Modal Verbs of Politeness
Modal Verbs
Modal verbs are auxiliary verbs that have
several functions and one of these is to express
politeness.
Modals are always followed by the simple form
of the verb.
Would like….
 “I would like” is used to make polite requests, often when ordering
something.
 I would like some coffee.
Would you mind…
 “Would you mind” is also used to make polite requests and to ask for permission.
 When there is no “if” the expression is followed by a gerund (ing) and is usually a request.
Would you mind opening the window, it’s really hot here.
 When “if” is used in the expression, it is usually followed by the proposal, .
Would you mind if I open the window?
“May”
 “May” is also used to make requests, it is considered to be very polite.
 May can’t be used when “you” is the subject of the question.
May I close the window?
May I ask you to close the window?
But NOT – X “May you close the window” X
