The Battle of Iwo Jima started February 19, 1945 and ended in late March. It was a battle fought between right around 70,000 U.S. soldiers and
about 20,000 Japanese soldiers. Three divisions of U.S. Marines invaded the island with one goal, to capture the Japanese airfields. This battle was a
huge turning point in World War II and helped end the war. The battle of Iwo Jima happened because the location of the island was tactically
important. Iwo Jima was close enough to the main island of Japan that the U.S. could send fighter jets with bombers to bomb the main island. There

The U.S. suffered more casualties, but more Japanese troops died. There were approximately 6,800 U.S. troops dead and approximately 17,000
wounded. All except about 1,000 Japanese troops died in battle and the rest were taken prisoner. This showed the U.S. just how willing the Japanese
were to give their lives to defend their country. Since Iwo Jima was much closer to the other islands of Japan than the Marianas, the B–29 bombers

The American forces plan consisted of a "divide and conquer" methodology. The U.S. focused on landing its assault force expediently and quickly

The Japanese soldiers went into battle knowing that they would be killed and they would not make it off the island. One of the most shameful acts
for a Japanese soldier to do is surrender, and it was very common for the soldiers to commit suicide before turning themselves in to the enemy. To
commit suicide and avoid capture of the enemy was considered noble and heroic in the Japanese military. In a way, the soldiers were brainwashed

The Marines were led by Major General "Howlin' Mad" Smith. He used the 3rd, 4th, and 5th division to assault and take the island. On February
23rd, the newly formed Marine 28th regiment fought its way up the 556 feet high extinct volcano called Mt. Suribachi. The American objective was

Battles in the Pacific In World War II, there were numerous Battles in the Pacific ocean. Some were scary and
some were bloody and some were quiet and some were loud, but most of all some were deadly,
life threatening. The troops that had to go out and fight the battles were brave. Especially
to go fight on water in boats and submarines and in the air with planes. You would never know
when you were go to get shot down or lose your life. It would be a surprise if you live and
miracle perhaps.

One of the most bloodiest battles in World War II is Iwo Jima (Chenoweth 234). It began
at 2:00 on February 19,1945 in the Pacific ocean on the island of Iwo Jima, 650 miles from

worst because so many casualties had happened so many loved ones were lost (Chenoweth 237).

The 3rd Marine division was to stay in reserve but after the fifth day of battle, fighting was fierce and they had to push the 3rd Marine division
forward. The Japanese, under the leadership of General Kuribayashi, had over 20,000 Japanese soldiers. All told that many died on that island, either

Ira Hayes was one of the flag raisers captured in the famous picture on Iwo Jima hill. Ira Hayes was a Pima Indian born in Arizona on the twelfth
of January 1932. Ira dropped out of high school just before going into his junior year. He went on to join the conservation corps for two months in
1942 ,after this he became a carpenter. Ira Hayes enlisted in United States the Marine Corps Reserve in Phoenix Arizona. He was soon assigned to
parachute boot camp in Gillespie Marine Corps Base in San Diego California. On December 2, he joined company B, 3rd Parachute Battalion,
division special troops third Marine division, stationed in California. Ira and his company were sent to Noumea, New Caledonia March 1943.
Again, Ira Haye's and his unit was resigned to Company K, 3rd Parachute Battalion, First Marine Parachute Regiment. They were sent to Vella
Lavella to occupy an island until December 3rd. They pushed north and fought the Japanese for a full 15 days. Hayes was ordered to return to U.S
soil after 11 months of fighting the enemy. He was then reassigned to Company E, 2nd Battalion, 28th Marines, 5th marine division in camp
Pendleton, California. Hayes was sent to Hawaii for more combat training, before he made land in Iwo Jima he was sent to Europe to assist Iin allied
efforts. He landed for d–day combat, February 19, 1945. He stayed and fought until the 26 of March. Afterwords he left for again Hawaii, soon after

The Americans began to tire from the constant deaths and destruction to their bombers and began to see this little island even more vital to their
success in this battle . There were two other reasons as well that the island would be of such strategic importance and why they needed to gain full
control of Iwo Jima. The first being the Japanese having radar capabilities there that would allow them to predict attacks as much as two hours in
advance. In addition to this and the most important reason for the Americans, were the airstrips that the island was equipped with. The airstrips would
permit the United States much safer and more direct access to their bombing targets as well as allow them a well–located location to refuel and rest.
The airfields were of key strategic importance also because of their size and location. The Japanese had put together three airfields along the central
plateau of Iwo Jima, two of the airfields were built in the form of an X and were approximately 5,225 and 4,425 feet and the third was just a single

Throughout school, many students come in contact with the picture of the six marines raising the American flag in the battle of Iwo Jima. The
students also know this picture as a statue that was made to honor all of those that were lost in this tragic battle. James Bradley wanted to change how

By the end of the chapter, all six men are transferred to a special unit of the Marines to begin a year of hard training. This is where they found out that
they were going on a special mission to "Island X", later revealed as Iwo Jima. This training camp was also where they all met because they were in the

Which was made up of big rocks, volcanic ash. Which put the Marines at a disadvantage, not allowing them to dig in or build foxholes to take cover
from enemy fire. The only good thing that came out the ash was that it absorbed some fragments from Japanese artillery. The Japanese heavy artillery in
Suribachi was reinforced with steel doors and would only open them to fire, and then would closed them immediately to prevent receiving damage from
the Marines and naval gunners. This made it a challenge for American units to destroy the heavily fortified Japanese artillery position. To make things

The genre of my book is Non–Fiction. Flags of our Father is the tittle of my book. The authors of the book are James Bradley and Ron Powers. The
story takes place in the spring of 1998 four years after the death of his father on Mount Suribachi In Iwo Jima. James Bradley tells the story of his
father John Bradley and the six men that raised the flag in Iwo Jima. The main characters are John Bradley, Rene Gagnon, Harlon Block, Franklin
Sousley, Mike Strank, Ira Hayes, James Bradley. John Bradley was the one of three survivors of the six men who raised the flag. After the war he
went back to Wisconsin where he married his "third grade sweet heart," opened a funeral home, and raised eight children. Franklin Sousley was
killed during the war. He was shot in the back while wandering in an open road. Harlon Block also died in the war. He was initially mistaken for
another man years before. Mike Strank was also killed in the war. He was a Czech citizen, and he joined the marine although he was excused for the
draft. Ira Hayes was a survivor of the war. He suffered from post–traumatic stress disorder that led he to become an alcoholic. James Bradley is the son
of John Bradley and he found as much information as he could about the men in the picture and now he is telling their stories.

U.S believed that the island would be able to be taken in a few weeks time due to the fact that it looked very un–fortified from aerial photos. This,
however, was a grave mistake. The Japanese General, Tadamichi Kuribayashi, had built the underground tunnels for the effect of making the island
look vulnerable. Knowing that defeat was unavoidable, the General had created the entrenchments to inflict as many casualties as possible on the U.S
before they captured the island, and to discourage the U.S from attacking Japan. The fight for control of Iwo Jima lasted thirty eight days. Over that
course of time the U.S. lost almost six thousand Marines with another eighteen thousand men wounded. The Japanese however lost around twenty one
thousand men. This was the only battle during the war with Japan when the U.S. suffered more casualties than the Japanese. Being one of the
bloodiest battles of the war, the taking of Iwo Jima served as a valuable lesson for the upcoming Okinawa campaign. In the weeks following, the battle

Even though he had some buildings built to satisfy his command his primary focus was on the construction of an elaborate system of tunnels
underground that connected every part of the island. The General learned that if he mixed the natural volcanic ash on the island with concrete it
mad an almost indestructible barrier. All together General Kuribayashi built over eleven miles of tunnels which housed a number of rooms to
accommodate all of his needs. On the south side of the island he constructed an airfield for the Japanese fighter planes to use. When America did

In 1945, the United States had declared war on Japan after they had attacked Pearl Harbor. Since Japan was an island, the U.S. wouldn't be able to
directly attack them. It was too far away for an air raid and naval raids would be too predictable and wouldn't work. So, the United States had to think
of a way to attack the Japanese. They decided that since the Japanese were still fighting against other countries, they could attack the smaller islands
