The Influence Of The Introspection Movement
The shift in thought and methodology that led to the cognitive revolution began with the introspection movement, which influenced the study of
behaviorism, and, in turn, led to a completely new way of understanding how to study human behavior.
Introspection is limited by the extent in which it can be studied. Because thoughts can only be understood and experienced by the individual having
them, there is no way to accurately assess and study the mental events that are occurring within the mind. In an attempt to keep introspection within the
realms of scientific inquiry, Wilhelm Wundt and E.B. Titchener believed that introspectors should be carefully trained to observe, assess, and report on
their experiences. This was to be done with as little interpretation as possible. Still, there was no way for even the most meticulously reported
experiences to be observed by others. Introspection is a tool that relies on experiencing and focusing on conscious thoughts, so another limitation
involves unconscious thoughts. If you're not aware of the mental event, you can't look to it for understanding. These were the fundamental flaws with
introspection as a science. These limitations guided scientists towards the cognitive revolution because it became clear that understanding mental
events is important to understanding behavior, and in order to be useful to science, there needs to be testability. Behaviorism offered scientists the
opportunity to gather objective data, which is something

Personal Narrative: Knowing Ourselves Through Introspection
I am interested in learning more about chapter fives Knowing Ourselves through Introspection because I am always interested in learning more about
myself. I enjoy reading things about my personality especially when it's right. Horoscopes, zodiac signs, blood types, genetic's, and birth order are all
things that interest me just because they act as an reinforcer to why I act the way I do. So this is just another way for me to understand myself and I
enjoy that. I believe that this is important because knowing oneself means that you can control yourself and become a greater part of society. Socrates
one of the greatest known philosophers who question both identity and existence. He believe that without understanding yourself one would not be able
to know anything (Socrates).... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
I also believe that knowing more about myself helps me when it comes to my life. I am an artist and I spend most of my time in my own head so
perhaps that is were I get such an interest in things about my self. While I paint I like to add pieces of things that remind myself of what I enjoy.
An example of that would be that I hate the color yellow so it rarely is in any of my art I do but I like reds and blues so I am more likely to use
those colors. Another example, is that I don't draw a lot of abstract things I prefer natural pretty things that have subjects such as animals, plants,
landscapes, and people. Which is where individual differences really show up because what I like can be different from what others might like
(Aronson Pg. 6). Since every one is different does't that mean are reactions toward a person might be different toward two other people in the same

Internalization And Philosophical Introspection In Dorothy...
Internalization and Philosophical Introspection Contradictory to my previous rubric, the second rubric that I created is one which focuses on
internalization, or more specifically, philosophical introspection. Introspection is another modernist literary quality that emerged after the start of
World War I. The first war had a large impact on society and that particular generation at the time, as losses were large during the war, and grew even
larger with the outbreak of influenza. To The Lighthouse byVirginia Woolfand The Tunnel by Dorothy Richardson both are included in this rubric. To
The Lighthouse is entirely philosophical introspection and inner turmoil. The novel is narrated in third person omniscient, therefore we are not limited
to one unreliable character to recount the story. Each character in the novel had a specific personal issue that was thought over in the text. Plot–wise,
nothing happened in the novel except for the passing of time, a few deaths, and the war. All of which were spoken of using less than two sentences.
Contrary to the previous rubric, this modernist novel was more focused on the intrapersonal connections of the characters and their inner dialogue
instead of events. In The Tunnel, the reader is faced with a strong female protagonist who arguably has just as much philosophical introspection as the
characters in To The Lighthouse. Richardson utilizes Miriam's position in society to make a critique of how the modern woman at this time was

Personal Narrative-The Introspection Of Stereotypes
Following along with my nocturnal routine, I scroll past digital photos people feel important enough to put on display for the rest of us. Strategically

"OK but look @ my mom's 1980's bedroom #tbt." Although I find this use of millennial language to be a bit distasteful, the tenderness behind a
daughter presenting her access to her mother's adolescence strikes me. Introspection comes at the oddest times. What would I, in fifteen years, have to

2050 And Introspection By Ronald Heller
The year is 2050 and introspection has taken over the world. Mind control devices are causing human beings to fight among each other. Technology
has been our downfall. My name is Ronald Heller and I am one of the few human beings that have not been subject to introspection. The reason is that
ninety two percent of the world has become evil. I am one of the last of the true believers. People known as true believers are immune to introspection.
The fate of mankind depends on us the true believers. Introspection was believed to be what would bring peace to the human race but it was vindictive
and created the RPF the organization of rehabilitation project force. The RPF is what began to manipulate human beings minds. They thought they were
doing things to make things better. What really happened was that people allowed themselves to be manipulated. Everyone is frightened now, except

The human consciousness is a critical part of life, and a well studied topic in psychology. While the exact reasons for consciousness are still
unknown, the effects of a consciousness have been researched extensively. I've always been interested in consciousness and the evolution from just
practicality to a deeper level of feeling and why self awareness developed. Consciousness plays a key role in psychology, as being self aware allows for
critical thinking as well as fast learning.

consciousness in relation to experience, as well as the Ubiquity of Inner Awareness thesis, the proof in favor of it, and the skeptical

Are Mental States To Neurobiological States?
Are Mental States Irreducible To Neurobiological States?
Today I'll be discussing Patricia Smith Churchland's Are Mental States Irreducible to Neurobiological States. According to The Norton Introduction to
Philosophy, "[Churchland] is known for her work connecting neuroscience and traditional philosophical topics such as consciousness, the self, free will
and ethics" (T.N.I.P, 424).
Terms needed to understand the material:
1.Qualia– also known as "qualitative character of experiences, sensations, [and] feelings..." (Churchland, 1).
2.Introspective– "observation or examination of ones own mental and emotional state"(Dictionary.com)
Churchland begins her article by explaining Thomas Nagel belief of having a point of view. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Although she has trouble believing in the second premise that brain states are not knowable by introspection. This brings the main argument "are
mental states identical to brain states".
Churchland breaks it down to this: if mental states are identical all to brain states then when you observe you mental states you are also observing the
brain state which is identical. Churchland states, " I may not describe my mental state as a brain state but whether I do depends on what information I
have about the brain, not upon whether the mental state really is identical to some brain state . The identity can be a fact about the world
independently of my knowledge that is a fact about the world" (Churchland, 2).She gives the following example " Jones swallows an aspirin, he thereby
swallows acetylsalicylic acid, whether or not he thought" in other words "identities may obtain even when we have not discovered that they
do"(Churchland, 2). Lastly, I'lol be discussing Churchland 's interpretation of Frank Jackson's Argument: Knowing our sensations. Churchland explains
Jacksons argument as "showing the differences between knowing our states via introspection and knowing via non–introspective means are of such
nature as to constitute grounds for denying the reducibility of psychology to neuroscience" (Churchland, 4). I 'll be summarizing Churchland 's
summary of Jacksons constructed argument. A neuroscientist (Mary) who lives her entire life seeing no colors but

Review Of ' Dennett 's ' Quining Qualia '
Paper 1 – Question 3: Dennett's "Quining Qualia"
Daniel Dennett looks to quine qualia, or completely disprove their existence, in "Quining Qualia." He is successful in creating a theoretical framework
by which many intuitive arguments for qualia can be struck down. Because of his success, an argument from introspection is difficult to make; Dennett
seems to successfully refute many of the arguments given by intuition or folk psychology. I will adopt Eugene Park's criticism in critiquing Dennett,
showing that an argument from introspection can provide some insight into how qualia might exist. Park argues that relying on memory comparison is
incomplete, and unfairly eliminates direct apprehensibility.
Introduction
In "Quining Qualia," ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This makes qualia inherently private. The fourth and last quality is direct apprehensibility to consciousness. This describes the fact that we know
everything about our own qualia, and we can easily access all of its properties. Dennett explains that because qualia are "properties of my experiences,"
they therefore must be accessible to one's conscious states (229).
The coffee–test case: Intuition pump 7 – Chase and Sanborn Dennett uses the seventh intuition pump to explore the relationship between qualia and
reactive attitudes to those qualia. The situation involves two coffee tasters who work for Maxwell House, ensuring that each batch is of consistent
quality. After six years of tastings, both Chase and Sanborn declare that they used to like thetaste of the coffee, but that this is no longer the case.
Chase says that he thinks that the coffee tastes the same as it did six years ago, but that he has become a more "sophisticated" coffee drinker and his
more unfavorable reaction (or reactive attitude) towards the coffee has decreased his enjoyment of it. Sanborn, however, does not like the coffee
because he says his taste buds have changed, and now the coffee tastes worse than before. Sanborn claims that his taste–qualia have changed, not his
reactive attitude towards the coffee. It is difficult, however, to discern whether Chase and Sanborn are actually correct in

Boredom, the thing that is agonizing that you almost every day, it may just have some actual benefits. For one, it is actually helping our brains;
we need our attention more directed to introspection to keep us in shape. Second, your mind will eventually wander, and you won't be bored at all,
so it is fine to embrace it. Out of boredom, Isaac Newton realized how the world's gravity works, you can find out great things with boredom.
Boredom is helpful for our brains, we need our attention more directed to introspection to keep us in shape. Introspection is needed to be focused on

Functionalism: A Psychological Analysis
Functionalism is the philosophy of science to which Behaviourism belongs too. According to Farrell, p.g. 364 "For functionalists, mental states had to
be understood in terms of the functions that they performed, and these functions were a matter of allowing an organism to survive in its environment."
Behaviourism was founded upon this philosophy and focused on observable behaviour. This paper will examine how behaviourism was able to stand
up to the strict philosophy of science of functionalism and the reasons it did not prevent the fall of behaviourism.
Edward Lee Thorndike was one of the earliest Behaviourists. At the time, introspection was used to study mental states and consciousness. Thorndike
rejected the use of introspection for three reasons. Thorndike believed that studying objective behaviour could expand the scope of psychology.
Secondly, mental states can be studied by other means, introspection as a superior form of investigation is based on misconception because mental
states can be studied objectively. Lastly, consciousness is linked to behaviour and actions as such, it can only be studied through behaviour (Farrell
2014 p.g. 367). Other behaviourists such as Watson also rejected introspection for because subjective data was unreliable (Farrell 2014... Show more

of mental states as being separated into body/mind, thought/action (Farrell 2014 p.g. 346). Thus, things such as thought and action can only be
understood in terms of how they interact to help an organism adapt to its environment (Farrell 2014 p.g.

Introspection Essay
The dictionary describes introspection as the examination or observation of one's own mental and emotional processes. Kevin Woods stated,
"Introspection are all about getting to know yourself at the core, uncovering your values and then deciding for yourself what's the best action to
take." Your emotions and feelings play a major role in why we do things. If we listen to our feelings then we can find more things about us that we
didn't know. This could benefit us and help us appreciate more things and live but also may make us overthink some times. Karl Perera mentioned,
"Introspection is good in small doses. If you are feeling very tired or have no energy and can't find a solution as things keep rolling through your mind
over and over then it is time to stop." Overall, everyone connects with things differently; it is interesting to notice how you feel in certain situations.

changing her attitudes. However, Nomi engaging her environment in deeper thought is evidenced in her coming to realize that she does poorly in
school because she is: "already anticipating failure."(Toews 2) With this new insight, Nomi writes her story as an assignment for submission to Mr.

Early in the novel, Holden expresses the reason for his difficulties in school as his being: "always surrounded by phonies."(Salinger 13) Holden is

How Does Augustine's Use Of Introspection?
Introspection also known as self–examination is used in many different ways throughout history; especially in literature. Authors can investigate
themselves using the introspection of self or they can examine their characters. Throughout history, there is a shift in introspection. The works of
Augustine, Dante and Boccaccio reveal the shift from self–examination to the examination of characters.
Confessions is regarded as the first ancient autobiography. Augustine in this work, reveals not only his Christian spirit and beliefs but his regrets from
his early life (902). His Confessions is a prime example of an author's introspection and dedication to present a detailed account of what he believes is
his faults and triumphs in life (903). Besides ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Dante created this foundational text for the European literary imagination that sparked a stream of literary creation (1205). According to the Middle
Ages definition of a comedy, it must have a narrative structure that begins in misery and ends in happiness, it should contain a range of styles and
people and focus on people's private and inward lives(1211). By following this structure he creates not only a perfect comedy but a perfect mix of
introspections. Dante creates this perfect mix through many different techniques. Similarly to Augustine to fulfill his self–reflection, he makes himself
the main character so that readers get to discover Dante himself and his Christian spirit. In Canto I of Inferno, Dante the Pilgrim has wandered off
the path and wakes up in a dark wood. He says "How hard it is to tell what is was like,/this wood of wilderness, savage and stubborn/(the thought of
which brings back all of my old fears)"(1214, lines 4–6). While this passage could be using Dante just to make readers relate more to him being in this
dark wood, the insertion of "which brings back all of my old fears" opens up the author's character or the character he wants to portray of himself.
Dante also includes an introspection of his characters which in turn scrutinize society. In Canto XIX, Dante meets Pope Nicholas III. The Pope also
predicts that Pope Clement V would soon in his circle of hell. It says "But actually I was the she–bears's son,/so greedy to advance my cubs, that
wealth/ I pocketed in life, and here, myself...I, in my turn, shall join the rest below/ as soon as he comes, the one I thought you were" (1273, lines
70–72,76–77). Dante uses this introspection of the priests to also analyze society and get his message across to those who read his Comedia. The
combination of self and society creates an even mix of introspection that furthers his

has good morals. However, we have been taught at a young age that nobody is perfect, so are physicians an exception? I think while being a pre–med
student, it is easy to get lost in the idea of a physician and forget that they are people with strengths and weaknesses too. Despite this, after listening to

Limitations Of Introspection And Behaviorism
In the beginning of the chapter, some limitations and shortcomings of introspection and behaviorism are explained and illustrated as reasons for the
occurance of the "cognitive revolution." During the late nineteenth century, Wilhelm Wundt and Edward Bradford Titchener decided that the only way
to study thoughts was through introspection, or to look within oneself to study the topic of our mental lives. The primary limitation of this method lies
in its nature. When studying or researching oneself, there is not another party to test the claims and perform the scientific method to prove or disprove
findings. "Science" that is performed by one individual and based on one individual is simply anecdotal and opinionated. Additionally, there is no way
to "introspect" on one's unconscious self, which is a huge influence on decision making and a person's mental makeup as whole. Due to these
limitations of introspection as a research tool, many psychologists abandoned it completely on the basis that psychology would never be a science,
should it progress in this manner (Cognition, pg. 9). By the first half of the twentieth century, behaviorist theory started to control the field of
psychology. The study of behaviors could yield testable claims due its objective data that could be recorded by observing another human's behaviors.
The stimuli that happens in the environment around people is also objective data that could be recorded and manipulated for different tests and
experiments.

Limitations Of Cognitive Psychology
Cognitive psychology is an important field because it studies everything that makes up who a person is, based on what they know, think, and feel
(Cognition, pg. 3). Understanding cognitive psychology can help people make better decisions and help recognize how people accomplish great
things (Cognition, pg. 4). For example, if a person is having a hard time focusing in class and they discover when the chatty people behind them do not
show up they take better notes, than it is beneficial for them to cognitively decide to sit somewhere else. This example shows how understanding
cognitive psychology can allow someone to get to know himself or herself better, therefore making better personal decisions. Getting a basic
understanding of cognitive psychology involves four fundamental concepts: the intrinsic limitations of introspection and behaviorism, working
memory, the role of the amygdala, and the structure of a neuron and synapse.
The concept of cognitive psychology came about in the 1950s, discovered by two psychologists named Wilhelm Wundt and Edward Titchener (
Cognition, pg. 8). It was previously thought that psychology could not study the world directly, but these two researchers founded the idea of
introspection, meaning to observe and record our own mental lives (Cognition, pg. 9). Although introspection seemed like an ingenious way to directly
study people, it turned out to have a couple intrinsic limitations. First, it did not account for unconscious thoughts. For

Shakespearean text itself via the interjection of genre and the reassigning of dialogue, within the metatheatre, is the true feminist representation of the

Introspection in How to Tell a True War Story, and Into...
In the text, "How to Tell a True War Story" Tim O'Brien expresses his thoughts about the true war story and how the war story is changed according
to the person who tells it. Jon Krakauer illustrates Chris McCandless's journey into the Alaskan wilderness and reasons for McCandless's gruesome
death in an isolated place, in his book "Into the Wild." O'Brien relates introspection and a soldier's war story by saying that the war story portrays the
feelings of a soldier. A soldier's war story is not the exact war story; it is the illustration of that particular soldier's perception. Narrating a war story is
not like inundating others with facts and numbers however, it is about the introspection of a soldier, because that soldier determines... Show more

As an author, O'Brien explains feelings of one of his readers in this way "She'll explain that as a rule she hates war stories; she can't understand
why people want to wallow in all the blood and gore" (449). This reader views a war story as inhumane, and it conveys the cruelty of blood and
death. This is an easy conclusion, but it is also trivial. Most obvious part of a war story is numbers and facts regarding the casualties, and it will
absorb the whole attention of a person. It will create a thought that war stories are always savage. If that person never attempts to see the
inconspicuous part of the war story, it never comes to brink. Then the false conclusion of the war story persists forever. This false conclusion is created
due to the ambiguity that existed in perceiving an experience. The reason for this ambiguity is superficial thoughts about that experience. To discover
more about McCandless, Krakauer not only travels to wilderness and questions himself but also gathers information about McCandless from people
who knew him. Krakauer shares the view of an Alaskan correspondent, which says "The scope of his self–styled adventure was so small as to ring

'incompetent' person. Words of this correspondent criticize the act of McCandless without any substantial information. This shows that

as it is the process of looking into and analyzing one's self. A leader must be capable of examining their own thoughts and feelings, because if they
cannot even understand themselves, how can they expect to share these ideas they are creating with others? Concentration is necessary to complete a
task fully and well. Deresiewicz shares a study in which the researchers observed multitaskers to learn how well they were able to process information

Arguments Against Leibniz's Law
RenГ© Descartes, one of the fathers of modern philosophy, provides many strong arguments in support of substance dualism with the use of Leibniz's
Law. I aim to first identify one of Descartes' stronger points in which he uses Leibniz's Law to support the existence of substance dualism, explain why
the argument is popular and believable, and then finally disprove his theory.
To begin, it is important to clarify the meaning of Leibniz's Law in order to understand how it is applied to Descartes "argument of introspection".

B." The handout goes further to provide an example of this Law being applied ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
I argue that we are observing, not learning, the exact same as if we were to observe our body. Therefore, the argument thatmind/body are distinct does
not hold true. I could see Descartes argument holding true if our mental states were constantly changing. For example, if I felt a certain way when
seeing an object, learned I felt this way through introspection, and then the next day I felt a different way when seeing the same object, then
introspection would be a tool to learn about our constantly changing. However, I believe that our beliefs, emotions, thoughts, and temperament remain
relatively stagnant so that introspection is simply observing out preexisting mental makeup that remains the same. For example, when I have to
complete a homework assignment I truly feel unexcited to complete the assignment. Through introspection, I learned I feel this way towards
homework and it remains constant. This is an observation, the same as if I were to observe my hair blows in the wind. When I have to complete my

Introspection vs Behaviourism
So, should psychology study things and hypothesize about things that are not directly observable? Before I begin my argument I want to point out that
the word "psychology" is the combination of two terms – study (ology) and soul (psyche), or mind. The derivation of the word from Latin gives it this
clear and obvious meaning: The study of the soul or mind. I believe that Behaviourists such as Watson wished to alter the meaning of the word '
psychology' because it was not sufficient or capable of answering the metaphysical questions such as "what is the mind?" and "what is consciousness?"
They believed that the discipline could only be effective or 'scientific' if every hypothetical question could be operationalized and therefore quantified,

Human motivations, emotions, thoughts and behaviours are messy, unpredictable and every human being is a unique bit of mystery. Maybe it
shouldn't be a question of 'can the experiment be replicated in the laboratory' because we don't live in labs. I believe a more pragmatic approach will
eventually answer many of the questions psychology struggles with and that's also what I think MacDougall was advocating in his argument.
Watson, as a leading behaviourist of the day advocated for complete rejection of mental phenomena and the concept of consciousness had no place in
science b/c mental phenomena cannot be directly observable. So Watson was suggesting that psychology can only be defined as a science if it denies
the mind, whaa?! I suggest advocates for this position would instead be more comfortable if they left "Psych"ology to its rightful place as the study of
the human mind, and therefore human nature, and instead form a science called Behaviourology.
But really, what is the point of experimenting and making observations if you don't further attempt to determine WHY the observed behaviour occurs?
For example: take a child that was physically abused every day of his life and then observe that he grows into an adult who physically abuses his
children. Wow how fascinating, not. I believe that this only becomes a question for/of psychology when the observer attempts to determine WHY these

Boredom In The Brain Research Paper
Someone is sitting there, they have nothing to do. That person just got done with their daily routine. It is so miserable. They just do not know what
to do. This is actually good for the brain. People all around the world hate being bored. Everyone who hates having nothing to do has an opinion that
boredom is no good at all. On the other hand, studies are starting to prove that boredom is good for the brain. More boredom in the human life is
necessary. One reason more boredom in the human life is necessary is, the human brain will get out of shape if there is no boredom in it. A whole
attention network in the brain only works when bored, it is called the introspection network. The introspection network of the brain is the part of the

How Do Self Schemas Develop And How Are They Maintained?
How do Self–Schemas Develop and How are they Maintained?
Schemas are detailed cognitive networks stored in long term memory. They organise and relate information from past experiences to represent an
individual's construal of different objects and events (Eysenck & Keane, 2015). Similar cognitive networks about oneself are self–schemas. According
to Markus (1977) these guide self–related actions and behaviour, and form self–concept. This knowledge is important for improving oneself, building
self–esteem, and striving for success (Suls & Wheeler, 2011). The initial development of schemas and self–awareness is thought to occur in childhood;
detailed in Piaget's Stage Theory (Piaget, 1976). Rather than exploring child cognitive development, this essay will discuss some of the theories of
individual self–schema development and some ways they are maintained under threat.
Self–Discrepancy Theory
The first approach to self–schema development we will evaluate is Self–Discrepancy Theory (SDT) (Higgins, 1987). In this theory self–schemas
develop to drive the actual self (who somebody is now) towards the ideal self (who somebody wants to be) and the ought self (who somebody should
be according to others). Reflected appraisals build a network of the actual self, and this knowledge is used to move towards the ideal and ought selves.
Discrepancies between actual and ideal result in dejection, and discrepancies between actual and ought result in agitation (Higgins, Bond, Klein, &

Limitations Of Introspection And Behaviorism
From Chapter 1: What were the intrinsic limitations of introspection and behaviorism, and how did these limitations lead to the "cognitive
revolution"? Introspection requires a subject to delve deep into their own mind, and report on that externally. They must be trained to be able to be
objective in all their observations, including their own thoughts (Cognition, pg. 9). While this seems to be something that would be incredibly useful,
the first limitation is in unconscious thoughts. There are many processes that happen in a human's mind "behind the scenes" that cannot be
experienced or observed by the subject. The second limitation lies in the scientific method. An experience happening inside a subject's head cannot
be replicated, tested, or compared. There is no way to disprove a subject's claims on pain, thought processes, or anything else (Cognition, pg. 10).
Behaviorism relies on behaviors that can be observed. In recording behavior on a regular basis, a subject's learning history can be recorded, leading to
more knowledge on how their decisions are made. The limitation lies in the solution. If only behavior can be observed, a subject's interpretation, which
guides the behavior, cannot (Cognition, pg. 12). A subject's understanding of a situation changes the situation. Someone can ask for salt in a myriad of
ways, and it will be interpreted correctly by most people (Cognition, pg. 13). Introspection relies on thoughts that cannot be corroborated, while

The Strengths And Weaknesses Of Introspection As A Method...
Critically evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of introspection as a method for investigating psychological phenomenon
Introspection has an incredibly large history with the first record of it being used going right back to the great Greek philosophers such as Plato and
Aristotle, however this was in a philosophical sense about discovering oneself (Boring, E. G. 1953) which lead to the scientific methodology being
born in the laboratory of arguably the father of psychology Wilhelm Wundt who used the method to measure peoples internal thought processes when
presented with various stimuli in which the subject would self–perceive their internal thought processes and describe them to the experimenter. An
example of this would be to present the subject with an object such as a pencil or odour and to describe it and their stream of consciousness as a result of
this. Whereas Edward Titchener expanded this somewhat to break down the stream of consciousness to find its component parts and so as such when
having to describe the item they could not say the item as that was to make a stimulus error and did not achieve anything and instead had to describe
it in individual parts such as length, colour, shape and other such characteristics of the item however even these were frowned upon with more
emphasis being put on the statements such as it is causing feelings of sorrow and tension within my body (Boring, E. G. 1953). However the definition
of this process seems to be somewhat fluid

This man who used a method of introspection to scientifically identify basic mental elements of the mind such as touch, smell and etc. Humans can use
these contexts to associate which the elements that give the feelings. He also was a British psychologist who studied under and had the chance to work
with Wilhelm Wundt the father of structuralism the founder of the experimentalpsychology in the United States and established the very first
psychology laboratory in 1879 for many many years who was born January 11, 1867 and died August 3, 1927 would have to be Edward Titchener.

Edward had absolutely no interest in studying animals, children, abnormal behavior and individual differences. Titchener soon started with an
investigation of elementary mental processes which is the primary study of the senses which also include the images and affections. The sensations
have a minimum of four attributes which the quality, clearness, intensity and duration. Once again introspection is a term used for contemporary
philosophy of the human mind which means that learning about ones own currently ongoing or their recent past you can of course learn about your
own mind in the same way you learn about others just by reading texts about how the mind works of others and noticing their body language and facial
expressions in a way that no other can and that is where introspection comes in handy with the general regards as a process. There are several ways to
generate judgments from introspection without self detection or at least statements about someones own current mental

Wundt Contribution To Behaviourism Essay
It has always been in our nature to be interested in the behaviour of our own species. Psychology, as the scientific study of behavioural developments,
can be traced back to when philosophy was the leading way of thinking. However, once people began to apply experimental methods to better
understand the complex nature of behaviour, psychology became increasingly acknowledged and documented. This essay will focus on the significant
figures, such as Wilhelm Wundt, William James and John Watson, which contributed to the history of the study of psychology. It will aim to outline the
main factors that are responsible for the change from the introspective method to behaviourism. Fundamentally concentrating on the differing nature of
the two; from examining our own thoughts and how they affect others to investigating more observable behaviour in response to a stimulus.
Furthermore, this essay will endeavour to critically evaluate why behaviourism has been favoured in America looking at the strengths and limitations
of the two methods to come to an informed conclusion supporting the superiority of a behaviourist approach. These objectives will be achieved by
using psychological research where appropriate.
The formal history of modern psychology dates to 1879. In Leipzig, Germany, Wundt opened the first psychology laboratory. Yet, this was only the start
of Wundt's contributions to the psychology field. During this time, philosophers inquisitively looked for answers to questions

Perception, Introspection, Reason And Memory Essay
There are four different sources of knowledge: perception, introspection, reason and memory. All our knowledge roots from our perception. Perception
is the way humans sense the world outside the body. We perceive through our five senses: see, hear, smell, taste, and touch. Humans gain knowledge
through experiences and experience through perception. Usually we can trust our senses to perceive our surroundings effectively but there are times we
misperceive. Illusions, hallucinations or impediments of the accurate flow of information to our senses are examples of misperceptions. For example if
someone hits their head causing their vision to blur or impedes them from effectively processing what occurring around them, then they shouldn't trust
their senses. Another example would be an anxiety attack causing a signal of threat to the brain also preventing the person from correctly processing
their surroundings. If nothing can prove we are misperceiving then we have good reason to be believe our senses.
Introspection is a source of knowledge about our mental states. Introspection is the way humans examine and observe their own mental and emotional
states. Even though usually accurate, sometimes the beliefs we form through introspection can be incorrect. Being in a dispositional mental state can
cause false beliefs about our mental states. For example if someone is traumatized due to experiencing a violent relationship, they begin to think that
every relationship will be an abusive

The Introspection And Behaviorism Movements
The introspection and behaviorism movements in psychology both had certain flaws and limitations that did not allow them to examine underlying
cognitive processes. However, their flaws in studying psychology were on opposite sides of the same coin. The reconciliation of these two flawed
fields, along with some other methods, led to the "cognitive revolution" and the eventual emergence of cognitive psychology (Cognition, p. 13)
First, the introspection movement, led by Wundt and Titchener, sought to study the mind by having each individual "introspect" and record their own
thoughts and experiences (Cognition, p. 9). This movement had participants train in the proper way to perform and document this introspection, but

evidence of the fact that people are not reacting solely to the stimulus itself, but rather the interpretation and meaning given to the stimulus by the
person's thoughts, memories, and previous experiences. Therefore, the field of behaviorism, which produced credible, reproducible data, but
completely ignored the subject's underlying motivations for behavior, was flawed in an opposite way from introspection.
The "cognitive revolution" provided a way to create a field that would combine the best parts of introspection and behaviorism, without either of their
fatal flaws. The transcendental method, developed by Immanuel Kant in the 1700s, proposed beginning with observable phenomena and working
backward to investigate why those processes may be occurring (Cognition, p. 13). By adopting this method of taking objective, observable behaviors,
and working backward to provide possible explanations for these behaviors, cognitive psychology was able to come into its own as a science.

Eric Schwitzgebel's Analysis
Eric Schwitzgebel argues that introspection is unreliable in providing trustworthy information and even going as far as unreliable of present
experiences, mainly, on the grounds that the sensations one integrates and the innate nature of oneself is largely faulty. More specifically put, that
emotions one experiences are wavering and faulty, visual experiences one draws upon can be misleading, the pain one feels cannot be precisely
located and if done so is integrated in an unreliable manner, and wrongly attributed reliance on the inner voice one consistently "deals" with. In
introspection, one does not entirely know the origin nor the idea of emotions. That is why one is truly feeling such emotions and what these emotions
are. In the question of truly knowing what emotions are, one is not fully equipped for understanding what they are. For instance, are they... Show more

The person who was doing the introspection would be fully aware of when and what stimulus would be presented to them. This ensured that the
observer was in full control of the experience. The stimulus would then be presented many times. Introspection was commonly done when the observer
was awaiting the stimulus and when they were reacting to its presentation. It was through using introspection that Wundt and his students concluded
that the sensations and feelings are what constitute the activity in our minds. They believed that the combination of or the relationship between
sensations and feelings are what creates constantly shifting psychological processing. (King et al 2009) At the end of the nineteenth century, Titchener
brought Wundt's basic ideas of psychology to America. He was responsible for translating many of Wundt's works into English as they were all in
German. Many did not now that Titchener only translated what he agreed with and choose not to translate anything he disagreed with. Titchener called
Wundt's ideas structuralism, and tried to study the structure of mental life or consciousness. His structural psychology had three aims: * to describe the
components of consciousness in basic elements, * to describe the combinations of basic elements, * to explain the connections of the elements of
consciousness to the nervous system. (New World Encyclopaedia 2008)

Positive Limitations Of Introspection
NTROSPECTION, BEHAVIORISM, AND THE COGNITIVE REVOLUTION
Introspection, or the ability to "look within", was a theory developed in the late 19th Century (Reisberg, 2016, pp. 8–9). It was a theory devised to
study the mental world pertaining to behavior. While this deep internal self–study of mental process seemed an obvious solution, time produced some
unscientific limitations. First, all though introspection could study the conscious thoughts, feelings, perceptions, etc., it had no way of studying the
unconscious workings of the mind. Ultimately, this limited the effectiveness of the research (Reisberg, 2016, p. 9). Another limitation was that people
could not read each other's minds. This meant that there was no way to measure the falsity and/or accuracy of assertions and descriptions. For example,
one could not ascertain how significant one person's headache was compared to another's because each person has their own limitations for pain.
Overall, these limitations made introspection an unfit form of research for testing hypotheses (Reisberg, 2016, p. 10).
As introspection fell, behaviorism rose. Because behaviorism focused on observable behaviors, it made more sense that this theory could be used to
test hypotheses and form data. However, psychology is about more than just observing the physical stimulus and a person's response to it. An issue that
arose out of behaviorist theory was the fact that there are many dissimilar stimuli that can mean the same

Differences Between Smalltalk And Python
Type systems
Both Smalltalk and Python are dynamically typed languages. These languages will leave the type check until run–time, in contrast with statically typed
languages that enforce types at compile–time. The method lookup also happens at run–time allowing more flexibility in manipulating objects. The two
languages have dynamically dispatched, which is message is evaluated depending on the receiver object at runtime (section 3 Code lists).
Smalltalk uses untyped variables and they must be declared before using. The reason why variables should be declared is that we can inform the
compiler to leave some memory space for variables. Python also in the same case that it has untyped variables but those do not need to be explicitly
declared. Whenever assignment happens for variables, the declaration also occurs. Since no type checks happen at compile time, the responsibility is
of programmers to ensure that variables will receive the correct kind of values. The two languages provide type conversions that will return the new
objects represent converted values.
Another small difference between Python and Smalltalk is that the former provides multimethods, functions with same name and different types of
argument. This is saying that Python ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

The Role Of Serving Others In The Grapes Of Wrath
Mahatma Ghandi said, "The best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others." By this he meant, the best way to discover more
about yourself is to serve others. However, this is, at best, a gross overstatement and, at worst, inaccurate. Serving others generally does not serve to
teach one about oneself, instead it preoccupies him in the needs of who he is serving. Introspection, considering one's actions through the objective lens
of hindsight, is, however, a better way to discover more about oneself, and thus nullifies the statement that the best way to learn more about oneself is
through helping others. Serving others does not primarily effect self–understanding, but rather a preoccupation with the needs of the... Show more

I started to revert back to my old self. Through this introspection, I realized profound and relevant truths about myself that never could have been
revealed through service. Does one learn that she prefers white cars through helping at a homeless shelter or reflecting on the colors of all her past

renowned person, Mahatma Ghandi, said, "The best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others," does not mean that it is true. In
fact, serving others does not do much to aid self–discovery: in The Grapes of Wrath, we see a generous mother feel pity, but nothing close to
enligtenment after giving to children in need. However, a better method of learning about oneself, introspection, takes a higher place, if not the highest,
on the list of ways to self–discovery, making false the statement that the best way to learn more about oneself is through service. However, though
service is not an especially effective tool in this regard though introspection is, learning more about oneself is a process that pulls from many

Reflection Of Reflection On Reflection
Four preliminary questions are useful to frame philosophical analysis of introspection. First, in what does introspection consist? In general terms,
introspection is a way to recognize, to learn or to be aware of our own current and recently past mental states and processes, and to self–attribute those
states and processes. As opposed to retrospection–the reflection of strictly past events and experiences–introspection focuses on concurrent states and
processes as they happen in our mind or occur in the stream of consciousness, and enables us to describe and report our thoughts and experiences–it
does not imply that some dose of short–term memory is not necessary for introspecting though.
However, introspection does not necessarily result in verbally reporting our mental states or processes aloud; we may generate judgments about them
and these can be reported or remain in inner speech. Henceforth, introspective judgments and reports are also called upshots or deliverances of
introspection. The distinction among introspective judgments, introspective reports, and the introspective process itself is relevant. Judgments and/or
reports may count as steps or parts of the introspective process, but are not reducible to it.
Now, we might say that the sense of awareness at stake alludes to a faculty of self–probing our mental states and processes together with our abilities
to form judgments of our states and processes, and to report them accordingly, e.g. whether a specific

Introspection Vs Behaviorism
Before cognitive psychology came to be, there were two practices that let to what is known as the cognitive revolution. These two practices are known
as introspection and behaviorism. These two practices are very different in the theory behind them as well as the problems behind them.
Introspection was performed by asking people to "'look within' to observe and record the content of our own mental lives and the sequence of our own
experiences (Cognition, p. 9)." This leads us to the biggest problem of introspection, not being a scientific way of studying the human mind. Another
limitation of introspection is that some thoughts that individuals have are unconscious which makes them unable to be studied (Cognition). Because of
these limitations, the practice of behaviorism came about. Behaviorists took the limitation of lack of scientific study to heart and decided that the mind
must be studied by observing individuals' behaviors. Behaviorism had its own limitations as well. One such limitation is that the ways people act and
feel are guided by how they interpret or understand a situation (Cognition). This led to a problem as we know that we must study the mind to
understand a human's behaviors, however we can't study it objectively. These led to the cognitive revolution ofpsychology.
One idea that was studied using methods developed during the cognitive revolution is that of working memory. Working memory is the idea that a part
of our memory is used only for thoughts we

The Limitations Of Introspection And Behaviorism

"This is because how people act is shaped by how people they perceive the situation, how they understand the stimuli, and so on," (Cognition, pg. 13).
This quote explains that studying the behaviors of the brain is somewhat of a difficult topic to study, since all individuals perceive information in their
own way. When looking to describe the limitations of introspection and behaviorism it is important that you first understand what the words
introspection and behaviorism stands for. Introspection is the ability to "observe and record the content of our own mental lives ... Show more content

As for the evidence of the working memory system, two British researches, Alan Baddley and Graham Hitch, have proposed a model in how to explain
the working memory system. They have suggested that the system contains many different parts, and that the main working part of the system is the
central executive. This central part is able to delegate tasks for the low–level "assistants" to handle, since these assistants are not able to actually
analyze a situation on their own. The articulatory rehearsal loop is one of the assistances that allows a person to remember, and is the most beneficial
in many ways. This assistant allows you to recall information that is previously stated by repetitively stating the information in our head, which is
known as subvolcalization, or silent speech. Furthermore, Baddley and Hitch's model suggest that we are able to see the existence of this working
memory through "sound–alike" errors, because our bodies rely on this rehearsal loop or memory to recall information. In a study, there was a control
group which was given a normal digit–span test. In the other group, people were asked to perform concurrent articulation when they took the test.
Although this concurrent articulation is not difficult, it does affect the use of the articulatory loop and decreases the memory. With that being said,
manipulation of a

The Influence Of The Introspection Movement

  • 1. The Influence Of The Introspection Movement The shift in thought and methodology that led to the cognitive revolution began with the introspection movement, which influenced the study of behaviorism, and, in turn, led to a completely new way of understanding how to study human behavior. Introspection is limited by the extent in which it can be studied. Because thoughts can only be understood and experienced by the individual having them, there is no way to accurately assess and study the mental events that are occurring within the mind. In an attempt to keep introspection within the realms of scientific inquiry, Wilhelm Wundt and E.B. Titchener believed that introspectors should be carefully trained to observe, assess, and report on their experiences. This was to be done with as little interpretation as possible. Still, there was no way for even the most meticulously reported experiences to be observed by others. Introspection is a tool that relies on experiencing and focusing on conscious thoughts, so another limitation involves unconscious thoughts. If you're not aware of the mental event, you can't look to it for understanding. These were the fundamental flaws with introspection as a science. These limitations guided scientists towards the cognitive revolution because it became clear that understanding mental events is important to understanding behavior, and in order to be useful to science, there needs to be testability. Behaviorism offered scientists the opportunity to gather objective data, which is something ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 2. Personal Narrative: Knowing Ourselves Through Introspection I am interested in learning more about chapter fives Knowing Ourselves through Introspection because I am always interested in learning more about myself. I enjoy reading things about my personality especially when it's right. Horoscopes, zodiac signs, blood types, genetic's, and birth order are all things that interest me just because they act as an reinforcer to why I act the way I do. So this is just another way for me to understand myself and I enjoy that. I believe that this is important because knowing oneself means that you can control yourself and become a greater part of society. Socrates one of the greatest known philosophers who question both identity and existence. He believe that without understanding yourself one would not be able to know anything (Socrates).... I am an artist and I spend most of my time in my own head so perhaps that is were I get such an interest in things about my self. While I paint I like to add pieces of things that remind myself of what I enjoy. An example of that would be that I hate the color yellow so it rarely is in any of my art I do but I like reds and blues so I am more likely to use those colors. Another example, is that I don't draw a lot of abstract things I prefer natural pretty things that have subjects such as animals, plants, landscapes, and people. Which is where individual differences really show up because what I like can be different from what others might like (Aronson Pg. 6). • 3. Internalization And Philosophical Introspection In Dorothy... Internalization and Philosophical Introspection Contradictory to my previous rubric, the second rubric that I created is one which focuses on internalization, or more specifically, philosophical introspection. Introspection is another modernist literary quality that emerged after the start of World War I. The first war had a large impact on society and that particular generation at the time, as losses were large during the war, and grew even larger with the outbreak of influenza. To The Lighthouse byVirginia Woolfand The Tunnel by Dorothy Richardson both are included in this rubric. To The Lighthouse is entirely philosophical introspection and inner turmoil. The novel is narrated in third person omniscient, therefore we are not limited to one unreliable character to recount the story. Each character in the novel had a specific personal issue that was thought over in the text. Plot–wise, nothing happened in the novel except for the passing of time, a few deaths, and the war. All of which were spoken of using less than two sentences. Contrary to the previous rubric, this modernist novel was more focused on the intrapersonal connections of the characters and their inner dialogue instead of events. In The Tunnel, the reader is faced with a strong female protagonist who arguably has just as much philosophical introspection as the characters in To The Lighthouse. Richardson utilizes Miriam's position in society to make a critique of how the modern woman at this time was ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Personal Narrative-The Introspection Of Stereotypes Following along with my nocturnal routine, I scroll past digital photos people feel important enough to put on display for the rest of us. Strategically placed untouched meals, someone's face, professional photo of a dog, photo of a physical photo of what appears to be an 80s–teenage bedroom, promotion for the new Shins album I have already preordered, professional photo of a dog. I return to the photo of the 80's teen. The caption reads "OK but look @ my mom's 1980's bedroom #tbt." Although I find this use of millennial language to be a bit distasteful, the tenderness behind a daughter presenting her access to her mother's adolescence strikes me. • 5. 2050 And Introspection By Ronald Heller The year is 2050 and introspection has taken over the world. Mind control devices are causing human beings to fight among each other. Technology has been our downfall. My name is Ronald Heller and I am one of the few human beings that have not been subject to introspection. The reason is that ninety two percent of the world has become evil. I am one of the last of the true believers. People known as true believers are immune to introspection. The fate of mankind depends on us the true believers. Introspection was believed to be what would bring peace to the human race but it was vindictive and created the RPF the organization of rehabilitation project force. The RPF is what began to manipulate human beings minds. They thought they were doing things to make things better. What really happened was that people allowed themselves to be manipulated. Everyone is frightened now, except for us the true believers. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... We are outnumbered by the RPF but we are training a resistance to fight the RPF. • 6. Affoding Introspection: An Alternative Model Of Human... The human consciousness is a critical part of life, and a well studied topic in psychology. While the exact reasons for consciousness are still unknown, the effects of a consciousness have been researched extensively. I've always been interested in consciousness and the evolution from just practicality to a deeper level of feeling and why self awareness developed. Consciousness plays a key role in psychology, as being self aware allows for critical thinking as well as fast learning. Affording Introspection: An Alternative Model of Inner Awareness by Tom McClelland provides a look at phenomenology, or the study of consciousness in relation to experience, as well as the Ubiquity of Inner Awareness thesis, the proof in favor of it, and the skeptical ... • 7. Are Mental States To Neurobiological States? Are Mental States Irreducible To Neurobiological States? Today I'll be discussing Patricia Smith Churchland's Are Mental States Irreducible to Neurobiological States. According to The Norton Introduction to Philosophy, "[Churchland] is known for her work connecting neuroscience and traditional philosophical topics such as consciousness, the self, free will and ethics" (T.N.I.P, 424). Terms needed to understand the material: 1.Qualia– also known as "qualitative character of experiences, sensations, [and] feelings..." (Churchland, 1). 2.Introspective– "observation or examination of ones own mental and emotional state"(Dictionary.com) Churchland begins her article by explaining Thomas Nagel belief of having a point of view. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Although she has trouble believing in the second premise that brain states are not knowable by introspection. This brings the main argument "are mental states identical to brain states". Churchland breaks it down to this: if mental states are identical all to brain states then when you observe you mental states you are also observing the brain state which is identical. Churchland states, " I may not describe my mental state as a brain state but whether I do depends on what information I have about the brain, not upon whether the mental state really is identical to some brain state . The identity can be a fact about the world independently of my knowledge that is a fact about the world" (Churchland, 2).She gives the following example " Jones swallows an aspirin, he thereby swallows acetylsalicylic acid, whether or not he thought" in other words "identities may obtain even when we have not discovered that they do"(Churchland, 2). Lastly, I'lol be discussing Churchland 's interpretation of Frank Jackson's Argument: Knowing our sensations. Churchland explains Jacksons argument as "showing the differences between knowing our states via introspection and knowing via non–introspective means are of such nature as to constitute grounds for denying the reducibility of psychology to neuroscience" (Churchland, 4). • 8. Review Of ' Dennett 's ' Quining Qualia ' Paper 1 – Question 3: Dennett's "Quining Qualia" Daniel Dennett looks to quine qualia, or completely disprove their existence, in "Quining Qualia." He is successful in creating a theoretical framework by which many intuitive arguments for qualia can be struck down. Because of his success, an argument from introspection is difficult to make; Dennett seems to successfully refute many of the arguments given by intuition or folk psychology. I will adopt Eugene Park's criticism in critiquing Dennett, showing that an argument from introspection can provide some insight into how qualia might exist. Park argues that relying on memory comparison is incomplete, and unfairly eliminates direct apprehensibility. Introduction In "Quining Qualia," ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This makes qualia inherently private. The fourth and last quality is direct apprehensibility to consciousness. This describes the fact that we know everything about our own qualia, and we can easily access all of its properties. Dennett explains that because qualia are "properties of my experiences," they therefore must be accessible to one's conscious states (229). The coffee–test case: Intuition pump 7 – Chase and Sanborn Dennett uses the seventh intuition pump to explore the relationship between qualia and reactive attitudes to those qualia. The situation involves two coffee tasters who work for Maxwell House, ensuring that each batch is of consistent quality. After six years of tastings, both Chase and Sanborn declare that they used to like thetaste of the coffee, but that this is no longer the case. Chase says that he thinks that the coffee tastes the same as it did six years ago, but that he has become a more "sophisticated" coffee drinker and his more unfavorable reaction (or reactive attitude) towards the coffee has decreased his enjoyment of it. Sanborn, however, does not like the coffee because he says his taste buds have changed, and now the coffee tastes worse than before. Sanborn claims that his taste–qualia have changed, not his reactive attitude towards the coffee. It is difficult, however, to discern whether Chase and Sanborn are actually correct in ... • 10. Functionalism: A Psychological Analysis Functionalism is the philosophy of science to which Behaviourism belongs too. According to Farrell, p.g. 364 "For functionalists, mental states had to be understood in terms of the functions that they performed, and these functions were a matter of allowing an organism to survive in its environment." Behaviourism was founded upon this philosophy and focused on observable behaviour. This paper will examine how behaviourism was able to stand up to the strict philosophy of science of functionalism and the reasons it did not prevent the fall of behaviourism. Edward Lee Thorndike was one of the earliest Behaviourists. At the time, introspection was used to study mental states and consciousness. Thorndike rejected the use of introspection for three reasons. Thorndike believed that studying objective behaviour could expand the scope of psychology. Secondly, mental states can be studied by other means, introspection as a superior form of investigation is based on misconception because mental states can be studied objectively. Lastly, consciousness is linked to behaviour and actions as such, it can only be studied through behaviour (Farrell 2014 p.g. 367). Behaviourism, moved away from the traditional view of divisions of dichotomies of mental states as being separated into body/mind, thought/action (Farrell 2014 p.g. 346). • 11. Introspection Essay The dictionary describes introspection as the examination or observation of one's own mental and emotional processes. Kevin Woods stated, "Introspection are all about getting to know yourself at the core, uncovering your values and then deciding for yourself what's the best action to take." Your emotions and feelings play a major role in why we do things. If we listen to our feelings then we can find more things about us that we didn't know. This could benefit us and help us appreciate more things and live but also may make us overthink some times. Karl Perera mentioned, "Introspection is good in small doses. If you are feeling very tired or have no energy and can't find a solution as things keep rolling through your mind over and over then it is time to stop." Overall, everyone connects with things differently; it is interesting to notice how you feel in certain situations. I recently just lost a ring that was given to me a couple years ago. I was devastated and felt irresponsible. I have always wanted a Pandora Ring so this devastation led me to get one. I did a little research to figure which one I wanted on the Pandora website. Salinger's The Catcher in the Rye are two novels in which characters reflect on their attitudes and experiences as a source of emotional growth and maturity. Salinger and Toews show the importance of this reflection through the evolution of their characters' – Holden Caulfield and Nomi Nickel – similar attitudes towards their schools, communities, and lives. Though Nomi and Holden both do poorly in school for various reasons, Nomi overcomes her obstacles by working to identify the source of them. Authors can investigate themselves using the introspection of self or they can examine their characters. Throughout history, there is a shift in introspection. The works of Augustine, Dante and Boccaccio reveal the shift from self–examination to the examination of characters. Confessions is regarded as the first ancient autobiography. Augustine in this work, reveals not only his Christian spirit and beliefs but his regrets from his early life (902). According to the Middle Ages definition of a comedy, it must have a narrative structure that begins in misery and ends in happiness, it should contain a range of styles and people and focus on people's private and inward lives(1211). By following this structure he creates not only a perfect comedy but a perfect mix of introspections. Dante creates this perfect mix through many different techniques. Similarly to Augustine to fulfill his self–reflection, he makes himself the main character so that readers get to discover Dante himself and his Christian spirit. In Canto I of Inferno, Dante the Pilgrim has wandered off the path and wakes up in a dark wood. He says "How hard it is to tell what is was like,/this wood of wilderness, savage and stubborn/(the thought of which brings back all of my old fears)"(1214, lines 4–6). While this passage could be using Dante just to make readers relate more to him being in this dark wood, the insertion of "which brings back all of my old fears" opens up the author's character or the character he wants to portray of himself. Dante also includes an introspection of his characters which in turn scrutinize society. In Canto XIX, Dante meets Pope Nicholas III. The Pope also predicts that Pope Clement V would soon in his circle of hell. It says "But actually I was the she–bears's son,/so greedy to advance my cubs, that wealth/ I pocketed in life, and here, myself...I, in my turn, shall join the rest below/ as soon as he comes, the one I thought you were" (1273, lines 70–72,76–77). Physician Qualities And Introspection Physician Qualities and Introspection The physician speakers identified many traits of a good physician, including responsible, empathetic, hard–working, trustworthy, and the list goes on. When looking at all of these characteristics, it is easy to think that a physician is essentially an ideal and well–rounded person who is intelligent and has good morals. However, we have been taught at a young age that nobody is perfect, so are physicians an exception? I think while being a pre–med student, it is easy to get lost in the idea of a physician and forget that they are people with strengths and weaknesses too. Despite this, after listening to all the speakers, I've noticed a few common characteristics of a good physician, which are dedicated, compassionate, and collaborative. • 15. Limitations Of Introspection And Behaviorism In the beginning of the chapter, some limitations and shortcomings of introspection and behaviorism are explained and illustrated as reasons for the occurance of the "cognitive revolution." During the late nineteenth century, Wilhelm Wundt and Edward Bradford Titchener decided that the only way to study thoughts was through introspection, or to look within oneself to study the topic of our mental lives. The primary limitation of this method lies in its nature. When studying or researching oneself, there is not another party to test the claims and perform the scientific method to prove or disprove findings. "Science" that is performed by one individual and based on one individual is simply anecdotal and opinionated. Additionally, there is no way to "introspect" on one's unconscious self, which is a huge influence on decision making and a person's mental makeup as whole. Due to these limitations of introspection as a research tool, many psychologists abandoned it completely on the basis that psychology would never be a science, should it progress in this manner (Cognition, pg. 9). By the first half of the twentieth century, behaviorist theory started to control the field of psychology. The study of behaviors could yield testable claims due its objective data that could be recorded by observing another human's behaviors. The stimuli that happens in the environment around people is also objective data that could be recorded and manipulated for different tests and experiments. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 16. Limitations Of Cognitive Psychology Cognitive psychology is an important field because it studies everything that makes up who a person is, based on what they know, think, and feel (Cognition, pg. 3). Understanding cognitive psychology can help people make better decisions and help recognize how people accomplish great things (Cognition, pg. 4). For example, if a person is having a hard time focusing in class and they discover when the chatty people behind them do not show up they take better notes, than it is beneficial for them to cognitively decide to sit somewhere else. This example shows how understanding cognitive psychology can allow someone to get to know himself or herself better, therefore making better personal decisions. Getting a basic understanding of cognitive psychology involves four fundamental concepts: the intrinsic limitations of introspection and behaviorism, working memory, the role of the amygdala, and the structure of a neuron and synapse. The concept of cognitive psychology came about in the 1950s, discovered by two psychologists named Wilhelm Wundt and Edward Titchener ( Cognition, pg. 8). It was previously thought that psychology could not study the world directly, but these two researchers founded the idea of introspection, meaning to observe and record our own mental lives (Cognition, pg. 9). Although introspection seemed like an ingenious way to directly study people, it turned out to have a couple intrinsic limitations. First, it did not account for unconscious thoughts. For ... Only through the intertextual re–examination of the Shakespearean text itself via the interjection of genre and the reassigning of dialogue, within the metatheatre, is the true feminist representation of the female Shakespearian characters unveiled from behind the patriarchal preconceptions. In the text, "How to Tell a True War Story" Tim O'Brien expresses his thoughts about the true war story and how the war story is changed according to the person who tells it. Jon Krakauer illustrates Chris McCandless's journey into the Alaskan wilderness and reasons for McCandless's gruesome death in an isolated place, in his book "Into the Wild." O'Brien relates introspection and a soldier's war story by saying that the war story portrays the feelings of a soldier. A soldier's war story is not the exact war story; it is the illustration of that particular soldier's perception. Narrating a war story is not like inundating others with facts and numbers however, it is about the introspection of a soldier, because that soldier determines... As an author, O'Brien explains feelings of one of his readers in this way "She'll explain that as a rule she hates war stories; she can't understand why people want to wallow in all the blood and gore" (449). This reader views a war story as inhumane, and it conveys the cruelty of blood and death. This is an easy conclusion, but it is also trivial. Most obvious part of a war story is numbers and facts regarding the casualties, and it will absorb the whole attention of a person. It will create a thought that war stories are always savage. If that person never attempts to see the inconspicuous part of the war story, it never comes to brink. Then the false conclusion of the war story persists forever. This false conclusion is created due to the ambiguity that existed in perceiving an experience. The reason for this ambiguity is superficial thoughts about that experience. To discover more about McCandless, Krakauer not only travels to wilderness and questions himself but also gathers information about McCandless from people who knew him. Krakauer shares the view of an Alaskan correspondent, which says "The scope of his self–styled adventure was so small as to ring pathetic ... Only one word for the guy: incompetent" (358). However, I believe that our beliefs, emotions, thoughts, and temperament remain relatively stagnant so that introspection is simply observing out preexisting mental makeup that remains the same. For example, when I have to complete a homework assignment I truly feel unexcited to complete the assignment. Through introspection, I learned I feel this way towards homework and it remains constant. This is an observation, the same as if I were to observe my hair blows in the wind. Before I begin my argument I want to point out that the word "psychology" is the combination of two terms – study (ology) and soul (psyche), or mind. The derivation of the word from Latin gives it this clear and obvious meaning: The study of the soul or mind. I believe that Behaviourists such as Watson wished to alter the meaning of the word ' psychology' because it was not sufficient or capable of answering the metaphysical questions such as "what is the mind?" and "what is consciousness?" They believed that the discipline could only be effective or 'scientific' if every hypothetical question could be operationalized and therefore quantified, ... Watson, as a leading behaviourist of the day advocated for complete rejection of mental phenomena and the concept of consciousness had no place in science b/c mental phenomena cannot be directly observable. So Watson was suggesting that psychology can only be defined as a science if it denies the mind, whaa?! I suggest advocates for this position would instead be more comfortable if they left "Psych"ology to its rightful place as the study of the human mind, and therefore human nature, and instead form a science called Behaviourology. But really, what is the point of experimenting and making observations if you don't further attempt to determine WHY the observed behaviour occurs? They organise and relate information from past experiences to represent an individual's construal of different objects and events (Eysenck & Keane, 2015). Similar cognitive networks about oneself are self–schemas. According to Markus (1977) these guide self–related actions and behaviour, and form self–concept. This knowledge is important for improving oneself, building self–esteem, and striving for success (Suls & Wheeler, 2011). The initial development of schemas and self–awareness is thought to occur in childhood; detailed in Piaget's Stage Theory (Piaget, 1976). Rather than exploring child cognitive development, this essay will discuss some of the theories of individual self–schema development and some ways they are maintained under threat. Self–Discrepancy Theory The first approach to self–schema development we will evaluate is Self–Discrepancy Theory (SDT) (Higgins, 1987). In this theory self–schemas develop to drive the actual self (who somebody is now) towards the ideal self (who somebody wants to be) and the ought self (who somebody should be according to others). Reflected appraisals build a network of the actual self, and this knowledge is used to move towards the ideal and ought selves. • 24. Limitations Of Introspection And Behaviorism From Chapter 1: What were the intrinsic limitations of introspection and behaviorism, and how did these limitations lead to the "cognitive revolution"? Introspection requires a subject to delve deep into their own mind, and report on that externally. They must be trained to be able to be objective in all their observations, including their own thoughts (Cognition, pg. 9). While this seems to be something that would be incredibly useful, the first limitation is in unconscious thoughts. There are many processes that happen in a human's mind "behind the scenes" that cannot be experienced or observed by the subject. The second limitation lies in the scientific method. An experience happening inside a subject's head cannot be replicated, tested, or compared. There is no way to disprove a subject's claims on pain, thought processes, or anything else (Cognition, pg. 10). Behaviorism relies on behaviors that can be observed. In recording behavior on a regular basis, a subject's learning history can be recorded, leading to more knowledge on how their decisions are made. The limitation lies in the solution. If only behavior can be observed, a subject's interpretation, which guides the behavior, cannot (Cognition, pg. 12). A subject's understanding of a situation changes the situation. Someone can ask for salt in a myriad of ways, and it will be interpreted correctly by most people (Cognition, pg. 13). Critically evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of introspection as a method for investigating psychological phenomenon Introspection has an incredibly large history with the first record of it being used going right back to the great Greek philosophers such as Plato and Aristotle, however this was in a philosophical sense about discovering oneself (Boring, E. G. 1953) which lead to the scientific methodology being born in the laboratory of arguably the father of psychology Wilhelm Wundt who used the method to measure peoples internal thought processes when presented with various stimuli in which the subject would self–perceive their internal thought processes and describe them to the experimenter. An example of this would be to present the subject with an object such as a pencil or odour and to describe it and their stream of consciousness as a result of this. Whereas Edward Titchener expanded this somewhat to break down the stream of consciousness to find its component parts and so as such when having to describe the item they could not say the item as that was to make a stimulus error and did not achieve anything and instead had to describe it in individual parts such as length, colour, shape and other such characteristics of the item however even these were frowned upon with more emphasis being put on the statements such as it is causing feelings of sorrow and tension within my body (Boring, E. G. 1953). However the definition of this process seems to be somewhat fluid ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Psychology, as the scientific study of behavioural developments, can be traced back to when philosophy was the leading way of thinking. However, once people began to apply experimental methods to better understand the complex nature of behaviour, psychology became increasingly acknowledged and documented. This essay will focus on the significant figures, such as Wilhelm Wundt, William James and John Watson, which contributed to the history of the study of psychology. It will aim to outline the main factors that are responsible for the change from the introspective method to behaviourism. Fundamentally concentrating on the differing nature of the two; from examining our own thoughts and how they affect others to investigating more observable behaviour in response to a stimulus. Furthermore, this essay will endeavour to critically evaluate why behaviourism has been favoured in America looking at the strengths and limitations of the two methods to come to an informed conclusion supporting the superiority of a behaviourist approach. These objectives will be achieved by using psychological research where appropriate. The formal history of modern psychology dates to 1879. • 28. Perception, Introspection, Reason And Memory Essay There are four different sources of knowledge: perception, introspection, reason and memory. All our knowledge roots from our perception. Perception is the way humans sense the world outside the body. We perceive through our five senses: see, hear, smell, taste, and touch. Humans gain knowledge through experiences and experience through perception. Usually we can trust our senses to perceive our surroundings effectively but there are times we misperceive. Illusions, hallucinations or impediments of the accurate flow of information to our senses are examples of misperceptions. For example if someone hits their head causing their vision to blur or impedes them from effectively processing what occurring around them, then they shouldn't trust their senses. Another example would be an anxiety attack causing a signal of threat to the brain also preventing the person from correctly processing their surroundings. If nothing can prove we are misperceiving then we have good reason to be believe our senses. Introspection is a source of knowledge about our mental states. Introspection is the way humans examine and observe their own mental and emotional states. Even though usually accurate, sometimes the beliefs we form through introspection can be incorrect. Being in a dispositional mental state can cause false beliefs about our mental states. However, their flaws in studying psychology were on opposite sides of the same coin. The reconciliation of these two flawed fields, along with some other methods, led to the "cognitive revolution" and the eventual emergence of cognitive psychology (Cognition, p. 13) First, the introspection movement, led by Wundt and Titchener, sought to study the mind by having each individual "introspect" and record their own thoughts and experiences (Cognition, p. 9). This provides evidence of the fact that people are not reacting solely to the stimulus itself, but rather the interpretation and meaning given to the stimulus by the person's thoughts, memories, and previous experiences. Therefore, the field of behaviorism, which produced credible, reproducible data, but completely ignored the subject's underlying motivations for behavior, was flawed in an opposite way from introspection. The "cognitive revolution" provided a way to create a field that would combine the best parts of introspection and behaviorism, without either of their fatal flaws. The transcendental method, developed by Immanuel Kant in the 1700s, proposed beginning with observable phenomena and working backward to investigate why those processes may be occurring (Cognition, p. 13). By adopting this method of taking objective, observable behaviors, and working backward to provide possible explanations for these behaviors, cognitive psychology was able to come into its own as a science. • 33. Positive Limitations Of Introspection NTROSPECTION, BEHAVIORISM, AND THE COGNITIVE REVOLUTION Introspection, or the ability to "look within", was a theory developed in the late 19th Century (Reisberg, 2016, pp. 8–9). It was a theory devised to study the mental world pertaining to behavior. While this deep internal self–study of mental process seemed an obvious solution, time produced some unscientific limitations. First, all though introspection could study the conscious thoughts, feelings, perceptions, etc., it had no way of studying the unconscious workings of the mind. Ultimately, this limited the effectiveness of the research (Reisberg, 2016, p. 9). Another limitation was that people could not read each other's minds. This meant that there was no way to measure the falsity and/or accuracy of assertions and descriptions. For example, one could not ascertain how significant one person's headache was compared to another's because each person has their own limitations for pain. Overall, these limitations made introspection an unfit form of research for testing hypotheses (Reisberg, 2016, p. 10). As introspection fell, behaviorism rose. Because behaviorism focused on observable behaviors, it made more sense that this theory could be used to test hypotheses and form data. However, psychology is about more than just observing the physical stimulus and a person's response to it. This particular career field also holds several key components that suit my ideal job description. The conventional perception of a lawyer usually entails an image similar to that of Casey Novak from Law of Order: SVU. However, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 35. Differences Between Smalltalk And Python Type systems Both Smalltalk and Python are dynamically typed languages. These languages will leave the type check until run–time, in contrast with statically typed languages that enforce types at compile–time. The method lookup also happens at run–time allowing more flexibility in manipulating objects. The two languages have dynamically dispatched, which is message is evaluated depending on the receiver object at runtime (section 3 Code lists). Smalltalk uses untyped variables and they must be declared before using. The reason why variables should be declared is that we can inform the compiler to leave some memory space for variables. Python also in the same case that it has untyped variables but those do not need to be explicitly declared. Whenever assignment happens for variables, the declaration also occurs. Since no type checks happen at compile time, the responsibility is of programmers to ensure that variables will receive the correct kind of values. The two languages provide type conversions that will return the new objects represent converted values. Another small difference between Python and Smalltalk is that the former provides multimethods, functions with same name and different types of argument. This is saying that Python ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Python provides some built–in functions for doing introspection such as type(), isinstance(), callable(), and getattr(). The dir() function is one of the most important function when doing introspection since it gives a list of attributes and methods in the inspected object. However, Python also allows programmers to modify the inner structure of objects at runtime. The inner structure of an object can be changed due to the fact that in its dictionary the pointers to a field can be reassigned at runtime. For example (section 5 Code lists), we can add new function intro() to ref, can modify the method message(), and delete an attribute at ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 36. The Role Of Serving Others In The Grapes Of Wrath Mahatma Ghandi said, "The best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others." By this he meant, the best way to discover more about yourself is to serve others. However, this is, at best, a gross overstatement and, at worst, inaccurate. Serving others generally does not serve to teach one about oneself, instead it preoccupies him in the needs of who he is serving. Introspection, considering one's actions through the objective lens of hindsight, is, however, a better way to discover more about oneself, and thus nullifies the statement that the best way to learn more about oneself is through helping others. Serving others does not primarily effect self–understanding, but rather a preoccupation with the needs of the... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... I started to revert back to my old self. Through this introspection, I realized profound and relevant truths about myself that never could have been revealed through service. Does one learn that she prefers white cars through helping at a homeless shelter or reflecting on the colors of all her past cars? Serving others cannot be the best way to learn more about oneself because introspection is clearly superior in this regard. Just because a renowned person, Mahatma Ghandi, said, "The best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others," does not mean that it is true. In fact, serving others does not do much to aid self–discovery: in The Grapes of Wrath, we see a generous mother feel pity, but nothing close to enligtenment after giving to children in need. However, a better method of learning about oneself, introspection, takes a higher place, if not the highest, on the list of ways to self–discovery, making false the statement that the best way to learn more about oneself is through service. However, though service is not an especially effective tool in this regard though introspection is, learning more about oneself is a process that pulls from many ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 37. Reflection Of Reflection On Reflection Four preliminary questions are useful to frame philosophical analysis of introspection. First, in what does introspection consist? In general terms, introspection is a way to recognize, to learn or to be aware of our own current and recently past mental states and processes, and to self–attribute those states and processes. As opposed to retrospection–the reflection of strictly past events and experiences–introspection focuses on concurrent states and processes as they happen in our mind or occur in the stream of consciousness, and enables us to describe and report our thoughts and experiences–it does not imply that some dose of short–term memory is not necessary for introspecting though. However, introspection does not necessarily result in verbally reporting our mental states or processes aloud; we may generate judgments about them and these can be reported or remain in inner speech. Henceforth, introspective judgments and reports are also called upshots or deliverances of introspection. The distinction among introspective judgments, introspective reports, and the introspective process itself is relevant. Judgments and/or reports may count as steps or parts of the introspective process, but are not reducible to it. Now, we might say that the sense of awareness at stake alludes to a faculty of self–probing our mental states and processes together with our abilities to form judgments of our states and processes, and to report them accordingly, e.g. whether a specific ... • 38. Introspection Vs Behaviorism Before cognitive psychology came to be, there were two practices that let to what is known as the cognitive revolution. These two practices are known as introspection and behaviorism. These two practices are very different in the theory behind them as well as the problems behind them. Introspection was performed by asking people to "'look within' to observe and record the content of our own mental lives and the sequence of our own experiences (Cognition, p. 9)." This leads us to the biggest problem of introspection, not being a scientific way of studying the human mind. Another limitation of introspection is that some thoughts that individuals have are unconscious which makes them unable to be studied (Cognition). Because of these limitations, the practice of behaviorism came about. Behaviorists took the limitation of lack of scientific study to heart and decided that the mind must be studied by observing individuals' behaviors. Behaviorism had its own limitations as well. One such limitation is that the ways people act and feel are guided by how they interpret or understand a situation (Cognition). This led to a problem as we know that we must study the mind to understand a human's behaviors, however we can't study it objectively. These led to the cognitive revolution ofpsychology. One idea that was studied using methods developed during the cognitive revolution is that of working memory. Working memory is the idea that a part of our memory is used only for thoughts we ... • 39. The Limitations Of Introspection And Behaviorism Paper Assignment #1 From Chapter 1: What were the intrinsic limitations of introspection and behaviorism, and how did these limitations lead to the "cognitive revolution"? "This is because how people act is shaped by how people they perceive the situation, how they understand the stimuli, and so on," (Cognition, pg. 13). This quote explains that studying the behaviors of the brain is somewhat of a difficult topic to study, since all individuals perceive information in their own way. When looking to describe the limitations of introspection and behaviorism it is important that you first understand what the words introspection and behaviorism stands for. Introspection is the ability to "observe and record the content of our own mental lives ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... As for the evidence of the working memory system, two British researches, Alan Baddley and Graham Hitch, have proposed a model in how to explain the working memory system. They have suggested that the system contains many different parts, and that the main working part of the system is the central executive. This central part is able to delegate tasks for the low–level "assistants" to handle, since these assistants are not able to actually analyze a situation on their own. The articulatory rehearsal loop is one of the assistances that allows a person to remember, and is the most beneficial in many ways. This assistant allows you to recall information that is previously stated by repetitively stating the information in our head, which is known as subvolcalization, or silent speech. Furthermore, Baddley and Hitch's model suggest that we are able to see the existence of this working memory through "sound–alike" errors, because our bodies rely on this rehearsal loop or memory to recall information. In a study, there was a control group which was given a normal digit–span test. In the other group, people were asked to perform concurrent articulation when they took the test. Although this concurrent articulation is not difficult, it does affect the use of the articulatory loop and decreases the memory. With that being said, manipulation of a ...
