stagnated at prewar levels, while trucking grabbed the market share of domestic transportation. A cargo ship typically would spend as much time in port being loaded and unloaded as in transit, and was therefore unreasonably expensive. The Hong Kong based Hutchison Port Holdings is the worlds largest container operator, handling in 2014 more than 82 million TEU (Twenty Foot Equivalent Units), a 6% growth rate in volume in comparison with 2013 (Linton Nightingale, 2015). HPH has one of the most technology–intensive commercial operations in the transport industry today, and this is one of the success factors. Currently HPH operates 52 ports in 26 countries (Hutchison Port Holding, 2015).
