Essay about A Solution to Foreclosure
A Solution to Foreclosure The current issue of home foreclosure is based off of a long series of bad
loans to people who were not able pay those debts off. Based on nightly news reports over the past
year, it appears that the majority of these foreclosures are on very modest homes. My solution to this
problem is to invest in those homes using green technology. President Obama has been a strong
proponent of weatherizing homes. Simple additions such as a rubber strip under the front door and a
sealant around windows can lower air conditioning and heating costs tremendously. These things are
cheap and easy to buy, and can reduce homeowner's electric bills. In the state of Florida in 2006,
only 1,315 households were reported to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
With government support, this could be changed. Using a government subsidy, many more people
will be able to afford to install solar panels. This subsidy would be directed towards middle and
lower income households who may be in danger of foreclosure. The energy generated by those solar
panels that are not used by house can be sent back to the power grid. Instead of the homeowner
receiving the benefits of that excess energy, the funds will go back to the government subsidy to pay
for more solar panels, and so on.
Solar panels and other green technology require someone to manufacture them. As a person invests
in green technology, they also invest in creating more jobs. One of the leading causes of foreclosure
is job loss. By investing in green technology, jobs can be created that require minimal training,
which people at risk of foreclosure can be easily trained to perform. In the 1930's, President
Franklin Roosevelt created a large number of construction programs in order to boost the nation's
economy. His goal had two parts: to improve the quality of the country and to create jobs. While our
national unemployment has not reached the same level as it did during the Great Depression, it is
hard to argue the effectiveness of this strategy.
Based on a variation of the theory of supply and demand, if people take a

The Biomass Energy Conversion Technologies
4.3 Biomass Energy Conversion Technologies
Biomass materials can be converted to various useful forms of energy such as heat, electricity and
liquid fuels. The technologies used to convert biomass into energy ranged widely from the simple
combustion of biomass used for cooking and heating in developing countries to a variety of
technologies to generate modern energy carriers – electricity, gas, and liquid bio–fuels. Canada is
using various materials including waste and residuals to generate electricity, heat and, bio–liquid
fuels (bio–ethanol and biodiesel) (Defra UK et al. 2007). Biomass energy can be used at the
household (–10 kW), community (–100 kW), or industrial (– MW) scale. Key biomass energy
conversion technologies include thermal and thermochemical, and biological and biochemical.
Thermal and Thermochemical Technologies o Combustion – convert forestry, agricultural and
municipal residues into heat and power under environmentally sound conditions o Gasification –
convert forestry, agricultural and municipal residues into syngas o Pyrolysis – convert forestry and
agricultural residues into bio–oils and value added products o Thermal and Catalytic Processing –
convert a variety of new and used vegetable oils; tall oils; waste greases and animal fats into
renewable diesel fuels and diesel blending stocks

Human Development and the Importance of Wind Energy...
Human Development and the Importance of Wind Energy Conversion
For human development to continue, we will ultimately need to find sources of renewable or
virtually inexhaustible energy. It's difficult to imagine this, but even if we find several hundred or
even thousand years of coal and natural gas supplies, what will humans do for the next 250,000
years or so after they are depleted? Even the most apparently "inexhaustible" sources like fusion
involve the generation of large amounts of waste heat –– enough to place damaging stress on even a
robust ecosystem like Earth's, at least for the organisms that depend upon stability of the system to
survive.
We are engaged in a sort of world–wide biological experiment, with our descendents ... Show more

We are blissfully sedated by low conventional energy prices and are gulping down the few
remaining years of cheap natural gas and Mid East oil. As we do this, the inertia of global warming
is inexorably building.
What drives the continued development of mechanical devices like wind turbines in the face of this
widespread lack of support? In the case of wind turbine technology, I suspect that part of the reason
for persistence of this vision is how accessible wind turbines are to the understanding. They are
personal in a way that almost no other form of power generation is.
This "personal" scale has been both the blessing and the curse of wind power development. The
field tends to attract people who are committed, creative, and passionate. It also attracts a few
people who are a little too much of all of those things, to the point that sometimes the grounding of
reality is lost. Both of these tendencies will be evident in this brief history of wind power
development. Wind power will probably succeed or fail based on the ability or inability of its
proponents to bank the fires of "Romance" and focus on defining wind generation's role as a
practical alternative to conventional generation sources.
Wind energy conversion is a fascinating field to study, if only because its past has been so checkered
and its exact future is so uncertain. Unlike the aerospace industry, the computer industry, and almost
any other successful industry you can name, wind energy –– the

Ocean Thermal Energy Conversion ( Otec )
Ocean Thermal Energy Conversion (OTEC) is an energy innovation that changes over sun based
radiation to electric energy. OTEC system utilizes the sea 's regular warm angle the way that the sea
's layers of water have diverse temperatures to drive a force creating cycle.Exploratory and
legitimate studies have been carried out to center the qualities of the temperature andwater and the
cool profound water varies by around 20°C (36°F) [1], an OTEC cycle can create a lot of force, with
little effect on the encompassing environment. The unmistakable highlight of OTEC energy system
is that the finished items incorporate energy as power, as well as a few othersynergistic items. Force

A land–based plant would have warm water intake, cold water intake and water discharge pipes
extending offshore to the desired depths and conditions. A tower–mounted plant would be built on a
platform much like an offshore oil rig. The cold water intake pipe would run down the tower to the
bottom, and then continue offshore to the desired depth. A moored plant would consist of a floating
platform which would be anchored in water deep enough for the cold water intake pipe to extend
down to the desired depth beneath the plant. All of these designs would be connected by cables to
the existing electric power grid. Open ocean plant ships, on the other hand, would be large ships on
which energy intensive industrial processes such as aluminum refining, ammonia production or
hydrogen production would be carried out. The energy for these processes would be supplied by an
onboard OTEC plant.
OTEC has several of the advantages common to other solar energy technologies. First, there are no
fuel costs, which should make the technology more attractive as the price of conventional and
nuclear fuels increases. Second, OTEC energy production would appear to be relatively non–
polluting. OTEC also has several unique advantages over other methods of electrical power
generation. Unlike most solar energy methods, OTEC plants could be used to supply power to the
existing electrical grid on a continuous basis. In addition,

Essay on Ocean Thermal Energy Conversion
Ocean Thermal Energy Conversion Ocean thermal energy conversion (OTEC) utilizes the natural
temperature difference in tropical regions to generate electricity. The idea of using the ocean to
generate electricity was proposed by a French physicist by the name of Jacques Arsene d'Arsonval
in 1881. Georges Cluade who was one of d'Arsonval students, built the first OTEC power plant in
Cuba. Cluade also built a second power plant in 1935 on a 10,000 ton cargo ship which was moored
off the coast of Brazil. Unfortunate events with weather and waves caused both facilities to be
destroyed before either could be net generators. The United States became interested in OTEC
technology in 1974 and built the Natural Energy Laboratory of Hawaii Authority ... Show more

The steam then boils the low–point boiling fluid, which drives the turbine to produce electricity. The
hybrid combined the vacuum portion of the open cycle system and uses the low point boiling fluid
like the closed cycle system. Unfortunately, there is no mass energy production for the Ocean
Thermal Energy Conversion but there has been a successful attempt in 1979, when Lockheed–
Martin successfully built and operated over a three month period a net power mini–OTEC system
which generated 50 kilowatts of net power off the Big Island of Hawaii. But the United States is not
the only country who is invested into OTEC systems, Japan has currently a closed–system OTEC
plant that has generated 31.5 kilowatts of power during tests. The positives of the OTEC system is
monumental. Even if one–tenth of one percent of the solar energy trapped by the oceans could be
converted into electricity, It would generate twenty times the amount of electricity the United States
use everyday. "It could easily supply all the energy we wanted," said Terry Penney, a lab program
manager at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory in Golden, Colo. "The process is very low
efficiency, just 2 or 3 or 4 percent, but all that energy's free."(qtd. in charles. "The Energy Debates:
Ocean Thermal Energy Conversion." LiveScience. TechMedia Network, 12 Dec. 2008. Web. 03

Case Study 1: Midsouth Chamber of Commerce–The Role of The Operating Manager Information
System
Question: Something had to be done– but what?
After reading the case, one continues to come up with new problems and issues along the way that
are related to information technologies. The three main problems we encountered in this case are
lack of IT knowledge, inappropriate planning, and ineffective and inefficient Resource Management.
Each of these issues requires specific attention to fix the next problem and so forth. The solution to
attack each individual problem or issue will be explained as follows.
Problem #1
Attempting to manage the conversion from an old technology system to a new one without the
proper knowledge or background ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Delaying the IT investment on the new system would have been the best option, since it is a good
way to maintain costs down.
Solution
MCSS needed to implement a realistic timetable that will give it enough time to test and apply all of
the operations functions before the Y2K ordeal. Now, the MCSS needs to execute the full
implementation of the new system immediately before reaching the year 2000. This will prevent all
systems malfunctions. In addition to that, Mr. Lassiter needs to get more people from UNITRAK to
come over and work with MCSS personnel to get them adapted to the new system.
Problem #3 In the organizational structure of MCSS, there was a lack of communication, which
failed to address the increasing problems that resulted in loss of control.
Solution
Mr. Lassiter, being the manager of sales and marketing, should have addressed the entire
organization of the new system changes. He did not even address the full system conversion to
several of his own staff members. Also, Mr. Lassiter anticipated Kovecki had studied the
documentation, which he had not. Mr. Lassiter needs to prepare a special meeting with key members
of staff

What is the tone of the meeting. The plan is to create a rational yet subjective tone that discusses
expected results. This will ensure that while an adherence to data and facts are prevalent in the
presentation, subjective considerations are presented and forwarded as important elements in the
decision–making process. I will begin with an introduction of who I am, my experience and a clear
statement of specifically why I feel I have been hired and what I can directly bring to the company
(in this part I will try to engage those I feel we can initiate an alliance with while not directly
antagonizing the limiters). Finally, I will end with a clear plan including our vision of
communication. As stated previously, I will be as transparent as possible because of the need to
create trust in myself and the communication division as a whole. The department vision presented
initially will be quite lean and minimal with the focus being on quality over quantity. The focus of
our energy will be on channels and tactics that have a better chance to deliver disproportional results
to build momentum and support for our new department such as the go ahead for a communications
audit and the need to invest in the necessary staff and infrastructure to achieve this.
What are our goals going into the meeting?
To create a presentation that has senior exec clearly understand the objectives of our plan.

The World's Largest Solar Collectors And Energy Storage...
We have many different kind of energy source in our world and the ocean is a big part of one of
thought energy source. The ocean makes up more than 70% of the Earth's surface and it collects a
lot of sun's heat and energy. This will make it the "world's largest solar collectors and energy storage
system" and the Ocean Thermal Energy Conversion (OTEC) will probably seems like a great tool to
have [7]. This energy source works is by using the solar energy collected from the sun by the ocean
and converting that energy into electric energy. The OTEC uses the warm ocean water that was
heated up from the sun (around 77 degrees Fahrenheit) to vaporize a working fluid with a low
boiling point. The working fluid expands and spins a generator, creating electricity. From there, the
vapor is then cooled down from the cold ocean water (around 41 degrees Fahrenheit) that is pumped
up from the deep parts of the ocean layer. This cause the vapor to turn back into the working fluid
from before and condenses back into a liquid. Because of this, the whole system is reusable and is a
continually electricity generating cycle [7]. This is only one type out of three OTEC systems, known
as closed–cycle system. The other two systems will be explain later on in the paper. This paper will
explain different aspects of the OTEC systems, from the different types that are currently being used
to the costs and environmental effect to the pros and cons of the OTEC systems.

How Did The Us Convert To The Metric System
When the United States separated from Britain they kept the original Imperial measurement system
despite disregarding the previous government. Ever since America has used inches, feet, and yards
as standard measurement. However, while the U.S. continued to use the imperial system other
countries progressed. In 1799, after the french revolution, France converted to the metric system.
Invented by Gabriel Monton in France 1670, the metric system uses common powers of ten to
measure weight and lengths so that it could be conveniently used with decimals. Soon the metric
system had spread from France to Britain and most of the world. Countries now use the metric
system to measure length, area, volume, mass, force, pressure, energy, power, and temperature. ...

By converting to the metric system our trade would increase because there would no longer be a
need to change between systems and other countries could view the modification as making amends.
It could also save millions of dollars for the U.S. because large companies like NASA would all be
on the same page using the metric system. Smaller mistakes could also be prevented by swapping to
the much simpler metric system. One last thing the change would impact is education. If kids no
longer had to learn two measurement systems they would have more time to learn other material. All
in all, If america wants to prosper economically and in education then the government must make

Energy Is The Biological Conversion Of Plant Energy And...
Carbon is always cycling around the earth, whether it's plants or animals, both require carbon. Plants
get it from taking carbon dioxide from the oxygen that is in the air. Plants then use this and the
sunlight's energy to make food for themselves. Animals get energy by eating the plants or eating
other animals that have eaten those plants. During cell respiration, oxygen and food both provide
energy. Respiration makes then carbon dioxide, which is then put out into the atmosphere. But if
there is too much carbon dioxide in the atmosphere, there needs to be a solution to reduce it so no
harm is caused to the Earth. Photosynthesis is the biological conversion of light energy into
chemical energy. It occurs in green plants and photosynthetic bacteria through a series of many
biochemical reactions (Ensminger,2014). The equation for photosynthesis is 6CO2+6H2O+light
energy → C6H1206+6O2. Cellular Respiration is the process by which organisms combine oxygen
with food stuff molecules, diverting the chemical energy in these substances into life sustaining
processes and discarding, as waste products, carbon dioxide and water (Cell Respiration,2017). The
equation for cellular respiration is C6H1206+6O2 → 6H2O+ 36 ATP. Photosynthesis are green plant
who create their own food and it takes place in the chloroplast of the plant cells. Cellular Respiration

Advantages Of Ion Implantation
1.1 Ion Implantation
Ion implantation is a materials engineering operation where ions of a material are accelerated in an
electric field and impacted into a solid. Ion implantation can also be referred to as a technique used
to deposit precise quantities of n–type and p–type dopants or impurities into a semiconductor at a
low temperature. Ion implantation alters the physical, chemical, electronic properties of a material
by forcibly impacting different types of ions into the material.
In ion implantation, dopant atoms are volatilized, ionized, accelerated, separated by the mass–to–
charge ratios and directed at a target. The atoms enter the crystal lattice of the material and collide
with the existing atoms. These atoms lose energy and finally ... Show more content on

Photosynthesis Is The Conversion Of Light Energy Essay
Photosynthesis is the conversion of light energy to chemical energy. There are many different factors
that can affect the rate of photosynthesis, those being light intensity, the temperature of the water,
the amount of carbon dioxide in the water, and the color of the light. In this experiment we chose to
alter the color of light that was used in the process involving the aquatic plant Elodea while
maintaining the other 3 factors. This experiment was conducted to see how much of an effect the
color of the light played in the amount of carbon dioxide produced in the process of photosynthesis.
We measured the amount of NaOH that was needed to color the water pink and then converted the
net difference of drops into the net volume of carbon dioxide that was produced or consumed. The
results showed that there was not a significant difference in the amount of carbon dioxide produced
when using a standard regular colored light bulb compared to a green light bulb.
Introduction
Elodea, an aquatic plant, is very commonly used in classrooms around the world to help teach the
process of photosynthesis (Berkeley 2015). Photosynthesis is the conversion of light energy to
chemical energy. The process of photosynthesis occurs in the chloroplast of the plants. Inside the
chloroplast is chlorophyll, which is what absorbs the light energy from the sunlight. Light intensity,
the temperature of the water, the amount of carbon dioxide in the water, and the color of light used

Two highly competing possible replacement are solar energy for consumer household use Red
(2012) and hydrogen fuel cells for automotive applications Efficient Mileage (2009). These two are
held high due to the fact of its energy input vs output and its effect on the environment. Both offer
several different methods of energy farming and as well as performance its usage. When we take a
look at fossil fuels, there are many other drawbacks to its usage other than the fact it is a depleting
substance, there are also the environmental damages that result from the consumption of fossil fuels.
One byproduct of burning fossil fuels is the release of efficient gasses that creates the greenhouse
effect. In Bernard L Cohen's book "The Nuclear Energy Option" The greenhouse effect is caused by
molecules in the earth's atmosphere absorbing and reemitting infrared radiation. The more fuel
burned by fossil fuels causes more carbon dioxide (CO2) to be released into the atmosphere which
in turn allows for more radiation to be absorbed and redirected back towards the earth. These
changes to temperature cause our ice caps to melt, ocean temperatures to rise and decreased
agricultural output to be diminished. The outcome of these results affects the countries people

Abstract–In this study a new noise source is proposed as a one of renewable energy sources in
energy harvesting. Disk Jokey (DJ) is a common device in celebrations and other events. Converting
the produced noise from DJ to electric energy by using a suitable piezoelectric transducer is the
main aim of this study. Piezoelectric sensors used to convert the sound waves to electric charges.
Piezoelectric sensor of the model 7BB–41–2 was used. The piezoelectric sensors were connected in
series, parallel, and series with parallel combination connections. The disk jockey was used as an
acoustic noise source. The sound intensity levels of the output sound were 81, 84, 87 dB. The output
of the three connection modes were measured at 0, 1,2,3,4, and 5cm distance. The results showed
that the parallel connection gave the highest power at the various distances. The maximum
generated power was 4.96mwatts without using an external power supply for the signal condition
device. The power decreases by increasing the distance from the source of the noise.

The Degradation Of Solar Cell
Solar Cell Degradation in Space Abstract:
This paper will present the degradation of solar cell performance when exposed to solar wind in
space, particularly in the Van Allen belt region. Also, solar cell theory is mathematically modeled
and described using Matlab simulation software accompanied by the SRIM software to generate the
targeting data. Follow with the degradation modeling of Si, InGaP/GaAs/Ge triple–junction space
solar cells when are exposed to high energy charged particles, especially protons and electrons in the
Mega–electron–Volt range. In this model, carrier removal rate of the base layer and damage
coefficient of minority carrier diffusion length in each sub–cell are considered as radiation
degradation parameters. In addition, this paper will present the status of high radiation–resistant
solar cells made from Si, InGaP/GaAs/Ge for space application to guarantee the successful
operation of the satellite.

Essay on Energy Resource: Tar Sands and Nuclear Energy
Tar Sands are a mixture of clay sand water and black oil that is found in various places in the world
such as Venezuela and under the Canadian Forests. Most of the world's oil currently comes from tar
sands, and oil is used for gasoline. Mining of tar sands is quite tough and hard to do. The sands
cannot be pumped in their natural state. It must be mined through open pit mining techniques. After
mining the sands are transported to and extraction plant where a hot water process separates the
bitumen from sand, water and minerals. This process releases the bitumen from the oil sands and
causes tiny air bubbles to attach to the bitumen droplets that float to the top of the separation vessel,
where the bitumen can be skimmed off. (Oil Shale ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Part 2 Nuclear energy is the energy that is released during nuclear fission or fusion also called a
nuclear reaction. It is used to generate electricity energy is produced when a nucleus absorbs a
neutron and splits into two lighter nuclei. The atoms consist of an electron cloud and a nucleus.
(nuclearinfo.net) Although Nuclear Plants cost millions of dollars to produce they are very reliable
for energy sources. All nuclear plants produce radioactive waste. To pay for the cost of storing,
transporting and disposing these wastes in the United States a tenth of a cent per kilowatt–hour is
added to electricity bills. When one nucleus decays 200,000,000 electron volts are produced, yet
vary minimal amounts are collected. Making it possible to capture all the energy would end our need
for fossil fuels. Yet the plants that we need must use thousands of tons of water everyday to cool the
systems. Hydrogen is also needed for the splitting, yet hydrogen is at an unlimited supply.

The Importance Of The Conversion Of Lower Energy Light
Upconversion is a term that characterizes the conversion of lower–energy light, particularly in the
near–infrared region, into higher–energy light within the visible spectrum. This occurs through a
process in which the sequential absorption of multi–photon near–infrared light yields the emission
of light that is of shorter wavelength[1]. This process is represented in Figure 1, which shows the
emissions of light within the visible spectrum after excitation of various dopant ions by near–
infrared light[1]. The upconversion effect has been observed primarily in the rare–earth metals of
the lanthanides as well as yttrium, and scandium; however, some transition metals and actinides can
also display this effect[2]. Lanthanide ions display special inner–shell arrangements of 4fn 5d0–1,
which allow for unique energy levels and provide shielding from the outer shells[2]. Due to their
various f–orbital configurations, lanthanide ions are able to display very sharp luminescence
emissions via intra–4f or 4f–4d transitions[2,3]. The importance of the lanthanide ions is evident in
several applications including applications in lasers, bioprobe applications, optical imaging, and
photodynamic therapy [2,3]. This is due to their fluorescent properties, which include: resistance to
photobleaching, monochromaticity, large Stokes shifts, narrow bandwidth, and long emission
lifetime[2,3]. The direct excitation of the lanthanide ions is not very effective because they are
limited by low

People of the world are in need to find and develop new sources of energy to power their lives.
Owing to the increasing demand for electrical energy, world's fossil fuel supply will thus be depleted
in a few decades. Hence, alternative or renewable sources of energy have to be developed to meet
the future energy requirement. Grid connected wind capacity is undergoing through fastest rate of
growth compared to any other form of renewable power generation, achieving global annual growth
rates of 20–30 %. The power electronic converters play a major role in wind energy conversion
system for controlling and conditioning of output power from wind energy. During last few years
matrix converters and multi level converter topologies have generated significant interest. This
paper discusses the diode clamped multilevel matrix converter design for double fed induction
generator based wind energy conversion system. The MATLAB/SIMULINK software is used for
analyzing the converter performance.

Advantages And Disadvantages Of Solar Thermal And Solar...
Our sun produces 386,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 watts of energy every second. This
enormous amount of free energy needs to be harvested because natural resources are running out.
Peak oil production in the United States was reached in 1970 and the global peak could be coming
soon. When oil begins to run out, how will humans continue to live the way we are now? The
answer to this is the sun. The sun is the most reliable and abundant source of energy that humans
can use to create electricity. Solar thermal energy can be easily confused with solar panel energy
production, so it is important to distinguish between the two. This form of energy production has
many advantages to its use, but also some disadvantages that might drive away potential new users.
It is important to differentiate between solar thermal and solar panel technology because it can be
very easy to confuse the two. Solar thermal electric energy generation uses light from the sun to
create heat. The heat that is generated from the sun is used to run a heat engine, which turns a
generator to make electricity (Novosel and Jurij 2017). The fluid that is heated by the sunlight that is
concentrated is usually a liquid or a gas. Some examples of the fluids and gasses used are water,
water and salts, air, nitrogen, helium, and so on (Novosel and Jurij 2017). Different types of heat
engines range from steam engines to gas turbines. These various types of engines are fairly efficient
and can produce hundreds of

For example, Amazon boosted its profits by moving credit card offers from its home page to the
shopping cart page. Such examples that utilized web testing techniques clearly espouses the idea
that tiny changes could have a big impact. In a managerial level, experiments can help managers to
optimize investment based on the potential improvement suggested by these tests. For instance,
experiments in the Microsoft Company on its Bing search engine showed that every 100–
millisecond difference in performance had a 0.6% impact on revenue. With Bing's yearly revenue
surpassing $3 billion, a 100–millisecond speedup is worth $18 million in annual incremental
revenue. Results advocate that investing on a project to improve the Bing's response time can
generate billions of dollars for the company. (Kohavi &Thomke, 2017)

Uncertainties Of Real World Policymaking : An Example From...
Uncertainties in real–world policymaking: an example from the Indonesia's energy conversion
In regard to the existing policy models and theories, policymaking seems like driving a great car,
with some best friends, on the perfect road, at a constant speed to some beautiful destinations. In
practice, however, that is not the case. Policy practice is like driving an almost damaged car with a
sick passenger, on a full of holes road, to uncertain destinations. That simple illustration from one of
my class sessions reminds me of some challenging real–world policymaking I ever experienced. As
a junior analyst at the office of Indonesian VP, I learned that regardless of the positive impacts, the
VP's energy conversion policy had to confront various uncertainties that made the policymaking was
tough. Using that particular example, this essay highlights some of the uncertainties practical
policymaking has to deal with. Some valuable lessons are discussed showing that policymaking
needs not only careful analyses but also fast decision–making and strong leadership.
So, during his first term in power, the Indonesian VP Jusuf Kalla initiated an energy conversion
program for Indonesian households from using kerosene to LPG in 2006–2009 (Budya & Arofat,
2011). However, many individuals, social and political groups strongly opposed the policy. They
argued that the government was wasting their budget on the untested policy. But, the government
believed that the conversion was the most

OVERVIEW
Victoria's Secret, one of the world's most recognizable fashion brands, established itself in the Bay
Area in the early 1970s. Originally owned by an ambitious Stanford graduate looking for a
comfortable and high–end retailer to buy his wife lingerie, Roy Raymond opened the first store at
Stanford Shopping Center. Styled after a Victorian boudoir, Raymond's success prompted him to
open three other locations, a catalog business, and a corporate headquarters within a few years. His
inability to balance finances with his creative vision, Roy Raymond fell into trouble and was forced

Replacing Pink is Intimissimi, an Italian brand that is expected to impact 6–8% of the store's sales,
but caters to a more sophisticated client. Thrid party brands are also making a stronger appearance
this year as the store became a ‘critical fashion' destination. New lines from Betsy Johnson, Anna
Sui, Chantal Thomass and Pleasure State create a new sophistication for the store, but its higher
price may alienate the average shopper. The launch of the new Very Sexy Makeup line also
impacted our ability to accurately compare October 2005 with the same month in 2006. A complete
renovation of the make up line launched in September 2006 provided heightened figures from the
beauty zone, again making yearly comparisons difficult. The good news is that new product lines as
immense as those listed above are not on the agenda for 2007 and will provide a stronger correlation

Energy Conversion And Its Effect On Climate
Energy conversion has been essential in every human activity since the prehistoric age. A basic
extent of the evolution of society is directly associated with the changes in the fundamental sources
of energy and its uses. Through the last 250 years, people have learned how to harvest and deal with
energy in different forms to make work easier and live more comfortable. Nevertheless, this human
activity is overloading the atmosphere with greenhouse gases emission, which make the temperature
higher, trap heat and generates serious and harmful impacts on the environment and on climate.
Therefore, the governments all around the world are making an effort to promote and develop
renewable energy as the new main energy source. All started with human's dependence on their
muscular power to survive; after that, they learned how to use animal force and fire, and slowly new
tools and energy sources were being developed and discovered, from agriculture to the big move by
the wind and water power. Furthermore, in the middle of the 18th century occurred the Industrial
Revolution, also known as the energy revolution, when the use of coal and steam engines started,
causing an accelerated growth of cities and population. In addition, this revolution encourage future
creations and discoveries, such as the internal–combustion engines, use of natural gas, electricity
and oil. From the end of the 19th century on, the use of fossil fuel and electricity resulted in an

Report 1
Summary
This report revolves around Michael Faraday and his discovery as one of the greatest scientist in the
19th century. He was born in Newington, Surrey, England, on September 22, 1791. Faraday was
self–taught he only went to school at 13 and got a basic education. He then attended lectures after he
read book of scientific subjects while he worked as a book binder. In 18th century Faraday
discovered electromagnetic induction, the principle behind numerous medical, industrial,
technological and other applications. Faraday's law explains the relation between a time varying
magnetic field and an induced electric field.
Electric Generator
Generators transform mechanical energy to electrical energy. The AC generator consists of a loop of
wire mostly rectangular which is rotated by some external means in a magnetic field as seen in the
diagram below. The source of mechanical energy may vary widely from a hand crank to an internal
combustion engine in the diagram below show that a hand crank was used.

renewability. Many possibilities exist for energy production including: Fossil Fuels (natural gas, oil,
coal, oilshale), nuclear, solar, wind, geothermal, biomass and wastes, & hydroelectric. Efficiency of
the use of these resource are directly related to the location and the demand in that location. For

There are three types of energy converters producing electricity: closed cycle, open cycle, and a
hybrid system combining the previous two systems. Closed cycle OTEC systems use the warm
surface water to boil a fluid that has a low boiling point (e.g. ammonia). The pressure caused by the
expanding vapor is then used to turn a turbine. The turbine then turns a generator to produce
electricity. Cold water is then used to recycle the vapor back to a condensed state and the cycle is
repeated. An open cycle system directly boils the warm surface water. Operating at low pressure, the
steam that is created is channeled in turn to a turbine engine. The water vapor is condensed again by
cold water. If the condensed water is kept seperate from the cold seawater it can be used for
consumption or agriculture. Other by–products produced by the open cycle OTEC are a variety of
minerals. Both cycles produce electricity through the use of solar warmed water.
Steam Powered Turbine Engine
Capturing the power of steam is not a new idea but one that has been used for hundreds of years. A
jet of steam can readily do work on an object by the jet propolsion effect of steam escaping through
a small guided hole or by a stream colliding with a system of paddle wheels. Most early steam
powered machines used the principles of the latter. The system of paddles, or turbine, was used to
drive a shaft which in turn could drive any number of gear or belt driven mechanisms. The

the property however he is trying to make his offer look more attractive than the competitors. With
thorough research, he has found ways that would improve the building and in turn generate a larger

III. POSSIBLE SOLUTIONS If Bailey were to outbid the competitors and successfully purchase the
building there are a variety of options that Bailey could engage in in order to improve the building.
The first option would be to keep Pilgrim as a tenant in the building. By doing this he would secure
100,000 square feet of space at $26 /sq. ft generating about $2,600,000 in rental income just from
Pilgrim. Also with keeping the space as office space, Bailey found that he would be able to fill in
two out of the four floors of the atrium adding an additional 10,000 in rentable square footage. This
was something that none of the other competitors had noticed. Bailey also noticed that he would be
able to renovate all 20 bathrooms within the building but that his renovation would be about 15,000
cheaper than his competitors. Continuing with the renovations, Bailey saw that the atrium would
need to be upgraded and instead of it costing him around $200,000, which would be the cost to his
competitors, he had the ability to save $50,000 by reusing the marble in the bathrooms as the floor
and walls of the atrium. Taking into consideration all of the upgrades and renovations, as well as the
fact that Bailey would be able to manage the building at 0.50/ sq ft compared to his competitors
which were managing at $1.25/ sq ft, the value at which Bailey would place on keeping the building
an office space would be $3,433,649.13 (see

The 's Theory Of Energy Conversion
The first mode of knowledge conversion enables an organization to convert tacit knowledge through
facilitating interaction between individuals (Bashar Sarayreh 2012). Individuals in this case, can
gain tacit knowledge without necessarily having to communicate by means of language. Instead,
tacit knowledge can be converted into tacit knowledge through practice, imitation and observation.
An example of this form of knowledge conversion is demonstrated by apprentices who learn critical
skills just by working alongside their mentors. Evidently, therefore, experience is a key cornerstone
when it comes to an individual acquiring tacit knowledge. Nonaka's theory of energy conversion
suggests that it is enormously difficult for individuals to share their thinking processes without
keenly sharing their experiences (Bashar Sarayreh 2012). A common feature of this form of
conversion is emotional attachment to shared experiences. As a result of this, the spiral model calls
the process of creating tacit knowledge by sharing experiences, socialization. Conversion of explicit
knowledge to explicit knowledge on the other hand requires the incorporation of social processes in
order to combine various forms of explicit knowledge possessed by different individuals. Under this
arrangement, individuals share knowledge through meetings or telephone conversations.
Reconfiguration of existing information through acts such as adding or sorting information can
consequently lead to creation of newer

Alternative Future Energy Storage And Conversion Systems
Metal–air batteries have been intensively explored as an alternative future energy storage and
conversion systems owing to their intrinsically high energy and power densities, the relatively
mature research on air electrode, and cost effective composition of non–noble fuel electrode, as well
as in response to the high energy demand for portable devices and electric vehicles even stationary
power plants [1–5]. Of late, research into the metal–air techniques has been focused on Zn–air
(~1,000 Wh kg–1), Li–air (~13,000 Wh kg–1), and Ge–air (~1,500 Wh kg–1) batteries because of
its very high specific energy and energy density with open cell air cathode structure [3–6]. With
these devices, however, the electrochemical energy could be stored in the stationary part as form of
sacrificial metal anode. This distinct architecture would make a limitation approach for large–scale
commercialization unless the anode can provide good electrochemical reversibility and high cyclic
durability.
As a feasible alternative to continuous operation, recently, a high temperature liquid metal–air
energy storage cell (LMAESC) in conjunction with a solid oxide electrolyte has been investigated
applying post–transition metals such as In [7], Sn [7–17], Sb [18–25], Pb [7], and Bi [12] as a
sacrificial electrode, so–called liquid metal anode (LMA). Since these liquid metals has relatively
low melting point, it can improve the anode polarization by incorporating liquid wetting materials to

Missing Features
How could PSC have avoided the problem of the missing features? If PSC had gotten RFPs the
problem of missing features in the system they chose would have been eliminated during the vendor
selection process. However, in the route they did take those features that were important to Steve but
were not included in the AIS could have been included by having a systems requirements list and a
written contract with the specifications explicitly written out.
Conversion and Reporting
How could PSC have avoided some of the conversion and reporting problems it faced? As I stated
before, more time was needed in the testing and training portion of the conversion before the new
AIS went online. One trick I learned from our own system change at the city I work in is to train a
few operators on the new systems during the testing phase and then have them train a few more in
their own departments. By using your own employees to train each other they are gaining a better
understanding of how the system works. This way on the day of the change you have more people
who understand the system and how to fix or correct the things that can go wrong. The more people
you can have trained this way before the system change the better off you will be at the critical
moment.

Solar Energy Is The Conversion Of Power From The Sun
Research Paper – Solar Energy
Blakely J. Phillips
BGEN 440, Montana State University – Billings
Introduction
Solar energy is the conversion of power from the sun to usable electricity (Alternative Energy,
2014). The most common source of solar energy utilizes photovoltaic cells to convert sunlight into
electricity (Alternative Energy, 2014). Photovoltaics use a semi–conductor to absorb the radiation
from the sun, creating and emitting electrons, which are then harnessed and used as electricity
(Alternative Energy, 2014).
Pros of Solar Energy There are many advantages of using solar energy. It is renewable, abundant,
sustainable, environmentally friendly, and more. Solar energy is a renewable energy source, which
means that unlike non–renewable energy sources such as fossil fuels, coal, and nuclear energy, we
cannot run out of solar energy (Maehlum, 2014). As long as the sun is alive, which according to
NASA is another 6.5 billion years, we will have access to solar energy (Maehlum, 2014). The true
potential of solar energy is astounding and overly abundant. The surface of Earth receives 120,000
terawatts of solar radiation, better known as sunlight, which is 20,000 times more energy than what
is needed to supply power to the entire world (Maehlum, 2014).
Solar energy is not only abundant and renewable it is also sustainable and environmentally friendly.
As a sustainable energy source, solar energy is able to meet the needs of the present without
compromising

Essay About A Solution To Foreclosure

  • 1. Essay about A Solution to Foreclosure A Solution to Foreclosure The current issue of home foreclosure is based off of a long series of bad loans to people who were not able pay those debts off. Based on nightly news reports over the past year, it appears that the majority of these foreclosures are on very modest homes. My solution to this problem is to invest in those homes using green technology. President Obama has been a strong proponent of weatherizing homes. Simple additions such as a rubber strip under the front door and a sealant around windows can lower air conditioning and heating costs tremendously. These things are cheap and easy to buy, and can reduce homeowner's electric bills. In the state of Florida in 2006, only 1,315 households were reported to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... With government support, this could be changed. Using a government subsidy, many more people will be able to afford to install solar panels. This subsidy would be directed towards middle and lower income households who may be in danger of foreclosure. The energy generated by those solar panels that are not used by house can be sent back to the power grid. Instead of the homeowner receiving the benefits of that excess energy, the funds will go back to the government subsidy to pay for more solar panels, and so on. Solar panels and other green technology require someone to manufacture them. As a person invests in green technology, they also invest in creating more jobs. One of the leading causes of foreclosure is job loss. By investing in green technology, jobs can be created that require minimal training, which people at risk of foreclosure can be easily trained to perform. In the 1930's, President Franklin Roosevelt created a large number of construction programs in order to boost the nation's economy. His goal had two parts: to improve the quality of the country and to create jobs. While our national unemployment has not reached the same level as it did during the Great Depression, it is hard to argue the effectiveness of this strategy. Based on a variation of the theory of supply and demand, if people take a ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 3. The Biomass Energy Conversion Technologies 4.3 Biomass Energy Conversion Technologies Biomass materials can be converted to various useful forms of energy such as heat, electricity and liquid fuels. The technologies used to convert biomass into energy ranged widely from the simple combustion of biomass used for cooking and heating in developing countries to a variety of technologies to generate modern energy carriers – electricity, gas, and liquid bio–fuels. Canada is using various materials including waste and residuals to generate electricity, heat and, bio–liquid fuels (bio–ethanol and biodiesel) (Defra UK et al. 2007). Biomass energy can be used at the household (–10 kW), community (–100 kW), or industrial (– MW) scale. Key biomass energy conversion technologies include thermal and thermochemical, and biological and biochemical. Thermal and Thermochemical Technologies o Combustion – convert forestry, agricultural and municipal residues into heat and power under environmentally sound conditions o Gasification – convert forestry, agricultural and municipal residues into syngas o Pyrolysis – convert forestry and agricultural residues into bio–oils and value added products o Thermal and Catalytic Processing – convert a variety of new and used vegetable oils; tall oils; waste greases and animal fats into renewable diesel fuels and diesel blending stocks Biological and Biochemical Technologies o Fermentation – convert the starch and cellulose components of biomass to bio–ethanol o Anaerobic Digestion – convert ... • 5. Human Development and the Importance of Wind Energy... Human Development and the Importance of Wind Energy Conversion For human development to continue, we will ultimately need to find sources of renewable or virtually inexhaustible energy. It's difficult to imagine this, but even if we find several hundred or even thousand years of coal and natural gas supplies, what will humans do for the next 250,000 years or so after they are depleted? Even the most apparently "inexhaustible" sources like fusion involve the generation of large amounts of waste heat –– enough to place damaging stress on even a robust ecosystem like Earth's, at least for the organisms that depend upon stability of the system to survive. We are engaged in a sort of world–wide biological experiment, with our descendents ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... We are blissfully sedated by low conventional energy prices and are gulping down the few remaining years of cheap natural gas and Mid East oil. As we do this, the inertia of global warming is inexorably building. What drives the continued development of mechanical devices like wind turbines in the face of this widespread lack of support? In the case of wind turbine technology, I suspect that part of the reason for persistence of this vision is how accessible wind turbines are to the understanding. They are personal in a way that almost no other form of power generation is. This "personal" scale has been both the blessing and the curse of wind power development. The field tends to attract people who are committed, creative, and passionate. It also attracts a few people who are a little too much of all of those things, to the point that sometimes the grounding of reality is lost. Both of these tendencies will be evident in this brief history of wind power development. Wind power will probably succeed or fail based on the ability or inability of its proponents to bank the fires of "Romance" and focus on defining wind generation's role as a practical alternative to conventional generation sources. Wind energy conversion is a fascinating field to study, if only because its past has been so checkered and its exact future is so uncertain. Unlike the aerospace industry, the computer industry, and almost any other successful industry you can name, wind energy –– the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 7. Ocean Thermal Energy Conversion ( Otec ) Ocean Thermal Energy Conversion (OTEC) is an energy innovation that changes over sun based radiation to electric energy. OTEC system utilizes the sea 's regular warm angle the way that the sea 's layers of water have diverse temperatures to drive a force creating cycle.Exploratory and legitimate studies have been carried out to center the qualities of the temperature andwater and the cool profound water varies by around 20°C (36°F) [1], an OTEC cycle can create a lot of force, with little effect on the encompassing environment. The unmistakable highlight of OTEC energy system is that the finished items incorporate energy as power, as well as a few othersynergistic items. Force is changed over to high voltage DC, and is cabled to shore for ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... A land–based plant would have warm water intake, cold water intake and water discharge pipes extending offshore to the desired depths and conditions. A tower–mounted plant would be built on a platform much like an offshore oil rig. The cold water intake pipe would run down the tower to the bottom, and then continue offshore to the desired depth. A moored plant would consist of a floating platform which would be anchored in water deep enough for the cold water intake pipe to extend down to the desired depth beneath the plant. All of these designs would be connected by cables to the existing electric power grid. Open ocean plant ships, on the other hand, would be large ships on which energy intensive industrial processes such as aluminum refining, ammonia production or hydrogen production would be carried out. The energy for these processes would be supplied by an onboard OTEC plant. OTEC has several of the advantages common to other solar energy technologies. First, there are no fuel costs, which should make the technology more attractive as the price of conventional and nuclear fuels increases. Second, OTEC energy production would appear to be relatively non– polluting. OTEC also has several unique advantages over other methods of electrical power generation. Unlike most solar energy methods, OTEC plants could be used to supply power to the existing electrical grid on a continuous basis. In addition, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 9. Essay on Ocean Thermal Energy Conversion Ocean Thermal Energy Conversion Ocean thermal energy conversion (OTEC) utilizes the natural temperature difference in tropical regions to generate electricity. The idea of using the ocean to generate electricity was proposed by a French physicist by the name of Jacques Arsene d'Arsonval in 1881. Georges Cluade who was one of d'Arsonval students, built the first OTEC power plant in Cuba. Cluade also built a second power plant in 1935 on a 10,000 ton cargo ship which was moored off the coast of Brazil. Unfortunate events with weather and waves caused both facilities to be destroyed before either could be net generators. The United States became interested in OTEC technology in 1974 and built the Natural Energy Laboratory of Hawaii Authority ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The steam then boils the low–point boiling fluid, which drives the turbine to produce electricity. The hybrid combined the vacuum portion of the open cycle system and uses the low point boiling fluid like the closed cycle system. Unfortunately, there is no mass energy production for the Ocean Thermal Energy Conversion but there has been a successful attempt in 1979, when Lockheed– Martin successfully built and operated over a three month period a net power mini–OTEC system which generated 50 kilowatts of net power off the Big Island of Hawaii. But the United States is not the only country who is invested into OTEC systems, Japan has currently a closed–system OTEC plant that has generated 31.5 kilowatts of power during tests. The positives of the OTEC system is monumental. Even if one–tenth of one percent of the solar energy trapped by the oceans could be converted into electricity, It would generate twenty times the amount of electricity the United States use everyday. "It could easily supply all the energy we wanted," said Terry Penney, a lab program manager at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory in Golden, Colo. "The process is very low efficiency, just 2 or 3 or 4 percent, but all that energy's free."(qtd. in charles. "The Energy Debates: Ocean Thermal Energy Conversion." LiveScience. TechMedia Network, 12 Dec. 2008. Web. 03 Feb. 2014.) Unlike Solar and Wind alternative energy, OTEC can work during the day and night, which means that OTEC can create ... • 11. Midsouth Chamber Of Commerce Case Study Case Study 1: Midsouth Chamber of Commerce–The Role of The Operating Manager Information System Question: Something had to be done– but what? After reading the case, one continues to come up with new problems and issues along the way that are related to information technologies. The three main problems we encountered in this case are lack of IT knowledge, inappropriate planning, and ineffective and inefficient Resource Management. Each of these issues requires specific attention to fix the next problem and so forth. The solution to attack each individual problem or issue will be explained as follows. Problem #1 Attempting to manage the conversion from an old technology system to a new one without the proper knowledge or background ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Delaying the IT investment on the new system would have been the best option, since it is a good way to maintain costs down. Solution MCSS needed to implement a realistic timetable that will give it enough time to test and apply all of the operations functions before the Y2K ordeal. Now, the MCSS needs to execute the full implementation of the new system immediately before reaching the year 2000. This will prevent all systems malfunctions. In addition to that, Mr. Lassiter needs to get more people from UNITRAK to come over and work with MCSS personnel to get them adapted to the new system. Problem #3 In the organizational structure of MCSS, there was a lack of communication, which failed to address the increasing problems that resulted in loss of control. Solution Mr. Lassiter, being the manager of sales and marketing, should have addressed the entire organization of the new system changes. He did not even address the full system conversion to several of his own staff members. Also, Mr. Lassiter anticipated Kovecki had studied the documentation, which he had not. • 13. Reflection Of Communication Analysis What is the tone of the meeting. The plan is to create a rational yet subjective tone that discusses expected results. This will ensure that while an adherence to data and facts are prevalent in the presentation, subjective considerations are presented and forwarded as important elements in the decision–making process. I will begin with an introduction of who I am, my experience and a clear statement of specifically why I feel I have been hired and what I can directly bring to the company (in this part I will try to engage those I feel we can initiate an alliance with while not directly antagonizing the limiters). Finally, I will end with a clear plan including our vision of communication. As stated previously, I will be as transparent as possible because of the need to create trust in myself and the communication division as a whole. The department vision presented initially will be quite lean and minimal with the focus being on quality over quantity. The focus of our energy will be on channels and tactics that have a better chance to deliver disproportional results to build momentum and support for our new department such as the go ahead for a communications audit and the need to invest in the necessary staff and infrastructure to achieve this. What are our goals going into the meeting? To create a presentation that has senior exec clearly understand the objectives of our plan. • 15. The World's Largest Solar Collectors And Energy Storage... We have many different kind of energy source in our world and the ocean is a big part of one of thought energy source. The ocean makes up more than 70% of the Earth's surface and it collects a lot of sun's heat and energy. This will make it the "world's largest solar collectors and energy storage system" and the Ocean Thermal Energy Conversion (OTEC) will probably seems like a great tool to have [7]. This energy source works is by using the solar energy collected from the sun by the ocean and converting that energy into electric energy. The OTEC uses the warm ocean water that was heated up from the sun (around 77 degrees Fahrenheit) to vaporize a working fluid with a low boiling point. The working fluid expands and spins a generator, creating electricity. From there, the vapor is then cooled down from the cold ocean water (around 41 degrees Fahrenheit) that is pumped up from the deep parts of the ocean layer. This cause the vapor to turn back into the working fluid from before and condenses back into a liquid. Because of this, the whole system is reusable and is a continually electricity generating cycle [7]. This is only one type out of three OTEC systems, known as closed–cycle system. The other two systems will be explain later on in the paper. This paper will explain different aspects of the OTEC systems, from the different types that are currently being used to the costs and environmental effect to the pros and cons of the OTEC systems. Ever since America has used inches, feet, and yards as standard measurement. However, while the U.S. continued to use the imperial system other countries progressed. In 1799, after the french revolution, France converted to the metric system. Invented by Gabriel Monton in France 1670, the metric system uses common powers of ten to measure weight and lengths so that it could be conveniently used with decimals. Soon the metric system had spread from France to Britain and most of the world. Countries now use the metric system to measure length, area, volume, mass, force, pressure, energy, power, and temperature. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... By converting to the metric system our trade would increase because there would no longer be a need to change between systems and other countries could view the modification as making amends. It could also save millions of dollars for the U.S. because large companies like NASA would all be on the same page using the metric system. Smaller mistakes could also be prevented by swapping to the much simpler metric system. One last thing the change would impact is education. If kids no longer had to learn two measurement systems they would have more time to learn other material. Plants get it from taking carbon dioxide from the oxygen that is in the air. Plants then use this and the sunlight's energy to make food for themselves. Animals get energy by eating the plants or eating other animals that have eaten those plants. During cell respiration, oxygen and food both provide energy. Respiration makes then carbon dioxide, which is then put out into the atmosphere. But if there is too much carbon dioxide in the atmosphere, there needs to be a solution to reduce it so no harm is caused to the Earth. Photosynthesis is the biological conversion of light energy into chemical energy. It occurs in green plants and photosynthetic bacteria through a series of many biochemical reactions (Ensminger,2014). The equation for photosynthesis is 6CO2+6H2O+light energy → C6H1206+6O2. Cellular Respiration is the process by which organisms combine oxygen with food stuff molecules, diverting the chemical energy in these substances into life sustaining processes and discarding, as waste products, carbon dioxide and water (Cell Respiration,2017). The equation for cellular respiration is C6H1206+6O2 → 6H2O+ 36 ATP. Photosynthesis are green plant who create their own food and it takes place in the chloroplast of the plant cells. There are many different factors that can affect the rate of photosynthesis, those being light intensity, the temperature of the water, the amount of carbon dioxide in the water, and the color of the light. In this experiment we chose to alter the color of light that was used in the process involving the aquatic plant Elodea while maintaining the other 3 factors. This experiment was conducted to see how much of an effect the color of the light played in the amount of carbon dioxide produced in the process of photosynthesis. We measured the amount of NaOH that was needed to color the water pink and then converted the net difference of drops into the net volume of carbon dioxide that was produced or consumed. The results showed that there was not a significant difference in the amount of carbon dioxide produced when using a standard regular colored light bulb compared to a green light bulb. Introduction Elodea, an aquatic plant, is very commonly used in classrooms around the world to help teach the process of photosynthesis (Berkeley 2015). • 45. The Importance Of The Conversion Of Lower Energy Light Upconversion is a term that characterizes the conversion of lower–energy light, particularly in the near–infrared region, into higher–energy light within the visible spectrum. This occurs through a process in which the sequential absorption of multi–photon near–infrared light yields the emission of light that is of shorter wavelength[1]. This process is represented in Figure 1, which shows the emissions of light within the visible spectrum after excitation of various dopant ions by near– infrared light[1]. The upconversion effect has been observed primarily in the rare–earth metals of the lanthanides as well as yttrium, and scandium; however, some transition metals and actinides can also display this effect[2]. Lanthanide ions display special inner–shell arrangements of 4fn 5d0–1, which allow for unique energy levels and provide shielding from the outer shells[2]. Due to their various f–orbital configurations, lanthanide ions are able to display very sharp luminescence emissions via intra–4f or 4f–4d transitions[2,3]. The importance of the lanthanide ions is evident in several applications including applications in lasers, bioprobe applications, optical imaging, and photodynamic therapy [2,3]. This is due to their fluorescent properties, which include: resistance to photobleaching, monochromaticity, large Stokes shifts, narrow bandwidth, and long emission lifetime[2,3]. This enormous amount of free energy needs to be harvested because natural resources are running out. Peak oil production in the United States was reached in 1970 and the global peak could be coming soon. When oil begins to run out, how will humans continue to live the way we are now? The answer to this is the sun. The sun is the most reliable and abundant source of energy that humans can use to create electricity. Solar thermal energy can be easily confused with solar panel energy production, so it is important to distinguish between the two. This form of energy production has many advantages to its use, but also some disadvantages that might drive away potential new users. It is important to differentiate between solar thermal and solar panel technology because it can be very easy to confuse the two. Solar thermal electric energy generation uses light from the sun to create heat. The heat that is generated from the sun is used to run a heat engine, which turns a generator to make electricity (Novosel and Jurij 2017). The fluid that is heated by the sunlight that is concentrated is usually a liquid or a gas. Some examples of the fluids and gasses used are water, water and salts, air, nitrogen, helium, and so on (Novosel and Jurij 2017). • 59. My Career In Energy Technology Background My career in energy technology began in 2012, when I started my master's coursework and research in electrochemistry at the University of Louisville's Department of Chemistry. Since then, I have developed an extensive skillset, focusing mainly on the development and usage of semiconductor materials such as titanium oxide (TiO2), tin–oxide (SnO2), birnessite–manganese oxide (b–MnO2), and neodymium oxide (Nd2O3). I have extensively studied the photophysics and photochemistry of energetic nanomaterials in order to explore the fundamentals of charge transfer dynamics, catalytic properties, and mechanisms for the conversion of solar energy to electric energy to produce renewable energy. I was trained in scanning probes, surface ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Understanding the basic science behind any new technology is the backbone for further development for commercialization. I chemically linked gold nanoparticles and a molecular conductor to prepare high efficiency solar cells. Recently, I employed the hybrid structure of rare earth materials and TiO2 nanoparticles as another strategy in the development of high efficiency solar cells. Rare earth materials are new to the research in solar cells. The current guidelines for the preparation of solar cells in the Department of Chemistry at the University of Louisville are based directly on my research. My work on lithium ion batteries, where I prepared mesoporous b–MnO2 as a cathode material, has been heavily cited world–widely and becoming a guideline for innovative new energy storage devices. After completing my doctoral degree at the University of Louisville, I turned my focus to the surface chemistry of nanomaterials for preparing bioconjugates, a continuation of my work on surface chemistry on nanomaterials. In another work during the postdoctoral research period, I was able to publish a work on dielectrophoresis manipulation of metal nanoparticles to increase substantially the amount of frequency of collisions (by the factor of 101–103) of the metal nanoparticles with the surface of ... • 61. Energy Conversion And Its Effect On Climate Energy conversion has been essential in every human activity since the prehistoric age. A basic extent of the evolution of society is directly associated with the changes in the fundamental sources of energy and its uses. Through the last 250 years, people have learned how to harvest and deal with energy in different forms to make work easier and live more comfortable. Nevertheless, this human activity is overloading the atmosphere with greenhouse gases emission, which make the temperature higher, trap heat and generates serious and harmful impacts on the environment and on climate. Therefore, the governments all around the world are making an effort to promote and develop renewable energy as the new main energy source. All started with human's dependence on their muscular power to survive; after that, they learned how to use animal force and fire, and slowly new tools and energy sources were being developed and discovered, from agriculture to the big move by the wind and water power. Furthermore, in the middle of the 18th century occurred the Industrial Revolution, also known as the energy revolution, when the use of coal and steam engines started, causing an accelerated growth of cities and population. In addition, this revolution encourage future creations and discoveries, such as the internal–combustion engines, use of natural gas, electricity and oil. From the end of the 19th century on, the use of fossil fuel and electricity resulted in an almost ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

A Brief Report On Energy Conversion Name: Ancil Ravi Seegobin ID #: 54154 Status: Full–Time Programme: Bachelors in Applied Science (Utilities) Course: Electromechanical Energy Conversion Course Code: EGYA3001 Lecturer: Dr. Adel Elgammal Date due: October, 1st, 2016. Report 1 Summary This report revolves around Michael Faraday and his discovery as one of the greatest scientist in the 19th century. He was born in Newington, Surrey, England, on September 22, 1791. Faraday was self–taught he only went to school at 13 and got a basic education. He then attended lectures after he read book of scientific subjects while he worked as a book binder. In 18th century Faraday discovered electromagnetic induction, the principle behind numerous medical, industrial, technological and other applications. Faraday's law explains the relation between a time varying magnetic field and an induced electric field. Electric Generator Generators transform mechanical energy to electrical energy. The AC generator consists of a loop of wire mostly rectangular which is rotated by some external means in a magnetic field as seen in the diagram below. The source of mechanical energy may vary widely from a hand crank to an internal combustion engine in the diagram below show that a hand crank was used. Diagram 1: Showing the coil placed between a constant magnetic field with slip rings Faraday discovered that the flow of electric charges could be induced by moving an electrical coil or conductor that contains electric ... • 65. Thermal Energy Conversion Essay The demand for an efficient renewable energy source is a driving force in ongoing research. Thermal energy conversion is one such potential source that is under constant investigation and has endless avenues of possibility. The two requirements of energy production are efficiency and renewability. Many possibilities exist for energy production including: Fossil Fuels (natural gas, oil, coal, oilshale), nuclear, solar, wind, geothermal, biomass and wastes, & hydroelectric. Efficiency of the use of these resource are directly related to the location and the demand in that location. For example Hawaii is a prime candidate for the use of the oceans mechanical wave action, the thermal gradient of the ocean, wind, and biomass from the high ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... There are three types of energy converters producing electricity: closed cycle, open cycle, and a hybrid system combining the previous two systems. Closed cycle OTEC systems use the warm surface water to boil a fluid that has a low boiling point (e.g. ammonia). The pressure caused by the expanding vapor is then used to turn a turbine. The turbine then turns a generator to produce electricity. Cold water is then used to recycle the vapor back to a condensed state and the cycle is repeated. An open cycle system directly boils the warm surface water. Operating at low pressure, the steam that is created is channeled in turn to a turbine engine. The water vapor is condensed again by cold water. If the condensed water is kept seperate from the cold seawater it can be used for consumption or agriculture. Other by–products produced by the open cycle OTEC are a variety of minerals. Both cycles produce electricity through the use of solar warmed water. Steam Powered Turbine Engine Capturing the power of steam is not a new idea but one that has been used for hundreds of years. A jet of steam can readily do work on an object by the jet propolsion effect of steam escaping through a small guided hole or by a stream colliding with a system of paddle wheels. Most early steam powered machines used the principles of the latter. The system of paddles, or turbine, was used to drive a shaft which in turn could drive any number of gear or belt driven mechanisms. The ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 67. Pilgrim Case Essay TO: Professor Simon FROM: DATE: May 19th, 2014 OBJECT: Equity Contribution for Pilgrim Assurance Building On behalf of David Bailey, there have been individuals looking into the property located at 795 Atlantic Avenue. As an investor, Bailey is interested in making an offer on the property however he is trying to make his offer look more attractive than the competitors. With thorough research, he has found ways that would improve the building and in turn generate a larger yearly cash flow while still being able to improve the building. Bailey was also considering converting the current office space building into condominium units but that was strictly dependent on the revenue that could be generated from doing so. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... III. POSSIBLE SOLUTIONS If Bailey were to outbid the competitors and successfully purchase the building there are a variety of options that Bailey could engage in in order to improve the building. The first option would be to keep Pilgrim as a tenant in the building. By doing this he would secure 100,000 square feet of space at $26 /sq. ft generating about $2,600,000 in rental income just from Pilgrim. Also with keeping the space as office space, Bailey found that he would be able to fill in two out of the four floors of the atrium adding an additional 10,000 in rentable square footage. This was something that none of the other competitors had noticed. Bailey also noticed that he would be able to renovate all 20 bathrooms within the building but that his renovation would be about 15,000 cheaper than his competitors. Continuing with the renovations, Bailey saw that the atrium would need to be upgraded and instead of it costing him around $200,000, which would be the cost to his competitors, he had the ability to save $50,000 by reusing the marble in the bathrooms as the floor and walls of the atrium. Taking into consideration all of the upgrades and renovations, as well as the fact that Bailey would be able to manage the building at 0.50/ sq ft compared to his competitors which were managing at $1.25/ sq ft, the value at which Bailey would place on keeping the building an office space would be $3,433,649.13 (see ... • 69. The 's Theory Of Energy Conversion The first mode of knowledge conversion enables an organization to convert tacit knowledge through facilitating interaction between individuals (Bashar Sarayreh 2012). Individuals in this case, can gain tacit knowledge without necessarily having to communicate by means of language. Instead, tacit knowledge can be converted into tacit knowledge through practice, imitation and observation. An example of this form of knowledge conversion is demonstrated by apprentices who learn critical skills just by working alongside their mentors. Evidently, therefore, experience is a key cornerstone when it comes to an individual acquiring tacit knowledge. Nonaka's theory of energy conversion suggests that it is enormously difficult for individuals to share their thinking processes without keenly sharing their experiences (Bashar Sarayreh 2012). A common feature of this form of conversion is emotional attachment to shared experiences. As a result of this, the spiral model calls the process of creating tacit knowledge by sharing experiences, socialization. Conversion of explicit knowledge to explicit knowledge on the other hand requires the incorporation of social processes in order to combine various forms of explicit knowledge possessed by different individuals. Under this arrangement, individuals share knowledge through meetings or telephone conversations. Reconfiguration of existing information through acts such as adding or sorting information can consequently lead to creation of newer ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 71. Alternative Future Energy Storage And Conversion Systems Metal–air batteries have been intensively explored as an alternative future energy storage and conversion systems owing to their intrinsically high energy and power densities, the relatively mature research on air electrode, and cost effective composition of non–noble fuel electrode, as well as in response to the high energy demand for portable devices and electric vehicles even stationary power plants [1–5]. Of late, research into the metal–air techniques has been focused on Zn–air (~1,000 Wh kg–1), Li–air (~13,000 Wh kg–1), and Ge–air (~1,500 Wh kg–1) batteries because of its very high specific energy and energy density with open cell air cathode structure [3–6]. With these devices, however, the electrochemical energy could be stored in the stationary part as form of sacrificial metal anode. This distinct architecture would make a limitation approach for large–scale commercialization unless the anode can provide good electrochemical reversibility and high cyclic durability. As a feasible alternative to continuous operation, recently, a high temperature liquid metal–air energy storage cell (LMAESC) in conjunction with a solid oxide electrolyte has been investigated applying post–transition metals such as In [7], Sn [7–17], Sb [18–25], Pb [7], and Bi [12] as a sacrificial electrode, so–called liquid metal anode (LMA). Since these liquid metals has relatively low melting point, it can improve the anode polarization by incorporating liquid wetting materials to spread on the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Ais Implementation Case Study Essay Professional Salon Concepts Project III Kirstin Johnson DeVry University Abstract Steve Cowan is the owner of a distribution company of salon hair products. The company, Professional Salon Concepts, (PSC) was growing and decided to upgrade their AIS to support the demands of the company. Steve hired Mike, his brother–in–law to assist him and the two of them began to research the different products available believing they could better determine the needs of the company than a consultant could. After a short time they bought first one and then changing their minds and bought a second system. After a short training period the new system was installed with some very problematic first few days. Eventually the system was up ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Missing Features How could PSC have avoided the problem of the missing features? If PSC had gotten RFPs the problem of missing features in the system they chose would have been eliminated during the vendor selection process. However, in the route they did take those features that were important to Steve but were not included in the AIS could have been included by having a systems requirements list and a written contract with the specifications explicitly written out. Conversion and Reporting How could PSC have avoided some of the conversion and reporting problems it faced? As I stated before, more time was needed in the testing and training portion of the conversion before the new AIS went online. One trick I learned from our own system change at the city I work in is to train a few operators on the new systems during the testing phase and then have them train a few more in their own departments. By using your own employees to train each other they are gaining a better understanding of how the system works. This way on the day of the change you have more people who understand the system and how to fix or correct the things that can go wrong. The more people you can have trained this way before the system change the better off you will be at the critical moment. Steve's Analysis Steve's analysis of the numbers is incomplete in my opinion. • 78. Solar Energy Is The Conversion Of Power From The Sun Research Paper – Solar Energy Blakely J. Phillips BGEN 440, Montana State University – Billings Introduction Solar energy is the conversion of power from the sun to usable electricity (Alternative Energy, 2014). The most common source of solar energy utilizes photovoltaic cells to convert sunlight into electricity (Alternative Energy, 2014). Photovoltaics use a semi–conductor to absorb the radiation from the sun, creating and emitting electrons, which are then harnessed and used as electricity (Alternative Energy, 2014). Pros of Solar Energy There are many advantages of using solar energy. It is renewable, abundant, sustainable, environmentally friendly, and more. Solar energy is a renewable energy source, which means that unlike non–renewable energy sources such as fossil fuels, coal, and nuclear energy, we cannot run out of solar energy (Maehlum, 2014). As long as the sun is alive, which according to NASA is another 6.5 billion years, we will have access to solar energy (Maehlum, 2014). The true potential of solar energy is astounding and overly abundant. The surface of Earth receives 120,000 terawatts of solar radiation, better known as sunlight, which is 20,000 times more energy than what is needed to supply power to the entire world (Maehlum, 2014). Solar energy is not only abundant and renewable it is also sustainable and environmentally friendly. As a sustainable energy source, solar energy is able to meet the needs of the present without compromising ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
