The Manifestations of Marxism in The God of Small Things
Arundhati Roy's novel The God of Small Things presents the reader with the realities of Marxism.
Roy gives the reader an impression of three possible manifestations of the ideology, rather than
presenting a biased reading for or against Marxism. Through Roy's novel the reader comes to
understand Marxism as it appears through Velutha, the oppressed worker, Chacko the Marxist–in–
name only, and Comrade Pillai, the corrupt politician. Comrade Pillai epitomizes the idea of a
corrupt politician. During his first scene in the novel, Roy describes him as "walking through the
world like a chameleon. Never revealing himself, never appearing not to. Emerging through chaos
unscathed." (Roy 15) Furthermore, Comrade Pillai champions himself as an ally of the oppressed
and common people, but it is in reality a façade. Comrade Pillai is in reality a champion only for his
own interests. An example of Comrade's Pillai's selfish corruption is the way that he watches the
workers of Paradise Pickles and Preserves: Comrade Pillai had begun to watch the goings–on at
Paradise Pickles with the keenness of a substitute at a soccer match. To bring in a new labor union,
however small, in what he hoped to be his future constituency would be an excellent beginning for a
journey to the Legislative Assembly. (Roy 114) Roy uses the phrase "keenness of a substitute at a
soccer match" to describe Comrade Pillai's attitude toward the workers of Paradise Pickles and
Preserves. This phrase seems to suggest

In Irmgard Keun's Intimacy As A Commodity
Intimacy as a Commodity:
Irmgard Keun's Doris and Prostitution as a Symbol of Modernity In Irmgard Keun's 1932 novel The
Artificial Silk Girl, Doris, an independent–minded and flirtatious young woman, chronicles her
search for stardom and resulting chaos as she attempts to get by in the tumultuous sociopolitical
scene of 1930's Berlin. Encouraged by her naive dream of reaching stardom, an ideal that she feels
will protect her from the ridicule, judgment and manipulation that she has learned to expect from
others, Doris walks a precarious line between the lofty bourgeois lifestyle of the effortless star she
aspires to be and a life of utter desperate prostitution, where she is forced to commodify her body
and flirtatious spirit to supply her ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
With the commodification of both material goods and human beings that comes hand in hand with
modernity and urbanization, prostitution became a widespread practice for young women in search
of independence outside of a world of marriage or "assembly–line factories" and "mechanized
offices with typewriters, filing cabinets, and switchboards" (Smith). Like Doris, these women hoped
for a more exciting life that did not depend upon working for a boss you "have to hate" because they
can "dismiss you" (Keun 161). To some, such as Austrian writer Vicki Baum, prostitution was
regarded as an honest way of maintaining independence from the patriarchal institution of marriage
that opened opportunities for young women to make a life for themselves, paved by sexual
liberation. However, many Germans, especially those outside of Berlin, whose experiences with
prostitution consisted only of horror stories of thousands of scantily clad young women roaming the
previously dignified streets of their capital, feared that prostitution marked the decline of their

The Importance of Self-Awareness in Counselling
––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––– HOW DOES A COUNSELLOR
DIFFER FROM A FRIEND? Folashade Oloniyo Abstract In this essay, the characteristics of a
counsellor and a friend will be expanded upon in order to gain a greater knowledge for deciphering
the two. We all have been in situations where we hit a brick wall in our life and are unsure of the
next step or the next move to make. We have close friends to whom we can turn and reach out to,
but in some situations, are they really our best option for help? Friends are needed for support on
many levels, but on others, professional reinforcement may be of greater good. With that said, I
challenge you the reader and ask the questions: What is counselling? How does a counsellor ...

I told her that as long as she keeps the door to her life open, he will continue to come back and let
himself in. she says its hard, that she's afraid to let him go and stand alone. My question to her was,
'are you happy now? He sleeps with you when he needs a fix, but lives with another woman and
their child. You can't tell me that you're happy. It may hurt for a while, but trust me; you'll thank
God that you did it in the end. I'm sorry about your loss, and please don't get upset when I say this,
but I do believe everything happens for a reason. You should deem this your second chance.' I could
feel she didn't like my delivery, but I also felt that I was heard. All I can do is hope and pray that my
words solidify in the back of her mind.'' As a counsellor, you have an obligation to remain objective
and non–judgmental at whatever is said to you by your client. I can recall feeling slightly
judgmental; I thought to myself that my client/friend was making completely unhealthy and unwise
decisions. Her actions were so silly and desperate and completely opposite to how I would have
acted. I attempted to transfer my views as diplomatically as possible, trying not to cause a wall of
defense to be built. In an actual client and counsellor setting, this type of thinking definitely defies
objectivity standpoints that counsellors should ensue. Objectivity is

Theme Of Isolation In Frankenstein
The film opens on the main character Victor Van Dort, the son of recently wealthy aristocrats, being
forced to Victoria, daughter to a family of even wealthier aristocrats. (Russell) The Van Dorts are
looking to raise their status in society through the marriage to the aristocrats, and the Everglots are
hoping to further bury their secret bankruptcy and get their hands on the money they, wrongly,
assume Victor's family has. At the very beginning, Victor is shown to be a very reserved, shy
character when he is shown alone in his room drawing a butterfly while his parents sing excitedly
about the upcoming wedding. This also emphasizes the drastic differing opinions about the wedding,
and how Victor obviously dreads it. "This introduces the classic character of the old foolish woman
through Victor's mother and gives the audience a silent look into the character of Victor. He is
isolated at the beginning by his own will." (Drouillard). Isolated protagonists are used often in
Gothic fiction as seen in another Victor, this one Frankenstein, who hides himself away to focus on
work. Before the wedding, it's very obvious that Victor is nervous, and the parents are just as
worried that he will not perform correctly at the ceremony. As he rehearses in the woods, Victor
manages to properly say his vows, puts the wedding ring on a hand–like branch, and everything
goes smoothly. Of course, in a fantasy, nothing truly goes as planned and the branch–like hand is
revealed to be a real hand.

Personal Essay : Self Espect And Self-Respect
According to Merriam–Webster, self–respect is a proper respect for oneself as a human being. I do
not call it self–respect when I constantly beat myself down with words. One must put themselves in
a position of self–respect with self–acceptance, self–worth and self–conceit. Prior to this time in my
life, I would continuously bully myself with malicious words. This hurtful content would come from
my own self or others. I had a visual idea of what I wanted myself to be. At the time, self–respect
did not look like beautiful flowers to me. On the inside, bruises covered my body, which looked
more like dead flowers living in me. Wicked words began eating up my body. Fast forward a few
years, I became well–educated on the term self–acceptance. ... Show more content on

Wanting to show kindness and love to others became my mission. Although, others do not
comprehend what kind means, I have learned to respect that and move on. Realizing that I know
longer need acquaintances, who do not act friendly, I came to the conclusion of what I deserve.
Surrounding myself with others who do not take me for granted, or who do not kill me with evil
words became a life choice I had to make for the better. Every individual needs to have the courage
to stand up for himself or herself and by knowing his or her own worth. Self–worth looks like a
pearl; a beautiful, smooth pearl that reveals itself, out of horror and pressure. I am self–worth.
Having self–respect for myself shows that I see myself as self–conceit. Self–conceit in my terms
means that I show pride in everything I have and will accomplish. Because my accomplishments
converge as an essential part of who I see myself as today, no one can take that away from me.
Respecting myself for most of my decisions made me not live with any regrets. In the century we
live in today, teenagers have peer–pressure all around them, especially on social media. Various
influences tempt many teens, which can have a positive or negative impact. To fit in is a goal all
adolescents attempt to achieve daily. I believe that as a teenager, I have remained modest through
circumstances I have face throughout high school. When I think about modesty, I see

Language in Indian Writing in English
Language in Indian Writing in English
I am here to present on the topic 'Language in Indian Writing in English'. Basically I will be talking
about the usage of language, the writing style, of blending language and culture and my analysis of
it in the text – The God of Small Things by Arundhati Roy.
The story of the Indian English novel is really the story of a changing India. There was a time when
education was a rare opportunity and speaking English was unnecessary. The stories were already
there– in the myths, in the folklore and the umpteen languages and cultures that gossiped,
conversed, laughed and cried all over the subcontinent. India has always been a land of stories, the
demarcation between ritual and reality being very narrow. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

The God of Small Things is not written in a sequential narrative style in which events unfold
chronologically. Instead, the novel is a patchwork of flashbacks and lengthy sidetracks that weave
together to tell the story of the Kochamma family. The main events of the novel are traced back
through the complex history of their causes, and memories are revealed as they relate to each other
thematically and as they might appear in Rahel's mind, the main protagonist of the story. Although
the narrative voice is omniscient, or all–knowing, it is loosely grounded in Rahel's perspective, and
all of the episodes of the novel progress towards the key moments in Rahel's life. This non–
sequential narrative style, which determines the form of the novel, is an extremely useful authorial
tool. It allows Roy a great deal of flexibility as she chooses which themes and events are most
important to pursue. The author is able to structure her book so as to build up to the ideas and events
at the root of the Kochamma family's experience.
One of the first elements of Roy's writing that readers confront as they begin this novel is her
creative vocabulary – creative in the sense that she makes up new words. In the first pages, for

The pressures between youth and its sports programs Essay
The Pressures Between Youth and Its Sports Programs
Over the last two decades the growth of youth sports has reflected the popularity of professional
sports in our society. Sporting events and news are available to the public twenty–four hours a day
on television and radio: sports is an enormous industry. The outstanding popularity of the sports
industry has greatly affected youth sports organizations. In order to supervise, teach and manage
these athletes it is estimated 2.5 million coaches spend an average of eighty hours a season with
them. The majority of these coaches volunteer for programs organized by the community, religious
organizations, and recreational facilities. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
. There are a huge number of children playing sports, but due to burnout, stress, psychological
trauma, and lowered self–esteem as many as seventy–three percent quit sports by the age of thirteen.
Rick Wolff, a former professional baseball player and coach, claims there are several factors
contributing to this phenomenon such as: parents and coaches putting excessive pressure on
children, specialization in one sport, over competitiveness, anxiety and loss of interest. This lack of
interest may stem from the fact that they are cut from a team, injured, or receive little playing time.
Another reason for high dropout rates is the structure of the programs. The sports programs are set
up by adults, run by adults, and maintained by adults with a precise date and time. Spontaneous play
and creativity are taken out of the equation. Coaches are choosing who plays and who doesn't in an
effort to win. A study found that 90% of all children would rather be on a losing team if they got to
play. Alfie Kohn, author of "No Contest", claims that competition will lead to the downfall of sports.
"The trouble with a hyper competitive culture like ours is that we not only leave the mechanism
intact but we create a network of reinforcement for winning at any cost. Cheating and the like can be
said to be over determined – called forth by both the intrinsic structure of competition and the
societal attitude toward it. . ." says Alfie Kohn.

Personal Narrative: My Experience Of Reading And Writing
Learning anything in school was very hard for me growing up because I always felt discouraged
when there were people learning the curriculum faster than I did or making better grades, but
reading and writing was something that I always wasn't discouraged with. I learned how to read and
write from experiences and creativity that I had or that was shown to me. My family had a lot of
issues and a lot of drama would happen that my brother and I caught in the middle of it so I found a
way out of it.
I learned to read all from one boring afternoon at my Dad's house. It was me and my brother in a
house where you can't do anything because the parents are jerks. Luckily my Dad had been given
some comic books by his friend and he gave them too us. Immediately we ran straight too those
godly books, prayed to the god know as Stan Lee for making these comic books. We were going
through them looking for which one too read. I found the one to read it was Marvel Zombies and the
pictures were amazing, but I couldn't make out the words well most of them. I decided to write some
of the words in a little personal dictionary and write the definitions even cuss words. This made me
realize their message of some of their messages or references and it opened a world of letters for me.
My brother and I stayed up all night organizing and reading them in chronological order when all of
a sudden, my brother stated freaking out.
My brother screamed from the top of his lungs, "Jacob, we are going to be

The Met Essay
I joined the class for the trip to the "Big Apple" on the eve of Halloween. We departed from a
campus parking lot early Saturday morning. Our destination was the Metropolitan Museum of Art,
which is located at 82nd Street and Fifth Avenue. I had never been to "the Met" before and I was
very impressed. I wandered throughout the museum going from gallery to gallery until I was able to
find the two paintings that interested me the most.
The first painting to catch my eye was the Virgin and Child with Saint Anne, which was painted by
Albrecht Durer around 1519. The German artist lived from 1471 to 1528 and is considered by many
the greatest German Renaissance artist of them all. Albrecht Durer used an oil medium on a wooden

The artist's palette had a fairly wide range of colors when painting this artwork. The use of many
different colors makes this a polychromatic work of art. He used a few warm colors along with a lot
of black and white. Most of the areas of this painting that are painted with warm colors are low in
saturation. This is shown in the clothing of the woman holding the child.
It seems the source of light comes from the top left hand corner of the painting. The light source
causes the three figures to have a high intensity level. This is shown on the child's face, which is not
only the focal point of this picture but also the highlight. Durer also used chiaroscuro to show the
depth in the painting. The shadow on the woman with the child makes the painting appear to be
three–dimensional. After seeing how representational a painting can be I decided to take a look at
the opposite end of the spectrum.
The other painting I chose is titled Stepping Out. Roy Lichtenstein did this painting in 1978. He
worked as a commercial artist as well as a graphic designer before becoming popular as a "Pop
Artist." Lichtenstein used a similar medium, which was oil and magna, but chose to paint his picture
on canvas instead of wood. While Stepping Out is still a portrait it is unlike Durer `s work in that it
is an abstract artwork. The male form in the painting is fairly realistic while the female form is very
surreal.
Lichtenstein also used

Every poem constructs a perception for every reader and most readers will have a different outcome

hidden messages and symbols in the poems for the readers to uncover, and in a lot of times it tends
to be difficult. Many poets will use their personal experiences to convey the message across to the
audience. It is still difficult for readers to understand the poem right away, as many poetry are
needed to be reread many times to understand the information that the poet is trying to get to the

themselves to look better physically. What defines a person isn't what's on the outside but within.
Asghar wants women to love themselves for what they have and not the superficial aspects of life.
The definition of beauty is complex, everyone has their own definition of what beauty holds. There
are advertisements on how a woman should look and many follow onto those beliefs. Women are

Thomas Reid versus Roy Baumeister Essay
The evolution of mankind has seem to have established a complex form of control that is directly
connected to popular conceptions of free will. Highly adaptive aspects, designated by self–control
and the idea of rational choice are crucial to successfully functioning within a given culture or
community. The processes that conceive such forms of free will could be biologically costly and
thus used only on occasion. Thus most individuals will tend to be only somewhat not completely
rational, disciplined and noble. This is the conclusion of Roy Baumeister, leader in the field of
psychology from Florida State University. Baumeister strongly believes that as a result of biological
processes willpower is no more than a limited resource. On the ... Show more content on

In addition, Baumeister concluded that ego depletion or willpower depletion can occur from making
simple decisions. This is because according to Baumeister, the same type of energy used for making
decisions is also used for self–control. Think of willpower as a gas tank that must supply both self–
control as well decision making processes. Consequently, this can lead to people avoiding to make
decisions, or making poorer decisions as a result. However, Baumeister claims that self–control with
regular use can be improved. Engaging in a number of different situations or certain activities that
demand good self–control can help to improve an individual's self–control ability. Truly,
Baumeister's assessments seem to suggest that over the evolution of mankind an expensive
biological process was created in order to control actions. This process involves using a large
amount of an individual's caloric diet to power psychological processes. These processes according
to Baumeister is what has enabled people to behave in ways that have been advantageous. On the
other hand, Thomas Reid does not believe free will to be a limited resource. Rather, Reid believes
more or less that free will is limitless. Reid acknowledges as metaphysical libertarian that free will
is a concrete thing and that not having the ability of free will is not possible, that the existence of a
nonphysical agent such as a

Often times social media can be regarded as a device that deteriorates the value and importance of
human communication. Most adults assume that millennials are using social media as a way to

the importance of social media and its impact on people. It has been found that social media can be
used as a creative outlet, way to socialize, learning tool, political outlet, and way to connect with

Martin Seligman 's Exploration Of Learned Helplessness,...
The world of science consistently generates new studies in various fields, yielding results that can
revolutionize society and shine light on the world we know so very little about. However, it is easy
to get lost in specific studies and view each one as its own, independent discovery. And while each
experiment provides an important look into the complexities of this world, science is an
amalgamation of many discoveries strung together in complex ways. This way, the merits of each
study can interrelate in order to further understand something else. In the realm of positive
psychology, it is important that a number of different scientific discoveries work together to explain
an overarching topic. For example, two studies that are interrelated are Martin Seligman's
exploration of learned helplessness, and Roy Baumeister's study on willpower depletion. Both are
important in their own rights, but by comparing both Seligman and Baumeister's experiments,
scientists can discuss the overarching concept of willpower as a depletable resource. Psychologist
Martin Seligman conducted an experiment that aimed to understand more about classical
conditioning. In his study, he rang a bell and lightly shocked a dog. Eventually, if the dog heard the
bell, it would react to the shock before it even happened. This was all good, it was a great example
of classical conditioning, but the truly interesting part of the study came later. Seligman constructed
a box with a small wall in the middle.

A UCLA study confirms that sensitivity to emotional pain resides in the same area of the brain as
physical pain – they can hurt equally. Our reaction to pain is influenced by genetics. If we have
increased sensitivity to physical pain, we 're more vulnerable to feelings of rejection. Moreover, love
stimulates such strong feel–good neuro–chemicals that rejection can feel like withdrawal from a
drug, says anthropologist Helen Fisher. It can compel us to engage in obsessive thinking and
compulsive behavior. This proved true even for tsetse flies in lab experiments.

The Moon is Down by John Steinbeck Essay
Throughout The Moon is Down by John Steinbeck, a controversial debate upon whether or not the
novel is successful in praising the ideals of democracy and free choice occurs. Some readers claim
this is not possible because the invaders are portrayed as sympathetic characters but I refuse to agree
with this argument. Throughout the book, I saw evidence to support the fact that the novel is
successful in praising democracy and free choice such as the inability for the invaders to take away

Molly Morden was a victim of the invader's iron fist but she was also trapped within the town, her
freedoms restricted. She proved that freedom, limited as it was, still existed when she killed
Lieutenant Tonder, revealing that free choice was successfully shown.
The popular novel by John Steinbeck is successful in praising the ideals of democracy and free
choice because it reveals the importance of the individual, an idea upon which democracy is formed.
Alex Morden states, "I'm not sorry. He told me to go to work – me, a free man! I used to be
alderman. He said I had to work." (p 53) Alex was the man who sparked the fire within the
townspeople's hearts. His freedom as an individual was taken away and because of this he killed
Captain Bentick, providing him with a death sentence. When Alex died, a rebellion began to grow,
his death the catalyst to regain the townspeople's freedom. As Alex is a symbol to the rebellion, the
individual is the symbol for democracy. Without freedom, you have no satisfaction that a democracy
grants. When the invaders no longer ran under the pretense of democracy and killed Alex, the
rebellion began to grow into a raging fight for freedom, proving that the ideal of democracy is
successful.
The Moon is Down is successful in its ideals because it shows the pain that occurs when freedom is
taken away. Molly Morden states, "I don't know why they let him come home. He was confused. He

Are Wildfires Good Or Bad
A sickness that spreads like wildfires, damaging and destroying everything in its path. Everyone
near it and everyone in it, is in some way harmed; either by the spread of it or the fire itself. Some
may say that wildfires are a part of nature, and in fact helpful and healthy in terms that after the fire,
nature has the opportunity to grow a new. But in the end the fire has such a destructive severity that
it causes more harm than good. Gossip and rumour can be interpreted in a similar way. like fire

Rumour and gossip is that which is uncertain to be true about someone that is spread around to
everyone else. In To Kill a Mockingbird, Lee proves this through characters Jem and Scout's idea of
Boo Radley: "inside the house lived a malevolent phantom....people said he went out when the
moon was down, and peeped in windows. When people's azaleas froze in the cold snap, it was
because he had breathed on them"(10). This demonstrates how gossip and rumour can be twisted up
about someone so much, that the person becomes this weird creep in the eyes of these children.
Also, Atticus (Jem and Scouts father) is the lawyer for a black man accused of rape in a trial, which
causes people around the town they live in–Maycomb– to gossip and spread rumours of how Atticus
is a "Nigger Lover" (Lee 110). Not only does this damage his reputation, but it also taunts there
children who are battered by people about it, and even though in the beginning scout didn't know
what it meant, people said it in such a negative way she new it was untrue about her father.
Moreover, an issue on a topic of the Effects of Rumour and Gossip was sent out to teens in the

Some believe that boundaries are made to be broken, that lines are meant to be crossed while others
believe that we should " not move an ancient boundary stone set up by [our] forefathers" (Proverbs

cross, but cross nonetheless. "As ye sow, ye shall reap" is a familiar proverb we have all heard at
one point in our lives (Roy 31). But is it true? Do we really get what we deserve? And if so, who
then decides what is right and wrong? Who draws the line? Who sets the boundary? In Arundhati

Exploring the Dark Side: Contrasting Themes in "Blue Velvet"
The subconscious psyche is one of the most fascinating and almost completely inexplicable aspects
of human behavior. Even more intriguing than merely the subconscious is the notion of a darker,
more repressed side that many individuals refuse to acknowledge exists within them. In David
Lynch's film "Blue Velvet," the director attempts to explore the psyche of a young man named
Jeffrey Beaumont, most notably the clash between his darker side and "good" side for the first time
in his life. Using themes that sharply contrast one another, Lynch provides insight into the character
of Jeffrey and the struggle that he is faced with. Jeffrey is in a transitional period of his life, ... Show

Lynch chooses to use such stark contrast in an effort to establish not only the differences in one's
perception, but of the psyche as well. The opening sequence is used by Lynch as a metaphor for
Jeffrey's state of mind throughout the entire film, as Jeffrey realizes he has a dark side yet is trying
(most of the time) to suppress it. The town of Lumberton, like Jeffrey, is an idealized version of
what America and Americans should be like and yet, much like Jeffrey's mind, it is full of dark
secrets and contradictions. One aspect of Jeffrey's psyche being explored is the notion of his battle
between innocent love for a young girl and the animalistic lust he possesses for an older, more
mature woman. The "good" or innocent side of Jeffrey is personified in the character of Sandy.
Sandy is often depicted wearing light colors, with blue eyes and perfectly brushed blonde hair.
When Sandy is first introduced into the film, she enters through utter darkness, stepping out of the
shadows and into the light in a medium shot. Lynch follows this up with a long reverse tracking two
shot in which Jeffrey and Sandy make small talk and innocently flirt with one another. Dorothy's
introduction into the film, however, is quite different. The film first truly introduces the audience
and Jeffrey to Dorothy with a subjective shot from her closet. After breaking into Dorothy's
apartment and

The Psychology Of Self Esteem
Furthermore, the effects of these awards go far beyond sports and contests. Being awarded at such a
young age for just about anything is highly misleading of how the real world works. Many young
Americans have developed a sense of entitlement, expecting to gain more in return for less effort.
Per a study done by Bernard Goldberg approximately one out of every three college students
believes they deserve a B just for attending their courses. This sense of privilege is an almost
contagious mind–set that has only gotten worse. But many ask how exactly the idea that one should
be rewarded for almost anything began?
The self–esteem movement was developed in 1969 after Nathaniel Branden wrote "The Psychology
of Self–Esteem." The idea Branden proposed was that self–esteem is essential to overall success in
life. This caused many parents to believe that, if they could start by increasing their children's self–
esteem they would become more successful in the future. This brought up ideas intended to help
children gain more confidence and self–worth. For example, all children should receive participation
awards so that no child would feel bad for not winning. Consequently, studies have found that
children's self–image may be negatively impacted by the ideas behind participation trophies and
awards. Yet, parents still encourage rewards be given to all children.
There seem to be two obvious reasons why parents want their children to receive trophies. One, they
are terrified of how

Theme Of Alienation In The God Of Small Things
This paper deals with the emotional alienation in Arundhati Roy's The god of Small Things. Our
society has created an identity for women since ancient days. Women are considered as a weaker sex
and inferior to men. Though she plays an important role in her life, she is not found as an individual
human being with all emotions and sufferings. She is supposed to live a life of dedication,
surrendering and devotion. In Indian fiction, the women are modeled with the above qualities. Those
qualities of women created a large impact on the Indian psyche and the expectation of society, and
consciously or unconsciously they have molded themselves to conform to this image. The
expectations were raised regarding the behaviour of women, women were been ... Show more

She is perhaps the first Indian Women novelist who gained such a big global market for Indian
Writing in English. The novel The God of Small Things became so immensely popular among
lovers of fiction. Arundhati Roy was not only a leisure girl with all the time to try out an ambitious
opus but a brave and promising writer in English.
Some literary critics have contradictory views on Arundhati Roy's creative genius. Such critics have
perceived a rather new, arrogant girl showing up, one who even finds it gallant to be compared to
Rushdie and has developed a sense of inverted show for all that. Yet, she remains a Kottayam girl.
The sense of moral uprightness of a Christian community seeps through in her book.

This essay focuses on the theme of forbidden love, The God of Small Things written by Arundhati

boundaries. The novel examines how conventional society seeks to destroy true love as this novel is
constantly connected to loss, death and sadness. This essay will explore the theme of forbidden love,
by discussing and analysing Ammu and Velutha's love that is forbidden because of the 'Love Laws'
in relation to the caste system which results in Velutha's death. It is evident that forbidden love
negatively impacts and influences other characters, such as Estha and Rahel, which results in Estha

Traditional Bridal Dowry Box as a Social Evil in Indian...
A satirical website created in 2011 calculates the amount of dowry women need in order to marry
the men of their choice. The website mocks India's social evil, and it exposes some of the unhealthy
factors families consider in order to arrive to "dowry rate." Some of the factors are caste, education
of the groom and even skin color. In India the custom of dowry is a very old tradition that originated
in the 13th or 14th century, when women were not given any share from paternal wealth and when
women were regarded as the property of either their fathers or their husbands. At that time, dowry
was giving women some pre–mortem inheritance and some economic security. Traditionally it was a

The passages suggest Roy's critique of the institution of dowry. Thus the excerpts bring value to the
whole book itself and help Roy pursue her goal of criticizing the Indian society through literature
and show how outdated the concept of a dowry is. These passages have also an importance because
they challenge the society in a way that dowry, a widely used tradition by the people, is depicted as
old–fashioned. Arundhati Roy depicts dowry as old–fashioned when she describes the hotel
"Heritage." Author says: "The furniture and knickknacks that came with the house were on display.
A reed umbrella, a wicker couch. A wooden dowry box. They were labeled with edifying placards
that said Traditional Kerala Umbrella and Traditional Bridal Dowry –box." (Roy 120) It is
interesting how the dowry box is on the display as in the museum in order to show well known but
old Indian tradition to the tourists and guests. Roy's description of dowry in these three different
situations lets the reader understand how Roy tries to progress dowry from being used in Ammu's
situation, to not being important as in Rahel's situation and later being an antique in the hotel.
Arundhati Roy uses different writing techniques in order to emphasize her criticism of the system
and voice her opinions as a political activist. There is no doubt that Roy cleverly uses diction and
flow in order to more clearly depict to the reader her vision of dowry– as an old–fashioned concept ,

Three Key Dimensions Of The Rogerian Self Concept
Self–Concept
Self–concept is explained in Roger's Theory of Personality (Roger, 20014). Roger's (2004) Theory
of Personality is intentional in character which means that the concept of self is an explanatory
construct. Roger (2004) also explains personality development as a parallel construct of experience
and the conceptual structure of the self. According to Roger (2004), people are healthy. His theory
of actualizing tendency is defined as the motivation in human's life to be developed in its fullest
maximum potential.
Self–concept refers to the awareness of an individual's identity as a person. It is how a person views
oneself terms of status and value. Reece (2015) defines self–concept as everyday ideas, information,
truths, and opinions that people have about themselves. A consistent self–concept is identified as a
product of experiences. It is the individual's overall perceptions of his or her abilities, as well as his
or her behavior and personality. The three key dimensions of the rogerian self–concept were studied
by Mcleod (2008) and these are self–image, self–esteem, and the ideal self. Self–image refers to
perceptions of the self with regard to appearance. Self–esteem refers to lovability and self–worth

Summary Of Roy Baumeister's Four Main Needs Of Meaning
5. List and discuss the details of Roy Baumeister's four main needs for meaning. Each individual
that is brought into this world has some sort of meaning in their lives, it's up to each individual to
find their identity and place in this world. Roy Baumeister is one of the greatest social psychologists
to explain the self–worth of each human. Throughout his career Baumeister has created different
variables on the definition of meaning. First, Baumeister explains that "purpose" is the first topic of
understanding meaning in one's life. The thought of one's person purpose is their objective goals
and/or the reason for which something exists or created. Basically, grasping an understanding for
your purpose in life can come at any age, and is hard to figure out at a young age. Everyone's
purpose in life is different, it's all about how you create your own path to achieve your goals. Values
is the second of the four main needs of meaning Baumeister preaches. The importance of values is
each individual's judgment of what's important in life. Values hold a lot of worth to an individual.
For example, one's values could be the belief of God in their life, being in a happy, functional
family, and that honesty and the truth is very important. Some people don't need a million dollars to
be content and happy in life, sticking and believing their values can go a long way in someone's
happiness. Third, is efficacy and the belief that one can make a difference. Going throughout

Politics In The God Of Small Things By Arundhati Roy
The God of Small Things may be seen through another perspective of a political story in the sense
that"politics intervenes in the basic social issues. One of the major social issues is centrally
concerned with the untouchables. Compulsions transcend the limits of party, ideology. These leaders
act as any, other leader would irrespective of party. In it, Roy engages with the political legacy of
communism in Kerala. Her satirical portrayal of E.M.S. Namboodiripad, the first Chief Minister and
his party followers created many controversies. The novel is about politics. Through its various
agencies, this politics exercises decisive influence over the lives of the people of Ayemenem.
Unlike other writers such as Mulk Raj Anand, Arundhati Roy presents politics as a very complex
force. It is operative at different levels. This politics begins with home. This is manipulated by
different people for different ends. The novel portrays the forces of power working in alliance in the
novel.
Apart from the political criticism, a humanistic reading of the text reveals the social bias around the
social politics, i.e. caste system. It bares the sad plight of the lower caste, even in the political
system supported by the proletarian values. What Roy implies is that the Marxist party in Kerala
worked from within the communal divides, never challenging them. Velutha is a member of the
party. Yet he does not get help from the party leader Comrade Pilliai. Pilliai's double standard

Theme Of Self Respect In Night Elie Wiesel
An individual's dignity wavers depending on the actions that events in his life call for, his perception
of responsibility. In the novel, Night Elie Wiesel develops the idea of a lack of self–respect as a
result of a forced passivity to the injustice that befell him during the Holocaust. To begin, his low
self–esteem is illustrated through the defeated tone used throughout the novel. Then, the dichotomy
between him and his father further demonstrates the lowly self–image. Lastly, the powerful
symbolism depicts Wiesel's pessimistic opinion.
Initially, the absence of self–respect caused by an individual's inability to counter injustice is
illustrated through the novel's disappointed tone. When his sickly father is denied sustenance Wiesel
states, "I gave him what was left of my soup. But my heart was heavy. I was aware I was doing it
grudgingly. . . I had not passed the test" (Wiesel 107). Here, his despondent voice provides obvious
insight on the conflict of his internal state. The author places "but" hurriedly after he mentions his,
seemingly, noble action; the fastidious syntax clears any modicum of respect that might appear as
the term negates the value of the notion implied previously. Wiesel does not consider himself
honorable for his actions because his intentions are not pure. The use of the phrases, "heart was
heavy", "grudgingly" and "had not passed" serve to further the negative connotation that radiates
from the passage, constituting the displeased tone. Also, the

Investigating the Way in Which Two Young Individuals Make Self–Descriptions
This study aims to investigate the way in which two young individuals make self–descriptions and
how these may change with age in the context of the findings of Morris Rosenberg's (1979).
Abstract
Rosenberg claimed that on the basis of his research younger individuals tended to describe
themselves more so on a physical basis whereas; older individuals used character and/or relationship
traits to describe the self.
Rosenberg argued that outer relatedness changed to inner, as one gets older. Rosenberg's findings
were collated into four categories: physical, character, relationships and inner.

Rosenberg's findings were categorised into four main groups: physical (descriptions of observable
features and physical achievements), character (descriptions of personal characteristics, traits or
behaviours towards others), relationship (descriptions of interpersonal traits or relationships with
others) and inner (descriptions of their private inner thoughts, secrets, emotions, dreams, wishes,
beliefs and attitudes).
Rosenberg's findings showed that the majority of young children focused on physical descriptors
and the older children focused on character descriptors.
The locus of self–knowledge is the individual's ability to develop a sense of self, independently
from others in particular, parents. He also deduced from his study of the locus of self–knowledge
that younger children were more likely to rely on their parents or peers as a reference point for
judging themselves. The older children were more likely to place the locus of self–knowledge within
themselves. This showed that there is a shift with age in the locus of self–knowledge from
significant others, particularly parents, to self. There was an element in the research that suggested
older children tended to refer to self–control, particularly in the area of showing emotions.
The purpose of this study is to focus on these two features of Rosenberg's research, contrasting self–

healthy. Even though a big part of your health is depended on your diet and what you eat, I still

I believe that not letting your kid do sports is wrong because it is normal and alright for a kid to get
hurt while playing because it can help them learn from it. Getting injured is bad for kids but that
kids should do competitive sports because kids can gain more self esteem, learn to work better with
others, and be more healthy. Self–esteem cannot be handed to kids; they have to earn it. Competition
is one way kids earn self–esteem. When you develop a talent and work hard for a result, it feels
great. When you fail and learn that can bounce back, you feel more confident in yourself because
you understand that you have resilience. Team sports teach kids how to work well with their
teammates. It also brings out the natural leader in them. Later in life when they are working in the
real world, the skills that they developed in working together comes into play. A big part of being
successful in life and work is being collaborative and working well with others. Researchers believe
playing high school sports, which usually involve regular practices and competitions, reduces a
child's chances of having a weight problem because of the strenuous and consistent workouts.
Therefore, study authors conclude, increasing a child's opportunity to play sports, even if they are
not gifted athletes, should be a priority, especially for teens and children entering middle school or

"6 Harsh Truths That Will Make You A Better Person" is a listicle written by David Wong, the chief
editor of the website "cracked.com". In this article, Wong takes an atypical side to the tradition self
help style of writing. He approaches the genre with an aggressive, volatile, angry tone to motivate
those who find themselves unmotivated. Wong divides his audience into two distinct groups. He
uses a scene from the famous 1992 movie Glengarry Glen Ross to his aid. This particular scene is
the Alec Baldwin, "If you want to work here, CLOSE!" speech that received massive critical praise.
Wong uses this scene to parallel the audience to those who worked under Alec Baldwin. Wong
directly then divides the audience into those who get things done in the face of adversity, and those
who fail to even step up to challenge. After making this distinction, Wong then targets those who fail
to step up to the challenge, and proceeds to portray his ideas on how to improve one's dire situation.
However, what Wong doesn't fully understand is that through this article, he truly alienates the
group that he is trying to assist in the first place. Wong's use of vulgar language, from the very first
line to the concluding paragraph, makes an informal attempt to grab an audience's attention. This
caustic style of informality effectively makes the audience cringe and not responsive to the article's

Pop Art And The Art
Throughout the vast history of art, there have been many art movements that stand out and
revolutionize the art world. However, one movement stands out in particular and it is known as Pop
Art. Pop Art was invented by a few younger artists by the name of Andy Warhol, Claes Oldenburg,
and Roy Lichtenstein. It was brought about in the 1960s and it helped define a new form of
American Realism. Its origin was sort of a lash out against Abstract Expressionism, which was a
style of painting. The point of pop art was to represent life as most Americans lived it. It pointed out
the simple things that Americans find themselves caught up in in everyday life. Pop Art represented
a world focused around popular culture, which is basically what is "hot" in America at the time. Pop
Art brought about the reality that America revolved around the culture of things like Wall Street
Finance and Madison Avenue Advertising. It sort of presented the thought that maybe Americans
weren't so hard to get through to or to understand. Pop Art revealed the pop culture in America and
made beautiful art in return. It helped turn the page in the art world that was leaving traditional
media, like painting, in the wind.
Although there were many great artists to work with Pop Art like Claes Oldenburg and Roy
Lichtenstein, one that particularly stands out is Andy Warhol. Born in August of 1928 in Pittsburgh,
Pennsylvania, Warhol was not among the most fortunate. Throughout his young life, Andy Warhol

Analysis Of Didion 's ' On Self Respect
In Didion's emotional yet dominant essay, "On Self– Respect," found in Slouching Towards
Bethlehem, she defines the true meaning of value to oneself, while indicating that reactions of
weakness and humiliation, based on the approval of bystanders, inhibits true acceptance. Her work
was published in 1968 by Farrar, Straus, and Giroux to an American magazine Vogue, in a time
when many intellectual Americans believed they were standing at the dawn of the Golden Age. The
emergence of The Human Potential Movement, in the 1960s, would authorize full use of personal

As a result of this rejection, Didion developed the definition of self–respect that we all accept, one
placing the opinion of others above her own. This personal and vulnerable memory included in the
essay marks a point in Didion's life where she encountered an unfair situation and began to struggle
with acceptance of self–respect. Here, Didion dismisses the preconceived notion that she always
held full self–respect for herself by labeling herself inferior to the sorority. Despite Didion's current
achievements for the popular Vanity Fair magazine, this personal anecdote shows failure, allowing
Didion to appeal to ethos and pathos. She does not intend for the audience to sympathize for her
shame, but to provide a personal example of the negative impact an ordinary individual can
encounter with the incorrect definition of self–respect. Didion also displays credibility by re–
evaluating her own level of self–respect to relate with the audience as they develop this
characteristic. Didion uses inclusive pronouns such as, "we" and "our," to once again highlight that
she is relatable to the audience. This allows for construction of Didion's character by displaying
credibility by appearance of standard individual, rather than a famous author and model. Didion's
use of ethos allows her to present

Nikee. Apple. Covergirl. Weight Watchers. Why Do All These
Nikee. Apple. Covergirl. Weight Watchers. Why do all these seemingly unrelated names sound
familiar? That answer is simple: advertising. Advertising, a prodigious business, is a way to market
a product or service to the public consumer through TV, internet, billboards, and other outlets.
However, this over exposure to unnecessary and unwanted propaganda brings about personal
struggles, since ads scream about the absolute desire for self impeccability while simultaneously
destroying the spirits of those who listen. This industry's image of "normalcy" often alters one's self

In addition, advertising feeds from mob mentality, convincing people a product will change their
lives by deeming it fashionable or sophisticated. It bypasses logical thinking to take control of how
people view themselves and their "need for esteem. People want and need to be respected and we
need to feel good about ourselves. And this is where much advertising lives, often because we are
selling products that people really do not need. L'Oreal's 'Because you're worth it' is the perfect
example" (Madigan 83). For this reason, expectations of a person are manipulated to fit the wants of
the industry to sell products. These people are affected since they feel as if they have no choice in
what to wear, how their body should appear to others, and which brands they buy. It all comes down
to the need to be apart of something bigger, instead of sticking out from the crowd.

Do Our Kids Get Off Too Easy? By Alfie Kohn
In the article "Do Our Kids Get Off Too Easy?", author Alfie Kohn argues that treating kids
leniently does not impact their future negatively because it can give them unconditional self–esteem.
He believes that when children "never ... receive something desirable ... unless they've done enough
to merit it" (Kohn) it can create "a fragile, contingent sense of self" (Kohn). Kohn compares this
with the arguments of the opposing side to reveal how they have no evidence on how scolding kids'

The praise and encouragement the children receive will instill a sense of self–worth in them. When
parents "prais[e] children for their effort, ... [it] is... effective... motivating them" (Hammond). The

success. The motivation that their parents provide can be the foundation for self–motivation in the
future, which creates more drive to continue with a challenging task. They will be given
unconditional self–esteem which is essential in overcoming whatever failure they may encounter,
whether it be in school or in social circumstances. Furthermore, the praise the children receive will
not blind them from their faults and failures. Will children "who [have] received a trinket after
losing a contest... [believe] that [they] ... won" (Kohn)? Children have the ability of recognising
their own defeat, and the defeat in itself will already put the child down, so a scolding parent will
not help the child's mindset. Instead, when children are encouraged after a defeat and are provided
with a positive environment, they will recognise their loss and will become stronger because of it. If

A Lack Of Dignity By Ernest J. Gaines
A lack of dignity was shown throughout A Lesson Before Dying in the characters of Grant,
Jefferson, Miss Emma, Tante Lou, and Vivian. All of these characters in the novel struggled with
their lack of human morals which reflected on their impertinent actions towards themselves and
among others. The story takes place in the1940's small Cajun town of Bayonne, Louisiana. In this
time period there was an abundance of racial segregation between african american people and a
strong bias towards white people. This shouldn't be an excuse or reason of why there was very little
dignity throughout the novel. Furthermore, Ernest J. Gaines gives us plenty of examples of how
these characters showed this lack of dignity among themselves and others. Grant Wiggins, a school
teacher, is the most educated man in the community. He 's been to the university and came back
home to teach at the same school that he went to growing up as a child. This is an achievement of
itself , and most of the people in his community show him lots of respect for taking on this ruthless
job. Unfortunately, his lack of dignity is shown by him seeing his work at the school as being
useless or unworthy. His perspective towards his own community is that nothing ever changes and
that all of these years of slavery had brought his people 's advancement to a sudden stop. Because of
this feeling Grant shows several times in the novel that he wants to leave town and start a new life
somewhere else. He says in the novel,

part of this test. Especially, emotional competency and self–motivation . Because of my weakness on
self–esteem, I probably will meet some problem in my future especially when I join in a workplace
such as an organization or a company. Firstly I am not good at emotional competency, that's means I
will have difficulty on make expression in a work team so that my team members won't know my

weakness at self–motivation, this means I cannot encourage myself when I meet difficulties in team

from the issue rather than try to solve the difficulty. I may choose to quit the team or even leave the

The Manifestations Of Marxism In The God Of Small Things

  • 1. The Manifestations of Marxism in The God of Small Things Arundhati Roy's novel The God of Small Things presents the reader with the realities of Marxism. Roy gives the reader an impression of three possible manifestations of the ideology, rather than presenting a biased reading for or against Marxism. Through Roy's novel the reader comes to understand Marxism as it appears through Velutha, the oppressed worker, Chacko the Marxist–in– name only, and Comrade Pillai, the corrupt politician. Comrade Pillai epitomizes the idea of a corrupt politician. During his first scene in the novel, Roy describes him as "walking through the world like a chameleon. Never revealing himself, never appearing not to. Emerging through chaos unscathed." (Roy 15) Furthermore, Comrade Pillai champions himself as an ally of the oppressed and common people, but it is in reality a façade. Comrade Pillai is in reality a champion only for his own interests. An example of Comrade's Pillai's selfish corruption is the way that he watches the workers of Paradise Pickles and Preserves: Comrade Pillai had begun to watch the goings–on at Paradise Pickles with the keenness of a substitute at a soccer match. To bring in a new labor union, however small, in what he hoped to be his future constituency would be an excellent beginning for a journey to the Legislative Assembly. (Roy 114) Roy uses the phrase "keenness of a substitute at a soccer match" to describe Comrade Pillai's attitude toward the workers of Paradise Pickles and Preserves. This phrase seems to suggest ... In Irmgard Keun's Intimacy As A Commodity Intimacy as a Commodity: Irmgard Keun's Doris and Prostitution as a Symbol of Modernity In Irmgard Keun's 1932 novel The Artificial Silk Girl, Doris, an independent–minded and flirtatious young woman, chronicles her search for stardom and resulting chaos as she attempts to get by in the tumultuous sociopolitical scene of 1930's Berlin. Encouraged by her naive dream of reaching stardom, an ideal that she feels will protect her from the ridicule, judgment and manipulation that she has learned to expect from others, Doris walks a precarious line between the lofty bourgeois lifestyle of the effortless star she aspires to be and a life of utter desperate prostitution, where she is forced to commodify her body and flirtatious spirit to supply her ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... With the commodification of both material goods and human beings that comes hand in hand with modernity and urbanization, prostitution became a widespread practice for young women in search of independence outside of a world of marriage or "assembly–line factories" and "mechanized offices with typewriters, filing cabinets, and switchboards" (Smith). Like Doris, these women hoped for a more exciting life that did not depend upon working for a boss you "have to hate" because they can "dismiss you" (Keun 161). To some, such as Austrian writer Vicki Baum, prostitution was regarded as an honest way of maintaining independence from the patriarchal institution of marriage that opened opportunities for young women to make a life for themselves, paved by sexual liberation. However, many Germans, especially those outside of Berlin, whose experiences with prostitution consisted only of horror stories of thousands of scantily clad young women roaming the previously dignified streets of their capital, feared that prostitution marked the decline of their ... Folashade Oloniyo Abstract In this essay, the characteristics of a counsellor and a friend will be expanded upon in order to gain a greater knowledge for deciphering the two. We all have been in situations where we hit a brick wall in our life and are unsure of the next step or the next move to make. We have close friends to whom we can turn and reach out to, but in some situations, are they really our best option for help? Friends are needed for support on many levels, but on others, professional reinforcement may be of greater good. With that said, I challenge you the reader and ask the questions: What is counselling? How does a counsellor ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... I told her that as long as she keeps the door to her life open, he will continue to come back and let himself in. she says its hard, that she's afraid to let him go and stand alone. My question to her was, 'are you happy now? He sleeps with you when he needs a fix, but lives with another woman and their child. You can't tell me that you're happy. It may hurt for a while, but trust me; you'll thank God that you did it in the end. I'm sorry about your loss, and please don't get upset when I say this, but I do believe everything happens for a reason. You should deem this your second chance.' I could feel she didn't like my delivery, but I also felt that I was heard. All I can do is hope and pray that my words solidify in the back of her mind.'' As a counsellor, you have an obligation to remain objective and non–judgmental at whatever is said to you by your client. I can recall feeling slightly judgmental; I thought to myself that my client/friend was making completely unhealthy and unwise decisions. Her actions were so silly and desperate and completely opposite to how I would have acted. I attempted to transfer my views as diplomatically as possible, trying not to cause a wall of defense to be built. In an actual client and counsellor setting, this type of thinking definitely defies objectivity standpoints that counsellors should ensue. Objectivity is ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 7. Theme Of Isolation In Frankenstein The film opens on the main character Victor Van Dort, the son of recently wealthy aristocrats, being forced to Victoria, daughter to a family of even wealthier aristocrats. (Russell) The Van Dorts are looking to raise their status in society through the marriage to the aristocrats, and the Everglots are hoping to further bury their secret bankruptcy and get their hands on the money they, wrongly, assume Victor's family has. At the very beginning, Victor is shown to be a very reserved, shy character when he is shown alone in his room drawing a butterfly while his parents sing excitedly about the upcoming wedding. This also emphasizes the drastic differing opinions about the wedding, and how Victor obviously dreads it. "This introduces the classic character of the old foolish woman through Victor's mother and gives the audience a silent look into the character of Victor. He is isolated at the beginning by his own will." (Drouillard). Isolated protagonists are used often in Gothic fiction as seen in another Victor, this one Frankenstein, who hides himself away to focus on work. Before the wedding, it's very obvious that Victor is nervous, and the parents are just as worried that he will not perform correctly at the ceremony. As he rehearses in the woods, Victor manages to properly say his vows, puts the wedding ring on a hand–like branch, and everything goes smoothly. Of course, in a fantasy, nothing truly goes as planned and the branch–like hand is revealed to be a real hand. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 9. Personal Essay : Self Espect And Self-Respect According to Merriam–Webster, self–respect is a proper respect for oneself as a human being. I do not call it self–respect when I constantly beat myself down with words. One must put themselves in a position of self–respect with self–acceptance, self–worth and self–conceit. Prior to this time in my life, I would continuously bully myself with malicious words. This hurtful content would come from my own self or others. I had a visual idea of what I wanted myself to be. At the time, self–respect did not look like beautiful flowers to me. On the inside, bruises covered my body, which looked more like dead flowers living in me. Wicked words began eating up my body. Surrounding myself with others who do not take me for granted, or who do not kill me with evil words became a life choice I had to make for the better. Every individual needs to have the courage to stand up for himself or herself and by knowing his or her own worth. Self–worth looks like a pearl; a beautiful, smooth pearl that reveals itself, out of horror and pressure. I am self–worth. Having self–respect for myself shows that I see myself as self–conceit. Self–conceit in my terms means that I show pride in everything I have and will accomplish. Basically I will be talking about the usage of language, the writing style, of blending language and culture and my analysis of it in the text – The God of Small Things by Arundhati Roy. The story of the Indian English novel is really the story of a changing India. There was a time when education was a rare opportunity and speaking English was unnecessary. The stories were already there– in the myths, in the folklore and the umpteen languages and cultures that gossiped, conversed, laughed and cried all over the subcontinent. India has always been a land of stories, the demarcation between ritual and reality being very narrow. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The God of Small Things is not written in a sequential narrative style in which events unfold chronologically. Instead, the novel is a patchwork of flashbacks and lengthy sidetracks that weave together to tell the story of the Kochamma family. The main events of the novel are traced back through the complex history of their causes, and memories are revealed as they relate to each other thematically and as they might appear in Rahel's mind, the main protagonist of the story. Although the narrative voice is omniscient, or all–knowing, it is loosely grounded in Rahel's perspective, and all of the episodes of the novel progress towards the key moments in Rahel's life. This non– sequential narrative style, which determines the form of the novel, is an extremely useful authorial tool. It allows Roy a great deal of flexibility as she chooses which themes and events are most important to pursue. The author is able to structure her book so as to build up to the ideas and events at the root of the Kochamma family's experience. One of the first elements of Roy's writing that readers confront as they begin this novel is her creative vocabulary – creative in the sense that she makes up new words. In the first pages, for ... Sporting events and news are available to the public twenty–four hours a day on television and radio: sports is an enormous industry. The outstanding popularity of the sports industry has greatly affected youth sports organizations. The majority of these coaches volunteer for programs organized by the community, religious organizations, and recreational facilities. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... . There are a huge number of children playing sports, but due to burnout, stress, psychological trauma, and lowered self–esteem as many as seventy–three percent quit sports by the age of thirteen. Rick Wolff, a former professional baseball player and coach, claims there are several factors contributing to this phenomenon such as: parents and coaches putting excessive pressure on children, specialization in one sport, over competitiveness, anxiety and loss of interest. This lack of interest may stem from the fact that they are cut from a team, injured, or receive little playing time. Another reason for high dropout rates is the structure of the programs. The sports programs are set up by adults, run by adults, and maintained by adults with a precise date and time. Spontaneous play and creativity are taken out of the equation. Coaches are choosing who plays and who doesn't in an effort to win. A study found that 90% of all children would rather be on a losing team if they got to play. Alfie Kohn, author of "No Contest", claims that competition will lead to the downfall of sports. "The trouble with a hyper competitive culture like ours is that we not only leave the mechanism intact but we create a network of reinforcement for winning at any cost. • 17. Personal Narrative: My Experience Of Reading And Writing Learning anything in school was very hard for me growing up because I always felt discouraged when there were people learning the curriculum faster than I did or making better grades, but reading and writing was something that I always wasn't discouraged with. I learned how to read and write from experiences and creativity that I had or that was shown to me. My family had a lot of issues and a lot of drama would happen that my brother and I caught in the middle of it so I found a way out of it. I learned to read all from one boring afternoon at my Dad's house. It was me and my brother in a house where you can't do anything because the parents are jerks. Luckily my Dad had been given some comic books by his friend and he gave them too us. Immediately we ran straight too those godly books, prayed to the god know as Stan Lee for making these comic books. We were going through them looking for which one too read. I found the one to read it was Marvel Zombies and the pictures were amazing, but I couldn't make out the words well most of them. I decided to write some of the words in a little personal dictionary and write the definitions even cuss words. This made me realize their message of some of their messages or references and it opened a world of letters for me. My brother and I stayed up all night organizing and reading them in chronological order when all of a sudden, my brother stated freaking out. • 19. The Met Essay I joined the class for the trip to the "Big Apple" on the eve of Halloween. We departed from a campus parking lot early Saturday morning. Our destination was the Metropolitan Museum of Art, which is located at 82nd Street and Fifth Avenue. I had never been to "the Met" before and I was very impressed. I wandered throughout the museum going from gallery to gallery until I was able to find the two paintings that interested me the most. The first painting to catch my eye was the Virgin and Child with Saint Anne, which was painted by Albrecht Durer around 1519. The German artist lived from 1471 to 1528 and is considered by many the greatest German Renaissance artist of them all. Albrecht Durer used an oil medium on a wooden support to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The artist's palette had a fairly wide range of colors when painting this artwork. The use of many different colors makes this a polychromatic work of art. He used a few warm colors along with a lot of black and white. Most of the areas of this painting that are painted with warm colors are low in saturation. This is shown in the clothing of the woman holding the child. It seems the source of light comes from the top left hand corner of the painting. The light source causes the three figures to have a high intensity level. This is shown on the child's face, which is not only the focal point of this picture but also the highlight. Durer also used chiaroscuro to show the depth in the painting. The shadow on the woman with the child makes the painting appear to be three–dimensional. After seeing how representational a painting can be I decided to take a look at the opposite end of the spectrum. The other painting I chose is titled Stepping Out. Roy Lichtenstein did this painting in 1978. He worked as a commercial artist as well as a graphic designer before becoming popular as a "Pop Artist." Lichtenstein used a similar medium, which was oil and magna, but chose to paint his picture on canvas instead of wood. While Stepping Out is still a portrait it is unlike Durer `s work in that it is an abstract artwork. The male form in the painting is fairly realistic while the female form is very surreal. In the poem Unemployment, written by Fatimah Asghar, the author adds many hidden messages and symbols in the poems for the readers to uncover, and in a lot of times it tends to be difficult. Many poets will use their personal experiences to convey the message across to the audience. It is still difficult for readers to understand the poem right away, as many poetry are needed to be reread many times to understand the information that the poet is trying to get to the reader. Asghar justifies that people should love the skin they are born with instead of changing themselves to look better physically. What defines a person isn't what's on the outside but within. Asghar wants women to love themselves for what they have and not the superficial aspects of life. The definition of beauty is complex, everyone has their own definition of what beauty holds. There are advertisements on how a woman should look and many follow onto those beliefs. • 23. Thomas Reid versus Roy Baumeister Essay The evolution of mankind has seem to have established a complex form of control that is directly connected to popular conceptions of free will. Highly adaptive aspects, designated by self–control and the idea of rational choice are crucial to successfully functioning within a given culture or community. The processes that conceive such forms of free will could be biologically costly and thus used only on occasion. Thus most individuals will tend to be only somewhat not completely rational, disciplined and noble. This is the conclusion of Roy Baumeister, leader in the field of psychology from Florida State University. Baumeister strongly believes that as a result of biological processes willpower is no more than a limited resource. On the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In addition, Baumeister concluded that ego depletion or willpower depletion can occur from making simple decisions. This is because according to Baumeister, the same type of energy used for making decisions is also used for self–control. Think of willpower as a gas tank that must supply both self– control as well decision making processes. Consequently, this can lead to people avoiding to make decisions, or making poorer decisions as a result. However, Baumeister claims that self–control with regular use can be improved. Engaging in a number of different situations or certain activities that demand good self–control can help to improve an individual's self–control ability. Truly, Baumeister's assessments seem to suggest that over the evolution of mankind an expensive biological process was created in order to control actions. This process involves using a large amount of an individual's caloric diet to power psychological processes. These processes according to Baumeister is what has enabled people to behave in ways that have been advantageous. On the other hand, Thomas Reid does not believe free will to be a limited resource. Rather, Reid believes more or less that free will is limitless. Reid acknowledges as metaphysical libertarian that free will is a concrete thing and that not having the ability of free will is not possible, that the existence of a nonphysical agent such as a ... Most adults assume that millennials are using social media as a way to avoid face to face conversations and as a waste of time. However, multiple researchers have studied the importance of social media and its impact on people. It has been found that social media can be used as a creative outlet, way to socialize, learning tool, political outlet, and way to connect with others. Tara C. The world of science consistently generates new studies in various fields, yielding results that can revolutionize society and shine light on the world we know so very little about. However, it is easy to get lost in specific studies and view each one as its own, independent discovery. And while each experiment provides an important look into the complexities of this world, science is an amalgamation of many discoveries strung together in complex ways. This way, the merits of each study can interrelate in order to further understand something else. In the realm of positive psychology, it is important that a number of different scientific discoveries work together to explain an overarching topic. For example, two studies that are interrelated are Martin Seligman's exploration of learned helplessness, and Roy Baumeister's study on willpower depletion. Both are important in their own rights, but by comparing both Seligman and Baumeister's experiments, scientists can discuss the overarching concept of willpower as a depletable resource. Psychologist Martin Seligman conducted an experiment that aimed to understand more about classical conditioning. In his study, he rang a bell and lightly shocked a dog. Eventually, if the dog heard the bell, it would react to the shock before it even happened. This was all good, it was a great example of classical conditioning, but the truly interesting part of the study came later. Seligman constructed a box with a small wall in the middle. ... Some readers claim this is not possible because the invaders are portrayed as sympathetic characters but I refuse to agree with this argument. Throughout the book, I saw evidence to support the fact that the novel is successful in praising democracy and free choice such as the inability for the invaders to take away the townspeople's personal actions, the importance of the individual, an idea upon which democracy is founded but also the pain that occurs when freedom is taken away. She proved that freedom, limited as it was, still existed when she killed Lieutenant Tonder, revealing that free choice was successfully shown. The popular novel by John Steinbeck is successful in praising the ideals of democracy and free choice because it reveals the importance of the individual, an idea upon which democracy is formed. Alex Morden states, "I'm not sorry. He told me to go to work – me, a free man! I used to be alderman. He said I had to work." (p 53) Alex was the man who sparked the fire within the townspeople's hearts. His freedom as an individual was taken away and because of this he killed Captain Bentick, providing him with a death sentence. When Alex died, a rebellion began to grow, his death the catalyst to regain the townspeople's freedom. As Alex is a symbol to the rebellion, the individual is the symbol for democracy. Without freedom, you have no satisfaction that a democracy grants. When the invaders no longer ran under the pretense of democracy and killed Alex, the rebellion began to grow into a raging fight for freedom, proving that the ideal of democracy is successful. Rumour and gossip is that which is uncertain to be true about someone that is spread around to everyone else. In To Kill a Mockingbird, Lee proves this through characters Jem and Scout's idea of Boo Radley: "inside the house lived a malevolent phantom....people said he went out when the moon was down, and peeped in windows. When people's azaleas froze in the cold snap, it was because he had breathed on them"(10). This demonstrates how gossip and rumour can be twisted up about someone so much, that the person becomes this weird creep in the eyes of these children. Also, Atticus (Jem and Scouts father) is the lawyer for a black man accused of rape in a trial, which causes people around the town they live in–Maycomb– to gossip and spread rumours of how Atticus is a "Nigger Lover" (Lee 110). Not only does this damage his reputation, but it also taunts there children who are battered by people about it, and even though in the beginning scout didn't know what it meant, people said it in such a negative way she new it was untrue about her father. Everywhere we look, we come across a moral boundary that we at least think we should not cross, but cross nonetheless. "As ye sow, ye shall reap" is a familiar proverb we have all heard at one point in our lives (Roy 31). But is it true? Do we really get what we deserve? Themes in "Blue Velvet" Exploring the Dark Side: Contrasting Themes in "Blue Velvet" The subconscious psyche is one of the most fascinating and almost completely inexplicable aspects of human behavior. Even more intriguing than merely the subconscious is the notion of a darker, more repressed side that many individuals refuse to acknowledge exists within them. In David Lynch's film "Blue Velvet," the director attempts to explore the psyche of a young man named Jeffrey Beaumont, most notably the clash between his darker side and "good" side for the first time in his life. Using themes that sharply contrast one another, Lynch provides insight into the character of Jeffrey and the struggle that he is faced with. Jeffrey is in a transitional period of his life, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Lynch chooses to use such stark contrast in an effort to establish not only the differences in one's perception, but of the psyche as well. The opening sequence is used by Lynch as a metaphor for Jeffrey's state of mind throughout the entire film, as Jeffrey realizes he has a dark side yet is trying (most of the time) to suppress it. The town of Lumberton, like Jeffrey, is an idealized version of what America and Americans should be like and yet, much like Jeffrey's mind, it is full of dark secrets and contradictions. One aspect of Jeffrey's psyche being explored is the notion of his battle between innocent love for a young girl and the animalistic lust he possesses for an older, more mature woman. The "good" or innocent side of Jeffrey is personified in the character of Sandy. Sandy is often depicted wearing light colors, with blue eyes and perfectly brushed blonde hair. When Sandy is first introduced into the film, she enters through utter darkness, stepping out of the shadows and into the light in a medium shot. Lynch follows this up with a long reverse tracking two shot in which Jeffrey and Sandy make small talk and innocently flirt with one another. Dorothy's introduction into the film, however, is quite different. The film first truly introduces the audience and Jeffrey to Dorothy with a subjective shot from her closet. • 43. The Psychology Of Self Esteem Furthermore, the effects of these awards go far beyond sports and contests. Being awarded at such a young age for just about anything is highly misleading of how the real world works. Many young Americans have developed a sense of entitlement, expecting to gain more in return for less effort. Per a study done by Bernard Goldberg approximately one out of every three college students believes they deserve a B just for attending their courses. This sense of privilege is an almost contagious mind–set that has only gotten worse. But many ask how exactly the idea that one should be rewarded for almost anything began? The self–esteem movement was developed in 1969 after Nathaniel Branden wrote "The Psychology of Self–Esteem." The idea Branden proposed was that self–esteem is essential to overall success in life. This caused many parents to believe that, if they could start by increasing their children's self– esteem they would become more successful in the future. This brought up ideas intended to help children gain more confidence and self–worth. For example, all children should receive participation awards so that no child would feel bad for not winning. Consequently, studies have found that children's self–image may be negatively impacted by the ideas behind participation trophies and awards. Yet, parents still encourage rewards be given to all children. There seem to be two obvious reasons why parents want their children to receive trophies. One, they are terrified of how ... The website mocks India's social evil, and it exposes some of the unhealthy factors families consider in order to arrive to "dowry rate." Some of the factors are caste, education of the groom and even skin color. In India the custom of dowry is a very old tradition that originated in the 13th or 14th century, when women were not given any share from paternal wealth and when women were regarded as the property of either their fathers or their husbands. At that time, dowry was giving women some pre–mortem inheritance and some economic security. Traditionally it was a Stridhanam – daughter's wedding settlement, but in 20th ... Thus the excerpts bring value to the whole book itself and help Roy pursue her goal of criticizing the Indian society through literature and show how outdated the concept of a dowry is. These passages have also an importance because they challenge the society in a way that dowry, a widely used tradition by the people, is depicted as old–fashioned. Arundhati Roy depicts dowry as old–fashioned when she describes the hotel "Heritage." Author says: "The furniture and knickknacks that came with the house were on display. A reed umbrella, a wicker couch. A wooden dowry box. They were labeled with edifying placards that said Traditional Kerala Umbrella and Traditional Bridal Dowry –box." Roger's (2004) Theory of Personality is intentional in character which means that the concept of self is an explanatory construct. Roger (2004) also explains personality development as a parallel construct of experience and the conceptual structure of the self. According to Roger (2004), people are healthy. His theory of actualizing tendency is defined as the motivation in human's life to be developed in its fullest maximum potential. Self–concept refers to the awareness of an individual's identity as a person. It is how a person views oneself terms of status and value. Each individual that is brought into this world has some sort of meaning in their lives, it's up to each individual to find their identity and place in this world. Roy Baumeister is one of the greatest social psychologists to explain the self–worth of each human. Throughout his career Baumeister has created different variables on the definition of meaning. First, Baumeister explains that "purpose" is the first topic of understanding meaning in one's life. The thought of one's person purpose is their objective goals and/or the reason for which something exists or created. Basically, grasping an understanding for your purpose in life can come at any age, and is hard to figure out at a young age. Everyone's purpose in life is different, it's all about how you create your own path to achieve your goals. Values is the second of the four main needs of meaning Baumeister preaches. The importance of values is each individual's judgment of what's important in life. Values hold a lot of worth to an individual. For example, one's values could be the belief of God in their life, being in a happy, functional family, and that honesty and the truth is very important. Some people don't need a million dollars to be content and happy in life, sticking and believing their values can go a long way in someone's happiness. Politics In The God Of Small Things By Arundhati Roy The God of Small Things may be seen through another perspective of a political story in the sense that"politics intervenes in the basic social issues. One of the major social issues is centrally concerned with the untouchables. Compulsions transcend the limits of party, ideology. These leaders act as any, other leader would irrespective of party. In it, Roy engages with the political legacy of communism in Kerala. Her satirical portrayal of E.M.S. Namboodiripad, the first Chief Minister and his party followers created many controversies. The novel is about politics. Through its various agencies, this politics exercises decisive influence over the lives of the people of Ayemenem. Unlike other writers such as Mulk Raj Anand, Arundhati Roy presents politics as a very complex force. It is operative at different levels. This politics begins with home. This is manipulated by different people for different ends. The novel portrays the forces of power working in alliance in the novel. Apart from the political criticism, a humanistic reading of the text reveals the social bias around the social politics, i.e. caste system. It bares the sad plight of the lower caste, even in the political system supported by the proletarian values. What Roy implies is that the Marxist party in Kerala worked from within the communal divides, never challenging them. Velutha is a member of the party. • 57. Theme Of Self Respect In Night Elie Wiesel An individual's dignity wavers depending on the actions that events in his life call for, his perception of responsibility. In the novel, Night Elie Wiesel develops the idea of a lack of self–respect as a result of a forced passivity to the injustice that befell him during the Holocaust. To begin, his low self–esteem is illustrated through the defeated tone used throughout the novel. Then, the dichotomy between him and his father further demonstrates the lowly self–image. Lastly, the powerful symbolism depicts Wiesel's pessimistic opinion. Initially, the absence of self–respect caused by an individual's inability to counter injustice is illustrated through the novel's disappointed tone. When his sickly father is denied sustenance Wiesel states, "I gave him what was left of my soup. But my heart was heavy. I was aware I was doing it grudgingly. . . I had not passed the test" (Wiesel 107). Here, his despondent voice provides obvious insight on the conflict of his internal state. The author places "but" hurriedly after he mentions his, seemingly, noble action; the fastidious syntax clears any modicum of respect that might appear as the term negates the value of the notion implied previously. Wiesel does not consider himself honorable for his actions because his intentions are not pure. The use of the phrases, "heart was heavy", "grudgingly" and "had not passed" serve to further the negative connotation that radiates from the passage, constituting the displeased tone. Also, the ... Investigating the Way in Which Two Young Individuals Make Self–Descriptions This study aims to investigate the way in which two young individuals make self–descriptions and how these may change with age in the context of the findings of Morris Rosenberg's (1979). Abstract Rosenberg claimed that on the basis of his research younger individuals tended to describe themselves more so on a physical basis whereas; older individuals used character and/or relationship traits to describe the self. Rosenberg argued that outer relatedness changed to inner, as one gets older. Rosenberg's findings were collated into four categories: physical, character, relationships and inner. Rosenberg also ... Rosenberg's findings were categorised into four main groups: physical (descriptions of observable features and physical achievements), character (descriptions of personal characteristics, traits or behaviours towards others), relationship (descriptions of interpersonal traits or relationships with others) and inner (descriptions of their private inner thoughts, secrets, emotions, dreams, wishes, beliefs and attitudes). Rosenberg's findings showed that the majority of young children focused on physical descriptors and the older children focused on character descriptors. The locus of self–knowledge is the individual's ability to develop a sense of self, independently from others in particular, parents. He also deduced from his study of the locus of self–knowledge that younger children were more likely to rely on their parents or peers as a reference point for judging themselves. The older children were more likely to place the locus of self–knowledge within themselves. This showed that there is a shift with age in the locus of self–knowledge from significant others, particularly parents, to self. There was an element in the research that suggested older children tended to refer to self–control, particularly in the area of showing emotions. The purpose of this study is to focus on these two features of Rosenberg's research, contrasting self– descriptors in

Self–esteem cannot be handed to kids; they have to earn it. Competition is one way kids earn self–esteem. When you develop a talent and work hard for a result, it feels great. "6 Harsh Truths That Will Make You A Better Person" is a listicle written by David Wong, the chief editor of the website "cracked.com". In this article, Wong takes an atypical side to the tradition self help style of writing. He approaches the genre with an aggressive, volatile, angry tone to motivate those who find themselves unmotivated. Wong divides his audience into two distinct groups. He uses a scene from the famous 1992 movie Glengarry Glen Ross to his aid. This particular scene is the Alec Baldwin, "If you want to work here, CLOSE!" speech that received massive critical praise. Wong uses this scene to parallel the audience to those who worked under Alec Baldwin. Wong directly then divides the audience into those who get things done in the face of adversity, and those who fail to even step up to challenge. After making this distinction, Wong then targets those who fail to step up to the challenge, and proceeds to portray his ideas on how to improve one's dire situation. However, what Wong doesn't fully understand is that through this article, he truly alienates the group that he is trying to assist in the first place. Wong's use of vulgar language, from the very first line to the concluding paragraph, makes an informal attempt to grab an audience's attention. This caustic style of informality effectively makes the audience cringe and not responsive to the article's message. Wong also uses different forms of media, ranging from pictures and videos to help assist his ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 66. Pop Art And The Art Throughout the vast history of art, there have been many art movements that stand out and revolutionize the art world. However, one movement stands out in particular and it is known as Pop Art. Pop Art was invented by a few younger artists by the name of Andy Warhol, Claes Oldenburg, and Roy Lichtenstein. It was brought about in the 1960s and it helped define a new form of American Realism. Its origin was sort of a lash out against Abstract Expressionism, which was a style of painting. The point of pop art was to represent life as most Americans lived it. It pointed out the simple things that Americans find themselves caught up in in everyday life. Pop Art represented a world focused around popular culture, which is basically what is "hot" in America at the time. Pop Art brought about the reality that America revolved around the culture of things like Wall Street Finance and Madison Avenue Advertising. It sort of presented the thought that maybe Americans weren't so hard to get through to or to understand. Pop Art revealed the pop culture in America and made beautiful art in return. It helped turn the page in the art world that was leaving traditional media, like painting, in the wind. Although there were many great artists to work with Pop Art like Claes Oldenburg and Roy Lichtenstein, one that particularly stands out is Andy Warhol. Analysis Of Didion 's ' On Self Respect In Didion's emotional yet dominant essay, "On Self– Respect," found in Slouching Towards Bethlehem, she defines the true meaning of value to oneself, while indicating that reactions of weakness and humiliation, based on the approval of bystanders, inhibits true acceptance. Her work was published in 1968 by Farrar, Straus, and Giroux to an American magazine Vogue, in a time when many intellectual Americans believed they were standing at the dawn of the Golden Age. The emergence of The Human Potential Movement, in the 1960s, would authorize full use of personal capacities, leading to self–actualization and fulfillment of pleasure. As a result of this rejection, Didion developed the definition of self–respect that we all accept, one placing the opinion of others above her own. This personal and vulnerable memory included in the essay marks a point in Didion's life where she encountered an unfair situation and began to struggle with acceptance of self–respect. Here, Didion dismisses the preconceived notion that she always held full self–respect for herself by labeling herself inferior to the sorority. Despite Didion's current achievements for the popular Vanity Fair magazine, this personal anecdote shows failure, allowing Didion to appeal to ethos and pathos. She does not intend for the audience to sympathize for her shame, but to provide a personal example of the negative impact an ordinary individual can encounter with the incorrect definition of self–respect. Didion also displays credibility by re– evaluating her own level of self–respect to relate with the audience as they develop this characteristic. Didion uses inclusive pronouns such as, "we" and "our," to once again highlight that she is relatable to the audience. This allows for construction of Didion's character by displaying credibility by appearance of standard individual, rather than a famous author and model. That answer is simple: advertising. Advertising, a prodigious business, is a way to market a product or service to the public consumer through TV, internet, billboards, and other outlets. However, this over exposure to unnecessary and unwanted propaganda brings about personal struggles, since ads scream about the absolute desire for self impeccability while simultaneously destroying the spirits of those who listen. This industry's image of "normalcy" often alters one's self image. Although many see the benefits of consumer marketing, the industry's depiction of idealized perfection reveals that manipulating people through advertisements ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In addition, advertising feeds from mob mentality, convincing people a product will change their lives by deeming it fashionable or sophisticated. It bypasses logical thinking to take control of how people view themselves and their "need for esteem. People want and need to be respected and we need to feel good about ourselves. And this is where much advertising lives, often because we are selling products that people really do not need. L'Oreal's 'Because you're worth it' is the perfect example" (Madigan 83). For this reason, expectations of a person are manipulated to fit the wants of the industry to sell products. These people are affected since they feel as if they have no choice in what to wear, how their body should appear to others, and which brands they buy. It all comes down to the need to be apart of something bigger, instead of sticking out from the crowd. EXAMPLE Society's deeply ingrained standards for women created by the media demonstrate the corruption of self image as seen through ads from the 1950s that feed off of insecurities. History demonstrates the obsession with perfection by showing how women were viewed before and after advertising influence, "Men wouldn 't look at me when I was skinny... Since I've gained 10 pounds, I have all the dates I want" (Lewis). Ads such as this swayed women from the 1950s to 1960s to physically appear in a ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

By Alfie Kohn In the article "Do Our Kids Get Off Too Easy?", author Alfie Kohn argues that treating kids leniently does not impact their future negatively because it can give them unconditional self–esteem. He believes that when children "never ... receive something desirable ... unless they've done enough to merit it" (Kohn) it can create "a fragile, contingent sense of self" (Kohn). Kohn compares this with the arguments of the opposing side to reveal how they have no evidence on how scolding kids' losses will help them in the future. He notices that when children only receive awards for when they behave well, "every human interaction... is regarded as a kind of transaction" (Kohn). The praise and encouragement the children receive will instill a sense of self–worth in them. When parents "prais[e] children for their effort, ... [it] is... effective... motivating them" (Hammond). The praise can help children realize that their effort is valuable and that with the effort can come possible success. The motivation that their parents provide can be the foundation for self–motivation in the future, which creates more drive to continue with a challenging task. They will be given unconditional self–esteem which is essential in overcoming whatever failure they may encounter, whether it be in school or in social circumstances. Furthermore, the praise the children receive will not blind them from their faults and failures. Will children "who [have] received a trinket after losing a contest... [believe] that [they] ... won" (Kohn)? Children have the ability of recognising their own defeat, and the defeat in itself will already put the child down, so a scolding parent will not help the child's mindset. • 76. A Lack Of Dignity By Ernest J. Gaines A lack of dignity was shown throughout A Lesson Before Dying in the characters of Grant, Jefferson, Miss Emma, Tante Lou, and Vivian. All of these characters in the novel struggled with their lack of human morals which reflected on their impertinent actions towards themselves and among others. The story takes place in the1940's small Cajun town of Bayonne, Louisiana. In this time period there was an abundance of racial segregation between african american people and a strong bias towards white people. This shouldn't be an excuse or reason of why there was very little dignity throughout the novel. Furthermore, Ernest J. Gaines gives us plenty of examples of how these characters showed this lack of dignity among themselves and others. Grant Wiggins, a school teacher, is the most educated man in the community. He 's been to the university and came back home to teach at the same school that he went to growing up as a child. This is an achievement of itself , and most of the people in his community show him lots of respect for taking on this ruthless job. Unfortunately, his lack of dignity is shown by him seeing his work at the school as being useless or unworthy. His perspective towards his own community is that nothing ever changes and that all of these years of slavery had brought his people 's advancement to a sudden stop. Because of this feeling Grant shows several times in the novel that he wants to leave town and start a new life somewhere else. He says in the novel, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
