2. Modal Verbs
Modal verbs are auxiliary verbs that have
several functions and one of these is to express
politeness.
Modals are always followed by the simple form
of the verb.
3. Would like….
“I would like” is used to make polite requests, often when ordering
something.
I would like some coffee.
4. Would you mind…
“Would you mind” is also used to make polite requests and to ask for permission.
When there is no “if” the expression is followed by a gerund (ing) and is usually a request.
Would you mind opening the window, it’s really hot here.
When “if” is used in the expression, it is usually followed by the proposal, .
Would you mind if I open the window?
5. “May”
“May” is also used to make requests, it is considered to be very polite.
May can’t be used when “you” is the subject of the question.
May I close the window?
May I ask you to close the window?
