Computer And Smartphone Addiction ( S ) Are Becoming More...
Computer and smartphone addiction(s) are becoming more and more prevalent every year. From a 1
year old children to grown adult men and women. At first glance, these electronics look harmless.
But, if used in excess, someone can easily become addicted and not even know it. Smartphones have
social media apps such as Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter; that 's only naming a few. Many people
around the world habitually use and check on these apps, on an hourly to an everyday basis.
Continuously checking these apps will ultimately lead to addiction if not recognized and controlled.
Computers have the same effect along with help from the internet; video games, Netflix, Youtube,
can all entertain someone for a few hours. That time can easily be doubled, tripled and/or
quadrupled, because of how entertained or bored someone can be. Society needs to start realizing
how much time they are spending on their smartphones and computers. There has to be some sort of
equilibrium to establish, in order to not cause addiction or obsessive behavior. Smartphones and
computers are going to keep growing and expanding for decades. Technology impacts most of us in
our life; we are surrounded and engulfed by it. Our lives have been made easier and a little more fun
by the help of technology. For example, computers and smartphones. But, these technologies could
actually be quite harmful. Can people really become addicted to these technologies? Cooke 2 Over

Have Smartphones Destroy A Generation Essay
Have Smartphones Destroyed a Generation Besides the cell phone, does technology really affect us
in our society? Today's generation of teenagers are using smartphones much of the time. Researchers
also found that many teenagers are using more smartphones. This constant use of technology has
had negative effects on today's youth. Constant use of technology by teenagers is harmful because it
causes depression and affects education Jean M. Twinge proved that showing the bar graph of using
smartphones during the day and night; they found lots of impact. Smartphones have defined the
characteristics of the millennials; this is why it has led to changes in the society. The author has been
researching the use of smartphones with this generation for 25 years and has found that this
characteristic has come to define this generation. This generation has been increasing since the
"baby boomer "era that occurred after World War II, which started in 1939. Twinge was interested in
studying the millennial generation to find as much information as she could. She explains that she
found out that the excessive use of smartphones changes teen behaviors and emotional states. She
also showed us her analyses data to show us the differences. She explains there is a big difference
between the millennials and the predecessors like the way they view the world. It is not about only
their behavior they had that was the difference but also how they spent their time. "In 2012,

The New Addiction- Smartphones
Today Teenagers of the world have a new addiction. This new addiction is known as smartphones.
Teenagers between 15&17 nowadays are using smartphones without limits. Everywhere you turn
you see teens bending down or swiping or clicking their phones screen or sleeping with their
smartphones under the pillow. Day after day smartphones are becoming more central to teenagers
lives. A smartphone could be well–defines as a portable phone that has additional functions parallel
to personal digital assistance devices. Smartphones simplify communication and offer fast and easy
access to almost every single information needed in teens everyday life. But the fact the
smartphones took place over other devices such as cameras, clocks, library books, and computer
games make them more and more important, which also makes teens dependent to them. The
benefits could be severely undermined if mishandling and over use are not kept in check and under
controlled. Although older teenagers would disagree their use of smartphone should be monitored by
parents, because smartphone are distracting teenagers, causing them health problems, in addition to
encouraging them sexually. Teenagers are being distracted by their smartphones in many different
ways, that's why the use of them should be monitored by parents. To illustrate, texting, chatting,
tweeting, playing and watching videos on YouTube are enjoyable activates that many teens choose
to do during their spare time. However,

Can Excessive Cellphone Use Become An Addiction?
LITERATURE REVIEW Recent studies suggest that cell phones have evolved into something more
than a simple communication tool, gaining its own place in various aspects of social interaction. For
instance, a qualitative study on Australian adolescents revealed that cell phones play an integral part
in the lives of young Australians (Walsh, White, & Ross, 2008). Some of the participants in the
study reported very strong attachment to their cell phones; they felt as though their cell phones were
part of them. Mozes introduced the concept of materialism and the factors that contribute to society's
obsession without devices. In his article, "Can Excessive Cellphone Use Become an Addiction,"
published by U.S. News & World Report, Mozes stated, "The way we treat and interact with our
devices is often impulsive and uncontrollable. Roberts also explained that there are benefits to cell
phones, but, "like anything, if we go overboard it can become a problem." Roberts explained that
numerous factors including materialism and impulsiveness play a role in turning cell phone use into
an addiction. Roberts was quoted by Mozes as saying, "That's particularly true when we use them
excessively in public, . . . Because when we do so we're signaling that we've got this shiny object,
this status symbol, our iPhone or Android or Blackberry, and that we've got important people to talk
to or text, who are may be even more important than the people right in front of us. And that we're

Smartphone Addiction Essay
Over the past years, improper smartphone usage has been a widespread concernedly problem among
teens and college students. According to Hawi and Samaha (2016), "Smartphones are becoming an
integral part of the lives of all age worldwide. People feel inseparable from their smartphones" (p.
321). Problematic smartphone use are considered as an "important indicators that someone is on the
path to smartphone addiction" (Cevik, Gokcearslan, Haslaman, & Mumcu, 2016, p. 640). As the
emergence of smartphone addiction, a great deal of negative effects come along as well. Researchers
have worked to figure out the causal factors of smartphone addiction from both academic and
psychological field. In the meantime, social media becomes a controversial topic among researchers
since students spend most of their smartphone time on social media application. The question that
whether social media is beneficial for students' life is highly debated. Students now have many ways
to communication because of the rapid growth of communication technology. "Cell phones and
smartphones are used for both sending text messages and talking, while online communication
methods such as email, chat and social networking provide additional methods to keep in touch"
(Robinson & Stubberub, 2012, p. 105). Cell phone, as a powerful tool, provides college students
huge convenience to communication. Manolis, Roberts, and Yaya (2014) state that as young adults
and college students increasingly rely on cell phones,

Cell Phone Addiction Essay
The cell phone has become a centerpiece of everyday life as cell phones are evolving and have been
increasing their functionalities. Today, we use them today for many others reasons than what cell
phones were originally designed to do. People are using them so often that they are becoming
dependent on their phones that they have even become addicted to them. Those who are addicted to
their cell phones struggle to stay away from them for a certain period of time and become so
indulged in all of the unique things they can provide. With cell phone addiction comes many
problems or issues that can occur in an individual's life. Cell phone addiction has lead to differences
in people mentally, physically, and behaviorally.

Luigi Gallimberti, et. al discusses in their article "Problematic Cell Phone Use for Text Messaging
and Substance Abuse in Early Adolescence (11– to 13–year–olds)," that problematic cell phone use
(PCPU), is associated with psychological distress, low self–esteem, depression, drug abuse,
insomnia, and thoughts of suicide (356). The overuse of cellphones can really detriment a person
mentally and could cause them to arrive at one of these issues stated. An issue also arises when a
person with a cell phone addiction is in school. They tend to remain unfocused while on their phones
and they don't participate during class. In a sample, the students who had better test grades were less
likely to have a problematic cell phone addiction (Gallimberti, et. al 360). This finding confirms the
positive association between cell phone addiction and poor performance in school. In schools, it was
concluded that this overuse of cellphones was positively connected with deficient school
performance in teens with an average age of 15.7 years old (Gallimberti, et. al 360). Aviad Hadar

Cause And Effects Of Smartphone Addiction
5 6 7 Introduction: The smartphone is still a fairly new invention and is constantly being developed
and improved. This device has integrated itself into our culture and is slowly becoming essential to
our lives. The younger generation known as "Millennials" in the age range of 18–35 years old check
their cell phones on average about 75.6 times a day (Soto et al., 2017). This number is exceptionally
high when compared to the older generation who only check their phone around 23 times a day,
according to the same research. This paper will cover cell phone addiction and its effects on the
college students lifestyle. Addiction in this case is tied with the substance use criteria in The
Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM 5). In the criteria it states that
substance use is "a pathological pattern of behaviors related to use of the substance." Extremely high
smartphone use can lead to these behaviors where dependency is an issue. Symptoms of this
dependence include anxiety when away from the device, social media addiction due to ease of
access, and sedentary behaviors (Lepp et al., 2014). This excessive use is extremely prevalent in the
college scene due to how much hinges on their devices. Social media, school, communicating and
entertainment all hinge on the smartphone which in turn promotes its use creating a cycle that leads
to the addiction that most students are oblivious about. This device has a plethora of effects that
range from a decrease in quality academic performance to a complete disatisfaction with life (Lepp
et al., 2015). Can this behavior be able to be controlled or stopped using the right interventions? The
following text will explore the symptoms and effects of high smartphone usage amongst college
students, and see what intervention proves to be the most effective in solving this social issue. 3
Biological Perspective: Cell phone use produce a lot of stimuli for the user. Research has begun
bringing this to light. There is evidence that shows the relationship between cell phone use and your
neurocognitive functions. New research has shown that Cell phone usage may be directly linked to
your dopamine levels and tamper with your reward center (La Porta et al., 2006).

Use Of Mobile Phones On Teenagers
Abuse of Mobile Phones by Teenagers
Have you ever buried your face in your smartphone for hours? Have you missed out on events or
told your friends you couldn't hang out because you just wanted to stay at home and watch Netflix
or play video games? If so, you probably have, or have previously had, an addiction to technology.
The first Apple iPhone was only released ten years ago, and it is becoming a bigger issue for this
generation's teenagers. Teenagers are abusing modern technology it's affecting them and others
negatively because it encourages irritability and depression, discourages face–to–face interaction,
and puts teenager's privacy and safety at risk.
To begin, technology affects teenagers' mindset negatively. First, it can result in a lack of chemicals,
such as melatonin, a chemical triggered in your brain that helps you reach a state of relaxation. This
can be faulty to a regular sleep basis of a teenager, and it can take away from the eight to ten hours
of sleep that teenagers need, according to multiple studies. According to Dr . Lawrence J. Epstein,
"People who have problems with sleep are at increased risk for developing emotional disorders,
depression, and anxiety." Not only does sleep trigger anger, but competitiveness does as well;
multiple forms of social media support this idea that having more friends is better, even if you don't
know who they are. "The more followers you have, the more liked, respected and admired you are
by your fellow peers. Some

Internet Subdiction : The Dangers Of Addiction To The...
When people talk about addiction most minds go to opiates, cocaine, gambling, or possibly even
sex. What people often don't think of is internet addiction. There are several different ways to be
addicted to the internet, by way of social media such as Facebook or Instagram, pornography, online
gaming, online shopping, and even texting. The availability of the internet has changed over the
years, from only being accessible on computers plugged into walls with slow dial up connection, to
now smartphones with quick internet speeds that are carried around in our hands, purses, or pockets
everywhere we go. Having this accessibility makes it easy for people to spend countless hours
surfing the internet, texting, making purchases, or scrolling through social media. But doing this
may be doing more harm than good. Being addicted to the internet may be causing issues in people's
everyday relationships, work, mental health, and even daily tasks. First, many will argue that
because there is no physical substance being either ingested, injected, or that there is no money
being completely lost, that this "internet addiction" is indeed not real. But if people would take a
step back and look at today's society, one would quickly realize that maybe this concept isn't too far–
fetched after all. Take for instance when a person goes out to eat if they will take a look around at
their surrounding peers, how many of them are on their smartphones? How many of their

The Problem Of Smartphone Addiction
Nowadays, we can easily see people sitting around each other but only staring at their smartphone
without any conversation. Smartphones of today have so many features that people can hardly seem
to look up and keep them for a second. These behavior is more likely to be see as an addiction.
Obviously, people have different opinion regarding smartphone addiction where some people think
it is a problem whereas some might not. Despite of all the facts and opinion we question ourselves
are we even addicted to smartphone? Do we reach for our smartphone first thing in the morning? Is
our smartphone the last thing we check at night? In "Stop Smartphone Insanity", the purpose of the
commercial is to persuade people to stop smartphone addiction that is dangerous and I think that
they did an excellent job presenting their idea.
The "Stop Smartphone Insanity" is a Public Service announcement which uses comedic and satirical
style of presentation to convey their message on creating awareness to people to look up and stop
smartphone addiction. The main character who is extremely addicted to his smartphone acted as Jim
Carrey to exaggerate how insanely people addicted to their smartphone. The commercial starts by
introducing the him and followed by some unfortunate event which is caused by his negligence
towards his surroundings because of his addiction. Jim was distracted with his phone when sitting
with his friend in the cafeteria, bumping into the doors, lamp post and even into random

Are Smartphones Harming Younger Generations?
In my Unit 4 essay, I propose to argue that smartphones are harming the younger generations. Since
the younger generation is born into a society where every data, learning, amusement, and everything
else, is just one search away. They are certainly living in the information age with technology that is
just a few years ago was unthinkable. Numerous individuals do not understand how this is an issue.
For Unit 4 I choose option 2 because I am mainly focus on smartphones affecting the younger
generation which will fall under in technology and social structures category. The media also
portrays a big role when it comes to smartphones because it has set a mark for every age group. That
smartphones can take high quality pictures and videos, send emails, play video games and of course
make phone calls. Stuart Hall and Paddy Whannel's "The Young Audience" is very similar to what I
will discuss because of the popularity of smartphone many teens are attracted to the features like I
mention before and its basically handheld computers for their thumbs. However, it is sitting a
concern on the academic aspects of kids and teens. As well as teens not being aware of their
surroundings let alone paying attention in class. With this argument, it's different from others that I
have done because it is concerning a particular age group which will bring better understanding
about why we ought to be concerned. In this essay I am going to closely examine how the media is
shaping our society with

Negative Effect Smartphones
Nowadays, more and more people have their own smartphones and the time they spend using their
phones is rising. The number of smartphone users are forecast to grow from 2.1 billion in 2016 to
around 2.5 billion in 2019, with smartphone penetration rates increasing as well (Statista, 2017). As
a result, the increase number of smartphone usage were addicted to smartphone. Moreover,
smartphone usually effect people's lives especially mobile phones have a powerful influence of
people's social skills. Based on a study shows that 47% people feel comfortable while they
communicate with others online but they feel nervous when they talk to people face–to–face.
(source) Thus, in this essay, I will discuss how smartphones can have a negative effect on people's
social skills. Smartphones make people lose their patience easily because people received so much
information everyday. Many children receiver their smartphones when they just 6 years ago, they are
subjected to a variety of information everyday whether good or not. In addition, they can read more
than one information at the same time which mean they maybe cannot concentrate on one thing. And
with the progress of science and technology, the speed of people accept information is rapidly
increasing. This phenomenon could lead to a serious problem which is people would lose their
patience. Based on professor Frank Partnoy says: "The crush of technology drives us to make instant
decisions and follow our short–term animal

Smartphone Addiction
Smartphones have become a big part of our lives. People are always using their smartphones for
various reasons and the result is a generation that is connected to their phones. The over use of
smartphones affects people's mental health which is described as "A person's condition with regard
to their psychological and emotional well–being." resulting in depression, anxiety, addiction, lack of
sleep, and less motivation. Smartphones are helpful but they have more problems than the help they
offer. For these reasons smartphones are becoming a necessary evil that is damaging our lives.
Smartphones have become part of our everyday life and it is very difficult to go without them due to
our societies high use of them. The problematic use has been noted in China because "Smartphones
are becoming increasingly indispensable in everyday life for most undergraduates in China, and this
has been associated with problematic use or addiction." (Chen) The addiction that results from using
smartphones may seem like it is benign but it really is a big problem. The students are becoming
more addicted to their smartphones which will cause a number of issues. The smartphones are
becoming more part of our society and our lives due to the increase of technology in our everyday
lives. Smartphone overuse is also associated with other factors. In this study they found that "...The

Texting Is Not Safe ! Haha
"I can not discuss this now. Driving and Facebooking is not safe! Haha." were the last words of
Taylor Sauer, before her car traveling at 80 mph slammed into a tanker truck (Hosansky 407). At just
18, a Utah State University student lost her life due to the distraction that millions of Americans find
themselves facing: smartphones. While on her way to visiting family in Idaho, one bad decision
resulted in her death. " I think she was probably texting to stay awake, she was probably tired,"
stated her father. "But that's not a reason to do it, and the kids think they're invincible. To them,
texting is not distracting; they are so proficient at texting that they don't feel it's distracted driving."
(Hosansky 407). Taylor's father raised an essential question: Are teenagers unaware of the damage
that their favorite devices can cause if misused? Smartphones raise a serious concern, especially
among parents. This is due to both the psychological damage and danger that smartphones place on
their children whose brains are not yet fully developed. According to a study conducted on 404
undergraduate students, three–fourths felt that they are dependent on their phones.() The increasing
use and popularity of smartphones are an issue that can cause relationship issues, safety concerns,
and distractions all which can be detrimental to society. One of the most detrimental consequences
of smartphones is the distraction they promote while driving. They are not only endangering both

shopping malls and even in public transportation stops. Their heads down unaware of the world
around them. These zombies are either focused on the latest text, tweet, or email, and cannot be
bothered by humans. In today's word smartphones are creating modern–day zombies by controlling
them, just like how zombies are being controlled by their disease. Throughout the years a cellphone
meant a portable phone to communicate, "In 1973 Matty Copper made the very first phone call" (
Wall street Journal. 2013 ) The main use of a cellphone was to only make a call or to text, as years
passed cellphones then upgraded, and included various types of apps where people can use social

epidemic. Researchers in different countries raise the alarms about the smartphone overuse while
diligently working on a multiplicity of approaches for its evaluation. Brenda Piddy has addressed the
significance of the epidemic of pocket devices and social media in her article The Growing Problem

Smartphones : The Problems And Effects Of The Smart Phone
Nearly all of the today's society has a smartphone in hand. As a whole, we depend on this phone in
the same aspect as we did a baby blanket in our childhood. Major mental health issues, such as lack
of social skills, memory problems, and stress are due to this technology. These are some of the
biggest concerns when it comes to owning a phone, unfortunately, the effects are not fully realized.
These devices have brought several problems in user's lives, despite supposedly making it easier.
Everyday human social interactions are suffering due to the parts smartphones play. Furthermore,
being connected through this technology is something that is bragged upon, users are not as

Users no longer depend on their own brain to help them know what they need to, the smartphone is
relied upon completely and when it dies or is damaged those people are utterly lost on what to do.
As Christian Louis Lange has stated, "Technology is a useful servant, but a dangerous master."
Treated as if it is the memory, people no longer attempt to remember events on their own. Stress is
encountered in everyday life and technology does not give the individual the opportunity to step
away. The constant use of these devices gives no breaks to the user, always looking at emails, calls,
texts, and social media. The younger generation especially struggles with this feeling of being
unable to get away. "The majority of their participants reported that they felt they were expected to
be available around the clock, which increased feelings of stress" (Ofcom Report, 2011.) The feeling
of constantly needing to check one's device only amplifies this feeling of stress and inescapability.
This need to know what is happening in the outside world at all times is almost like an addiction,
that if a user does not answer or check their smartphone they will be missing out on critical events.
The inability to withdraw causes the stress of work or school to follow wherever that person goes
and the stress of being connected is never ending in society today. Smartphones were originally
intended to help users live more efficient, stress–free

The Effects Of Technology On The Human Mind
As time continues on, technology slowly grows as a bigger part of people lives every day. In the
Back to the Future film series, people truly thought that by this time in the 21st century, 2015, the
world would hold some of the greatest technology yet, and humans have created some immensely
useful machines, but most people cannot step away from a tiny piece of tech that people call a
smartphone. They might be deemed as helpful but also damaging if taken advantage of. Albert
Einstein, a German theoretical physicist, once said, "I fear the day that technology will surpass our
human interaction." People have begun to believe that this day has come upon us. Human's
involvement with smartphones has grown significantly, and this has begun a list of negative effects
on the human mind. Scientists have studied some of the many effects of the internet and smart
phones. Many people have noticed a growing change with cell phones and mental disorders, and this
has started to become a problem. Cell phones have many components, and their link to mental
disorders also holds many parts. The first part in the link between cell phones and mental disorders
classifies to all of their growing components, their causes and negative effects, but people have
started to find ways to put their phones down and others, and studies have begun the help prevent
even further damage. Cell phone growth has become a major problem in today's society, leading to

student testimonials that only proves that teenagers from the ages sixteen to eighteen feel the need to

Although people of all age–ranges use their smartphone device daily, people are more concerned of
those who are younger. Adults born before the 2000s were raised in a world and society that was not
technology based, so seeing the first generation to experience it can be unsettling. It is quite evident
that almost every teen has a smartphone, and will use it at any given opportunity. The problem is
teenagers actually use it anytime, even if the time is not appropriate. Many teens from the ages
sixteen through eighteen are receiving their driver's license, but have a hard time not using
smartphones while driving. This causes great dangers to everyone else on the roads. In some cases,
people have been in accidents caused by people texting while driving. Unfortunately, many
individuals have lost their lives because of someone texting while driving. In Turkle's' piece
"Growing up Tethered" she includes student testimonials such as Roman's. "Roman, eighteen,
admits that he texts while driving and he is not going to stop. 'I know I should, but it's not going to
happen. If I get a Facebook message or something posted on my wall . . . I have to see it. I have to'"
(Turkle 236). Though teenagers are very aware of circumstances when texting while driving, that
still does not stop them from doing so. The constant "need" of being connected with friends and

From having good grades, to studying for the ACT, in addition to trying to fit into the social aspect
in high school a teens life has never been more hard. And the invention of the smartphone has only
added to the amount of stress that a teen has to deal with. The smartphone has created an
environment in which adolescents are always connected with those they go to highschool with,
through the use of social media. For example if a bully were to be picking on a student at school the
student could not just go home and forget about the incident, but now the bully has the ability to
abuse that student at any point he/she desires. These types of incidents are creating a new wave of
problems for adolescents and their parents, Nojiri Matthew interviewed Rick Wolf (assistant
superintendent at Mifflin School district) explaining "The increase in social media use has added
another element when identifying and caring for kids dealing with anxiety, depression, eating
disorders, attention–deficit/hyperactivity disorder and other mental health disorders, Wolf said"
(Wolf). The smartphone is the catalyst to these problems. If you were to take away the smartphone
problems such as cyberbullying would be less of an issue. However adolescents these days are given
smartphones at such a young age, with no supervision on how long they use it throughout the day,
that it becomes second nature to be looking at it every minute of everyday checking their social
media profiles.

Summary Of Smartphone Addiction By Jessie Brown
In "Jessie Brown: Who Says Smartphone Addiction is bad thing? The case for constant connectivity"
(Brown, 2012), Brown claims that the cellphone is not the problem, in fact, it is the person and how
they choose to value their time while using smartphones. In the article "Who says smart phone
addiction is a bad thing? The case for constant connectivity." (Toronto Life, 2012), Jesse Brown
breaks down his reasons and beliefs on the negativity surrounding smart phones that perceived as an
addiction. Correspondingly, Brown states that notification sounds and buzzing from our devices tells
us, we are important and wanted, however we fear that we won't be able to live without this constant
stream of reassuring stimulation. Moreover, Brown tries to convey that smartphones are not the
problem, we're the problem. We reply on smartphones for everything way more than we need to.
Furthermore, we make checking our smartphones our top priority by immediately jumping when we
hear sounds that indicate notifications. Accordingly, we are on high alert because of these
notifications, which could be anything from an important work update or a friend's text. ... Show

Social Media Wellness, By Ana Homayoun
Ana Homayoun, author of Social Media Wellness: Helping Teens and Tweens Thrive in an
Unbalanced Digital World, wrote an article in The New York Times about the conflicts parents face
with allowing their children to have smartphones. She gives insight on how to minimize the risk of
smartphone addiction by establishing guidelines and monitoring children's use. Reasons for Concern
In Homayoun's article, she cites a study done by Common Sense Media in 2016 which found that
half of teenagers felt addicted to their smartphones, 78 percent checked their devices hourly, and 72
percent of teens felt pressured to respond immediately to social media messages, texts, or any kind
of notification. Homayoun also cites another study done by Pew Research in 2015 which found that
74 percent of teenagers from 13– to 17–year–olds had smartphones and a quarter of them felt like
they were online continuously. Distinguishing Appropriate Use from Abusive Behavior ... Show

Many times children are using their devices for both school work and free time simultaneously.
Homayoun suggest looking for certain signs to see whether their smartphone use is
counterproductive or not. Hilarie Cash, a psychotherapist and the chief clinical officer at reSTART,
says to look for sudden intense anxiety, irritability, or even aggression when the device is taken
away; lying, breaking rules, skipping social events to spend more time on the phone, and sleep
deprivation can also be red flags for abuse. A 10–item questionnaire developed by South Korean
researchers was published in the journal PLOS One and is great tool for identifying those red flags
and determining smartphone addictions in

Smartphone Addiction
Is Smartphone Addiction Killing Today's Teens? "The arrival of the smartphones had radically
changed every aspect of teenagers' lives, from the nature of their social interactions to their mental
health" (Twenge 60). Smartphones are easy–to–carry mobile devices that almost have the functions
of a computer like internet access, video games, social networks, and of course calls and text
messages. In 2014 in the USA almost 60% of the population owned a smartphone (Cheever, et al.
291). The percentage of people that own a smartphone has been increasing fast since then, especially
in young people who overuse their mobile devices. Excessive use of smartphones is associated with
the addiction to these devices and other psychological imbalances that can lead to death.
Smartphone addiction is changing the behavior and attitudes of today's teenagers which can lead to
serious psychological issues. Excessive use of smartphones can lead to addiction, which can cause
radical behavioral changes, sleep deprivation and serious physical and psychological problems over
time. For people who use their smartphones more on a daily basis, it becomes harder for them to live
without these mobile devices (Cheever 290). Smartphone and internet addiction is a compulsive
usage of Internet or smartphone in an excessive and immoderate way (Yildiz 66). Some teens and
young college students feel the need to be connected to their smartphones all the time (Chisholm 77)

A Deep Rooted And Almost Automatic Action People
INTRODUCTION Multitasking– a deep–rooted and almost automatic action people take part in
every day. On the forefront, multitasking seems simple. Multitasking occurs when a person alters
their attention from input to input or from task to task in order to complete several things within the
same time period (Van der Horst et al. 434). However, technological advancements continue to
revolutionize how society multitasks, thus changing the nature of the everyday work environment.
In fact, companies waste about two hours of work time each day because of constant disruptions
(Lee and Duffy 138). While technology makes it easier to accomplish more tasks in less time or at
the same time, it also creates a sense of necessity for people to multitask ... Show more content on

students was around 2.4 with a p–value of 0.004. Since the p–value equaled less than one, a
correlation existed between smartphone usage and GPA values. In addition, between low–risk
addiction males and females, males (had higher odds of generating a worse GPA than females (Hawi
and Samaha 86). Male odds averaged around 4.3 while female odds averaged around 2.3 and each
p–value fell below one indicating a statistical significance (Hawi and Samaha 86). Notably, the
above data does not represent an entire population, for the study took place at a small Lebanon
University and only those informed of the survey took part (Hawi and Samaha 88). Nonetheless, the
study presents a frightening reality for managers because students make up the future workforce. A
GPA reflects a student's output and academic productivity just like sales numbers and performance
reviews reflect an employee's output and productivity. If new hires possess an increased disposition
for smartphone addiction, this study shows they may be poor performers. Additionally, since males
had a higher chance of producing lower GPAs than females, managers should expect employee
gender differences. Male employees may get more distracted than females if known to have a smart–

Phone Addiction Essay
Phone Addiction for Teens and Their Parents In the article "Half of Teens Think They're Addicted to
Their Smartphones" by Kelly Wallace the general argument is that phones are addictive not just to
teens, but to everyone. Wallace starts the article by talking about how her children, 8 and 10 years
old, are spending more and more time on iPads while on spring break. Due to this early iPad
addiction she worries about her children for when they are older and have their own phones. It then
goes to a few different polls that state that everybody, not just teens, are becoming addicted to their
cell phones. According to a survey Common Sense Media conducted 50% of teens personally feel
they are addicted to their phone. Even more ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Janis Elspas, founder of Mommy Blog Expert, says that she, "believes the rules and boundaries
parents set for their children when they get their first cell phone or smartphone might be helpful in
heading off any addictions later on."(9) Elspas' children, now 18 and 20, didn't own their first cell
phones until they were at least a junior in high school with money to pay for part of their phone
bills. Elspas also has a no phone rule at table which goes to her and her husband, their children and
any friends her kids bring over. She believes, "Such a rule can prove to kids, firsthand, that they can
'survive' without having to see or use their smartphone constantly"(12) While phone addiction is still
running rampant the Common Sense Media poll found that more than a third, 37%, of teens very
often or at least occasionally try to cut down on the time they spend on their electronics. Many
parents complain about how this generation overuses and can't seem to put their phones down, but
many parents will admit they don't always have the easiest time unplugging themselves. Twenty–
seven percent of parents feel that they are addicted to their phones as well and 28% of teens believe
they are as well. Both teens and parents admit to checking their at least hourly with parents at 69%

The Diagnostic Criteria For Smartphone Addiction
The diagnostic criteria for smartphone addiction proposed in this study were based on the population
with the currently largest sample size and the diagnoses were validated by psychiatric interviews.
Our findings indicated that smartphone addiction has overlapping features with substance–related or
behavioral addictive disorders, but the unique properties of smartphones, i.e. its excellent
accessibility and multiple Internet–based applications, contributed to its unique but prevalent
addictive behaviors.
We proposed that a strict definition for smartphone–related functional impairment, requiring two or
more functional impairment criteria influenced by smartphone use. This definition is different from
the diagnostic criteria for functional impairment in DSM–5. Compared to computer–based Internet
addiction, the portability of smartphones dampens the severity of functional impairment associated
with smartphone addiction, but instead influences multiple domains of an individual's daily life. In
addition, because smartphone addiction is a heterogeneous and multi–faceted condition [26], we
should evaluate the heterogeneity of its functional impairment from different angles.
The symptom criteria in this study provided evidence that smartphone addiction has similar
psychopathology with the traditional substance use disorders. The core symptoms of substance use
disorders are "impaired control", which consist of four criteria: (1) use larger amounts/longer, (2)
repeated attempts to

Smartphones And Teens : The Negative Effects Of Smartphone...
The majority of citizens today have access to a smartphone, and a large portion of a person's time is
spent on social media, research, and many other tasks. The smartphones we utilize in everyday life
offer many benefits, and it is also an activity that the brain enjoys. This is due to dopamine, a
chemical that is produced by the brain. This fosters an individual to further indulge in an activity. In
extreme cases consequently, this can cause an addiction, which triggers an individual to be incapable
of discontinuing their obsession. As a result, smartphone addiction has developed into a serious
issue, especially in teenagers. Jean M. Twenge, a psychology professor at San Diego State
University and journalist on The Atlantic, shows concern when surveying her undergraduate
students. As stated by Twenge, many students possessed the mindset of an addict in regards to using
their phone in bed: "I know I shouldn't, but I just can't help it". Smartphones have altered the United
States in many positive aspects; however, there are many adverse effects that it can have on a
teenager's lifestyle. Smartphone addiction initially affects a person emotionally. When a person
starts to overuse their device, they begin to uphold a life of increased isolation. This seclusion leads
to the deterioration of family ties, friendships, and any other relation with the environment around
the individual. Accordingly, this confinement increases the likelihood of depression and even
suicide.

Negative Effects Of Technology On Teenagers
Lawrence J. Epstein,
"People who have problems with sleep are at increased risk for developing emotional disorders,
depression, and anxiety." Not only does sleep trigger anger, but competitiveness does as well;
multiple forms of social media support this idea that having more friends is better, even if you don't
know who they are. "The more followers you have, the more liked, respected and admired you are
by your fellow peers. Some people even go to the extreme lengths

adults are unbelievable stats. Nomophia is a disease that makes you addicted to your mobile phone.
As the technology grows in the community people get more attached to their phones. " The key
reason for this is that smartphones have become central in communication and are perceived
necessary to own in order to stay in touch with others," (Tran). The technology has grown
tremendously throughout the 2,000, and this just helps nomophia. The More the phone does the
more addicted people get to their mobile device. When you think of addictions you might think of
drugs, and alcohol, even though this disorder is not bad as drugs or alcohol it is still an addiction. On

Causes And Disadvantages Of Smartphone Addiction
INTRODUCTION Smartphones addiction is when you use a smartphone even when you know that
you should not use it or when you make excuses for it usefulness. In early times, people made and
received phone calls using cellular phones. However, nowadays, cellular phones are often small
computers (i.e., smartphones ) as new technology has evolved. For example, people can watch
movies and listen to music on one of these devices. Therefore, the global smartphone market grew
rapidly in 2010 compared with the previous years. With every passing day, technology is overtaking
our daily lives. In fact, 56 percent of all Americans own one. The phone, computer, tablet and other

But when we succumb to smartphone addiction, we become slaves to our phone. This affects our

continually glued to a small, glowing LCD screen. Things that you can do to prevent smartphone
addiction is to lock your phone with an annoyingly long password. Most people set a short password
so they can unlock their phone quickly. But to prevent the addiction, set a long password instead.
Make it at least 15 characters long, and include symbols and uppercase letters. The inconvenience of
unlocking your phone means that you won't use your phone mindlessly. Other than that is you can

Smartphones Are Destroying The New Generation Essay
Smartphones Are Destroying the New Generation Children who have been born since 1995 have
never known a world without smartphones and a constant social media connection. "Theirs is a
generation shaped by the smartphone and by the concomitant rise of social media" (Twenge).
Smartphones have caused rapid shifts in the latest generation, affecting happiness levels, mental
health, social development, and academic performance; therefore, parents need to recognize the
negative impact and reduce the accessibility. Big Changes Compared to Previous Generations A
study that analyzed generational data since 1930 saw abrupt shifts around 2012, especially regarding
teen emotional states and behaviors. There was a disappearance of significant distinctive
characteristics of the Millennials (Twenge). Millennials "are a highly individualistic generation"
(Twenge), even more so than previous generations. However, suddenly, in the current generation,
"the allure of independence, so powerful to previous generations, holds less sway over today's teens"
(Twenge). They don't leave the house much without their parents; in fact, 12th graders in 2015 went
out less than 8th graders in 2009. Today, teens are radically different from Millennials in their views
and time usage (Twenge). They don't date as much as previous generations, even as seniors in High

It is not something to blow off and take lightly. It can really take a toll on a young teenager. Since
you are most likely hunched over when you are using a cellular device it is putting lots of strain on
your back which can cause lots of problems to it and can leave some permanent damage. "According
to 2015 statistics, 45% of young people aged 16 to 24 now suffer from back pain as their spinal

depending on the angle at which the person is texting."(Leonard) Smartphones can also cause

The Addiction Of Cell Phones Essay
The Addiction of Cell Phones A bus driver, who was responsible for transportation of children from
school to home, pulled out his phone and began texting. Soon after, the driver swerved the school
bus and entered into another lane crashing into another bus and toppled over, killing two children
and one adult (Murdock). Phone addiction is a new addiction associated with the use of cell phones
and using it for many hours. In recent times, the falling prices of mobile phones have led to the
affordability of the devices with more people owning a mobile phone, especially smartphones.
Studies continue to establish whether phone addiction affects people, how it affects them and the
different ways it affects different genders and ages. An international poll of 5,000 Britons,
Americans, Chinese, South Koreans, South Africans, Indians, Brazilians, and Indonesians found that
most people spent hours on their smartphones (Gilbert). 84% respondents revealed that it is
impossible for them to spend a day without their smartphones, with 50% sleeping with their phones
next to them like a teddy bear (Gilbert). Over 20% check their smart phones every ten minutes, with
24% using it to set up rendezvous meetings with those they were having affairs with (Gilbert). From
these statistics, it is becoming apparent that increase in reliance of cell phones is rising signaling the
evolution of usage of phones from a habit to that of addiction. It is important to examine the
addiction that is sweeping

  • 7. Can Excessive Cellphone Use Become An Addiction? LITERATURE REVIEW Recent studies suggest that cell phones have evolved into something more than a simple communication tool, gaining its own place in various aspects of social interaction. For instance, a qualitative study on Australian adolescents revealed that cell phones play an integral part in the lives of young Australians (Walsh, White, & Ross, 2008). Some of the participants in the study reported very strong attachment to their cell phones; they felt as though their cell phones were part of them. Mozes introduced the concept of materialism and the factors that contribute to society's obsession without devices. In his article, "Can Excessive Cellphone Use Become an Addiction," published by U.S. News & World Report, Mozes stated, "The way we treat and interact with our devices is often impulsive and uncontrollable. Roberts also explained that there are benefits to cell phones, but, "like anything, if we go overboard it can become a problem." Roberts explained that numerous factors including materialism and impulsiveness play a role in turning cell phone use into an addiction. Roberts was quoted by Mozes as saying, "That's particularly true when we use them excessively in public, . . . Because when we do so we're signaling that we've got this shiny object, this status symbol, our iPhone or Android or Blackberry, and that we've got important people to talk to or text, who are may be even more important than the people right in front of us. • 13. Cause And Effects Of Smartphone Addiction 5 6 7 Introduction: The smartphone is still a fairly new invention and is constantly being developed and improved. This device has integrated itself into our culture and is slowly becoming essential to our lives. The younger generation known as "Millennials" in the age range of 18–35 years old check their cell phones on average about 75.6 times a day (Soto et al., 2017). This number is exceptionally high when compared to the older generation who only check their phone around 23 times a day, according to the same research. This paper will cover cell phone addiction and its effects on the college students lifestyle. Addiction in this case is tied with the substance use criteria in The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM 5). In the criteria it states that substance use is "a pathological pattern of behaviors related to use of the substance." Extremely high smartphone use can lead to these behaviors where dependency is an issue. Symptoms of this dependence include anxiety when away from the device, social media addiction due to ease of access, and sedentary behaviors (Lepp et al., 2014). This excessive use is extremely prevalent in the college scene due to how much hinges on their devices. Social media, school, communicating and entertainment all hinge on the smartphone which in turn promotes its use creating a cycle that leads to the addiction that most students are oblivious about. This device has a plethora of effects that range from a decrease in quality academic performance to a complete disatisfaction with life (Lepp et al., 2015). Can this behavior be able to be controlled or stopped using the right interventions? The following text will explore the symptoms and effects of high smartphone usage amongst college students, and see what intervention proves to be the most effective in solving this social issue. 3 Biological Perspective: Cell phone use produce a lot of stimuli for the user. Research has begun bringing this to light. There is evidence that shows the relationship between cell phone use and your neurocognitive functions. New research has shown that Cell phone usage may be directly linked to your dopamine levels and tamper with your reward center (La Porta et al., 2006). ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 15. Use Of Mobile Phones On Teenagers Abuse of Mobile Phones by Teenagers Have you ever buried your face in your smartphone for hours? Have you missed out on events or told your friends you couldn't hang out because you just wanted to stay at home and watch Netflix or play video games? If so, you probably have, or have previously had, an addiction to technology. The first Apple iPhone was only released ten years ago, and it is becoming a bigger issue for this generation's teenagers. Teenagers are abusing modern technology it's affecting them and others negatively because it encourages irritability and depression, discourages face–to–face interaction, and puts teenager's privacy and safety at risk. To begin, technology affects teenagers' mindset negatively. First, it can result in a lack of chemicals, such as melatonin, a chemical triggered in your brain that helps you reach a state of relaxation. This can be faulty to a regular sleep basis of a teenager, and it can take away from the eight to ten hours of sleep that teenagers need, according to multiple studies. According to Dr . Lawrence J. Epstein, "People who have problems with sleep are at increased risk for developing emotional disorders, depression, and anxiety." Not only does sleep trigger anger, but competitiveness does as well; multiple forms of social media support this idea that having more friends is better, even if you don't know who they are. • 17. Internet Subdiction : The Dangers Of Addiction To The... When people talk about addiction most minds go to opiates, cocaine, gambling, or possibly even sex. What people often don't think of is internet addiction. There are several different ways to be addicted to the internet, by way of social media such as Facebook or Instagram, pornography, online gaming, online shopping, and even texting. The availability of the internet has changed over the years, from only being accessible on computers plugged into walls with slow dial up connection, to now smartphones with quick internet speeds that are carried around in our hands, purses, or pockets everywhere we go. Having this accessibility makes it easy for people to spend countless hours surfing the internet, texting, making purchases, or scrolling through social media. But doing this may be doing more harm than good. Being addicted to the internet may be causing issues in people's everyday relationships, work, mental health, and even daily tasks. First, many will argue that because there is no physical substance being either ingested, injected, or that there is no money being completely lost, that this "internet addiction" is indeed not real. But if people would take a step back and look at today's society, one would quickly realize that maybe this concept isn't too far– fetched after all. Take for instance when a person goes out to eat if they will take a look around at their surrounding peers, how many of them are on their smartphones? How many of their surrounding peers are ... • 19. The Problem Of Smartphone Addiction Nowadays, we can easily see people sitting around each other but only staring at their smartphone without any conversation. Smartphones of today have so many features that people can hardly seem to look up and keep them for a second. These behavior is more likely to be see as an addiction. Obviously, people have different opinion regarding smartphone addiction where some people think it is a problem whereas some might not. Despite of all the facts and opinion we question ourselves are we even addicted to smartphone? Do we reach for our smartphone first thing in the morning? Is our smartphone the last thing we check at night? In "Stop Smartphone Insanity", the purpose of the commercial is to persuade people to stop smartphone addiction that is dangerous and I think that they did an excellent job presenting their idea. The "Stop Smartphone Insanity" is a Public Service announcement which uses comedic and satirical style of presentation to convey their message on creating awareness to people to look up and stop smartphone addiction. The main character who is extremely addicted to his smartphone acted as Jim Carrey to exaggerate how insanely people addicted to their smartphone. The commercial starts by introducing the him and followed by some unfortunate event which is caused by his negligence towards his surroundings because of his addiction. Jim was distracted with his phone when sitting with his friend in the cafeteria, bumping into the doors, lamp post and even into random ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 21. Are Smartphones Harming Younger Generations? In my Unit 4 essay, I propose to argue that smartphones are harming the younger generations. Since the younger generation is born into a society where every data, learning, amusement, and everything else, is just one search away. They are certainly living in the information age with technology that is just a few years ago was unthinkable. Numerous individuals do not understand how this is an issue. For Unit 4 I choose option 2 because I am mainly focus on smartphones affecting the younger generation which will fall under in technology and social structures category. The media also portrays a big role when it comes to smartphones because it has set a mark for every age group. That smartphones can take high quality pictures and videos, send emails, play video games and of course make phone calls. Stuart Hall and Paddy Whannel's "The Young Audience" is very similar to what I will discuss because of the popularity of smartphone many teens are attracted to the features like I mention before and its basically handheld computers for their thumbs. However, it is sitting a concern on the academic aspects of kids and teens. As well as teens not being aware of their surroundings let alone paying attention in class. With this argument, it's different from others that I have done because it is concerning a particular age group which will bring better understanding about why we ought to be concerned. In this essay I am going to closely examine how the media is shaping our society with ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The number of smartphone users are forecast to grow from 2.1 billion in 2016 to around 2.5 billion in 2019, with smartphone penetration rates increasing as well (Statista, 2017). As a result, the increase number of smartphone usage were addicted to smartphone. Moreover, smartphone usually effect people's lives especially mobile phones have a powerful influence of people's social skills. Based on a study shows that 47% people feel comfortable while they communicate with others online but they feel nervous when they talk to people face–to–face. (source) Thus, in this essay, I will discuss how smartphones can have a negative effect on people's social skills. Smartphones make people lose their patience easily because people received so much information everyday. Many children receiver their smartphones when they just 6 years ago, they are subjected to a variety of information everyday whether good or not. In addition, they can read more than one information at the same time which mean they maybe cannot concentrate on one thing. And with the progress of science and technology, the speed of people accept information is rapidly increasing. This phenomenon could lead to a serious problem which is people would lose their patience. Haha." were the last words of Taylor Sauer, before her car traveling at 80 mph slammed into a tanker truck (Hosansky 407). At just 18, a Utah State University student lost her life due to the distraction that millions of Americans find themselves facing: smartphones. While on her way to visiting family in Idaho, one bad decision resulted in her death. " I think she was probably texting to stay awake, she was probably tired," stated her father. "But that's not a reason to do it, and the kids think they're invincible. To them, texting is not distracting; they are so proficient at texting that they don't feel it's distracted driving." (Hosansky 407). Taylor's father raised an essential question: Are teenagers unaware of the damage that their favorite devices can cause if misused? Smartphones raise a serious concern, especially among parents. This is due to both the psychological damage and danger that smartphones place on their children whose brains are not yet fully developed. According to a study conducted on 404 undergraduate students, three–fourths felt that they are dependent on their phones.() The increasing use and popularity of smartphones are an issue that can cause relationship issues, safety concerns, and distractions all which can be detrimental to society. Users no longer depend on their own brain to help them know what they need to, the smartphone is relied upon completely and when it dies or is damaged those people are utterly lost on what to do. As Christian Louis Lange has stated, "Technology is a useful servant, but a dangerous master." Treated as if it is the memory, people no longer attempt to remember events on their own. Stress is encountered in everyday life and technology does not give the individual the opportunity to step away. The constant use of these devices gives no breaks to the user, always looking at emails, calls, texts, and social media. The younger generation especially struggles with this feeling of being unable to get away. "The majority of their participants reported that they felt they were expected to be available around the clock, which increased feelings of stress" (Ofcom Report, 2011.) The feeling of constantly needing to check one's device only amplifies this feeling of stress and inescapability. This need to know what is happening in the outside world at all times is almost like an addiction, that if a user does not answer or check their smartphone they will be missing out on critical events. Smartphones are easy–to–carry mobile devices that almost have the functions of a computer like internet access, video games, social networks, and of course calls and text messages. In 2014 in the USA almost 60% of the population owned a smartphone (Cheever, et al. 291). The percentage of people that own a smartphone has been increasing fast since then, especially in young people who overuse their mobile devices. • 53. The Diagnostic Criteria For Smartphone Addiction The diagnostic criteria for smartphone addiction proposed in this study were based on the population with the currently largest sample size and the diagnoses were validated by psychiatric interviews. Our findings indicated that smartphone addiction has overlapping features with substance–related or behavioral addictive disorders, but the unique properties of smartphones, i.e. its excellent accessibility and multiple Internet–based applications, contributed to its unique but prevalent addictive behaviors. We proposed that a strict definition for smartphone–related functional impairment, requiring two or more functional impairment criteria influenced by smartphone use. This definition is different from the diagnostic criteria for functional impairment in DSM–5. Compared to computer–based Internet addiction, the portability of smartphones dampens the severity of functional impairment associated with smartphone addiction, but instead influences multiple domains of an individual's daily life. In addition, because smartphone addiction is a heterogeneous and multi–faceted condition [26], we should evaluate the heterogeneity of its functional impairment from different angles. • 57. Smartphones And Teens : The Negative Effects Of Smartphone... The majority of citizens today have access to a smartphone, and a large portion of a person's time is spent on social media, research, and many other tasks. The smartphones we utilize in everyday life offer many benefits, and it is also an activity that the brain enjoys. This is due to dopamine, a chemical that is produced by the brain. This fosters an individual to further indulge in an activity. In extreme cases consequently, this can cause an addiction, which triggers an individual to be incapable of discontinuing their obsession. As a result, smartphone addiction has developed into a serious issue, especially in teenagers. Jean M. Twenge, a psychology professor at San Diego State University and journalist on The Atlantic, shows concern when surveying her undergraduate students. As stated by Twenge, many students possessed the mindset of an addict in regards to using their phone in bed: "I know I shouldn't, but I just can't help it". Smartphone addiction initially affects a person emotionally. When a person starts to overuse their device, they begin to uphold a life of increased isolation.
