Realism was an art movement that began in France in the 1850s in reaction to romanticism. It aimed to depict everyday life and human emotions in an unembellished and realistic way, showing both pleasant and unpleasant aspects of contemporary society across all social classes. Some key realist artists included Gustave Courbet, who opposed idealization, Honore Daumier, who drew caricatures criticizing French society, and Jean-Francois Millet, who was among the first to portray peasant laborers.
