14. Circulatory system or Cardiovascular System
is the life support structure that
nourishes your cells with nutrients from
the food you eat and oxygen from the air
you breathe.
It circulates vital elements such as
oxygen and nutrients. At the same time, it
also transports wastes away from the
body.
15.
16. Three major parts of the
circulatory system
Heart
Blood vessel
Blood

18. Guide Questions:
How big is the heart? What is its
function?
How many chambers does a heart have?
What are they?
Why are valves important?
20. It is made of specialized cardiac muscle tissue that
allows it to act as a pump within the circulatory
system.
AORTA
LEFT ATRIUM
LEFT VENTRICLE
RIGHT VENTRICLE
RIGHT ATRIUM
21.
22. Activity 2: The Human Heart
Objective: Identify the parts of the heart.
Materials: Activity sheet, pen
Procedure: Use the word bank to label the
detailed parts of the heart. Write only the
letter of the corresponding part in the box.
25. Guide Questions:
How big is the heart? What is its function?
Human Heart is as big as the fist. It propels the blood, which carries all the vital
materials and removes the waste products that we do not need.
How many chambers does a heart have? What are they?
It has four chambers with specific tasks to do: two ventricles and two atria. The
atria are the receiving chambers of the heart, accepting blood from the body (right
atrium) and from the lungs (left atrium). The ventricles are the pumping chambers,
moving blood to the lungs (right ventricle) and into the body (left ventricle).
Why are valves important?
The valves are like one-way doors that keep the blood moving in only one
direction. Valves control movement of blood into the heart chambers and out to
the aorta and the pulmonary artery.
27. 3 Kinds of blood vessel
Arteries - carry oxygenated
blood away from the heart to
the cells, tissues and organs
of the body
Veins - carry deoxygenated
blood to the heart
28. Capillaries - the smallest
blood vessels in the body,
connecting the smallest
arteries to the smallest veins
- the actual site where
gases and nutrients are
exchanged
39. Objectives
Measure and describe your pulse
(heart rate) after several different
activities
Explain how to use different time
intervals to measure your heart rate
40. Heart rate or pulse is the
number of times your heart
beats in a minute (BPM or
beats per minute).
41. Guide Questions
1.What was your calculated resting pulse?
2.What was your pulse after exercising?
3.How would you differentiate your heart rates
before and after exercising?
4.What is the advantage of timing for a full minute
to find your pulse?
42. Guide Questions
5.What is the advantage of timing over a
shorter period of time, especially when you
have just finished exercising?
6. According to statistics, the maximum heart
rate should be 220 minus a person's age. How
would you interpret your highest heart rate in
relation to that given number?
