This document provides an orientation for students on the policies and procedures of the Metter High School Library Media Center. It outlines the mission of providing intellectual and physical access to information resources. Students are expected to follow circulation policies, use materials appropriately, and practice quiet study. The media center offers books, computers, research help and curriculum support for student use.

The mission of the Library Media Center is
to ensure that students and staff are
effective consumers of ideas and
information. The media center will provide
intellectual and physical access to
materials in all formats. The media center
will provide resources and activities that
contribute to lifelong learning.
3. This Orientation will
inform you about:
• What is expected of you
when you visit
• Procedures used in the
Media Center
• How to locate materials
4. The Media Center Provides:
• A quiet, attractive and friendly place for
schoolwork
• Books for assignments and personal
information needs
• Help and resources for assignments
and personal information needs
• Curriculum support and research
opportunities.
• Access to computers for online
research and writing
5. Entering the Media Center:
• The main entrance will be used
for entering and exiting
• Present a pass to the Media
Specialist upon entering
• Make sure to use your inside
voice so as not to disturb other
students/teachers.
6. How You Will Use the Media
Center:
• As an individual for
research related to
school assignments
and/or leisure reading
• In small groups for
special projects
• As a class for specific
instruction that calls
for resources located
in the Media Center
7. Library Media Center Passes:
Each teacher has their own system for passes.
Just make sure when you come in that you have
a pass from them in order to visit. This ensures
that you are where you need to be.
8. When Can You Use the
Media Center:
• During class with a valid pass
• During a class visit
accompanied by your teacher
• Before/After school with prior
consent
9. What You Can Do To Make This
a Better Place for Everyone:
• Enter in an orderly manner and lower your
voice
• Have a valid pass to come to the library during
class time
• Speak quietly and behave in a manner
consistent with study
• Keep food, candy, gum and drinks out of the
library
• Check out all items you take from the library
• Follow school rules
10. Circulation Policy:
• Regular book/equipment checkout
period is 2 weeks
• Magazines do not circulate
• Students are responsible for
returning or renewing books on
time and returning them in good
condition
• Damaged books will be assessed
fines. You may be charged a
replacement cost if you return a
book in a condition which is
unusable
• Overdue books/materials are
charged a fine of .05/day
11. Call # Prefixes and Book
Collections:
• F or Fic (Fiction) - stories written
from a writer’s imagination and
arranged in alphabetical order by the
author’s last name
• PB F or PB Fic (Paperback Fiction) -
same as fiction
• Numbers 000-999 (Non Fiction) –
informational books arranged by the
Dewey Decimal System
• R or Ref (Reference) – books
commonly used for research
• 921 (Biography) – a written history of
a person’s life

• Scratch Paper
13. Technology Acceptable Uses:
The computers are to be used for
educational purposes only. Facebook,
games, music or musical videos are
strictly prohibited in the Media Center.
The following types of access are
considered to be appropriate uses:
• Participation in collaborative efforts
• Accessing real-time data
• Accessing unique resources
• Publishing information and resources
• Conducting research
• Communicating broadly and effectively

14. You are being watched!!!
Your computer use is monitored. Make sure that
what you are looking for/at is of an appropriate
nature. If you are caught viewing something
inappropriate, you will be asked to leave and be
reported to an administrator.
15. Please Practice Library Etiquette
in the Following Manner:
• Do not place books back on the shelf, please place
them in the check-in bin (located at the circulation
desk under the flag that says “Book Return”)
• Do not rearrange the tables or chairs
• Do not sit on the tables/or the backs of chairs
• Only one student per seat
• Log off the computer before you leave
• When you are finished using the library, please
clean up any trash and push in your chair
