presidency, the US sent contradictory messages: one opposing human rights violations and another

Jimmy Carter's always wanted American citizens to think he was truly a "good ole boy" from South
Georgia. He did this by taking a different approach to the White House when he came to
Washington, D.C as the 39th President. Things that were important to President Carter weren't
always important to past president of the United States. He wanted the American people to care
about their family roots. He showed this by appointing fellow Georgians that were knowledgeable
of his family history as his closest advisors including Hamilton Jordan, Jody Powell, Andrew

Through generations of Carter's they made a name for themselves in the agriculture world of
Georgia. When Jimmy was running for president they had a billboard put out by a rural road for all
to see the Carter families cemetery with all Jimmy's ancestors. The civil war had a big impact on
Sumter County because of the site of Andersonville where confederate soldiers were held
imprisoned. Jimmy was very interested in Andersonville and the impression it left on Sumter
County. He would spend hours in the Lake Blackshear Regional Library researching topics of
Andersonville and Littleberry Carter, his great grandfather that had joined a militia called Sumter
Flying Artillery. Jimmy Carter's interest in his family tree has only heightened over the years. He
still to this day loves visiting local libraries and courthouses looking for new information on his
family history. President Carter is now in the works writing a book about the Revolutionary War in
