Detroit Art History
Detroit Institute of Art is located at 5200 Woodward Ave, Detroit, MI. The website is
https://www.dia.org/. At this museum, there is a lot of Detroit and American history and also a lot of
paintings from the 18 and 1900s. The website has over 6,000 pieces that are located on the site.
Some of these can't be viewed but they still give you the history on the piece. One of the pieces that
stood out to me was the Egyptian mummuy. That piece is a very ancient piece, but the detailing of
the art interest me the most. I can just imagine the time and effort that was put into it. One of the
current expeditions is based off Detroit's music, mainly the hip hop aspect. It goes into the depths of
not only the music as the performer but behind the scenes. It informs you on how the Detroit music
was over shadowed by other states, but with one of the local Detroit movies, it helped the music side
of things, see the light again. The website does provide useful information. ... Show more content on

Women in Art Essay
Women in Art
Throughout history many artistic works have been deemed "great" and many individuals have been
labeled "masters" of the discipline. The question of who creates art and how is it to be classified as
great or greater than another has commonly been addressed by scholars and historians. The last
quarter of the 20th century has reexamined these questions based on the assertions that no women
artists have ever created or been appreciated to the level of "greatness" that perpetually befalls their
male counterparts. The position that society has institutionalized on women as unable to be anything
but subordinate and unexpressive is a major contributor to this claim. Giving a brief history of
gender discrimination in the art ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
According to the Guerrilla Girls, art museums average 15% women in curated exhibits, and minority
women only .003%. On top of that, only 4% of museum acquisitions are of work by women artists
(Strawter).
The study of why women artists have systematically been erased from history and why currently the
exhibition of women's art is not valued as much as the male artists' continues. There have been many
theories behind the eradication of women artists from history. At the beginning of the Women's
Liberation Movement, an art historian by the name of Linda Nochlin published an article called,
"Why have there been no great women artists?" In here article, she addressed her own question
offering one of the first consciously feminist challenges to the established canons of art history. Her
query proved to be a rallying cry for women artists in the fervent days of the Women's Liberation
movement and offered fragments of a manifesto to women artists, and others, intent on reexamining
and ultimately restructuring the discipline (Morse, 1992). Nochlin argues that contemporary
feminists contend that there is a different "greatness" between men's art and women's art. This view
of art undermines the general discipline. It categorizes its value in order to give it a higher
classification among gender. Many women are trying to delve back into history and recapture any
trace of artistic women in order to document and arrange their

Art criticism and Art History
Case Study: The use of assemblage and the found object in historical and contemporary art practice.
The origins of the practice of assemblage can be traced back to its early twentieth century roots
based on ideas presented by Dadaists. The Dada movement was a literary and artistic movement
during the First World War and further developed as a non–art movement. The main idea of Dada
was to not follow a uniform rule of what an artwork entails in order to be valued. This movement
was significant in the development and history of art as it challenged society with new ideas
therefore provoking change in our perspective of what can be classified as aesthetically pleasing and
all the possibilities of what art ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Duchamp's works are both seen as postmodern as they use postmodern conventions such as
appropriation and parody (as seen in L.H.O.O.Q) and recontextualisation in 'Fountain' (above).
* * * * * * * * * * *
The re–emergence of the found object in pop art was significant in the development of the history of
art as it reinforced previous ideas presented by the Dada artists of aesthetics and of what society will
accept as an artistic work.
The re–emergence of the found object in pop art looked at artworks using contemporary theories and
knowledge that were established in the 1980s to challenge traditional and modernist ideas, which
was exactly the aim of the Dadaists. It is due to the challenging of contemporary perceptions of art
in which the found object would be considered a postmodern practice in its time.
Found art (also known as Ready–mades) is a description of art created by modified and undisguised
objects that are not considered art for the main reason of their non–art function. The art created by
these found objects convey meaning through their context, assemblage/composition and by the
artists intention and approaches taken to montage pieces together.
The use of assemblage and the found object in Pop Art practice became an artistic trend and is
exemplified by Robert Rauschenberg where he combines installations with the assemblage of large
physical objects and commercial photography to form 'Combine' in 1963. Rauschenberg

The History Of Pop Art As An Art Movement
Pop Art is an art movement that started sometime during the 1950's and 60's, it is said that it
emerged first in the United Kingdom and slowly made its way to the United States. It incorporates
popular everyday symbols such as Disney, Coca–Cola, McDonalds or any other company
conglomerate. Before pop art, art was being held to some crazy standards such as that an art piece
had to be unique, one of a kind ,deeply contemplative or philosophical; however, people argued that
this made art highly elitist and inaccessible to the masses. America during the 1950's was in an era
where film, television, advertisements and mass produced imagery on magazines, comic books and
news stands which allowed for these images to be burned into the collective conscious minds of
your average American because of these media. The American culture undoubtedly began to be
shaped by celebrities, consumer products and huge corporate brands. Artists of this time recognized
this trend and wanted to reflect this newly developed reality and began to highlight the mass
production and sensational nature of the mainstream media. Take the famous pop art artists himself,
Andy Warhol, for example, making multiple copies of the same photograph over and over or Claes
Oldenburg's overt larger than life depictions of decadence and food consumption. Whether these
artists did it intentionally or not, they called into question many of the established values of art. Pop
artists also brought attention to how other

When it emerged in the sixties among the crush of several other art movements (Pop Art,
Minimalism, among others) Land Art came to be an anti–gallery artistic offshoot that straddled the
domain between architecture and sculpture. It had no manifestos nor schools nor leaders and it was
not quite a movement; the artists who were involved with it were also involved in other types of
arts. Land art was labelled as modern 'sculpture' but its versatility and introduction of new concepts
and visual materials made it difficult to ascribe it to one field or term. Later on, the term "Earth
Works," coined by Robert Smithson came to use but Earth Works only refers to works that use earth

Smithson's work Broken Circle & Spiral Hill is two different works situated near each other. It is
actually not in America but was commissioned for an exhibition in the Netherlands near Emmen.
Spiral Hill is an earth mound that coils clockwise unto itself, like a sleeping snake. When it was
completed it was just shaped earth but in current day it is covered in green grass. Situated nearby on
the edge of the shore and into the water is the Broken Circle; its site was actually a functioning sand
and gravel quarry which was filled with green water. Smithson played with the negative and positive
space in such a way that the broken circle whose alternating arms are shaped with white and yellow
sand, recalls the Chinese Yin Yang symbol. In the middle of the positive space half circle sits a
boulder and this is yet again another allusion to monumental works of the past, this one
appropriately native to Dutch lands. "Yet the center boulder in fact significantly expands the
associative levels of this work because it offers a direct tie to prehistory. . . . In the Bronze Age they

Appropriation In Art History
'Appropriation in art and art history refers to the practice of artists using pre–existing objects or
images in their art with little transformation of the original' (Tate, no date). Artists have been
appropriating for many centuries and tend to use the most iconic of masterpieces from the past and
make them more contemporary for today's style. The 'Mona Lisa' by Leonardo Da Vinci is one of
the greatest examples of this act. It is one of the most famous and well known paintings ever
created; however the piece has been manipulated by other artists, so much that the meaning behind
the original is indefinite. If a piece of which is so recognisable in our society be stolen from other
artists, this leaves us with the question– Is art original? ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
But knowing makes me have a different opinion. This still puzzles my thoughts of originality in art
and whether it matters in our society.
This is a representation of the Marilyn Monroe Piece by Yu Youhan produced in the Chinese century
of political pop.
Youhan replicated the same method to Warhol's all time famous artwork but altered the subject of
the design. Instead of Monroe he replaced the figure as the chairman Mao. He used Mao as part of a
memorial as he played a big part in his political life. By doing this, it changes the meaning of the
painting and Mao becomes the centre of attention and the main topic of the piece.
I am now going to discuss Cindy Sherman and her film scenes. She was a big believer in Feminism
and is well known for recreating film stills replacing the original actors with her.
Although Sherman's work is entitled as one of those artists who appropriate, I would consider her
work to be quite original. Yes, you could say that because she has copied film scenes that her work
isn't original but personally I believe that her work is trying to make a change and represent

Art History And Its Impact On Art
Art history allows for a greater understanding of the progression of human thought and how
conditions from one time period to another are reflected in art. Humanity represents itself through
art and by doing so we are able to take a deeper look into the mentality and emotions that were held
within a certain time period. Human studies such as cultural studies or history only highlight small
specific areas of humanity while art history combines the two and gives a comprehensive look into
all factors that influenced not only the art of a certain time but the events that influenced certain
styles. Through the study of art history we are able to see the different events that caused shifts in
prospective and influenced changes in art styles. For example the iconoclasm during the protestant
reformation drastically altered the type of art that was being produced and greatly limited forward
progression of certain styles. All images of God, Jesus, and any other paintings or sculptures that
depicted images of "false idols" were destroyed or removed from view. In ancient Egypt, the carved
visages of some pharaohs were obliterated by their successors. The destruction of art was used as a
way to influence ideas through out a community of people. By limiting the growth of art, the
recorded history of Christianity was greatly altered. Humanity is constantly changing and evolving
in relation to its surroundings as viewed through the study of art. Art is all encompassing of a

particular institutions and their ways of establishing orders of truth, or what is accepted as 'reality' in

reinforced by existing systems of law, education and the media". Foucault's work is to show that

(Millhouse, 2011) In the 1980's Pollock's Feminism "critiqued the essential myths of individualism,

While the 70's feminism movement aim was to stand next to the existing masculine dominated
culture. "Feminism's encounter with the canon has been complexed and many–leveled: political

movement was followed by the immediate task which was "the need to rectify the gaps in historical
knowledge created by the consistent omission of women of all cultures from the history of art"
(Pollock, 1999). The only art that was put on display was significantly male dominated work, if you
wanted to see work created by women, you would have to view them "in a basement or storeroom of
a national gallery" (Pollock, 1999). Female artists are only known in their own category of female
artists while male artists don't require a separate category . Art that is created by females have been

The History of Art
The uniqueness of Japanese art, especially in terms of Chinese art, depends on the historical era. As
Lee (1962) points out, "There are periods in Japanese art where the artist is either copying, or is
heavily influenced by, Chinese art. At such times it can be said that Japanese art is a strong
reflection of Chinese art," (p. 3). At other times, though, small differences between the arts of China
and Japan are "magnified to such an extent that they become fully developed and original styles,"
(Lee, 1962, p. 3). With regards to modern art, Japan is far more the influencer of Chinese art than
vice–versa, as Fogel (2012) points out.
Therefore, it is impossible to make a blanket statement about the relative uniqueness of Japanese art.
Certainly there are periods in which Japanese art is so heavily influenced by Chinese art that it could
even be lumped together in a similar category. Museum curators dealing with large amounts of
inventory from classical Chinese and Japanese art frequently do classify East Asian art together as if
the differences between Chinese and Japanese art are too negligible to be of any serious importance.
For example, the Saint Louis Art Museum (2008) compiles all its art of China and Japan, also
including the arts of Korea. This is because the curated collection is a reflection of a specific
historical epoch: that of the spread of Buddhism throughout East Asia. "Buddhist monks traveling
between China, Korea, and Japan carried religious and artistic

Term Paper Draft
Art History is the study of objects of art in their historical development and stylistic contexts. The
history of art, we feel, can sometimes be confused with art criticism. However, Art History is
concerned with finding the value of the artistic piece in respect with others in the same category of
art or movement, and art criticism is more of an evaluation of art. The art examined best represents
the culture during the time period, visions the artist imagined, and history behind an event. It also
represents society in a specific area, beliefs the people may have, writing that tells a story, the
natural world and environment, conflict between people and areas, and the human body. With these
representations, artwork overall represents the life in which we live (d). Each piece has its own
genre, design, format and style to it. This makes each piece extremely different, yet pleasing to the
eye. They also vary between paintings, sculptures and architecture. These different types also make
a variety of artwork to be seen by all people. The art pieces that I chose, Jar, Bottle and Glass by
Juan Gris, The Persistence of Memory by Salvador Dalí, and Starry Night by Vincent Van Gogh,
seemed interesting to me and I believe to best represent the context in which they were created,
along with the major artistic movements of the time. I went on to research them more thoroughly to
better understand the history behind them,

Chapter 15 primarily includes insightful information about the earliest art all the way through to the
Bronze Age. Art history is a very unique type of history because it allows for people to visualize
earlier life and how our ancestors survived, perceived themselves and their surroundings during
different time periods. This art comes from different eras and locations such as the Paleolithic
Period, Neolithic Period, early civilization, Mesopotamia, and Egypt. Beginning somewhere around
2 million years prior to today, early hominids, in east–central Africa, crafted the first ever tools that
could be used to cut and shape stone. These primitive tools were later refined and developed into

These deserts also kept outside architecture away and allowed for the Egyptians to develop their
own, very unique, methods of building. The greatest works of Egyptian civilization are the Great
Pyramids, which are comparable to the size of mountains and severed as tombs for fallen Pharaohs.
It was a common belief in Egypt that in order for someone to reach the afterlife, their body on Earth
had to be preserved and taken care of with respect. All bodies were embalmed as quickly as possible
and then were buried in their tomb to rest for all eternity. Inside these pyramids and tombs,
architects spent a great deal of time and effort building false hallways and walls in an effort to keep
people from reaching the actual resting place of the deceased. We were finally able to get a better
understanding as to why architects tried to keep people from reaching the tombs and why grave
robbers were so active when we discovered the Tomb of Tutankhamen. Tutankhamen, also known as
King Tut, died at the age of 18 and is so well documented because his tomb was discovered in
modern times with most of his valuables left inside. Another tomb that has taught us a great amount
about ancient Egypt is the Tomb of Nebamun. In this tomb there is a wall painting in which the artist

Semiotics in Art History
The Oxford English Dictionary defines semiotics as ''[the] science of communication studied
through interpretation of signs and symbols as they operate in various fields, especially language."
Semiology is characterized as ''the science of signs which studies the life of signs within society.''
Signs include, among others, sounds, images, words, odors, objects; they are concepts that stand for
something else in a system of signification. They allow us to communicate a concept or an idea
while it is physically absent. In art history, the simplest description of semiology consists of the
translation of an image into words. Two prominent founders of the contemporary sign theories are
Peirce and Saussure. Although they focus on the same ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This idea is intrinsically related to the concepts of the sender and the viewer, which will be
discussed in the next sections of this paper. The second issue discussed by the art historians is the
sender of a work. In this section, Bal and Bryson define and differentiate the composition of the
''artist'' of a work. First, there is the concept of the sender as an individual, or J. Bloggs, as they call
him. J. Bloggs stands for the name of the individual, ''a designation, not a description;[...] it does not
assign any particular characteristics to its bearer''(p.181). The second aspect of the sender is the
author, which is ''in the works, in a body of artifacts and in the complex operations performed on
them''(p.181). It is the notions of enframement that distinguishes J.Bloggs from the author, which is
what Bal and Bryson identify as ''an elaborate work of framing, something we can elaborately
produce rather than something we simply find'' (p. 181). The art historian, Culler, explains that
authorship is given, not produced, as he states that ''what counts as authorship is determined by
interpretative strategies''(p.181). Thus, in simpler terms, the author or artist could be produced in the
sense that his attributed works and other interpretable material, and ultimately produce a conception.
Attributions are said to be evidenced through ''material traces of the author in the work,

Essay on Art History
In the early 1700s, the monarchies failures at finance, national debt, involvement in multiple wars
with little care given to veterans and rising unemployment inflamed the people. When coupled with
the monarchies lifestyles of lavish spending on countless mistresses, flouting morals, excessive
parties at court, and political favors, the popularity of royalty was quickly disintegrating. The
irresponsibility of the aristocracy was no longer ignored, and a movement was beginning. This set
the stage for political change.
Writers such as Thomas Hobbes (1588–1679) and John Locke (1632–1704) of England experienced
these changes and began exploring the ideals of republicanism and liberalism through their writing.
Thus, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It did not take long for the ideas to spread through Germany, the Netherlands, France, Italy, Spain,
Portugal, and the American Colonies. The American Revolution began in 1775, and Thomas Paine
wrote Common Sense in January of 1776. Voltaire who had written thousands of letters, books, and
pamphlets finished his "Dictionnaire Philosophique in 1764, and the French Revolution began in
1789.
As these social, political, and moral views changed, so too did the style the arts used to
communicate life. It was during this Age of Enlightenment that the Neoclassical era in art history
began by reflecting these changing views using a style much less ornate and gilded than the Baroque
and Rococo styles that had previously dominated artistic endeavors. Strict adherence to simple
classical style with an aim to technical perfection was favored and borrowed heavily from Greek
and Roman pieces discovered earlier in the 1700s. Art was approached with the same logic and
reason of the age and with much less emotion and drama than Baroque or Rococo.
The subject matter was often dark and serious, morally and ethically upright, or heroic. Where the
aristocracy had valued drama, emotion, and grandeur, the people now valued self–denial and self–
sacrifice over self–indulgence. The colors were often dark or solemn and made use of chiaroscuro,

Prosque Art : The History And Art Of Romanesque Art
Romanesque art got its name from art historians to describe medieval art that appeared "Roman–
like". Today, it is a term that classifies the history and culture of Western Europe from 11th to 12th
century. This type of art is known for its religious imagery, style of architecture, and sculptures that
were heavily influenced by Christianity. One of the most famous pieces of Romanesque art that
emerged from this era was the Bayeux Tapestry. Although Romanesque art is mainly religious, the
tapestry is not about a Christian figure, but a pictorial narrative that depicts in full detail the events
that lead to the Norman conquest of England. "It presents a rich representation of a particular
historic moment as well as providing an important visual source for eleventh–century textiles that
have not survived into the twenty–first century" (khan). The Bayeux Tapestry is an artistic
masterpiece that provides us with both historical and artistic information about Medieval England.
Measuring about 20 inches high and 230 feet long, the Bayeux Tapestry is an embroidered fabric
that has imagery and inscriptions that were sewn on linen. To call this artwork a "tapestry" is a
misrepresentation, since tapestry designs are woven as part of the fabric. "The artists skillfully
organized the composition of the tapestry to lead the viewer's eye from one scene to the next"
(khan). The tapestry is made up of eight bands of natural linen that were sewn together. The scenes

History of Dance in Art
Dance, Music, and Performance
"The Joy of Life"
Introduction
In the nineteenth century some of the greatest innovations come from artists who strove to discover
if art could work on the same level as music. I have decided to research the relationship between art,
dance, and music. The interpretation of dance and music in art continually developed during the
twentieth century. Firstly dance as a subject matter, drawn narratively and may have a symbolic
meaning. This then moved on to dance interpreted emotionally. Thirdly music and dance can be
interpreted abstractly. Endell's hypothesis (Fig.1) shows this idea of art working abstractly. Arshile
Gorky describes abstraction as "allowing man to see with his mind what he cannot ... Show more

It was compiled by an assistant covering sheets of paper with flat, brilliantly hued gouache. He then
directed his assistants to place the gouache precisely on the images to make the composition.
A great advantage of this technique was that it let Matisse experiment with the composition. It
solved Matisse's problems of form and space, outline and colour, structure and orchestration that
Matisse had always sought to harmonize. It also allowed him to pay full attention to the importance
of line rhythms and form which in the past he had to sacrifice to colours and tonal relations. Matisse
said, it "allowed me to seek a new means of expression" which Matisse believed had "beneficent

Matisse's technique was neither cubist (such from the Synthetic collage phase during the period of

Kandinsky produced in his series of improvisations. Matisse described his works as "improvisations
in colour and rhythm" like those of Louis Armstrong. Jazz music was a big influence in his
découpages. Matisse believed that "when I put colours together they have to join in a living chord or
harmony of colour, like a musical chord or harmony". "Jazz" album (published in 1947) was one of
the first extraordinary results of découpages technique. It

The history of Oregon portrays a picture that in general suggest the state has never been particularly
fond of minorities. During the formation of the state, African Americans were not allowed within its
borders. Out of all the states, Oregon was the only one who attempted to enforce this policy. Today,
racist attitudes and racial discrimination towards African Americans is still a topic of concern. For
example, black and Latinos are charged a higher rent and deposit by landlords in some areas of
Portland. Clearly, this issue stems from the discriminatory beliefs and attitudes of the landlords who
enforce these unjust disparities in cost.

American Association of Art Therapy. Now that a definition and background of art therapy has been
given, deeper questions can be asked, such as, "Is art therapy effective?" Art therapy is hard topic to
find direct research on, however art therapy deals primarily with the impact that images have on us.
This is a main idea that is agreed upon by almost all art therapists, and is a topic that is widely
researched. The first study will deal directly with images and a person health, and the second two
are a little more vague. They both deal with our visual expressions (such as a smile) and how that

ART
__–history, __–theory, __–world
(Accounting for modern art with Dickie, Danto, and Weitz)
Up until the twentieth century art theorists had consistently sought for a definition of art–a definition
that would determine a set of necessary and sufficient conditions for something to be called art. But
artists in the 20th century did not want to be defined, and they deliberately tried to create artworks
that would not fit under some theorist's umbrella. We saw the Beatniks with their free verse; we saw
the pop art of Andy Warhol; we saw the rise of abstractionist and surrealist painters; we saw
"happenings", and we saw "ready–made" art, all of which combined to make the finding of a
definition of art almost ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
If you try to think of a necessary condition for a game to be a game, there will always be some game
that refutes the condition, or some game that we could invent that would not fit that condition, but
could fit many others. The question of whether something is or is not art does not require us to see if
all its properties fit into some specific set of necessary and sufficient conditions; rather, it requires us
to ask whether or not we will make a decision to "enlarge the set of conditions for applying the
concept (Weitz, 188)." For both games and art there are no essential properties, there are only
"family resemblances", or relational similarities that allow us to recognize whether a thing is close
enough to be considered "art" or "a game". Weitz offers a great summation of his argument
concerning the "openness" of the concept of art:
"What I am arguing, then, is that the very expansive, adventurous character of art, its ever–present
changes and novel creations, makes it logically impossible to ensure any set of defining properties.
We can, of course, choose to close the concept. But to do this with "art" or "tragedy" or
"portraiture," etc., is ludicrous since it forecloses on the very conditions of creativity in the arts
(189)."
So, Weitz's

The Value Of Art And Art
The ownership of art in 2017 is typically brought up in discussions regarding works of art with
seven to eight–digit price tags, owned by individuals with a net worth that can be described using
nine to ten digits. However, popular opinion would probably agree that the person who has the
single greatest appreciation for art is the art historian. Popular opinion would also be quick to agree
that the art historian does not value a work of art in accordance with the market's appraisal of a
given piece. The art historian's origin is grounded in academia – rather than profit margins or
financial ownership.
The art historian's obligation lays in their responsibility to spread the wealth of knowledge
associated with the history of art while also ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
However, if art historians were to take a passive stance to art that is at risk of being destroyed
because it is located in an area of geopolitical unrest, then they risk losing the very subjects that
legitimizes their occupational responsibilities. For example, we have seen that works located in the
turbulent sectors of the Middle East have been wiped out on massive scales. André Emrich
highlighted the greatest contemporary tragedy regarding the aforementioned statement in his essay,
Improving the Odds: Preservation through Distribution:
The worst act of barbarity to inaugurate the new millennium was the horrifying destruction in 2001
by the Taliban and Al–Qaeda in Afghanistan of the giant statues of Buddha at Bamiyan, and the
smashing of every piece of figurative art that could be found in the National Museum. The
unprecedented, deliberate destruction has left nothing but photographs of the art of entire cultural
epochs. (source)
Perhaps obvious, but the necessary ethical response to tragedies such as this is to ensure the best
possible chance for the collective preservation of art. Art historians have no obligatory association
with a specific nation or institution, their obligation is to maintain and develop the narrative of art.
This cannot be done if the art they would like to examine evaporates from history due to rogue–
extremist human action. Typically, disputes over repatriation are reserved to those who represent the
respective nations

Feminism and Art History
The history of mankind has often been captured in snapshots between the rise and fall of great
leaders and civilizations, by artists all with a common dream of portraying what they saw during
their times. Ideologies reflective of their societies were depicted through sculptures, frescoes,
pottery, paintings, and many other methods. Many of these principals were created, celebrated, and
popularized by constituents of societies where andocentric values were applied not only to social
and political mores, but also to the various art forms as the male body was cherished and praised and
the female body was hidden away from public view. The book Feminism and Art History:

Kampen concludes by discussing how the image of women portrayed the idealistic views of women
as caretakers who stayed at home , and works of art supported this by depicting women as "
mythological or entertaining, or as an adjunct to the patron's own status; otherwise she might not
appear." (pg. 74) The author believes that the artists were in denial of the experiences of working
women and that's why the views of working women were limited. The visual portrayals of gender
and status in Roman society stand as a bridge linking the work of art and the work of society
together as one. The final chapter that I read was one I found extremely conflictant and interesting
because not only did we touch on some of these topics in class, but when I visited the Metropolitan
Museum I actually had some of the same issues with the works I saw there. Eve and Mary:
Conflicting Images of Medieval Woman by Henry Kraus, was by far one of the more fascinating
chapters and discussed the distorted views of women as vessels that the Devil could use to entrap a
man and cause him to fall from God's grace, during medieval times and reinforced by the Catholic
Church. Monasteries were places that men could go and abstain from worldly pleasures, proving
their dedication to God and refraining from anything that could cause them to sin either physically,
emotionally, and especially spiritually. During the fourteenth century,

The Stonebreakers
In the twentieth century, the views of orthodox Marxism spiked a discussion that addressed the
socioeconomic contrast between art history and social art history, revolutionizing the process of how
art history was researched and interpreted. Until this time, Marxists believed that traditional art
historians merely touched surface of the artwork's background by identifying the artist, the medium,
the time period it was created in, and how the piece was a product of its society. From there, they
come to a conclusion as to why the details in the paintings hinted toward these cultural normalcies
and traditions of whatever specific society they were researching into. However, Marxist art
historians dug much deeper than that, researching particular cultural customs and ... Show more

Unlike other paintings of this time, this image was not meant to boost the morale of hard work as
much as it was used to depict the affliction of the unappreciated middle–class people of 1850's
France. This concept was apparent in its muted tones, lackluster setting with little atmospheric
perspective, and lack of identity in both of the figures, allowing them to be John Does in a world of
other middle class workers who dreamt of their own "ideal democratic public" (Marxism and the
Social History of Art). This idea was laid out in T.J. Clark's book, On the Social History of Art,
specifically dedicated to Courbet, which was entitled Image of the People:
Owing to the extensive use of machinery and to the division of labour, the work of the proletarians

Stolen Art History
The biggest art robbery in history was the theft where a total of 15 art works were stolen. Totaled up
the works were valued at $500million. The government had several "attempts" at trying to find the
art works and its values. A reward was set at $5 million dollars despite the art valuing way more
than that lump sum of cash. In 1997 inspector Clouseau received paint chips in which the supposed
art snatchers claimed to be from the stolen art work. In 2003 the chips were examined and had a
fairly rare paint coating called "red lake" which was used in one of the stolen art works called
"Vermeer" which when translated to English "the concert". So the government feels like they had

Pop Art History
"Pop Art looks out into the world. It doesn't look like a painting of something, it looks like the thing

became a whole different breed of art. Pop Art came like a thunderstorm taking over the globe in the
late 50's and the early 60's and has continued to be a staple in the world of art. Pop Art has played a
massive part in art history and in history in general. The aim for this paper is to inform audiences
about Pop Art by exploring how Pop Art was formed, why it was even started, and to tell you about
some artists who truly shaped Pop Art. Roy Lichtenstein once said, "Art doesn't transform. It just
plain forms" (Wolf). In 1952 a hand full of artists who called themselves the "independent group"
met up in London, England. Some members of the group included Edourdo Paolozzi, Richard
Hamilton, Alison and Peter Smithson, Lawrence Alloway, and Reyner Banham. They began to meet
up on a regular basis to discuss topics including mass culture's grip on the fine arts, the found object,
and science and technology. Since the British were still trying to recover from the trying times of
WWII they ended up resorting to fantasies of America and the "lavish" American culture. Soon the
"independent group" was looking into the idea of a commercial character. Many of them questioned
this thought and began to wonder if the idea would ever take off. However most began to grow

In Grandview Boulevard, completed in 1974 CE, the artist utilizes painterly brushstrokes. The
shadows of the trees that are painted dark purple appear to have more painterly aspects than the rest
of the composition. From far away, the painting seems smooth and sleek, but up close, the individual
thick brushstrokes can be seen. The implied texture of the leaves in the painting is sturdy and
prickly, and the texture of the yellowed grass appears to be dry and coarse, however, the actual
texture of the painting itself is smooth. The artist also uses both curvilinear and geometric lines. In

The tree on the bottom right of the painting demonstrates modeling, which is the contrast between
light and shadow in a work. The shading on the left side of the tree is darker than the right side of
the tree. The tree's local color (true color) is a light tan (bark of the tree) in comparison to its
perceptual color (implied), which is a darker gray/brown. The painting demonstrates diminution of
scale, for the long palm trees at the top of the composition appear smaller than the long palm trees
placed lower on the page. Not only does the artist use diminution of scale, but they also use vertical
location. The bushier palm trees n the back left side of the composition all appear to be the same
size, but because some are placed higher on the page, they appear to be further away than the ones
placed lower on the page. The artist use of overlapping helps achieve perception of depth. By
overlapping the trees it makes it look like the painting has much more depth. Because of all of this,
the painting portrays deep depth, not only because of the multiple overlapping and diminution of
scale, but also because of the multiple horizon lines, causing the painting to look like the road goes
on over the hills. This painting is a narrative, and its focal point is down the road. As the roads begin
large and gets smaller, the eyes follow the road until it ends. The artist uses both thick and thin lines

Obviously, the famous museum inquired documentation of where the work of art was purchased, so
Mr. Symes supplied a document explaining the statue had been privately owned since 1939. The bill
of sale, dated March 18, 1986, stated the statue belonged to Renzo Canavesi's family since 1939, but
made no mention of where the famous work of art was beforehand. Unfortunately for the Getty
museum, in 2007 the Italians claimed about 40 artifacts from the museum that they suspected to be
looted, one being Aphrodite. The people of Morgantina believe she was stolen and yearn for her
return. "This is her rightful place," said Nicola Leanza, the cultural minister for Sicily. In response to
the Italian government, the Getty museum essentially argued that there was no concrete proof that
the statue was from Morgantina. However, the museum willfully returned 26 other objects that
Italians claimed to be looted, but fundamentally refused to release the Ancient Greek Sculpture. The
Italian government is asking for the return of the statue back to its country of origin, considering it is

For the past few weeks I have been sorting through the collection of postcards. I selected the ones

India was being portrayed to the West. I am currently taking notes on what literally shown in each

The Expanding Discourse Summary
The introduction to The Expanding Discourse and Reclaiming Female Agency: Feminist Art History
After Postmodernism as well as the interview A Dialogue with Linda Nochlin, the Maverick She all

somewhat startling. These essays explore some of the intricacies and changes within the history of
this relatively new methodology of art history and, though these essays do not go into great detail,
they do offer a helpful survey that is brief, yet informative, for this particular discipline of art
history.

What is clear is that feminist art history is not meant to sway art history solely towards the feminist
perspective, but to add it to the art historical canon to even out any inequalities. By continuously
questioning any theories of both traditional art history, but also those of postmodernism, the
evolution of feminist art history continues to develop, hopefully to its benefit. Clearly, feminist art
history has come a long way in a comparatively short time; however, this does not mean that there is
not room for improvement. Indeed, after reading these essays, there is a distinctly obvious need to
take action to advance feminist art history so that, in turn, other methodologies of art history can
develop to become more effective, influential, and inclusive. It is astonishing to learn how
complicated that feminist art history truly is, for there are so many factors that must be taken into

Breaking Down the Barriers to Feminist Art Work
"Every time a girl reads a womanless history she learns she is worth less."

painfully obvious. There are few if any women artists included in the study of art history. If you dig
deep into the books you can find mention of many unknown, unrecognized and often times very
talented women artists from the past. Women in history are simply not recognized, and this is due to
a large extent to their exclusion from the art world. My paper chooses to focus on a few female
artists of the sixties and seventies who sought to make up for past history and ensure women were

piece was to show how many women from history are unrecognized and forgotten. These women
have made lasting and powerful contributions to our society and yet they are essentially left out of
history and overshadowed by their male counterparts. This was especially true in art history, and
Chicago attempted to show how important it was that females have a place in history. Therefore the
exclusion of women from history, had a profound impact on Chicago and greatly impacted her art

The Dinner Partyî utilizes female sexual imagery to further establish a female presence in the work.
The plates for ìThe Dinner Partyî clearly depict vaginal imagery. Chicago termed this imagery

stereotypes people had about females and establish the importance of women both in the past and
present. This work sought to repair some of the damage suffered from the exclusion

Modern Art : A History And History Of Indian Art
Indian art has been around for thousands of years, the art can be traced back to pre–historic
settlements in 3000 B.C.E. There have been many different influences on the art from this area.
Some of the art has cultural influences, as well as religious influences. There has been a lot of
ancient art that has been preserved through time due to plenty of it was made with steel and stone,
and as India encompasses such a large area, some of the art has come from area's such as Pakistan,
and Bangladesh. There are many forms of Indian art including Pottery, sculptures, jewelry, cave
paintings, and textiles. I will look at traditional Indian art, dating back to the prehistoric times all the
way up to the period after the British colonial rulers came into India, and how it has changed over
the years.
ROCK ART
The rock art of India is concentrated in the Bhimbekta region of India, it is right in the middle of
India and this art was discovered in 1957 by Dr. Vishnu Shridhar Wakankar (Dubey–Pathak 5). Most
of the art discovered in the caves were markings of what was going on at the time, there were
images of hunting scenes, religious folk symbols, animals, and humans (Dubey–Pathak 8). Rock

Man Ray like many other artists did not care to have his personal life shown in his art. He wanted to

Ray was mostly influenced by Stieglitz's photographs. Man Ray used a similar style to Stieglitz. He

way to create his photos; by accident in his work room he discovered how to manipulate objects in
his photos on pieces of photosensitive paper. In the year 1914, at a seminal exhibition, Man Ray

Renaissance art affected both the artists and their patrons with the expansion of current techniques
and artistic sensibilities. It made a great contribution to the development of literature, architecture,
science, philosophy and many other aspects of the society of those times. In the 15th century,
Europe underwent a lot of improvements. It evolved from medieval feudal sates that were governed
by wealthy landowners into town centers that were concentrated, functioning as powerful
economical nuclei. The cities took political and financial power and the middle classes, that mainly
consisted of artisans, merchants and bankers, had a significant responsibility in commerce with their
independence and wealth. This economic prosperity was in particular marked in Italy where several
palaces and villas were constructed to create a big demand for spendthrift domestic art and furniture.
These were the requirements for the newly wealthy and the established aristocratic patrons. For
example, the Farnese table of the metropolitan had a marble inlay and was commissioned for a rich
papal family. This represents the kind of monumental furniture mostly found in the newly
constructed spacious interiors of the superb palaces. Giotto was the first to start Italian Renaissance

a valuable source of information for the individuals who are studying Greek art because it presents a
comprehensive, logical and well documented material. The page like this should have images of
artworks, the short description of the artwork: its title, the date, the name of the artist, the country of
origin, the medium and dimensions, the detailed description including information about the subject
matter, and accompanying art history facts. Such art history facts may be in a form of short notes or
extensive essays. The Met's pages have all the features ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The index provides methods for a directed research for art movements and styles, artists, geography,
materials and techniques, objects, and themes. For example, there are links to the Hellenistic period
in Greek Art, Kleophrades Painter, Sculpture in the Round from the Balkan Peninsula, Men's
Clothing, and Mythological Figure from Europe. Although the webpage is filled with a lot of
information, it is never "too much" for those who are hungry for knowledge. There is a list for
further reading and articles. For example, we can find more information about Greek art in the book
Greek Sculpture: The Late Classical Period and Sculpture in Colonies and Overseas by John
Boardman or in the article "Painted Greek Vases" in the Metropolitan Museum of Art Bulletin
(summer, 1962) by Dietrich Von

Detroit Art Museum History and Collection in 40 Characters

  • 1. Detroit Art History Detroit Institute of Art is located at 5200 Woodward Ave, Detroit, MI. The website is https://www.dia.org/. At this museum, there is a lot of Detroit and American history and also a lot of paintings from the 18 and 1900s. The website has over 6,000 pieces that are located on the site. Some of these can't be viewed but they still give you the history on the piece. One of the pieces that stood out to me was the Egyptian mummuy. That piece is a very ancient piece, but the detailing of the art interest me the most. I can just imagine the time and effort that was put into it. One of the current expeditions is based off Detroit's music, mainly the hip hop aspect. It goes into the depths of not only the music as the performer but behind the scenes. It informs you on how the Detroit music was over shadowed by other states, but with one of the local Detroit movies, it helped the music side of things, see the light again. The website does provide useful information. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Rather you're old or young, you can learn from the museum and get a better understanding of Detroit. • 2. Women in Art Essay Women in Art Throughout history many artistic works have been deemed "great" and many individuals have been labeled "masters" of the discipline. The question of who creates art and how is it to be classified as great or greater than another has commonly been addressed by scholars and historians. The last quarter of the 20th century has reexamined these questions based on the assertions that no women artists have ever created or been appreciated to the level of "greatness" that perpetually befalls their male counterparts. The position that society has institutionalized on women as unable to be anything but subordinate and unexpressive is a major contributor to this claim. Giving a brief history of gender discrimination in the art ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... According to the Guerrilla Girls, art museums average 15% women in curated exhibits, and minority women only .003%. On top of that, only 4% of museum acquisitions are of work by women artists (Strawter). The study of why women artists have systematically been erased from history and why currently the exhibition of women's art is not valued as much as the male artists' continues. There have been many theories behind the eradication of women artists from history. At the beginning of the Women's Liberation Movement, an art historian by the name of Linda Nochlin published an article called, "Why have there been no great women artists?" In here article, she addressed her own question offering one of the first consciously feminist challenges to the established canons of art history. Her query proved to be a rallying cry for women artists in the fervent days of the Women's Liberation movement and offered fragments of a manifesto to women artists, and others, intent on reexamining and ultimately restructuring the discipline (Morse, 1992). Nochlin argues that contemporary feminists contend that there is a different "greatness" between men's art and women's art. This view of art undermines the general discipline. It categorizes its value in order to give it a higher classification among gender. Many women are trying to delve back into history and recapture any trace of artistic women in order to document and arrange their ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Essay on Art Criticism and Art History Art criticism and Art History Case Study: The use of assemblage and the found object in historical and contemporary art practice. The origins of the practice of assemblage can be traced back to its early twentieth century roots based on ideas presented by Dadaists. The Dada movement was a literary and artistic movement during the First World War and further developed as a non–art movement. The main idea of Dada was to not follow a uniform rule of what an artwork entails in order to be valued. This movement was significant in the development and history of art as it challenged society with new ideas therefore provoking change in our perspective of what can be classified as aesthetically pleasing and all the possibilities of what art ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Duchamp's works are both seen as postmodern as they use postmodern conventions such as appropriation and parody (as seen in L.H.O.O.Q) and recontextualisation in 'Fountain' (above). * * * * * * * * * * * The re–emergence of the found object in pop art was significant in the development of the history of art as it reinforced previous ideas presented by the Dada artists of aesthetics and of what society will accept as an artistic work. The re–emergence of the found object in pop art looked at artworks using contemporary theories and knowledge that were established in the 1980s to challenge traditional and modernist ideas, which was exactly the aim of the Dadaists. It is due to the challenging of contemporary perceptions of art in which the found object would be considered a postmodern practice in its time. Found art (also known as Ready–mades) is a description of art created by modified and undisguised objects that are not considered art for the main reason of their non–art function. The art created by these found objects convey meaning through their context, assemblage/composition and by the artists intention and approaches taken to montage pieces together. The use of assemblage and the found object in Pop Art practice became an artistic trend and is exemplified by Robert Rauschenberg where he combines installations with the assemblage of large physical objects and commercial photography to form 'Combine' in 1963. • 4. The History Of Pop Art As An Art Movement Pop Art is an art movement that started sometime during the 1950's and 60's, it is said that it emerged first in the United Kingdom and slowly made its way to the United States. It incorporates popular everyday symbols such as Disney, Coca–Cola, McDonalds or any other company conglomerate. Before pop art, art was being held to some crazy standards such as that an art piece had to be unique, one of a kind ,deeply contemplative or philosophical; however, people argued that this made art highly elitist and inaccessible to the masses. America during the 1950's was in an era where film, television, advertisements and mass produced imagery on magazines, comic books and news stands which allowed for these images to be burned into the collective conscious minds of your average American because of these media. The American culture undoubtedly began to be shaped by celebrities, consumer products and huge corporate brands. Artists of this time recognized this trend and wanted to reflect this newly developed reality and began to highlight the mass production and sensational nature of the mainstream media. Take the famous pop art artists himself, Andy Warhol, for example, making multiple copies of the same photograph over and over or Claes Oldenburg's overt larger than life depictions of decadence and food consumption. Whether these artists did it intentionally or not, they called into question many of the established values of art. Pop artists also brought attention to how other ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. Land Art History When it emerged in the sixties among the crush of several other art movements (Pop Art, Minimalism, among others) Land Art came to be an anti–gallery artistic offshoot that straddled the domain between architecture and sculpture. It had no manifestos nor schools nor leaders and it was not quite a movement; the artists who were involved with it were also involved in other types of arts. Land art was labelled as modern 'sculpture' but its versatility and introduction of new concepts and visual materials made it difficult to ascribe it to one field or term. Later on, the term "Earth Works," coined by Robert Smithson came to use but Earth Works only refers to works that use earth while Land Art is an all–encompassing umbrella that includes works ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Smithson's work Broken Circle & Spiral Hill is two different works situated near each other. It is actually not in America but was commissioned for an exhibition in the Netherlands near Emmen. Spiral Hill is an earth mound that coils clockwise unto itself, like a sleeping snake. When it was completed it was just shaped earth but in current day it is covered in green grass. Situated nearby on the edge of the shore and into the water is the Broken Circle; its site was actually a functioning sand and gravel quarry which was filled with green water. Smithson played with the negative and positive space in such a way that the broken circle whose alternating arms are shaped with white and yellow sand, recalls the Chinese Yin Yang symbol. In the middle of the positive space half circle sits a boulder and this is yet again another allusion to monumental works of the past, this one appropriately native to Dutch lands. "Yet the center boulder in fact significantly expands the associative levels of this work because it offers a direct tie to prehistory. . . . In the Bronze Age they [this type of large rock] were used to make huge dolmens and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 6. Appropriation In Art History 'Appropriation in art and art history refers to the practice of artists using pre–existing objects or images in their art with little transformation of the original' (Tate, no date). Artists have been appropriating for many centuries and tend to use the most iconic of masterpieces from the past and make them more contemporary for today's style. The 'Mona Lisa' by Leonardo Da Vinci is one of the greatest examples of this act. It is one of the most famous and well known paintings ever created; however the piece has been manipulated by other artists, so much that the meaning behind the original is indefinite. If a piece of which is so recognisable in our society be stolen from other artists, this leaves us with the question– Is art original? ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... But knowing makes me have a different opinion. This still puzzles my thoughts of originality in art and whether it matters in our society. This is a representation of the Marilyn Monroe Piece by Yu Youhan produced in the Chinese century of political pop. Youhan replicated the same method to Warhol's all time famous artwork but altered the subject of the design. Instead of Monroe he replaced the figure as the chairman Mao. He used Mao as part of a memorial as he played a big part in his political life. By doing this, it changes the meaning of the painting and Mao becomes the centre of attention and the main topic of the piece. I am now going to discuss Cindy Sherman and her film scenes. She was a big believer in Feminism and is well known for recreating film stills replacing the original actors with her. Although Sherman's work is entitled as one of those artists who appropriate, I would consider her work to be quite original. Yes, you could say that because she has copied film scenes that her work isn't original but personally I believe that her work is trying to make a change and represent ... • 7. Art History And Its Impact On Art Art history allows for a greater understanding of the progression of human thought and how conditions from one time period to another are reflected in art. Humanity represents itself through art and by doing so we are able to take a deeper look into the mentality and emotions that were held within a certain time period. Human studies such as cultural studies or history only highlight small specific areas of humanity while art history combines the two and gives a comprehensive look into all factors that influenced not only the art of a certain time but the events that influenced certain styles. Through the study of art history we are able to see the different events that caused shifts in prospective and influenced changes in art styles. For example the iconoclasm during the protestant reformation drastically altered the type of art that was being produced and greatly limited forward progression of certain styles. All images of God, Jesus, and any other paintings or sculptures that depicted images of "false idols" were destroyed or removed from view. In ancient Egypt, the carved visages of some pharaohs were obliterated by their successors. The destruction of art was used as a way to influence ideas through out a community of people. By limiting the growth of art, the recorded history of Christianity was greatly altered. Humanity is constantly changing and evolving in relation to its surroundings as viewed through the study of art. Art is all encompassing of a multitude of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 8. Feminist Theory Of Griselda Pollock "Foucault's work gave the terms discursive practices and discursive formation to the analysis of particular institutions and their ways of establishing orders of truth, or what is accepted as 'reality' in a given society" (Goldberg). Discursive formations display hierarchical arrangement and are understood as reinforcing certain already established identities or subjectivities– in matters of sexuality, status, or class for example. These dominant discourses are understood as in turn reinforced by existing systems of law, education and the media". Foucault's work is to show that members of society such as intellectuals, "are implicated in discourse and in the discursive regimes or systems of power and regulation which give them their livelihoods ... (Millhouse, 2011) In the 1980's Pollock's Feminism "critiqued the essential myths of individualism, the artist, and the social constructions of femininity and masculinity that define bourgeois culture". While the 70's feminism movement aim was to stand next to the existing masculine dominated culture. "Feminism's encounter with the canon has been complexed and many–leveled: political ,ideology, mythological, methodological and psycho–symbolic" (Pollock, 1999). The 1970's movement was followed by the immediate task which was "the need to rectify the gaps in historical knowledge created by the consistent omission of women of all cultures from the history of art" (Pollock, 1999). The only art that was put on display was significantly male dominated work, if you wanted to see work created by women, you would have to view them "in a basement or storeroom of a national gallery" (Pollock, 1999). • 9. The History of Art The uniqueness of Japanese art, especially in terms of Chinese art, depends on the historical era. As Lee (1962) points out, "There are periods in Japanese art where the artist is either copying, or is heavily influenced by, Chinese art. At such times it can be said that Japanese art is a strong reflection of Chinese art," (p. 3). At other times, though, small differences between the arts of China and Japan are "magnified to such an extent that they become fully developed and original styles," (Lee, 1962, p. 3). With regards to modern art, Japan is far more the influencer of Chinese art than vice–versa, as Fogel (2012) points out. Therefore, it is impossible to make a blanket statement about the relative uniqueness of Japanese art. Certainly there are periods in which Japanese art is so heavily influenced by Chinese art that it could even be lumped together in a similar category. Museum curators dealing with large amounts of inventory from classical Chinese and Japanese art frequently do classify East Asian art together as if the differences between Chinese and Japanese art are too negligible to be of any serious importance. For example, the Saint Louis Art Museum (2008) compiles all its art of China and Japan, also including the arts of Korea. This is because the curated collection is a reflection of a specific historical epoch: that of the spread of Buddhism throughout East Asia. "Buddhist monks traveling between China, Korea, and Japan carried religious and artistic ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 10. Art History : Art Criticism Jenessa Asch Professor Caratzola Art History 202 Term Paper Draft Art History is the study of objects of art in their historical development and stylistic contexts. The history of art, we feel, can sometimes be confused with art criticism. However, Art History is concerned with finding the value of the artistic piece in respect with others in the same category of art or movement, and art criticism is more of an evaluation of art. The art examined best represents the culture during the time period, visions the artist imagined, and history behind an event. It also represents society in a specific area, beliefs the people may have, writing that tells a story, the natural world and environment, conflict between people and areas, and the human body. With these representations, artwork overall represents the life in which we live (d). Each piece has its own genre, design, format and style to it. This makes each piece extremely different, yet pleasing to the eye. They also vary between paintings, sculptures and architecture. These different types also make a variety of artwork to be seen by all people. The art pieces that I chose, Jar, Bottle and Glass by Juan Gris, The Persistence of Memory by Salvador Dalí, and Starry Night by Vincent Van Gogh, seemed interesting to me and I believe to best represent the context in which they were created, along with the major artistic movements of the time. Art history is a very unique type of history because it allows for people to visualize earlier life and how our ancestors survived, perceived themselves and their surroundings during different time periods. This art comes from different eras and locations such as the Paleolithic Period, Neolithic Period, early civilization, Mesopotamia, and Egypt. Beginning somewhere around 2 million years prior to today, early hominids, in east–central Africa, crafted the first ever tools that could be used to cut and shape stone. The greatest works of Egyptian civilization are the Great Pyramids, which are comparable to the size of mountains and severed as tombs for fallen Pharaohs. It was a common belief in Egypt that in order for someone to reach the afterlife, their body on Earth had to be preserved and taken care of with respect. All bodies were embalmed as quickly as possible and then were buried in their tomb to rest for all eternity. Inside these pyramids and tombs, architects spent a great deal of time and effort building false hallways and walls in an effort to keep people from reaching the actual resting place of the deceased. We were finally able to get a better understanding as to why architects tried to keep people from reaching the tombs and why grave robbers were so active when we discovered the Tomb of Tutankhamen. Tutankhamen, also known as King Tut, died at the age of 18 and is so well documented because his tomb was discovered in modern times with most of his valuables left inside. Signs include, among others, sounds, images, words, odors, objects; they are concepts that stand for something else in a system of signification. This idea is intrinsically related to the concepts of the sender and the viewer, which will be discussed in the next sections of this paper. The second issue discussed by the art historians is the sender of a work. In this section, Bal and Bryson define and differentiate the composition of the ''artist'' of a work. First, there is the concept of the sender as an individual, or J. Bloggs, as they call him. J. Bloggs stands for the name of the individual, ''a designation, not a description;[...] it does not assign any particular characteristics to its bearer''(p.181). The second aspect of the sender is the author, which is ''in the works, in a body of artifacts and in the complex operations performed on them''(p.181). It is the notions of enframement that distinguishes J.Bloggs from the author, which is what Bal and Bryson identify as ''an elaborate work of framing, something we can elaborately produce rather than something we simply find'' (p. 181). The art historian, Culler, explains that authorship is given, not produced, as he states that ''what counts as authorship is determined by interpretative strategies''(p.181). Thus, in simpler terms, the author or artist could be produced in the sense that his attributed works and other interpretable material, and ultimately produce a conception. The irresponsibility of the aristocracy was no longer ignored, and a movement was beginning. This set the stage for political change. It was during this Age of Enlightenment that the Neoclassical era in art history began by reflecting these changing views using a style much less ornate and gilded than the Baroque and Rococo styles that had previously dominated artistic endeavors. Strict adherence to simple classical style with an aim to technical perfection was favored and borrowed heavily from Greek and Roman pieces discovered earlier in the 1700s. Today, it is a term that classifies the history and culture of Western Europe from 11th to 12th century. This type of art is known for its religious imagery, style of architecture, and sculptures that were heavily influenced by Christianity. One of the most famous pieces of Romanesque art that emerged from this era was the Bayeux Tapestry. Although Romanesque art is mainly religious, the tapestry is not about a Christian figure, but a pictorial narrative that depicts in full detail the events that lead to the Norman conquest of England. "It presents a rich representation of a particular historic moment as well as providing an important visual source for eleventh–century textiles that have not survived into the twenty–first century" (khan). The Bayeux Tapestry is an artistic masterpiece that provides us with both historical and artistic information about Medieval England. Measuring about 20 inches high and 230 feet long, the Bayeux Tapestry is an embroidered fabric that has imagery and inscriptions that were sewn on linen. To call this artwork a "tapestry" is a misrepresentation, since tapestry designs are woven as part of the fabric. History of Dance in Art Dance, Music, and Performance "The Joy of Life" Introduction In the nineteenth century some of the greatest innovations come from artists who strove to discover if art could work on the same level as music. I have decided to research the relationship between art, dance, and music. The interpretation of dance and music in art continually developed during the twentieth century. Firstly dance as a subject matter, drawn narratively and may have a symbolic meaning. This then moved on to dance interpreted emotionally. Thirdly music and dance can be interpreted abstractly. Endell's hypothesis (Fig.1) shows this idea of art working abstractly. Arshile Gorky describes abstraction as "allowing man to see with his mind what he cannot ... It solved Matisse's problems of form and space, outline and colour, structure and orchestration that Matisse had always sought to harmonize. It also allowed him to pay full attention to the importance of line rhythms and form which in the past he had to sacrifice to colours and tonal relations. Matisse said, it "allowed me to seek a new means of expression" which Matisse believed had "beneficent radiation". If you try to think of a necessary condition for a game to be a game, there will always be some game that refutes the condition, or some game that we could invent that would not fit that condition, but could fit many others. The question of whether something is or is not art does not require us to see if all its properties fit into some specific set of necessary and sufficient conditions; rather, it requires us to ask whether or not we will make a decision to "enlarge the set of conditions for applying the concept (Weitz, 188)." For both games and art there are no essential properties, there are only "family resemblances", or relational similarities that allow us to recognize whether a thing is close enough to be considered "art" or "a game". Weitz offers a great summation of his argument concerning the "openness" of the concept of art: "What I am arguing, then, is that the very expansive, adventurous character of art, its ever–present changes and novel creations, makes it logically impossible to ensure any set of defining properties. We can, of course, choose to close the concept. In response to the Italian government, the Getty museum essentially argued that there was no concrete proof that the statue was from Morgantina. However, the museum willfully returned 26 other objects that Italians claimed to be looted, but fundamentally refused to release the Ancient Greek Sculpture. The Italian government is asking for the return of the statue back to its country of origin, considering it is an important part of their culture. The town's mayor made clear "The statue and its discovery has become part of our culture and folklore, it's clear we have to reclaim it." As for the museums position, they are sticking with the argument that there needs to be ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 28. Art-History Evaluation For the past few weeks I have been sorting through the collection of postcards. I selected the ones that had to with people on the street of India. I find it interesting that this collection has large potion of people represented from lower classes. My curiosity also orientates around the way in which India was being portrayed to the West. I am currently taking notes on what literally shown in each postcard as well as a list of questions that I associate with them. The questions will be the base for what I research for the postcards and the questions I can most readily answer or have explanations to will be the basis of the exhibit. So far the majority of post cards shown Indian people who seem to be under fed, dirty, and working. I believe three out of about fifty people were wearing shows. The most disturbing photos are series of starving children, a line of women picking bugs out of each other hair (looking extremely ape like), and stack of starved corpses. In Art–History the first step is always to identify what is exactly in each image which is what I have done for every individual post card. From there I started asking questions, hopefully when I start my research I will be able to find most of answers to those questions. The challenging part to this part of the process is that it sometimes becomes redundant from post card to post card however, I believe it is important that the composition of each be acknowledged. I Have found little details in some that I might have missed otherwise, like a tool on piece of silk or a child hiding in the shadows. The most enjoyable aspect of this work so far is being thorough, and knowing I am working to a larger end. I hope by the end of this semester I will be an expert on these post ... The Expanding Discourse Summary The introduction to The Expanding Discourse and Reclaiming Female Agency: Feminist Art History After Postmodernism as well as the interview A Dialogue with Linda Nochlin, the Maverick She all provide a discourse on feminist art history through several decades that is enlightening and somewhat startling. These essays explore some of the intricacies and changes within the history of this relatively new methodology of art history and, though these essays do not go into great detail, they do offer a helpful survey that is brief, yet informative, for this particular discipline of art history. What is clear is that feminist art history is not meant to sway art history solely towards the feminist perspective, but to add it to the art historical canon to even out any inequalities. By continuously questioning any theories of both traditional art history, but also those of postmodernism, the evolution of feminist art history continues to develop, hopefully to its benefit. Clearly, feminist art history has come a long way in a comparatively short time; however, this does not mean that there is not room for improvement. Indeed, after reading these essays, there is a distinctly obvious need to take action to advance feminist art history so that, in turn, other methodologies of art history can develop to become more effective, influential, and inclusive. It is astonishing to learn how complicated that feminist art history truly is, for there are so many factors that must be taken into consideration, and the span of these factors only continues to ... While studying art history in Pre–Industrial Visual Cultures this semester, one theme has become painfully obvious. There are few if any women artists included in the study of art history. If you dig deep into the books you can find mention of many unknown, unrecognized and often times very talented women artists from the past. Women in history are simply not recognized, and this is due to a large extent to their exclusion from the art world. My paper chooses to focus on a few female artists of the sixties and seventies who sought to make up for past history and ensure women were known. These women ... Along with this there are hundreds of other names and these include past women artists including Artemisia Gentileschi and Mary Cassatt. The purpose of this piece was to show how many women from history are unrecognized and forgotten. These women have made lasting and powerful contributions to our society and yet they are essentially left out of history and overshadowed by their male counterparts. This was especially true in art history, and Chicago attempted to show how important it was that females have a place in history. Therefore the exclusion of women from history, had a profound impact on Chicago and greatly impacted her art making. The Dinner Partyî utilizes female sexual imagery to further establish a female presence in the work. The plates for ìThe Dinner Partyî clearly depict vaginal imagery. Chicago termed this imagery central core imagery and she attempted to invent a new female language. Chicago in an interview with Lucy Lippard says that, ìif women make art differently from men, it means that women are actually independent from menî (Lippard, 228). Her work was trying to eradicate the negative stereotypes people had about females and establish the importance of women both in the past and present. This work sought to repair some of the damage suffered from the exclusion ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 32. Survey of Art History Survey of Art History II Man Ray like many other artists did not care to have his personal life shown in his art. He wanted to be viewed and recognized for his work which included sculptures, paintings, and photography. Man Ray was mostly influenced by Stieglitz's photographs. Man Ray used a similar style to Stieglitz. He captured images that created an unvarnished look at the photos' subject. Man Ray discovered a new way to create his photos; by accident in his work room he discovered how to manipulate objects in his photos on pieces of photosensitive paper. In the year 1914, at a seminal exhibition, Man Ray introduced himself to African art. Man Ray did this at the Alfred Stieglitz 291 Gallery. Man Ray's photograph Noire et Blanche became an icon for modern photography. Although this was his most famous and widely known piece, Man Ray's less known work made a greater impact and influence on African art. Photographs with African art pieces began to flourish greatly after Man Ray's break through with his Noire et Blanche photograph. These photographs shed light on many day to day issues such as: issues of race, identity, sex, separatism, and disenfranchisement. Noire et Blanche shows Kiki –Man Ray's companion– with her eyes closed and her head sideways on a table in a very relaxed manner. It made a great contribution to the development of literature, architecture, science, philosophy and many other aspects of the society of those times. In the 15th century, Europe underwent a lot of improvements. It evolved from medieval feudal sates that were governed by wealthy landowners into town centers that were concentrated, functioning as powerful economical nuclei. The cities took political and financial power and the middle classes, that mainly consisted of artisans, merchants and bankers, had a significant responsibility in commerce with their independence and wealth. This economic prosperity was in particular marked in Italy where several palaces and villas were constructed to create a big demand for spendthrift domestic art and furniture. These were the requirements for the newly wealthy and the established aristocratic patrons. For example, the Farnese table of the metropolitan had a marble inlay and was commissioned for a rich papal family. This represents the kind of monumental furniture mostly found in the newly constructed spacious interiors of the superb palaces. Giotto was the first to start Italian Renaissance art as a painter who broke with the tradition of Byzantine art and made advances in presenting the human body in a ... Although I was not familiar with all the famous European artists and how much the paintings valued, I was mesmerized by the animated pictures on the wall. Standing before the painting, I felt an unspeakable pleasure permitted only to god himself. From that moment, I knew I was destined to be an artist, just like them in the Louvre. With the intense passion I had for arts, I kept digging the deeper level of artistic technique and appreciation. Unfortunately, as I learnt more about art history and style, I could not resist a sense of boredom. Now technology was developing at a rapid rate, but, in contrast, traditional arts became more and more pale and powerless. However, in their time, artists like Da Vinci and Raphael were superstars like Lady Gaga in our time.
