10 Things I Hate About You Movie Analysis
Introduction/Plot: (Rachel)
Romantic comedy films, also known as "rom–coms" or "romedies", are films with light–hearted, humorous plot lines, centred on romantic
ideals such as that true love is able to surmount most obstacles. Romantic comedy films are a sub–genre of both comedy and romance
films.

10 Things I Hate About You is one of Hollywood's greatest Romantic Comedies. Directed by Gil Junger, the 1999 film is a retelling of
Shakespeare's well–known comedy, The Taming of the Shrew, presented in a contemporary American High School setting.

However her Father's strict rules say she isn't allowed to date until her older sister Kat does. After much pulling of strings and convincing,
Bianca and Cameron set the dour damsel up with Padua High's bad boy Patrick Verona so they can have a love story of their own.

10 Things I Hate About You can be classified as a romantic–comedy as Lazar has reinforced many of the generic conventions in his
composition. More specifically, this film takes the form of a screwball comedy. Among the first examples of the romantic–comedy genre,
screwball comedies were popular in the 1930s. By pitting the male and female against each other, they presented the 'battle of the sexes',
where the characters were antagonists until they later came to the realisation that they could not live without each other. In a screwball
comedy, the female lead needed 'taming'.

Romantic Comedies Teach Women Of Stalking
The depicted definition of romance is aspired by every individual who yearns to be wooed in order to fall in love with their beloved one.
Romantic strategies have been defined by society throughout centuries and has resulted in the upbringing of new ways of pursuing a lover.
A man serenating a woman can be demonstrated through the actions of bringing flowers, planning a dinner, or writing intimate verses.
Today, it is unquestionable that an individual who is in pursue of a lover will do everything in their power to obtain the heart of their
beloved one. However, romantic comedies that are being produced in Hollywood have been influencing the definition of what "romance"
is and how stalking can be consider to be romantic. The articles, "Romantic Comedies: When Stalking Has a Happy Ending," by Julie
Beck and "Romantic Comedies Teach Women that Stalking is a Compliment," by Chloe Angyal demonstrate how romantic comedies
influence individuals to perceive stalking as romantic and a form of a complement.

The actions an individual takes in order to pursue his or her lover has been seen as a form of a complement and dismiss signs of potential
dangerous stalking situations. The romantic movies that are being display today show how "...characters in romantic comedies also engage
in stalking that's depicted as proof of true love and passion" (Angyal). The study conducted by Julia Lippman concludes how "watching
romanticized, seemingly realistic portrayals of stalking behavior...made women more likely to accept stalking behavior as desirable"
(Angyal). However, this can cause women to have no discernment when an individual is showing potential signs of stalking. Moreover,
"when women accept stalking myths...they're socialized to perceive abusive behavior as flattering..."

Farrelly Brothers Theme
1. Subject/Theme– Undoubtedly considered one of the most popular and successful romantic comedies of all time, There's Something
about Mary by the Farrelly Brothers, was, for the most part, acclaimed by both critics and audiences. As a romantic comedy, the deepest
and most underlying subject/theme of the film has to be love, yet there are so many layers of lesser subjects and themes that collectively
contribute to the ultimate theme of love that it's a wonder how it all comes together so effortlessly. The statement that the film makes
about the subject of love is that it is both fickle and everlasting at the same time; fickle, because one small injury like the one Ted
experienced on the day of his high school prom where his genitals got caught ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
While I do not believe there were any standout scenes, aside from the one where Mary's hair was standing up after she applied what she
thought was hair gel to it, that does not mean any of the scenes were sub par. Quite the contrary...the scenes were perfect for what the film
wanted to accomplish. At the end, because of all these separate elements of the film which came together effortlessly, viewers are able to
relate to Ted in a way that directors and producers wanted all along, allowing for maximum emotional effect to take place, which
subsequently allows viewers to relate to the film as a whole, guaranteeing the film's ultimate

Relationship Between Media And Relationships
Graeme Wright Emma Hudelson 11/15/17 FYS Media and Relationships Media has existed in our lives for centuries. It is a continuously
developing force that has taken over our world today. In recent history, films were one of the most popular sources of media and highly
influential on the minds of many throughout the world. It gave people certain ideals and stereotypes of how things should be. Today, film
is not the only prominent media source, social media has made its mark. Mark Zuckerberg's creation of Facebook was the first major type
of social media when it was released in 2004. Since then, Instagram, Twitter, and Snapchat have become the three most prominent sources
of social media that follow in facebook's footsteps. According to Statista , Humans consume over 12 hours of media each day. The 12
hours we spend on media is full of possible love damaging influences. The view of real love has been altered in recent years due to "fake
love." According to Chuck Klosterman, the media has affected the way that humans interpret love in a negative light but, while this is the
case, it's also imperative to show that people can differentiate between what is fake and what is real. Social media is a common culprit of
permitting "fake love." Millennials are the up and coming crop of people looking for love. Social media plays a major role in the lives of
these teens and young adults, which can negatively impact their chances of finding "real love." Facebook negatively influences

Romantic Comedy Analysis
Romantic Comedies. We all know of at least one. Chances are we all have one that we could watch over and over again. But, why? What
makes romantic comedies so appealing? Why do so many people like them? The Incredible Jessica James is a romantic comedy, that is
also an adult's coming of age movie, but not your typical one. A typical romcom plays love as an almost insignificantly light hearted joke.
While love is still joked about, it isn't quite as light hearted in The Incredible Jessica James. When people think of a rom com we typically
think of one like: Sleepless in Seattle, You've Got Mail, How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days, 10 Things I Hate About You, or Pretty in Pink.
The Incredible Jessica James doesn't match up to those movies in a couple of ways. The Incredible Jessica James doesn't completely shy
around the politics of today's society, it starts off light but gradually becomes a little more serious, shows the struggles of dating when two
people start out not completely over their exes, and is even relatable to some people whose parents have had a rough divorced. Jessica
Jones was made to be relatable more than the idealistic romantic comedy where they always end up together. Politics; it is everywhere so
why shouldn't we expect it in our movies? Jessica James is passionate about three things in this movie: her opinions (politics), theater, and
honesty. Her political views are showcased in one particular scene: her sister's baby shower. Her gift while thoughtful is

Romanticism In Annie Hall
Annie Hall is a 1977 American romantic comedy film directed by Woody Allen from a screenplay co–written by him and Marshall
Brickman. Charles H. Joffe who was Woody Allen's manager at that time produced the film and the film's director played the leading
male, Woody Allen, as Alvy "Max" Singer, who is a hostile man who tries to figure out the reasoning for his failure in relationships with
the film's female lead, who is played by Diane Keaton. Annie Hall is not seen as a traditional romantic film, due to the fact that the
stereotype that the viewer has about romantic films are reversed.
Unlike other romantic films Annie Hall starts with the story of the break up and the audience is only introduced to the beginning of the
relationship 25 minutes into the film. They meet at a tennis club and immediately after their meeting things turn awkward, and what

The initiation of the first meeting was done by Annie which is quite unusual because society believes that woman should be courted by the
ma. Annie's dress code throughout the film is very masculine with her fitted suits and ties, she is not seen as the conventional girly–girl
stereotype. Annie also owns and drives her own car which once again is the position that a make has to show superiority, this puts Alvy in
a feminine position. The role change is seen clearly in the scene when they move in together when Alvy says: "I don't want you to live
with me!? Whose idea was it?" (Annie Hall and Annie replies: "mine" then Alvy subverts under her and replies with: "yeah, it was yours,
actually, but I approved it immediately". One can clearly see that Annie 'wears the pants' in the relationship which is unlike a conventional

Romantic Comedy Films: Notting Hill And The Screwball Era
Romantic comedy films are mostly films that are centered on romantic beliefs such as true love being able to overcome all obstacles. The
prime era of romantic comedy was the screwballs; which primarily took place between 1934– 1944. This period was known as the
Screwball Era. "The screwball variant of romantic comedy is particularly unrealistic, fast–paced, and unsentimental. One of the main
reasons of this is because of censorship. (Romantic Comedy Reading pg.4) Romantic comedies continue to become more realistic as time
moves on. The main theme of a romantic comedy film is that two characters, usually a man and woman meet and then part ways because
of an argument. Many times the two lead characters meet and fall for each other at the very ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Notting Hill is a 1999 British romantic comedy film that was filmed in London. "Although the plot is unconventional for romantic
comedy, the setting Notting Hill which is a residential district in London might not seem conductive to the nurture of romantic love
because of the absence of nature, and of privacy in the metropolis". (Notting Hill Essay pg.4) This film is really romantic film with intense
heartfelt quality that is shown throughout the film. This is your typical tale of romance that is facing adversity along the way. The film
starts with both characters on a level playing field, with both characters leading pretty successful and happy lives. One of the many
examples of film techniques used is shown right from the opening scene as the audience is given a great example of non–digetic sound.
Anna's role is signified before we even see her on screen as we hear the audience cheering for Anna while a presenter is giving a speech.
Julia must keep this very low as she is a famous movie star and doesn't want her affairs being leaked out to the papers. During their first
encounter the audience gets a great example of mise–en–scene. This example comes from the costumes that the main characters are
wearing while meeting for the first time. We notice Grant wearing an open button down shirt symbolizing a calm and casual look while
Anna is trying not to be noticed by wearing all black with sunglasses. Once this encounter is concluded Anna realizes that there is only
way to see him again without the affair reaching the papers. This is the main theme in many romantic comedy films as the main characters
meet through unusual scenarios. Julia gets him to go to a press banquet at the London West End Hotel, and Grant pretends to be one of the
journalists that are covering this event. This is really a great job by the screenwriters, as this scene is well observed and shows us that love
between the two is there. It shows that

Romantic Comedy
Romantic Comedy has been around for many generations enticing the public with ideas of love and romance in a humorous way.
According to Dictionary.com Romantic Comedy is defined as, "a movie or play that deals with love in a light, humorous way." For all
romantic comedies to make this happen, they follow three simple rules. Boy meets girl, boy loses girl, boy gets girl back. As Brian
Finnigan from The Five Golden Rules of Romantic Comedy says, "Different but the same, He wants She Wants, turmoil, and learning
curves". Although these technical terms are different, they mean the same thing. Today that may look a little different but this is a staple
part of romantic comedy that makes it different ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
There was not much luck.
Animal comedy came during the late 70s and 80s. Due to the lack of character growth between the beginning and the end of the movie,
these films are great for sequels. Characteristically, animal comedy is about pigs who want to have meaningless sex with women, and due
to the lack of character change, at the end of the movie, the characters still want to have meaningless sex with women.
The most used Romantic comedy style today is Modern American Romantic Comedy. The woman is portrayed to be equal to the man. A
great example that really changed the way romantic comedy was viewed was When Harry Met Sally. Women gave their point of view on
relationships and could express equality with men. As James Murphy from moviereal.com states, "Can men and women ever be just
friends? Is it possible to move on from the one you love? Is love at first sight ever true love? Is there just one person for everyone? Can I
be a big corporate superman AND a decent human being? Etc." These are some questions from romantic comedies that prove the point
that women were viewed differently in this film and that caused movies the future movies to change the way the portray women and men
together.
Finally, Geek Comedy began in 1998. Like animal comedy the characters start out wanting to have meaningless sex with the opposite sex.
The difference is there is a character change throughout the storyline and by the end of the

As You Like It a Romantic Comedy
The major conventions of Shakespearean Romantic Comedy are:
The main action is about love.
The would–be lovers must overcome obstacles and misunderstandings before being united in harmonious union. The ending frequently
involves a parade of couples to the altar and a festive mood or actual celebration (expressed in dance, song, feast, etc.) A Midsummer
Night's Dream has four such couples (not counting Pyramus and Thisbe!); As You Like It has four; Twelfth Night has three; etc.
Frequently (but not always), it contains elements of the improbable, the fantastic, the supernatural, or the miraculous, e.g. unbelievable
coincidences, improbable scenes of recognition/lack of recognition, willful disregard of the social order (nobles marrying ... Show more

Shakespeare's early romantic comedy most indebted to John Lyly is Love's Labour's Lost (c. 1588–97), a confection set in the never–never
land of Navarre where the King and his companions are visited by the Princess of France and her ladies–in–waiting on a diplomatic
mission that soon devolves into a game of courtship. As is often the case in Shakespearean romantic comedy, the young women are sure of
who they are and whom they intend to marry; one cannot be certain that they ever really fall in love, since they begin by knowing what
they want. The young men, conversely, fall all over themselves in their comically futile attempts to eschew romantic love in favour of
more serious pursuits. They perjure themselves, are shamed and put down, and are finally forgiven their follies by the women.
Shakespeare brilliantly portrays male discomfiture and female self–assurance as he explores the treacherous but desirable world of sexual
attraction, while the verbal gymnastics of the play emphasize the wonder and the delicious foolishness of falling in love.
In The Taming of the Shrew (c. 1590–94), Shakespeare employs a device of multiple plotting that is to become a standard feature of his
romantic comedies. In one plot, derived from Ludovico Ariosto's I suppositi (Supposes, as it had been translated into English by George

My Big Fat Greek Wedding

vehicle for constructed messages and values intended for a specific audience. Colloquially referred to as "chick flicks", this specific genre
is targeted to women in order to depict the Hollywood standard of how women should act, as well as the composition of an ideal
relationship. Romantic comedies often strongly enforce unrealistic portrayals of romance, which alters women's expectations of a normal

Stereotypes And Women: Types Of Women In Romantic Comedies
Gender is a social definition of men and women. It is determined by the actions and roles men and women perform in society and public.
However as demonstrated by the arguments in Paul Theroux "Being a Man", Willa Cather "My Antonia", Mindy Kaling "Types of Women
in Romantic Comedies Who are Not Real" and Adrienne Rich "Taking Women Students Seriously" stereotypes are what define one's
perspective not gender.
As an indication that stereotypes define one's perspective is that all men are manly. "This version of masculinity is a little like having to
wear an ill–fitting coat for one's entire life. Even the expression 'Be a man!' Strikes me...Man means 'manly'...yet it is part of every man's
life." In this quote Theroux is pointing out that "masculinity is a little like having to wear an ill–fitting coat for one's entire life." The

that in Romantic Comedies, women seem to be flawless. She argues that "she constantly falls down." The problem is that in Romantic

Romantic Comediess : Life, Love, And Characteristics
"I love romantic comedies. I like to watch them and I like to be in them. It's something that's increasingly difficult to find that spark of
originality that makes it different than the ones that come before" (Julia Roberts). Romantic comedies are a blessing to this earth. They
provide us a foundation on characters, in addition to laughter, sadness, love, passion, hope, and of course, a happy ending. Each romantic
comedy has a story of its own waiting to be told. This is my romantic comedy.
Act 1 Scene 1:
It opens on a girl with brown hair, a face full of freckles, and two large ears, ones that are really too big for her body. You can tell she is
different, that something is there, some kind of untapped potential. This girl doesn't want to just pass through life, but wants to live it,
preferably on stage. She grew up in a family where she was taught to give back to the world no matter the price. She went to a Montessori
school from kindergarten to 8th grade, where she was taught real life problems and circumstances. Since the school was located in Davie,
Fl, there was a barn on campus. As she grew up at this school, she had to become more involved with campus life, to reaching the summit
of walking the goats on leashes to rubbing oil on the pigs backs to prevent them from dehydration. The school trained her to be a strong,
spirited, and hardworking individual, that instilled out–of the box thinking and problem solving. It forced her to be self motivated, set her
own goals, and work hard to achieve them. She had extreme focus and was driven by her studies. This form of education laid the
foundation of the person she is today.
Act 1 Scene 2:
Sitting on her living room floor, watching Barbra Streisand captivate the screen in Hello Dolly, there was an instant connection, something
that drove this girl to follow what she was doing, theatre and more importantly performing. It was love at first sight, or should I say first
show. She had an instant connection with it and knew that she could never love anything else in this world. It kept her awake at night
tossing and turning, pondering all the possibilities this relationship could bring. In Romantic Comedies, you fight for love worth fighting

Similarities Between Hitch And Along Came Polly
Romantic Comedies: Hitch vs. Along Came Polly In 2004, John Hamburg–directed a movie named "Along Came Polly", a romantic
comedy about betrayal and love. A year later Andy Tennant conducted "Hitch", a movie based on men attracting the opposite sex. Both
films take place in New York and illustrate the emotional and physical traits the main characters experience on an everyday life. In the
movie "Hitch" Alex Hitchens is a sentimental advisor, and he teaches clients how to date the woman they fell in love with. On the other
hand, Reuben Feffer finds the love of his life after being cheated on by his previous bride. The films have differences such as the main
characters' careers and their personalities. Yet, it also has similarities for example, Reuben and Alex has food allergies. In "Along Came

clients make financial decisions. He has his whole life planned and spends his time minimizing risk in order to avoid danger. In the movie

attention. The Break–Up shows the heartache of what happens when people don't communicate, because sometimes it is too late once the
heart is so broken.

When people get comfortable in their relationship they tend to take advantage of the other. The characters, Brooke and Gary, show a
couple that fell into the slump of not truly talking and listening, they quit showing interest in the others pursuits, and lost appreciation for
each other. At the end of the movie, Gary said, "I'm just saying we shouldn't wait so long the next time before we catch up," and Brooke
replied with, "We have a lot more to talk about" (The Break–Up). Don't wait until the end to talk to your significant other. Neither person
realized how they got to this point in their relationship. Brooke said, "I just don't know how we got here. Our entire relationship, I have
above and beyond for you, for us. .........And I just don't feel like you appreciate any of it. I don't feel you appreciate me. All I want is to
know, is for you to show me you care" (The Break–Up). This suggests to viewers do not get lazy on your relationship, remember to show
one another appreciation for each other's time, and value the fact they chose to be with you. Also, doing the crazy antics to get the other's
attention is time consuming and in the end often times is do not work. Brooke thought by breaking up with Gary he would come to her

Shylock 's Tragedy And Its Toll On Romantic Comedy
Shylock's Tragedy and its Toll on Romantic Comedy The inclusion of Shylock in The Merchant of Venice by William Shakespeare adds a
complexity not typically found in romantic comedy. Shakespeare could have made Shylock's role a light mockery of anti–Semitism, or
something to that effect, but instead he chose to create a tragedy at the center of romance and comedy. This makes for a play, which does
not fit neatly into an assigned genre. Shylock's language in this passage, reveals several things, not only about the play, but also the other
characters. Through Shylock, the hypocrisy of the Christians is revealed. Shylock flips this romantic comedy on its head, and turns it into
something more significant. Pauses and repetitions give ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This can be seen in both the content and structure of Shylock's lines. Intentional pauses indicate Shakespeare's intention for an emotional
reading of Shylock. Pauses and repetition in this particular moment in the play suggest Shylock is at a loss for words, and caught up in his
grief: "The curse / never fell upon our nation until now–I never felt it / till now" (3.1.78–80). Jessica's choice to join her father's
persecutors is cruel. He pauses after this statement, perhaps because Jessica's betrayal is the worst type of betrayal against her heritage,
and against him. She causes Shylock, who has always had a hard exterior in spite of oppression and abuse, to feel the pain of his
persecution. This realization deserves pause, not only for Shylock, but also the audience. For Jessica to leave her father, in this particular
way, brings the mistreatment and pain of an entire nation to Shylock. Because his motivations seem somewhat convoluted at times, by
greed and revenge, these moments of intentional pause allow the audience time to realize the magnitude of Shylock's sorrow, and perhaps
his true motivation. The repetition in his language, demonstrates a shift in tone, from concise angry Shylock, to repetitive sad Shylock.
Repetition is used throughout the play for various dramatic effects. For example, in act three, scene three Antonio

The Relationship Between Pornography and the American Culture
An analysis of the relationship between pornography and the American culture reveals that the industry is blamed for dozens of social ills
for the men of our society. Those ills also work to damage the women in several irreparable ways. Some of the damages to men include:
illegal sexual behavior, illegal non–sexual behavior, callousness, sexual harassment, casual sex, and multiple sexual partners. The
problems for the women directly involved in the industry are long term and long lasting, creating overall issues that affect women's
economic and social status. But what are there damages caused by the type of movies most women love, the type of movies they drag their

A content analysis of two other highly consumer–rated films revealed an emphasis on several themes including fate, destiny, love at first
sight, and the idea that people will only be happy when they find the one, perfect mate who was made for them.
For this research paper, I reviewed two mainstream romantic comedies. The first was Something's Gotta Give (2003) and the second was
Playing For Keeps (2012). In each of these movies, the main male and female characters strived throughout the movie to find their one
and only true love. Overall, the former is a much better movie than the latter.
Something's Gotta Give featured a nearly over–the–hill life–long bachelor who had habitually dated women younger than 30 years old. In
fact, it is one 20–something who brings Harry, the main male character played by Jack Nicholson, to her mother's house for a fun weekend
for just the two of them. However, Harry and his young girlfriend fatefully discover that her mother is also staying at the home over the
weekend. During the early portion of the stay, Harry has a heart attack and his girlfriend's mother, Erica, saves him by hastily performing
CPR and directing her daughter to call an ambulance. Unknown to Harry and Erica, this act consummated their relationship and aligned
their destinies toward an eventual happy ending.
The movie contained several twists and turns along the way aimed at demonstrating to the audience and the characters that no matter what

Gender Roles And Social Cognitive Theory
Women model their behavior after the female protagonists they see in films because they see them being successful in love and wish for
the same. Women modeling this behavior are an example of social cognitive theory. In the 1980s, this theory was expanded by film
theorists who drew from different fields and since then many studies have been conducted to see how films influence society (Nannicelli).
Stereotypes in film influences society in the ways it portrays romance, explained by social cognitive theory; movies give a false illusion
for women to believe and unrealistic expectations of men and relationships.
The social cognitive theory suggests that people who watch romantic comedies glean some understanding from the films by observing the
actors behavior and take away from it how they should behave in their own relationships. Due to the unrealistic modeling of behavior that
the media gives society, following this example cannot possibly bring a desirable outcome. Hollywood's goal is to entertain their viewers
and make them fall in love with the story and characters, but viewers often don't realize this and after watching a romantic movie have a
longing for fairy tale love. Hollywood has created an unrealistic and unattainable love. Therefore, when women model their ideals for a
relationship off of the romantic–comedy genre, they are highly disappointed, ultimately causing themselves to once again go back to
living vicariously through the characters (Green).

Genre Of Romantic Comedy
Genre theory is a short cut of how we define films. Genre theory is used to help simplify which category a film is categorized. "A genre is
a type or category of film that can be easily identified by specific elements of its plot, setting, mise en scène, character types, or style.
Genres are not stagnant categories. The study of their evolution is nothing short of the study of film and the filmgoing public itself. When
we break down types of film into categories, we can then observe how they have changed over the years to reflect the tastes of the
audience while retaining the elements that put them into the genre in the first place." (Goodykoontz & Jacobs, 2014) One specific genre
and least flexible, is romantic comedy, which is ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

The Genre Of Romantic Comedy
The genre of romantic comedy has been successful throughout history. Men and women alike watch these films for several reasons, even
though they are "predictable." Whether it's for the comedy portrayed, or the love story itself, romantic comedies provide aspects of a story
that almost anyone can appreciate. Over time, people began to argue that contemporary romantic comedies have depreciated, but this does
not hold true. When comparing Judd Apatow's Knocked Up (2007), which is about a stoner low–life, played by Seth Rogan, who knocks
up co–star, Katherine Heigl, who plays Allison, to George Cukor's Adam's Rib (1949), which tells the story of two attorneys bickering
over their shared court case, there is a radical difference between the two films in their sheer content to portray a love story while sharing
the common romantic comedy plot, but one tells a superior love story.
The first notable difference between these films is the kind of humor utilized to articulate the story. According to David Denby, Knocked
Up's humor is vulgar and unnecessary, but the humor in this film is not unnecessary. The Knocked Up no doubt contains extremely
inappropriate and offensive humor compared to Adam's Rib, but comedy has evolved in response to a changing society. As written by
George Gerbner in Common Culture, (certain things were not allowed on screen). Comedy in Adam's Rib consisted of slapstick humor
associated with the "good ol' times" of the late 40's and 50's. The audience witnesses

"Friends with Benefits" vs. "Blended": Romantic Comedies
Several people believe women prefer romantic comedies, than action movies, but I could not find statistical researches about the topic.
The truth is that the majority of my girlfriends voted for romantic comedies, because these movies invigorate love, trust, inspiration, and
above all, happiness instead of sadness. Romantic movies are classic, kissing, love at first sight, heartbreaking love; however, romantic
comedies added the art of laughter, transforming romantic movies into attractive, and relaxing movies. It is a pleasure to watch romantic
movies; therefore, difficult to decide which one is my favorite. Recently, two of the movies I loved to watch were, "Friends with

the differences in the story plot, and character's roles, are the causes for the opinions received from spectators, critics and myself.
First, the differences, the story plot is essential to produce eye–catching movies, audiences has diverse preferences, even in the same issue.

Romantic Comedies: Roman Holiday And Notting Hill
The romantic comedy is a subgenre that has as its central narrative the quest for love that almost always ends with a successful conclusion.
It accents love in a light and upbeat manner while also frequently embracing sentimental or melodramatic story developments. Similar to
every other genre, it has a set of characteristics or conventions that allow the audience to know what to expect. The key traits that allow
one to recognize a movie as a romantic comedy are its realistic characters, traditional dating ritual, and slow story pacing. These
conventions of romantic comedies can be further understood by analyzing the narrative functions of two films that depict positive images
of true love and its power to transform one's life: Roman Holiday and Notting Hill.

twenty subjects were of college age and appeared to be at the store alone. I specially looked for the type of movie each person would
select. By doing this observation, I anticipated to see what people really choose. Since the subjects were unaware that I was watching

dishonest because they freely chose the movie without even realizing I was watching them.
A second route that I chose to collect data was to administer a survey to ten college age people. Of these ten people, five of them were
females and five of them were males. The survey was given to these people while they were in their college dorm rooms. There were six
questions on the survey, including a gender question, how many movies does the subject watch in an average month, and what are these

Essay on Romance Movies and Real Life Relationships
Today, romance is one of the most popular genres to watch on television. Unlike most, romance is a genre where the plot revolves around
the love between two main characters as they experience the highs and lows of love. "Common themes that revolve around romantic
movies are kissing, love at first sight, tragic love, destructive love, and sentimental love" (Taylor). These themes appear in many historical
films and the pattern still continues in modern films as well. Watching romantic movies has a giant negative influence on the viewer's

The article "Romantic Comedies Affect Beliefs About Relationships", written by Arlyn Riskind, suggests to readers that romantic films
are a major source for developing unrealistic expectations about love and relationships. "A survey of 335 undergraduate students in the
Midwest found a significant relationship between reporting watching romantic films often and belief in the ideals "love conquers all,"
"one and only" love (soul mate) and "love at first sight" (Riskind). These findings compliment the expectation that watching romantic
movies is a major source leading to the unrealistic expectations among viewers. In addition, romantic comedies also give the wrong
impression on relationships. If viewers are getting the wrong idea about love itself, then that leads them into expecting more out of
relationships as well. "Almost every romantic movie is generally targeted toward women and has the same basic format: Boy meets girl,
mutual feelings develop, conflicts arise and are overcome. Then, the story concludes with a happy ending as the two characters live
happily ever after together" (Hefner). The article "Contradictory Messages: A Content Analysis of Hollywood–Produced Romantic

Analysis Of Pretty Woman And The Proposal
Filmmakers have been making romantic comedies since the beginning of the art. The genre includes light–hearted scenes with two
beautiful main characters showing their idyllic struggle and journey to finding their love. The genre, most like most movies are not
realistic, but it proves great for escapism from your stressful everyday life. Romantic comedies, also poorly nicknamed as the 'chick–flick',
have almost sturdy societal gender roles representing the two main characters. One cis male and one cis female are typically shown. Pretty
Woman and The Proposal both show typical conventions seen in romantic comedies, although The Proposal does a much better job
appealing to a modern feminist audience. The movie appeals to the modern woman by not conforming to the stereotypical gender roles,
not glorifying materialism, and focusing more the two lead characters and their realistic flaws.
The man typically shows dominance and has a higher working status than the woman. This is clearly shown in Garry Marshall's Pretty
Woman. Julia Roberts is depicted as a low–class prostitute who falls in love with a wealthy businessman, Richard Gere. Many romcoms
made in the 90s through 2000s depicted this basic misogyny, but in the mid–2000s a romcom was released that went against the standards
of most movies in that genre. The Proposal directed by Anne Fletcher shows a powerful working woman depicted by Sandra Bullock, who

Romantic Comedies In The 1920's
Romance is a genre which has been going since the 1890's. Silent films were the starting point. These very short films in black and white
which involved two characters falling in love. They would only last around 7 minutes. Film makers described love films being about
desire and sex. In the 1920's to 50's, romantic films began to portray more painful love. The story line would involve two people who
didn't get on. They would then fall in love more towards the end. Over the years the romantic genre has been toyed with, trying to make
films to suit a wider ranged audience. This is how more sub–genres of romantic films were gradually produced. They would mix other
genres in with the romantic genre so films had more variety and suited more people's interests. Most romantic films are now of sub–genres

Breakfast At Tiffany 's A Romantic Comedy Essay
The movie Breakfast at Tiffany's is a romantic comedy about a single young woman who leads an unusual life. She is engaged in an
internal conflict about not conforming to the ideals of society yet she also cannot break free from the chains that hold her back. While the
movie is set in 1961, the ideals of society and actions of women in the 1950s really set the stage for the issues that Holly Golightly has to
face. It was an era of rapidly shifting sexual norms that were contradictory and contested (Rackley). Gender roles were driven by socially
accepted beliefs, behaviors and expectations (Holt). Women were beginning to feel empowered to take control of their own bodies and
lives even if this meant that they did not conform to social norms of gender roles. They were trying to break the stereotypes that existed
about women and were starting to become more vocal about their sexuality, their roles in society and women's rights. conform to any

Kennedy to announce the President's Commission on the Status of Women in late 1961, which was ultimately charged with the tasks of
finding ways to overcome sex based discrimination and allowing women to work while fulfilling roles as wives and mothers so they could

Punch Drunk Love Is Not A Romantic Comedy
Rom Com or Not?
Serendipity, How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days, Pretty Woman, Overboard, and Bridesmaids. What do all these movies have in common? For
one, they are all obviously romantic comedies. But, what makes them romantic comedies? Probably the most obvious trait they share is
that each of these movies creates a lighthearted, whimsical, and amused feeling for their viewers.. There are no times during the movies
that the audience feels uneasy or confused. The filmmakers for these movies also creates characters that the viewers like and root for. For
these reasons, Punch Drunk Love is not a romantic comedy. When compared to the previous examples it's clear that Punch Drunk Love
does not provide any of the traditional romantic comedy feelings. In fact, it makes the viewers feel anxious and very confused.
Additionally, the main characters are much different: they are awkward, to say the least, and the audience does not relate to or like them.
Clarity, light heartedness, and a positive relationship with the characters are important assets to be considered a romantic comedy.
Romantic comedies typically stick to certain conventions. The meet cute in rom coms is an important convention, that Punch Drunk Love
does not follow. Meet cutes are important because they can provide a certain feeling for the viewers. For example, in Serendipity the main
characters, John and Sara, meet on Christmas Eve at a department store, while reaching for the same pair of gloves. This meet cute gives

Pretty Wom An American Romantic Comedy
Pretty Woman is an American romantic comedy produced in 1990 by Touchstone Pictures. In the film, Vivian Ward, one of the central
characters, works as a prostitute in Los Angeles, California. Edward Lewis, a rich, businessman hires Vivian as an escort for a weeklong
period, to serve as his date to various functions and events. And over the course of the week, a relationship between the two matures.
Seeing that it focuses on the way in which a well–to–do, handsome man saves and transforms a pitiable prostitute into a beautiful woman
with class and style, the movie is considered a modern day Cinderella story. Although the film has all of the elements to be considered a
wonderful love story, several issues can be identified and critiqued, particularly those dealing with the portrayal of gender and sexual
scripts.
Gender is defined as the state of being male or female. Gender consists of the assortment of mental traits that differ between the sexes;
thus, gender scripts are the behavior expectations given to males and females. The characters in the movies either feed into or go against
gender scripts. Case in point, Edward is a wealthy businessman, and for that reason, his character feeds into the gender script of men being
breadwinners and guiders in patriarchal societies. For instance, Edward is displayed as a savior, a hero of some sort, due to the fact that he
takes Vivian off the streets, hires her, and transforms her into a well–rounded, respectable woman. Edward is also

Romantic Comedy Genre Analysis
Genre in film began as a sort of "commercial tool" which showed audiences recognizable film content in order to attract customers
(Campbell and Swenson). As the film industry grew, this content began to be more specialized, allowing the audience to know exactly
what to expect from the film they were seeing. For example, films within the same genre share the same myths, iconography, and
conventions. This means they have similarities in aspects such as plot, characters, themes, moods, ways of doing things particular to that
genre, and repeated visual and oral elements such as images and sounds. Often genre films are influenced by the social culture of the time
in which they are produced, and the content in the film tend to propose a solution to the current problems within society. These resolutions
are often portrayed by a main protagonists who is presented with a conflict; the film then concludes with the character reaching a solution
to the problem that is not only logical, but moral as well. Within the romantic comedy genre specifically, the storyline usually follows a
couple rather than a protagonist. The romantic comedy, or rom com, genre has often been ruled "a purely escapist and conservative genre,
accused of unquestioningly presenting unrealistic romantic fantasies for passive audiences" (MacDowell). From its earliest days, romantic
comedy films have mostly focused on finding romance and the idea that love is the key to a fulfilled and delighted life. However, this

Film Analysis Of The Graduate And Annie Hall
Before the 1960s there were plenty of films made. In the 1950s things began to change for, in my opinion, the better. It started with a new
form of acting called method acting that encouraged improvisation. This was key because it gave actors more control over their characters
which allowed for more realistic representations of characters allowing audiences to connect better to the film. Having more control over a
character is something that I found vital because it adds an even deeper element to the film as a whole. Another important thing added in
the 1950s was the addition of subject matters and themes that focused on ordinary individuals. This was important again because it added
another element to the films that audiences could connect to. In the 1960s there was even more change to the film industry. For example,
there was a new focus on youth, with psychological character studies of offbeat anti–heroes. More explicit presentation of sexuality,
violence and drug use on screen. Rebellion vs. the American mainstream, with new values and points of view. Self–conscious use of
cinematic effects, reflecting European influence and new twists on old film genre. These new changes can be seen in cinematic and
thematic elements in films including "The Graduate" and "Annie Hall." To start this film analysis, we'll start with "The Graduate" directed
by Mike Nichols. Cinematically there were a lot of things added in this film that shows these new features added to films in the

10 Things I Hate About You Movie Analysis

  • 1. 10 Things I Hate About You Movie Analysis Introduction/Plot: (Rachel) Romantic comedy films, also known as "rom–coms" or "romedies", are films with light–hearted, humorous plot lines, centred on romantic ideals such as that true love is able to surmount most obstacles. Romantic comedy films are a sub–genre of both comedy and romance films. **************************************************************************************************************** 10 Things I Hate About You is one of Hollywood's greatest Romantic Comedies. Directed by Gil Junger, the 1999 film is a retelling of Shakespeare's well–known comedy, The Taming of the Shrew, presented in a contemporary American High School setting. **************************************************************************************************************** ... After much pulling of strings and convincing, Bianca and Cameron set the dour damsel up with Padua High's bad boy Patrick Verona so they can have a love story of their own. **************************************************************************************************************** 10 Things I Hate About You can be classified as a romantic–comedy as Lazar has reinforced many of the generic conventions in his composition. More specifically, this film takes the form of a screwball comedy. Among the first examples of the romantic–comedy genre, screwball comedies were popular in the 1930s. By pitting the male and female against each other, they presented the 'battle of the sexes', where the characters were antagonists until they later came to the realisation that they could not live without each other. In a screwball comedy, the female lead needed 'taming'. **************************************************************************************************************** Here are some key conventions of the romantic comedy ... • 3. Romantic Comedies Teach Women Of Stalking The depicted definition of romance is aspired by every individual who yearns to be wooed in order to fall in love with their beloved one. Romantic strategies have been defined by society throughout centuries and has resulted in the upbringing of new ways of pursuing a lover. A man serenating a woman can be demonstrated through the actions of bringing flowers, planning a dinner, or writing intimate verses. Today, it is unquestionable that an individual who is in pursue of a lover will do everything in their power to obtain the heart of their beloved one. However, romantic comedies that are being produced in Hollywood have been influencing the definition of what "romance" is and how stalking can be consider to be romantic. The articles, "Romantic Comedies: When Stalking Has a Happy Ending," by Julie Beck and "Romantic Comedies Teach Women that Stalking is a Compliment," by Chloe Angyal demonstrate how romantic comedies influence individuals to perceive stalking as romantic and a form of a complement. The idea of someone ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The actions an individual takes in order to pursue his or her lover has been seen as a form of a complement and dismiss signs of potential dangerous stalking situations. The romantic movies that are being display today show how "...characters in romantic comedies also engage in stalking that's depicted as proof of true love and passion" (Angyal). The study conducted by Julia Lippman concludes how "watching romanticized, seemingly realistic portrayals of stalking behavior...made women more likely to accept stalking behavior as desirable" (Angyal). However, this can cause women to have no discernment when an individual is showing potential signs of stalking. Moreover, "when women accept stalking myths...they're socialized to perceive abusive behavior as flattering..." ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 5. Farrelly Brothers Theme 1. Subject/Theme– Undoubtedly considered one of the most popular and successful romantic comedies of all time, There's Something about Mary by the Farrelly Brothers, was, for the most part, acclaimed by both critics and audiences. As a romantic comedy, the deepest and most underlying subject/theme of the film has to be love, yet there are so many layers of lesser subjects and themes that collectively contribute to the ultimate theme of love that it's a wonder how it all comes together so effortlessly. The statement that the film makes about the subject of love is that it is both fickle and everlasting at the same time; fickle, because one small injury like the one Ted experienced on the day of his high school prom where his genitals got caught ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... While I do not believe there were any standout scenes, aside from the one where Mary's hair was standing up after she applied what she thought was hair gel to it, that does not mean any of the scenes were sub par. Quite the contrary...the scenes were perfect for what the film wanted to accomplish. At the end, because of all these separate elements of the film which came together effortlessly, viewers are able to relate to Ted in a way that directors and producers wanted all along, allowing for maximum emotional effect to take place, which subsequently allows viewers to relate to the film as a whole, guaranteeing the film's ultimate ... • 7. Relationship Between Media And Relationships Graeme Wright Emma Hudelson 11/15/17 FYS Media and Relationships Media has existed in our lives for centuries. It is a continuously developing force that has taken over our world today. In recent history, films were one of the most popular sources of media and highly influential on the minds of many throughout the world. It gave people certain ideals and stereotypes of how things should be. Today, film is not the only prominent media source, social media has made its mark. Mark Zuckerberg's creation of Facebook was the first major type of social media when it was released in 2004. Since then, Instagram, Twitter, and Snapchat have become the three most prominent sources of social media that follow in facebook's footsteps. According to Statista , Humans consume over 12 hours of media each day. The 12 hours we spend on media is full of possible love damaging influences. The view of real love has been altered in recent years due to "fake love." According to Chuck Klosterman, the media has affected the way that humans interpret love in a negative light but, while this is the case, it's also imperative to show that people can differentiate between what is fake and what is real. Social media is a common culprit of permitting "fake love." Millennials are the up and coming crop of people looking for love. Social media plays a major role in the lives of these teens and young adults, which can negatively impact their chances of finding "real love." Facebook negatively influences ... • 9. Romantic Comedy Analysis Romantic Comedies. We all know of at least one. Chances are we all have one that we could watch over and over again. But, why? What makes romantic comedies so appealing? Why do so many people like them? The Incredible Jessica James is a romantic comedy, that is also an adult's coming of age movie, but not your typical one. A typical romcom plays love as an almost insignificantly light hearted joke. While love is still joked about, it isn't quite as light hearted in The Incredible Jessica James. When people think of a rom com we typically think of one like: Sleepless in Seattle, You've Got Mail, How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days, 10 Things I Hate About You, or Pretty in Pink. The Incredible Jessica James doesn't match up to those movies in a couple of ways. The Incredible Jessica James doesn't completely shy around the politics of today's society, it starts off light but gradually becomes a little more serious, shows the struggles of dating when two people start out not completely over their exes, and is even relatable to some people whose parents have had a rough divorced. Jessica Jones was made to be relatable more than the idealistic romantic comedy where they always end up together. Politics; it is everywhere so why shouldn't we expect it in our movies? Jessica James is passionate about three things in this movie: her opinions (politics), theater, and honesty. Her political views are showcased in one particular scene: her sister's baby shower. Her gift while thoughtful is ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 11. Romanticism In Annie Hall Annie Hall is a 1977 American romantic comedy film directed by Woody Allen from a screenplay co–written by him and Marshall Brickman. Charles H. Joffe who was Woody Allen's manager at that time produced the film and the film's director played the leading male, Woody Allen, as Alvy "Max" Singer, who is a hostile man who tries to figure out the reasoning for his failure in relationships with the film's female lead, who is played by Diane Keaton. Annie Hall is not seen as a traditional romantic film, due to the fact that the stereotype that the viewer has about romantic films are reversed. Unlike other romantic films Annie Hall starts with the story of the break up and the audience is only introduced to the beginning of the relationship 25 minutes into the film. The initiation of the first meeting was done by Annie which is quite unusual because society believes that woman should be courted by the ma. Annie's dress code throughout the film is very masculine with her fitted suits and ties, she is not seen as the conventional girly–girl stereotype. Annie also owns and drives her own car which once again is the position that a make has to show superiority, this puts Alvy in a feminine position. The role change is seen clearly in the scene when they move in together when Alvy says: "I don't want you to live with me!? Whose idea was it?" (Annie Hall and Annie replies: "mine" then Alvy subverts under her and replies with: "yeah, it was yours, actually, but I approved it immediately". • 13. Romantic Comedy Films: Notting Hill And The Screwball Era Romantic comedy films are mostly films that are centered on romantic beliefs such as true love being able to overcome all obstacles. The prime era of romantic comedy was the screwballs; which primarily took place between 1934– 1944. This period was known as the Screwball Era. "The screwball variant of romantic comedy is particularly unrealistic, fast–paced, and unsentimental. One of the main reasons of this is because of censorship. (Romantic Comedy Reading pg.4) Romantic comedies continue to become more realistic as time moves on. The main theme of a romantic comedy film is that two characters, usually a man and woman meet and then part ways because of an argument. Many times the two lead characters meet and fall for each other at the very ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Notting Hill is a 1999 British romantic comedy film that was filmed in London. "Although the plot is unconventional for romantic comedy, the setting Notting Hill which is a residential district in London might not seem conductive to the nurture of romantic love because of the absence of nature, and of privacy in the metropolis". (Notting Hill Essay pg.4) This film is really romantic film with intense heartfelt quality that is shown throughout the film. This is your typical tale of romance that is facing adversity along the way. The film starts with both characters on a level playing field, with both characters leading pretty successful and happy lives. One of the many examples of film techniques used is shown right from the opening scene as the audience is given a great example of non–digetic sound. Anna's role is signified before we even see her on screen as we hear the audience cheering for Anna while a presenter is giving a speech. Julia must keep this very low as she is a famous movie star and doesn't want her affairs being leaked out to the papers. During their first encounter the audience gets a great example of mise–en–scene. This example comes from the costumes that the main characters are wearing while meeting for the first time. We notice Grant wearing an open button down shirt symbolizing a calm and casual look while Anna is trying not to be noticed by wearing all black with sunglasses. Once this encounter is concluded Anna realizes that there is only way to see him again without the affair reaching the papers. This is the main theme in many romantic comedy films as the main characters meet through unusual scenarios. Julia gets him to go to a press banquet at the London West End Hotel, and Grant pretends to be one of the journalists that are covering this event. This is really a great job by the screenwriters, as this scene is well observed and shows us that love between the two is there. It shows that ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 15. Example Of Romantic Comedy Danielle Herrin Section 7 Romantic Comedy Romantic Comedy has been around for many generations enticing the public with ideas of love and romance in a humorous way. According to Dictionary.com Romantic Comedy is defined as, "a movie or play that deals with love in a light, humorous way." For all romantic comedies to make this happen, they follow three simple rules. Boy meets girl, boy loses girl, boy gets girl back. As Brian Finnigan from The Five Golden Rules of Romantic Comedy says, "Different but the same, He wants She Wants, turmoil, and learning curves". Although these technical terms are different, they mean the same thing. Today that may look a little different but this is a staple part of romantic comedy that makes it different ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... There was not much luck. Animal comedy came during the late 70s and 80s. Due to the lack of character growth between the beginning and the end of the movie, these films are great for sequels. Characteristically, animal comedy is about pigs who want to have meaningless sex with women, and due to the lack of character change, at the end of the movie, the characters still want to have meaningless sex with women. The most used Romantic comedy style today is Modern American Romantic Comedy. The woman is portrayed to be equal to the man. A great example that really changed the way romantic comedy was viewed was When Harry Met Sally. Women gave their point of view on relationships and could express equality with men. As James Murphy from moviereal.com states, "Can men and women ever be just friends? Is it possible to move on from the one you love? Is love at first sight ever true love? Is there just one person for everyone? Can I be a big corporate superman AND a decent human being? Etc." These are some questions from romantic comedies that prove the point that women were viewed differently in this film and that caused movies the future movies to change the way the portray women and men together. Finally, Geek Comedy began in 1998. Like animal comedy the characters start out wanting to have meaningless sex with the opposite sex. The difference is there is a character change throughout the storyline and by the end of the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The would–be lovers must overcome obstacles and misunderstandings before being united in harmonious union. The ending frequently involves a parade of couples to the altar and a festive mood or actual celebration (expressed in dance, song, feast, etc.) A Midsummer Night's Dream has four such couples (not counting Pyramus and Thisbe!); As You Like It has four; Twelfth Night has three; etc. Frequently (but not always), it contains elements of the improbable, the fantastic, the supernatural, or the miraculous, e.g. unbelievable coincidences, improbable scenes of recognition/lack of recognition, willful disregard of the social order (nobles marrying ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Shakespeare's early romantic comedy most indebted to John Lyly is Love's Labour's Lost (c. 1588–97), a confection set in the never–never land of Navarre where the King and his companions are visited by the Princess of France and her ladies–in–waiting on a diplomatic mission that soon devolves into a game of courtship. As is often the case in Shakespearean romantic comedy, the young women are sure of who they are and whom they intend to marry; one cannot be certain that they ever really fall in love, since they begin by knowing what they want. The young men, conversely, fall all over themselves in their comically futile attempts to eschew romantic love in favour of more serious pursuits. They perjure themselves, are shamed and put down, and are finally forgiven their follies by the women. Shakespeare brilliantly portrays male discomfiture and female self–assurance as he explores the treacherous but desirable world of sexual attraction, while the verbal gymnastics of the play emphasize the wonder and the delicious foolishness of falling in love. In The Taming of the Shrew (c. 1590–94), Shakespeare employs a device of multiple plotting that is to become a standard feature of his romantic comedies. In one plot, derived from Ludovico Ariosto's I suppositi (Supposes, as it had been translated into English by George ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

It is determined by the actions and roles men and women perform in society and public. However as demonstrated by the arguments in Paul Theroux "Being a Man", Willa Cather "My Antonia", Mindy Kaling "Types of Women in Romantic Comedies Who are Not Real" and Adrienne Rich "Taking Women Students Seriously" stereotypes are what define one's perspective not gender. It's something that's increasingly difficult to find that spark of originality that makes it different than the ones that come before" (Julia Roberts). Romantic comedies are a blessing to this earth. They provide us a foundation on characters, in addition to laughter, sadness, love, passion, hope, and of course, a happy ending. Each romantic comedy has a story of its own waiting to be told. This is my romantic comedy. Act 1 Scene 1: It opens on a girl with brown hair, a face full of freckles, and two large ears, ones that are really too big for her body. You can tell she is different, that something is there, some kind of untapped potential. This girl doesn't want to just pass through life, but wants to live it, preferably on stage. She grew up in a family where she was taught to give back to the world no matter the price. She went to a Montessori school from kindergarten to 8th grade, where she was taught real life problems and circumstances. Since the school was located in Davie, Fl, there was a barn on campus. As she grew up at this school, she had to become more involved with campus life, to reaching the summit of walking the goats on leashes to rubbing oil on the pigs backs to prevent them from dehydration. The school trained her to be a strong, spirited, and hardworking individual, that instilled out–of the box thinking and problem solving. It forced her to be self motivated, set her own goals, and work hard to achieve them. She had extreme focus and was driven by her studies. This form of education laid the foundation of the person she is today. Act 1 Scene 2: Sitting on her living room floor, watching Barbra Streisand captivate the screen in Hello Dolly, there was an instant connection, something that drove this girl to follow what she was doing, theatre and more importantly performing. It was love at first sight, or should I say first show. She had an instant connection with it and knew that she could never love anything else in this world. It kept her awake at night tossing and turning, pondering all the possibilities this relationship could bring. In Romantic Comedies, you fight for love worth fighting for, and boy, she ... Jessica's choice to join her father's persecutors is cruel. He pauses after this statement, perhaps because Jessica's betrayal is the worst type of betrayal against her heritage, and against him. • 43. Gender Roles And Social Cognitive Theory Women model their behavior after the female protagonists they see in films because they see them being successful in love and wish for the same. Women modeling this behavior are an example of social cognitive theory. In the 1980s, this theory was expanded by film theorists who drew from different fields and since then many studies have been conducted to see how films influence society (Nannicelli). Stereotypes in film influences society in the ways it portrays romance, explained by social cognitive theory; movies give a false illusion for women to believe and unrealistic expectations of men and relationships. The social cognitive theory suggests that people who watch romantic comedies glean some understanding from the films by observing the actors behavior and take away from it how they should behave in their own relationships. Due to the unrealistic modeling of behavior that the media gives society, following this example cannot possibly bring a desirable outcome. Hollywood's goal is to entertain their viewers and make them fall in love with the story and characters, but viewers often don't realize this and after watching a romantic movie have a longing for fairy tale love. Hollywood has created an unrealistic and unattainable love. Therefore, when women model their ideals for a relationship off of the romantic–comedy genre, they are highly disappointed, ultimately causing themselves to once again go back to living vicariously through the characters (Green). • 47. The Genre Of Romantic Comedy The genre of romantic comedy has been successful throughout history. Men and women alike watch these films for several reasons, even though they are "predictable." Whether it's for the comedy portrayed, or the love story itself, romantic comedies provide aspects of a story that almost anyone can appreciate. Over time, people began to argue that contemporary romantic comedies have depreciated, but this does not hold true. When comparing Judd Apatow's Knocked Up (2007), which is about a stoner low–life, played by Seth Rogan, who knocks up co–star, Katherine Heigl, who plays Allison, to George Cukor's Adam's Rib (1949), which tells the story of two attorneys bickering over their shared court case, there is a radical difference between the two films in their sheer content to portray a love story while sharing the common romantic comedy plot, but one tells a superior love story. The first notable difference between these films is the kind of humor utilized to articulate the story. According to David Denby, Knocked Up's humor is vulgar and unnecessary, but the humor in this film is not unnecessary. • 53. Romantic Comedies: Roman Holiday And Notting Hill The romantic comedy is a subgenre that has as its central narrative the quest for love that almost always ends with a successful conclusion. It accents love in a light and upbeat manner while also frequently embracing sentimental or melodramatic story developments. Similar to every other genre, it has a set of characteristics or conventions that allow the audience to know what to expect. The key traits that allow one to recognize a movie as a romantic comedy are its realistic characters, traditional dating ritual, and slow story pacing. These conventions of romantic comedies can be further understood by analyzing the narrative functions of two films that depict positive images of true love and its power to transform one's life: Roman Holiday and Notting Hill. Hugh Grant is an awkward but likeable guy who the audience identifies and sympathizes with do to his constant state of heartbreak. He is depicted as the more sentimental person in the relationship. During the beginning of the film he exclaims the cliché line, "I never would suspect this would be the day that changed my life forever." • 55. Romantic Comedy And Annie Hall Annie Hall is a romantic comedy directed by Woody Allan in 1977. The film is not any everyday movie but rather a film that revolves around the life of the main actor, Alvy Singer played by Woody Allen himself and his relationship with Annie Hall, cast by Diane Keaton. It also reflects on his past relationships, which like the relationship with Annie Hall, have failed. Most romantic comedy movies fulfil the viewers' expectations of the perfect love story whilst incorporating comedic elements. Typically there is always a pretty girl who falls deeply in love with a male character, often less popular and less attractive, who makes multiple comedic attempts in winning her heart until eventually they both fall madly in love and live happily ever after, in this case a genre movie is expressed as "those commercial feature films which through repetition and variation, tell familiar stories with familiar characters in ... In most romantic comedies the story line is linear and for the most part predictable. Whereas Annie Hall, although conciliates of a story line, the story is chronological where the start begins with Alvy talking to the audience directly after having yet another failed relationship. It then goes on to detail how it is that he comes to be where he is in the beginning of the film. Lost Of A Romantic Comedy By Sofia Coppola Lost in Translation Lost in Translation, widely considered an independent film, but with overtones of a romantic comedy, written and directed by Sofia Coppola, is an intimate portrayal of loneliness and human connection told through two Americans called Bob and Charlotte who meet in Tokyo, Japan. Charlotte is having an early 20s existential "what do I do with my life" crisis whereas Bob who is much older than charlotte, is having a midlife crisis. However, the unique aspect of the industry is that it is so expansive in all of the different categories and types of movies, but yet each film is individualized. A certain characteristic of a movie may appeal to one person and not another. Such characteristics may not only appeal to an individual but to a certain group of people. Could it be that characteristics of a film appeal to either the male gender or the female gender? Is there a difference in the category of movie that a male chooses as opposed to one that a female chooses? Such questions prove to be very interesting and ... All of the twenty subjects were of college age and appeared to be at the store alone. I specially looked for the type of movie each person would select. By doing this observation, I anticipated to see what people really choose. Since the subjects were unaware that I was watching them, they had no pressure to select a certain type of movie and could chose freely. In other ways of collecting data such as a survey or interview, people may be reluctant to be honest about some details. Through observation, there were no doubts if the subject was being dishonest because they freely chose the movie without even realizing I was watching them. A second route that I chose to collect data was to administer a survey to ten college age people. Of these ten people, five of them were females and five of them were males. The survey was given to these people while they were in their college dorm rooms. There were six questions on the survey, including a gender question, how many movies does the subject watch in an average month, and what are these movies classified as, adventure or romance/romantic comedy. The final two questions dealt with who the subject mostly watches movies with and if they normally get to choose the movie when watching one ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 61. Essay on Romance Movies and Real Life Relationships Today, romance is one of the most popular genres to watch on television. Unlike most, romance is a genre where the plot revolves around the love between two main characters as they experience the highs and lows of love. "Common themes that revolve around romantic movies are kissing, love at first sight, tragic love, destructive love, and sentimental love" (Taylor). These themes appear in many historical films and the pattern still continues in modern films as well. Watching romantic movies has a giant negative influence on the viewer's analysis of what love and relationships should really be like. These films give the wrong impression of reality when it comes to dating, marriage, having children, and even how to manage a relationship in ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The article "Romantic Comedies Affect Beliefs About Relationships", written by Arlyn Riskind, suggests to readers that romantic films are a major source for developing unrealistic expectations about love and relationships. "A survey of 335 undergraduate students in the Midwest found a significant relationship between reporting watching romantic films often and belief in the ideals "love conquers all," "one and only" love (soul mate) and "love at first sight" (Riskind). These findings compliment the expectation that watching romantic movies is a major source leading to the unrealistic expectations among viewers. In addition, romantic comedies also give the wrong impression on relationships. If viewers are getting the wrong idea about love itself, then that leads them into expecting more out of relationships as well. "Almost every romantic movie is generally targeted toward women and has the same basic format: Boy meets girl, mutual feelings develop, conflicts arise and are overcome. Then, the story concludes with a happy ending as the two characters live happily ever after together" (Hefner). • 63. Analysis Of Pretty Woman And The Proposal Filmmakers have been making romantic comedies since the beginning of the art. The genre includes light–hearted scenes with two beautiful main characters showing their idyllic struggle and journey to finding their love. The genre, most like most movies are not realistic, but it proves great for escapism from your stressful everyday life. Romantic comedies, also poorly nicknamed as the 'chick–flick', have almost sturdy societal gender roles representing the two main characters. One cis male and one cis female are typically shown. Pretty Woman and The Proposal both show typical conventions seen in romantic comedies, although The Proposal does a much better job appealing to a modern feminist audience. The movie appeals to the modern woman by not conforming to the stereotypical gender roles, not glorifying materialism, and focusing more the two lead characters and their realistic flaws. The man typically shows dominance and has a higher working status than the woman. This is clearly shown in Garry Marshall's Pretty Woman. Julia Roberts is depicted as a low–class prostitute who falls in love with a wealthy businessman, Richard Gere. Many romcoms made in the 90s through 2000s depicted this basic misogyny, but in the mid–2000s a romcom was released that went against the standards of most movies in that genre. The Proposal directed by Anne Fletcher shows a powerful working woman depicted by Sandra Bullock, who forcibly gave her secretary an ultimatum to marry her when she was ... • 65. Romantic Comedies In The 1920's Romance is a genre which has been going since the 1890's. Silent films were the starting point. These very short films in black and white which involved two characters falling in love. They would only last around 7 minutes. Film makers described love films being about desire and sex. In the 1920's to 50's, romantic films began to portray more painful love. The story line would involve two people who didn't get on. They would then fall in love more towards the end. Over the years the romantic genre has been toyed with, trying to make films to suit a wider ranged audience. This is how more sub–genres of romantic films were gradually produced. They would mix other genres in with the romantic genre so films had more variety and suited more people's interests. • 67. Breakfast At Tiffany 's A Romantic Comedy Essay The movie Breakfast at Tiffany's is a romantic comedy about a single young woman who leads an unusual life. She is engaged in an internal conflict about not conforming to the ideals of society yet she also cannot break free from the chains that hold her back. While the movie is set in 1961, the ideals of society and actions of women in the 1950s really set the stage for the issues that Holly Golightly has to face. It was an era of rapidly shifting sexual norms that were contradictory and contested (Rackley). Gender roles were driven by socially accepted beliefs, behaviors and expectations (Holt). Women were beginning to feel empowered to take control of their own bodies and lives even if this meant that they did not conform to social norms of gender roles. They were trying to break the stereotypes that existed about women and were starting to become more vocal about their sexuality, their roles in society and women's rights. conform to any particular notion of what a woman should be unless it helped her own agenda. Women's political activism eventually led President Kennedy to announce the President's Commission on the Status of Women in late 1961, which was ultimately charged with the tasks of finding ways to overcome sex based discrimination and allowing women to work while fulfilling roles as wives and mothers so they could contribute to the world around them (DuBois et al 631–632). • 69. Punch Drunk Love Is Not A Romantic Comedy Rom Com or Not? Serendipity, How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days, Pretty Woman, Overboard, and Bridesmaids. What do all these movies have in common? For one, they are all obviously romantic comedies. But, what makes them romantic comedies? Probably the most obvious trait they share is that each of these movies creates a lighthearted, whimsical, and amused feeling for their viewers.. There are no times during the movies that the audience feels uneasy or confused. The filmmakers for these movies also creates characters that the viewers like and root for. For these reasons, Punch Drunk Love is not a romantic comedy. When compared to the previous examples it's clear that Punch Drunk Love does not provide any of the traditional romantic comedy feelings. The meet cute in rom coms is an important convention, that Punch Drunk Love does not follow. Meet cutes are important because they can provide a certain feeling for the viewers. For example, in Serendipity the main characters, John and Sara, meet on Christmas Eve at a department store, while reaching for the same pair of gloves. This meet cute gives ... • 73. Pretty Wom An American Romantic Comedy Pretty Woman is an American romantic comedy produced in 1990 by Touchstone Pictures. In the film, Vivian Ward, one of the central characters, works as a prostitute in Los Angeles, California. Edward Lewis, a rich, businessman hires Vivian as an escort for a weeklong period, to serve as his date to various functions and events. And over the course of the week, a relationship between the two matures. Seeing that it focuses on the way in which a well–to–do, handsome man saves and transforms a pitiable prostitute into a beautiful woman with class and style, the movie is considered a modern day Cinderella story. Although the film has all of the elements to be considered a wonderful love story, several issues can be identified and critiqued, particularly those dealing with the portrayal of gender and sexual scripts. Gender is defined as the state of being male or female. Gender consists of the assortment of mental traits that differ between the sexes; thus, gender scripts are the behavior expectations given to males and females. The characters in the movies either feed into or go against gender scripts. Case in point, Edward is a wealthy businessman, and for that reason, his character feeds into the gender script of men being breadwinners and guiders in patriarchal societies. For instance, Edward is displayed as a savior, a hero of some sort, due to the fact that he takes Vivian off the streets, hires her, and transforms her into a well–rounded, respectable woman. • 75. Romantic Comedy Genre Analysis Genre in film began as a sort of "commercial tool" which showed audiences recognizable film content in order to attract customers (Campbell and Swenson). As the film industry grew, this content began to be more specialized, allowing the audience to know exactly what to expect from the film they were seeing. For example, films within the same genre share the same myths, iconography, and conventions. This means they have similarities in aspects such as plot, characters, themes, moods, ways of doing things particular to that genre, and repeated visual and oral elements such as images and sounds. Often genre films are influenced by the social culture of the time in which they are produced, and the content in the film tend to propose a solution to the current problems within society. These resolutions are often portrayed by a main protagonists who is presented with a conflict; the film then concludes with the character reaching a solution to the problem that is not only logical, but moral as well. Within the romantic comedy genre specifically, the storyline usually follows a couple rather than a protagonist. The romantic comedy, or rom com, genre has often been ruled "a purely escapist and conservative genre, accused of unquestioningly presenting unrealistic romantic fantasies for passive audiences" (MacDowell). From its earliest days, romantic comedy films have mostly focused on finding romance and the idea that love is the key to a fulfilled and delighted life. However, this ... • 77. Film Analysis Of The Graduate And Annie Hall Before the 1960s there were plenty of films made. In the 1950s things began to change for, in my opinion, the better. It started with a new form of acting called method acting that encouraged improvisation. This was key because it gave actors more control over their characters which allowed for more realistic representations of characters allowing audiences to connect better to the film. Having more control over a character is something that I found vital because it adds an even deeper element to the film as a whole. Another important thing added in the 1950s was the addition of subject matters and themes that focused on ordinary individuals. This was important again because it added another element to the films that audiences could connect to. In the 1960s there was even more change to the film industry. For example, there was a new focus on youth, with psychological character studies of offbeat anti–heroes. More explicit presentation of sexuality, violence and drug use on screen. Rebellion vs. the American mainstream, with new values and points of view. Self–conscious use of cinematic effects, reflecting European influence and new twists on old film genre. These new changes can be seen in cinematic and thematic elements in films including "The Graduate" and "Annie Hall." To start this film analysis, we'll start with "The Graduate" directed by Mike Nichols. Cinematically there were a lot of things added in this film that shows these new features added to films in the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
