South America Population Growth
In this project, I will examine the relative rate of population growth for the individual countries of a selected region. I chose ten countries in Africa:
Morocco, Egypt, Sudan, Mali, Nigeria, Kenya, Zambia, Angola, and South Africa, one country from Eastern Europe, Estonia, one country from Asia,
China, one country from the Middle East, Iran, one country from South America, Bolivia, and the United States. Below, I will rank each of the
countries from highest to lowest in each of the categories concerning population growth and describe their relationships. Population growth is influenced
by multiple factors, such as, population policies, culture, and geography.
In figure 1 and figure 2 above, I have ranked the countries that I have chosen in order from highest to lowest total fertility rate (TFR) and maternal
mortality rate (MMR). The data shows that the TFR is congruous with the MMR within most of the countries. The ... Show more content on

Population policies vary by region. Countries experiencing overpopulation restrict population growth, while countries experiencing under–population,
such as Estonia, have adopted pro–natalist policies (Pittsburgh Post–Gazette, 2006). In Africa, there are some countries experiencing overpopulation and
some experiencing under–population, this results in the need for different policies in different countries of the continent (Stratfor, 2013). Cultural
factors include religious attitudes towards birth control, status gain from having children, the role of women in society, and sexual morality.
Geographic factors include the environmental conditions and vulnerability and resilience to natural disasters. One example of the environment
influencing population growth and distribution is Mali. Due to poor agriculture and harsh desert life, Mali's population is lower than other northern
desert regions (Maps of World,

Effects Of Exponential Population Growth
1) What is exponential population growth? I found this a bit confusing the more I researched it. My understanding of Exponential is when something
grows at a rate that doubles – 2, 4, 8, 16, 32, etc. However, it has a little different context when applied to population. The explanation I found that
seems the clearest is as a population's per capita (individual) growth rate stays the same regardless of population size, the population grows faster and
faster as it gets larger (Khan, 2017). 2) Is the global population growing exponentially and why? This answer (to me) can be yes and no. According to
Roser and Ortiz–Ospina (2017), actual growth is declining, but the population is rising. In the 20th century, the world's population quadrupled; but will
not double in the 21st. The fastest doubling period was 1950–1987 (37 years) when the population grew from 2.5 billion to 5 billion. Since 1962 when
the growth rate was 2.1%, the growth rate has slowed along with the doubling rate. It is also estimated that the world's population will reach 11
billion by 2088, but will have taken nearly 100 years to get there. As resources begin to taper off, so will growth – this is known as Logistic Growth. I
do not believe we are there yet, however, we are heading there. I do not know if this is an indicator or not, but Japan is experiencing a population shift
where the elderly outnumber the younger and is expected to increase in the coming decades and the population is shrinking

The Importance of Controlling Growth
Sean Baghaloo s104585 University of the People In the bible when god created man he had stated "Be fruitful and multiply, and fill the earth",
(Genesis 1:28). It would seem that mankind has responded to our fathers request quite well. But is seven billion that big of a number? "If everyone in
the world stood shoulder to shoulder, we could all fit within the city limits of Los Angeles", (cbsnews.com, n.d.), so then what is the big deal about the
growing population? Well, humans must eat, use energy, consume water and also humans will need more space to live as the population grows.
This means that there will need to be a lot more food to be grown and produced, a lot more raw materials used to make energy and a lot more land
to build infrastructure for humans to live and more water. Which is all fine and dandy until one is reminded that land, and raw materials are limited
and the rate of food production is linear and land availability is also a factor for production. If that is not bad enough, according to prb.org (2011),
"There are now seven billion people on earth, and projections show that we will top eight billion in just twelve years from now." It is quite obvious
that policies need to be implemented which limit or control the population growth rate or we might use up the finite resources which we have on earth.
Since the industrial revolution there has been a greater dependency of energy in order to carry

Three Views of Population Growth
Scenario 1 – Disastrous
As the century began, natural resources are under increasing pressure, threatening public health and development. Water shortages, soil exhaustion, loss
of forests, air and water pollution, and degradation of coastlines afflict many areas. As the world's population grows, improving living standards without
destroying the environment is a global challenge.
Most developed economies currently consume resources much faster than they can regenerate. Most developing countries with rapid population growth
face the urgent need to improve living standards. As we humans exploit nature to meet present needs, are we destroying resources needed for the
future? In the past decade in every environmental sector, conditions have ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Pollution is decreasing in the world's seas due to the improved sanitation. Ocean fisheries are prospering due to the improved measures that are taken to
restock the once dwindling ocean resources.
В•Forests: With improved technology, it is easier than ever to maintain and even improve on the amount of forestry. More trees are being planted and
grown, while larger areas are being converted into new forests. As stated earlier, forests provide over US$400 billion to the world economy annually
and are vital to maintaining healthy ecosystems. Future demands for forestry products will not even exceed 25% of consumption.
В•Biodiversity: As stated earlier, the earth's biological diversity is crucial to the continued vitality of agriculture and medicine –– and perhaps even to
life on earth itself. The global population has realized the importance of plant and animal species and has begun to reproduce those plant and animal
species which were once on the verge of extinction.
В•Global climate change: The earth's surface has begun to cool due to the lowered amount of greenhouse gas emissions. The global temperature will
begin to decrease and sea levels would remain at a normal level. The once feared issue of global warming will become nothing more than a distant
memory.
Scenario 3 В– Wildcard

Abstract
This paper discusses the topic of humanity population growth. It provides the reader with real and credible information about the current state of
overpopulation, its tendencies and projections into the future. More and more problems occur every year and their cause lies in the mankind itself.
Since the resources are starting to end, flora and fauna suffer and wars for territories become even fiercer – it becomes obvious that the ecological
disaster is coming. Its prevention is the main task for contemporary researchers and scientists. Effects of Population Growth
Nowadays humanity accepts its more than huge population as normal, assuming that the overwhelming amount of people, with all their life processes
and results of their activities do not harm the ecosystem of our planet. The majority of contemporary people falsely believe that we can continue to
increase in our numbers, and that this practice does not affect the environment, flora, fauna and the life of humanity itself. Despite everything seems
normal, humanity has already crossed all the borders and limits, presented by our planet. The Earth is not able to sustain such large population of people.
According to the data presented by Wordlometers, statistical engine presented by the leading researchers and designers from all over the world, the
total amount of people living on Earth is projected to reach 7.325 billion

Negative Effects Of Population Growth
Humans have grown. Not just in size, but in population. With this population growth comes a lifestyle change, as there are more and more hard
working people on the planet there are also an increasing amount of sedentary people. Population growth causes the modern lifestyle to be sedentary.
As said in an article by Smithsonian, "For millions of years all humans, early and modern alike, had to find their own food. They spent a large part of
each day gathering plants and hunting or scavenging animals. Then, within just the past 12,000 years, our species, Homo sapiens, made the transition
to producing food and changing our surroundings." This quote shows that as population grows over time, people are more able to have their
surroundings adapt to them rather than the people adapting to their surroundings. The food that people eat, as well as the resources people use,
become easily accessible and require less effort to acquire. This leads to a sedentary modern lifestyle.
As Human population has grown, so has an acceptance of population growth. People have been aware of the problem of overpopulation and a
sedentary lifestyle for centuries, this is something people can take comfort in, according to an article written by National Geographic on the effects of
human population growth. According to this article there have been many ancient religious scriptures written by the aztecs and mayans that have
indicated at a concern for too many people a well as an apocalypse because of

The Impacts of Population Growth
Throughout human history, population growth is one of the most important topics brought into discussion. Globally, there are about 7.2 billion people
in the world, and it will rise up to 11 billion or more by the 21st century (Brown). When we look back in the history, population growth has been so
slow as to be imperceptible within a single generation, "Reaching a globally population of 1 billion in 1804 required the entire time since the humans
appeared on the scene. To add the second billion, it took until 1927, just over 100 years. Thirty– three years later, in 1960, world population reached 3

However, I would more rather believe that our ecological systems will self–fix the population problems as the natural resource pressure and social
pressure increase.
The capacity of natural resources is one of the most essential information to indicate how many people would fit in this planet. Aquifers and river
basins are two of the natural water resources that to supply drinking water, industry and agricultural irrigation. In the analysis report of the water
supply and demand in the Colorado River Basin, water use from the Colorado River Basin has tripled since 1923, and started passing beyond the
amount of water supply in 2000 (Katel). Since then, the reserved river resources became imbalanced and started decreasing every year. The rapidly
growth of population and impropriated human activities are two of the main reasons that destroy the pervious balancing ecosystem. With the
population growth increasing, the world will consume more water, grain, and food, and creating more wastes than before. In fact, there are around
70% of accessible fresh water to use globally in agricultural businesses and to produce grain to feed people and livestock, but 60% of this is wasted
due to the leaky irrigation system and inefficient application of methods as

Human Population Growth
Human population growth is becoming a huge issue in our world today. The population is increasing rapidly. The reason that it is becoming a
concern is because it has affected the economic, environmental, and social aspects of our world. In the film Frontline: Heat, we can see how there
might not be a future for our planet unless we are able to reduce the emissions and make our world a safe place. Not only for the present but also for
future generations so that they are able to live long and healthy lives. An increase in human population can influence our economy. Some of the factors
that are affected are unemployment, poverty and the restriction of economic expansion. When the population increases, the cost of health, education, ...

The revenues are not enough to provide for the population growth. This affects families to save less because they are spending all of their income on
basic needs and cannot afford to educate their children, which produces poverty in the next generation. This results in low qualification and low chance
of employment for children when they reach the working age. Due to this, industries and services cannot develop. With the increase of population, the
volume of employment and unemployment increases. The number of unemployed depends on the size of the active population called the Labour
Force. If the growth rate of the population is higher than the job opportunities available to the labour force, unemployment will occur. When there is an
increase in population, society is solely focused on providing the basic needs. This results in the lack of obtaining education and because of this they
cannot help the economy expand. Also, there are more consumers with the increase of population than producers, causing the restriction of economic
expansion.
Not only is our economy impacting the population, but so is the environment. "Population is the number one threat to our environment". (Population

population has also increased the land uses, resource uses and pollution problems. A raise in land use

Background
The earth as we know it is spiraling towards extinction and the main enemy is overpopulation. Because of the increase in humans and their innate
ability to destroy what its' resources we could possibly lose our world as we know it. The balance in our living systems versus the population is not
equal. We in America tend to live for right now, with little or no regard for our future. Can we change? What must we do to change? Let us

To say we are multiplying life like flies is an understatement. However, some nations are working to reduce baby booms. One such Nation is China
with their two–child rule passed in October 2015 (Feng, 2017), many felt this was a step in the right direction in curtailing a population boom that was
considered one of the highest on the planet. While some viewed this as control and a step towards socialism, while others reflected on the positive
steps towards sustainability and the countries need to prepare for the future. Should other countries follow suit? In reviewing the damage that is piling
up against our resources due to overpopulation, one would think all governments would consider this. Again, we think should keep thinking, more
people, more food, and water, more homes will be built, and the list goes on. Is this what caused groups of people to become extinct such as the
Vikings or the Islanders? It is certainly possible. You cannot continue to drain off

The Global Issue Of Population Growth
Beyond a doubt we urgently need to address the devastating global issue of population growth in the United States America before we destroy our
planet. We are facing many devastating economic problems, such as pollution, global warming, education, but the most critical is overconsumption.
Overpopulation is a huge problem in the United States of America, which is causing us to run out of natural resources. The human race is already too
large and is destroying the natural systems that support us. There are many solutions to this problem, but the common factor is controlling the human
race. What can we do as a society to help contribute to controlling the population growth? "The United States is the most overpopulated country in the
world". (Ehrlich)
Let's first discuss what is considered to be overpopulated? Overpopulation is "The condition of having a population so dense as to cause environmental
deterioration, an impaired quality of life, or a population crash". (Merriam–Webster Dictionary.com, 2011). The growing rate of population in America
is becoming exceeding extreme and dangerous. "The rate of population increase, now approximately 1.7 percent a year will decline to a little less than
1 percent sometime between the years 2020–2025". (Ehrlich) The more people added on to this earth the more resources we will have to use to
maintain. Arije 2

Immigration has had a major impact upon the United States population growth, while the less developed countries, such as Africa and Asia have nearly
all the population growth. By 2050, India will become the most populated country (Mooney, page 440). The world is expected to increase in
population by 2.3 billion individuals, between 2009 and 2050; it is projected by the 2009 report of United Nations, a population of 9.1 billion in the
world. The Industrial Revolution aided in the swift growth of world population, and it improves the standard of living conditions, such as better food,

Exponential Growth
In mathematics the exponential function is used for many things such as used for something increasing or decreasing at a steady rate, personal finance,
population growth, radioactive decay, and loan interest rates. One excessive problem throughout our world is the amount of human population, it has
become a big issue and it is increasing rapidly. One way we can gather the estimated value of the population in future years is to use values and insert
them into the exponential function. Exponential functions are written as in the form as f(x) = bx, where b > 0 and b в‰ 1
In this function b represents the base and the power x is the exponent. f(x) = a b xThe domain of f(x) = a b x is all real numbers. The range of f(x) = a
b x is all positive real numbers, f(x) > 0 or y > 0
In this equation a is unable to equal one yet is has to be greater than zero, but it is the y–intercept and b is the base having a as well as b together
allows us to determine the exponential functions input and output so we are able to plot the values on the graph and lets us see either the steady
incline or decline throughout population growth. The exponential function has a variety of characteristics it is able to increase extremely fast, decrease
extremely fast, pass the horizontal line test, its inverse is also a function, and will get very close to the x–axis but will never touch it.

period of time. Humans have been on this planet for about 200,000 years and in that short amount of time humans have changed, and grown drastically
within that time frame. If the population continues to grow at rapid rates our planet, environment, civilization, and even humanity will suffer due to
over consumption, pollution, and destruction causing depletion and possibly even extinction. Overpopulation of civilizations could lead to the depletion
of fresh water, other natural resources, food supplies, and even habitations. Humanity as a whole make choices regarding housing, food, water, ... Show

The third era is the current account of population growth. The population numbers are currently declining and will remain in a declining state indicating
the culmination of this era.
Poverty, medical intervention, technology, nutritional and cultural factors play a role in increasing and decreasing growth population numbers. With
the expansion of suburbanization communities were introduced to the industrial age. Technology such as farming equipment, machinery in factories,
and simple household tools and utilities introduced a great deal of employment opportunities. With the introduction of farming equipment, the
agricultural and nutritional aspect of our society improved greatly. This era also introduced our society to child labor and the introduction of women in
the workforce. (Sachs, 2010) Due to the introduction of women in the workplace, women chose to contribute financially to their family instead of
staying home, and having babies. Women were also choosing an education rather than being a housewife. When we look at today's society men and
women are following the past and choosing educations and careers instead of immediately starting family's or having smaller families. Medical
intervention has also played a role in the population growth and decrease. Not only do we have contraception to decrease population growth, we also
have fertility treatments to help increase population growth. Immunizations, in the use of

Food And Hunger : Factors And The Effects Of Population...
Food and hunger are issues that have been impacted by population growth, but some countries have been affected more than others. This will be
explained through the thoughts of Robbins and other individuals. According to Robbins and Thomas Malthus, both agree that an increase in
population will put pressure on the resources. As younger generations become older, they need more food to survive, so they are consuming more,
putting pressure on the available resources. In some areas of the world, they were experiencing high levels of infant mortality rates, due to suffering
from malnutrition. Unfortunately, due to the symptoms they had, such as "headaches, tremors, weakness, irritability" (Robbins, 2010: 170) they
would seek doctors for medicinal treatments and not nutrients. This was seen in places such as it was seen in Brazil, where "approximately 1 million
children younger than five years of age die each year" (Robbins, 2010: 168). These numbers are extremely high and are a cry for help, if only
individuals knew that they needed food and water and not medicine, the mortality rates would not be so high. Although most individuals can agree that
a growing population can cause food shortages, some researchers believed that society did not have to worry about this issue. This was because
individuals were inventing new and better things to aid in food production. Technology advances were able to develop improved fertilizers, pesticides,
herbicides, allow food to be refrigerated,

Human Population Growth
Once, when the world was changing and new lands were being explored and conquered, the opinion of the masses was "Growth is good." There was
no worry about the lives being harmed or how large our impact was, or even of the future repercussions our actions might have. However, this
once–carefree opinion has twisted and mutated and created a monster: human population growth. It's big. It's fast. And there's almost no way to stop
it, with our current rate of increase. The consequences of our forefather's actions, carried out so long ago and not given so much as a backwards
glance, are now coming back to haunt us, and they fight dirty. This growing beast is pressing an ever–increasing strain upon our Earth's resources, and
it seems like there is nothing we can do to prevent present and future degradation. Luckily, the solution to this expanding issue is sustainability.
Scientists and researchers across the globe are working to design effective new ways to keep our way of life without fanning the flames of global
change. The bottom line is, the quicker we get started on reducing and reversing global climate alteration, the better off everyone will be. Human
population growth has and is drastically affecting the cycles through which our environment works. Ever since the Industrial Revolution in the 1750s,
the growth has skyrocketed. With the additional help of the Medical Revolution in the 1950s, our population has increased exponentially, causing

Population Growth Is A Crisis Or Not?
Population growth is a great concern of some scientists and this topic has been debating for decades. Increasing of population has been put pressuring
on natural resources because of demands of production and consumption are high. According to the BBC horizon documentary (2009), number of
current population is about seven billion, seven times more than the last 10,000 years. One main factor of rapid population growth is eliminating from
infected diseases. In the last 10,000 years people had a huge problem with infected diseases such as measles, malaria, cholera and smallpox and this
could prevent population. When number of population increase, demand of food production and consumption go up and this requires a lot of natural
resources to be exploited. Therefore, population growth could be a crisis or not?
From Neo–Malthusianism or deep green perspective, capable of the earth to produce resource is limited compare to rates of human's consuming
pattern. In his essay, Malthus states that power of the earth 's production is simply less than power of the population (cited in BBC horizon
documentary 2009). This view is supported by another research, World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF 2008) indicates global ecological footprint in
1988 was over the earth 's productive capacity and by 2005 it will be more than 30 per cent of the earth's capacity (cited in Harding, R, Hendriks, &,

The Rate Of Population Growth
Despite a continuing slowdown in the rate of population growth, it is "almost inevitable" that the number of people on the planet will rise from 7.3
billion today to 9.7 billion in 2050, according to the latest UN projections.
Ten years ago, the world population was growing by 1.24% annually; today, the percentage has dropped to 1.18%– or roughly another 83 million
people a year. The overall growth rate, which peaked in the late 1960s, has been falling steadily since the 1970s.
The UN report attributes the slowdown to the near–global decline in fertility rates – measured as the average number of children born to a woman over
her lifetime – even in Africa, where the rates remain the highest.
However, that fall is being offset by countries in which populations are already large, or where high numbers of children are born. According to the
study, nine countries will account for half the world's population growth between now and 2050: India, Nigeria, Pakistan, the Democratic Republic of
Congo, Ethiopia, Tanzania, the US, Indonesia and Uganda.
"Continued population growth until 2050 is almost inevitable, even if the decline of fertility accelerates," says the report, World Population Prospects:
the 2015 revision.
"There is an 80% probability that the population of the world will be between 8.4 and 8.6 billion in 2030, between 9.4 and 10 billion in 2050 and
between 10 and 12.5 billion in 2100."

Limitations of Population Growth
Introduction There are a number of factors that can contribute to the growth of a population and these trends can be seen in a number of species. It is
generally believed, from an ecological perspective, that populations will display either an exponential of logistic growth rate. If optimal environments
are consistently maintained with no biotic or abiotic limiting factors (excess food, excess space availability, optimum climactic environment, no
predation, etc) then a population will grow in an exponential direction. Species with high maximal relative growth rates do not occupy infertile habitats
because their physiologies are more sensitive to suboptimal habitats and so their relative growth rates decrease more rapidly as fertility ... Show more

Results According to the data collected, the Daphnia magna population in neither the supplemented treatment nor the unsupplemented treatment
portrayed either the exponential or logistic growth model. The supplemented group showed a steady decline in the population while the
unsupplemented group at first began with a significant drop off at first but then also became a steady decline. The week with the highest maximum

A Common Fear Of Population Growth
It's a common fear that population growth will exhaust resources and result in social or economic disaster if it is not controlled. It is anticipated that
most of the projected population growth during this century will take place in developing nations. These countries have faced many challenges in
recent years, including low levels of education, poor health standards, scarcity, limited housing, natural resource exhaustion, strife, and monetary and
governmental command by other countries. In places like Africa, industrial development has stalled and most workers still make a living from survival
agriculture. The association between population and the environment is a complicated one, human cultures' bearings on the environment are a ... Show

Mostly they focused their attention on teaching married couples about birth control and dispensing contraceptives, but some programs took more
coercive approaches. China imposed a limit of one child per family in 1979, with two children allowed in special cases (Price, 1999).
Large societies obviously consume more supplies than small ones, but depletion patterns and technology selections may report for more environmental
harms than pure digits of people. The U.S. population is about one–fourth as large as that of China or India, but the United States currently uses far
more energy because Americans are wealthier and use their prosperity to buy energy–intensive goods like automobiles and electronics (Arrow & et al,
1995). However, China and India are developing and becoming more prosperous, so their ecological effects will increase because of both population
expansion and consumption levels in the next several years. As income increases and technologies diffuse through society, purchasers start to value
environmental quality more greatly and become more able to pay for it.
Carrying capacity is a term derived from ecology, its defined as the maximum number of beings a habitat can sustain indeterminately without destroying
the resources. For most species, there are four variables that influence the calculating of carrying capacity:

Population Growth And Economic Development
The global demographic trend has become a subject of discussion by researchers, policymakers, and the mass media. Economic performance in any
country is, to a substantial degree, affected by the country's demographic situation. In recent decades, the developed countries have been experiencing
declining fertility rates that caused serious shortages of the workforce. Besides, the plunging fertility rates have led to the phenomenon called "ageing
population" which has become a socio–economic reality in many developed countries and which has put a big strain on their pension systems.
Furthermore, in 2014, there was a campaign tagged "Do it for Denmark" where Danes were encouraged to go for more babies to check the decreasing
birth rates. On the other hand, the poor economic performance of especially developing economies is related to their demographic growth; therefore,
funds are allocated for campaign against their population growth. The importance of the relationship between population growth and economic
development has been well recognized by development economists. As Dawson and Tiffin (1998: 149) have pointed out, "most textbooks on economic
development include a section on population and development".
Despite the fact that there are numerous research studies on the relationship between population and economic development, there is no universal
consensus as to whether population expansion is beneficial, detrimental or neutral to economic growth. Thirlwall (1994: 143) has

Population Growth And Its Effects
INTRO: Population Growth is an issue that exists in today's world that needs to be confronted before it becomes out of hand. The population itself has
reached overwhelming numbers making it a problem that could turn to be dangerous. The amount of humans that the earth can support or the carrying
capacity is slowly rising but at a much slower rate than the population growth rate. The increasing growth rate has its negative effects environmentally,
agriculturally, socially, and economically and also has its positive effects nationally, and economically. The government is brainstorming and trying to
come up with ways to decrease the growth rate or at least decrease its negative effects and also creating agencies take handle and regulate population
growth.
POPULATION: It is predicted that in about 1000 B.C. the population was about 265 million people. Theworld population continues to grow greatly.
Between 1850 and 1950, the overall population doubled from 1.265 to 2.516 billion people. Between 1000 B.C. and 1850 the population grew on
average a little less than 1.5 million people per year.(Our World In Data). As of 2015 the human population is over 7.3 billion people. According to
the United Nations, the human population will be over 9 billion by 2050. By 2100 they predict that the population will be between 9.6 and 12.3
billion. In terms of population history can be split into three different periods. The first period was a very long period of time where the rate of

The Growth Of The World Population
Overview
When considering the growth of the world's population there Is a concentrated look at Four Main factors with a fifth element now ,slowly becoming a
large factor. They are fertility rates, mortality rates (life expectancy), the initial age profile of the population (whether it is comparatively old or
relatively young to begin with), migration, and now religion, where focus is placed on migrating to or from a particular faction.
The forces behind population change
Population Change:A view at Growth
Fertility has been on a slow descent over the last decade and is expected to continue declining. As a result, the world,s population rate is also slowing
down. But from the year 2010–2050 ,the world's population is expected to rise some 35%.That is approximately 2 Billion people.Fertility patterns may
differ between countries, and larger geographic locations for a myriad of reasons, including cultural standards, degrees of economic improvement,
education systems and government policies that encourage ,or discourage, family planning. Female reproductive rates may also be a result of infant
fatality rates, participation in the labor market, income levels and social status, among other factors.("Main Factors Driving Population Growth | Pew
Research Center," 2015)
Life Expectancy, which is the expected life term we are given from infancy, has been on the up–rise, and is expected to continue its ascent over the next

Population Growth Causes
Two hundred years ago less than one billion humans roamed the earth. Today the current world population stands at 7.3 billion and is expected to
reach 8.5 billion by 2030 (source UN) this is due to the decline in death rates and increase in birth rates. The population has seen fluctuations, and
changes over the centuries with astonishing peaks during the 20th century. In order to understand these changes, we will need study the growth, the
explosions and drops in the world's population. In this unit, we will therefore be analysing the causes of population change as well as the potential
consequences.
One of the first ever triggers of a rapid population growth was 10 000 BC, the beginning of the agricultural revolution also known as the Neolithic
revolution. During the Palaeolithic age, the human lifestyle was very different to that of what we know now. It was a Nomad lifestyle, they lived a
wilder life of hunting gathering and travelling. It was a harsh and dangerous lifestyle, food was often scarce. The Neolithic revolution first took place
in the "Fertile Crescent" or Mesopotiona Known today as Iraq. farming and pastoralism was one of the first realisation that there was no longer a need
to move and hunt as you were able to cultivate food in the same spot which triggered the beginning of more complex society's. The advancement
created a food surplus which meant you could provide for a larger population and store the food for difficult times and winters. Furthermore, the

The Problem Of Rapid Population Growth
It took the beginning of time until 1804 to reach a world population of one billion people. Population statistics show that there were 1.6 billion
people in 1900 and this figure reached 6 billion before the end of the 20th century. Over the past several decades, the world 's population has been
growing exponentially. According to the population statistics, this figure is going to ascend to more than 9 billion people by the end of 2050. Recent
studies shows that the growth rate of population has somewhat steadied from the prior projections due to various things such as increased education,
along with higher death rates due to the spread of numerous diseases. Despite these recent projections, the overall trend of rapid population growth
remains, creating numerous challenges for engineers. The main concern for engineers is that this rapid increase in population, along with fast paced
industrial growth, places a tremendous strain on land, energy, and water resources that are essential for human survival. These challenges for engineers
will required them to use their talents in effort to improve these situations.
One of the biggest concerns for engineers with the growing population is the tremendous strain on land. In many areas of the world, the land suited for
food production is dwindling. This creates a major problem since there will be a high demand of food production with the growing population. Suitable
land and mass food production are both necessary for human survival.

Population Growth In America
The United States population is growing rapidly. At a rate of 0.7% per year currently, that equates to about 9 million new people a year, after the
number of deaths are accounted for. With the number of people seen on the streets rising and the number of incarcerated criminals "dropping" to
around 0.2%, it is difficult to see where all these new people are going to fit into society. As hard as it is to imagine a new baby born every eight
seconds, that is the reality currently facing America. However, while this type ofpopulation growth is likely going to cause America's demise, another
country is currently populating at a rate even America cannot compete with: India. At an astonishing 1.7% increase per year, India is currently
populated with almost 900 million more people than the United States. With less than half the land size and an undeniable need for more resources to
survive, India has been faced with the largest increase of population within the last century. However, unlike the United States, India's government has
taken crucial steps towards helping to control their population. Albeit, their methods are a bit unorthodox and incredibly appalling by Western
standards. Regardless, in order to maintain a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Population Growth in Perspective
Introduction
To anyone even remotely acquainted with the situation, the ever–expanding world population can easily be a cause of grave concern. Indeed, the
simple realization that the total world population will most likely be doubling within the next century may seem to imply catastrophe. Considering the
strain our current huge population puts on the world, is it not natural to presume that two times our number will spell disaster? While this is the view
held by many prominent voices, there also is a less–noticed group of people who contend that the resiliency of the earth and the ingenuity of its people
will keep the planet a decent place to live.
In this paper, I attempt to critically examine ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Generally, people have operated under the assumption that the world was (or was on its way to being) overpopulated.
I began my research in this topic with the same outlook. I initially wanted to research overpopulation because I was deeply concerned with its
implications. I wanted to understand the causes of population growth and to learn what might be done to ameliorate the problem. Soon into the
research, however, I happened upon pieces of literature opposing the idea of an overpopulation crisis and immediately respected certain aspects of
their arguments. Quickly, I was forced to change the scope of my question from "what will be the consequences of overpopulation?" to "what exactly
does overpopulation mean?" and "does an overpopulation problem even exist?".
History of Population Crises
The seed of my doubt that an overpopulation crisis was imminent was planted when I began to examine the historical record of population concerns.
As a history major, I have at least some respect for patterns in history. While I recognize that new things can emerge, often a current event is a variant
on an earlier expressed theme.
Regarding population, the first documented concerns over population size date from a Babylonian epic from 1600 BC (Cohen, 1995). More writings
on the topic across the globe have continued since then, themselves probably increasing at a rate faster than the

Population Growth And The Population Essay
Population Growth
Introduction Population growth is the increase in the number of people through birth rate and immigration rate within a specific population with
respect to the decrease within the population though emigration rate and death rate. But do all individuals play a major factor in determining population
growth? No, contributions to population growth vary based on each individual present within the population (Graham 1985). For example, different
ages of individuals hold different weights that others. This can help is compare the specific age ranges within a group and will help us lead to
further analysis (Werner and Caswell 1977). With this being said, populations are dependent on different trends and demographic factors that are
occurring that that time within the specific population that is being studied. Some of these factors include gender and race. These can the predict
trends in life expectancy and survivorship of different populations (Boucekkine, David, and Licandro 2002) . Discrepancies between races and
gender roles have been smuggled over the years (Duncan 1961). Although, they still hold weight in some studies within ecology such as life
expectancy. African Americans have shown that they have a lower age average than what American. This could possible be due to various reason
such as health risks like hypertension and cardiovascular disease (Brondolo, Rieppi, and Kelly et al 2003). In this lab report, we are going to be focus

The Cuban Population And Population Growth And The Rate Of...
Cuba is currently described as a developing country and when exploring this countries history it became clear why they are considered so. At the
moment, the population is decreasing at a rate of –3% according to cia.gov. According to prb.org, the birth rate per thousand is eleven and death rate
per thousand is nine which can lead one to infer that the rate of natural increase, is 2 per 1000(or .2%). Something that can be taken away from these
stats is that the rate of natural increase is positive while the rate of population growth is negative. The reason for this is an irrational number of young
people who leave this country.According prb.org, the net migration rate is–5. This means that for every 1000 people in the country, five people leave.
This number is not supposed to be negative; however, it is because of how many people leave this country. Most of the people leaving are the
young people who will end up having children. This becomes a problem because if all of the people who are of childbearing age leave and have
children elsewhere, there are no young people to help offset the old population. According to the site havannatimes.org," The combination of young
people leaving the country and low birth rates makes Cuban society endure a population aging process. The percentage of people under 60 has been
growing linearly for decades, as the percentage of people under 20 decreases proportionately." Cuba is currently in stage 4 of the DTM model. . The

The Importance Of Human Population Growth
Why Human Population Growth needs to be Addressed The human population growth rate for 2017 according to worldmeters is 1.12%. Today, the
world is facing negative effects because each day we inch closer to the carrying capacity. The goal for this problem is to inform society about the
effects Human Population Growth carries along with it and why the world should come together and prevent it before it causes serious issues. Living
in a world of social media at the fingertips, women are constantly sexualized and the act of sex is encouraged. With the help of social media, the ad
with a hot girl can be transformed into an ad about condoms and birth control. I believe that human population growth can be controlled by educating
society about contraceptives. If this issue is not taken serious, the world will face a lack of resources, shortage of space, and a weakened environment.
First, if human population growth is not controlled we will soon run out of resources. The larger the population, the more demand for resources which
leads to the issue of the earth not replenishing quick enough to keep up with the demand. In addition, humans require fossil fuels for energy; the
requirement for fossil fuels is high often leaving society to question if there will be enough for future generations. For an example, in 1971 the
electricity consumption was at the lowest with 1,199.79 verses the latest update in 2014 with 3,128.4. Although there is proof that human population
is taking a toll on resources, people believe it is a positive thing because it allows mankind to invent new ways to produce more resources. According
to Acton, it opens opportunities for human knowledge to allow us to produce more finished products out of less raw materials leaving natural
resources to become more available. Even though humans are finding new ways to save natural resources, to some extent they will always be used
and will eventually run out. Second, if human population growth continues to spiral out of control, we will be left with no space on earth. The demand
for new housing or new shopping centers, leads to more deforestation. Deforestation is the removing of trees and clearing animals off of their natural
habitats in order to place

Population Growth
Over time, human population has increased and unfortunately has caused a lot of problems to the economy as well as to the environment. Many of the
issues that population growth has affected are climate changes, consumption and waste, family planning, poverty, food and hunger, and changes to the
economy. According to data researched by the United Nations, "the world population will reach 8 billion to 10 billion by the year 2030" (Livi–Bacci:
1992:31–32 cited in Robbins, 2010:130). Eight to ten billion is a lot of people living in the world, which unfortunately might cause more problems than
solutions to these issues. The book written by author Richard H. Robbins, Global Problems and the Culture of Capitalism, includes an ... Show more

(Malthus 1798 cited in Robbins, 2010:132). This view was known as the "Malthusian trap" (Mshahara, 2017). Everything is related to one another,
and if one thing changes, then usually the other things will too. As Robbins expressed that Malthus' view was seen in Europe, the demand for food
decreased, the population decreased, mortality decreased, and then right after, a rise in population occurred (Robbins, 2010: 157). Another issue that
has caused the environment to change is deforestation. The land gets cleared for agriculture purposes, to provide room for growing crops, grazing
livestock and urban uses. As explained by Robbins, agriculturists would clear a few acres of land by cutting down the trees and burning them in a
process known as "slash and burn" (Robbins, 2010: 157). As individuals can see, population growth has done some negative changes to the earth.
Another result that has occurred from population growth is a change in consumption and waste. This subject has arguments on population growth
hindering economic development as well as not affecting it at all. As argued by Robbins, (Robbins 2010: 133–134) population growth has caused a
high demand for resources, such as water, food, and fuel. With population growing, that is why some communities are dealing with famine, poverty and
an increase in mortality rates. According to Massimi Livi–Bacci, (Livi–Bacci, 1992: 145 cited in Robbins, 2010: 134) population growth has not had an
effect on the economy.

Rapid Population Growth : A Country With The Largest Human...
Transitions in the developing world have generally produced more rapid population growth rates in mid–transition than historically observed in the
North. Two factors account for this very rapid expansion of population in these still largely traditional societies: the spread of medical technology such
as immunization and antibiotics after World War II, which led to vastly rapid declines in death rates, and a lag in declines in birth rates. Nigeria is a
country with the largest human population in Africa. Some of the results of human populations are; depletion of resources, human congestion, weather
modification, high unemployment rate, environmental degradation and a lot more. It is stated in science that matter occupies space and space is
limited, as a result, this phenomenon in turn will show that the fixed factor like space in the environment will be affected when a continuous factor like
population growth is put on it.
Over the period of the demographic transition, declines in fertility and mortality cause important changes in a population 's age composition. In general,
countries in the early stages of the transition have a younger age structure than countries in the later stages. A changing age distribution has significant
social and economic consequences, e.g. for the allocation of education, healthcare and social security resources to the young and old. Assessments of
this impact often rely on the so–called age–dependency ratio (DR) that summarizes key changes in the

The Growth Of Population Growth Essay
The present rate of population growth is one of the most significant environmental issues we as humans are facing. The exponential growth at which the
population is moving is having direct impacts on climate, energy, poverty, food, the global economy, and politics (Why Population Matters). The world
population is currently 7.3 billion people and there is growing doubt that the planet is able to sustain human needs and resource consumption
(Population Concern). The expansion of human population is impacting countries, societies, and cultures around the world differently. These
differences can occur due to, environmental, political, and societal factors that can determine the severity of the issue and how the country decides
to respond. The population is growing at exponential rates and can be expressed by calculating the double time, which is the number of years it
takes for population size to double (Harper, Chapter 5). For developed countries, the calculated double time is longer than that of a developing
country (Harper, Chapter 5). The first case study under analysis is that of Rwanda, one of the poorest nations in the world, which therefore has one of
the lowest double time growths (Harper, Chapter 5). Food scarcity and violence are the stories of Rwanda's fate and is outlined in Jared Diamond's
book, "Collapse". The second case study being examined is China's human population growth, which is not only negatively impacting its own country,
but impacting others at a

Asian Population Growth
Population growth is a problem to the Asian populations health, economy and poverty issues. The one child per family method is an option like what
China implemented. Method like birth control programs are also a way to figure out population growth issues. One method that china used in the
1980s was to tell the people that increasing economic growth would help hinder population growth. I dont see how explaining the harms of over
population to the public wouldn't be enough for the public to help fix this problem. Spreading awareness about contraceptives and not having such
young marriages are also ways to help with this problem.
The one child policy has a lot of exceptions and ethnic minorities do not have to follow this law. Steep fines would be given out to families that
broke the law. Also if their first child was a girl they were allowed to have another child. There isn't any exact numbers showing how this law has
affected the population growth directly. There's not a lot of ways to fix this problem so I feel like this has to be a positive solution to fixing this
problem. The fertility rate in China has fallen from 2.8 births per woman in 1979 to 1.5 in 2010. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Population Growth
Introduction
The population of Britain grew rapidly between 19th century and early 20th century. There are many reasons and factors that effected the growth of the
demographic. Another factor that caused population growth rapidly was people choose to give birth at younger age. It led to birth rate increase and
population increase too. By 1875 Public Health Act introduced: more clean water, more public toilet, more frequently rubbish removal and sewer &
drain available. It meant that people's health and sanitation were better. Then life expectancy became longer. From the list of factors, it may has any
argument whether which factor led to rapid population growth.

Another reason, food and jobs created were helping population growth was in late 19th century railways and steamships made it possible import
cheap foods extended to all places. Then more people able to afforded to buy food. This meant less people was starved and population would grow
because people were eating more healthy food. Additionally, during 19th century transport were greatly improved. This made travel faster. From
this point of view when railway mania introduced many routed was created because more rich people invested. Then many jobs were created and
this meant less people were unemployed. All the people from now have: food, job, money..... Then they wouldn't be died at young age. The
government banned children to work was a good point because it reduce the chance of death at young age. Also transport made food cheaper by
import meat and grain through steamship and railway extended elsewhere in Britain. During railway mania period, created a lot of job for people
who were unemployed to get going again. From the factor above it help increased population and more people employed. That meant people able to
afford to buy food and less death. Overall food and jobs created did helps a lot with population growth. However, people have anything they need in
their daily life such as food, job, money..... Then population would keeps grew without many people died.

South America Population Growth

  • 1. South America Population Growth In this project, I will examine the relative rate of population growth for the individual countries of a selected region. I chose ten countries in Africa: Morocco, Egypt, Sudan, Mali, Nigeria, Kenya, Zambia, Angola, and South Africa, one country from Eastern Europe, Estonia, one country from Asia, China, one country from the Middle East, Iran, one country from South America, Bolivia, and the United States. Below, I will rank each of the countries from highest to lowest in each of the categories concerning population growth and describe their relationships. Population growth is influenced by multiple factors, such as, population policies, culture, and geography. In figure 1 and figure 2 above, I have ranked the countries that I have chosen in order from highest to lowest total fertility rate (TFR) and maternal mortality rate (MMR). The data shows that the TFR is congruous with the MMR within most of the countries. The ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Population policies vary by region. Countries experiencing overpopulation restrict population growth, while countries experiencing under–population, such as Estonia, have adopted pro–natalist policies (Pittsburgh Post–Gazette, 2006). In Africa, there are some countries experiencing overpopulation and some experiencing under–population, this results in the need for different policies in different countries of the continent (Stratfor, 2013). Cultural factors include religious attitudes towards birth control, status gain from having children, the role of women in society, and sexual morality. Geographic factors include the environmental conditions and vulnerability and resilience to natural disasters. One example of the environment influencing population growth and distribution is Mali. Due to poor agriculture and harsh desert life, Mali's population is lower than other northern desert regions (Maps of World, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 2. Effects Of Exponential Population Growth 1) What is exponential population growth? I found this a bit confusing the more I researched it. My understanding of Exponential is when something grows at a rate that doubles – 2, 4, 8, 16, 32, etc. However, it has a little different context when applied to population. The explanation I found that seems the clearest is as a population's per capita (individual) growth rate stays the same regardless of population size, the population grows faster and faster as it gets larger (Khan, 2017). 2) Is the global population growing exponentially and why? This answer (to me) can be yes and no. According to Roser and Ortiz–Ospina (2017), actual growth is declining, but the population is rising. In the 20th century, the world's population quadrupled; but will not double in the 21st. The fastest doubling period was 1950–1987 (37 years) when the population grew from 2.5 billion to 5 billion. Since 1962 when the growth rate was 2.1%, the growth rate has slowed along with the doubling rate. It is also estimated that the world's population will reach 11 billion by 2088, but will have taken nearly 100 years to get there. As resources begin to taper off, so will growth – this is known as Logistic Growth. I do not believe we are there yet, however, we are heading there. I do not know if this is an indicator or not, but Japan is experiencing a population shift where the elderly outnumber the younger and is expected to increase in the coming decades and the population is shrinking ... • 3. Population Growth : The Importance Of Controlling Growth Population Growth: The Importance of Controlling Growth Sean Baghaloo s104585 University of the People In the bible when god created man he had stated "Be fruitful and multiply, and fill the earth", (Genesis 1:28). It would seem that mankind has responded to our fathers request quite well. But is seven billion that big of a number? "If everyone in the world stood shoulder to shoulder, we could all fit within the city limits of Los Angeles", (cbsnews.com, n.d.), so then what is the big deal about the growing population? Well, humans must eat, use energy, consume water and also humans will need more space to live as the population grows. This means that there will need to be a lot more food to be grown and produced, a lot more raw materials used to make energy and a lot more land to build infrastructure for humans to live and more water. Which is all fine and dandy until one is reminded that land, and raw materials are limited and the rate of food production is linear and land availability is also a factor for production. If that is not bad enough, according to prb.org (2011), "There are now seven billion people on earth, and projections show that we will top eight billion in just twelve years from now." It is quite obvious that policies need to be implemented which limit or control the population growth rate or we might use up the finite resources which we have on earth. Since the industrial revolution there has been a greater dependency of energy in order to carry ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Three Views of Population Growth Scenario 1 – Disastrous As the century began, natural resources are under increasing pressure, threatening public health and development. Water shortages, soil exhaustion, loss of forests, air and water pollution, and degradation of coastlines afflict many areas. As the world's population grows, improving living standards without destroying the environment is a global challenge. Most developed economies currently consume resources much faster than they can regenerate. Most developing countries with rapid population growth face the urgent need to improve living standards. As we humans exploit nature to meet present needs, are we destroying resources needed for the future? In the past decade in every environmental sector, conditions have ... В•Forests: With improved technology, it is easier than ever to maintain and even improve on the amount of forestry. More trees are being planted and grown, while larger areas are being converted into new forests. As stated earlier, forests provide over US$400 billion to the world economy annually and are vital to maintaining healthy ecosystems. Future demands for forestry products will not even exceed 25% of consumption. В•Biodiversity: As stated earlier, the earth's biological diversity is crucial to the continued vitality of agriculture and medicine –– and perhaps even to life on earth itself. The global population has realized the importance of plant and animal species and has begun to reproduce those plant and animal species which were once on the verge of extinction. В•Global climate change: The earth's surface has begun to cool due to the lowered amount of greenhouse gas emissions. The global temperature will begin to decrease and sea levels would remain at a normal level. The once feared issue of global warming will become nothing more than a distant memory. • 5. Effects Of Population Growth On The Environment Effects of Population Growth Name of Student Institution affiliation Abstract This paper discusses the topic of humanity population growth. It provides the reader with real and credible information about the current state of overpopulation, its tendencies and projections into the future. More and more problems occur every year and their cause lies in the mankind itself. Since the resources are starting to end, flora and fauna suffer and wars for territories become even fiercer – it becomes obvious that the ecological disaster is coming. Its prevention is the main task for contemporary researchers and scientists. Effects of Population Growth Nowadays humanity accepts its more than huge population as normal, assuming that the overwhelming amount of people, with all their life processes and results of their activities do not harm the ecosystem of our planet. The majority of contemporary people falsely believe that we can continue to increase in our numbers, and that this practice does not affect the environment, flora, fauna and the life of humanity itself. Despite everything seems normal, humanity has already crossed all the borders and limits, presented by our planet. The Earth is not able to sustain such large population of people. According to the data presented by Wordlometers, statistical engine presented by the leading researchers and designers from all over the world, the total amount of people living on Earth is projected to reach 7.325 billion ... • 6. Negative Effects Of Population Growth Humans have grown. Not just in size, but in population. With this population growth comes a lifestyle change, as there are more and more hard working people on the planet there are also an increasing amount of sedentary people. Population growth causes the modern lifestyle to be sedentary. As said in an article by Smithsonian, "For millions of years all humans, early and modern alike, had to find their own food. They spent a large part of each day gathering plants and hunting or scavenging animals. Then, within just the past 12,000 years, our species, Homo sapiens, made the transition to producing food and changing our surroundings." This quote shows that as population grows over time, people are more able to have their surroundings adapt to them rather than the people adapting to their surroundings. The food that people eat, as well as the resources people use, become easily accessible and require less effort to acquire. This leads to a sedentary modern lifestyle. As Human population has grown, so has an acceptance of population growth. People have been aware of the problem of overpopulation and a sedentary lifestyle for centuries, this is something people can take comfort in, according to an article written by National Geographic on the effects of human population growth. According to this article there have been many ancient religious scriptures written by the aztecs and mayans that have indicated at a concern for too many people a well as an apocalypse because of ... • 7. The Impacts Of Population Growth Jingjing Zhang Instructor Shay Tschirhart ENGL 1311L 13 November 2015 The Impacts of Population Growth Throughout human history, population growth is one of the most important topics brought into discussion. Globally, there are about 7.2 billion people in the world, and it will rise up to 11 billion or more by the 21st century (Brown). When we look back in the history, population growth has been so slow as to be imperceptible within a single generation, "Reaching a globally population of 1 billion in 1804 required the entire time since the humans appeared on the scene. To add the second billion, it took until 1927, just over 100 years. Thirty– three years later, in 1960, world population reached 3 billion" (Brown 15). Then the pace sped ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... However, I would more rather believe that our ecological systems will self–fix the population problems as the natural resource pressure and social pressure increase. The capacity of natural resources is one of the most essential information to indicate how many people would fit in this planet. Aquifers and river basins are two of the natural water resources that to supply drinking water, industry and agricultural irrigation. In the analysis report of the water supply and demand in the Colorado River Basin, water use from the Colorado River Basin has tripled since 1923, and started passing beyond the amount of water supply in 2000 (Katel). Since then, the reserved river resources became imbalanced and started decreasing every year. The rapidly growth of population and impropriated human activities are two of the main reasons that destroy the pervious balancing ecosystem. With the population growth increasing, the world will consume more water, grain, and food, and creating more wastes than before. In fact, there are around 70% of accessible fresh water to use globally in agricultural businesses and to produce grain to feed people and livestock, but 60% of this is wasted due to the leaky irrigation system and inefficient application of methods as ... • 9. Human Population Growth Human population growth is becoming a huge issue in our world today. The population is increasing rapidly. The reason that it is becoming a concern is because it has affected the economic, environmental, and social aspects of our world. In the film Frontline: Heat, we can see how there might not be a future for our planet unless we are able to reduce the emissions and make our world a safe place. Not only for the present but also for future generations so that they are able to live long and healthy lives. An increase in human population can influence our economy. Some of the factors that are affected are unemployment, poverty and the restriction of economic expansion. When the population increases, the cost of health, education, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The revenues are not enough to provide for the population growth. This affects families to save less because they are spending all of their income on basic needs and cannot afford to educate their children, which produces poverty in the next generation. This results in low qualification and low chance of employment for children when they reach the working age. Due to this, industries and services cannot develop. With the increase of population, the volume of employment and unemployment increases. The number of unemployed depends on the size of the active population called the Labour Force. If the growth rate of the population is higher than the job opportunities available to the labour force, unemployment will occur. When there is an increase in population, society is solely focused on providing the basic needs. This results in the lack of obtaining education and because of this they cannot help the economy expand. Also, there are more consumers with the increase of population than producers, causing the restriction of economic expansion. Not only is our economy impacting the population, but so is the environment. "Population is the number one threat to our environment". (Population Growth Impacts on the Environment website). Our population is rising beyond the earth's ability to maintain a reasonable quality of life. This enlarged population has also increased the land uses, resource uses and pollution problems. Because of the increase in humans and their innate ability to destroy what its' resources we could possibly lose our world as we know it. The balance in our living systems versus the population is not equal. We in America tend to live for right now, with little or no regard for our future. Can we change? What must we do to change? Let us Exponential Population Growth In his book, Collapse, (Diamond, J. 2005), the writer points to different reasons that come in to play in wiping out a colony of people. One of the most important points would be humans destroying the very resources they need to survive. To say we are multiplying life like flies is an understatement. However, some nations are working to reduce baby booms. One such Nation is China with their two–child rule passed in October 2015 (Feng, 2017), many felt this was a step in the right direction in curtailing a population boom that was considered one of the highest on the planet. While some viewed this as control and a step towards socialism, while others reflected on the positive steps towards sustainability and the countries need to prepare for the future. Should other countries follow suit? In reviewing the damage that is piling up against our resources due to overpopulation, one would think all governments would consider this. Again, we think should keep thinking, more people, more food, and water, more homes will be built, and the list goes on. • 11. The Global Issue Of Population Growth Beyond a doubt we urgently need to address the devastating global issue of population growth in the United States America before we destroy our planet. We are facing many devastating economic problems, such as pollution, global warming, education, but the most critical is overconsumption. Overpopulation is a huge problem in the United States of America, which is causing us to run out of natural resources. The human race is already too large and is destroying the natural systems that support us. There are many solutions to this problem, but the common factor is controlling the human race. What can we do as a society to help contribute to controlling the population growth? "The United States is the most overpopulated country in the world". (Ehrlich) Let's first discuss what is considered to be overpopulated? Overpopulation is "The condition of having a population so dense as to cause environmental deterioration, an impaired quality of life, or a population crash". (Merriam–Webster Dictionary.com, 2011). The growing rate of population in America is becoming exceeding extreme and dangerous. "The rate of population increase, now approximately 1.7 percent a year will decline to a little less than 1 percent sometime between the years 2020–2025". • 13. And Population Growth : Exponential Growth Izabella Anastasi Mr.Greybill Pre calc, per 5 22 November 2017 Exponential Growth In mathematics the exponential function is used for many things such as used for something increasing or decreasing at a steady rate, personal finance, population growth, radioactive decay, and loan interest rates. One excessive problem throughout our world is the amount of human population, it has become a big issue and it is increasing rapidly. One way we can gather the estimated value of the population in future years is to use values and insert them into the exponential function. Exponential functions are written as in the form as f(x) = bx, where b > 0 and b в‰ 1 In this function b represents the base and the power x is the exponent. f(x) = a b xThe domain of f(x) = a b x is all real numbers. The range of f(x) = a b x is all positive real numbers, f(x) > 0 or y > 0 In this equation a is unable to equal one yet is has to be greater than zero, but it is the y–intercept and b is the base having a as well as b together allows us to determine the exponential functions input and output so we are able to plot the values on the graph and lets us see either the steady incline or decline throughout population growth. The exponential function has a variety of characteristics it is able to increase extremely fast, decrease extremely fast, pass the horizontal line test, its inverse is also a function, and will get very close to the x–axis but will never touch it. The population numbers are currently declining and will remain in a declining state indicating the culmination of this era. Poverty, medical intervention, technology, nutritional and cultural factors play a role in increasing and decreasing growth population numbers. With the expansion of suburbanization communities were introduced to the industrial age. Technology such as farming equipment, machinery in factories, and simple household tools and utilities introduced a great deal of employment opportunities. With the introduction of farming equipment, the agricultural and nutritional aspect of our society improved greatly. This era also introduced our society to child labor and the introduction of women in the workforce. (Sachs, 2010) Due to the introduction of women in the workplace, women chose to contribute financially to their family instead of staying home, and having babies. Women were also choosing an education rather than being a housewife. When we look at today's society men and women are following the past and choosing educations and careers instead of immediately starting family's or having smaller families. Medical intervention has also played a role in the population growth and decrease. • 15. Food And Hunger : Factors And The Effects Of Population... Food and hunger are issues that have been impacted by population growth, but some countries have been affected more than others. This will be explained through the thoughts of Robbins and other individuals. According to Robbins and Thomas Malthus, both agree that an increase in population will put pressure on the resources. As younger generations become older, they need more food to survive, so they are consuming more, putting pressure on the available resources. In some areas of the world, they were experiencing high levels of infant mortality rates, due to suffering from malnutrition. Unfortunately, due to the symptoms they had, such as "headaches, tremors, weakness, irritability" (Robbins, 2010: 170) they would seek doctors for medicinal treatments and not nutrients. This was seen in places such as it was seen in Brazil, where "approximately 1 million children younger than five years of age die each year" (Robbins, 2010: 168). These numbers are extremely high and are a cry for help, if only individuals knew that they needed food and water and not medicine, the mortality rates would not be so high. Although most individuals can agree that a growing population can cause food shortages, some researchers believed that society did not have to worry about this issue. This was because individuals were inventing new and better things to aid in food production. Technology advances were able to develop improved fertilizers, pesticides, herbicides, allow food to be refrigerated, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 16. Human Population Growth Once, when the world was changing and new lands were being explored and conquered, the opinion of the masses was "Growth is good." There was no worry about the lives being harmed or how large our impact was, or even of the future repercussions our actions might have. However, this once–carefree opinion has twisted and mutated and created a monster: human population growth. It's big. It's fast. And there's almost no way to stop it, with our current rate of increase. The consequences of our forefather's actions, carried out so long ago and not given so much as a backwards glance, are now coming back to haunt us, and they fight dirty. This growing beast is pressing an ever–increasing strain upon our Earth's resources, and it seems like there is nothing we can do to prevent present and future degradation. Luckily, the solution to this expanding issue is sustainability. Scientists and researchers across the globe are working to design effective new ways to keep our way of life without fanning the flames of global change. The bottom line is, the quicker we get started on reducing and reversing global climate alteration, the better off everyone will be. Human population growth has and is drastically affecting the cycles through which our environment works. Ever since the Industrial Revolution in the 1750s, the growth has skyrocketed. • 20. Population Growth Is A Crisis Or Not? Population growth is a great concern of some scientists and this topic has been debating for decades. Increasing of population has been put pressuring on natural resources because of demands of production and consumption are high. According to the BBC horizon documentary (2009), number of current population is about seven billion, seven times more than the last 10,000 years. One main factor of rapid population growth is eliminating from infected diseases. In the last 10,000 years people had a huge problem with infected diseases such as measles, malaria, cholera and smallpox and this could prevent population. When number of population increase, demand of food production and consumption go up and this requires a lot of natural resources to be exploited. Therefore, population growth could be a crisis or not? From Neo–Malthusianism or deep green perspective, capable of the earth to produce resource is limited compare to rates of human's consuming pattern. In his essay, Malthus states that power of the earth 's production is simply less than power of the population (cited in BBC horizon documentary 2009). This view is supported by another research, World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF 2008) indicates global ecological footprint in 1988 was over the earth 's productive capacity and by 2005 it will be more than 30 per cent of the earth's capacity (cited in Harding, R, Hendriks, &, Faruqi, M 2009). • 22. The Rate Of Population Growth Despite a continuing slowdown in the rate of population growth, it is "almost inevitable" that the number of people on the planet will rise from 7.3 billion today to 9.7 billion in 2050, according to the latest UN projections. Ten years ago, the world population was growing by 1.24% annually; today, the percentage has dropped to 1.18%– or roughly another 83 million people a year. The overall growth rate, which peaked in the late 1960s, has been falling steadily since the 1970s. The UN report attributes the slowdown to the near–global decline in fertility rates – measured as the average number of children born to a woman over her lifetime – even in Africa, where the rates remain the highest. However, that fall is being offset by countries in which populations are already large, or where high numbers of children are born. According to the study, nine countries will account for half the world's population growth between now and 2050: India, Nigeria, Pakistan, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Ethiopia, Tanzania, the US, Indonesia and Uganda. "Continued population growth until 2050 is almost inevitable, even if the decline of fertility accelerates," says the report, World Population Prospects: the 2015 revision. "There is an 80% probability that the population of the world will be between 8.4 and 8.6 billion in 2030, between 9.4 and 10 billion in 2050 and between 10 and 12.5 billion in 2100." It is generally believed, from an ecological perspective, that populations will display either an exponential of logistic growth rate. If optimal environments are consistently maintained with no biotic or abiotic limiting factors (excess food, excess space availability, optimum climactic environment, no predation, etc) then a population will grow in an exponential direction. Species with high maximal relative growth rates do not occupy infertile habitats because their physiologies are more sensitive to suboptimal habitats and so their relative growth rates decrease more rapidly as fertility ... China imposed a limit of one child per family in 1979, with two children allowed in special cases (Price, 1999). Large societies obviously consume more supplies than small ones, but depletion patterns and technology selections may report for more environmental harms than pure digits of people. The U.S. population is about one–fourth as large as that of China or India, but the United States currently uses far more energy because Americans are wealthier and use their prosperity to buy energy–intensive goods like automobiles and electronics (Arrow & et al, 1995). However, China and India are developing and becoming more prosperous, so their ecological effects will increase because of both population expansion and consumption levels in the next several years. As income increases and technologies diffuse through society, purchasers start to value environmental quality more greatly and become more able to pay for it. • 25. Population Growth And Economic Development The global demographic trend has become a subject of discussion by researchers, policymakers, and the mass media. Economic performance in any country is, to a substantial degree, affected by the country's demographic situation. In recent decades, the developed countries have been experiencing declining fertility rates that caused serious shortages of the workforce. Besides, the plunging fertility rates have led to the phenomenon called "ageing population" which has become a socio–economic reality in many developed countries and which has put a big strain on their pension systems. Furthermore, in 2014, there was a campaign tagged "Do it for Denmark" where Danes were encouraged to go for more babies to check the decreasing birth rates. On the other hand, the poor economic performance of especially developing economies is related to their demographic growth; therefore, funds are allocated for campaign against their population growth. The importance of the relationship between population growth and economic development has been well recognized by development economists. As Dawson and Tiffin (1998: 149) have pointed out, "most textbooks on economic development include a section on population and development". Despite the fact that there are numerous research studies on the relationship between population and economic development, there is no universal consensus as to whether population expansion is beneficial, detrimental or neutral to economic growth. The population itself has reached overwhelming numbers making it a problem that could turn to be dangerous. The amount of humans that the earth can support or the carrying capacity is slowly rising but at a much slower rate than the population growth rate. The increasing growth rate has its negative effects environmentally, agriculturally, socially, and economically and also has its positive effects nationally, and economically. The government is brainstorming and trying to come up with ways to decrease the growth rate or at least decrease its negative effects and also creating agencies take handle and regulate population growth. POPULATION: It is predicted that in about 1000 B.C. the population was about 265 million people. Theworld population continues to grow greatly. Between 1850 and 1950, the overall population doubled from 1.265 to 2.516 billion people. Between 1000 B.C. and 1850 the population grew on average a little less than 1.5 million people per year.(Our World In Data). As of 2015 the human population is over 7.3 billion people. Today the current world population stands at 7.3 billion and is expected to reach 8.5 billion by 2030 (source UN) this is due to the decline in death rates and increase in birth rates. The population has seen fluctuations, and changes over the centuries with astonishing peaks during the 20th century. In order to understand these changes, we will need study the growth, the explosions and drops in the world's population. In this unit, we will therefore be analysing the causes of population change as well as the potential consequences. One of the first ever triggers of a rapid population growth was 10 000 BC, the beginning of the agricultural revolution also known as the Neolithic revolution. During the Palaeolithic age, the human lifestyle was very different to that of what we know now. It was a Nomad lifestyle, they lived a wilder life of hunting gathering and travelling. It was a harsh and dangerous lifestyle, food was often scarce. The Neolithic revolution first took place in the "Fertile Crescent" or Mesopotiona Known today as Iraq. farming and pastoralism was one of the first realisation that there was no longer a need to move and hunt as you were able to cultivate food in the same spot which triggered the beginning of more complex society's. Population statistics show that there were 1.6 billion people in 1900 and this figure reached 6 billion before the end of the 20th century. Over the past several decades, the world 's population has been growing exponentially. According to the population statistics, this figure is going to ascend to more than 9 billion people by the end of 2050. Recent studies shows that the growth rate of population has somewhat steadied from the prior projections due to various things such as increased education, along with higher death rates due to the spread of numerous diseases. Despite these recent projections, the overall trend of rapid population growth remains, creating numerous challenges for engineers. The main concern for engineers is that this rapid increase in population, along with fast paced industrial growth, places a tremendous strain on land, energy, and water resources that are essential for human survival. These challenges for engineers will required them to use their talents in effort to improve these situations. One of the biggest concerns for engineers with the growing population is the tremendous strain on land. In many areas of the world, the land suited for food production is dwindling. This creates a major problem since there will be a high demand of food production with the growing population. Suitable land and mass food production are both necessary for human survival. ... I initially wanted to research overpopulation because I was deeply concerned with its implications. I wanted to understand the causes of population growth and to learn what might be done to ameliorate the problem. Soon into the research, however, I happened upon pieces of literature opposing the idea of an overpopulation crisis and immediately respected certain aspects of their arguments. Quickly, I was forced to change the scope of my question from "what will be the consequences of overpopulation?" to "what exactly does overpopulation mean?" and "does an overpopulation problem even exist?". History of Population Crises The seed of my doubt that an overpopulation crisis was imminent was planted when I began to examine the historical record of population concerns. As a history major, I have at least some respect for patterns in history. While I recognize that new things can emerge, often a current event is a variant on an earlier expressed theme. Regarding population, the first documented concerns over population size date from a Babylonian epic from 1600 BC (Cohen, 1995). • 34. Population Growth And The Population Essay Population Growth Introduction Population growth is the increase in the number of people through birth rate and immigration rate within a specific population with respect to the decrease within the population though emigration rate and death rate. But do all individuals play a major factor in determining population growth? No, contributions to population growth vary based on each individual present within the population (Graham 1985). For example, different ages of individuals hold different weights that others. This can help is compare the specific age ranges within a group and will help us lead to further analysis (Werner and Caswell 1977). With this being said, populations are dependent on different trends and demographic factors that are occurring that that time within the specific population that is being studied. Some of these factors include gender and race. These can the predict trends in life expectancy and survivorship of different populations (Boucekkine, David, and Licandro 2002) . Discrepancies between races and gender roles have been smuggled over the years (Duncan 1961). Although, they still hold weight in some studies within ecology such as life expectancy. African Americans have shown that they have a lower age average than what American. Cuba is currently described as a developing country and when exploring this countries history it became clear why they are considered so. At the moment, the population is decreasing at a rate of –3% according to cia.gov. According to prb.org, the birth rate per thousand is eleven and death rate per thousand is nine which can lead one to infer that the rate of natural increase, is 2 per 1000(or .2%). Something that can be taken away from these stats is that the rate of natural increase is positive while the rate of population growth is negative. The reason for this is an irrational number of young people who leave this country.According prb.org, the net migration rate is–5. This means that for every 1000 people in the country, five people leave. This number is not supposed to be negative; however, it is because of how many people leave this country. Most of the people leaving are the young people who will end up having children. This becomes a problem because if all of the people who are of childbearing age leave and have children elsewhere, there are no young people to help offset the old population. According to the site havannatimes.org," The combination of young people leaving the country and low birth rates makes Cuban society endure a population aging process. The percentage of people under 60 has been growing linearly for decades, as the percentage of people under 20 decreases proportionately." Cuba is currently in stage 4 of the DTM model. . • 36. The Importance Of Human Population Growth Why Human Population Growth needs to be Addressed The human population growth rate for 2017 according to worldmeters is 1.12%. Today, the world is facing negative effects because each day we inch closer to the carrying capacity. The goal for this problem is to inform society about the effects Human Population Growth carries along with it and why the world should come together and prevent it before it causes serious issues. Living in a world of social media at the fingertips, women are constantly sexualized and the act of sex is encouraged. With the help of social media, the ad with a hot girl can be transformed into an ad about condoms and birth control. I believe that human population growth can be controlled by educating society about contraceptives. If this issue is not taken serious, the world will face a lack of resources, shortage of space, and a weakened environment. First, if human population growth is not controlled we will soon run out of resources. The larger the population, the more demand for resources which leads to the issue of the earth not replenishing quick enough to keep up with the demand. In addition, humans require fossil fuels for energy; the requirement for fossil fuels is high often leaving society to question if there will be enough for future generations. For an example, in 1971 the electricity consumption was at the lowest with 1,199.79 verses the latest update in 2014 with 3,128.4. Although there is proof that human population is taking a toll on resources, people believe it is a positive thing because it allows mankind to invent new ways to produce more resources. According to Acton, it opens opportunities for human knowledge to allow us to produce more finished products out of less raw materials leaving natural resources to become more available. Even though humans are finding new ways to save natural resources, to some extent they will always be used and will eventually run out. Second, if human population growth continues to spiral out of control, we will be left with no space on earth. The demand for new housing or new shopping centers, leads to more deforestation. According to data researched by the United Nations, "the world population will reach 8 billion to 10 billion by the year 2030" (Livi–Bacci: 1992:31–32 cited in Robbins, 2010:130). This view was known as the "Malthusian trap" (Mshahara, 2017). Everything is related to one another, and if one thing changes, then usually the other things will too. As Robbins expressed that Malthus' view was seen in Europe, the demand for food decreased, the population decreased, mortality decreased, and then right after, a rise in population occurred (Robbins, 2010: 157). Another issue that has caused the environment to change is deforestation. The land gets cleared for agriculture purposes, to provide room for growing crops, grazing livestock and urban uses. As explained by Robbins, agriculturists would clear a few acres of land by cutting down the trees and burning them in a process known as "slash and burn" (Robbins, 2010: 157). As individuals can see, population growth has done some negative changes to the earth. Another result that has occurred from population growth is a change in consumption and waste. This subject has arguments on population growth hindering economic development as well as not affecting it at all. As argued by Robbins, (Robbins 2010: 133–134) population growth has caused a high demand for resources, such as water, food, and fuel. With population growing, that is why some communities are dealing with famine, poverty and an increase in mortality rates. According to Massimi Livi–Bacci, (Livi–Bacci, 1992: 145 cited in Robbins, 2010: 134) population growth has not had an effect on the economy. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 38. Rapid Population Growth : A Country With The Largest Human... Transitions in the developing world have generally produced more rapid population growth rates in mid–transition than historically observed in the North. Two factors account for this very rapid expansion of population in these still largely traditional societies: the spread of medical technology such as immunization and antibiotics after World War II, which led to vastly rapid declines in death rates, and a lag in declines in birth rates. Nigeria is a country with the largest human population in Africa. Some of the results of human populations are; depletion of resources, human congestion, weather modification, high unemployment rate, environmental degradation and a lot more. It is stated in science that matter occupies space and space is limited, as a result, this phenomenon in turn will show that the fixed factor like space in the environment will be affected when a continuous factor like population growth is put on it. Over the period of the demographic transition, declines in fertility and mortality cause important changes in a population 's age composition. In general, countries in the early stages of the transition have a younger age structure than countries in the later stages. A changing age distribution has significant social and economic consequences, e.g. for the allocation of education, healthcare and social security resources to the young and old. Assessments of this impact often rely on the so–called age–dependency ratio (DR) that summarizes key changes in the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 39. The Growth Of Population Growth Essay The present rate of population growth is one of the most significant environmental issues we as humans are facing. The exponential growth at which the population is moving is having direct impacts on climate, energy, poverty, food, the global economy, and politics (Why Population Matters). The world population is currently 7.3 billion people and there is growing doubt that the planet is able to sustain human needs and resource consumption (Population Concern). The expansion of human population is impacting countries, societies, and cultures around the world differently. These differences can occur due to, environmental, political, and societal factors that can determine the severity of the issue and how the country decides to respond. The population is growing at exponential rates and can be expressed by calculating the double time, which is the number of years it takes for population size to double (Harper, Chapter 5). For developed countries, the calculated double time is longer than that of a developing country (Harper, Chapter 5). The first case study under analysis is that of Rwanda, one of the poorest nations in the world, which therefore has one of the lowest double time growths (Harper, Chapter 5). Food scarcity and violence are the stories of Rwanda's fate and is outlined in Jared Diamond's book, "Collapse". The second case study being examined is China's human population growth, which is not only negatively impacting its own country, but impacting others at a ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 40. Asian Population Growth Population growth is a problem to the Asian populations health, economy and poverty issues. The one child per family method is an option like what China implemented. Method like birth control programs are also a way to figure out population growth issues. One method that china used in the 1980s was to tell the people that increasing economic growth would help hinder population growth. I dont see how explaining the harms of over population to the public wouldn't be enough for the public to help fix this problem. Spreading awareness about contraceptives and not having such young marriages are also ways to help with this problem. The one child policy has a lot of exceptions and ethnic minorities do not have to follow this law. Steep fines would be given out to families that broke the law. Also if their first child was a girl they were allowed to have another child. There isn't any exact numbers showing how this law has affected the population growth directly. There's not a lot of ways to fix this problem so I feel like this has to be a positive solution to fixing this problem. The fertility rate in China has fallen from 2.8 births per woman in 1979 to 1.5 in 2010. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Than in 2007 67 percent of women between 17 and 45 used contraceptives. So more contraceptive use in Asia would definitely help out with the population problem. Females are actually preferring sterilization with 37 percent of females in India and 28 percent in china. China actually is one of the highest rate for contraceptive use in the world. 84 percent of women who are currently married. Contraceptives has to be one of the best ways to weaken population growth. It is one of the most used methods throughout the world. Condoms and the birth control pill were only 3.7 percent used and 1.3 percent used by women 15–49 years ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 41. Causes Of Population Growth Population Growth Introduction The population of Britain grew rapidly between 19th century and early 20th century. There are many reasons and factors that effected the growth of the demographic. Another factor that caused population growth rapidly was people choose to give birth at younger age. It led to birth rate increase and population increase too. By 1875 Public Health Act introduced: more clean water, more public toilet, more frequently rubbish removal and sewer & drain available. It meant that people's health and sanitation were better. Then life expectancy became longer. From the list of factors, it may has any argument whether which factor led to rapid population growth. Health The most effective factor in population growth was ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Another reason, food and jobs created were helping population growth was in late 19th century railways and steamships made it possible import cheap foods extended to all places. Then more people able to afforded to buy food. This meant less people was starved and population would grow because people were eating more healthy food. Additionally, during 19th century transport were greatly improved. This made travel faster. From this point of view when railway mania introduced many routed was created because more rich people invested. Then many jobs were created and this meant less people were unemployed. All the people from now have: food, job, money..... Then they wouldn't be died at young age. The government banned children to work was a good point because it reduce the chance of death at young age. Also transport made food cheaper by import meat and grain through steamship and railway extended elsewhere in Britain. During railway mania period, created a lot of job for people who were unemployed to get going again. From the factor above it help increased population and more people employed. That meant people able to afford to buy food and less death. Overall food and jobs created did helps a lot with population growth. However, people have anything they need in their daily life such as food, job, money..... Then population would keeps grew without many people died.
