Plot:
Book 1 The story starts out in medias res, or in the middle of things. The Gods (except Poseidon)
gather on Olympus and we learn that Odysseus is still on Calypso's island and that his kingdom is
being run over by suitors asking for Penelope's hand. Athena asks to help Odysseus and his son,
Telemachus. She later visits Telemachus who decides to visit other kingdoms to seek word of his
father.
Book 2 Telemachus calls an assembly of the elders, and begins to step into his father's legacy. He
then gives a speech, calling them out on letting their sons take over Odysseus's household, using his
supplies and courting his wife. Telemachus calls the gods to deliver punishment, and Zeus sends
him a sign to confirm his words. Telemachus then secretly sets sail to visit other kings for word of
his father.
Book 3 Telemachus visits Pylos, where he meets King Nestor and speaks during a ceremony for
Poseidon. After the feast Nestor tells him how Agamemnon and Menelaus had a disagreement and

He faced many tough challenges on his journey home, but he overcame them by not being scared in
the face of danger. When their ship came upon Scylla and Charybdis he was ready to face the two

The term "dynamic" is often used in literature to describe a character who changes drastically from
one point in the story to another. When reading "The Odyssey" an epic poem by Homer, we see that
our protagonist, Odysseus, changes throughout the course of the novel. This essay will argue how he
changes, and also what changes him, such as his travels, his relationships, and how fate and the
Greek gods affect and change him.
From the start of the novel, we find Odysseus on the far off island of Ogygia with the goddess
Calypso, this is ten years after he had initially left to go and fight in the Trojan way. Odysseus
leaves this place to go to the Island of the Phaecians, but has trouble on his way and is humbled
when he is almost killed by Posiedon, god of the sea. Since we are seeing the end of his journey at

We know that Odysseus has had problems with the god of the sea Poseidon, as with his son the
Cyclops. When Polyphemus eats two of Odysseus's men, "He knocked them dead like pups." (Page
220, Homer) the crew knows that he is trouble. Odysseus gets the giant drunk, and when the cyclops
asks Odysseus what his name is, he says that he is "Nobody". The men shove a sharpened stick into

Have you ever wondered how people would describe a leader? While Odysseus showed many
characteristics that a leader should show, he also shows many that a leader shouldn't. Odysseus is
the leader of the Trojan army, who goes on a journey to get back home to Ithaca after winning the
Trojan war, to see his wife, Penelope and his son Telemachus again. During his journey Odysseus is
told that he will be the only survivor out of hundreds of his crew members. However, Odysseus
neglects to tell this information to his crew with the worry of his crew wanting to end their journey.
You would think that a leader who puts his team through dangerous events would be affected as
well, and would choose the option the go down with his crew, and to not choose to be the only one
who survives. While many people describe Odysseus as a loyal, and honest leader, he makes many
poor decisions that prove this otherwise. Some may say that Odysseus didn't share this information
for the sake that they would freak out, and not try to get home at all.
First of all, Odysseus sailed to the land of the cyclopes where he was hoping to find food. Odysseus

Odysseus from Hero to Villain One of the more famous characters of the ancient Greeks, Odysseus,
has been written about for millennia. Homer composed an epic poem entirely about him. Dante
wrote about Odysseus while describing his journey through the afterlife in Inferno. These two
writers, though describing the same man, portray him in different lights – Homer lauding him as a
valiant hero and Dante condemning him to burn for eternity. Each portrayal is a product of the
different times in which the two authors lived. Through how the two authors abbreviate, augment,

Whereas Homer's Odysseus receives a seat of honor at the table of a foreign king, Dante's spends
eternity burning in cramped quarters.
In each portrayal of Odysseus, the two differ not only in how he is viewed, but what the reader gets
to view about him. Curiously absent from the Odyssey is the account of how the Trojan War really
ends. Homer had already dedicated one epic to the War, and then tells the return from it in this epic,
but does not give the reader the closure of explaining how it ended. An obvious reason is how the
deed of capturing the city with the Trojan Horse was less than heroic. Homer valued the in–your–
face toughness of the andres of the ancient world, and in his epics spares no detail in describing
many Greeks and Trojans to paint them as he–men. His failure to include the fall of Troy in the
Odyssey is no accident, and stems from the fact that the strategy by which it occurred runs counter
to the values of classical heroism. In Homer's Greece, a real man would not have to trick his
enemies to defeat them. The omission is a concession by Homer to admit that Odysseus was not
nearly heroic as Achilles and that there is no virtue in dishonesty.
While Homer brushes the fall of Troy under the rug, Dante harps on it to the extent that the Horse
becomes the reason Odysseus burns in one of the deepest parts of Hell.

In classical literature, heroes are normal people that have a certain trait or quality that distinguishes
them from everyone else. In The Odyssey, Odysseus captivates the audience with his cleverness,
heroism, and cunning, but away at Ithaca lies a dormant neglected, and powerful character,
Penelope. Penelope isn't the classical hero, she does not slay great beasts or liberate cities, but in her
own right, she proved to be equal, if not greater than the great Odysseus. Through her cunning,
virtue, loyalty, and vigilance. Penelope established herself as not just a counterpart, but a greater
character than the hero himself.
There are several traits and qualities that made Odysseus the character and hero he is and because of
his circumstances, he could put those on display. In his dilemma with Polyphemus, he had to use his
cleverness and intelligence to trick cyclops so he could escape from the cave. He also maintained
vigilance. After Circe warned him, in book 12, that if he hoped to survive he would have to sacrifice
some of his men he scoffed at the idea and instead tried to save and protect them on. He failed of
course, but despite his shortcomings, it is very commendable because he very well could have
simply saved himself, but he shows strong character as he tried to maintain a certain level of
vigilance. Furthermore, Odysseus was virtuous and loyal to an extent. During his journey, he ran
into two seductresses', Circe and Kalypso, both of which he had an affair with.

Physical strength had also been blessed upon Odysseus, which allowed him to greatly influence the
war. Nevertheless, it was Odysseus smart mind that helped the Greeks conquer Troy with the Trojan
horse, not as much as his physical strength. These are only some of Odysseus many strengths.
Odysseus's natural tendency under pressure is to think his plan through and analyze the
circumstance quickly and accurately. For example, when he and his men were stuck in the Cyclops
cave, the crew picked up their swords and were ready to fight, yet wise Odysseus remained calm
and told them to lower their weapons, for who would roll away the giant stone doorway if they
killed him? Instead they got him into a drunken stupor and gouged his eye out. Successfully their
plan worked and they safely made it out of the deadly cave. Another situation in which Odysseus
remained calm was when he had to endure watching the horrible suitors mistreat his house, family,
and world. He lived by the rule that there is always a certain time and place for anger. Nonetheless,
Odysseus's natural tendency under pressure is to remain calm, cool, and collected.

Delusional In Odysseus
Why does Odysseus see himself in those delusions? In my perspective, Odysseus, the ruler of Ithaca
and a Greek ruler of Troy, is such a character that does not seem as delusional as Ajax, yet there are
some characteristics within him, which consequently make him view himself as delusional.
Unfortunately, completing this question thoroughly was quite difficult, as Odysseus did not provide
many statements. Nonetheless, to begin with, in comparison to Ajax, this ruler does not allow his
feelings of hatred over power his conscience, as despite the fact that he knew of Ajax's motive to
destroy him, he remained quite calm. Specifically, in the text, Odysseus exclaims to Athena, "I am
circling round for signs of my enemy, Ajax, the shield bearer. He is the man I have been tracking, no
one else. Last night he carried out an unimaginable crime," yet he has not embarked on drastic
measures to compromise Ajax's safety and being. (Dutta, 3) Moreover, I was not able to find
evidence to prove that Odysseus is per say delusional, rather the fact, that he is obscure and battles
with his own emotions. To begin with, when Athena was allowing for Ajax to be present in front of

Empathy In The Odysseus
Empathy in the odyssey We often think that we are a caring and kind person but when we become
tired, stressed, or rushed all empathy we have can seem to vanish. We start to put our own needs
first and others second. But what if we weren't always like this? The odyssey is a perfect example of
what happens when we don't have empathy for others. In book 9 Odysseus and Polyphemus fail to
understand each other leading to some unfortunate results. Polyphemus shows almost no empathy in
his interaction with Odysseus but he shows even less, showing that without empathy pain is
inevitable. Odysseus first displays a great lack of empathy for the cyclops when comparing how
different his lifestyle is to Polyphemus'. For example when describing how the Polyphemus lives he
says in disgust, "He was quite unlike any man who eats bread, more like some wooded peak in the
high hills, standing out alone apart from the others."(9.190–192) It is apparent from this quote that
Odysseus does not respect those who work on their own. He thinks that Polyphemus is uncivilized
and a lesser being just because his lifestyle is different from that of Odysseus'. In addition Odysseus
distances himself from the cyclops by comparing their size, describing the cyclops as, "so huge he
cannot possibly be man". Rather than trying to find similarities between himself and the cyclops he

Odysseus Downfall
By putting his men in constant danger, resulting in all of his men dying, Odysseus demonstrates the
hallmark of a dreadful leader. In the episode The Cyclops, Odysseus leads his men into the cave of
polyphemus looking for a fight, because polyphemus is the child of Poseidon. In the process of
looking for a fight he loses quite a few men to the Cyclops, and after escaping continues to egg
polyphemus on by yelling in triumph at the Cyclops. Which almost leads to the crews demise. After
the Cyclops defeat Odysseus boasts, "' O Cyclops! Would you feast on my companions?... How do
you like the beating we gave you, you damned cannibal?" (The Cyclops. 476). This demonstrates
Odysseus being a dreadful leader because he puts his men into the danger of being killed by the
Cyclops, and risking their lives by proudly boasting to Polyphemus after himself and the crew have

The narrator speaks to the reader,"Odysseus does not tell his men of Circe's last prophecy––that he
will be the only survivor of their long journey" (The Sirens; Scylla; and Charybdis. 715). This is

will die on their journey, but he does not share this information nor does he try to protect his men;

Odysseus had the idea to get Polyphemus drunk. Polyphemus then asked the name of Odysseus and
he said his name is Nohbdy. This would help them escape because they would then blind the
Cyclops, and he would have in his mind that Nohbdy blinded him. This shows that Odysseus is

clever because with the beeswax on their ears they would not be able to fully hear the singing voices
of the sirens. Odysseus and his crew will not be faced with temptation because of this ear protection.
However Odysseus did not have this ear protection, but he was tied up which shows his cleverness
as well. Also, he asked his crew to untie him while the sirens were singing, which shows Odysseus
was tempted and might have died if he was not clever beforehand.

how heroic and brave he was. He was an adventurous character, who had his mind set on what he

When Odysseus left for the Trojan War, he had to leave his wife Penelope, his son Telemachus, and
his parents. Odysseus has a very strong bond with his wife that could never be broken. Penelope and

Reflection Of Odysseus
Trying to decipher a person is a difficult task, perhaps impossible. We can, however, observe their
actions, their experiences and their resemblance to other people to make some progress in
comprehending them. Deciphering Odysseus is especially strenuous, for he is shown as a crafty liar
who tricks others to get what he wants. Additionally, we cannot tell where the truths end and the lies
begin. Consequently, we might not be able to wholly answer who Odysseus is but if we are to
understand the Odyssey, we first have to understand Odysseus.
Homer has constructed Odysseus as a complex character who is capable of molding himself into
different forms to get the best out of his surroundings. Despite this complexity, Homer has given us
enough clues to be able to recognize his actions. Of these clues, some are explicit and obvious,
others are implied and can be deduced via his speeches and his acts. The explicit ones are easy, he is
described to be, among other things, wise, kind and resourceful. The proofs of these can be seen
numerous times in the text and thus be taken at face value. The real difficulty starts when we move
past the explicit to the implicit.
To grasp his nature, we have to observe the other roles in the book who share parts of his
experiences, personalities or aims. Consider Telemachus. Despite the clear difference between his
and Odysseus` stature, other people like Nestor and Menelaus have no trouble accepting him to be
the son of Odysseus after hearing him

Hunger is seen throughout the Odyssey from the suitors trying to gain the power that Odysseus has
when he is gone, the hunger of Odysseus's men, and the hunger for power and stability in the
kingdom, and lastly the hunger for home from Odysseus. Before time of the journey of Odysseus
had just left his newborn son, Telemachus with his wife Penelope. To fight in the war in Troy, after
the war most soldiers from the war made it home and Odysseus wasn't making people believe he
was dead which led to these events.

Odysseus must think quickly to adapt to new environments to be able fight or gain an advantage

Some days I enjoy going to all my fun activities. However, sometimes I can get extremely stressed

Amphinomus is clearly depicted as an antagonist in The Odyssey. He is one of the dozens of suitors

marriage. Perhaps worst of all, Amphinomus is part of the conspiracy to kill Telemachus. However,
his status as a villain is not entirely dependent on his poor moral character. In fact, some of his

Eumaeus welcomed Odysseus into his home; the audience sees right away that Eumaeus respects
custom. Eumaeus misses Odysseus and explains that "longing for him, him that wrings [his] heart"
(14.167). He has remained very loyal to Odysseus, and has therefore grown to hate the suitors. From
what Eumaeus has explained, Penelope's loyalty is emphasized since she has ignored the ignorant

Right when Telemachus was about to head home, the gods sent a sign: an "eagle swooped down
from the crags where it was born and bred... snatched that goose fattened up for the kill inside the

A hero is someone who exceeds the expectations and performs above and beyond the average
person. Odysseus from the epic poem The Odyssey, acts above and beyond his crew and the typical
mortal. Odysseus uses his intelligence throughout his journeys to further develop his courage
allowing him to be resilient in the time of crisis arguing he is a hero.
Odysseus uses intelligence to guide him on his tricky journey home to Ithaca establishing that he is
a hero. When Odysseus and his crew land on the land of the Cyclops, they get trapped in a cave with
a human–eating Cyclops named Polyphemus. Polyphemus turns hostile and becomes a serious
threat to Odysseus and his crews' chance of returning home. Odysseus uses his intelligence to get
out of the disastrous situation by getting the Cyclops drunk and then blinding Polyphemus by using
a "stake with its fiery tip" (Homer 9.443) and thrusting it into the single eye on the Cyclops.
Odysseus' keen sense of intelligence allows him to predict that Polyphemus would try to get help
from his Cyclops neighbors so he plans ahead telling Polyphemus, "Nobody––that's my name.

many. For example, in The Odyssey, a hotshot is shown in the life of Odysseus. While many believe
Odysseus was a great figure and leader, he was far from that. He failed his crew, and for one reason
only, he was not the chieftain his men needed. More specifically, the results leading to the
announcement that Odysseus was not an epic hero was mostly due to his personality. Odysseus did
not value the opinions of his men, or lives of his men, as the reader was lead first to believe. "Why
not take these cheese, get them stowed, come back, throw open all the pens, and make a run for it?
We'll drive the kids and lambs abroad" (Homer 8). While in the land of cyclopes, Odysseus' men
told him to leave the cave and take all of the cyclops' belongings. However, Odysseus did not listen,
he wanted to see what else the cyclops had to offer, so he risked the lives of his men for his personal
needs. Time and time again Odysseus, the "epic hero" and "brilliant leader," risked his men's lives
for little or no reward. This is shown again later in story, as where his impulsiveness, arrogance, and
greed lead to another reason why he is not suited with the description of an epic hero. In the
Odyssey, Homer wrote Odysseus' words, "Cyclops if ever a mortal man inquire how you were put to
shame and blinded, tell him Odysseus, raider of cities, took your eye; Laertes' son, whose home is
Ithaca!" This quote shows Odysseus' arrogance after he blinded the cyclops. Believing he had
defeated the cyclops Odysseus decided to stroke his ego and reveal his name and put his men at risk.
With this not well thought out idea, it caused the rest of Odysseus' journey to be cursed by Poseidon.
Without his men's best thoughts in mind, Odysseus decided getting recognition was better than
safety. Not to mention, after these events, Odysseus was shown as a more of an unlike leader and

Every time he gets himself into a bad situation he manages to escape and pull himself out, this is the
clever side of Odysseus. Because Odysseus is so cocky he believes that he can do whatever he
pleases which always lands him in a different kind of trouble. After everything that Odysseus has

Odysseus is known for being a great war hero and leader who must go through many obstacles to
reach his homeland of Ithaca. Many of the obstacles are caused by the gods, however Odysseus is
the cause of his own troubles. He does not learn from his mistakes and his main flaw is pride.
Odysseus's journey home started when he was getting ready to set sail and leave Troy after the
Trojan War. Odysseus shouts how he solved the war all by himself without any help from the gods.

The man of twists and turns is a fitting name for Odysseus, due to how he reacts and acts upon
situations. Odysseus has his intelligence to thank for all the problems he has found himself in, which

Odysseus and his crew settled down inside the cave and waited for the cyclops to return. When he
returns to the cave they plead to him to let them be a guest in his home and tell him that Zeus
protects them, but the cyclops does not fear the gods so he kills two of the crew and keeps the rest as
prisoners. Odysseus and his crew cannot escape because there is a giant boulder they cannot move
blocking the exit of the cave. Odysseus knows that they cannot kill Polyphemus because then they
would never be able to leave because he is the only one who can move the boulder. Odysseus
devises a plan to escape by tricking Polyphemus into getting drunk, and then telling the cyclops that
Odysseus' name is, "Nobody–that's [his] name,"(9. 410). Eventually Polyphemus passes out drunk,
that is when Odysseus and his crew blind him. Polyphemus calls out for help so his neighbors come
and ask him what happened and he says, "Nobody's killing me now by fraud and not by force!"(9.
455). His neighbors leave because they do not believe that someone is injuring him. Odysseus
comes up with a plan to hide in the wool of Polyphemus's rams and when the cyclops lets the rams
out of the cave the crew will escape and leave the island. This situation shows how intelligent
